5 Incredible Outer Banks Wild Horse Tours

The Outer Banks is a vacation destination that’s truly one-of-a-kind when it comes to nature, wildlife, and history alike. The proof is most evident across Corolla and Currituck counties where you’re likely to see herds of Wild Spanish Mustangs roaming free. These wild horses are unique to this area, and many believe they were first brought to the region on Spanish ships as explorers came ashore in the 1500s. In these areas of the Outer Banks, wild horses have full permission to roam at will. You’ll see them grazing the shorelines, sea oats, and on the oak tree leaves too. Wild horses in Corolla are easy to identify thanks to their stockier build as compared to domesticated horses. The best time of year to view wild horses in the Outer Banks is mid-April through May but because human interaction with the horses isn’t permitted, the only way to get a close look safely and securely is to book a horse tour while you’re here.

Outer Banks Horse Tours

Outer Banks wild horses receive a lot of popularity, and one of the best ways to see them is by participating in a wild horse tour. Outer Banks horse tours take place in open-air safari-style vehicles, SUVs or Jeeps that cart you over the dunes and through the beach as you search to find those Colonial Spanish Mustangs frolicking in their natural habitat. Tours are led by knowledgeable guides who provide you with lots of information about the area’s history and heritage as well as historical facts about the Outer Banks wild horses and how they got here in the first place. Your guide will also point out various flora and fauna that inhabit the environment. If you’d prefer a break from the norm of jeep and safari tours, you can elect to look for the wild horses via a Segway that will roll you over different types of terrain. Mustangs were brought to the Outer Banks nearly 500 years ago and their descendants are still with us today, although this hardy, majestic breed is now highly endangered. Your Guide to the Best Outer Banks Wild Horse Tours

Their Local History

North Carolina’s wild horses are believed to be descendants of Spanish Mustangs who were brought to America in the 1500s. Historians can trace the colonial Spanish mustangs’ presence back 500 years! This makes them the earliest settlers of the Outer Banks, second only to the region’s Native American tribes. Many theories exist about why the horses dwell on North Carolina’s barrier islands. Some say they appeared after escaping a shipwreck off the coast. Others conclude that they remain as remnants of early colonial settlers’ livestock.

The proposed theories need more evidence to make a solid judgment on the origin of the horses. How they arrived remains a mystery. The elusive ancestry of Corolla’s wild horses  continues to draw curious visitors to the Outer Banks to learn more about them. The herd currently consists of about 100 beautiful stallions and mares that free-roam the sandy dunes.

Where the Wild Horses Can be Found

Beautiful, wild, and free, it’s easy to see why these powerful beasts have enchanted visitors for centuries. The herd is located north of Corolla on an 11-mile stretch of remote land between the Atlantic Ocean and The Currituck Sound. As well as offering breathtaking views, this secluded and natural area protects the horses from urban development. It is accessible by 4-wheel Drive, which begins at the end of Route 12 (around Milepost 12) in Corolla. For more great information about where to see Corolla Wild Horses, click here .

Outer Banks wild horse tours take visitors on an exhilarating 4-wheel drive beach safari out to the herd. Most tours take approximately two hours. There is no “best time of day” to see wild horses in Corolla, as your guide will know where to find them. For safety reasons, all visitors must always stay at least 50 feet away from the horses. The beach speed limit within 300 feet of other persons or animals is 15 mph.

What to Expect on an Outer Banks Wild Horse Tour

The guided Corolla horse tours allow for family fun with a little dash of local history sprinkled throughout. Equestrian experts guide you through the area in a four-wheel drive area and point out the daily routine of our local horses. The knowledgeable tour guides lead you miles off-road and teach you about the challenges the horses face in their environment and what you can do through the  Corolla Wild Horse Fund  to help.

It’s important to remember that you must always remain 50 feet away from the wild Spanish mustangs. Admire their beauty from a distance, allowing for both your and the horses’ safety. Their mystique captivates anyone who gets the chance to see them in the wild. Expect phenomenal photo opportunities and the experience of a lifetime!

How To See The Wild Horses Of The Outer Banks

While it is possible to find the Outer Banks wild horses on your own, the best bet for seeing them is to book a tour with a reputable guide operating out of Corolla. We have some suggestions, below.

