Snorkel impressive dive sites, swim over coral reefs, and bask on some of the whitest sands in the world. A variety of itineraries are available, from weekend getaways to the Bahamas to 10-night itineraries to see the best of the islands.

The Galapagos Islands

In the Galapagos Islands, you’ll find some of nature’s most incredible creatures. From giant tortoises to iguanas and sea lions, you’ll be able to see a wide variety of animals in their natural habitats on an April cruise with Celebrity. Hike through volcanic landscapes and snorkel alongside sea turtles and Galapagos penguins. Retrace the footsteps of Charles Darwin on Floreana Island, where you’ll find white-cheeked pintail ducks and native flamingos as you explore Cormorant Point.

Transatlantic Cruises

You’ll stop at subtropical Madeira or the Canary Islands before continuing to the heart of Europe. ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE 2024-26 GUIDE

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the  destinations  you sail to and the  shore excursions  available at each port, to a full range of  entertainment  and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your  experience  even more all-inclusive, you can opt for  beverage  and  specialty dining  packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

For the first time, we’re spotlighting new cruise ships on Travel + Leisure ’s It List, as these exceptional vessels become more and more like floating resorts — celebrity chefs, crystal chandeliers, and Rolex boutiques included.

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

Paul Brady/Travel + Leisure

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. From $2,050 per person for a six-day sailing. Accessible ship. — Paul Brady

Oceania Cruises’ Vista

Nick Tortajada/Courtesy of Oceania Cruises

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. From $2,499 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Maya Kachroo-Levine

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Courtesy of Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. From $4,669 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — Elizabeth Rhodes

Silversea’s Silver Nova

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding. From $3,250 per person for a seven-night sailing. Accessible ship. — David Swanson

Frequently asked questions about April cruise holidays

We travel to a range of destinations in April, including:

  • The Canary Islands
  • Northern Europe
  • Western Europe

We have two dress codes in place to make your time on board that extra bit special. Here’s a useful guide so you know what to expect and you cand dress for any and all occasions.

During the day:  The dress code during the day is just your typical holiday wardrobe. Think t-shirts, shorts and sundresses (unless you’re heading to Northern Europe in winter!). Away from the pool, we ask for shoes to be worn and no pool wear in the ship’s lounges, inside bars, restaurants or reception. It may be chilly on deck and breezy in the evening (even in the tropics), so be sure to pack light layers. We’d also recommend flat shoes for strolling the decks.

Evening dress codes: We have two dress codes that apply in the evenings: Evening Casual and Black Tie. Nights where the dress code is Evening Casual, you can bring out your best shirt, dress and smart, dark denim. For nights where the dress code is Black Tie, make sure to pack your best tux, suit or cocktail dress.

There are some venues on each ship where dress codes don’t apply, so make sure to check your Horizon paper that’s delivered to your cabin each day to check where these are, as they vary ship by ship.

Dress codes for children: For those travelling on family-friendly ships, dress codes also don’t apply to children aged 17 and under. However, they can still dress to impress if they want to!

In April, the northern hemisphere is in bloom; across the Netherlands bright tulips blossom in one of the largest natural gardens in the world. It’s even t-shirt weather in some Mediterranean shores! What’s more – in many of your favourite destinations, April tends to benefit from reduced crowds, giving you more room to roam. Plus, as a result of fewer travellers about, prices on shore are likely to be lower than in other months, too.

