Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Amenities include multiple pools and shops, as well as a cinema, a live performance theater, a jazz lounge, a spa, a fitness center and a salon. Plus, you can attend a lecture or discussion with the onboard historian, who helps educate passengers on the cultural aspects of each destination. An onboard cooking school, The Kitchen Table, also allows guests to learn about each destination's unique cuisine.

Cruisers can enjoy daily updated food options at The Restaurant, diverse cuisine at the World Café, expertly paired tasting menus at The Chef's Table and Italian favorites at Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. There are eight dining venues on board in total, in addition to the ship's cooking school at The Kitchen Table and 24/7 room service.

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers and 1,320 crew members. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Viking Saturn

Debuted in May 2023, the adults-only Viking Saturn has the capacity to hold 930 passengers and 465 crew members. Travelers love the ship's clean Scandinavian design and compact size, which allows it to dock in smaller ports that larger cruise ships cannot reach.

On board, travelers have access to a slew of amenities, including a fitness center, a spa, a library, a state-of-the-art theater, a hair salon, an infinity pool and more. A resident historian is also on board to offer lectures and educational programming about upcoming port destinations. The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Oceania Vista explores an array of popular destinations in the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, the Mediterranean and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Also, since it is an all-veranda ship, all guests have the same great ocean view. – Julie L. Kessler, Contributor

Best European cruises: 6 ships that stand out across the pond

Ashley Kosciolek

Prospective cruisers often ask me what the best Europe cruises are, but that question is difficult to answer because Europe is massive. It encompasses some 45 countries and includes such cruise regions as the Mediterranean, the Baltic and Northern Europe, the British Isles and the Canary Islands.

While cruisers are spoiled for choice in this part of the world, it can be difficult to know where to begin when researching voyages.

To help you out, I've narrowed down my favorites for the best cruises to Europe for different types of travelers, including families, couples and solo travelers.

Note: Pricing was accurate at the time of publication. Fares are subject to change without notice, and they do not include additional fees or port taxes.

Best European cruises for families: Disney Dream

european cruise options

Disney Cruise Line is great for kids; if you're planning a cruise in Europe with kids, Disney Dream is a logical choice for best European cruise for families.

Character meet 'n' greets, awe-inspiring nighttime entertainment and fun dining experiences mean your kiddos will never be bored. The ship's stellar kids clubs go above and beyond with a likeness of Andy's room from "Toy Story" and a replica of the Millennium Falcon from "Star Wars" (with visits from R2-D2 and a squad of stormtroopers).

Disney Dream is not the line's newest ship, meaning it's a bit more manageable in terms of both size and price. It's not the oldest, either, so families will find more things to do on board than on the line's smallest vessels.

Ashore, Disney's family-friendly excursions will take you to laze on the beach, explore museums and learn about history.

Disney Dream sails three- to 12-night cruises to Northern and Western Europe, the British Isles and the Mediterranean. Cruise fares start from $308 per person, per night, for a windowless inside cabin. You can visit ports like Belfast and Liverpool on cruises from Southampton; Florence and Rome (Civitavecchia) on Barcelona sailings; and Reykjavik, Copenhagen and Lisbon on open-jaw itineraries.

Best European cruises for couples: Viking Star

european cruise options

If you're a couple seeking an upscale Mediterranean experience that offers real value and a chance to reconnect with your partner, look no further than Viking .

The line's Viking Star sails various Mediterranean itineraries, and the European ports the ship visits offer plenty of opportunities for you to feel the love. Have a phenomenal lunch at a table for two in France, take a pizza-making class together in Italy, get a little giggly at a wine tasting in Greece, or run the casino tables together in Monaco.

Viking includes at least one free shore excursion per port in its fares. That means you can wander Europe's romantic cobblestone streets hand in hand with your sweetie without paying a penny extra.

While fares aren't the cheapest you'll find, you'll get a lot for your money. In addition to the tours, Viking includes Wi-Fi, specialty dining, and beer and wine with lunch and dinner in its prices.

Plus, all cabins on Viking's ships have balconies, which is great if you want some fresh air but feel like keeping to yourself. Complimentary room service is available 24/7, so you can order dinner to your cabin for a relaxing alfresco dining experience for two.

Want even more ways to pamper yourselves together? Check out the phenomenal thermal suite in the ship's spa , which offers sauna and steam rooms, tile loungers and aromatherapy rooms at no extra charge. Or, splurge on a couples massage, which will leave both of you feeling loose and refreshed.

Even better, Viking ships do not allow children on board. It's a great excuse for you and your significant other to rekindle the romance without other passengers' kids running around.

Viking's Mediterranean sailings range from seven to 21 nights. Back-to-back itineraries are rarely the same as Viking Star circles the Med. The ship visits ports such as Barcelona, Spain; Marseille, France; Florence (Livorno), Rome (Civitavecchia), Sicily and Venice, Italy; Monte Carlo, Monaco; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Athens and Santorini, Greece; and Kusadasi, Turkey.

Fares start from $381 per person, per night, for a balcony stateroom.

Best European cruises for seniors: Seabourn Sojourn

european cruise options

If you're a senior traveler who loves great food and excellent wine, one of the best luxury European cruises you can book is a Canary Islands cruise on Seabourn 's Seabourn Sojourn.

The small ship carries fewer than 500 passengers, and you won't find raucous parties or tons of children. Instead, you'll be met with stellar service, gourmet food, a room with a view (all cabins have at least a window) and relative peace and quiet. The long itineraries are ideal for wealthier passengers with lots of time to travel.

Seabourn Sojourn's voyages to the Canaries span 10 to 28 days and visit the islands of La Palma, Gran Canaria and Madeira, as well as Lisbon, Portugal. Fares start from $434 per person, per night, for an ocean-view cabin. Extras like Wi-Fi, gratuities and alcohol (including the in-room mini-bar) are rolled into the fares.

Best for solo cruisers: Norwegian Epic

european cruise options

When Norwegian Epic debuted in 2010, it introduced Norwegian Cruise Line 's first cabins for solo travelers. Designed with single beds and a bit less square footage, these so-called studio cabins are clustered around an exclusive lounge reserved for solos. Special activities allow folks traveling alone to mingle and make new friends.

Since Norwegian Epic began sailing, nearly all of the line's new ships — Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva — have been built with accommodations for one, which don't charge occupants a single supplement . However, it's Norwegian Epic that has a presence in the Western Mediterranean, offering solo cruisers a chance to explore Europe on a ship with staterooms just for them.

On board, passengers have plenty of choices for activities and dining. In addition to the usual cruise-ship offerings — pool games, dance parties, game shows, trivia and movie screenings — Epic offers many fun diversions, including an adults-only beach club at the back of the ship, spa treatments, a bowling alley and even gaming lessons (the latter three for a fee).

The vessel sails five- to 12-night voyages back and forth between Rome and Barcelona, calling on ports that include Naples, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Marseille, Cannes and Florence (Livorno). At press time, last-minute fares started from $90 per person, per night, for a studio cabin for one.

Best European party cruises: Virgin Voyages' Resilient Lady

european cruise options

If your Europe bucket list includes the Greek Isles, you don't want to sail with children, and you enjoy a lively party atmosphere, you can't go wrong with Virgin Voyages ' Resilient Lady. The third ship in the line's fleet, Resilient Lady offers some of the best cruises to the Greek Islands.

Expect a casual vibe where passengers dress up like mermaids, crew dress up like drag queens, and performers look like real people. Toss in an onboard tattoo parlor, a food court ( it's not a buffet ), free fitness classes and an app that lets you order Champagne to wherever you are on the ship, and you've got a product that has turned the cruise industry on its head.

Wild nights on board include raucous and sometimes raunchy theater shows, impromptu dance parties and Scarlet Night, a poolside bash reminiscent of a rave where everyone's dressed in red. If that's not enough, attend enough daily activities, and you might be invited to a secret nighttime tour of the crew bar, drinks included.

The ship offers a regular program of 7-, 10- and 14-night voyages, starting from $148 per person, per night, for an inside cabin. The itineraries involve a mix of ports in Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Turkey, depending on the specific sailing you choose.

Best European cruises for 'wow' factor: Hurtigruten's Richard With

european cruise options

Looking for a sailing that no other cruise line offers — one that will make everyone on TikTok and Instagram jealous? I'm putting my money on a line you've likely never heard of: Hurtigruten .

What began more than 130 years ago as a way for Norway's residents to move themselves and cargo up and down the Norwegian coast continues today as both a means of transportation and a way for cruisers to experience the country's culture.

On the cruise line's Norwegian Coastal Express route, Hurtigruten's Richard With ship calls on 34 ports in just seven days. Some are quick stops in the middle of the night while cargo is loaded and unloaded, but you technically could get off the ship in each port if you wanted to. That in itself makes this itinerary buzzworthy.

