5 best family cycling holidays in Europe

In this article we share our pick of the best family cycling holidays in Europe; the kind that allow both kids and adults to relax, ride their bikes and explore somewhere new. If you love active family holidays, then this type of break should be perfect for you.

(But be prepared for the fact that a family cycling holiday/bike tour will likely be an entirely different ball game to the sort of cycling holidays you were used to without kids!)

This guide to the five best places to take family bike tours in Europe will, hopefully, inspire you to book your first – or next – family cycling break. From the sweeping salt marshes of Ile de Ré or the sparkling shores of Lake Constance to the Greenways near Girona, a loop of the Loire or discovering the Danube Cycle Path, these suggested routes are ideal for adults and kids alike.

Read on and plan your perfect family cycling holiday in Europe!

For further inspiration, don’t miss our articles on the best UK family cycling holidays and how to plan a family cycling holiday.

In the interests of complete transparency, we haven’t cycled all of the routes in this article ourselves. We owuld love to though! If you have ridden any of these, let us know in the comments below!

Ile de Ré, France

Suggested route: The network of bike paths west from Saint Martin de Ré

Great for: Sea and salt marshes

Ile de Ré is a gorgeous island, situated just off the west coast of France and conveniently criss-crossed by a network of cycle paths. Abundant in casual charm, the island is particularly popular with holidaying Parisians.

With salt marshes and many miles of shoreline, the unique landscapes of Ile de Ré are a real draw. The island is ideal for anyone who wants to take a family cycling holiday in Europe, as there are plenty of traffic-free cycle paths. The fact that the landscape is fairly flat also makes it a suitable choice for children.

So what does Ile de Ré have to offer? Think unique boutiques, beautiful French villages and a top-notch food scene. Inland you’ll also find woodland, vineyards and meadows. There’s also around 100 kilometres of family-friendly cycling routes to help you discover it. Even at the highest elevation of the island you’re less than 20 metres above sea level.

Perfect for a first family cycling holiday in France?!

We certainly adored spending time on the Ile de Ré as a family. The only thing to be aware of is that the Ile de Ré is not undiscovered – you won’t be alone on the bike paths (remember those Parisians?!)! We’d suggest getting your family ride in early; before 9 am each day you’ll often find you have the paths all to yourselves. But even if you prefer a later start, it’s no problem, there’ll just be more people out and about.

The whole island has nice bike paths suitable for an easy cycling holiday, but we particularly liked the area west of Saint Martin de Ré. Cycle routes around Ars en Ré, Loix and Les Portes en Ré will take you on a magical journey between the salt marshes and the sea.

More information

A final tip: if you’re driving to the Ile de Ré from the UK, consider an overnight stop in Nantes. A trip to les Machines de l’île will be unforgettable for you and your kids.

La Flotte in Ile de Re, France

Loire, France

Suggested route: Tours to Tours loop

Great for: UNESCO World Heritage French chateaux

A classic option for family cycling holidays in France is a trip to the Loire region. This area is home to the La Loire à Vélo, an 800 kilometre route passing through the Garden of France and the Valley of the Kings. The route connects the heart of France to the Atlantic, and is also part of the Eurovélo 6 route, which stretches for some 3,600 kilometres.

Of course we’re not suggesting that you cover the whole 800 kilometres during your family break in the Loire!

We know from experience that easy cycling holidays in Europe are what you need when you have kids in tow. Fortunately, it’s possible to experience the fine French cuisine, rolling vineyards, unspoiled villages and towns, fertile farmland and untamed rivers without covering hundreds of kilometres.

The route we suggest is a loop that starts and ends in Tours with a midpoint in Amboise. This allows you to follow the impressive cycle paths that trace the banks of the Cher, the Indre and the Vienne as well as the mighty Loire.

A roll call of UNESCO-listed chateaux also awaits. Highlights include the castles at Amboise,  Azay-le-Rideau, Chenonceau, Langeais and Villandry. You can also drop into the cellar doors en route so that adults can sample a drop or two of the local vintages, and visit the troglodyte caves at Souzay-Champigny and Turquant.

Danube, Austria

Suggested route:  Danube Cycle Path from Linz to Vienna

Great for:  Family attractions, history, food and nature

Family cycling holidays in Austria are another option for active sorts who love to explore. The Danube Cycle Path is the main draw here, as adults and kids alike can discover the area away from vehicles and at their leisure. The entire Danube Cycle Path encompasses eight European nations in all (albeit you might not want to do all eight at once when you’ve got the kids with you!).

Some say that this spacious cycle path is in fact underused, which is interesting given it’s also one of the better known cycle routes of Europe. There’s a reason for its reputation; it’s idyllic, and also ideal for family biking vacations.

There are lots of segments you could ride along the Danube, but for family cycling tours a great option is between Linz and Vienna. This takes you to Enns, the oldest city in Austria and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Wachau in the Danube Valley before ending in romantic Vienna.

This riverside route is flat throughout, making it the perfect choice for a family cycling trip through Austria. The destinations en route allow the whole family to experience a Roman circular route tracing the former border of an ancient civilisation, visit a waterpark, delve into Celtic history at the Heuneburg hillfort in Hundersingen, sample Sachertorte, ride the famous giant ferris wheel in Vienna – and much more.

Take a look at the Danube Cycle Path site . The Salzkammergut region is also worth a look and we have other articles about cycling in Austria, here.

Via Verdes near Girona, Spain

Suggested route:  Via Verdes (AKA Greenways)

Great for:  Peaceful off-road riding and beautiful countryside

The Girona region on Spain’s Costa Brava has serious cycling pedigree. The now-notorious Lance Armstrong used to train here, numerous prominent cyclists are based in the Girona area and David Millar has a residence here.