With an average temperature of 18°C in April, springtime in Spain almost feels like summer. You’ll want to pack for the rain, however, as the occasional shower is to be expected, and the evenings do get cool. We’d recommend bringing along:

  • Long-sleeved tops
  • A light jumper and a jacket
  • Casual shirt and trousers/skirt or dress (for some evenings on-board)
  • A hat for sun protection
  • Sunscreen with SPF
  • Swimming costume/swim shorts
  • Flip-flops or sandals
  • A good book
  • Walking shoes
  • Your dinner jacket, cocktail dress or ballgown (for our Black Tie evening)

With plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures with average highs of nearly 20°C, you’ll want to pack reasonably light clothing. Since Lisbon in April attracts around 11 days of rainfall, however, you’ll want to pack for more than just t-shirt weather. We’d recommend making sure you bring along:

By April, winter’s icy chill is thawing in the Norwegian Fjords but it’s not gone completely. With the highest average temperature of the fjords, Olden can reach highs of 13°C and chillier lows of 2°C, with nine days of rainfall for the month. Dropping to lows of 3°C and with eleven days of rain, Haugesund reaches respectable highs of 10°C; Kristiansand has the same highs, and dips to average lows of 1°C and averages eight days of rain for the month of January. Nordfjord and Stavanger experience identical highs of 10°C and lows of 4°C, though the latter experiences two days more rainfall than the former at twelve days total for the month. The coldest of the bunch – though not by much – is Ålesund , with average lows of 3°C and highs of 8°C, plus 12 days of rain.

In the throes of spring, Western Europe in April is bursting with verdant hues, fresh breezes and a smattering of sunny showers. Bruges reaches average highs of 11°C and lows of 6°C, with nine days of rainfall. St Peter Port gets a tad warmer, with average highs of 12°C and lows of 7°C, and a day fewer of rain at a total of eight for the month.

In April, Portugal ranges from mild temperatures to summer-like warmth. Lisbon features the highest average temperature, with lows of 12°C and highs reaching 20°C, plus a week’s worth of rainfall. With highs a couple of degrees lower than Lisbon, Porto can dip down to 9°C, with nine days of rainfall. Praia da Vitória attracts the most rain with two weeks’ worth of it, though it makes up for it with average highs of 18°C and lows that fall only to 13°C. Ponta Delgada reaches 18°C in April with lows averaging 12°C and nine days of rain, while Madeira climbs to temperate highs of 13°C, has lows of 7°C, and experiences eight days of rain for the month.

The weather in April in Northern Europe tends to be quite brisk, although it can stray into milder territory. In Rotterdam , average highs reach 14°C while lows drop to 4°C, with just over a week’s worth of rainfall for April at eight days in total. In Cherbourg , the average highs are slightly lower at 13°C although lows only drop to 8°C, with the same amount of rain. Hamburg and Bruges both experience nine days of rain during the month and similar lows and highs: Hamburg at 5°C and 9°C respectively, and Bruges at 11°C and 6°C.

Over the Easter period, you can travel with us to a number of destinations. Here’s where we normally travel:

  • Norway – on exclusively-for-adults Aurora
  • The Mediterranean – on Azura
  • Northern Europe – on Iona
  • Spain and Portugal – on Ventura

Pleasantly sunny and warm almost all year round, in April the Canary Islands are no different. Because of this, we’d recommend packing:

  • Cover-up or similar, e.g., canvas trousers and loose-fitting tops (dark or bright colours are better at absorbing UV rays)
  • A light jumper
  • A pair of trousers

Though it’s technically spring in the Norwegian Fjords during April, temperatures are variable and can drop to nearly freezing. Because of this, you’ll want to make sure you pack everything you need to stay toasty while you explore one of the world’s most scenic regions. We’d recommend packing:

  • Waterproof or water-resistant trousers
  • Sunscreen and lip-balm with SPF (if travelling to a snowy region)
  • Salopettes, goggles and sunglasses (if travelling to a snowy region)
  • Winter jacket
  • Winter accessories, e.g., scarves, hats and gloves

Sunny and warm in springtime, a cruise holiday to the Med will give you a taste of the upcoming summer ahead – and in some regions you won’t even be able to tell the difference. We’d therefore recommend packing:

Temperate but changeable with sunny showers aplenty, you’ll want your luggage to cover your bases. We’d recommend packing:

  • A light jumper and jacket

While temperatures are starting to warm over Northern Europe in April, the wind can still pack a bite and the weather can vary dramatically between regions. Because of this, we’d recommend tailoring what you pack for your holiday based on the following list:

In April, the Med is firmly making the transition to summertime, though in some regions it feels like it’s already there. In Spain, highs average 20°C while the lows can dip to a cool 11°C, and April experiences about a week’s worth of rainfall. With the same variation in temperature, Turkey clocks in with only three days of rainfall for the month. With five days of rainfall for April, Gibraltar has warm highs of 20°C and lows of 13°C. Greece gets just as warm with as few days of rainfall, and dips to average lows of 12°C, as does Malta but with only three days of rain predicted for the month. With nearly two weeks of rainfall, Montenegro experiences average highs of 19°C in April and lows of 8°C, while Italy expects a week’s worth of rain, 19°C highs and lows of 11°C.

30 Cruise Secrets Only Insiders Know

Posted: April 1, 2023 | Last updated: July 29, 2023

<p>Cruise ships were already dealing with negative PR about some very public norovirus outbreaks. However, with horrifying news reports of entire ships being placed under quarantine and people being stuck in their small quarters for extended periods of time, the perception that going on a cruise is like climbing into a petri dish is going to be even harder to shake.</p> <p>It’s possible that many consumers will simply never see the cruise industry as being totally safe again. It remains to be seen, but it’s not hard to imagine business remaining down for cruise line operators everywhere even after they can start booking passengers again.</p>

A cruise can be a great option for frugal vacationers. Not only can cruisers sail to exotic locales, sampling the culture and cuisine, but they can also enjoy a wide array of onboard activities, from swimming to rock climbing.

Do You Have a Money Question? Ask An Expert See:  How To Guard Your Wealth From a Potential Banking Crisis with Gold

But, that doesn't mean cruising is inexpensive. Cruisers spend an average of $1,350-$1,950 on a five-day cruise, according to Cruzely.com. Onboard amenities like spa treatments, exclusive restaurants and alcoholic drinks can destroy your vacation budget, too. GOBankingRates spoke to travel experts for tips on saving on your next cruise.

Learn how to avoid wasting money on your next cruise from these insiders .

1. Book Far in Advance

One of the best ways to save money on a cruise is to book nine to 18 months before sailing, said Colleen McDaniel, senior executive editor of cruise reviews and information site Cruise Critic.

"Booking in advance can allow you to not only secure a lower introductory fare, but it also can offer some significant add-on savings, like onboard credit, beverage packages or included gratuity -- all of which could save hundreds of dollars," she said.

See how planning ahead can help you can enjoy a fall cruise on $100 a day.

2. Book at the Last Minute

If you're a spur-of-the-moment vacationer, you can find deals on cruises within three months of departure. "The majority of companies will slash pricing at the last minute in order to fill the boat," said Greg Geronemus, co-CEO of smarTours, a group vacation tour company.

Expect discounts as high as 50 percent. Keep in mind, though, you'll have a limited selection of cabins -- and they're not liable to be the best, since preferred cabins will likely have sold first, McDaniel said.

<p>If you haven’t locked in time off from work, opt to vacation when cruise prices are lower. Pricing for the same cruise can vary by hundreds of dollars from one week to the next, said cruise expert Stewart Chiron of cruise deals site Cruise Guy.</p>

3. Be Flexible With Dates

If you haven't locked in time off from work, opt to vacation when cruise prices are lower. Pricing for the same cruise can vary by hundreds of dollars from one week to the next, said cruise expert Stewart Chiron of cruise deals site Cruise Guy.

4. Use a Travel Agent

You can search cruise options online all day and still miss out on a good deal. That's because travel agencies tend to know about exclusive offers and promotions.

"Travel agents constantly have their fingers on the pulse of the cruise industry ," said Rob Stuart, co-author of "Just Add Water: Your Guide to the Ultimate Cruise Vacation."

Not only do travel agents know the industry inside and out, they can buy tickets in bulk to get better pricing, Geronemus said. Using an agent can save couples up to hundreds of dollars, he said.