Still need convincing? These voyages also cross into the Arctic Circle and sail into Geirangerfjord (northbound from Bergen to Kirkenes) and Trollfjord (southbound from Kirkenes to Bergen), affording absolutely breathtaking views and, of course, bragging rights.

The two routes can be combined into longer 13-day sailings, meaning you'd sail round-trip from Bergen and see all the fjords. Seven-night northbound itineraries from Bergen to Kirkenes start at $331 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Bottom line

Ultimately, the best cruise to Europe is a bit subjective in that it depends where in Europe you'd like to go and what your travel style is. Be sure to weigh a combination of destination, price and onboard vibe when deciding which is best for you and your travel party.

The Best Europe Cruises for 2021 and Beyond

If you want to see the Northern Lights in Norway, Seabourn’s wintertime Norway cruises are your best bet.

After a pandemic year without any European cruises available to Americans, sailing options are returning for the summer 2021 season. Cruise lines are testing the waters with a limited number of ships and new health and safety protocols in place with most cruises restricted to passengers who have been vaccinated.

There are benefits to being first in line postpandemic. Ships will sail at reduced capacity and popular attractions are unlikely to be crowded. You may find you have a museum or café practically to yourself. As restrictions ease, the traffic is bound to pick up in 2022, which already is looking like a year when ships will sail full due to pent-up demand.

Here are our picks for cruises this summer and beyond.

Norway: Seabourn wintertime cruise

Seeing the Northern Lights is practically guaranteed on Seabourn’s new wintertime Norway itineraries debuting in December. The 12- to 14-day sailings also introduce the line’s first purpose-built, polar-class expedition yacht, the 264-passenger Seabourn Venture , equipped with two custom, six-seat submarines, two dozen Zodiacs, and expedition kayaks for intimate exploration of Norway’s winter landscape. Excursions, which include the opportunity to camp on land overnight for optimal Northern Lights viewing, are led by a 26-person expedition team. Alternatively, you may opt to just stay cozy in your fancy suite and get a wake-up call should the lights appear. Most departures are from Tromsø, Norway, or Copenhagen, with fares for 12-night sailings starting from $10,999 per person.

Greece: A crusie with Seabourn, Silversea, Ponant, Windstar, or Variety Cruises

With its historic sites, whitewashed towns, the popular beaches of Mykonos, and views galore in the cliffside towns of Santorini, Greece opened its doors to international travelers in May. Nearly a dozen cruise lines are returning to the Aegean this summer and fall so there are ample options for those seeking to sail the Greek isles.

Ultraluxury lines such as Seabourn and Silversea are in the mix for summer 2021, along with boutique lines such as France-based Ponant and Windstar , with its 148-passenger, four-masted Wind Star sailing ship.

Or explore for a week on Greek-owned Variety Cruises ’ 157-foot, 49-passenger sailing yacht Galileo , going beyond the norm to lesser-known Cycladic and Dodecanese islands such as Levitha, where a summertime restaurant for sailors is run by the one family who lives on the island.

Adriatic: Viking’s 10-night Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise

Viking’s Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise includes port stops in Croatia.

When Viking Ocean Cruises returns to cruising this summer, it will have three ships sailing from Valletta on Malta to Greece, Italy, and Spain. Our pick is Viking’s 10-night Malta and Adriatic Jewels Cruise, roundtrip from Valletta. The ship gets you to Kotor, Montenegro (you’ll want to be on deck as you sail through a river valley surrounded by peaks); the fairy-tale-like Old Town of Dubrovnik, Croatia; the Croatian city of Split with its 4th-century Roman palace; and Gozo, Malta, where according to legend giants built the prehistoric palace, which predates Stonehenge. There’s also opportunity in Croatia and Malta to see filming locations for HBO’s Game of Thrones . Sail on the 930-passenger Viking Venus , a new ship from Viking. Fares from $3,599 per person.

Basque Country: Lindblad Expeditions Lisbon to Bordeaux cruise

New from Lindblad Expeditions in April 2022 is a unique cultural exploration cruise from Lisbon to Bordeaux . The itinerary begins in Porto, Portugal, and continues through Basque country to the epicenter for French wine, Bordeaux, with a strong focus on food and drink throughout the cruise.

Spain and France: National Geographic Resolution

Sail on the new, polar-class, 126-passenger National Geographic Resolution , where you can work out in the yoga studio or linger in the infinity-style hot tubs when not on shore sipping port at the wine cellars in Porto. During the cruise, you will have the opportunity to spend a day collecting mussels with local fishermen in Galicia, Spain, visit Bilbao’s Frank Gehry–designed Guggenheim art museum, and sample tapas and sparkling wine in a French Basque fishing village. Fares from $6,870 per person.

River Cruise: AmaWaterways’ AmaMagna cruise

Get into the heart of great European cities such as Budapest on a Danube river cruise.

River cruises return this summer , with Viking, Uniworld, Scenic, and AmaWaterways among the lines relaunching ships—although not their whole fleets—on rivers that include Portugal’s Douro, France’s Seine and Rhône, and the multi-country Rhine and Danube. A great way to sail the Danube is on AmaWaterways ’ impressive, double-wide, 196-passenger AmaMagna , traveling between Budapest and Vilshofen, Germany, stopping in Bratislava, Slovakia, and with an overnight in Vienna. Sip the local gruner veltliner and riesling in Wachau Valley or dance like you are in The Sound of Music in Salzburg. Back on the ship, check out in wellness classes on the spacious roof deck or dining in onboard restaurants that include a fancy Chef’s Table venue (where you might score a taste of Siberian caviar) and a wine bar. Seven-night cruise from $3,099 per person.

Iceland: Crystal Cruises’ new Crystal Endeavor

The land of fire and ice is open for cruising this summer, and several lines will be exploring the coast, bringing guests to lava fields, gigantic waterfalls, seabird colonies, and other striking landscapes under the Midnight Sun. Luxury line Crystal Cruises is debuting its new 200-passenger, polar-class Crystal Endeavor , equipped with two six-passenger helicopters, a six-passenger submarine and the only casino on an expedition ship, on 10-night sailings (fares from $16,499 per person). Circumnavigating Iceland from Reykjavík, the itinerary includes stops on the mainland and islands including Grimsey Island, above the Arctic Circle, where you might catch sight of rare little auks with their black and white plumage.

Italy: Disney’s Disney Magic cruise

If the upcoming Disney and Pixar movie “Luca” has the family hankering for Italy, get the crew on a Disney cruise that includes Genoa.

Attention Disney and Pixar fans. If, after seeing the movie Luca , which debuts June 18, your family gets a hankering to visit Italy, Disney Cruise Line has you covered. The 1,750-passenger Disney Magic will sail in Europe spring and summer 2022, with several sailings stopping in Italy. A six-night departure from Barcelona to Rome on June 4, 2022 (fares for a family of four sharing a cabin start at $6,732 per person), gets you to Genoa, which is key. Scenes from the movie, a 1950s coming-of-age story, are inspired by the area southeast of Genoa. An Ultimate Italian Riviera shore excursion ($159 per person) takes you to the town of Camogli and other sites that will look familiar to Luca fans. Disney is being mum about any possible movie-related character appearances and experiences.

All-Europe: Silversea’s Grand Europe cruise

If you are uneasy about returning to Europe this year, consider making up for lost time in one fell swoop. Ultraluxury line Silversea has assigned its 596-passenger Silver Moon to a Grand Europe itinerary embarking Athens on March 30, 2022, and hitting basically all major water-accessible attractions—72 ports of call in 22 countries in total—on a three-month itinerary that ends in Stockholm. Can’t be away that long? You can alternatively book a 37-night segment to visit 33 places in the Mediterranean, or a 53-night segment that will get you from Lisbon to Stockholm, including the British Isles, Scandinavia, and Russia. Fares for the whole shebang from $57,060 per person.

British Isles and Ireland: Hurtigruten

Visit Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway on a Hurtigruten cruise.

Visit Northern Ireland’s Giant’s Causeway on a Hurtigruten cruise.

Norwegian line Hurtigruten explores remote parts of the British Isles on a 12-night itinerary (from $6,741 per person) next spring and summer, with the recently updated 532-passenger Maud. Sailing roundtrip from Dover, United Kingdom, passengers will visit places known for Neolithic sites, bird colonies, whiskey, and woolens. Among the destinations are Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland, with easy access to the basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway, and Scotland’s Inner and Outer Hebrides, including the rocky and wild St. Kilda archipelago, home to the second-largest gannet colony in the world. Plan to sip on Islay Island, Scotland, home to nine distilleries, and have an opportunity to purchase crystal in Waterford, Ireland. For those looking to reduce their footprint as they return to travel, it’s worth noting that the ship was recently reconfigured to run partially on biofuel and lower emissions.

