The app also includes an overview of your trip data to see the big picture of your mapped-out routes, speedometer measurements (in your preferred speed units), and fuel consumption. You can better handle vehicle operation costs and analyze the statistics recorded in the app. The GPS Speedometer: Odometer HUD comes with handy features like a built-in speedometer, odometer for distance tracking, speed limit alerts, and HUD usage.

If the user interface and layout options become too much, downsize Speedometer Pro into a usable widget.

A trustworthy speedometer app for biking.

Many people may be happy with the speedometers they use for their cars, but what about Android apps tailored to cycling? The Bike Computer — Cycling Tool app has everything you need in a simple speedometer. Waze also has speed support, so you know how fast you drive in any location. It's a fantastic app that aids your driving excursions while receiving live road alerts. It's also a decent companion app for Android Auto and one of the best Android apps for navigation.

The importance of digital speedometers for smartphones

Speedometers are handy. They provide statistics on how fast you're going, your vehicle's average speed, and real-time data on traveled distance (as most speedometer apps include odometers). Sometimes, we learn that we aren't always taking the most optimized route and often exceed the trip meter. There are shortcuts to getting from point A to point B faster, where apps providing navigational routes and data complement speedometer apps. This roundup offers apps that give you a better idea of your speed and covered distance without taking your eyes off the road (or route).

7 Great Distance Measuring Apps for Android and iPhone

Crystal Crowder

The best distance measuring apps for Android and iPhone make it easy to quickly calculate the distance between two points. Some apps work by line of sight for shorter distances, while others calculate much further distances. No matter what you’re trying to measure, from your daily run to a cross country trip, these apps have you covered.

FYI: looking to measure altitude instead? Check out thes e apps that will measure altitude with your phone .

1. Best for Short Distances: Smart Measure

2. best for golfers: smart distance, 3. best for perimeter measurement: gps fields area measure, 4. best for home diy projects: ar ruler 3d, 5. best for walking distances: map my walk, 6. best for completely free option: google maps, 7. best for land surveying: mapulator gps field measure.

Platforms: Android

Price: Free with Pro option

Smart Measure is part of the Smart Tools collection of apps and measures both the distance and height of objects. It’s designed for short distances, such as determining how far away a person is standing or how far apart two walls are, without using a tape measure.

Setting up Smart Measure using the app's tutorial.

Yes, it does have some negative reviews, but in my experience, this is mainly because it’s a little tricky to use at first. Instead of just pointing and getting results, you need to first calibrate the app based on your own height. It’s not perfectly accurate, but is surprisingly close in most cases.

The app does have ads, but they’re not obtrusive. Watch a short ad to remove all ads for six hours. Or upgrade to remove ads and enjoy measuring width and area as well.

Measuring distance and height in Smart Measure.

  • Measure both distance and height
  • Small ads don’t get in the way
  • Step-by-step guide within the app
  • Calibration isn’t straightforward (but there’s an in-app tutorial)
  • Short distance only

Good to know: if you’re looking to learn a person’s height , try these apps.

Smart Distance is another app from the creator of Smart Measure that is optimized for measuring distances further out to a range of a kilometer. While Smart Measure employs trigonometry for distance measurements up to 50 meters, this app relies on perspective estimates to measure objects much further than that.

Showing tutorial for Smart Distance, one of the best distance measuring apps.

You’ll need to know the height of your target. For instance, a golfer would need to know the height of the flag (approximately seven feet). Then, the app uses your camera’s perspective to measure the distance based on the height.

While it’s one of the best distance-measuring apps for golfers, hunters, and anyone else measuring shorter distances, it’s not accurate past a kilometer. Plus, if you don’t have any idea of your target’s height, you won’t get accurate results. In my tests, it seemed to be off by about 6 to 12 inches sometimes.

Measuring distance of cabinets using Smart Distance app.

  • Ideal for short and longer distances (up to 1 km)
  • Step-by-step tutorial in app
  • Hard to use if you don’t know target’s height
  • Small, unobtrusive ads (remove for a one-time fee)

Platforms: Android and iOS

Price: Free plus Pro options

GPS Fields Area Measure ( Android , iOS ) works differently from the first two distance-measuring apps. Start with a map, and use it to measure the distance between two or more points. Measure the distance between two cities, the length of a road, or perimeters, such as a field or other plot of land.

Measuring distance in GPS Fields Area Measure app.

It’s designed with farmers in mind who want to quickly measure the perimeter of their fields. However, it’s really for anyone wanting to measure distances and perimeters all over the world.

Use manual or GPS measuring to measure distance and area or find points of interest. Measure in both metric and imperial units. Click the + , choose your measurement option, and select your points. Or, use GPS measuring to measure while walking or driving. The free version does have large ads, and you have to pay to remove them.

Great Distance Measuring Apps For Android And Phone Gps Measure Area

  • Measure short and long distances
  • Measure perimeter, distance, and area
  • Uses Google Maps views
  • Large full-screen ads

Price: Free with Pro options

AR Ruler 3D , or AR Ruler App in the Google Play Store, turns your phone’s camera into a tape measure. If you’re working on renovating a room, landscaping your yard, or setting up a new floor plan, this app can help. It can handle everything from simple line measurements to volume to distance.

Measuring distance on AR Ruler app.

The app uses LiDAR technology to measure items. Gently moving your phone based on the tutorial in the app is all it takes to start measuring your target. Choose the unit of measure (both metric and imperial), along with your measurement type, such as a line, distance, volume, etc. The app can even auto-detect shapes.

While it’s one of the easiest-to-use distance-measuring apps, you’ll likely want to upgrade if you need to use it much. You only get four free measurements every 24 hours. And there are ads, though they’re not too bad.

Measurements available in AR Ruler app.

  • Great for small distances and home objects
  • Measures both distances and 3D objects
  • Offers a wide variety of measurement types
  • Incredibly limited free version
  • Occasional full screen ad

Good to know: the iPhone 12 and up come with a built-in LiDAR sensor .

Want to know the walking distance from your favorite coffee shop to your house? Just use Map My Walk ( Android and iOS ). The Under Armour app tracks almost everything about your walks, such as the route, pace, and distance via GPS on your phone.

Saving a workout in Map My Walk.

Unlike other distance-measuring apps on this list, this is made for fitness. But, much like any map app, it’s ideal for tracking the distance of a route. It also works well for planning routes. Or, if you want to know the distance of a path, field, road, etc., just walk and let the app measure it for you. For instance, I measured the length of a hallway using the app.

Obviously, the app needs access to your location to work properly. For basic tracking and saving your routes, the app is free. And it works extremely well. But, for customizing workouts and goals, you’ll need to upgrade.

Showing the route in Map My Walk app.

  • Perfect for measuring a walking distance
  • Works for short and long distances
  • Free fitness tracking app
  • Many fitness features are premium only (unlimited distance measurements, though)

Platforms: Android, iOS, Web

Price: Free

While all other apps on this list have a premium option, Google Maps is free. Sure, you may already use it for traveling, but did you realize there’s also a built-in distance-measuring tool? If you want to see the distance for more than just a planned route, open the Measure Distance tool to get started.

Great Distance Measuring Apps For Android And Phone Google Maps

Measure as large or small of an area as you want. Zoom in to measure your own yard or how wide a local lake is. Or, check the distance between cities, states, or countries. Right-click (Web) or long-tap (app) on your first point on the map. Select Measure distance , then select your other point(s). If you don’t see the option, swipe up to view more options. It can be a line or any shape you want.