So with such an illustrious roll call of famous cycling names, is Girona suitable for easy family cycling holidays in Spain?

You bet. It’s easy to reach from the UK and Europe, offers plenty of bike-friendly places to stay for all budgets and offers peaceful, well-maintained roads and cycle routes.

If you’re with family and prefer to avoid being on the road, check out the Via Verdes for your cycling holiday in Spain. Though many of the popular cycling routes around the Girona area involve high elevations, the Via Verdes comprise around 125 kilometres of cycle paths created from now-defunct railway lines.

Sample the highlights by taking a ride from Llagostera to Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where there’s a smart marina and a curving, sandy bay. This route is around 20 kilometres (or 12.5 miles) long. It forms part of the Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols segment.

The other sectors are Ripoli to Olot, Olot to Girona and Palamós to Palafrugell. If you do decide to embark on the Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols segment, then do take some time to explore the city first. Park de la Devesa in the city centre is lovely, and well-shaded too thanks to the presence of over 2,500 plane trees.

Find out more in our guide to cycling in Girona on the Costa Brava . Our article on Girona’s easy cycle routes might also be useful.

Cycling on the Via Verdes near Olot

Lake Constance, Germany

Suggested route: The Lake Constance Cycle Path

Great for:  Summer swims and intriguing islands

Lake Constance is so big that it’s bordered by three European countries. You can travel along its shores in Austria or Switzerland, but we recommend heading to Germany for the best family biking experience. You just cannot beat family cycling holidays in Germany spent by the water, especially in summer when taking a cooling dip will hopefully be in order.

The Lake Constance Cycle Path traces the entire 260 kilometres (or 160 miles) around the edge of the water. Dotted with lidos for summer swims, the kids shouldn’t complain too much about getting hot and sweaty as there will soon be a lido to jump into!

The Lake Constance Cycle Path is very well maintained, and is suitable even for absolute beginners. It’s also well signposted, so you shouldn’t have any trouble in working out where you’re headed.

The best bits of the German sector include Mainau island, a 45-acre plot covered in flowers on Lake Constance. There’s also a butterfly house and a baroque palace here. Reichenau Island with its Benedictine monastery, Meersburg Castle and Lindau with its lighthouse and harbour are further highlights.

If Germany isn’t enough, you could add spots like Bregenz in Austria and Stein am Rhein in Switzerland to your itinerary. Visiting these – as well as stunning Alpine views – would make for a beautiful, if packed, week-long family cycling vacation.

Head over to the official German tourist board website for more on cycling Lake Constance

10 of the best: family cycling holidays in Europe

Vondelpark, Amsterdam

1/10 Amsterdam South, Holland

Amsterdam has 513km of dedicated cycle paths and several bike-only bridges with around 10,000 bicycles parked around Amsterdam Central Station each day. A great half-day ride into the leafy suburbs leads through the lesser-known Amsterdam Zuid district, visiting the stately Apollolaan area and the verdant public space of Vondelpark. Pick up an illustrated guide to the self-guided route from the Amsterdam Tourist Office and allow 2.5 hours to explore.

More info:  Holland.com

Bruges, Belgium

2/10 Bruges, Belgium

While WWI cycle routes are proving popular for families with older children this year given the centenary commemoration, the 29km daytrip around Bruges makes for a faourite shorter option. The Bruges trail starts from the central station and leads out to the charming West Flanders town of Damme, following the canal along a flat, well-signposted route. After lunch in a Damme café, head back into historic Bruges for a Belgian beer.

More info:  VisitFlanders.co.uk

Somerset, England

3/10 Somerset, England

Yorkshire may be grabbing the cycling headlines this summer with Le Grand Depart of the Tour de France but there are plenty of shorter family routes around England. One of the most atmospheric is the traffic-free Strawberry Line along the old railway route from Clevedon to Cranmore. With a series of spurs around the village of Cheddar, it’s an easy-going eight miles with plenty to visit along the way, notably Glastonbury Tor, Wells Cathedral and the Cheddar Caves.

River Danube, Austria

4/10  River Danube, Austria

For older children (secondary school-age onwards) Austria’s Danube Cycle Path may be an ambitious 225km but it cuts a delightfully scenic swathe through the bucolic backroads of rural Austria. Leading from Linz to Vienna, the traffic-free trail hugs the River Danube’s banks via the historic hilltop town of Wallsee, the Habsburg town of Grein and wine-growing region of Wachau. Book a package to transfer luggage ahead each and count on cycling 25km per day.

Bornholm, Denmark

5/10 Bornholm, Denmark

Copenhagen may be one of Europe’s most cycle-friendly cities but smart Scandinavians escape each summer to the Baltic island of Bornholm – about 30 minutes from Copenhagen airport, or a ferry ride from Sweden. The island is ideal for chilled-out cycling with a craggy coastline, white-sand beaches and mystic rock formations to explore. The entire coastal loop is 105km.

Tenerife

6/10 Tenerife, Spain

Tour de France cycling hero Bradley Wiggins trained on the island of Tenerife but there are plenty of more leisurely trails for families. The north of the island has several routes with the Puerto de La Cruz loop great for all ages. It leads from Martianez beach to the Botanic Gardens with stops for refreshments en route. More adventurous is the trail through the Corona Forestal Natural Park and the hills around La Esperanza.

Brittany, France

7/10 Brittany, France

For children starting to learn French at school, a leisurely summer saunter through the beautiful Breton countryside is a great introduction. Follow the scenic canal towpaths of the Nantes-Brest canal from St Brieuc – three hours by TGV from Paris. You can dip in and out of 20km sections along the route each day (especially if you send bags ahead), taking time to linger around the chateau in Josselin, or the marketplace in Pontivy.