Mediterranean Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

As one of the greenest islands in Greece, Corfu is an emerald treasure amidst the colorful Mediterranean landscape. From Paleokastritsa, hike to the mountaintop for unparalleled views of the Ionian Sea. Or get a taste of Corfu when you team up with a famous chef, and handpick local produce that they’ll use to prepare your lunch. Experience it all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.

Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

As the largest port in the Mediterranean, Marseille is the gateway to opportunity. On a Mediterranean cruise, spend the day in Arles, and explore the landscapes that inspired much of Van Gogh’s artwork. Stroll through the MuSaMa, a soap museum, and create your own blend alongside a master soap maker. Or roam the city’s most popular landmark, Notre-Dame de la Garden, a Catholic basilica that overlooks the city.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Santorini is the epitome of Greece. Wander into the welcoming cafes in Oia, a village teeming with whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs. Continue to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and taste the bouquet of wines produced on the island, making sure to visit the black-sand beach of Kamari before heading back to your Mediterranean cruise ship.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean

In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.

World-Class Dining

Captivating cuisine

With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.

Bold reds and crisp whites

The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Ancient Ruins

Where history comes to life

From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art Galleries & Museums

Artistic ingenuity abounds

From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.

Sun-Kissed Beaches

A vision of natural beauty

Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Mediterranean excursions

Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. See the yacht-lined shores of Kotor while riding on a tuk tuk, an electric rickshaw. Savor the flavors of “Koum Kouat” liqueur, created from Corfu’s exclusive citrus plant. Or stroll along the streets of Dubrovnik’s Old town, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.

Local connections

From chefs and beverage makers to artists and guides, meet the many personalities that call the Mediterranean home with our Local Connections program. On a Mediterranean cruise, voyage to an olive tree farm just outside of Provence, and join your hosts for a unique olive oil tasting. Or explore the Archaeological Museum of Naples with a local artist, and accompany them for lunch to dive even deeper in Italy’s art scene.

More ashore

Enjoy even more opportunities to experience the colors, cultures and flavors of the Mediterranean with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Witness the beautiful sunset in Mykonos on a Greek cruise. Sit front-row for a flamenco dance, and savor a paella dinner during an evening in Barcelona. Or stroll the illuminated streets of Genoa with gelato in hand after a traditional Italian dinner.

Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.

How to Plan A European Cruise

By Lisa Wells December 1, 2019 Updated: June 6, 2023 · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

how to plan a European cruise, a step-by-step guide

Is a European cruise on your bucket list? Here's a step-by-step guide on how to plan a European cruise, including how to choose your destinations, cruise lines, embarkation port, book the right excursions and even a couple of cruise packing tips.

How to plan a European cruise, a step-by-step guide - Coastal Wandering

From Rome to London, from the Greek Islands to the Norwegian fjords, many of Europe's top places to visit are coastal destinations that you can visit on a European cruise. With over 200 ports of call to choose from, you can plan the trip you've always dreamed of.

Whether this is your first time cruising or your first time to Europe, you might be feeling overwhelmed at the thought of planning all of the small (but necessary) details that go into making your dream European vacation a reality. From trying to choose the right excursions for an authentic European experience to worrying about language barriers, it can feel like there are a lot of obstacles to overcome during the planning process.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, know this:

You're not alone. Even the most seasoned of travelers are prone to those feelings.

The good news?

You can use this strategic step-by-step guide to plan your European cruise while keeping those feelings of overwhelm in check. Here's everything you need to consider when planning your European cruise, including choosing the best times to travel, your destinations, what you’ll do at your ports of call, where you want your cabin to be, what you’ll pack, and even  the dos and don’ts for your cruise line .

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Planning A European Cruise

If you're wondering where the easy button is for planning your European cruise, this is it.

Whether you're planning to sunbathe in the Mediterranean or wander your way through the Scandinavian and Baltic countries in the north, use this step-by-step guide to move from overwhelm to living out the reality of your dream vacation in Europe.

Part 1: Plan Your European Cruise

The first steps in planning your European cruise are quite simple:

  • Choose when you'll be cruising.
  • Decide how long you'll travel.
  • Select a general region for your European cruise.
  • Confirm your cruise line and embarkation ports.

Here are more details to consider during each of these steps.

1. Choose When You'll Be Cruising

While there are ideal times to set sail, there is no definitively "perfect" time of year. That said there are a couple of things to keep in mind when you're planning your European cruise.

Here are some tips and tricks to help choose the right time of year to set sail, based on the three main European cruise regions:

Northern Europe (Including Scandinavian & Baltic Cruises)

Personally, I enjoy Northern Europe's weather best in the summer months. I took a Norwegian fjords cruise at the summer solstice (June) and it was amazing to cruise at night and have it still be light outside.

European cruise sailing Norwegian fjords - Coastal Wandering

Also, if you're planning to head out on a Northern Europe cruise, the fjords are really not to be missed. The sights are incredible and completely unlike anything you'd see on a Mediterranean or Caribbean cruise .

That said, cruising Northern Europe in the winter might be for you if you're hoping to catch some jaw-dropping views of the northern lights. Scandinavian winter cruises offer some of the best viewing opportunities in the entire world. If the northern lights are what you're after, look for cruises around the spring equinox (March).

Western Mediterranean

First things first, it's important to know that many cruise lines begin repositioning their Mediterranean ships in October and early November. While there are a handful of cruise lines – like Costa Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Viking Ocean – that continue to cruise during the off-season, know that your selection will be somewhat limited.

That said, while summer marks the high travel season in Europe, I prefer traveling around Europe in the fall. Primarily because it's less crowded and not as hot (but still quite nice weather-wise). Cruising to Europe allows you to still get out on the ocean, travel to bucket-list-worthy destinations and totally miss Caribbean cruises hurricane season!

Eastern Mediterranean

Similar to the western Mediterranean cruise region, you'll see a more limited selection of cruise travel options during the winter months.

The peak season for the eastern Mediterranean region falls between June and September, though July and August certainly see the most travelers. Again, my preference for this region falls onto the shoulder seasons from mid-September to November or May through June.

Why? The reason is simple: fewer tourists. Greece and Turkey get particularly busy during those summer months and it can be brutally hot. Cruising during the shoulder seasons helps combat both of those elements.

2. Decide How Long You'll Travel

While you can find European cruises lasting anywhere from three hours to three weeks, the majority of European cruise itineraries will last between 5 and 14 nights. And if you're hoping to visit a handful of countries, you're in luck. You can expect to visit anywhere between three to four countries during a one-week cruise!

European cruise Geiranger Norway - Coastal Wandering

In general, European ports are closer in proximity to one another than you'll find on Caribbean cruises. So even if you choose a shorter cruise, you're still likely to see plenty of destinations. In fact, you won't see too many days at sea because of this.

If you're like me (traveling to Europe from the United States), I also highly recommend adding extra days to your travel itinerary to explore your embarkation city and combat some of the inevitable jet lag you may feel upon your arrival in Europe.

No matter how long you decide to travel for, remember:

Europe isn't around the corner! Give yourself enough travel time to make your trip worth the 8+ hours of one-way flight time.

3. Select a General Region for Your European Cruise

This is the fun part – which destinations are we going to be ticking off the bucket list on this adventure?

Here are some of the most popular European regions for cruising.

Northern Europe & Scandinavia

This is your chance to get a glimpse of destinations like the British Isles or the Norwegian Fjords. These Northern European cruises might not offer beach time, but they make up for it with beautiful historical sights, incredible natural vistas and a wide variety of cultural heritage.

European cruise Alesund Norway - Coastal Wandering

Itineraries for cruises that travel this region might include countries like:

  • Netherlands

Pro Tip: The Norwegian fjords are breathtaking. Do not miss this spectacular natural sight! That said, as you might expect, many Norwegian fjord cruises travel primarily within Norway. If you're hoping to see a variety of European countries, look for itineraries that include more destinations.

If you're dreaming of slightly warmer weather, a cruise in the eastern Mediterranean might be the perfect fit. Eastern Mediterranean cruises are a particularly great choice for travelers looking for a balance between beach time and historic architecture. You could find yourself wandering around the Acropolis in Athens and soaking up some sunshine in Kusadasi all on the same trip!

Eastern Mediterranean cruise itineraries typically include countries like:

Pro Tip: If you find yourself in Dubrovnik, don’t miss walking the old city walls. The views are incredible. And any Game of Thrones fans will quickly recognize some of the most iconic sights of King's Landing.

European cruise Dubrovnik Croatia - Coastal Wandering

Western Mediterranean cruises are a great way to see some of the most beautiful cities in Europe. You're likely to see plenty of Italian cities like Taormina (Sicily), Florence, Naples, Sorrento, and Venice, as well as a variety of French towns like Marseille, Nice, and Corsica. You might also find places like Tenerife and La Palma (Canary Islands) on the itinerary. But no matter your destinations, you're sure to get your fill of historic sights, local cuisine and plenty of charming shops.

