The ski area of Alpendorf is in the Austrian Alps at an altitude of 600m 1,969ft .

Alpendorf is part of the St. Johann-Alpendorf ski area with access to 300km 186 miles of downhill skiing, with 19 marked pistes, served by a total of 19 ski lifts. In addition to the skiing in Alpendorf itself the appropriate ski Lift Pass will allow you to ski or snowboard in the other St. Johann-Alpendorf ski resort of St Johann im Pongau . Alpendorf is directly linked by Ski Lift to the ski areas of Salzburger Sportwelt .

The skiing is at relatively low altitude, so snow cover can be variable.

Alpendorf Ski Resort

This picturesque Austrian village is a 90 minute drive from the city of Salzburg within easy access from Salzburg, Klagenfurt and Ljubljana airports or St Johann Im Pongau train station if you’re travelling by rail.

It is located in the eastern region of the Austrian Alps. The highest point of the ski area is 1808 m and the resorts altitude is 800m. Alpendorf is a fairly small local ski resort that has good links to surrounding larger resorts. It is part of the Ski Amadé region of Austria which is a network of 28 ski areas. This means that you will be able to experience a variety of different ski resorts from one destination. The scenic location, alongside the charm and authenticity of the resort, makes this an amazing place to enjoy a skiing holiday. The resort boasts some of the best ski lifts around (with heated seats and drag runs for snowboarders) which provide connections to other ski resorts in the area. This is a particularly great place to learn to ski as the resort caters to new skiers with excellent beginners ski slopes.

Whether you want a cheap and cheerful ski holiday or a luxurious break in the snow then Alpendorf will have something to suit you.

Alpendorf is in an excellent location, with easy to access to surrounding ski resorts, including Kerschbaumer, Wagrain and Flachau. This means that visitors can easily attend other resorts and experience different types of ski terrain.

Skiing/Boarding Skiing in Alpendorf

The ski resort is fairly small, but has excellent links to surrounding ski resorts. It is part of the Ski Amadé region, located in the Salzburg Sportwelt section which has a number of snow-sure ski resorts. This means that you can have access to 114 pistes and approximately 33km of runs, from Alpendorf, so if you never want to ski the same slope twice then this is the place for you! Alpendorf is particularly popular with beginner and intermediate skiers and whilst there is not so much choice for the expert skier, the slopes that are available are of an excellent quality and are fairly quiet so you can ski in peace. Skiers can also vary their ski experience by trying some cross country skiing as an alternative to the slopes.

The ski lifts are of an excellent quality and can connect you to Europe’s largest ski and snowboard network via The Amade Ski Alliance, which allows you to use ski lifts in 28 of Austria’s ski resorts! The lifts in the local ski area are fast and modern with an ability to move 56,000 people in an hour. This is excellent for skiers as it reduces waiting time, allowing you to spend less of your day queuing and more of your day on the slopes!

Alpendorf is also extremely popular with snowboarders, with terrain parks that contain half-pipes, gap jumps, rails and many more ‘boarding delights.

Alpendorf Apres Ski

The Austrians are known for hosting the best après ski and there’s an excellent selection of after ski activity to suit everybody’s tastes, whether you fancy a drink in a mountain hut or a dance in a bar. You’ll find five traditional mountain huts to enjoy a drink in and numerous restaurants where you can spend a pleasant evening. Après ski is a great way to mingle with fellow skiers and get to know the locals; it’s one of the best parts of skiing!

The Après Ski Bar is a hut that always offers an excellent night out. It’s is located directly next to the ski lifts making it an ideal place to start drinking once you’ve finished on the slopes. Every Thursday evening from 8pm the bar plays dance music and often has guest DJ’s so party goers are guaranteed a great night out. Friday evenings start early, with skiers attending an après ski party that starts at 3pm and goes on into the night. This is a great place to end your week of skiing dancing the night-away with fellow skiers!

Alpendorf has a number of great restaurants if you fancy a quiet winter warmer and some hearty nourishment rather than a full blown night out - there is nothing better than a good meal to warm you up after a day of skiing. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from suiting a variety of taste and Austrian cuisine is well worth a try!The majority of the restaurants are family friendly and will cater for children. If you fancy an intimate, romantic evening then Hotel Oberforsthof provides award winning fine dining and an atmosphere to match. Buchauhütte is an amazing mountain restaurant with wonderful views and delicious food. The restaurant works on a self-service basis and is a great way to spend a quiet evening whilst at the resort.

There are plenty of other activities to keep non-skiers entertained while the rest of your party is on the slopes. There are plenty of sporting facilities in the resort, so whether you are interested in football or tennis there will be something to suit you. If you fancy a relaxing day, there are some great options: the Diesel Cinema screens films in their original language every other Thursday so is a great place to go with the family and watch the latest blockbuster. Many of the hotels offer spa facilities so non-skiers can spend the day being pampered and join their party relaxed and rejuvenated in time for some après ski fun!

The ski area is at a slightly lower altitude than your average Austrian ski resort meaning that snow fall cannot always be guaranteed but to tackle this, high-performance snow-making facilities are used to produce excellent quality snow throughout the ski season. If you’re booking a holiday well in advance, opt for early season or wait for a last-minute deal when the snowfall has been amazing - when the snow is good, it’s really good.