The map shows the overall distance. It’s that simple. Plus, there’s nothing to buy or any annoying ads. You don’t have to drop pins to measure distance, but you can make it easier to find your target locations.

Great Distance Measuring Apps For Android And Phone Google Maps Distance

  • Free without ads
  • Measure any distance on a map

Mapulator GPS Field Measure (the Android version drops the “Mapulator” part) is a distance-measuring app and area calculator in one. It’s made mainly for land surveying and offers both manual and GPS measuring modes.

Different plotting options in Mapulator app.

The map looks just like almost any other map app, but use the Area, Distance, and Circle measuring tools at the bottom right to select what you want to measure. Choose between tap, scope, draw, coordinates, and GPS live to plot your points. Once you’ve plotted your points, the distance and any other information appear at the top and on the map.

This is one of the top apps to measure distance on Android and iPhone. It’s simple and straightforward to use. I didn’t notice any ads. If you want to save more than two projects, you’ll need to upgrade to a premium plan.

Measuring distance and area in Mapulator, one of the top distance measuring apps.

  • Measures distance and area
  • Customize measurement units
  • Multiple ways to plot points
  • You can only save two projects for free

Distance Measuring Apps Do the Work for You

Whether you want to measure a few feet or a thousand miles, there’s an app to handle it. Of course, you can always ask your favorite voice assistant some distance questions. For Samsung users, find out whether Bixby or Google Assistant is better to ask . And, if you’re tired of being bombarded with ads while using Android, try these apps to reduce or eliminate them.

If your car doesn't have Android Auto functionality built into its stereo system, it's worth checking out Google's app for staying connected in your car. It's now available on any Android phone , so you don't need to buy a brand new car or upgrade your car stereo to take advantage of the convenience — it'll just run right on your phone and can be configured to automatically launch when connected to your car's Bluetooth or a Bluetooth FM transmitter .

Android Auto is the safest way to access your phone while driving, giving you one-touch access to navigation, music controls, and recent calls. As you'd expect, there's great support built in for Google Assistant including the option to have incoming text messages read out loud (admittedly not the best option if you're in a packed car with friends or family).

Android Auto lets you navigate with Google Maps, listen to playlists or podcasts from your favorite apps, send messages via voice, and more while eliminating the other ways your phone can distract you on the road. If you're hitting the road this summer, you should absolutely have this app download on your phone.

While Google Maps remains the most popular navigation app for Android (largely due to its inclusion as a stock app on most Android devices), Waze is a great option to consider for all your GPS navigation needs.

Waze users get the benefit of all the information gleaned from other Waze users on the road, from real-time traffic information including accident reports, police traps and other hazards seen on the road. You're also encouraged to add your own updates and contribute to your local Waze community as well. Using all that data, Waze will automatically reroute you to avoid any upcoming hazards, and also has really smart features for finding the cheapest gas stations along the way as well as ways of keeping family and friends in the loop on your ETA.

Google Trips is a great travel planning app that helps with some of the mundane aspects of traveling like keeping track of your reservations, while also helping to plan out your days in a new city by suggesting cool things to do based on your interests and available time.

If you're planning to make a pitstop on your way to your final destination, plug the city into the app and see what it generates! It's also available offline, so if you planned out your pit stops ahead of time you can keep in the know even if your phone's data konks out.

When you're exploring a new city trying to figure out what's worth checking out, you're best off checking in with the locals. Yelp is one of the most popular apps for reviewing restaurants and businesses with over 100 million reviews posted by users just like you.

When you're in a pinch for a roadside bite and need to know what's good, Yelp will help you find the perfect restaurant to fuel up and get back on the road.

Fuelling up is often one of the biggest expenses you'll incur on a road trip. GasBuddy helps you find the cheapest places to fill up along the way. Not only is this an app that you'll want to use on a road trip, but you might end up becoming an everyday user once you see the savings for yourself.

All the data is user-generated, so if you see a cheaper gas price not listed in the app, you can report the price in the app and contribute to the GasBuddy community.

What's a road trip without some kick-ass driving music? Or maybe a podcast is more your speed? Regardless of what you prefer to listen to on your long distance drives, Spotify is the best streaming service you should be using in 2018.

Spotify has improved its free, ad-supported mobile app with "made for you" playlists that are curated based on the songs and bands you listen to. With a premium subscription, you get full, unfiltered access to streaming access to over 40 million tracks along with a wide range of curated playlists, so the music won't ever stop, even on the longest of drives. Spotify also includes podcasts, and with Spotify Premium you can download songs and podcasts to your device for offline listening during those times on your trip where cell reception might be lacking. It also plays real nice with Android Auto allowing for hands-free control of all your music while you're on the road.

That is, unless your co-pilot has already claimed the role of in-car DJ…

With its latest update allowing for offline viewing on mobile devices, Netflix suddenly became the go-to app for parents hoping to distract the young ones in the back without having to worry about all that data.

There's a large amount of kid-friendly content available to be downloaded for offline viewing, which should help keep the shouts of "are we there yet?" to a minimum. Load up a phone or tablet with your kids' favorites and look forward to the quietest road trip you've ever enjoyed. It's also a great option for keeping adults quiet, too. A subscription is required, of course, but if you don't already have one you for sure know someone who does.

  • Decibel apps are a convenient way to measure volume fairly accurately with your phone.
  • Our favorite decibel apps include: Decibel Pro, Decibel X, NIOSH SLM app (for iPhone), and Sound Meter & Noise Detector (for Android)

👋 Want to check your hearing?

Try this free hearing test . It takes about 5 minutes and returns a chart that reveals the shape of your hearing. There’s also a helpful video that explains your results.

best app for trip meter android

Many of us are exposed to noise daily, sometimes at levels loud enough to cause immediate and permanent hearing damage . Whether you are at a sporting event or  a pub crawl noise levels can get out of hand. What's worse, our brains aren't always a great judge of volume.

And that’s where a decibel (DB) meter app comes in. These free smartphone apps measure sound levels and help monitor and manage noise exposure.

These are the dB apps I recommend to my patients (with screenshots).

best app for trip meter android

A decibel meter is a device used to measure sound intensity (or loudness) in a given environment. This app uses the microphone on your phone to pick up the sound in your environment and measure how loud it is.

It is also referred to as a sound level meter or SPL meter (sound pressure level). It measures the sound pressure level in decibels (dB), a logarithmic scale showing sound intensity.

best app for trip meter android

Many of us listen to music on headphones at levels that can be damaging to your hearing. For example, did you know that the average person listens to their music at 94 dB SPL ? And if you max out your volume, it can climb to 105 dB. So it's essential to think about listening to your headphone volume at a safe level.

Sound levels above 80 dB SPL are damaging to your hearing. Additionally, there is a double in intensity for every increase of 3 dB above that. So, what exactly does that mean? Increasing sound by 3 dB means you'll need to cut your time in half to keep your ears safe (aka, listen to music for 30 minutes instead of one hour).

Think of your daily sound dose the same way as you think about sodium. Some is okay, but too much is not good for your health at all.

Here are some examples:

best app for trip meter android

Your sound exposure level will vary depending on your activities during the day. It can be hard to tell how loud your environment is, especially if you're not used to thinking about loudness levels in this way.