More info:  BrittanyTourism.com

Venetia, Italy

8/10 Venetia, Italy

For a gentle introduction to la dolce vita, a self-guided trip around the Venetian countryside combines circular cycling routes and back-to-nature lifestyle with a chance to stay at a family-run agriturismo (farm-hotel). Combine a leisurely day excursion criss-crossing the valley floor on quiet country lanes with days off to visit regional highlights, such as nearby Venice, Vicenza and Padua. Great short rides for younger children include the 5km circular cycle around Lake Fimon and the village of Costozza with its network of caves set amongst vineyards.

More info:  Love Italy

Mecklenburg

9/10 Meckleburg Lakeland, Germany

With more than 70,000 km of cycle trails and 200 long-distance cycle routes, Germany has cycling for all ages. Riverside routes are particularly popular with both the 230km Ruhr Valley Cycle Route from Winterberg to Duisburg, and the 640km Mecklenburg Lakes Cycle Route from Lüneburg

to Wolgast boasting water-based activities along the way. The latter is particularly scenic with sections through the Mecklenburg Lake District and Müritz National Park. Dip in then transfer ahead before finishing at a Baltic beach resort.

More info:  Germany Travel

10/10 graubünden, switzerland.

The Alpine ski resort of Flims takes on a new life each summer as a cycling haven. It’s home to a mountain-biking centre with over 330km of waymarked trails for all levels, plus a rope-swinging centre in the forest. One of the best trails for primary-school-age children is the Flims Round Trip (route 245) from Laax Staderas via refreshments in Conn, which runs 11.2km through the forest and boats view of the Upper Rhine gorge. Finish with a dip in nearby Lake Cauma.

5 Great European Bike Tours for Families

family bike tours in europe

family bike tours in europe

Sightseeing in Europe can get tiresome for kids, but add the excitement of bicycling from place to place and the camaraderie of traveling with others, and suddenly even your teenagers will be eagerly getting up early in the morning to join each day’s programs.

Cultural immersion and history naturally come with the territory on these slow-travel journeys. The organizers carefully curate the best of their destinations, letting parents off the hook when it comes to planning and managing logistics. Most trips have multiple guides, so while one guide is racing the kids up a hill for a gelato, another might be stopping for an aperitif with the parents. And while most of the guided trips are pretty flexible and freewheeling, there are also self-guided options for families who want the logistical support of a tour, minus the schedules.

We think the best family bike trips are big on off-road and tranquil backroad routes, kid-oriented learning activities, and family friendly accommodations, with a pool, beach or space to run around. With that in mind, here, in no particular order, are five of our favorites:

family bike tours in europe

1. Ciclismo Classico’s “Fun in the Sardinian Sun” – Sardinia, Italy The combination of beaches, cultural immersion and historic sites dating back to the heydays of the Phoenician and Roman civilizations make the seven-day “Fun in the Sardinian Sun” itinerary from Italian bike tour pioneer Ciclismo Classico ideal for families. No worries if you’re not avid cyclists — there’s a choice of routes with varying mileage on most days, and a “sag wagon” to hop into for an air-conditioned boost up a big hill or a break.

Sardinia is one of Italy’s off-the-beaten-path treasures. The second largest island in the Mediterranean, unspoiled Sardinia is home to four million sheep and well under two million people. The trip takes full advantage of its rocky, cove-scalloped coastline and long stretches of pristine sandy beaches.

Among the highlights are a kid-oriented visit to the Phoenician museum, stops to swim and snorkel in pristine coves, and boat and canoe trips. You’ll also visit small fishing villages and learn about the “mattanza,” a traditional communal method of fishing for giant bluefin tuna during their annual spring migration.

Unlike most bike tours, which change hotels almost every night, Ciclismo Classico family trips try to minimize the moves to avoid the stress of packing everyone’s luggage every morning. This also makes opting out of a ride easy if someone isn’t interested, and makes the trip welcoming to non-cyclist travelers. The Sardinia route sets up loop rides from two lovely hotels, one with a pool and the second, a resort situated along a lovely white sand beach.

A Ciclismo Classico hallmark is its emphasis on cultural immersion, which includes gentle language lessons along the way. So don’t be surprised when your kids say “arrivederci” as they depart from Sardinia.

3. Butterfield & Robinson’s “Normandy Family Biking Tour” – Normandy, France From Viking settlements and the Battle of Hastings in 1066 to the D-Day landing during World War II, Normandy is filled with history for families to discover together. But it’s the enticing separate activities — the afternoons that kids (suggested ages of eight and up) spend horseback riding, racing quads and sand-surfing on the beach, while their parents enjoy leisurely afternoons of cycling, sightseeing and kicking back to sip Calvados — that really set the five-day Normandy Family Biking tour from Butterfield & Robinson apart.

With more than 300 miles of dedicated bike paths and long stretches of flat terrain, Normandy seems made for cycling. D-Day gets a lot of attention on this tour, as it should. A visit to the compact Invasion Museum at Arromanches introduces families to the geography, challenges and strategies. Together, families deepen their understanding by visiting Omaha Beach, Pointe du Hoc, the American cemetery and other sites, and on the last evening, have the chance to dine with a member of the French Resistance.

Other shared experiences include biking through the lush Norman countryside to a private chateau for a grand country lunch, complete with two local specialties, cider and Calvados, and a bike ride through the wetlands of Vernier, known for its thatched roof cottages, to Honfleur, where impressionists Claude Monet and Eugene Louis Boudin found inspiration. Another family experience is the high ropes tree-climbing course, where kids usually outclimb their parents.