Table of Contents

How to See the Wild Horses of Corolla

Before attempting to see the majestic NC wild horses, bear in mind that there are a few laws in place regarding your interaction with the wild animals:

  • Do not feed the wild horses
  • Do not pet the wild horses
  • Do not come within 50 feet of the horses
  • Do not bait or entice the horses

These laws are in place to protect the horses but they’re also for your safety. Although the horses are usually calm and peaceful, they are still wild animals and could get spooked and injure you or your family.

Keeping these guidelines in mind, it is possible to embark on a self-guided tour to spot the horses. You’ll need a car with 4-wheel drive. Many Outer Banks tourists get stuck in the sand each year attempting to spot the horses (getting towed out of the sand could be a little humiliating and cost a small fortune).

From Corolla, head North on NC 12. You’ll pass the Whalehead and Currituck Beach Lighthouse. Eventually, you’ll reach a point where the paved road ends. Use that four-wheel drive to head out onto the sand and continue heading north on the four-wheel drive beach. Most people report that you’ll need to drive about 6 miles before you start spotting horses.

The best way to see the magnificent wild horses of Corolla on your next Outer Banks is on one of several off-road tours.

Know Before You Go

If you don't have a 4-wheel drive vehicle, book one of the wild horse tours , below! You must have a 4-wheel drive vehicle as law enforcement will stop 2-wheel drive vehicles before leaving the paved road in Corolla. If you have your heart set on driving on the beach, you can rent Jeeps and other 4-wheel drive vehicles (you'll find better rates in Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk). Deflate your tires slightly before driving on the sand. You can inflate your tires on your return at air stations around Corolla (look for the signs). Pack your snacks and drinks there are no food service options once you leave the road. Other good stuff to know…

  • The speed limit on the beach is 35, unless…
  • You are within 300 feet of another person, then the speed limit is 15
  • Fill up the gas tank! There are no gas stations after you leave the pavement
  • Beach parking passes (see below) are limited to 300 per week
  • Stay up-to-date on beach travel rules and recommendations from Currituck County

IMPORTANT : You must have a Currituck County permit to park on the beach! It's a lot of fun and lots of people do it, but you must have a permit. If you are renting a house in the 4-wheel drive area, ask for your beach parking pass (each rental unit has 2 passes from the county). Everyone else must purchase a  Currituck County Beach Parking pass for $50 (updated for the 2023 season). Passes are good for a week.

Origin of the Wild Horses of Corolla

Descended from the Spanish Mustangs, the Corolla wild horses were the first settlers of the Outer Banks. The horses have been residing along the North Carolina coastline for nearly 500 years. Meaning they were among the first residents of the area, second only to the Native Americans.

Although it’s not possible to trace the horses back to a specific origin, historians have used ship’s logs and journals to try to pinpoint a possible answer. Many believe that the horses came from early Spanish explorers.

There are two commonly accepted stories. The first story shares that the Spanish settlers were forced to abandon their ramshackle homes and livestock when fleeing from the local Native American tribes during attacks. The horses were left behind to roam the coast. In the second story, a Spanish boat attempting to conquer the new world started to sink. The boat was required to let go of extra cargo and the horses were released, forming their own herd in the Outer Banks.

At times, the horses roamed the length of the Outer Banks from Cape Lookout to Ocracoke Island and on to Corova. With the development of these lands and paved roads, the horses have been kept to a smaller area. Today, the beautiful horses roam freely along the dunes of Corolla. Part of what makes them appear so magical is their unknown origins.

Wild and free! Make the most of your beach vacation in Corolla, NC. The Outer Banks.

READY FOR AN ADVENTURE?

See the wild horses of the outer banks and whip through beach, dune, and forest trails with hummer adventure tours..

With the continued development of off-road trails, the horses were becoming harder to find in their natural habitat. When they were found, regulations prevented our tours from stopping and disembarking on public land and “roads” to take pictures.

Although by law we never get closer than 50 feet, we found that most customers do prefer to get out of the vehicle at points along the tour so they can be stationary while taking pictures.

To improve things, we purchased land in 2014. We can now venture into three distinct, previously inaccessible ecosystems that are teeming with wildlife of all types.

The new land provides an exciting ride through a maritime forest and high sand dune trails, with a view of protected marshlands. These areas are inaccessible by most off-road vehicles due to the soft, sugary sands and high inclines.

Only true off-road vehicles can make it without getting stuck, and in this area the Hummer really comes into its own.

NO PAVEMENT, NO PROBLEMS.