European cruise Sicily Italy - Coastal Wandering

Here are some of the countries you can expect to see on a western Mediterranean cruise itinerary:

  • And may even include Morroco

Pro Tip: You are unlikely to find western Mediterranean cruises running during the winter months. If you find yourself hankering to country hop through the countries mentioned above, you're best to do so during the summer and early fall.

River Cruises in Europe

Unlike the other European regions mentioned above, river cruises set sail from destinations that are further inland, like Keoln or Budapest. The full river cruise season typically runs from March until the end of December, though some (particularly those running through France) end their runs in October.

You can cruise from Vienna or Amsterdam (or beyond) and what's really neat about river cruises is that the ships are much smaller . Compare the average 3,000 passengers on a Caribbean or Mediterranean cruise to the mere 200 guests on a river cruise boat. And you'll find that there's usually a stop every day, meaning you get to see a lot in a relatively short amount of time. It's a totally different cruising experience!

I haven’t done a full river cruise yet (it’s on my bucket list), but I have done a day cruise on the Rhine taking in Rudesheim and Koblenz. It was truly amazing seeing the castles from the river and exploring the historic towns!

The most popular river cruises in Europe travel through countries like:

  • Switzerland

Some of the most popular European river cruises are found traveling along the Danube, Rhine, Seine, and Rhone, though there are also river cruises that run in Portugal's Duoro and even on the Volga River in Russia.

Of course, expect your weather to be typical to the regular weather you'd experience in the countries you're traveling through. Russia can be quite cold, even in the fall! The same goes for countries like Germany and Switzerland.

Pro Tip: If you've dreamed of wandering through European Christmas markets with a mug of delicious Glühwein in hand, check for river cruises running along the Danube and Rhine in November and December.

4. Confirm Your Cruise Line & Embarkation Port

You've got a general idea of when you're traveling, how long you're traveling for and where you'll be traveling to...now it's time to choose your cruise line and embarkation port. Keep in mind that you may wish to choose your itinerary based on the embarkation port or for a particular cruise line.

I’ve cruised with Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Carnival in Europe, though there are plenty of other cruise lines operating in the region. And as far as embarkation ports go, my preference is always to fly to Europe.

While you can cruise from New York or Florida to Europe, you’ll have more sea days on a transatlantic crossing and fewer port days to explore Europe than on a typical European cruise. I’ve sailed Europe from Venice, London (Southhampton) and Rome (Civitavecchia), though my favorite port to sail out of is Venice because you’re in the heart of the city and cruise right by St. Mark’s square!

European cruise sailing into Venice - Coastal Wandering

Here are the cruise lines and most popular embarkation ports to consider for each of the European cruising regions.

Northern Europe & Scandinavian Cruise Lines

If you're sailing towards Northern Europe and Scandinavia, you'll want to consider cruise lines like:

  • Holland America
  • Norwegian Cruises
  • Princess Cruises
  • Celebrity Cruises
  • Carnival
  • Viking Ocean Cruises
  • Costa Cruise Lines
  • MSC Cruises

Many of the Northern European cruises embark from Southampton, Dublin, Amsterdam, and Bergen. If you're setting sail on a Scandinavia-only cruise, your most likely embarkation points will be found in Stockholm and Copenhagen.

Mediterranean Cruise Lines

If you're setting sail on the Mediterranean, you'll want to consider cruise lines like:

  • Royal Caribbean International

Almost all of the western Mediterranean cruises embark from Southampton. Many of the eastern Mediterranean cruises embark from Athens or Civitavecchia.

River Cruise Lines

If you've decided on a river cruise, you'll want to look at cruise lines like:

  • Viking River Cruises
  • AmaWaterways
  • Avalon Waterways
  • Uniworld River Cruises

While there are other river cruise lines operating in Europe, the cruise lines mentioned above definitely have the widest variety of cruise itineraries.

While all of these cruise lines embark from Basel, Budapest, Amsterdam or Nuremberg, there are plenty of other options for your embarkation point.

Pro Tip: Use  this cruise search tool  to make finalizing your booking details easy! Simply set where you’re going and the dates you'd like to travel, as well as other specific criteria like a particular departure port, cruise length, or cruise line and it will show you all the cruises that fit your preferences. From there you can see all the details about the ship, the exact itinerary (including which destinations the cruise covers) and pricing for each cruise option.

Part 2: Book your European cruise

Now that you have many of the big details in place, it's time to book your cruise and nail down some of the fun vacation details – like which type of cabin you'll book and what type of excursions to look for!

During this stage in your planning you'll be:

  • Choose your cabin type and location.
  • Plan travel to and from your embarkation point.
  • Book your onshore excursions.

1. Choose Your Cabin Type & Location

Next up: choosing your cabin. You’ll pick your exact cabin on the ship map when you book your cruise. It's just like booking a seat on a plane!

Cabins on European Ocean Cruise Ships

When it comes to the types of rooms on larger cruise ships, you’ll have your choice of inside rooms, exterior rooms, and suites. Know that while inside rooms are certainly budget-friendly, they don't have any windows. If you like to wake up with the sun, an inside room is not a good choice for you.

Exterior rooms will always have either windows or a balcony. I always get an exterior room with a balcony – preferably an extended balcony. It’s one of my favorite places on the ship to watch the waves!

Pro Tip: Most cruises have room service included. One of my favorite things to do is order breakfast to enjoy on my balcony while watching the ship pull into port. It's a great way to start a day of adventure!

European cruise Geiranger Norway - Coastal Wandering

The other consideration you’ll want to look at is the location of your room. You’ll see options of midship, forward, or aft, as well as higher or lower deck. Your best bet is to consider the restaurants, pool, spa or other amenities onboard that you plan to use and choose a room that’s relatively close to that area of the ship.

Pro Tip:  Look for forward (front of the ship), aft (back of the ship) or corner rooms as they will often have more space or an extended balcony. Or conversely, the center of the ship will have the least motion. If you're concerned about seasickness, choose a midship cabin closer to sea level.

Cabins on European River Cruise Ships

You'll find that while cabins on river cruise ships vary quite drastically from one cruise to another, all of these cruise ships have one thing in common. No inside rooms! So all staterooms onboard will have at least one window . This is primarily due to the necessity for these ships to be more narrow than ocean liners – they have to maneuver a river after all!

Many river cruise cabins offer the little luxury of a French balcony. Open your stateroom doors and let in that fresh air! While you won't have access to any outdoor space, having a French balcony still provides you with a beautiful view of your surroundings. Don't worry – there will be a railing. There's no need to worry about falling into the river!

2. Planning Travel To & From Your Embarkation Point

The great thing about European cruises is that you have lots of flexibility when it comes to your points of embarkation and disembarkation.

You can sail in and out of the same port or start in one city and end in another, for example, Athens to Barcelona or Rome to London. Pay careful attention to those embarkation and disembarkation points, knowing that starting and ending in different cities could increase the cost of your airfare.

I would highly recommend giving yourself extra time on either end of your cruise. There's lots to do and see in Europe and many of the embarkation and disembarkation destinations are major metropolitan hubs. It would be a shame to fly in and out of Rome without seeing the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum or trying best pizza in Rome !

Pro Tip: You might see some cruise packages that include your hotel and flights. While certainly convenient, these packages can be more expensive than taking care of your own booking arrangements.

3. Book Your Onshore Excursions

This is admittedly my favorite part of planning a cruise. It's so much fun to dig into all of the various things to do and see in each European city!

European cruise Geiranger Norway - Coastal Wandering

If you've sailed on a Caribbean cruise before, you'll want to take note here. Planning onshore excursions in Europe is a little different for one key reason: many of the European cities listed as ports are actually an hour or two drive or train from the port. You'll want to plan your day accordingly!

For example:

  • Civitavecchia to Rome is just over an hour by train or car
  • Southampton to London is anywhere between 1.5 to 2 hours by train or car
  • Livorno to Florence travel ranges widely from 2 hours by car to 3.5+ hours by a mix of train and bus travel

There is usually a shuttle service offered by the cruise line as an excursion if you just want transportation to the city to explore on your own. This might be easier and more time-efficient than trying to figure out public transit by yourself. Particularly in countries like Italy where you may not feel overly confident in your ability to ask for directions if you get lost!

To book a tour or not book a tour, that's the question.

Keep in mind that you may wish to do some of the big historic attractions, like the Colosseum, with an organized tour. There are a few reasons to do so:

  • Waiting in lines can eat up your day onshore. And the lines can be really long. Booking a skip-the-line tour (like this one for the Colosseum ) can help you make the most of your day.
  • An expert tour guide can help you gain a better appreciation for the history behind many of the places you're about to visit.
  • Often, organized tours may also gain you access to places that are not normally accessible to the public. Again, this gives you a better chance of making more of your time exploring!