That's why a decibel meter app is useful. Most of us carry a cell phone throughout our day, and it's easy to open up the app and check how loud your environment actually registers.

Using a DB meter app is simple.

  • Start by downloading a smartphone app that is compatible with your phone (links below).
  • Open the app in a loud place to quickly assess whether or not the noise levels you're exposed to are safe for your hearing health.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) recommends not exposing yourself to more than 85 dB of continuous noise over eight hours per day without hearing protection.

Remember that when your sound exposure level exceeds 80 dB, it's time to think about limiting your time in that environment or using hearing protection.

Top Decibel Apps iPhone and Android

best app for trip meter android

You don't have to buy an expensive DB meter if you want to measure the noise around you; there are several apps available for smartphones that offer similar functionality at no cost.

These apps are great for anyone who wants quick access to sound level readings from their phone without investing in hardware equipment.

Here are four great options to try:

1. Decibel Pro

This free app can tell you how loud your environment is and also allow you to take a hearing test. Another nice feature is the photo and video overlay, so you'll be able to see the noise levels even while you're watching videos and looking at pictures on your phone (pretty cool, huh?).

2. Decibel X

Love data? With this app, you'll see a visual display of your noise level on a graph. It also displays the noise level in real-time and your average noise level exposure in numerical and graph form.

3. NIOSH SLM app (iOS only)

The NIOSH app is an easy-to-use noise dosimeter showing your noise exposure in real time. This app will also keep track of your noise dose over time, displaying your noise dose percentage. Not only was this award-winning app designed by acoustic engineers and experts in hearing loss, but it was also tested and validated at the NIOSH acoustics lab.

iPhone Download

4. Sound Meter & Noise Detector (Android only)

Your daily sound intake can also mimic a “speed limit.” This app shows your noise volume level on a meter resembling your car's odometer.

A history function also shows the length of your sound exposure and a noise reference, such as a busy street or factory machinery.

Android Download

Do you have an Apple product, such as an iPhone? Apple products can now detect when the ambient noise or headphone volume exceeds a certain volume threshold and alert users when they need to turn the volume down.

If you'd like to set up these alerts, go to the Health app on your iPhone. Then, go to the Hearing and Headphone Notifications Tab.

The Health app shows a graph of how loud yor listening levels were over the last week. Using these notifications helps check your levels and receive reminders when the volume is too high.

best app for trip meter android

If you don't have access to a DB meter app, here are also some good tips about when the volume is too loud:

  • Are you having trouble hearing someone talking to you at a distance of one arm's length? If so, your environment is too loud. You'll want to either turn the volume down or move away from the noise to a quieter area. It'll be much safer for your ears (and easier for your conversation partner).
  • Do you crank your headphone volume all the way up? Again, the volume is too loud if you need help hearing someone talking at arm's length. You'll want to limit the volume to 60-70% of the maximum in your settings.

Decibel meters are essential for monitoring sound levels in any environment to protect our hearing health from excessive noise exposure. Fortunately, several free apps on smartphones allow quick access to these readings from our phones.

That being said, Apple products now can detect when ambient sounds become too loud and alert us accordingly so that we can take action before any damage occurs—allowing us peace of mind regarding our hearing health.

So, whether you opt for an app or use some tips to reduce your noise exposure, taking proactive steps towards protecting your ears will go a long way towards maintaining your long-term hearing health.

The Best Measurement Apps for Android in 2024

Measure lines, angles, levels, and more

best app for trip meter android

  • University of Maine
  • Switching from iOS

If you're remodeling a room or trying to work out the dimensions of an area in your house before buying furniture, using a measurement app for Android can save a lot of time and avoid headaches.

Build 3D Floor Plans: ARPlan 3D

Accurate measurements.

Very intuitive to use.

App automatically steps through measurement process.

Plans must be exported as files to the phone.

Limited features.

Can't edit plans after you've created them.

Only walls with standard 90 degree angles work.

ARPlan 3D is one of the more innovative measurement apps for Android on this list. It provides you with an augmented reality measurement tool for measuring the dimensions of a room.

First, measure the height of the wall, then measure the perimeter of the floor. The app will convert those measurements into a full 3D model of the room which you can save as a PDF, JPG, or DXF file.

Simple Level Tool: Bubble Level

Simple to use.

Clean design.

Few features.

Requires phone calibration.

Banner ad at bottom of app.

Bubble level is one of the simplest apps of all. It works like a regular bubble level you'd buy at the hardware store, but it's three bubble levels in one. The bottom of the screen shows the x and y coordinates if the level is at all off-center.

Map Measurements: GPS Fields Area Measure

Distance, area, and point-to-point measurements.

Uses Google Maps distance feature.

Highly detailed maps.

Almost identical to Google Maps.

Banner ads at the bottom of app.

If you'd like to measure longer distances, this is the perfect app for the job. It incorporates the Google Maps distance feature into advanced features that let you measure both distances and areas on top of the Google map of an area.

Simply tap the distance, area, or point of interest mode, then tap the map to measure out distances between taps. It essentially makes the Google Maps distance feature easier to use, with additional measurements possible.

Levels and Angles: Ruler - Bubble Level & Angle Meter

Four apps in one.

Save feature for all measurements.

Annoying full page ads.

Very basic interface.

This is a slightly more advanced bubble level app that includes four features in one app, including an on-screen ruler, a 2D rule for measuring two sides along the phone at once, a bubble level, and an angle measurement utility that uses the camera to measure angles of objects in the real world.

Simple Ruler: RulerApp

Simple and responsive design.

Touch and slide endpoints to measure.

Copy measurement to clipboard.

Banner ad at the bottom of app.

No advanced features.

Limited to length of phone.

If you're looking for a very quick way to measure small objects, just launch RulerApp, lay your phone next to the object, and use your finger to mark the endpoints of the object. This app is very simple and easy to use.

Two Scale Ruler: Ruler by NixGame

Three methods of measurement.

Lightweight app.

Only two units available.

Limited to size of phone.

Full page ads.

This simple ruler app lets you choose between inches or centimeters. Choose to measure from one side, two sides, or three sides of the phone. This app lets you quickly measure small objects in seconds.

Best cycling apps 2024 | 21 of the best iPhone and Android apps to download

Our top pick of bike apps for your mobile device

The best cycling apps will help you plan a route, train effectively, fix your bike and much more. There's no shortage of apps aimed at cyclists, with many more being released all the time, so sometimes it can be difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff.

Fear not – these are 20 of the most useful apps for cycling, as recommended by the BikeRadar team.

We've included a variety of cycling apps for iPhone and Android devices, ranging from highly analytical training tools to simpler social apps and useful navigational resources.

For some apps – Google Maps, for instance – you need to have your device on the handlebar to take full advantage. For others, such as Strava, you can just hit start, put your phone in your jersey pocket or in a bike phone mount and go.

What's more, with Bluetooth accessories such as heart-rate monitors , speed sensors and power meters becoming more common, you can get your smartphone’s Bluetooth connection and processor to do the work that used to require a separate computer and, not so long ago, wires.

Some of the apps featured here are free, some are not, and some are free up front with an option to buy or subscribe for more bells and whistles. The best indoor training apps cost just over £12 a month and the best smart trainers will get the most out of your subscription.

Fair warning: any GPS cycling app will tax your phone's battery, so these are generally better suited to shorter rides unless you're able to charge on the go. The best bike computers will last much longer.