Awesome wild horse tour in a Hummer in comfortable carlike seats. Our tour guide Ned was great and very knowledgeable. We saw over 40 wild horses and 2 baby horses. Such a fun trip.

We had a fantastic tour with Wild Horse Adventures. Our sons, 10 and 13, were very entertained. The tour guide we had, Victor, was not only fun but very knowledgeable about the history and the horses. He answered all of our questions with ease. I highly recommend taking a tour with Wild Horses Adventure Tours.

We had such an incredible time on our tour! It was worth every penny. Stu was a fantastic tour guide and was very knowledgeable about the area, history of the horses, and the individual herds. We can’t recommend this enough!

We had an amazing tour today with “Just Tom”. He knows a lot about the history of the area, shared interesting facts, knew a lot about the horses, treated the horses with respect (very careful around them), and was a lot of fun to spend 2 hours with. The hummers were a great way to do it too. Obviously important too was that we were able to see about 30-50 horses of the 100 or so there (not guaranteed of course). We were able to get some great photos and learn a ton. Our 2 and 4 year old girls really enjoyed it too. We are considering going again this week. Thanks!

Probably my favorite adventure of our vacation! Mike was an excellent tour guide! I loved the stories he told us about the horses and the history of the area! Our tour was at 5:30 in the evening and was a great time to go! We saw so many horses!!! Even one of the new foals! So exciting! We didn’t want it to end!!!

Learning about the ponies, seeing them, and the experience of the ride across the sands and into their (and our) habitat. Most of all, the good stewardship that our guide expressed towards the land, the ponies, and the importance of conservation and care.

Absolutely AMAZING experience! Our tour guide Tom was so knowledgeable and was committed to helping us see the most horses possible (even the 3 day old baby!) Don’t miss out on this if you visit the Outer Banks!

We just got back from a week in Corolla. This tour was the highlight of our trip. Everyone from 9 to 75 enjoyed it. We booked the entire hummer for our party of 11. Tom was very informative and did a fabulous job! I totally recommend booking a trip with them the next time you are in the area.

A Brief History of the Corolla Wild Horses & How You Can Help Preserve Their Future

The Corolla Wild Horses have graced our beloved shores since the first Europeans landed in the 1500s. Arriving with the initial Spanish explorations in an area believed to be near present day Sandbridge, VA, they were "pushed off the boat" and then subsequently abandoned. Running into strong resistance from local natives, the explorers were forced to leave the barrier island in hasty retreat, leaving their livestock and horses behind. You can just imagine how hard it would have been to get these animals back onto their boat with arrows whizzing by their heads!

Traced though DNA research, the Corolla Wild Horses’ lineage has been determined to be from these original hardy Spanish Mustangs . Having remained largely undisturbed in this formerly remote location for the last 400 years, the herd was eventually threatened to almost extinction. As development in Corolla boomed during the 1980s and 90s, numbers fell to as low as 40 animals from rampant inbreeding, consumption of indigestible foods and being struck by vehicular traffic.

Fortunately, the herd was moved North beyond the paved roads from Corolla to Carova Beach in the Mid-90s, where numbers presently have risen to over 100 strong. But development once again is encroaching on these magnificent creatures, plus habitat closures from outdated Bureau of Land Management policy now threatens to restrict the herd to 60, thus causing more inbreeding.

Thanks to legislation suggested by students at Shawboro Elementary School in Currituck County, the Corolla Wild Horses were officially designated the "State Horse of North Carolina" in 2010. But there’s still much more work to be done to secure federal protection, preserving these "national treasures" in posterity. Please learn what you can do to join our ranks as a proud Supporter & Partner of concerned citizens overseeing the majestic herd at   Corolla Wild Horse Fund .

Here’s what others are saying:

“Highly Recommended!” This tour was one of the highlights of our trip to the Outer Banks in early May 2012. Jason, our guide, was friendly and informative. His wife, who was working in the office that day, answered our initial call for information. She patiently answered my questions. When we arrived at the office she greeted my wife and I with a smile. She was quite helpful. Back to Jason…. Jason is extremely knowledgable about the horses. He also shared interesting information about the people, the communities, and the beaches. Overall, it was an A+ experience from start to finish. Highly recommended. Chris C Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

“This is the best tour ever.” Dave our tour guide gave us all a history lesson on the Outer Banks. What a great time. We will be back to do another one. Johnny M Carlisle, Ohio