Of course, other areas, like Mykonos, are perfect for wandering and exploring on your own. Or you can book an independent tour like one of these best London food tours .

You won't be able to see everything in one day. The bottom line here is to do your research in advance and figure out what your top priorities are and where it may make the most sense to book with a tour group.

Part 3: Next Steps

At this point, the hard parts in planning your European cruise are out of the way. Your cruise line is booked, cabin selected, you know where you're traveling to and you probably even have a handful of excursions bookmarked.

European cruise sailing out of Dover - Coastal Wandering

So, what's next? Details. Small details that aren't necessarily fun, but are incredibly important.

Here are your next steps:

  • Ensure your vaccinations and travel documents are in order.
  • Plan your packing list .

1. Ensure Your Vaccinations & Travel Documents Are In Order

Right now, if you're a United States or Canadian citizen, the only document you're likely to need while traveling in Europe is your passport.

Likewise, because most of the countries you're likely to visit fall within the European Union or Schengen Zone, you won't need a visa either. You'll simply be considered a "short-stay visitor," which allows you to stay within the Schengen area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Many of the non-Schengen countries included on European cruises, like Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, also allow short stay visits of less than 90 days without a visa. So unless you're planning to do some extended traveling in Europe , there's no need to fuss with a visa.

That said, European travel regulations are slated to change in the coming years. If you're looking further ahead into 2021, be aware that depending on when you travel you may need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) visa waiver. Something to keep in mind and keep an eye on.

You'll need to check with your doctor regarding any vaccines you might need for travel. While European countries don't typically require too many (or any) additional vaccines, you'll want to check in with a travel medicine specialist at least a month before you head out on your European cruise. You can also do a little research on the CDC  and US Department of Health & Human Services websites.

Packing list

You're likely to be traveling to a number of countries in a short amount of time. Make sure to plan for a range of weather. I’ve ended up buying scarfs and gloves in Norway in summer and in Italy in fall. I didn’t need them every day, but the weather was changeable and we had a day or two that was chilly.

European cruise sailing Norwegian fjords - Coastal Wandering

(With this in mind it can be more difficult to  travel carry-on only , but it's not impossible.)

No matter which size suitcase you choose to pack, there are a few key items you'll want to make sure are in your suitcase before you set sail.

The two absolute must-have items for your European cruise:

  • Comfortable walking shoes for exploring UNESCO world heritage sites and walking on cobblestones
  • Beach gear for warmer destinations, like the Greek Islands and South of France

Along with these key items, you’ll also want to confirm dining attire for your cruise ship, because some cruise lines offer formal dinners and theme nights. Knowing this in advance will allow you to make the most of all the fun your cruise line has to offer by packing everything you'll need.

You're Ready to Set Sail On Your European Cruise

That wasn't so hard, was it? This is how I plan my cruises and how I recommend you plan yours. Step by step. There's no need to feel overwhelmed when you have a strategy!

With this planning and research under your belt, you're sure to have a wonderful time exploring all of the incredible sights, culture, and cuisine that Europe has to offer.

european cruise options

Cruising can be the ultimate escape, offering you the chance to relax in style and luxury while simultaneously allowing the freedom to explore new places with ease. Cruises offer variety, options, good food, and a touch of romance. Cruising can range from the very affordable to the very expensive, depending on which cruise line, destination, and duration you choose, but at the end of the day there are cruise options to fit every travel preference and budget. There are many reasons why people love European cruises. Perhaps you’ve already done your share of Mexican Riviera or Caribbean cruises and are ready to proceed across the pond. Maybe you’ve always wanted to go to Europe and want a sampler of as many different places as possible (cruises are great for that). Whatever your reason, European cruises are a great option for a family vacation, romantic getaway, or adults-only adventure. But where to start? If you’re new to cruising the continent, you may find the bevy of options overwhelming. That’s why WorldMark by Wyndham Travel has compiled this list of handy information and recommendations for you — to help you streamline your decision-making process for what type of cruise you’d like, where to go, and when to book. Read on for a comprehensive overview of your options for European cruises.

Ocean versus river.

The first major decision you’ll need to make is whether you’re looking for an ocean or a river cruise. Ocean cruises in Europe stick to ports of call that are accessible only by sea — the Mediterranean, the Aegean, the Adriatic, and the Baltic. River cruises, however, offer the chance to hit ports of call along Europe’s major rivers, giving the chance to see more inland territory in a smaller geographic region. Ocean cruise vessels are larger, often accommodating thousands of passengers, while river cruise vessels (with few exceptions) tend to cap out around 200 passengers. Ocean cruises have more amenities — think waterslides, movie theaters, casinos, etc. — while river cruises tend to be more low-key. Once you’ve chosen either ocean or river as your preference, you can go on to selecting your destinations and duration.

Ocean options.

Europe is a vast continent, home to more than 40 countries and numerous bodies of water, large and small. Most, but not all, European cruises include a Mediterranean Sea component, some blending into other large areas like the Adriatic and Aegean seas, while others hit the Baltic Sea, the English Channel, the North Sea, and even the Black Sea. Which ocean cruise you pick will depend largely on which countries and ports of call interest you most. Western Mediterranean. Cruises on the western side of the Mediterranean Sea hit countries like Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy, with some cruise lines offering ports of call in places like Malta, Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Common Ports of Call • Barcelona, Spain • Lisbon, Portugal • Marseille, France • Rome, Italy The Adriatic. Cruises to the Adriatic Sea make stops in countries like Italy, Greece, Croatia, and Montenegro. Common Ports of Call • Venice, Italy • Athens, Greece • Dubrovnik, Croatia • Kotor, Montenegro The Aegean. Cruises to the Aegean Sea visit primarily the Greek Isles and Turkey. Common Ports of Call • Athens, Greece • Santorini, Greece • Istanbul, Turkey • Limassol, Cyprus English Channel/British Isles. Cruises through the English Channel visit countries in the British Isles like England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and in addition some cruise lines offer a port of call in France. Common Ports of Call • Dublin, Ireland • Liverpool, England • Edinburgh, Scotland • Holyhead, Wales Scandinavia and the Baltic. Cruises that go through the Baltic Sea hit countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland, with less common stops in places like Poland, Estonia, and even Russia. Common Ports of Call • Oslo, Norway • Stockholm, Sweden • Helsinki, Finland • Copenhagen, Denmark Eastern Mediterranean/Holy Land. Cruises on the eastern side of the Mediterranean Sea hit countries like Greece, Israel, Egypt, and Turkey, with some cruise lines offering ports of call in places like Cyprus, Jordan, and Crete. Common Ports of Call • Athens, Greece • Jerusalem, Israel • Alexandria, Egypt • Istanbul, Turkey

River regions.

Europe is home to more than a dozen major rivers, some of which run through multiple countries and touch many of Europe’s biggest metropolitan areas. River cruising in Europe has come in vogue in recent years, with multiple luxury river cruise lines rising in popularity. River cruise options include most major European countries, from east to west and everything in between. As with ocean cruises, which river cruise you choose should be determined by which countries you most want to visit.

Upper Danube. The Danube is one of Europe’s longest rivers, so Danube cruises are generally broken up into upper and lower regions. Upper Danube cruises go through Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary.

Common Ports of Call

  • Munich, Germany
  • Vienna, Austria
  • Budapest, Hungary
  • Bratislava, Slovakia

What's next?

Now that you’ve reviewed your options for ocean and river cruises and hopefully pegged your next amazing cruise getaway, it’s time to cover a few additional important points. These questions and answers should help get you perfectly well prepared to book your next vacation on the high seas.

When should you cruise?

August being the most popular times. If you’re looking for warm (and even hot) weather and don’t mind crowds, summer is the best time to go. If you prefer lower crowds and still warm weather, May through June and September are better choices. Baltic cruises tend to be the exception — since they’re farther north, spring and fall tend to be much colder on the Baltic, so the summer months truly are the best (and warmest) time to for a Baltic cruise.

When should you book?

For all cruises, booking well in advance is always a good idea. Seasoned travel agents recommend booking a cruise nine to twelve months in advance, paying close attention to seasonal cruise sales and promotional offers. If your travel plans are flexible, you can sometimes capitalize on an amazing deal on a last minute booking, as little as a few weeks before your cruise departs.

What should you pack?

Outside of your clothing and toiletries, there are several key things you won’t want to forget at home when you cruise through Europe. Here are the top five most important things to remember to throw in your luggage before you hit the high seas. 1. Passport — you’ll need it to get into the European countries you cruise through, and to get back home when you’re done. 2. Comfy Walking Shoes — you’ll be exploring some of Europe’s most majestic sites, and much of it will be on foot so be prepared with appropriate footwear. 3. Chargers & Adapters — you’ll want to keep your electronics charged, so make sure to pack the appropriate cords and cables, plus a voltage adapter if needed. 4. Secure Bag — you’ll want someplace safe to store your wallet and phone while you’re exploring, so whether that’s a fanny pack or a cross-body, it’s good to be conscientious because pickpocketing really does happen. 5. Shawl/Head Covering — if your cruise takes you to sites of religious significance (which many European cruises do), some places will require ladies’ heads, shoulders, arms, and legs to be covered. A shawl, wrap, or scarf should do the trick.