And remember, these are our recommendations, so make sure to add your own in the comments.

The best cycling apps in 2024

To make the list more digestible, we've grouped our favourite cycling apps into ride recording, navigation and route planning, fitness, mountain biking and miscellaneous categories.

Use the links below to jump to the section you need:

Best cycling apps for tracking your rides

  • Best cycling apps for routes and navigation

Best cycling apps for fitness

Best cycling apps for indoor training, best apps for mountain biking.

  • Best miscellaneous apps for cyclists

The best cycling apps for tracking will record your ride and show your speed, distance, route and other metrics, such as elevation.

These are probably the most popular cycling apps out there, with Strava leading the field (and offering a host of other features, including segments, leaderboards and route planning).

best app for trip meter android

While you can use Strava like a cycle computer on your phone, most riders use a separate GPS computer to record and upload their rides and then use the app to see what their friends are up to.

All rides uploaded to Strava deliver automatic rankings of your times over popular stretches of road and trail – known as 'segments' in Strava-speak – along with a GPS map of where you rode.

The real-time feature, which tells you how fast you are tracking on a selected segment, such as the local hard climb, works on smartphones but also newer Garmin Edge and Wahoo computers, too.

Strava’s special sauce, which separates it from its competitors, is the slick social component. Much like Facebook, you can follow friends and see where and how hard they’re riding, leave comments and give kudos on their rides, as well as post photos of your own rides.

Strava pivoted heavily towards a subscriber model in 2020, putting formerly free features such as segment leaderboards and route planning behind a paywall .

Cycling-related ' Points of Interest ', such as cafes and bike shops, show up in Strava's base map in its app and browser.

MapMyRide is similar to CycleMeter, but benefits from the parent company’s online history with route-mapping software.

The app is well-equipped for tracking not only rides but nutrition, weight and more, and can also get you to your destination.

The premium version includes training plans, more advanced routing options and live tracking that can be shared with family and friends. The premium version also ditches the advertisements you’re stuck with on the free app.

  • Price: Free (premium version also available — $5.99 monthly / $29.99 yearly)

Best cycling apps for route planning and navigation

Cycling apps for route planning and navigation will help you discover more roads and places to ride.

The best cycling apps aimed at route planning will allow you to plan your own rides as well as discover routes from other riders.

Some apps will do the heavy lifting and plan a route for you if you enter a destination, which is ideal for on-the-go adventures or cycling around town.

best app for trip meter android

Bikemap is an iPhone and Android app that offers route planning, navigation, real-time updates and plenty more.

In our experience, it’s a good alternative to Strava or Komoot for route planning and offers more for free, though both Strava and Komoot also have their own unique features.

The app’s real-time updates allow you to alert other Bikemap users to problems encountered during a ride. It’s not something we’ve found much use for, but might be more appealing to cyclists riding regularly in an urban environment.

Other features include an archive of more than seven million user-generated routes, route collections and in-app ride stats.

Most of Bikemap’s features are free to use, but there’s also a Bikemap Premium service, which opens up additional mapping options, including cycling-friendly map layers and 3D views of your planned routes, as well as offline navigation.

  • Price: Free (Premium version also available – £9 / €9 / $12 / AU$14.99 / monthly £35 / €39 / $49 / AU$59.99/ annually / £89 / €99 / $99 / AU$179.99 one-off payment for lifetime access)

Google Maps

best app for trip meter android

Apple has done some amazing things in the world of tech, but it can't beat Google at mapping.

Just like you use your phone on the fly to find places, read a few reviews and then go to the one you select, you can use Google Maps to do this too – and get there on bike paths and bike-friendly routes.

Like any app, it’s not foolproof, but in its category it's among the best there is. The audio turn-by-turn instructions are nice when riding, too; for riders who choose to ride with headphones, you can have your phone in your pocket and easily get where you need to be.

  • Price: Free
  • Download: Google Maps for iOS or Google Maps for Android

While Google Maps is arguably the gold standard for dealing with navigation in general, it can sometimes come up a bit short for bike directions.

Komoot uses the open-source OpenStreetMap database and allows you to plan road , mountain bike and gravel rides as well as commutes . The big difference over Google Maps is in the routing, where Komoot tries to choose the most efficient route, taking into account how bike-friendly a road or path is, as well as your fitness.

Using a start and end point, Komoot will tell you the difficulty, fitness required, what road surfaces you’ll come across and an elevation profile to boot.

Once you’ve started your route, it will give you speed, distance travelled, distance remaining and allows for easy on-the-fly route changes. You can also check out other route recommendations in your local area.

Komoot also features curated highlights, as suggested by local riders and Komoot ambassadors. These can be a great way to discover unknown gems in your local area.

A premium subscription unlocks additional features, such as a multi-day planner and live tracking.

Want to know more? We've got a complete guide to Komoot .

  • Price: First map region free, subsequent map regions £3.99 / €3.99 / $3.99 (Premium — £59.99 / €59.99 / $59.99 annually)
  • Download: Komoot for iOS or Komoot for Android

Ride with GPS

best app for trip meter android

Ride with GPS can plan routes in great detail, navigate and record your ride.

It's got a user-friendly interface that allows you to start recording with a single tap, and can even be used to navigate offline, which makes it extremely useful out in the sticks or on long rides, where preserving battery power is important.

The route data provided is particularly helpful, with detailed elevation profiles that you can zoom in and out of, and see exactly where on the route the biggest climbs will be.

Want to share your rides in real time? The app lets you do just that, and it will even read comments aloud as you pedal. Not a bad thing to have when you need that last motivational push.

The free version allows you to create routes and record your rides, as well as set yourself goals. There's a Basic subscription that gives you access to mobile app features such as turn-by-turn navigation, live logging and offline mapping. You can also publish ride reports.

The Premium version gives you all of this, plus advanced route editing, custom cue sheets, stationary bike support and private segments.

  • Price: Free / Basic £6 /€6 / $6 monthly / £50 / €50 / $50 yearly / Premium £10 / €10 / $10 monthly / £80 / €80 / $80 yearly

To some, paper OS Maps are a joy to use and things of beauty. But anyone who's grappled with a South Pembrokeshire OS Explorer as it flaps in an Atlantic onshore wind will appreciate this app's practicality. It's a cartological database of the whole UK on your mobile device.

You can plot and record rides on the app, but the plethora of more cycling-focused alternatives make it a better research tool for us two-wheeled explorers.

The map overlays are handy for cyclists. The Greenspace option highlights grassy areas for off-road routes, while the National Cycle Network one displays quiet lanes and family-friendly routes.

For free, you can access the standard maps, aerial and night maps online. A subscription includes premium features, such as all 25,000 (Explorer) and 50,000 (Landranger) maps on- and offline.

The Landranger is brilliant for planning long rides and multi-day epics. It shows towns and campsites for stop-offs. The more detailed Explorer is useful for poring over the terrain of gravel or mountain bike adventures, for example to differentiate byways and bridleways from footpaths where cycling isn't permitted. You could research in the app then plot the route on Komoot, which is easier to sync to your GPS computer.

If you remember how to read them from school, the Explorer's contour lines and slope direction arrows show hills to avoid or include. Cleverly, you can set the app to flip between each view as you zoom in and out.

The best cycling apps for fitness will help you track your performance over time.

They work particularly well with other sensors such as heart rate monitors and power meters to provide a whole load of data that will give you a greater insight into your riding. Some, such as TrainingPeaks, offer training plans dedicated to different abilities and goals.