<p>January through March is known as wave season, and McDaniel said this time of year is the equivalent of Black Friday for cruise lines. Not only can you find great deals, you might pick up perks like free drink packages, Stuart said.</p>

5. Take Advantage of Wave Season

January through March is known as wave season, and McDaniel said this time of year is the equivalent of Black Friday for cruise lines. Not only can you find great deals, you might pick up perks like free drink packages, Stuart said.

6. Don't Miss Black Friday Deals

When winter comes biting, hunt down Black Friday deals on cruises for your perfect Caribbean getaway. Cruise lines have offered enticing deals on the shopping holiday in past years, McDaniel said. "In some cases, cruises are deeply discounted and, of course, bundled with enticing add-ons," she said.

7. Cruise in the Low Season

You can save 20 to 30 percent on the price of a cruise by traveling during the shoulder season, when demand is low. Most shoulder seasons are in the spring or fall.

Geronemus recommended cruising in Europe and Asia in April and October for lower prices. For Alaskan cruises, vacation in May and September, McDaniel said.

8. Avoid Cruising on Holiday Weekends

Cruise fares tend to be highest during the holidays, when droves of vacationers are hitting the open seas.

"If you can avoid times when everyone is traveling, you're going to save a lot of money," Geronemus said. Not only are cruise fares higher during major holidays and long weekends, but so is airfare.

9. Cruise Between Thanksgiving and Christmas

Schedule a cruise to the Caribbean between two of the biggest holidays of the year, and you can snag a good deal, Stuart said. Don't book a cruise too close to Christmas, though, because fares will be higher.

<p>Sure, you can book a specific cabin on your cruise, but you can save money by booking a category of cabin instead. The guarantee cabin, as it’s called, ensures you get a certain type of cabin — like one with a balcony — plus the possibility of an upgrade. Although you might get a room in a noisy part of the ship, you can save up to $1,000 per person, Chiron said.</p>

10. Gamble on a Cruise Guarantee Cabin

Sure, you can book a specific cabin on your cruise, but you can save money by booking a category of cabin instead. The guarantee cabin, as it's called, ensures you get a certain type of cabin -- like one with a balcony -- plus the possibility of an upgrade. Although you might get a room in a noisy part of the ship, you can save up to $1,000 per person, Chiron said.

<p>If you travel solo, you might be paying more for your single cabin. That’s because cruise lines price cabins assuming double occupancy, Chiron said. So, look for cruises that offer cabins for singles and compare pricing. Make sure you don’t make these costly mistakes while traveling alone.</p>

11. Don't Assume Traveling Solo Costs Less

If you travel solo, you might be paying more for your single cabin. That's because cruise lines price cabins assuming double occupancy, Chiron said. So, look for cruises that offer cabins for singles and compare pricing. Make sure you don't make these costly mistakes while traveling alone.

<p>“For travelers looking for a budget-friendly getaway, weekend cruises are a great way to get away without spending too much money,” McDaniel said. You can take a three- to four-day cruise to the Bahamas for a couple hundred dollars, which is cheaper than the cost of airfare and hotel, she said.</p>

12. Take a Short Cruise

"For travelers looking for a budget-friendly getaway, weekend cruises are a great way to get away without spending too much money," McDaniel said. You can take a three- to four-day cruise to the Bahamas for a couple hundred dollars, which is cheaper than the cost of airfare and hotel, she said.

<p>If you want to save serious cash, avoid traveling on brand-new cruises, which cost more, McDaniel said. “Older ships are often a bit smaller than newer megaships and don’t generally have all of the bells and whistles of ships just hitting the market. But [they] still offer a fantastic vacation option at a lower price point,” she said.</p>

13. Avoid Cruising on New Ships

If you want to save serious cash, avoid traveling on brand-new cruises, which cost more, McDaniel said. "Older ships are often a bit smaller than newer megaships and don't generally have all of the bells and whistles of ships just hitting the market. But [they] still offer a fantastic vacation option at a lower price point," she said.

