Crusader Kings 3: Tours and Tournaments is coming this spring

Take your show on the road.

It was a big day for Paradox Interactive, which revealed a trio of new games including a squad-based tactics game called The Lamplighter's League from Harebrained Interactive, the Sims-like Life By You , and Cities: Skylines 2 , which promises to be "the most realistic city simulation ever created." It also had some good news for fans of its medieval grand strategy game Crusader Kings 3: A major new expansion called Tours and Tournaments , which will give players all kinds of new and interesting ways to spend their time and money.

Tours and Tournaments sounds pleasant enough, at least compared to what usually happens when a restless monarch gets bored and decides to go out on the road: weddings, hunts, gifts and rewards for loyal vassals, and all that sort of regal beneficence that keeps the common folk happy and potential rivals in their place. But the life of a ruler is never that simple, and while all may appear rosy on the surface, there's always the potential for ugliness—and bloodshed—behind the scenes.

"Be the host of new Grand Activities, be it grand weddings or stirring falconry hunts," says the expansion's description. "But beware! Many celebrations are the perfect cover for the perfect scheme against foes… or family."

Perhaps disinheriting your bastard children isn't quite as free as we were led to believe. In any event, here's how you'll be spending your time out and about amongst your people:

  • Handpick your Entourage and customize your Route carefully. The road ahead might be long, but is filled with colorful characters, exotic cultures, and life-changing events.
  • Pay your vassals a visit and interact with them closely. Inspect their holdings, and get to know how your subjects live their lives in the most distant corners of your realm.
  • Manifest your benevolence and bestow gifts and rewards. Or, bring a horde of tax collectors and finally get your due from those conveniently hard-to-reach vassals.

The Tournaments!

  • Join Contests to win extraordinary Prizes and gain valuable experience in new skills.
  • Host a magnificent Tournament with all its splendor and festivities. Prepare yourself well by paying a visit to the blacksmith or gain some liquid courage in the local tavern.
  • Beguile your opponent with setting Intents, then bash their heads in or win the heart of your quarries with your excellent jousting skills.

The other stuff!

Tours and Tournaments will also enable Crusader Kings 3 players to plan weddings (complete with prenuptial pacts, of course), bestow new and unique honors upon worthy knights, and enjoy "new museum-worthy character art, showcasing in detail the evolution of armor and dazzling changes in western medieval clothing, from the early to late Middle Ages."

Crusader Kings 3: Tours and Tournaments is expected to be out sometime this spring, and will arrive alongside a "major free update" that will feature updated interactions for pilgrimages, feasts, and hunts, "more intricate management of regency relations," and big changes to vassal relations and domain management.

Crusader Kings III Has Gone RPG Mad, And I Love It

The game's new tours & tournaments dlc is one for the role-players.

There are two ways you can approach Crusader Kings III . On the one hand it’s a sprawling grand strategy game where you’re in control of a Kingdom’s entire economy, military, society and faith . On the other, it’s a big ol’ RPG.

Related Content

The game’s success, of course, stems largely from the fact it’s both of these things at the same time, but that doesn’t mean the relationship is always harmonious. For some old-time Paradox players, or even just those who prefer the big-picture side of strategy gaming, the way Crusader Kings III leans so heavily into its character systems can be a bit of a distraction. Individual rulers of the time were incredibly important central figures, of course, but making a player juggle taxes at the same time they’re trying to get married can sometimes be an odd fit.

It also creates this weird schism in the game’s focus, where huge swathes of its actions are carried out via numbers and sliders and buttons, while others are represented as literally as possible, through 3D models of characters reacting to events and presenting the player with lavishly-written dialogue and event sequences.

Anyway, I like this , but I’m pointing out the discrepancy for the handful of people who don’t like the more personal stuff to say, man, you are gonna really hate this new DLC.

CKIII’s new Tours & Tournaments DLC is a doubling down—maybe even tripling down—on the game’s most personable diversions. In the base game, one of the most important things you can do is host a feast, where important subjects turn up at your castle, you feed them, you party and a bunch of events play out that can help you improve (or sabotage) relationships between them.

Now imagine that single party dragged out for weeks or even months , and that’s this DLC. Its main drawcard presents the player with three big options: they can host a huge tournament, the kind with jousting and melee tournaments and damsels offering trophies, they can organise a lavish wedding and they can go on a Grand Tour, where you can plan—down to surprisingly minute details—a big trip around your Kingdom, swinging by your subjects and making sure everything is in order.

Like the feast, they’re a chance to make more sweeping changes to your relationships than is normally possible through regular, individual actions. Unlike a feast, though, these are a huge undertaking, and for the first time properly decouple your character from the game map, in the same way we’re used to seeing the series’ armies behave.