The caviar of bike tour operators (with prices to match), Butterfield & Robinson, accommodates cycling families at Le Normandy Barriere of Deauville, a historic grand dame hotel with a lovely indoor pool, and at the new Villa Lara, a boutique design hotel in vibrant heart of the medieval Norman town of Bayeux, with spectacular views of the 11th century Cathedral, and just steps from the lively bistros and quaint shops that line its narrow pedestrian-only streets.

family bike tours in europe

4. ExperiencePlus’ “Costa Brava” – Catalonia, Spain Costa Brava means “rugged coast” and this varied itinerary from ExperiencePlus! combines coastal rides with treks inland to walled medieval hill towns. Delights include beaches, castles and the dramatically beautiful, gnarly stretch of rocky coast that inspired artists such as Savador Dali, Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso. Rated for intermediate beginners, the terrain is generally gently rolling or relatively flat with a few challenging climbs that can be easily shuttled past.

In this corner of Spain, modern crafts people and artists work in centuries-old walled cities, and new resorts sit side-by-side with traditional fishing villages. The trip starts in Girona, a vibrant, ancient city known for its cuisine, street festival ambience and well-preserved pedestrian-only Old Town.

Cycling highlights include the Vias Verdes, a rails-to-trails route from Girona to the Mediterranean Sea, a boardwalk trail along the beach, the scenic Cap De Creus and Dali’s summer home in Cadaques. The journey ends in Figueres, Dali’s birthplace and home to the world-famous Dali Museum. While ExperiencePlus! doesn’t arrange kid-specific activities, its strong cultural focus draws kids in, and accommodations, all either on a beach or with pool, include several two-night stays.

ExperiencePlus! cyclists never feel pressure to keep up with the group. And they don’t need to look at maps, either. That’s because every morning, the guides “chalk out” the day’s route on the roads, drawing distinctive white arrows at every turn. The popular white-chalk navigation system has special appeal to older teens — and adults — who love being able to ride independently without consulting directions or worrying about staying on course.

The Best Family Cycling Holidays in Europe

Matt A - Headshot

Looking for the best family cycling holidays in Europe? These tours all feature gentle terrain, well-maintained cycle paths, short daily distances and plenty of attractions to keep kids, parents and grandparents happy.

We've carefully chosen routes that follow dedicated cycle paths or quiet roads and take you through some of the most delightful cycling locations in Europe. Our team have cycled six of these destinations themselves and so can personally recommend them!

If you have very young children, you'll find tours that take you over almost entirely flat terrain with short daily distances. For older children or teenagers who are up for more of a challenge, there are hillier, longer routes for them too.

If you see a tour that takes your fancy then call our team on +44 (0)1273 224066 or enquire online and set yourself up for a fabulous family cycle. Or for even more choice, take a look at our entire selection of family cycling holidays .

Family Lake Constance Bike Tour

Follow a trail of excellently maintained cycle paths alongside the murmuring shores of Europe's largest freshwater lake on our Family Lake Constance Bike Tour . Not only will you be pedalling on cycle paths away from the roads for most of the way, but the cycling is almost entirely flat with short daily distances, ideal if you have small travelling companions.

James cycling by the shores of Lake Constance

Plus, if you're hearing the odd 'are we there yet' from the back of your peloton, you'll find plenty to keep the kids entertained away from the cycle paths. Break up your hours in the saddle and stop off for ice cream, let your children play in the many parks and playgrounds or splash about in the lake. You can also take a cable car trip up to a wildlife park, enjoy a day at the Ravensburger Theme Park and visit the Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen - all included in the tour price!

Freedom Treks' Catherine and Saul took their 7-year-old son James on this tour last July for his first cycling trip on his own bike. Find out why Catherine thinks that Lake Constance is perfect for families .

Bike Hire Options for Children

Freedom Trekkers say:

"What a truly fantastic family holiday... We are a family of 5 with 3 boys (13, 11 & 9) and had never done anything like this before. In no way are we cyclists but we loved every minute. It was great to head out each morning on a new mini adventure knowing we were going somewhere we'd never been. Even though the trip is self-guided we barely took a wrong turn. This meant we felt really safe which is a huge thing when you have children." -  David Rollin

Bolzano to lake garda leisurely bike tour.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that cycling through the Alps is for experienced and hardy cyclists only. Not so! Our Bolzano to Lake Garda Leisurely Bike Tour takes you along flat valley floors beneath towering peaks through the gorgeous South Tyrol region of Italy. You'll travel short distances along cycle paths (unusual for Italy), making this tour an ideal choice for your first foray into cycling abroad with the family.

There are plenty of attractions for kids to stay excited about along the way too. Take a short detour to Caldaro where children can climb in the Kaltern Adventure Park in beautiful wooded surroundings, visit the awesome Castel Beseno and reward their efforts with some of the free gelato available on this tour!

  • FollowMe bike

"A very good tour in a beautiful region, perfect for families. Very nice scenery (mountains, vineyards and apple orchards, pretty villages etc. with a very scenic arrival at Lake Garda) and moderate cycling (25-40km per day) suitable for children. On the first two days there is an option to take a longer, less flat route (very scenic), which I recommend warmly."  -  Tanguy Morel

Loire valley leisurely bike tour.

Introduce the children to the beauty of the French countryside as you cycle through the 'garden of France' on our Loire Valley Leisurely Bike Tour . Forget the stress of dealing with traffic as you pedal along cycleways and quiet roads and simply enjoy cycling through vineyards in gloriously quiet surroundings.