14. Cruise on Refurbished Ships

If you want the bells and whistles of a new ship but not the high price tag, look for recently renovated ships.

"Cruise lines are frequently investing significant amounts of money to keep their older ships up to date with newer features and amenities, and you can benefit from those upgrades," McDaniel said.

<p>There are no “open container” laws on cruise ships, reported Smarter Travel, which means you can take your drinks from bars and restaurants with you when you are ready to go.</p>

15. Don't Assume the Cheapest Cruise Is the Best Deal

A lot of vacationers choose cruises based on the fare alone, Stuart said. But don't neglect looking at what's included in the fare and what amenities the ship offers.

Although meals are typically included in the base fare, alcoholic beverages, WiFi and shore excursions might not. If you have to pay extra to take advantage of most amenities on the ship, you might be better off booking a more expensive cruise that offers them free of charge.

cruises on april 1 2023

16. Consider a Luxury Cruise Line

Stuart said upscale cruise lines are liable to offer more perks on base fares. Yes, you'll pay more for the luxuries, but don't assume the cruise is more expensive than paying a la carte on other cruise lines.

If you opt for a cheaper cruise but want to dine in specialty restaurants and visit the spa, expect your vacation costs to jump. In fact, adding these extras to your base fare could equal the cost of an all-inclusive luxury line, which can include shore excursions and transfers between the ship and airport.

cruises on april 1 2023

17. Take a Repositioning Cruise

Because ships can't cruise year-round in destinations like Alaska, cruise lines move their fleets every so often. Take advantage by booking a repositioning cruise, where you can enjoy a 10- to 14-day cruise for the price of a seven-day cruise or less, Stuart said.

Repositioning cruises don't have a lot of port stops, so they're only ideal for people who are most interested in the cruise itself, rather than tourist destinations. "If the idea of a cruise is relaxing days on the ocean, a repositioning cruise is the way to go," Stuart said.

<p>Once you’re onboard, be careful not to rack up costs as you sip martinis by the pool. Any extras you pick up will be charged to the card you provide at the beginning of the trip, Stuart said. He said he knows people who have paid more to get off a ship than to get on. So, although there are quite a few cruise activities that are worth the money, you’re better off sticking to the basics. If you’re raring to hit the spa, go to one off the ship.</p>

18. Minimize Spending Onboard

Once you're onboard, be careful not to rack up costs as you sip martinis by the pool. Any extras you pick up will be charged to the card you provide at the beginning of the trip, Stuart said. He said he knows people who have paid more to get off a ship than to get on. So, although there are quite a few cruise activities that are worth the money, you're better off sticking to the basics. If you're raring to hit the spa, go to one off the ship.

19. Book Extras in Advance

If you want to enjoy onboard amenities, book them in advance so you can account for them in your vacation budget.

"Book your alternative restaurants, shore excursions and anything else you know you want to experience prior to boarding," McDaniel said. "That way, you won't be caught off guard by added costs, and you can focus more on enjoying your trip, instead of keeping close tabs on your onboard spending account."

<p>Don’t let special add-ons like drink credits and free WiFi distract you from the high cost of a cruise. “A lot of times, cruise lines use those offers to deflect attention from higher prices,” Chiron said.</p>

20. Don't Be Blinded by Add-Ons

Don't let special add-ons like drink credits and free WiFi distract you from the high cost of a cruise. "A lot of times, cruise lines use those offers to deflect attention from higher prices," Chiron said.

cruises on april 1 2023

21. Cut the Cost of Excursions

Shore excursions organized by the cruise tend to be more expensive. The best way to vacation for less is to explore port cities on foot, or by taking public transportation, said Stuart. Compare pricing with local tour groups, too.

If an excursion is a must, see if there are bargain shore excursions at any of your cruise's port cities.