These three events can do a lot , but beyond their gameplay ramifications they’re also just a really fun distraction from the mundanity of your daily rule. They lean very heavily into the idea that you’re playing as person who is capable of doing cool medieval shit, which really, is what a lot of us are here for. A tournament is one of the oldest medieval tropes there is—just ask A Knight’s Tale —and quite frankly it’s crazy we haven’t been able to host one like this until now.

Same goes for the tour! It’s literally the establishing premise of A Game of Thrones ; how could Bran have ever become King if he hadn’t been pushed out a window by a visiting Lannister? And sticking with George R R Martin’s work, the grand weddings are just as important, especially since they let you plan both normal weddings—right down to managing the invite list—and, once again with the Lannisters, murderous weddings.

You don’t just go on any old tour, you can choose what kind of tour you go on, whether you want to terrify the locals or impress them with your splendour

Crusader Kings has forever had a problem where, thanks to games taking place over generations, there comes a point every game where the churn of characters means your allies and enemies start to feel like a rotating collection of random faces and personality statistics. CKIII’s Throne Room DLC tried to make things a little more personal , but these big events go way past that. Swinging by your subject’s castle to have a chat, or arguing with your fiancée’s sister over wedding arrangements pushes this series the closest it has ever come to really making you feel like you’re dealing with people .

Each of these three big events cost a lot of money to host, and take a lot of time to complete, so you might not want to be triggering one every year. Or maybe you do; I think they’re involved enough that again, for the first time in series history, they give players with an inward focus—who care more about internal politics than “painting the map” with their invading armies—enough to do that they can content themselves with only playing that way.

Image for article titled Crusader Kings III Has Gone RPG Mad, And I Love It

There’s of course more stuff than just these headline additions. Like most major Paradox updates there are also some significant changes coming to the base game, which all players will be able to enjoy, not just those paying for this DLC. Regencies have become a lot more involved, the barbershop has been made a lot cooler and you’ve now got the option to station your men-at-arms somewhere specific on the map.

I can’t emphasise enough how much of a pleasure this DLC will be for anyone who plays Crusader Kings III and enjoys the role-playing side of things. The first time I played through a Grand Wedding I was in awe; for a window of time this stopped being a game about dynasties and power and turned into a wedding planner and dating sim , which sounds like a stupid joke until you realise that who you invite and what you plan has impacts on those dynasty and power systems .

Crusader Kings 3: 10 Best Duchy Buildings

  • Duchy Buildings provide significant bonuses in different areas, such as tax collection and military power, but can only be constructed in personally-owned territories.
  • Leisure Palaces increase control, prestige, and popular opinion, and reduce feast costs, making them useful for improving relations and reducing stress.
  • Crown Smithies bolster infantry units and travel safety, reducing maintenance costs and providing damage and toughness bonuses. Royal Armories increase levy size and reduce costs for hosting tournaments.

Duchy Buildings are a great way to reap the rewards of controlling an entire Duchy. In order to do this, players must first own every De Jure territory within a given Duchy, after which a new building option will appear in the De Jure Capital. Some cities will already have certain Special Buildings built into them, such as the Walls of Genoa or the Colosseum in Rome, and others will be able to construct Universities once a certain level of Cultural knowledge is achieved.

Crusader Kings 3: 20 Tips For Newcomers To Grand Strategy Games

However, Duchy Buildings enable the player to choose from a large variety of options, with each providing significant bonuses to a different sector of management. Some buildings may provide helpful increases to tax collection, while others can help bolster military power and make hunting success more likely. It is worth noting that players will only be able to choose the buildings they wish to construct in personally owned territories and won't be able to change vassal's constructions without first revoking their rights.

Leisure Palaces

Increased control, prestige, and popular opinion.

Leisure Palaces provide a variety of small bonuses in numerous different areas, which makes them useful but not essential. Palaces will increase Control and Prestige gain, as well as provide bonuses to both Schemes and Scheme Resistance. There is also the added bonus of reducing Feast costs by 50%.

To unlock Leisure Palaces, players must first have the Manorialism innovation for Level 1, Windmills for Level 2, and Cranes for Level 3. Leisure Palaces are best suited to improving relations through their opinion bonuses and the reduced cost of Feasts; they will also provide Stress Loss, which can be useful to the player's character personally.

Crown Smithies

Bonus to stationed infantry and travel safety.

Crown Smithies are primarily used to bolster Men-At-Arms stats, with a particular focus on infantry units. Much like Archery and Jousting Grounds, this building will reduce the overall cost of Men-At-Arms Maintenance while providing Damage and Toughness bonuses to any stationed infantry units.