Wahoo Fitness

best app for trip meter android

Perhaps the biggest draw of the Wahoo Fitness app is that it plays nicely with others.

It pairs easily with Bluetooth sensors, such as heart-rate monitors, speed sensors and progressive power meters, including Stages (with a Wahoo Key plugin you can pair with ANT sensors, too).

In a world where many companies guard your data in their ecosystems, Wahoo Fitness uploads to all the good sites – Strava, MapMyFitness, TrainingPeaks, MyFitnessPal – and, if you like, can push your data in your choice of five file formats via email or Dropbox.

If you’re a data hound, you’ll love the number-heavy presentation of the app, with eight customisable pages of data on speed, power, heart rate and more. Plus, there’s a GPS map – though it burns through the battery pretty quickly.

The app can also be used indoors with Wahoo's indoor smart trainers .

TrainingPeaks

best app for trip meter android

If you’ve ever had a cycling coach, you’ve probably used TrainingPeaks. Heck, even if you haven’t had a coach you may have used TrainingPeaks.

For everyone from coaches and high-performance athletes, to data-hungry office-based crit enthusiasts, TrainingPeaks offers one of the most comprehensive tools for tracking fitness and fatigue.

However, it is not to be confused with a social network, navigation, or route-planning app, so look elsewhere if that's what you're after.

The app allows you to create and schedule workouts, or choose from a wide selection of training plans crafted by coaches such as Joe Friel and Frank Overton.

  • Price: Free (premium versions from $9.92 monthly)
  • Download: TrainingPeaks for iOS or TrainingPeaks for Android

Cyclemeter turns your smartphone into a great cycling computer – if you’re down with putting your phone on your handlebars, that is.

It's similar to Wahoo Fitness in its wealth of customisable options during the ride, but you also get a smorgasbord of post-ride analysis. Plus, you don’t have to log into any site; the data stays on your device.

You can start/stop rides with your iPhone earphone remote button, too (if you choose to ride with headphones), and integrated Google Maps can assist you in unfamiliar areas.

Cyclemeter also plays nicely with Strava, Facebook, Twitter and more, while importing and exporting routes is also easy.

  • Price Free (in-app upgrades available for $9.99 each)
  • Download Cyclemeter for iOS or Cyclemeter for Android

For those who don’t already have enough data and metrics in their life, the Elite HRV app provides an easy way to track your heart rate variability (HRV).

Over time, HRV data can be used as a marker for monitoring your recovery from training and your readiness (or otherwise) to take on more training load.

You’ll need a compatible Bluetooth heart rate monitor , such as a Polar H10 heart rate strap (a full list of compatible devices can be found on Elite HRV’s website), but you’ll be able to track your HRV for free, with unlimited data storage.

You can also tag each reading with relevant information such as your mood, stress levels and recent activity, to help give further context to your results.

As you build up a longitudinal profile, the app will then be able to give you insights into your potential readiness for physical activity after each reading.

There are also paid tiers, which offer more advanced insights and readiness information, but for those interested in dipping their toes into using HRV as a training aid, the free tier offers a great deal in an easy-to-digest format.

  • Price: Free (premium versions from $8 monthly)
  • Download: Elite HRV for iOS or Elite HRV for Android

Indoor training apps are designed to make sitting on the turbo trainer a far more enjoyable experience. They are a great way to avoid bad weather and get riding when the rest of life stops you from cycling outside.

Some indoor training apps are focused solely on training, with personalised workouts and training plans based on power output and intervals , while others enable you to race against other riders or simply admire the virtual scenery. Here are some of our favourites.

best app for trip meter android

Wahoo X is a subscription service that gives access to Wahoo SYSTM and Wahoo RGT , which was renamed after Wahoo purchased RGT Cycling .

Wahoo RGT offers the same experience as RGT Cycling, where users ride simulations of real-world climbs rather than in virtual worlds like on Zwift.

Wahoo SYSTM is an indoor training app that does things a little differently to the likes of Zwift and other smart trainer apps. It doesn't have a virtual world, but you can ride simulations of pro race finales. In the On Location feature, you ride along to videos of real-world roads.

Having swallowed The Sufferfest, Wahoo SYSTM runs in the same vein as the no-frills workout gallery did. It's for dedicated athletes who'd like to follow a structured training plan, while there is the option to pick and choose workouts. Some of them can be performed outdoors.

Wahoo creates a bespoke training schedule for you after identifying your strengths and weaknesses using the brand's own Four Dimensional Power Profile (4DP). This is meant to give a more nuanced picture of your fitness than a Functional Threshold Power test.

  • Price : Free 14-day trial for new users, then $14.99 monthly or $129.99 annually
  • Download: Wahoo SYSTM for iOS or Wahoo SYSTM for Android / Wahoo RGT for iOS or Wahoo RGT for Android

best app for trip meter android

With an internet connection, turbo trainer and device compatible with the app, riders across the world can ride with or race each other inside the world of Zwift .

As well as being an efficient training tool, thanks to the built-in workouts and training plans, Zwift promotes social interaction and is a great way to break up the tedium of indoor riding.

  • Price: £12.99 / $14.99 per month
  • Download: Zwift for iOS or Zwift for Android

best app for trip meter android

Rouvy is an indoor cycling app that offers a growing number of real-life routes and augmented reality courses for you to ride on.

Unlike Zwift, which simulates virtual worlds and roads, Rouvy uses video recordings of real roads and combines them with elevation data to provide an interactive riding experience. On certain courses, the app can also generate animated 3D riders.

Beyond augmented reality, there are also – at the time of writing – approximately 2,036,020km of route films to 'ride' on, which should keep you entertained for several lifetimes.

The app is available for iOS and Android, as well as for PCs, Apple TV and more.

  • Price: $12 / €12 monthly
  • Download: Rouvy for iOS or Rouvy for Android

TrainerRoad

best app for trip meter android

Compared to Zwift and Wahoo X , TrainerRoad takes a stripped-back approach to indoor training. Instead of entertaining you with virtual worlds, races and group rides, TrainerRoad focuses solely on making you faster with a personalised training plan.

TrainerRoad claims the app uses AI to adjust your plan to your performance levels in sessions, increasing the difficulty if you're going better or decreasing it if you're struggling.

This leads to fewer unfinished sessions and more subscribers increasing their Functional Threshold Power, according to TrainerRoad.

The app is available on iOS, Android, Mac and Windows.

  • Price : $19.95 monthly / $189 annually (equivalent to $15.75 a month) following free 30-day trial
  • Download : TrainerRoad for iOS or TrainerRoad for Android

Many cycling apps are focused on road cycling, building on already available technology like Google Maps. But there are also dedicated mountain biking apps that will help you make the most of the trails.

best app for trip meter android

You’re riding a new trail network, you’ve been out for a few hours, it’s hot, you’re tired and ready for a rest, when you come to a fork in the trail. You took a picture of the trail map near the car park, but you’re not totally sure where you are, so you make a call and go left because you think the trailhead is in that direction. Turns out, you've picked the wrong one, and this trail takes you deeper into the forest – you’re now a bit lost and try to backtrack to get home. It’s in this situation that Trailforks comes to rescue.

Relying on crowd-sourced information, the app has more than 161,000 trails around the world and includes conditions reports, live tracking and even points of interest, such as bike shops, in case you need a spare tube.