<p>High-priced river cruise packages are aplenty, Geronemus said. But, you can often find companies offering similar and lower-cost cruises onboard older ships. You’ll have fewer amenities but the difference can be thousands of dollars, he said. You won’t miss the amenities much anyway — after all, the point of a river cruise is to see the sights at the ports.</p>

22. Opt For a Lower-Cost River Cruise

High-priced river cruise packages are aplenty, Geronemus said. But, you can often find companies offering similar and lower-cost cruises onboard older ships. You'll have fewer amenities but the difference can be thousands of dollars, he said. You won't miss the amenities much anyway -- after all, the point of a river cruise is to see the sights at the ports.

<p>If you’re booking a cruise through a travel agency, you might be able to save money on airfare if you get a package deal, said Geronemus. Take the time, though, to price airfare on your own to make sure you’re getting a deal.</p>

24. Be Skeptical of Free Airfare Offers

If a cruise line has a special promotion that includes free airfare with a cruise, you might not actually be getting a good deal if it's not an all-inclusive line that typically offers flights as part of the cruise package.

"That would be a red flag for me," Geronemus said, adding that these kinds of offers could indicate high pricing onboard the ship.

<p>Fair warning: If you think a one-way cruise is a cheap vacation idea, think again. Your airfare could cost more because you can’t book a round-trip flight. So, take that potentially higher cost into account when you’re comparing your options.</p>

<p>If you frequently vacation on the open waters, look for deals on future cruises onboard the ship. Cruise lines might offer perks for onboard bookings, according to Cruise Critic’s Colleen McDaniel. You might get reduced deposits, onboard credit for services or a discount on your fare.</p>

29. Beware the Brochure Rate

Brochures from cruise lines might have tantalizing pricing -- but don't be sucker. Brochure rates typically aren't accurate, and they might not even be offering deals.

"Brochure rates are printed way in advance, and the actual rates are usually lower," Stuart said. "It's easy to change a rate on a website, as opposed to printing all new brochures."

30. Pay Your Bill Little by Little

You'll have to pay a deposit when you book a cruise, and then pay the rest by a certain date -- typically 60 to 75 days prior to sailing, Stuart said. If you book through a travel agent, you typically have the added benefit of making interest-free installment payments, he said.

This can be a good way to soften the blow to your budget. It can also help you avoid interest fees you would incur if you charged the full cost to a credit card.

Iran’s Attacks Bring Long Shadow War With Israel Into the Open

The volley of drones and missiles was the first time that Tehran directly attacked Israel from its own territory, one expert said.

A building reduced to rubble in Damascus, Syria.

By Cassandra Vinograd

  • April 14, 2024

For decades, Israel and Iran have fought a shadow war across the Middle East , trading attacks by land, sea, air and in cyberspace. The barrage of drones and missiles Iran launched at Israel on Saturday — though nearly all were shot down or intercepted — represented a watershed in the conflict.

It was the first time that Iran directly attacked Israel from its own territory, according to Ahron Bregman, a political scientist and expert in Middle East security issues at King’s College in London, who called it a “historic event.”

Iran has largely used foreign proxies such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia to strike Israeli interests, while targeted assassinations of Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists have been a key part of Israel’s strategy. Here is a recent history of the conflict:

August 2019: An Israeli airstrike killed two Iranian-trained militants in Syria, a drone set off a blast near a Hezbollah office in Lebanon and an airstrike in Qaim, Iraq, killed a commander of an Iran-backed Iraqi militia. Israel accused Iran at the time of trying to establish an overland arms-supply line through Iraq and northern Syria to Lebanon, and analysts said the strikes were aimed at stopping Iran and signaling to its proxies that Israel would not tolerate a fleet of smart missiles on its borders.

January 2020: Israel greeted with satisfaction the assassination of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani , the commander of the foreign-facing arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, in an American drone strike in Baghdad.

Iran hit back by attacking two bases in Iraq that housed American troops with a barrage of missiles, wounding about 100 U.S. military personnel .