“We had a great time!” Our tour guide was knowledgable and friendly, and we saw several wild horses. We would highly recommend this tour if you love horses and the beach. MWyers

“Great Experience!” Definitely recommended for all ages! Everyone in the group (10 including 3, 2 year old boys) loved seeing all the horses not to mention a 1 week old foal! Our guide Wiley couldn’t have been better as he very knowledgeable of the area/horses and has a great sense of humor. Thanks to everyone at Corolla Wild Horse Tours for making our vacation to Duck that much better! Chad M Austin, Texas

“Walk away with a smile” This is our second year of going on the Wild Horse Adventure Tour . There was a group of 13 of us and we drove the jeeps following the guide. We had so much fun. The jeeps had much better suspensions and were easier to get into then last year’s, so you weren’t tossed around as much, but the terrain added to the fun. This year we even saw several groups of horses right at the water’s edge. Dillan was a fun guide as well. Sandra O Rochester, New York

“Teri & Eric / North Ridgeville, OH” We had so much fun on this tour and Jake was awesome as a tour guide. Not only did he manage to find the horses for us, but he also gave us some really helpful insight to several other things about the Peninsula and Carova. The idea that you could wake up in the morning or go out to get in your car after dusk and find wild horses grazing nearby is really neat. Thanks for a great tour! Teri B North Ridgeville, Ohio

“Excellent tour guide (Dave) would highly recommend!” Dave shared an excellent tour! He was very congenial and informative. Would recommend the tour and him as the guide to anyone! Thank you for the wonderful experience! Emily F. Wilmington, NC

Officially North Carolina's state horse, these mustang ponies are descended from equines brought here by Spanish explorers of the New World more than 500 years ago. Sun, Sand + Seclusion: 9 Top Outer Banks Beaches To Set Foot On!

A s an Australian who grew up on the beaches near Sydney, I can’t recommend beach life enough. And if you’re looking for a beach getaway to experience some sun, sand and seclusion, then one of the best places is on the Outer Banks beaches – only a 4-hour drive from Raleigh!

The Outer Banks are a barrier of islands that connect North Carolina to the Atlantic Ocean and are famous for being the first stretch of land to be settled by Sir Walter Raleigh.

Not only is this region an important destination for history, but it’s also an area of stunning natural beauty, composed of wild and expansive beaches, world-class fishing and surf spots, and many historic landmarks and attractions.

But the OBX beaches stretch for 136 miles long , connecting from the Northern border of North Carolina all the way down to the southern tip of Ocracoke Island, so you might be wondering which are the best Outer Banks beaches to visit on your next OBX vacation.

In this guide, we’re sharing the best beaches in Outer Banks that we’ve visited and personally recommend (in no particular order). We’ve been to the OBX in summer and winter, and a different experience can be had all year round. Plus, tips on where to eat and stay near each beach!

Best Outer Banks Beaches

Corolla beach.

Corolla Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the Outer Banks. It’s a long, 24-mile stretch that extends from the NC/Virginia State line to the town of Corolla and is known for its windswept, wild, and rugged landscape, with wild Spanish mustang horses grazing in by the shores.

It’s also known for having 4×4 sections, which tend to be more on the northern end of the beach and connect to Carova (more on that below).

Further to the south, you’ll find the beach becomes more open to the public and are lined with relaxed vacation homes and beachside cottages, as opposed to high-rise resorts. The south end of Corolla has more facilities such as lifeguards and dog-friendly sections.

One reason why Corolla Beach is one of our personal top beaches in OBX is because it’s a great beach for Stand-Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) – it has gentle waves and shallow shores, perfect for wading and paddling, especially if you’re new to SUP.

We’re big fans of paddleboarding, it’s one of our favorite activities to do in OBX , and are always on the lookout for places to take our two inflatable BodyGlove paddle boards .

You can also rent kayaks and paddle around the Currituck Sound, learn to kiteboard, hang glide, or take a fishing boat out to cast a line and see what you can catch!

  • Where to Stay: Check out these beach front vacation rentals in Corolla .
  • Where to Eat: We loved Lighthouse Bagels . They serve homemade bagels and donuts, as well as deli sandwiches and salads. Uncle Ike’s Sandbar & Grill for seafood, steaks and cocktails. And Corolla Village Barbecue .

Carova Beach

Carova Beach is the most northern beach in NC and connects to the Virginia border. It’s a part of the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge and about a 20-minute drive north of Corolla.

What makes this area unique is that it’s only accessible by 4WD , allowing visitors the chance to channel their sense of adventure and enjoy the solitude of remote life.

There are not many beaches in North Carolina where you can drive on the beach in a 4WD jeep buggy, but Carova Beach is one place where you can do just that.

Don’t lose yourself in the thrill of beach driving though, as you’ll want to stop and admire the famous wild horses who have been known to live on these beaches for centuries. Stop to watch them wading in the surf and snap a few photos – it’s one of the main reasons people visit Outer Banks. Don’t have a 4wd? Check out this 2 hour Wild Horse Tour .

The isolation and seclusion, paired with the colony of wild horses, make Carova Beach one of the most sought-after destinations in OBX. If you’re looking for a beach where you can escape the city life of Raleigh for a few days and close off from the world, this is THE place to be.

  • Where to Stay : Consider these oceanfront vacation rentals in Carova .
  • Where to Eat: Because Carova is only accessible by 4WD, you will need to venture to the nearest town of Corolla to eat as there isn’t much else besides vacation homes.

Nags Head Beach

Nags Head Beach is another popular OBX beach for those looking for a wild and rugged beach you can get lost in, but without too much isolation.

Nags Head is where most of the tourists go when visiting Outer Banks and has a ton of attractions and amenities that allow beach lovers to relax but without feeling cut off.

The beach itself is clean and has shower and restroom facilities. There’s a seasonal lifeguard who works in the summer months, and there are also plenty of free parking spots along the residential neighborhood behind the beach.

The sand slopes gradually into the ocean, which means young kids can paddle safely. All of this makes it one of the best beaches for families visiting OBX.

It’s also one of the best beaches for surfing in OBX. In fact, the ESA Surfing Competition takes place here over several dates in 2024!

If you prefer gentle waves for SUP or bodyboarding, there is a nice spot over by the pier, where the waves are a bit more sheltered – the rest of the beach is prime for surfers though.

  • Where to Stay: Choose one of these beachfront homes in Nags Head .
  • Where to Eat: Tortuga’s Lie was probably the best shrimp I’ve had in NC so far. And Fish Heads Bar & Grille on the OBX Fishing Pier is an experience you have to have. Fresh Fit Cafe for breakfast. Also, Mulligan’s Grille and Miller’s Waterfront Restaurant .

Kitty Hawk Beach

What attracts most people to Kitty Hawk Beach is the relative quietness and solitude. It has a skinny beach and features relatively skinny shorelines and soft golden sand.

It’s also known for the abundance of watersports opportunities you can do here because wind is a constant in Kitty Hawk. This creates bigger waves and optimal conditions for activities like kite surfing and windsurfing.

Kitty Hawk is also a popular place to try kite surfing and hang gliding from the sand dunes, which we loved doing when we visited – such a unique experience.

If you want to try hang gliding, we recommend Kitty Hawk Kites , who have been operating hang gliding lessons on this beach since 1974. They have qualified instructors and are suitable for all skill levels, from total beginner to advanced.

  • Where to Stay: Check out these popular vacation properties in Kitty Hawk .
  • Where to Eat: One of our favorite restaurants in Kitty Hawk is Art’s Place Bar & Grill , who have amazing hot pancakes! Another great place is Black Pelican which has oceanfront views, excellent seafood, and “dirty bird” drinks.  The Spot for acai bowls, and if you’re willing to drive 15-minutes to Duck, your kids will LOVE Donutz on a Stick .

Lifeguarded Beach, Ocracoke Island

Located at the Southern end of OBX on Ocracoke Island is Lifeguarded Beach, which has been famously declared as the “best beach in the United States” according to a 2022 report by Dr Beach .

How did this beach earn this title you ask? This is because it scored top marks in cleanliness of the sand and water, as well as beach safety.

Many of these beaches in OBX are wild and remote and lack some facilities to keep you safe, such as a lifeguard, but Lifeguarded Beach has all the amenities you could ask for.

Not only does it have lifeguards, allowing you to swim and surf knowing a trained life-saving professional has a watchful eye over the waters, but there are also restrooms in the parking lot, an outdoor shower, and the beach is well maintained and kept clean throughout the year.

Lifeguarded Beach is 12-miles long, extending from Ocracoke inlet to Hatteras inlet, and is well worth the ferry ride over from Hatteras or Swan Quarter.