  • Book early: Cruise lines often offer early booking discounts, so start researching and planning your cruise well in advance.
  • Be flexible with your travel dates: Prices can vary significantly depending on the season and month. Traveling during the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) may offer better deals and fewer crowds.
  • Look for last-minute deals: If you have a flexible schedule, you might find fantastic last-minute deals on European cruises.
  • Consider booking a repositioning cruise: These cruises occur when a ship changes its homeport and offers one-way itineraries at a discounted rate.
  • Work with a travel agent: A knowledgeable travel agent can help you find the best deals and navigate the myriad of options available when planning a European cruise.

By following these tips and researching your options, you’ll be well on your way to planning an unforgettable European cruise adventure.

Packing for a European Cruise

Knowing what to pack for your European cruise can make your vacation more enjoyable and stress-free. Here are some essentials and tips to help you prepare for your journey:

  • Clothing: Pack versatile clothing that can be easily layered, as temperatures can vary greatly between different European destinations and weather conditions. Include comfortable walking shoes, casual clothes for daytime activities, swimwear, and formal attire for evenings and special events on the ship.
  • Travel documents: Bring your passport, cruise documents, and any necessary visas for the countries you will be visiting. It’s also a good idea to have photocopies of these documents in case of loss or theft.
  • Medications and toiletries: Remember to pack any prescription medications, as well as over-the-counter items like pain relievers, motion sickness medication, and sunscreen. While some toiletries may be provided by the cruise line, it’s a good idea to bring your own favorites, especially if you have specific preferences or allergies.
  • Adaptors and chargers: European countries use different electrical outlets than the United States, so be sure to pack a universal adapter. Also, bring chargers for your electronic devices, such as your phone, camera, and tablet.
  • Money and cards: Bring a combination of cash, credit cards, and debit cards for use on your trip. Notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel plans to avoid any issues with card usage while abroad.
  • Snacks and reusable water bottle: Although food is plentiful on the ship, having some snacks for port days can be helpful. A reusable water bottle will help you stay hydrated during your excursions and reduce plastic waste.
  • Guidebooks and language resources: Research your destinations in advance and consider bringing guidebooks, maps, or language phrasebooks to help you navigate and communicate while in port.
  • Travel accessories: Pack items like a travel pillow, eye mask, and earplugs to help ensure a comfortable flight and good night’s sleep on the ship. A lightweight daypack or crossbody bag can also be useful for carrying essentials during port excursions.

Cruise Photo Packages

Cruise lines often offer professional photography services to capture special moments during your vacation. Here are some tips for making the most of cruise photo packages:

  • Research your cruise line’s photo packages in advance: Familiarize yourself with the various photo packages offered by your cruise line, as well as their prices. This will help you budget and decide which package is the best fit for you.
  • Check for promotions and discounts: Cruise lines may offer promotions or discounts on photo packages, either in advance or once you’re onboard. Be sure to inquire about any available deals to save on your cruise photos.
  • Capture special moments: Make the most of your photo package by posing for pictures during formal nights, themed parties, and special events. You can also schedule a private photo session with the ship’s photographer to capture more intimate and personalized moments.
  • Review your photos regularly: Cruise photographers take many photos throughout the voyage. Be sure to review your photos at the ship’s photo gallery regularly and select your favorites to be included in your package.
  • Digital and print options: Consider whether you prefer digital copies, printed photos, or a combination of both. Digital copies offer more flexibility for sharing and printing, while printed photos provide a tangible keepsake of your vacation.

By planning your packing list and exploring cruise photo packages, you’ll be well-prepared for your European cruise adventure and ready to capture lasting memories.

How Upgrading Your Volkswagen Can Help Boost Performance Are you a Volkswagen owner who wants to get the most out of your vehicle? Many drivers are surprised to learn that by upgrading their VW, they can improve its overall performance and increase its longevity. Whether it’s installing a new exhaust system, adding a turbocharger to boost power, or making more subtle improvements, there are many ways to upgrade a Volkswagen for increased efficiency. Let's take a look at some of the key benefits associated with improving your VW as well as giving advice on how they can be implemented in the simplest way possible. Read on! Image source: https://unsplash.com/photos/gSnyL1T935o Invest In Air-Cooled Parts If you're a proud owner of an air-cooled Volkswagen, you know how important it is to maintain your beloved vehicle's performance and functionality. it doesn't matter if you're a casual driver or a seasoned enthusiast, investing in high-quality air-cooled VW parts is essential to keep your car running smoothly for years to come. From replacement engines to cooling systems, brake pads to suspension components — your VW deserves the best, and air-cooled parts are the way to go! These parts will be sure to maximize your car's overall performance and preserve its originality and character. Don't settle for anything less than the best for your air-cooled VW; invest in top-notch parts and take your cruising experience to the next level. Understand Your Vehicle’s Capabilities Do you ever wonder what your car is capable of? Learning about the engine and other components within your VW can give you a better understanding of its capabilities. Aside from providing insights into how your car works, it might even help you choose the best upgrades to enhance its performance. For example, if you know that your engine is capable of handling a turbocharger, this could be a great upgrade to increase horsepower and torque. Additionally, understanding the limitations of your vehicle can also prevent damage from being done during upgrades. Knowing the weight limits for suspension upgrades or the recommended oil viscosity for engine modifications can ensure that your VW remains in top condition after making changes. Upgrade To A High-Performance Exhaust System One of the most common modifications for VW owners is upgrading to a high-performance exhaust system. This can increase horsepower, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance the overall driving experience. When you replace your stock exhaust with one that has larger pipes and less restrictive mufflers, you can allow more air to flow through the system, resulting in increased power and smoother performance. A high-performance exhaust system can also make your car sound better. The deep and throaty rumble of a performance exhaust is sure to turn heads as you drive by. Invest In Quality Tires Of course, don't underestimate the impact that quality tires can have on your VW's performance. Choosing the right tires for your driving style and environment is crucial for optimal handling, grip, and safety. High-performance tires offer improved traction and handling, while all-season or winter tires are perfect for those who live in areas with inclement weather. Investing in quality tires can improve your fuel efficiency, as they can reduce rolling resistance and help your car glide more easily on the road. Plus, with the right tires, you'll have a smoother and more comfortable ride. Install An Air Intake Filter Your engine is the heart of your vehicle, and just like it's important to keep your own heart healthy, it's essential to keep your engine healthy too. The simplest way to protect your engine is by installing an air intake filter. This small component can make a big difference in your engine's performance. The air filter aims to keep out dust, dirt, and debris while also allowing oxygen to flow into your engine. This means that your engine will be able to breathe better, which can lead to more power and efficiency. With the change of seasons, it's a great time to check your air filter and see if it needs to be replaced. Take care of your engine with an air intake filter, and you'll ensure it runs smoothly and efficiently for miles to come. Consider Replacing Spark Plugs The spark plugs are often an overlooked component of your vehicle, yet they play a critical role in your Volkswagen's performance. Spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture in your engine's combustion chamber, which in turn powers your vehicle. Over time, these plugs can wear out or get dirty, leading to less efficient combustion and decreased performance. But if you replace your old spark plugs with high-performance ones, you can ensure optimal combustion, enhancing your engine's power and fuel efficiency. This simple upgrade can make a noticeable difference in how your VW performs, drives, and even sounds. Upgrade Your Suspension System Upgrading your suspension system can greatly improve the handling and overall driving experience of your Volkswagen. By replacing old or worn-out shocks, struts, and springs with performance ones, you can reduce body roll, increase stability during cornering, and enhance control over bumpy roads. Not only will a suspension upgrade make your VW more fun to drive, but it can also improve safety by allowing you to better handle unexpected road conditions. With so many options available, you can choose a suspension system that suits your specific driving needs and preferences. Opt For Regular Servicing And Maintenance While upgrades and modifications can take your Volkswagen's performance to the next level, don't forget about the importance of regular servicing and maintenance. Another advantage of taking a cruise is that passengers can visit several destinations during the journey. During these cruises, passengers can visit destinations in the United States, Tenerife, Portugal, Spain, the UK, the Caribbean, and the Netherlands. The journey usually begins at a port in the United States or Europe and ends at another, stopping at various islands along the way. Packed with diverse museums, world-class restaurants, outdoor activities, and vibrant nightlife, Akureyri is one of Iceland's largest cities. Loved by the locals and a must-visit for travelers, its population of under 20,000 people makes it the biggest indicator that size doesn't really matter.