A bike outside Château de Chambord

Let your children's imaginations run wild as you hop between spectacular châteaux that seem like they are taken from the pages of a fairytale. And if you don't think your youngsters have the legs for a week-long cycle, the route has a couple of days with looped rides, so feel free to take these as rest days. You'll also have the pleasure of staying in 3* and 4* hotels where children can splash about in the swimming pools, and if that’s not enough, children aged 3 to 11 receive 50% off the holiday price.

"The chateaux that you cycle past on this trip are absolutely stunning and certainly worth stopping to explore."  -  Ian Griffiths

Moselle cycle path leisurely bike tour.

Germany  is a particularly good country for family cycling because of its vast network of cycle paths - over 70,000 km of well-signposted routes! One of our favourite routes in the whole country is our Moselle Cycle Path Leisurely Bike Tour where you'll enjoy gentle riverside cycling along the quiet banks of the Moselle River between Trier and Koblenz.

A family cycles the Moselle cycle path © Dominik Ketz

This is a great location to create fond memories as a family, with plenty of places to stop by the banks of the river for a picnic and swim in one of the many lidos. There are also plenty of activities to keep kids entertained along the way including water parks, mini-golf and a forest adventure trail.

Freedom Treks' Catherine, Saul and their son James also went on this tour in 2020 and loved it. One of the revelations for Catherine was the FollowMe bike that their then 5-year-old James used. Catherine loved the security of being able to choose between letting James cycle on his own and attaching him to her or Saul's back wheel.

  • Child trailer (suitable for 1-2 children)
  • Child tag-along (with 20" or 24" wheels)

"This trip was absolutely fantastic for a family of four including two teenagers! Easy cycling on most days, lots of things to do on the way, and lots of delicious food and wine to taste! Freedom Treks was the best holiday company I have ever used."  -  Sophie Grice

Umbria leisurely assisi to spoleto bike tour.

Our Umbria Leisurely Assisi to Spoleto Bike Tour takes you through the green heart of Italy on quiet country lanes and cycle paths and along valley floors with stunning views. This tour is as much about the stays as it is about the cycling, as you unwind in the evenings by the pools of quiet rural retreats surrounded by classic Umbrian countryside.

Casco Dell'Acqua, Umbria

This tour offers something for both parents and kids - after days in the saddle exploring old hilltop towns, looking at frescoes and visiting Romanesque churches, kids can let off steam by having a good splash about.

  • Kids bike (up to 12 years old)
  • Tag-along bike

"The bike guide was the best we have ever had! The accommodation was stunning. The cycling route was easy with so much to enjoy on the route. The food and coffee was superb. Just do it!!" -  Amanda Barton

Bolzano to venice bike tour.

We've told you about our Bolzano to Lake Garda Leisurely Bike Tour, now go a step further with our Bolzano to Venice Bike Tour . This pleasant route will lead you beyond the stunning blue waters of Lake Garda towards the famous canals of Venice. With longer distances to cycle every day, this tour is great for older children with a little more energy in their legs.

Venice with Santa Maria della Salute from above

Despite the distance, the cycling is still blissfully flat and cooling off with a swim in Lake Garda's clear waters makes a welcome halfway treat. The difficulty level of this tour is flexible too. If your kids are up for a challenge, take them on a more undulating route via Caldaro Lake. If the daily cycles become a bit too much, it's easy to skip a stage with a picturesque journey in a cool train carriage.

"The cycle route from Bolzano to Venice was a terrific experience. The best part was the first half with stunning mountain scenery and the Lake Garda ferry trip was the highlight."  -  Karen Chapman

Danube - leisurely passau to vienna bike tour.

Take your family on one of the great European bike trails on our Danube - Leisurely Passau to Vienna Bike Tour . Known as 'the classic', the route between Passau and Vienna is a long-established bike trail that typifies Danube cycling at its best. You'll cycle along quiet green riverbanks and pass through stunning areas of natural beauty such as the Danube Loop and the Wachau wine region.

A family cycling on the Danube

This is a great route if you're travelling with children. Well-sign-posted, flat and traffic-free cycle paths allow you to relax in the saddle and turn your gaze to the beauty of the Austrian countryside. The train journey to Vienna on the last day of your tour will shorten an otherwise lengthy route and give those legs a well-earned rest.

"This was a fab holiday for a family with teenage boys and not particularly fit parents... The leisurely trip down the Danube is great for those who like to sightsee and not spend too much time in the saddle." -  Nicola Bees

Lake constance bike tour.

Stein am Rhein, Lake Constance

In truth, the terrain on our Lake Constance Bike Tour is no more challenging than our Family Lake Constance Bike Tour. The route is traversed along well-maintained and quiet cycle routes but you'll probably find that the longer daily distances are better suited to older children.

  • Child Bike (with 20", 24" or 26" wheels)

"Lake Konstanz is a beautiful cycling area. It is ideal for adults or families with teenagers... As a cyclist, you feel quite safe as it is mostly cycle paths and most of the roads have cycle lanes. The locals were very friendly and the drivers always courteous." -  Annmarie Ryan

Family sardinia bike tour.

Combine family cycling with a picture-postcard Meditteranean beach holiday on our Family Sardinia Bike Tour . This week-long tour takes you along pristine beaches with idyllic turquoise waters and even to offshore islands via ferry. The cycling itself is mostly gentle, but with a few gentle inclines and roads to navigate, this route is better suited to families with older children and teenagers.

The coast of South West Sardinia

To reduce time spent packing and unpacking, you'll spend a couple of nights in most locations so you have a lot of flexibility when it comes to deciding what to do with your days. You can either cycle inland to visit historic towns and olive groves or pack your holiday with plenty of rest days and sunbathe on the beach while your children splash about in the waves.