10 Best Games To Play If You Love Crusader Kings 3

Additionally, Crown Smithies will provide players with the Superior Armaments travel option, which greatly reduces the chance of any attacks occurring while traveling to different events and activities . This duchy building requires players to learn the Burhs innovation for Level 1, Castle Baileys for Level 2, and Royal Armory for Level 3.

Royal Armories

Bolsters army maintenance by reducing overall cost.

Royal Armories help to bolster levy size and are one of the most effective ways of doing so. In addition to reducing Army Gold Maintenance and increasing Damage and Toughness for stationed regiments, this building will also reduce the cost of hosting Grand Tournaments for players with the Tours and Tournaments DLC .

In order to unlock Royal Armories, players will need to have learned the Burhs innovation for Level 1, Castle Baileys for Level 2, and Royal Armory for Level 3. Innovations can be checked and prioritized through the Culture tab at the bottom-left of the screen.

Siege Works

Strengthens siege weapons and defence against enemy raids.

One of the most important aspects of warfare in Crusader Kings 3 is the ability to conduct quick, successful sieges while simultaneously preventing owned territories from being occupied quickly. Failing to do so can lead to a rapidly decreasing War Score, which can lead to losses even against smaller and less powerful factions.

Crusader Kings 3: 5 Tips For Managing Your Council

The Siege Works duchy building will increase the Fort Level where it is built, as well as reduce the cost of both recruiting and maintaining any siege weapons such as Onagers and Trebuchets. Stationed Men-At-Arms will also receive a bonus, and the same innovations are required as Royal Armories and Crown Smithies.

Royal Reserves

Increase popular opinion and hunting success chance.

Royal Reserves are a useful duchy building for a variety of reasons. In addition to increasing Development and Popular Opinion within the Duchy, they will also increase the likelihood of success during Hunts, which can be greatly beneficial in further influencing Opinion as well as improving other traits.

Constructing Royal Reserves will also grant a small bonus to Tax Collection within the holding it is built. To construct Royal Reserves, players will first be required to have Learned the Manoralism innovation for Level 1, Windmills for Level 2, and Cranes for Level 3.

Military Academies

Strengthen knights and men-at-arms regiments significantly.

Military Academies are specialist buildings that prioritize the training and effectiveness of Knights. As one of the most effective combat units, fully upgraded Knights can be more useful than entire Men-At-Arms regiments. In addition to this, Military Academies will also reduce the maintenance cost of all armies.

Crusader Kings 3: Every DLC, Ranked

These buildings can be especially effective during wartime, but they can also be handy for overall maintenance, as well as for improving the capacity of overall Knights allowed. Players will first need to have unlocked the Manorialism innovation for Level 1, Windmills for Level 2, and Cranes for Level 3.

Tax Offices

Large increase in overall gold income.

Tax Offices only offer one advantage, which is an increase in the percentage of Holding Taxes. While this may seem like a relatively limited benefit, strengthening a duchy's economy will have a positive knock-on effect on all other areas and comes at no expense of Public Opinion.

Tax Offices will provide +10%, +15%, and +20% Holding Taxes with each respective level. For Level 1, players will first be required to have unlocked the Manorialism Innovation; Level 2 requires Windmills; Level 3 requires Cranes.

Massive Defensive Bonuses and Various Advantages for Armies

Marches are an extremely useful defensive building, which can be particularly useful if the holding is located near the frontlines of an ongoing conflict . Marches provide a huge variety of bonuses, including increased Fort Level, increases to Defender Advantage, Supply Limit, and Garrison Size, as well as Levy Reinforcement Rate, Hostile Raid Time, and a decrease in Danger when traveling.

Crusader Kings 3: How To Forbid Heirs From Combat

As a result, they can be of huge significance during conflicts and make for excellent rally points when assembling armies for battle. To unlock Marches, players will need to have learned the Burhs innovation for Level 1, Castle Baileys for Level 2, and Royal Armory for Level 3.

About Dinamo Elektrostal

Moscow’s Dinamo Elektrostal are gearing up for their fifth EHL season having frequently picked off impressive wins but have yet to top their particular group in their previous attempts.

They did get the best of arch rivals Dinamo Ak-Bars in both the Russian Cup and the Prometheus International tournament to show they are knocking on the door.

There has been a reasonable level of turnover from 2020 with Anton Noshin, Evgenii Mokrousov, Aleksei Godenkov and Ivan Zuikov joining the newly formed TsOP Moskomsport outfit. Danill Karagodin, Mikhail Nekludov and Ilya Larikov have all retired.

Their replacements are mostly youngsters with Dmitry Zheleznyakov, Aleksei Samylkin, Petr Agapov, Ilia Bartenev, Andrei Gribanov and Oleg Kulakov joining their line-up.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