The maps are downloaded onto your device for offline use, so no worries if you lose reception.

The app also has an emergency info function that will generate your exact GPS coordinates and the name of the nearest trail.

The free version gives full access to one area and partial view anywhere for emergency navigation. The premium version adds unlimited worldwide maps and downloadable routes.

  • Price: Free or premium €1.66 monthly/ €20 annually

More of the best cycling apps

Bike maintenance, first aid, weather forecasts and just pure entertainment. If you can think of something novel or useful, someone has probably made an app for it.

Here's a selection of some of the best cycling apps the team at BikeRadar love to use. They might not fit into the categories we've already featured, but in most cases they are simply too useful not to have.

What3words takes a unique approach to finding, sharing and navigating to a precise location, having assigned every single 3m x 3m square in the world with a unique combination of three words.

The app is pitched as the new global standard for communicating location, whether it's for coordinating meeting points with friends, finding your tent at a festival or directing the emergency services to exactly the right spot in a remote place or undefined location. It's not a totally foolproof system but, for those who don't know how to give a grid reference or coordinates, it's a quick and easy way to communicate your location.

It's compatible with navigation apps such as Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze and others – just add the three-word address. You can also use voice command.

First Aid by British Red Cross

best app for trip meter android

If the worst should happen on a ride, it pays to be prepared. While it’s hard to beat going on a proper first aid course, this is probably the next best thing.

Using a range of videos, quizzes and step-by-step advice, the First Aid by British Red Cross app helps you learn how to deal with common first aid emergencies, as well as being an invaluable reference when things go wrong.

All the information is stored on the phone, so it’ll also work fine when you don’t have a data connection.

Using ride data from Wahoo, Garmin Connect, MapMyRide and more (but no longer Strava), Relive generates a 3D video flyover of your ride, similar to the course previews shown ahead of WorldTour road races.

The moving map not only shows your progress over the route but also pinpoints where you hit your top speed and the elevation profile, as well as any photos you may have taken along the way.

DotWatcher.cc

If you're into long-distance racing , DotWatcher is a must-visit.

Managed and updated by a small team – all of whom are experienced long-distance racers – the site hosts tracking maps, insight and analysis on the majority of major long-distance bicycle races.

There is no dedicated app available, but the site is very well mobile-optimised, so there's no reason to stop tracking on the go.

The web app was also recently updated to include profiles for each rider featured, making following your long-distance heroes that bit easier .

While not a downloadable app, MyWindsock is a properly nerdy, mobile-compatible web app that will delight KOM/QOM-hunting Strava users the world over.

The site pulls weather data from the Cloud and overlays a heat map of where you are most likely to encounter head, cross and tailwinds over a Strava segment or ride.

This allows you to focus your efforts on segments that will have the most advantageous wind, or, if you’re a real TT-freak, alter your setup for a race depending on the conditions. Totally nerdy, totally brilliant.

During Good Housekeeping’s testing, the battery showed impressive all-day life. As a plus, it includes an extra USB port for charging other devices.

Dash cams can be a fantastic tool for recovering damages, beating tickets, or recording incredible situations. The Garmin 57 mini dash cam takes the functionality up a notch with a Swiss Army knife–like list of features. It can record in 1440p and features incident detection, forward-collision and lane-departure warnings, and a cool option that lets you turn hours of driving into a time-lapse video. Best of all, it measures just about 1.0 by 2.0 inches.

Staying hydrated and keeping your appetite at bay while on the road can be tough if gas-station jerky and drive-thru fare aren't your thing. Koolatron 's thermoelectric cooler and warmer plugs into your vehicle's 12-volt outlet and keeps the contents as cool as 40 degrees Fahrenheit and as warm as 140 degrees Fahrenheit. The 18-quart version can hold up to 23 standard soft-drink cans; the much larger 45-quart version is ideal for families.

Even if you don't consider yourself much of a speeder, having an additional layer of protection against hefty fines is a wise move. The Escort MAX 360 will keep you covered, just in case you lose track of your speed over hours of cruising. It's loaded with features, including dual antennas for increased range, 360-degree awareness, an easy-to-use app, and many more we don't have the space to list here.

GoPro has been offering compact action cameras since 2004, and the HERO9 is perfect for road-tripping. It's durable and waterproof up to 33 feet, allowing you to take it with you just about anywhere. It shoots in 5K so you're guaranteed sharp, high-quality memories once your trip is over. GoPro also offers an array of accessories for attaching it to a helmet, your chest, your car—even a toddler.

Keep your wires and other small gear organized with this neat-looking organizer from BUBM . It comes in ten different colors, and the testers at Good Housekeeping loved the compact fold-flat shape and zipper enclosures.

Charging ports can be a point of contention in cars and trucks, particularly when a family is on the road for extended periods. This Anker portable battery will help nip back-seat fisticuffs in the bud. The 20,000 mAh Li-ion battery allows you to charge up to two devices at a time via dual USB-A ports, and it can be recharged through either its micro-USB or USB-C ports.

Rolling Square's keychain charger is the perfect accessory to keep alongside your keys or in your glovebox. It offers multiple outputs and inputs including USB-C, USB-A, micro-USB, and even a lightning port for your iPhone. It complements the Anker portable battery above very nicely.

When you're on the road for hours on end, a warm beverage can be key in getting your body's motor started and keeping it going. This travel mug from Ember won't just keep your beverage warm, it will keep it exactly the temperature you prefer. The temperature can be controlled from an app on your phone, and its two-hour battery life can be extended by placing it on its charging coaster.

Apple AirTag

Apple AirTag

Many are already familiar with the invaluable functionality that Apple 's tiny tracker provides. It can be used to track anything from your valuables to your luggage and even your car, right from your phone. It does require you to use Apple's digital ecosystem, but its overall functionality could just be enough to convert Android users. Its one-year battery lifespan makes it an easy set-and-forget tool.

JACO ElitePro Digital Tire Pressure Gauge

JACO ElitePro Digital Tire Pressure Gauge

Before and after long drives, it's important to keep tabs on your tires, as they are the only thing keeping you and your family on the road. Investing in a quality tire pressure gauge is key, especially if you drive an older car that doesn't come equipped with a tire-pressure monitoring system. JACO 's gauge is calibrated accurately to professional ANSI 2A standards and offers a full lifetime warranty.

Leatherman Wave Plus Multitool

Leatherman Wave Plus Multitool

If you don't already carry a good multitool, it's about time you do. The Wave Plus from Leatherman is a handy everyday tool for popping bottle tops, tightening screws, opening packaging, and a plethora of other odd jobs. Out on the road, it's great for small inconveniences and quick fixes, such as replacing burnt-out bulbs, tightening hose clamps, or whatever other mishaps may arise.

DJI Mini 3 Pro Drone Bundle

DJI Mini 3 Pro Drone Bundle

This DJI camera drone will elevate your ability to log your road-trip memories. When you're no longer limited to the ground, the photo and video opportunities you'll realize are pretty vast. The GH Institute testers loved that it can fold away into a compact carrying case and lauded its sharp picture quality. The included Fly More Kit opens up the potential to capture professional-quality aerial shots of your car ripping through the twisties. It includes spare batteries, chargers, parts, and more.