"Sardinia holiday was excellent; people, food, exotic beaches and interesting archaeology - loved the capital Cagliari and museums. The sun shone every day despite being October and the final hotel was superb."  -  Melanie Mcbreen

Frequent questions, can i bring my own bike.

Of course! You can enjoy each tour on your own bike or you can rent one. However, we do recommend renting a bike, because not all bikes have the same parts, so we can only guarantee the best mechanical assistance when you hire directly from us.

What kind of assistance will I have during the trip?

You will always have an emergency phone number you can call. On self-guided trips, you will need to be able to make your own minor repairs, such as replacing an inner tube in the event of a puncture, or fixing a slipped chain, but you can always count on assistance on site for more serious damage.

How can I know if a tour matches my level of ability?

We rank our tours on a scale of 1 to 5, based on the length, elevation changes and complexity of the itinerary, but if you have any doubts then please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help you find the trip that is right for you.

Food was excellent, and mileage was sufficient and cyclist could ride more miles at the end of each day if desired. Very good crew who went out of their way to keep us happy and lovely travel companions. Great sights on the bikes and the bikes themselves very good. The boat is very comfortable and the rooms very small ( which we were forewarned). Our guide made sure there were many options both day and night to see extra. I was disappointed she lost people on 2 days, particularly as someone was hurt on one of those days. The food was very good with variety each night. I think everyone was pleased with the trip

HASSLE-FREE

Handpicked experiences, expert crew, trusted by many, unbeatable support, things to know.

Helmets are mandatory for all cyclists in Turkey , and Croatia , and for minors in several other European countries. While not obligatory elsewhere, we recommend bringing your own for safety. Helmets are available for rent on our tours.

You’re welcome to bring your own bicycle on most tours. Please confirm space availability on your chosen vessel in advance. Note that we are not liable for any loss or damage to personal bicycles. If you don’t have your bicycle, you can rent it on our tours.

A moderate level of fitness is recommended to enjoy the tours, which typically involve 40-60 kilometers of cycling daily, averaging around 5 hours of riding.

Our tours are designed to immerse you in the experience, hence a support vehicle is not part of the journey. Participants are encouraged to complete the daily cycling stages with their fellow cyclists.

To ensure the integrity of our rental bikes and your safety, we do not allow personal pedals to be attached to them.

While our routes are planned for full-day adventures, certain tours may offer the flexibility to return to the ship earlier, subject to the ship’s docking capabilities.

The adventure each day can span from 30 to 60 kilometers, with the time spent cycling influenced by your pace and the number of stops to soak in the scenery.

Our guides converse fluently in Dutch, English, and German, with some also proficient in French or Italian. Briefings are conducted in English and sometimes in German.

The number of companions on your journey will vary, with smaller ships often at full capacity and larger vessels typically filled to 80-90%.

Accommodations range from cozy standard cabins to luxurious superior suites, with each ship offering its unique array of options.

Stay connected with Wi-Fi available across all our vessels, with specifics outlined in our Travel Preparation guide.

To maintain the serene ambiance of our ships, laundry services are not offered on board.

Some ships equip cabins with hairdryers, while others can provide them upon request.

Our ships maintain a smoke-free environment in cabins and indoor public areas, with designated smoking zones available on deck on most vessels.

To ensure the comfort of all our guests, pets are not permitted on board, with the exception of crew members’ dogs that are familiar with life at sea.

Seasickness is uncommon due to the stability of our vessels and the typically calm waters on our routes.

Parking solutions are tailored to each departure point, with options like P+R facilities and valet services detailed in your pre-travel boarding information.

You will receive comprehensive travel details to your ship’s location upon booking, including information on parking and available transfer services.

Our guests are generally between the ages of 45 and 65, bringing a wealth of life experiences to share.

Our tours attract a global audience, from the far reaches of Scandinavia to the southern tips of Africa, and from the Americas to Asia.

Packing light is key, as cabin space is optimized for comfort and not for large luggage.

Our tour leaders are equipped to assist with minor issues, and in case of emergencies, the local emergency number 112 should be contacted.

For your safety, helmets are available for rent on most tours, and are included with our Premium tour packages.

You are welcome to enjoy the amenities on board instead of cycling. Please inform the tour leader or crew of your plans.

Our tours proceed rain or shine, with your safety as our top priority. You have the freedom to cycle or remain on board, based on your comfort with the weather conditions.

Weather conditions can vary from country to country and from season to season, so we suggest preparing for everything from rain to bright sunshine. For a detailed forecast, AccuWeather is a reliable source.

Not always. We suggest you bring your own equipment if you plan to snorkel.

Life-saving boats and life jackets are available on all ships and can be found in marked wardrobes on the deck, in the salon, or under the beds in cabins. In case you cannot swim, it is important to inform the crew and the captain. While on the ship, it is essential to pay attention to the following safety measures:

The stairs on the vessels can be steep and narrow, so it’s important to be careful while going up or down. The decks can also be very slippery, especially in wet conditions, so passengers should use caution and hold onto the railings when walking around the vessel.

Climbing the foremast, jumping off the deck during the cruise, or going too far from the vessel during swim pauses are strictly prohibited.

In the busy high season, harbors can become congested, and vessels may have to dock beside each other, so it is essential to exercise caution when moving between them. Crew members are available to assist passengers who require help. However, the cruise is not recommended for those with limited mobility or in wheelchairs.