2021-22: In July 2021, an oil tanker managed by an Israeli-owned shipping company was attacked off the coast of Oman, killing two crew members, according to the company and three Israeli officials. Two of the officials said that the attack appeared to have been carried out by Iranian drones.

Iran did not explicitly claim or deny responsibility, but a state-owned television channel described the episode as a response to an Israeli strike in Syria.

In November 2021, Israel killed Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh , and followed up with the assassination of a Revolutionary Guards commander, Col. Sayad Khodayee , in May 2022.

December 2023: After Israel’s bombardment of Gaza began in response to the Oct. 7 Hamas-led assault, Iranian-backed militias stepped up their own attacks . And late last year, Iran accused Israel of killing a high-level military figure, Brig. Gen. Sayyed Razi Mousavi , in a missile strike in Syria.

A senior adviser to the Revolutionary Guards, General Mousavi was described as having been a close associate of General Suleimani and was said to have helped oversee the shipment of arms to Hezbollah. Israel, adopting its customary stance, declined to comment directly on whether it was behind General Mousavi’s death.

January 2024: An explosion in a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, killed Saleh al-Arouri , a Hamas leader, along with two commanders from that group’s armed wing, the first assassination of a top Hamas official outside the West Bank and Gaza in recent years. Officials from Hamas, Lebanon and the United States ascribed the blast to Israel , which did not publicly confirm involvement.

Hezbollah, which receives major support from Iran, stepped up its assaults on Israel after Mr. al-Arouri’s death. Israel’s military hit back at Hezbollah in Lebanon, killing several of the group’s commanders .

March and April: An Israeli drone strike hit a car in southern Lebanon, killing at least one person. Israel’s military said it had killed the deputy commander of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile unit. Hezbollah acknowledged the death of a man, Ali Abdulhassan Naim, but did not provide further details.

The same day, airstrikes killed soldiers near Aleppo, northern Syria, in what appeared to be one of the heaviest Israeli attacks in the country in years. The strikes killed 36 Syrian soldiers, seven Hezbollah fighters and a Syrian from a pro-Iran militia, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group that tracks Syria’s civil war.

Israel’s military did not claim responsibility. But the country’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, wrote on social media, “We will pursue Hezbollah every place it operates and we will expand the pressure and the pace of the attacks.”

Three days later, strikes on an Iranian Embassy building in Damascus killed three top Iranian commanders and four officers, an attack Iran blamed on Israel.

Southampton is the gateway to the immensely civilized city of London. There are museums to visit, pubs to try, and shops to browse, ranging from Harrods to open-air markets. There are more parks and green belts here than in any other city in the world. There are also caches of stately squares and noble monuments, holdovers from a time when the island ruled a significant portion of the globe.

Day 3: At Sea

Galicia is at the northwest corner of the Iberian Peninsula, to the north of Portugal, with which it has strong historical and linguistic ties. There are hardly any flat areas of land in its uneven landscape, but its hills and mountains offer many pleasant spots and natural parks. The mountain ranges of the Ancazares, Courel, Manzaneda and Pena Trevinca rise to almost two thousand metres. The main urban centres are Vigo and La Coruna.

Cruise resumes manual driving as next step in return to driverless mission

cruises on april 1 2023

Cruise was founded in 2013 with a clear and focused mission: to make transportation safer and more accessible. In the ten years that followed, we’ve worked hard to build advanced self-driving technology and provided hundreds of thousands of driverless trips to riders on complex city streets in San Francisco, Phoenix, Austin, Houston and elsewhere.

In October 2023, we paused operations of our fleet to focus on rebuilding trust with regulators and the communities we serve, and to redesign our approach to safety. We’ve made significant progress, guided by new company leadership, recommendations from third-party experts, and a focus on a close partnership with the communities in which our vehicles operate. We are committed to this improvement as a continuous effort.