DJI Osmo Mobile 6 Gimbal Stabilizer

DJI Osmo Mobile 6 Gimbal Stabilizer

The DJI Osmo gimbal is a nice piece of kit to keep handy if you’re even remotely serious about capturing solid images of you and your flock while out on the road. Even if you're solo-tripping, it's an excellent way to capture photos or videos of your car in action. During testing, the gimbal held the phone stable and has a nice feature that allows it to rotate in a single sweeping motion. The magnetic clamp attaches easily to almost any phone.

Reliefband Classic Wristband for Motion Sickness

Reliefband Classic Wristband for Motion Sickness

Lots of us are burdened with the unfortunate affliction known as carsickness. This can get pretty messy on long drives, particularly if you have little ones prone to nausea. The Reliefband is a drug-free remedy to general motion sickness. If it really works—and most users claim it does—it's definitely worth it.

Bose QuietComfort OverEar Headphones

Bose QuietComfort OverEar Headphones

If you plan to spend many hours in a packed car, you will inevitably be met with conflict when everyone disagrees on what to fill your collective ears with. These noise-canceling cans from Bose provide a convenient solution, allowing your passengers to escape to their own audio reality for a bit. Testers found them very comfortable over extended periods and really appreciated being able to switch between Quiet and Aware modes to filter outside noise.

Caveat: No matter how tempting it may be to drown out the world around you, and despite settings that allow you to control ambient noise, we don't recommend over-ear cans like these while driving. Opt for a pair of AirPods or earbuds , if you must—but be advised, state laws vary on their use behind the wheel.

roadtrip rules

How do I determine which items are essential to my trip?

A good rule, particularly with gadgets, is if you can't name around two-thirds of the buttons on your device, you probably won't use it (or at least to its fullest potential). Carry only what you might need and use.

I'm new to road-tripping. Will all these gadgets be daunting?

Some gadgets like a DJI drone can indeed have somewhat steep learning curves. We recommend trying out your gadgets at home to familiarize yourself with their features and controls. Apps are a requirement for some gadgets, so having those pre-loaded onto your phone can save time and hassle.

Can I buy stuff on the road?

Lots of gear can be a hassle to keep track of, so sometimes it is more efficient to forgo some of the less essential pieces and just pick them up as you need them. Rechargeable electronics are a great solution—they keep working and alleviate the need to carry around or purchase extra batteries.

Why Trust Good Housekeeping ?

The Good Housekeeping Institute has been testing products and providing expert reviews and advice on all types of travel gear in their labs, from luggage trackers and noise-canceling headphones to drones and mobile hotspots. The gadgets chosen for this list were evaluated by product testing analyst Selina Tedesco and updated by media and tech reviews analyst Olivia Lipski .

Why Trust Hearst Autos?

Hearst Autos combines the talent, resources, and expertise of three of the largest, most influential automotive publications in the world. We get our hands on each and every product we test. Most are purchased; some are supplied by manufacturers. If we're unable to test a product or category ourselves, we'll sometimes turn to noted experts such as the Good Housekeeping Institute .

Hearst Autos doesn't need to game SEO algorithms for traffic or promote lousy products to earn a buck. We're far more concerned with our legacy, our reputation, and the trust that our readers have in Autoweek , Car and Driver , and Road & Track to deliver honest opinions and expert evaluations. 10 best Wi-Fi apps for Android to analyze your Wi-Fi

Published on March 28, 2021

WiFi Settings LG V60 - best Wi-Fi apps for Android

Wi-Fi is one frustrating technology. Yes, it gives us the ability to connect wirelessly to the Internet. However, it’s also time-consuming and intensive to troubleshoot when problems arise. Luckily, there are tools to help. Various Wi-Fi apps help you figure out the problems so you can fix them. There are many ways to do so and there are plenty of apps to try. Here are the best Wi-Fi apps for Android to fix those problems for good.

The best Wi-Fi apps for Android

Almost any web browser, first row network scanner, network analyzer pro.

  • WiFi Analyzer and Surveyor

WiFi Analyzer by Olgor

Your router’s app.

Price: Free (usually)

Firefox screenshot 2021

Web browsers are powerful tools for checking your Wi-Fi. Usually, you can just go to Google and do a test search to see if things are loading slowly. Additionally, there are a swatch of websites and tools you can access to help you further. For instance, you can use IPv6-test.com to see if your IPv6 is functioning. You can also access your router and modem settings on your phone browser just like you can on your desktop or laptop browser. A lot of those test sites and your router settings can help diagnose and fix a lot of problems.

Price: Free / $1.99-$9.99 / $1.99 per month

Analiti screenshot 2021

Analiti is a set of Wi-Fi tools that help you do a lot of things. It comes with a speed test that tests things like upload and download speeds as well as ping. There are also a bunch of extra tools to help diagnose issues if you find them. Some ofo the tools include a pinger tool to find the quickest DNS servers, a scanner with channel maps to see if you’re on a congested channel, and a basic, but functional network monitor. There is a $1.99 to remove ads and other purchases and subscriptions to unlock more functionality. It’s one of the better overall Wi-Fi apps.

Price: Free / $3.49

First Row Network Scanner screenshot

First Row Network Scanner does basically what the name says. It scans your wireless network to see the activity. You can not only see the devices on the network, but also the actual data usage by each one in real time. It also has ping and traceroute tools, port scanning, an IP calculator, and more. It’s good to make sure all the devices on your network are, in fact, yours and see if any of them are doing something funky.

Price: Free / $4.99 per year

GlassWire screenshot 2020

GlassWire is a neat tool for network usage. It lets you view, in real time, what apps are using your data on your phone. There is also a desktop variant so you can put this on almost any computer in your house and see if there is an app or game that is using up your bandwidth. It’s also good as a security measure because you can see when apps connect to the Internet and if they transmit data. The Android app is here ( Google Play link ) and the button below takes you to the official website for the desktop versions.

Price: $3.99

Network Analyzer Pro screenshot

Network Analyzer Pro is a good Wi-Fi tool. It includes a Wi-Fi signal meter, a LAN scanner, and it shows you network connections made over several different protocols. It shows you things like signal strength, channel congestion, ping, traceroute, and a port scanner as well. Most of these tools are useful for troubleshooting network issues in a variety of ways. It runs for a single $3.99 payment up front, but that’s it in terms of money.

Price: Free / $2.99

PingTools is one of the more popular Wi-Fi apps for monitoring your network. It has a bunch of features, including a speed test, port scanner, Wi-Fi scanner, traceroute tool, a ping tool, and you can monitor your network with it. You should be able to diagnose or at least see any network issues you might have. It’s also nice for just seeing what’s on your network and how much traffic it’s all using. This one has a free version and a pro version with the pro version removing advertisements and including a few extra features. IP Tools is another app that competes with this one, but we like PingTools more.

Price: Free / $2.62

nPerf screenshot 2021

nPerf is another popular networking tool that works great for Wi-Fi problems. It has some basic stuff like a speed test, a browsing test, and a streaming test to see if your network can handle the stress. If not, it has a network monitor to see if anything is eating up your bandwidth. It’s also an all-in-one app since it comes with coverage maps for the big US carriers. Those looking for a large swatch of tools may need to look elsewhere, but there is definitely a spot for nPerf on this list.

WiFi Analzyer and Surveyor

Price: Free

WiFi Analyzer and Surveyor screenshot 2021

WiFi Analyzer and Surveyor is a neat app for measuring Wi-Fi dead spots. You can create a floor plan of your house and measure the signal strength in each room. With this information, you can see where your signal is at its weakest. You can then augment your set-up with an extra access point to fill in the gaps in your home. The graphics are relatively simple and the tools are generally easy to use and understand. We also really liked the idea of seeing where your weakest points were in the home. This one is free with no ads.