Hugely influential in the Renaissance era, mornings can be spent exploring the awe-inspiring architecture, while the youthful energy of the local shops and bars offer a vibrant afternoon. And with Mount Etna looming nearby, hiking the stratovolcano provides an earthy contrast to the bustling city.

Chania, Crete

As the largest of the Greek Isles, Crete makes you feel like time stands still. It’s a place where remnants of Venetian and Turkish architecture stand next to old townhouses transformed into hip restaurants, and glassy waters and swirls of pastel-pink sands make for beaches fit for postcards.

Civitavecchia (Rome)

With a home port only steps from Civitavecchia's diverse neighborhoods, Sailors will uncover hidden secrets from local market cooking classes to modern and historic art in this vibrant seaside, architecturally stunning European city.

Famous for its emerald-capped mountains and 125 miles of coastline, “The Evergreen Greek Island” of Corfu refers to more than just its stunning colors. See the city through its famed architecture, immerse yourself in the nightlife (2am departure), or take a cable car up to Mount Srd for surreal views of the Adriatic Sea.

Tucked between the mountains and the Madeira coastline, Funchal is known as, "God's Floating Garden". From its center, filled with bars, cafes, and galleries, to the flora-covered coasts and dramatic cliffs that line the emerald-blue sea — this Portuguese city (and its wine) beg to be experienced.

This British territory on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula may be small, but packs a strong global punch. Inspect the intricate caves of it towering limestone mass, the Rock , view the wonder via helicopter or stay land-bound for cafes, shopping and people-watching in town.

Days can be spent hiking, scuba diving, or exploring the city’s center for fresh seafood and martinis.

Greenock (Glasgow)

A classic Scottish port town, Greenock is a beautiful place with a lot of history.  Spend time in the uber-green Scottish countryside of Lyle Hill or visit a historic cathedral before making your way the 40-minute commute to Glasgow.

Arrive at golden hour for a catamaran sunset sail before jetting to one of Ibiza's famed night clubs. For those more into delicious than dancing, try an olive oil or local winery eco-tour, carve out a secluded spa day complete with a mind-balancing yoga class, or just let the old city guide you.

Set on an arching peninsula, Ísafjörður is a charming patchwork of 18th-century timber and tin-clad buildings, towering peaks and dark fjord waters. From hitting the town and hiking hills to fine dining and Swamp Soccer, you’ll fall in love with the land of fire and ice before the day is over.

Founded nearly 1,000 years ago, Kirkwall has gone from a Viking village to a thriving town whose modern influences have always kept the Viking spirit alive and well. With an award-winning town center, you’ll find plenty of mouth-watering places to eat and drink and tons of quaint shops.

Uncover centuries of history in one of the oldest cities in Europe and among the oldest continuously inhabited in the world. Sailors can venture off to visit Alhambra, a beautiful old-world palace, or just spend the day reveling in the small town charm.

With a backdrop of white-marked mountains covered in what appears to be snow, Marina di Carrara is actually blanketed with some of the world's purest marble – a geographically rare site. On the border of Tuscany and Liguria, get access to Lucca, Pisa, Portofino and the breathtaking Cinque Terre.

One look at this southern port town and it’s clear why Van Gogh was inspired to paint here. Go from France’s second-largest city, to scenic and historical countryside in minutes. Medieval villages feel frozen in time as do the Starry Nights (actually frozen in Van Gogh’s painting of that name).

Mykonos may be famous for its beach club parties and electric nightlife, but the Greek Isle has a notably quiet side, too. With overnight stays, you can explore the charm of the cafe-lined waterfront promenades, or tour the vineyards tucked charmingly into the gorgeous hillsides of the island.

A name synonymous with Italian culture and cuisine is undoubtedly Naples. Known for a wide range of things — from the ancient ruins of Pompeii, the Bay of Naples, Mount Vesuvius and of course the home of the Napolitano pizza.

Palermo, Sicily

Explore the various Piazzas, peruse the various shops and outdoor markets that fully envelop what a melting pot Palermo is, tour the iconic Teatro Massimo Vittorio Emanuele and, indulge in (arguably) the world’s best pizza – or go on a tour of all the places from HBO’s White Lotus.

Set sail from Portsmouth, United Kingdom on Scarlet Lady's Long Weekender or Summer WeekDaze itineraries.

Featuring otherworldly, mostly untouched landscapes, an eccentric food and drink scene, endless opportunities for outdoor adventure, blue lagoons, volcanoes, glaciers, lava fields and a thriving nightlife, Reykjavik will quickly become one of your favorite places in the world.

A hot spot for writers and artists, Rhodes is where the Byzantine Empire meets modern cultural ingenuity. Whether wandering the cobbled streets of Old Town for delicious Greek bites, exploring the perched-on-a-hill village of Lindos, or hitting up famed Faliraki Beach — this island truly has it all.

Arguably the most striking of the islands, Tenerife somehow boasts remote mountain-ridge villages, charming ancient towns, and a bustling cosmopolitan city. Cool off in the natural salt-water pools, discover the volcanic sand beaches, or head to a seaside restaurant for a glass of homemade sangria.

As the Greek Goddess of the Cyclades Islands, Santorini is known for breathtaking panoramas, fiery orange and blue sunsets, and the famed red and black beaches. Take in views from the blue and white dotted hills of Oia, or enjoy locally-made wine while sailing along the waters of the Caldera coast.

Settled between lush mountains and the sparkling sea, Split is Croatia's second-largest city and one of the Adriatic's most energetic ports. Packed with Roman ruins, medieval churches, stylish shops, and hip bars, Split offers mesmerizing views and intoxicating experiences you won't want to resist.

Visit the beautiful Lews Castle, go on a guided swimming or boat tour where outdoor adventure meets wildlife, or have a pint at one of the many cafes.

A gateway to charming towns in Provence, access both coastline and countryside in France’s second largest naval port. Originally a fishermen’s village, its coveted Mourillon quarter still boasts original architecture with a daily market, chic little boutiques and seaside restaurants. Bon appetit!

Valencia truly encompasses everything that the Mediterranean is about. Take a tour through the incredible old town tasting wine and indulging in as many tapas as you can, tour the litany of impressive architectural gems that call this eclectic city home or go on an outdoor adventure.

A fortress city known for its cathedrals, sprawling gardens and museums it feels like you’re entering a different time when you step foot here – plus there’s no shortage of mystical blue lagoons and natural swimming pools to take a dip or explore.

Your Guide to All-Inclusive European Cruises

DIVE INTO DELICIOUS DINING

Main Dining Room Mozzarella Salad

Dining is a critically important part of every holiday and onboard Royal Caribbean you’ll find some of the most fabulous food at sea – served up free of charge, as often as you like! For breakfast, lunch or dinner, Windjammer Café is the go-to spot for a wide array of freshly-prepared options, served buffet-style in a relaxed setting. Feeling somewhat more formal? Head over to the impressive multi-level Main Dining Room where a rotating menu features such tantalising international flavours as escargots and Moroccan ahi tuna. Keep in mind that the food is complimentary, so feel free to order all the dishes that tempt you!

For on-the-go, all-inclusive refuelling, you’ll find many casual dining venues. Although they may vary by ship, soul-satisfying options include Sorrento’s Pizza with its heavenly slices of pie, El Loco Fresh ® and its loco good fiesta of flavours, and the Dog House’s howlingly savoury sausages.

CHALLENGE YOUR INNER DAREDEVIL

iFly by Ripcord Little Girl Flying

Did you ever imagine you would go skydiving at sea, experiencing the adrenaline-amping rush of plunging through space? No? Well, RipCord® by iFly® invites you to test your mettle – at no cost other than the possible fraying of your nerves! And do you think you can hang ten like a wave-taming pro, fearlessly riding 136,383 litres of pounding water? Welcome to the FlowRider® surf simulator! Feel like bumping up family fun a few dozen notches? Try go-karts at SeaPlex® – the largest indoor activity space to ever set sail – for zig-zaggy, wheel-spinning excitement you won’t get enough of!

From the daunting 10-story Ultimate Abyss ℠ to ice-skating, ziplining, escape rooms, laser tag and rock climbing, Royal Caribbean has a full lineup of thrilling activities, most of which are included in your cruise from the UK. Check and see which can’t-miss first-at sea feats are available on your ship and make a plan to experience them all - as often as you like! After all, that’s part of the beauty of an all-inclusive cruise!

TAKE IN TOP ENTERTAINMENT

Mamma Mia Broadway Show Three Women Singing

When you book a Royal Caribbean cruise, you are signing up for some of the finest shows found at sea! Broadway blockbusters such as Grease and Mamma Mia. Dazzling original productions that seamlessly combine deck-defying acrobatics with innovative technology and mixed media. And some of the hottest visiting bands playing live concerts that’ll rock you well into the night.