The length of the cycling routes planned for each day is an estimate and takes into account local conditions and possible detours or shortcuts. The sailing and cycling routes may be adjusted depending on weather conditions and the abilities of the cyclists on board. Typically, departures are in the morning, usually after breakfast.

Bringing and consuming your own beverages on the vessel is prohibited. Instead, you can order drinks from the vessel’s salon, which serves as a restaurant, living room, and bar. The bar offers a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. If you would like a drink that is unavailable at the time, please inform the crew, and they will do their best to arrange it for you at the next port of call.

The flexibility and breadth of UTracks’ program of active family holidays ensures that there is a European holiday for nearly every family. If you are testing the waters, Bike & Boat tours offer a fantastic introduction to our style of travel because you only have to unpack once.

Staying in the same accommodation throughout your trip is a huge bonus for parents, minimising the stress and hassle of packing and unpacking every day. The familiarity of returning to the same place is also reassuring to kids who are new to travelling.

Vehicle-free cycling trails are common in Europe. On many self guided cycling tours, bike trailers can be arranged for children as young as two years with a maximum weight of 40-60kgs (depending on specifications). Trail-a-bikes are available for 4-9 year olds.

Most Barge & Bike holidays provide a discount of up to 50% for kids travelling with 2 adults. Our Danube boat-based cycling trips, for example, are ideal for children as the route is generally flat and perfect for taking in the many castles and monuments that overlook the river. Whatever your specific requirements and interests are, we are bound to have the perfect boat-based family tour for you.

Family friendly: seven European destinations with a difference

European cities are traditionally the travel trend for couples, but they make the perfect playground for children too

Family travel in Europe is enormously rewarding, and the sheer breadth of experiences on offer is pretty much inexhaustible. It’s often the places that might not seem like obvious family destinations that will surprise you the most: from Unesco-listed old towns and iconic historical sites to fantastic areas for family hiking and cycling, fairytale castles and palaces that evoke a genuine sense of wonder, and beautiful beaches, there’s plenty to discover. Here are some of the best places to enjoy a family holiday in Europe that you might not have thought of yet.

Vienna verve

Few countries do family travel like Austria – whether it’s a fairytale-themed hiking trail in the mountains, a supremely family-friendly museum, or simply the impeccable hospitality. The Austrian capital Vienna is one of the most dazzlingly culture-rich cities on Earth, and is also a fantastic place to spend time as a family. Along with some of the world’s greatest art collections, kids will love the Schönbrunn Zoo (the world’s oldest zoo) with its giant pandas. There’s Vienna’s mind-bending House of Illusions, and the excellent, immersive Haus der Musik, as well as the Children’s Museum in the Schönbrunn Palace, the Natural History Museum and Museum of Science & Technology. Take a Danube cruise or spend a day cycling in the stunning Unesco-listed Wachau valley (home to Austria’s finest Grüner Veltliner, parents will be pleased to know), or visit the world-famous spa town Baden bei Wien.

Where to stay Next door to the museum of technology and only a five-minute walk from Schönbrunn Palace’s imperial grandeur, Doubletree by Hilton Vienna Schönbrunn is perfectly placed for exploring the Austrian capital. And with interconnecting rooms, the hotel is well suited to families.

Picturesque Prague

Prague charms from above and below, with its castle and skyline bristling with medieval towers, cobbled streets and squares, and sculpture-encrusted bridges spanning the River Vltava. Along with must-see places such as the gothic masterpiece which is the Church of Our Lady before Týn, and the iconic Charles Bridge, make sure you check out the National Marionette Theatre, which is one of the best places to delve into Czechia’s spectacularly rich heritage of puppetry. South-east of the city, Aquapalace Praha is one of the largest aqua parks in central Europe, with 21 water slides (up to 250-metres long), or, for even more of an adrenaline rush, head for the Prosek bobsleigh track (children under the age of eight must be accompanied by an adult). You can even grab a high-speed train from Prague to our next destination, Dresden, to further your family adventure.

Where to stay The art deco-style Hilton Prague Old Town is just a few minutes’ walk from both the old town and the main railway station and is ideal for a stay with older children. It boasts a health club and spa and an indoor pool, as well as family rooms and suites. Meanwhile, Hilton Prague , on the banks of the River Vltava, also has a spa and indoor swimming pool, with six restaurants to choose from. Children are well catered for – under-10s can eat for free when accompanied by a paying adult at the Cafe & Bistro, on the hotel’s indoor terrace. There’s also the option of enjoying drinks at the Cloud 9 Sky Bar & Lounge rooftop bar, while taking in stunning views of the river.

Dreamy Dresden

On the banks of the Elbe, Dresden remains one of the most impressive cities in Germany, and along with all the magnificent architecture and history, there’s plenty to do here as a family. Don’t miss the Green Vault – the largest treasure collection in Europe – while no one can fail to be impressed by the soaring Frauenkirche. The Erich Kästner House for Literature celebrates the work of this beloved children’s author (best known for Emil and the Detectives), while the miniature steam railway in the Großer Garten will charm younger visitors. Dresden’s surroundings include some of Saxony’s finest vineyards, and the Elbe Cycle Path is a fantastic route for families – head north-west to Meissen’s historic porcelain factory, or east to the extraordinary landscape of Saxon Switzerland national park, with its breathtaking sandstone towers and easy walking trails.

Where to stay Right in the heart of the old city centre (Altstadt), Hilton Dresden is the perfect base for exploring this magnificent city and its surroundings. The hotel has a splendid coffee house, and a wellness offering including an indoor pool with sauna and an outdoor whirlpool. The junior duplex suite will be a hit with families, while the queen executive family room sleeps three.