Alpendorf is located in Salzburgerland and is part of the skiing area Snow Space Salzburg, which Wagrain and Flachau is a part of as well. Alpendorf is a very family and child-friendly area, which is an ideal place to teach the little ones to ski, but there are also many opportunities to challenge the more experienced skiers and plenty of piste kilometers to venture out. Alpendorf itself is not the world’s largest city, but you can find the most basic things, such as bars, restaurants, and a small shops. If you need bigger and other shopping options, you can hop on the ski bus to St. Johann Im Pongau, where there are plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes.

It is a good example of an Austrian Family business. All the small details of the Hotel was to increase our joy during the stay. The Saunas were perfect. Everything was really clean. The afternoon snacks are also a small thing but you appreciate it when you coming back from slopes.

Oberstockerhof

Oberstockerhof is located on a hillside, 3 km from Sankt Johann im Pongau and offers apartments with free WiFi, cable TV, and a balcony with panoramic mountain views. Guests can reach the closest ski slope of the Ski Amadé Ski Area within 10 minutes on foot.

You can play table tennis at the property, and the area is popular for skiing and cycling. Gondelbahn Alpendorf is 400 metres from Haus Oberstocker. The nearest airport is Salzburg W. A. Mozart Airport, 55 km from the property.

A very beautiful place to stay. The apartment was very well equipped and spacious. The owners are very friendly and even prepared a bigger apartment than the one we booked. The property is located close to the Liechtensteinklamm.

Located in Sankt Johann im Pongau, within 27 km of Eisriesenwelt Werfen and 39 km of Bad Gastein Railway Station, Haus Voithofer provides accommodation with ski-to-door access as well as free private parking for guests who drive. The property has mountain views and is 40 km from Zell am See-Kaprun Golf Course and 14 km from Bischofshofen Train Station. The homestay features family rooms.

Karin's house is a perfect place to stay in Alpendorf, enjoy the mountains and, of course, visit Liechtensteinsklamm (which is only 30 mins away) :) The location couldn't be better: lovely view from the balcony, the cable car and a large playground for kids only in a couple of minutes. The house owner is super friendly and always ready to help. Thank you so much, Karin! ❤️ It's been an amazing short-term vacation. We'll definitely come back to visit this wonderful place 🙂

Why is Sankt Johann-Alpendorf a good ski resort for school groups?

Alpendorf (meaning Alpine Village) is an incredibly attractive ski resort very popular with UK school groups, located just 50km south of the city of Salzburg in Austria. Many operators use the full name St Johann Alpendorf, with Sankt Johann being a small town, and a ski resort in its own right, just a mile or so to the north of Alpendorf and often serving as base camp for skiers.

Although the ski resort village is not particularly high, at well below 1000m, there is skiing available much higher and the area does receive decent snowfall most winters. Part of the attraction for this relatively small resort is the ability to ski so many other areas due to the region's well linked resorts - the largest in Europe. The area is very picturesque and provision for beginners is also excellent, but more about that below.

Getting to Alpendorf In a couple of hours you can transfer from Salzburg, Munich, Innsbruck and a couple of other airports, so while some ski resorts can be a pain for school groups to get to, getting to Alpendorf is pretty easy.

For beginners Although the altitude certainly doesn't make Alpendorf snow-sure, the resort has enough snow cannons to ensure great conditions during your stay. Ski lifts can become a thorn in the side of school ski trips, with time spend in queues rather than on the pistes. In Alpendorf this is unlikely to be the case as the lift system in this areas is as good as you will find anywhere in the Alps.

Beginners are well provided for at Alpendorf, with significant investment having been made to improve the areas and lifts aimed at those new to skiing. The snow grooming is an artform here, with the pistes always in superb condition - you will not be disappointed.

Alpendorf accommodation Most school groups will find themselves staying in nearby St Johann simply because there is a greater range of accommodation to choose from. Hotels and guesthouses account for the bulk of accommodation, and we have heard nothing but praise from the school groups we have worked with with regarding the facilities at Alpendorf.

20 years' experience

We have been arranging school ski trips for over two decades. All of the schools that came with us during our first year of operation, and many that have come since, continue to choose Snowslippers to arrange their school ski trips today.

Deep powder runs

The company was founded by two former secondary school teachers. With over 40 years' experience in dealing with young people, they also had a wealth of experience in arranging school ski trips and summer mountain expeditions to the Alps. One of the founders was a member of the RAF Mountain Rescue Service. The third director of Snowslippers was previously employed as a trainer for the Croatian Olympic Academy and the Croatian Ski Instructors & Trainers Association.

We also have the majority of the Snowslippers team in the resort, including directors, who are on hand every morning and evening to ensure your school ski trip is running smoothly.

In more recent years we have diversified from just organising school ski trips. Snowslippers now counts various adult groups amongst its valued customers.

We also cater for families and small adult groups of friends due to demand from individuals who had been with Snowslippers on previous group holidays.

Whilst Snowslippers now has a wider range of customers, our core group continues to be school groups. This is reflected in the nature of this website.