You can also vibe with live music at many onboard lounges including Boleros, a Latin-themed club where a sizzling six-piece band will have you shaking your hips. If your European cruise takes place during balmy months, consider taking part in Family Movie Night on the pool deck, watching a first-run film under star-studded skies.

ENJOY AGE-APPROPRIATE CHILL TIME

Couple Entering the Pool at the Solarium

Even in the tightest-knit families individual members can occasionally use a little alone time, pursuing their own age-appropriate activities before coming together again. For Mum and Dad that might mean a tranquil afternoon sipping something fruity at the Solarium – an adults-only pool with breathtaking ocean views – followed by a romantic dinner for two. Fortunately, the award-winning Adventure Ocean ® Youth Program offers multiple programs for young adventurers and is included for kids ages 3-12 (fee applies for Adventure Ocean® Babies and Late Night Party).

Rest easy knowing that your little cruisers, under the care of staff with degrees in education or recreation, are enjoying puzzles, games, science projects and more, as you and your spouse experience quality “us time.” It’s a win-win and yet another reason why an all-inclusive cruise is such a budget-stretching value – no babysitting hassles or fees!

VISIT EPIC DESTINATIONS ONBOARD STUNNING SHIPS

Odyssey of the Seas Greece Daytime

When you book a European cruise on Royal Caribbean, your voyage takes you to some of the planet’s most iconic ports – and those carefully planned itineraries, many spanning several countries, are part of your fare. Cruise from Southampton onboard Anthem of the Seas ® to the sun-soaked beaches of the Canary Islands, then on to Lisbon – named one of the world’s top cities – before dropping anchor in Vigo, Spain, a can’t-miss seafood mecca.

Or head north, following in the wake of Vikings to Iceland and Ireland or even to the towering fjords of Norway… With cruises from Israel to Spain, and Greece to the Arctic Circle, and with such home ports as Barcelona, Rome and Haifa, Royal Caribbean offers European itineraries to satisfy every wanderlust.

Equally importantly, you travel with the most recognised cruise line, selected year after year by Travel Weekly readers as the Best Overall! Guest-favourite ships – such as Odyssey of the Seas℠ , Symphony of the Seas , Anthem of the Seas , Enchantment of the Seas , and Explorer of the Seas – will serve as your amazing home base. Floating cities full of unforgettable experiences, they are part and parcel of what makes a Royal Caribbean all-inclusive cruise both a great value and a next-level adventure!

My 7 Favorite Cruises In And Around Europe

W hat I love most about cruising around Europe is the huge choice in types of cruises you can go on. Because Europe includes hot and sunny destinations like Spain and Italy, and cold and interesting places like Scandinavia and Scotland, you can take a very different cruise each time around Europe. You can pull up in pretty ports in Greece and swim from the boat and you can sail around the shores of Scotland and take a cold water plunge — if you’re brave enough.

The coastlines of Europe are vastly different to one another and the types of cruises you can take are too. River cruises, yachts, island cruises, and large fun-packed cruise lines all sail around these shores. Plus, you can start your cruise in Europe and sail off beyond the continent, and then return after an adventure.

Here are my 7 favorite cruises in and around Europe.

1. Starclippers

Rome round trip .

This seven-night cruise begins and ends in Rome, visiting Lipari, Sicily, Amalfi, Sorrento, and Ponza. What I love about the Starclipper cruises is they are informal and casual — you dine with other guests or by yourself, you don’t have a set table for meals, and you can wear what you like as there’s no dress code. But at the same time, the interior of the ship and the cabins are sophisticated and semi luxurious, so it feels casual and chic all in one go.

This particular cruise is on the Starflyer , which has two pools and a sun deck. There’s no entertainment on board, though there might be some games in the evening, but children are welcome over the age of 6 months. I love these small-yacht ships that can get you into ports the larger cruise ships can’t, and this one is a beautiful ship with an atmosphere of relaxation and easygoingness. You can even join with the crew and help to sail the ship if you like.

2. French Waterways

Hotel barge prospérité: côte d’or.

If you like things really intimate, you can book a six- or eight-person cruise with French Waterways and have the barge to yourselves. This one is a canal cruise in France, but they also offer river cruises. The rooms on the barge are hotel standard and there’s a sun deck and a hot tub on board. The cruise ambles along the canals in the Côte d’Or, stopping off for a walking tour in Dijon, shopping and markets, and wine tasting at a vineyard.

This is a really relaxing way to cruise in France with family or friends, but you can’t book onto this cruise as a single person or a couple. This is a chartered barge that is priced for the maximum number of people it sleeps — six or eight. If you’re experienced, you can also choose to pilot the boat yourself.

3. G Adventures

Sailing from split to dubrovnik.

Sailing along the Dalmatian Coast is a unique experience and visiting Croatia is a trip full of historical sites and exploration. The yachts you’ll travel on with G Adventures give you a truly small-boat experience. If you want a luxurious cabin and lush interiors, this isn’t for you, but if you want a sense of adventure and an authentic sailing experience, this is definitely it.

The yacht accommodates a maximum of eight people, but you don’t have to be a part of the group, you can book onto this as a single person or couple. Note: If you book a solo trip, you will be sharing your cabin with someone else. It’s also worth noting that you’ll need a medium level of physical fitness to take part in the activities on this tour, which can include kayaking and hiking.

This is a self-catering trip, and while there’s plenty of opportunities to eat at the destinations, there aren’t any meals offered on board. This also means that when you eat your own food on the ship and/or cook for yourself in the kitchen, you are expected to tidy up after.

4. Hebridean Adventures

Hebridean island odyssey.

Sailing on board the MV Hjalmar Bjørge with the Northern Light Cruising Company, Hebridean Adventures brings you a trip like no other around the Hebrides Islands in Scotland. This nine-night cruise stops at Mull, Coll & Tiree, the Small Isles, and the Isle of Skye. Most people who take this cruise are wildlife enthusiasts and are sailing with the hope of spotting dolphins, puffins, eagles, and more. But even if you only have a passing interest in wildlife, this is a stunning way to get a bit closer to it.

Facilities are limited on board and the cabins are no-frills, with some only including bunk beds. You do have to share bathroom facilities, which is a challenge for some people, but guests are all aware of this and are very considerate. The onboard chef is a real plus on this cruise and they cater for any dietary requirements, cooking all meals fresh every day. The boat might be basic, but the scenery is breathtaking and it’s a unique type of cruise.

5. Celebrity Cruises

Egypt & israel.

Beginning in Athens, Greece, this 10-night cruise with Celebrity Cruises will stop off at Israel and Egypt before returning to Athens. There are 3 days at sea on this cruise, and on board the Celebrity Infinity , there’s a casino, an art gallery, a sun deck, indoor and outdoor pool areas, a spa, tennis, nightlife, and restaurants and bars.

This is a large cruise ship experience with capacity for 2,170 people. Rooms are hotel standard, some with verandas, and the experience of being on the ship is as much a part of the trip as exploring the stop-off destinations. The cruise gives you the perfect mix between Europe and a little further afield. For anyone who hasn’t strayed beyond Europe before, it’s a great way to get a taste of Egypt and Israel.

6. Variety Cruises

Italy & malta.

Beginning in Naples and sailing along the coast of Italy and around its islands, this small boat intimate cruise with Variety Cruises ends on the 8th day in Malta. At first, I thought it was unusual to end in a totally different place than where the cruise began, but actually, I loved the chance to get to know somewhere separate from the starting point.

The ship has capacity for 44 people and is a laid-back experience with just a sundeck, informal restaurant, bar, and swim platform. Most of your time is spent off the boat, exploring parts of Italy tourists don’t usually visit, and that’s the real draw with these small-boat cruises. These are ports large cruise ships can’t enter, so you feel like you’re on a voyage of discovery. Rooms are comfortable and pleasantly decorated and designed, but you won’t be spending much time in them. The Italian islands and Malta are beautiful places to explore.

7. Princess Cruises

Grand 11-day mediterranean.

This big cruise ship experience with Princess Cruises begins in Rome and travels to Greece, Turkey, Sicily, and Mallorca, ending in Barcelona, Spain. Aboard the Sun Princess ship, it’s all about fun on a large scale, with climbing walls, swimming pools, a spa, bars, cafés, restaurants, evening entertainment, and kids clubs.

It is aimed at families and there’s lots for all ages to do, but it’s also a great cruise to take as a couple or by yourself. There’s something going on all the time, but you can still find some quiet time on the sun deck. There’s 3 days at sea on this 11-day cruise and you’ll certainly never get bored. I love the stop-offs and visits to four different countries, with some really diverse excursions offered at every stop.

See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

  • Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
  • The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
  • Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

Insider Today

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

european cruise options

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

european cruise options

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

european cruise options

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

european cruise options

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

european cruise options

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

european cruise options

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

european cruise options

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

european cruise options

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

european cruise options

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

european cruise options

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

european cruise options

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

european cruise options

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .
