Getting Down with Le Flex: A Review and Q&A

(Editor’s Note: Guest writer Andrew B. White’s latest piece for Vehlinggo  is a mixed review and interview centered on London-based Le Flex and his latest EP, Save Room for Dessert . Check it out.)

In late 2016 the album The Dancefloor Suite from London’s Le Flex caught my attention. A smoldering mix of 1980s-influenced UK smooth pop/funk and soul, the album channeled hints of George Michael, Imagination, and SAW (Stock Aitken & Waterman) with a sprinkling of house. It was certainly impressive stuff, as were the talents of Le Flex himself, single-handedly taking on all instrumentation and vocals on the album.

On Monday, reasonably quickly after the album, Le Flex released a brand new EP curiously titled Save Room For Dessert . Through his music and videos it’s apparent Le Flex has a sense of humor and the title for the EP is no exception.

The four-track EP opens with the late-night, edgy funk of “I’ll Never Find A Better Love” in the signature Le Flex style: great bassline, tasty keyboards, rhythmic guitars and of course those vocals.

“On The Weekend” introduces us to a more contemporary beat resulting in a fusion of old and new, and, to my mind, a little bit of Kruder & Dorfmeister’s K&D Sessions.

Le Flex certainly knows how to set set the scene for all the lovers (and wannabe lovers) out there. Not surprisingly then, “Lovers” swoons along a swelling ache.

The use of processed vocals here may not be to everyone’s taste, but like a lot of desserts, one man’s fruit cake is another’s crème brûlée.

“This Is Love” is quintessential Le Flex, lyrically and musically. Close your eyes while listing and you can picture Le Flex getting his mime on on Top Of the Pops circa 1988, with the cool kids, moms, and girlfriends all getting down together.

The EP closes with a reworked version of “When I Saw Your Face,” a short version of opener for  The Dancefloor Suite . Here, it gets fleshed-out into a full-length ballad, worthy of the late George Michael himself.

Save Room For Dessert is enjoyable escapism into the world of lovers rock, Le Flex style. It’s worth checking out. Also make sure to check out Le Flex’s You Tube channel for some entertaining videos documenting the creation of his music

A Q&A: Le Flex on George Michael, Album-Making

I was lucky enough to have a quick chat with Le Flex and here’s what he had to say.

ABW: The title of the EP, Save Room For Dessert —Do you consider the EP “dessert” to your recent album?

Le Flex: Yeah, that’s what it is really. It’s only five months since the album came out and i’m already putting out something else, but not enough for a full album again. Plus, I’ve experimented a little bit with a couple of different styles just because it’s what’s been coming out of me. I hope people will be into it, but if not then the next release has some guaranteed “normal” Le Flex stuff.

Also on this EP, I’ve included the full length version of my intro song “When I Saw Your Face,” from the album. I only ever intended that idea to be the intro for the album and then suddenly it kind of took on a life of it’s own and I started getting messages asking for a longer version. I only ever made it short as I didn’t think anyone would be interested in a ballad. I was wrong there!

ABW: To me, Le Flex channels George Michael. How did his passing affect you?

Le Flex: It’s unreal that so many people say that. I get loads of comments from fans on my videos, etc., mentioning George Michael and it’s really quite strange.

Vocally speaking, I don’t deserve to shine his shoes, so it’s hard to see the comparison personally. He was the best male vocalist ever in my opinion — Richard Marx and Peter Cetera are next — and I’m constantly finding something new about his stuff that I love.

He is a massive influence on me and his music was never off the stereo when I was growing up. I got a pop-up news notification on my phone that he’d died, and I remember reading it like three times and not registering properly in my mind. A really surreal feeling.

ABW: What’s next for Le Flex — another album? Collaborations? Live shows?

Le Flex: Well, in the past year or so I’ve hit a massive vein of creativity, and songs are just pouring out of me. I’m in two minds whether to just put out an album every six months or whether to keep them back in case I suddenly hit a block and can’t write anymore — haha.

I’ll either put another album out in summer or at the very least another EP and then go from there. What I’d really love to do is go on tour and play some live shows. I’ve got all the gear ready, but haven’t made a start on setting anything up yet. I suppose I should get a booking agent.

I’ve had a couple of collaborations in the works, but I’ve cancelled them all because they weren’t sounding like I wanted. So at the moment there’s none, but maybe in the future I might entertain the idea again.

Shakira has a big announcement!

The 47-year-old singer hit the stage for a surprise performance with Bizarrap at the 2024 Coachella Music and Arts Festival on Friday (April 12) in Indio, Calif.

Shakira and Bizarrap played their hit songs “La Fuerte” and “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53″ during the set.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” artist also surprised the audience with a major announcement!

While onstage, Shakira shared that she will be going on tour beginning in late 2024!

“Finally we’re going on tour — starting here, in November!” she exclaimed. “Starting here, this November, in this city! Can’t wait!”

The announcement comes on the heels of Shakira ‘s new album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran , which she released on March 22.

It’s her 12th studio album and first since 2017′s El Dorado . In 2018, Shakira went on her El Dorado Tour for the aforementioned album.

Ricky Martin appears to get an erection on stage at Madonna concert

The performer was apparently very excited to join Madonna in Miami for her "Celebration" tour.

Ricky Martin appeared to be super excited by Madonna 's dancers shaking their bon-bons all up on him.

Madonna welcomed the 52-year-old on stage during a performance of "Vogue" at Sunday night's Celebration tour stop in Miami — and, judging by fan-captured videos from the concert shared online , Martin seemingly grew aroused by the dancers' sensual grinding in front of him.

Another video Martin shared to social media also appeared to show his alleged arousal during the moment. Shortly after taking the stage, Martin sat in one of two silver chairs to help Madonna judge the ballroom portion of the show, which typically sees the singer-songwriter's dancers strut down a runway to receive scores from which Madonna and a rotating roster of celebrity guest judges.

"Thank you @Madonna my love! Always fun to be invited to the party!" Martin tweeted alongside the video. "You all, CAN’T MISS THIS SHOW!"

Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for Martin for comment.

Martin revealed earlier this year on an episode of Live With Kelly and Mark that he first met Madonna in 1999 following his performance at the Grammys, and the pair have remained friends ever since.

Other celebrities who've joined Madonna for the "Vogue" portion of the show include Julia Garner — who was initially hired to play Madonna in the star's delayed , self-directed biopic — RuPaul's Drag Race stars Sapphira Cristál , Plane Jane , Symone , and Monét X Change , and David Harbour , who starred in Madonna's 2011 directorial effort W.E.

21 Savage Officially Granted Permanent American Residency

21 Savage ‘s four-year immigration battle has finally come to a successful end with the artist being officially granted permanent residency status in the United States.

Savage’s lawyer, Charles Kuck, told The Associated Press that his client has officially become a permanent U.S. resident and may now go overseas, emphasizing the point that the artist had followed “all applicable immigration laws since his initial detention by ICE.”

21, whose real name is Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, age 30, was taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Georgia (where he had grown up most of his life) back in 2019. His visa, which his mother had acquired for him when he was 7 years old, had apparently expired back in 2006. At the time of his arrest, he claimed to be unaware that he had overstayed his visa. He spent 10 days in jail before he was released with limitations- mainly the limitation that he could not leave the United States as long as his case was pending. His case was delayed due to additional criminal charges as well.

However, since ICE granted him the ability to travel within the country, the “Rich Flex” singer had been able to tour, most notably accompanying Drake on his “It was All a Blur” tour. After being granted permanent American residency on Friday, 21 Savage joined Drake to perform in Drake’s hometown of Toronto shortly before announcing that he would be returning to his home country of England for a performance.

While going through the immigration process, 21 had become a vocal advocate about allowing people who were brought to the United States as children to become citizens as adults, namely those within the Hispanic community who like him, had mostly only ever known a life in the United States.

Aerosmith announces new dates for 2024 farewell tour 'Peace Out,' headed to Nashville

A erosmith has announced the rescheduled 2024 dates for their farewell 'Peace Out Tour.' The tour, which was originally set to come to Nashville in January 2024, was postponed due to singer Steven Tyler's vocal cord damage.

The band will now hit the stage at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Sunday, Oct. 20.

Rock legends Aerosmith—comprised of Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford—are known for hits "Dream On," "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" and "Walk This Way."

The band has released 15 studio albums, with their most recent released in 2012, "Music From Another Dimension!"

Aerosmith has announced that The Black Crowes, comprised of brothers Chris and Rich Robinson , will accompany them on tour. The Black Crowes released their first album in 15 years, "Happiness Bastards," on March 14.

Why did Aerosmith postpone their final tour?

Aerosmith first announced that they would be embarking on their final tour via video in May 2023. The tour began on Sept. 3 in Philadelphia.

The band, though, was forced to cancel remaining tour dates after frontman Steven Tyler suffered an injury at their performance on Sept. 9 in at the UBS Arena in New York.

Tyler suffered a vocal injury that included a fractured larynx and vocal cord damage.

In a Sept. 29 statement on Facebook , the band promised to honor tickets for new dates. “I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world,” Tyler said.

“I promise we will be back as soon as we can!”

Now, the rescheduled farewell tour will start back up on Sept. 20 in Pennsylvania, celebrating Aerosmith's hits from over 50 years together as a band.

All previously purchased tickets will be honored for the rescheduled shows. Ticket-holders will receive more information via email.

Tickets for the newly announced shows, both rescheduled and added performances, will go on sale on Friday, April 12 at 10 a.m. CST at  ticketmaster.com .

Park Boram , a South Korean singer who has steadily built her career over the past decade, has unexpectedly died at the age of 30, according to her agency Xanadu Entertainment.

Boram has had success in her native Korea since first appearing as a contestant in 2010 on Mnet’s “Superstar K2,” where she finished in eighth place. She put out her debut single “Beautiful,” which hit No. 2 on Korea’s Circle Digital Chart in 2014. That song was a semi-autobiographical tune about the pressures to conform to beauty standards. 

She released her first EP “Celepretty” the following year, earning a second top 10 entry with the title track. Amid a string of one-off singles and collaborations with artists like Eric Nam and Park Kyung , she put out her second EP “Orange Moon” in 2017 and followed with soundtrack songs and standalone tracks. She most recently put out a pair of singles — “I Hope” and “I Miss You” — earlier this year. Boram was working on an album to coincide with her 10th anniversary as a recording musician this summer.

The singer later shared her satisfaction with NPR in 2016 , adding how her then-management supported her many changes ahead of the single release. “I think a lot of people, after listening to this song, were motivated to exercise more, lose weight and diet,” she told Elise Hu for the Weekend Edition Sunday show. “I think a big reason is because I put my story into it. Like, one banana, two eggs — eating just that, and you see the results in me, and that was motivating for people.”

Park released her first EP,  Celepretty , in April 2015, which included “Beautiful” and through its title track single also secured another top 10 hit.

Following “I Hope,” Park Boram released the single “I Miss You” on April 3 as part of a music cover project. It was previously shared that the star was working on an album celebrating her upcoming 10th anniversary for this summer.