  • Where to Stay: Consider one of these vacation rentals in Ocracoke .
  • Where to Eat: 1718 Brewing & the attached Plum Pointe Kitchen for great brews and food. Ocracoke Oyster Co for oysters and smoked ribs, and fresh seafood dishes. Eduardo’s Taco Stand for awesome breakfast burritos.  SmacNally’s Waterfront Bar & Grille for seafood on the water. Dajio for upmarket dining, and Ocracoke Coffee Co for your morning fix!

Kill Devil Hills Beach

Another great beach for surfing in the Outer Banks is Kill Devil Hills Beach, which like Kitty Hawk Beach, has larger waves and strong winds pretty much year-round.

It’s also an important site in aviation history. The Kill Devil’s Hill was the first place that The Wright Brothers took their first flight in the early 20th Century.

Don’t miss a sunrise over Kill Devil Hills Beach, it was one of our most memorable things to do in OBX when we visited as the scenes were simply stunning. Who knew the skies could make those colors?

  • Where to Stay: Check out these highly rated vacation properties .
  • Where to Eat: We love a good brewery, so we visited the Outer Banks Brewing Station for a meal and craft beer! It’s the first wind-powered brewery in America. Mama Kwan’s Tiki Bar is fantastic. Kill Devil Grill is a classic diner. And Awful Arthur’s Oyster Bar .

Avon Beach is a beautiful and not too uncrowded beach that’s like stepping into paradise. It was one of the quieter beaches in the Outer Banks when we visited, especially early in the morning (the best time to visit).

Walk along the beach at sunrise to the 600-foot-long Avon Pier, the first pier to be constructed on Hatteras Island, before grabbing your morning coffee from Uglie Mugs Coffee House .

The sand is clean and well looked after, and the shoreline slopes gradually, but families should note there are strong rip currents here so make sure your kids are confident swimmers before visiting here.

We enjoyed walking out on the 600-foot-long Avon Fishing Pier, the first pier on Hatteras Island. This is a great family-friendly beach where kids can run around with tons of space, play, and build sandcastles.

  • Where to Stay: See this list of popular vacation rentals in Avon .
  • Where to Eat: Uglie Mugs Coffee House does amazing coffee and baked goods, and they open at 7.00 am every day! The Froggy Dog for seafood a bar and a deck. And Oceanas Bistro is a casual roadside stop.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Beach

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Beach is a protected beach that’s famous for its rugged landscape and pristine sands. The beach itself is a great place to go camping, light a bonfire , or even take your 4WD out for a spin.

The beach extends for nearly 70-miles and has strong winds, which are perfect for flying a kite or going kite surfing.

Some visitors to Cape Hatteras National Seashore Beach have been lucky to witness turtles coming to shore in the evening to lay their eggs in the summer. The beach is a well-known nesting site for loggerhead turtles (and sometimes green turtles, leatherbacks, Kemp’s Ridleys, and Hawksbill Sea Turtles).

  • Where to Stay: Here is a list of popular vacation rentals .
  • Where to Eat: Watermen’s Bar & Grill is a great place to grab a crab cake sandwich and watch some live music from their outdoor deck. It’s also a great place to sit and watch the kite surfers out on the water.

Lighthouse Beach

Located in Buxton, Outer Banks, is another one of Dr. Beaches’ highly rated beaches. In 2023, he regarded Lighthouse Beach as the 5th best beach in the United States, due to its cleanliness and natural beauty.

Lighthouse Beach is the golden, sandy beach that sits below the old Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (not to be confused with Cape Hatteras National Seashores, which is 12.7 miles away).

This beach is not only visually stunning, with large offshore sandbanks and pristine sand, but it’s also all about the waves here. The waves are so unique because the sandbanks cause these shimmering wave reflections that are simply awe-inspiring to look at.

It’s considered one of the beach surfing spots on the Atlantic Coast because those sandbanks create a lot of wave energy, but even if you’re not into surfing you should walk along to Cape Point to see where the ocean is separated by a split and see waves coming from all directions.

It’s also lifeguarded, so you can swim and surf with that safety net. If you want to experience the beach uniquely, check out Lighthouse Horse Rides which offers horseback riding experiences on the beach.

  • Where to Stay: Consider these vacation rentals .
  • Where to Eat: Sandbar & Grille for classic seafood and deck views. Diamond Shoals Restaurant is a casual seafood eatery. And Cockeyed Clam Restaurant is popular for their scallops and crab cakes.