Looking to the next chapter, our goal is to resume driverless operations. As we continue working to rebuild trust and determine the city where we will scale driverless, we also remain focused on continuing to improve our performance and overall safety approach. To that end, Cruise is resuming manual driving to create maps and gather road information in select cities, starting in Phoenix. This work is done using human-driven vehicles without autonomous systems engaged, and is a critical step for validating our self-driving systems as we work towards returning to our driverless mission. This will help inform where we ultimately will resume driverless operations.

Cruise has a strong history in Phoenix and it is home to a large number of Cruise employees. It’s a city that supports AV and transportation innovation, and Phoenix leaders strive to ensure the metro area is an incubator for advanced technology. We plan to expand this effort to other select cities as we continue to engage with officials and community leaders.

Adaptive Fleet Learning

Cruise’s AV stack is based on AI technology that learns from information gathered through our driving experience and retrains and evolves our models continuously. The fleet learns from every intersection, construction zone, and road sign it encounters, and applies that knowledge to other environments and scenarios – much the same as a human driver learns, but with far more data and the ability to impart that continuous learning across the entire fleet.

During our operational pause over the last few months, Cruise maintained ongoing and extensive testing in complex, dynamic simulated environments and on closed courses, enabling continuous retraining and improvement. Now, we are building on that work to create high-quality semantic maps and gather road information to ensure future operations meet elevated safety and performance targets. And because no two cities are the same, we plan to conduct this manual and supervised driving in multiple cities - starting with Phoenix - to expose our AVs to a diverse set of driving environments and conditions as we prepare for future driverless service.

Steps Prior to Driverless Operations

The first step is identifying high fidelity location data for road features and map information like speed limits, stop signs, traffic lights, lane paint, right turn only lanes and more. Having current and accurate information will help an autonomous vehicle understand where it is and the location of certain road features. We also measure our perception and prediction systems against our elevated performance criteria, using trained safety drivers as a benchmark. At this stage, no autonomous systems are engaged and the vehicles will not carry public passengers.

Next, we’ll validate our AV’s end-to-end performance against our rigorous safety and AV performance requirements through supervised autonomous driving on public roads, in addition to the ongoing simulation and closed course driving we do. During this phase, the Cruise vehicles will drive themselves and a safety driver is present behind the wheel to monitor and take over if needed.

Safety is the defining principle for everything we do and will guide our progress through this process. As we begin this work, we have requirements in place that not only cover the safety criteria, functions and roadworthiness of the vehicle, but also include robust incident response protocols and extensive training and ongoing performance monitoring for the operators behind the wheel.

Commitments to Safety and Our Communities

Over the past several weeks we have communicated directly with officials, first responders, and community leaders in cities we’ve previously operated in to share updates on our path forward. We are committed to safely deploying our technology in close collaboration with officials and communities at every step.

Our goal is to earn trust and build partnerships with the communities such that, ultimately, we resume fully driverless operations in collaboration with a city.

As part of our commitment to improve our operations Cruise has implemented the following measures:

Established new leadership, and engaged more closely with experienced advisors from GM to support safety, legal, regulatory, and communications functions.

Hired an experienced chief safety officer to guide improved safety processes and procedures throughout the organization.

Established a cross-disciplinary regulatory team to guide engagement with regulators in regard to incident reporting.

Reviewed and strengthened key internal safety governance processes to incorporate more robust cross-functional review and leadership accountability.

Work is also underway to establish important systems and processes for ensuring safe operations across the company including:

Reforming and updating incident response and crisis management protocols to ensure more consistent, effective and transparent response.

Renewing internal training and reinforcing safety culture systems.

Reevaluating and reestablishing our safety target for supervised and driverless operations.

Reengaging with first responders to facilitate ongoing trainings for each precinct and fire house in the areas we intend to operate in.

Looking Ahead

We believe AVs will save lives and significantly reduce the number and severity of accidents on America’s and Arizona’s roads every year. AVs will also improve lives - including creating  convenient and safe transportation options for the elderly and those with disabilities. As we begin this journey, we look forward to partnering with local communities to jointly achieve our shared mission of making transportation safer for all.