WiFi Analyzer by Olgor is one of the most popular Wi-Fi apps for seeing channel congestion. It shows an easy-to-read graph with all of the SSIDs within range of your device. The app also shows what channels they use. This is usually helpful to see if your router is automatically choosing a less congested channel and how it stacks up to the signal strength of other Wi-Fi connections. The app also supports both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands, a history of your signal strength measurements, and more. It’s a good, cheap, easy tool for diagnosing potential issues.

Obviously, your router’s official app is a great place to help fix, check on, monitor, and tweak your Wi-Fi. Most apps let you do things like change the Wi-Fi channel, reboot, check to see what devices are on the network, and most even let you run speed tests. Plus, most let you do things like update the router firmware and perform other maintenance without a computer. This should be in everyone’s app drawer if they have a router with an app.

If we missed any great Wi-Fi apps, tell us about them in the comments! You can also click here to check out our latest Android app and game lists.

The 10 best road trip apps to make your next journey more epic

T hese days, the phrase “there’s an app for that” can easily be replaced with “there’s, like, 50 apps for that.” Now that warm weather is almost upon us, we’re helping you cut through some of the noise with the best, must-have road trip apps to help you eat, sleep, and sightsee your way across America . All we ask is that you let your co-pilot work them while en route. Otherwise, you’re gonna need a “Send an Ambulance” app.

Google Maps: Navigation

This one shouldn’t be a surprise, but we can’t round up the best road trip apps without including the world’s best navigation app. Even if this is your very first road trip, Google Maps is probably already on your phone. You can plan your route ahead of time and easily share it with friends and family.

The app will highlight traffic along your route and offer detour suggestions in real time, whenever possible. A soothing A.I. voice will shout at you like a perpetually disappointed mother to “key pleft” so you don’t miss a single turn. Plus, in a pinch, you can search for the nearest gas station (with current prices), food stop, hotel, or t-shirt hut.

Waze: Traffic info

A well-equipped shotgun navigator should be equipped with both Google Maps and Waze. While Google Maps provides a snapshot of upcoming traffic, it just doesn’t give you the same highway play-by-play that Waze does. It isn’t nearly as playful as Waze, either.

Waze lets users tag locations along their route to notify fellow drivers of anything from potholes to speed traps to stopped vehicles and debris. If there’s an accident or construction up ahead, good Samaritans might even save you a headache by letting you know which lanes are closed. It also displays the current speed limit so you can avoid speeding in areas you’re not familiar with.

GasBuddy: Gas

One of the biggest road trip expenses is fuel. You can’t get where you’re going without it, but prices can be frustratingly inconsistent. GasBuddy finds the cheapest gas stations along your route, helping you save cash every time you fill up. Google Maps does this, too, but we think GasBuddy does it better, plus the app even offers exclusive discounts of up to $0.25 per gallon.

That alone is pretty dang handy, but it gets even better: By reporting gas prices for the stations you stop at, you help others save big time and rack up points that can save you even more. You can also link the app with your checking account and GasBuddy will help you recoup some costs by giving you cashback on your fuel purchases.

Plugshare: Electric car charging

If you’re road-tripping in a Tesla or other electric vehicle, you’ll need a way to find charging stations along the way. Plugshare is a community-driven app with details on every available electric charging station along your route. Search for stations based on the type of vehicle you’re driving, where you’re headed, and what sort of amenities are nearby. Users can upload photos, leave reviews, and share helpful info like how many chargers a location has available.

HotelTonight: Lodging

There’s no shortage of great hotel booking apps. But if you’re taking a road trip with few or no set plans, HotelTonight makes it easy to book same-day hotel reservations. In addition to booking rooms up to 100 days in advance of your stay, the app can also help you find a hotel, well, tonight . You can search a specific city or just find available rooms nearest you. The more you use the app, the more perks you’ll enjoy in the form of discounted rates. App users also score access to exclusive discounts only available to HotelTonight guests.

iExit Interstate Exit Guide: Food

How many times have you missed out on a fine dining experience or exquisitely sloppy roadside BBQ in the name of getting just a few more miles under your belt? You may never know the true scale of your past mistakes, but thankfully you can put your days of missing out (DOMO?) behind you. iExit lets you view the next 100 exits along your route so you can see precisely what’s waiting for you up ahead.

In addition to showing every tasty restaurant at a given exit, the app will also let you enter a custom search for when you just gotta get that In-N-Out Burger Double-Double Animal Style in your belly tout suite . While we’re (clearly) recommending the app as a food-finder, it can help you find other things, too, including rest stops, hotels, gas stations, convenience stores, local attractions, and much more.

Honk: Roadside assistance

A reliable roadside assistance app is a great thing to have on your phone at all times, but it’s an absolute must if you’re planning a trip through unfamiliar areas. What we love most about Honk is the lack of surprises when it comes to cost. If you’re stranded with car trouble in the middle of nowhere, the last thing you want to hear is that the tow you called is going to cost twice as much as you expected.

With Honk, every service price is provided upfront, so the cost you pay is always the same as the cost you were quoted. The app is completely free to download, and it costs nothing to sign up. Honk works with more than 75,000 professionals nationwide to offer towing, jump-starts, flat tire changes , vehicle lockout service, fuel delivery up to two gallons, and even roadside winching.

RV Parks & Campgrounds: Camping

Aside from saving money on hotels, camping adds a dash of adventure  to any road trip. Tracking down the best sites can be tough if you’re in unfamiliar territory, though, so we recommend downloading RV Parks & Campgrounds from ParkAdvisor. The app provides locations for tons of camping options, from commercial parks to government and military campsites to RV-friendly parking lots and rest areas.

It can also help you find fuel stops and provide extended weather forecasts based on your current location or destination. Click on a site that piques your interest and you can call, visit the website, get directions, and see all the amenities it has to offer. This one’s a must-have for outdoorsy road-trippers.

Spotify: Music and podcasts

Bouts of boredom are a given on long drives. To stay alert and entertained, get those mitts on Spotify, if you haven’t already. Aside from a library of over 70 million tracks, Spotify hosts more than two million shows in its podcast catalog, too.

Create a playlist of your best highway jams, dive into a totally addictive, road-trip-worthy podcast , or let Spotify’s unparalleled discovery algorithms build the new over-the-road soundtrack you didn’t know you needed. Sign up for a free account and gain instant access to enough content for a road trip around the world. Upgrade to Premium and you can enjoy all of it ad-free and offline.

Audible: Audiobooks

Audible is an audiobook service that offers a vast library of audiobooks, podcasts, and originals that you can listen to on your mobile phone in your car while on your adventure. Once you have downloaded an audiobook to your device, you can listen to it even when you don’t have an internet connection. You can adjust the playback speed of audiobooks to listen to them faster or slower, and you can even set a sleep timer to turn off the audiobook after a certain amount of time.

Bookmark your place in an audiobook when you stop for food, lodging, gas, or a pit stop, so you can easily pick up where you left off later. Make sure you browse and purchase audiobooks from the Audible store before your road trip, so they’re ready to go when you’re on a long and boring highway.

There you have it: Our favorite road trip apps. Stay safe out there , and happy trails!