Warsaw’s wonders

Poland’s capital city is an awe-inspiring mishmash of modern skyscrapers, gothic cathedrals and baroque palaces that will dazzle kids and adults of all ages. The city is dissected by the mighty Vistula River, whose banks are a veritable playground for children: think urban beaches bustling with volleyball games, boulevards brimming with promenades and restaurants, and boat tours so you see and experience it all. Away from the river, the city’s Be Happy museum is a powder-pink wonderland, filled with eminently Instagrammable unicorns, swings and other fantastical attractions that social-media savvy teens would kill to be snapped playing on. Or, for more retro family fun, head to Pinball Station, a museum of arcade games with more than 100 playable stations to while away the hours on.

Hilton Warsaw City :A breakfast buffet promises a no-stress start to your day, while the innovative “Le Petit Chef” dinner experience will provide you with family entertainment come evening. With menu selections catering to both adults and youngsters, and life-like animations projected straight to your table, the entire family is in for a delightful experience. Where to stay Just a 15-minute drive from Warsaw Chopin airport and featuring connecting rooms, Hilton Warsaw City is the ideal base for parents who want convenience and alone time, without being completely cut off from the little ones. A breakfast buffet promises a no-stress start to your day, while the innovative Le Petit Chef dinner experience provides family entertainment in the evening. Menu selections cater to adults and youngsters, and life-like animations are projected straight to your table. The hotel is also a champion of accessibility for disabilities both seen and unseen. As a member of the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme, if you live with a hidden disability you can rest assured that your Sunflower badge will be recognised immediately upon arrival. The hotel boasts a wide range of accessibility adjustments, from wider-than-standard doors and bathroom grab bars to braille elevators and visual alarms for people with hearing impairments.

Kid-tastic Kraków

The magnificent, Unesco-listed city of Kraków has masses of history and stacks of atmosphere, and there are plenty of things here that kids will absolutely love. Start with the vast main square, Rynek Główny (one of the largest medieval squares in Europe), visit the Wawel Royal Castle and cathedral, explore the old Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, and check out Mocak (one of Poland’s best contemporary art galleries). Perhaps most impressive of all, however – and a genuine show-stealer for kids – is the Unesco-listed Wieliczka salt mine, with a staggering 245km of galleries on multiple levels opening up to vast halls and chambers carved out of rock.

Where to stay Hotel Saski Kraków, Curio Collection by Hilton occupies a beautiful ornate building in the heart of the old town, just a block from the main square, and offers connecting rooms, an indoor pool, and a bespoke family experience for under-12s, including a dedicated kids’ breakfast experience. Near the Vistula River and the tethered hot air balloon (over-fours only), as well as walking distance to Kazimierz and the castle, Hilton Garden Inn Kraków is child-friendly with connecting rooms. The hotel is also handy for attractions such as the old town, and if you’re staying in, there’s a restaurant and bar as well as an evening room service and 24-hour shop.

Dutch delights

A family holiday in the Netherlands comes with world-class museums, big sandy beaches, and some of the best family cycling in Europe. Explore the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House and the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. Also, pencil in the Kunsthal artspace in Rotterdam and Escher in the Palace in the Hague. Take a boat tour on the canals, check out the breathtaking Tulip festival, and visit the enormous Beekse Bergen safari park. Travelling by train is a great way to see the Netherlands: you can start out in Amsterdam, jump on the train and be in the Hague in under an hour, finishing up in Rotterdam – another short trip by rail.

Where to stay The canalside Hilton Amsterdam is set in a quiet neighbourhood that’s still well-placed to explore the city. The hotel, site of John and Yoko’s famed bed-in peace protest in 1969, offers bike rental to help you get out and about. Or, if you fancy staying closer to home, dine at its Italian restaurant, Roberto’s. Surrounded by woodlands, DoubleTree by Hilton Royal Parc Soestduinen is close to charming Amersfoort as well as the Soestduinen Golf Club and Soester dunes. The hotel itself has an impressive indoor pool at the health club and spa. Hilton Rotterdam is right in the city centre, and is surrounded by bars and restaurants. It’s just 40 minutes by RET metro to the huge sandy beach at Hoek van Holland, with its local surf school. Hilton The Hague has a stunning Peruvian and Japanese restaurant, BlueBlood, with a centre-piece bar for cocktails. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the Royal Noordeinde Palace and the Peace Palace, and Scheveningen beach is just a short tram ride away. All of these hotels have family connecting rooms.

Charming Croatia

Croatia is a fabulous place to travel with kids, in particular the coast – think gorgeous beaches, a seemingly limitless number of islands to explore, hikes in the nearby mountains, national parks with masses of cascading waterfalls, and the chance to see dolphins from a ferry. You’ll also find exquisitely preserved medieval old towns. Dubrovnik was founded circa AD614 by coastal dwellers fleeing the barbarians – so there was plenty of activity before the incredible medieval walls were built (visit them in the morning before it gets too hot). Take a boat over to the island of Lokrum with its botanical garden, wandering peacocks and sandy beach, and enjoy a cable car ride up to Mount Srđ. A trip to Croatia also offers up wonderful food and some of the cleanest waters on the Adriatic.

Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik 2021

Where to stay On the outskirts of Rijeka, Hilton Rijeka Costabella Beach Resort & Spa is a lovely place to stay – stylish, spacious and luxurious, with indoor and outdoor pools, a Michelin-starred restaurant, kids’ club, a 200-metre pebble beach, and some of the finest views of the Kvarner gulf from your balcony. Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik has an excellent location just a five-minute walk from the 15th-century Pile gate. It has stacks of period charm, an indoor pool, and stunning views out across the Unesco-listed old town.
