Tour Description

  meet your guide: federica.

galleria borghese virtual tour

Hi I'm Federica! I have a degree in Art History from La Sapienza University in Rome, where my studies focused on the Italian Renaissance and its protagonists. A few months later I became a licensed tour guide, and I started working in the most important museums and archaeological areas in Rome. While working with people coming from all over the world, I realised that teaching art is a form of art itself, and that there are many cultural, anthropological, psychological and linguistic obstacles that prevent people from fully understanding what they see. I obtained a Masters degree in Art and Disabilities, which gave me the chance to learn more about the importance of ‘removing the obstacles’ and making culture accessible to everyone. As well as my work for Through Eternity I study sign language, and also teach Contemporary Art in a private academy for young students.

Rediscover the opulent lifestyle of a wealthy baroque prince

The fabulous palace and the peerless collection of painting and sculpture that make up Rome's Borghese Gallery was the brainchild of cardinal Scipione Borghese , one of 17th century Rome's most irrepressible characters. Learn how this man of the cloth was more interested in luxury than piety, and how his ruthlessly predatory nature combined with an unerring eye for artistic virtuosity allowed him to amass a private collection of art that has possibly never been matched before or since.

Join Federica to learn more about the colourful cardinal, whose lavish lifestlye scandalised contemporary Rome. Discover how Scipione's rapacious desire for artistic masterpieces was so great that he was known to have artists imprisoned to allow him to confiscate their works, and how he had Raphael's famous Deposition forcibly removed from its altar in Perugia and carted to his villa in Rome - where it still hangs in pride of place today.

Marvel at the virtuosity of Baroque master Gianlorenzo Bernini

At the heart of Federica’s tour is the towering presence of Barique master Gianlorenzo Bernini. Bernini would become the most famous sculptor of his generation and cast the urban langauge of Baroque Rome in his own image, but it was at Scipione's palatial suburban villa that the young artist first found fame.

Bernini's unique interpretation of ancient mythology and his revolutionary conception of three-dimensional space ushered in a completely new language of art, where the boundary between fiction and reality became fundamentally blurred. Bernini's theatrical sculptural fictions at the Villa Borghese launched the golden age of the Baroque, and you’ll learn all about them on our virtual tour.

Amongst the masterpieces that we'll be getting to grips with is Bernini's Apollo and Daphne  - Daphne, pursued by the ancient god of music , is caught in a moment of perpetually arrested transformation - no longer the beautiful woman she was but not yet the inert tree she would become, Bernini has managed to capture this fleeting moment of metamorphosis for all eternity in stone that seems to be pulsing with life.

The disturbing story of Pluto , dread god of the underworld, and the doomed young goddess Proserpina , meanwhile, is a dark tale of violence, lust and abduction - just the sort of thing to get Scipione's pulse racing. For Bernini the dramatic subject constituted a perfect excuse for him to show off his virtuosity - fingers miraculously seem to sink into flesh, and stony faces are as life-like and expressive as any photograph. Discover the full story on our immersive virtual tour!

Frederica presentation was terrific! Of all the pieces she could have covered she had selected my favorite: Bernini! She provided great context regarding the Borghese itself, the times, and the people but she concentrated the Bernini pieces and it was awesome!

Joyce - Mar 16, 2021

Federica is a fantastic guide. You can tell she truly loves what she does. This tour has a real focus on the Borghese Gallery construction, history, and development into an area to showcase masterpieces of art. There is a focus solely on Bernini's sculptures which are most certainly a reason to visit the gallery. I very much enjoyed my experience.

Ultimate Guide to the Galleria Borghese in Rome

elyssa profile

By Elyssa Bernard  and Alessandro Bisceglie

June 4, 2022

Are you wondering if you should visit the Galleria Borghese  when you come to Rome?

Find out why  this is one of Rome's must-see museums , and all the tips you need to know about visiting it, including how to avoid the crowds, whether you can take photos, and more!

Visiting the Galleria Borghese - everything you need to know

I've visited the Galleria Borghese countless times over the years and I see something new every time I go. Suffice to say I can never get enough!

This is one of the easiest museums in Rome to visit, thanks to a well-organized entry system, a beautiful location inside Rome's third-largest park, and a concentrated collection of paintings and sculpture by some of the most renowned artists in the world.

On this page, I'll share with you:

What is the Galleria Borghese museum?

  • Is the Galleria Borghese worth visiting?
  • What is there to see in the Borghese Gallery?
  • Where is the museum and what are the hours?
  • How much are Galleria Borghese tickets and what is the best way to purchase them?
  • Can you use your Roma Pass or other City Pass for free entry to the Borghese Gallery?
  • My top tips for getting the most out of visiting the Borghese Gallery, including avoiding crowds, taking photos, and more!
  • Where can you eat in or near the Galleria Borghese?

The Borghese Gallery is a relatively small museum in the Villa Borghese park at Piazzale del Museo Borghese, 5.

While it houses a spectacular collection of some of the world's most renowned artists from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, you will also find mosaics and sculptures from Ancient Rome, all in a stunning space surrounded by lush gardens.

For a more detailed history of the Galleria Borghese, jump down here .

Is it worth it to visit the Galleria Borghese?

bernini apollo and daphne

I live in Rome and still have not visited every single museum.

And yet, every museum I have visited has been "worth it." But that is, of course, subjective.

If I had to pick only one museum to visit on my trip to Rome , it would be this one.

Sacrilege you say?

Not the  Vatican Museums ? (If you follow me, you know I am mad about the Vatican Museums!)

Well, really, you should see them both (and the  Capitoline Museums !)

But if I had limited time, and I had to pick one museum, the  Borghese Gallery would win hands down . Here's why:

  • Easy to book, no waiting in line - It's easy to book tickets for this museum (although you MUST book in advance) and you won't have to wait in long lines to get in. The security line moves fairly quickly. No stress.
  • Art masterpieces from the Renaissance and Baroque  - The Galleria Borghese is home to a highly concentrated collection of masterpieces by some of the most talented artists of the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, including Raphael, Bernini, Botticelli, Caravaggio , and Rubens.
  • Ancient Roman art - Besides the above, you can enjoy unparalleled art from throughout Roman history. There are entire rooms with mosaics  from ancient Roman villas  showing  gladiators and their kills .
  • You can see the whole museum in 2 hours (or less) - You are only allotted a 2-hour window to visit the Galleria Borghese. While you could spend more time in there, you really can see most of the main halls and masterpieces in that time. No stress.
  • No crowds - It might sometimes feel crowded in a given room, like the Apollo and Daphne room, when everyone is in there at once. But only 360 people are allowed... Nothing like the  Vatican Museums  with its 30,000 visitors per day. No stress.
  • It's inside a beautiful park - Before or after your visit to the Galleria Borghese, you can enjoy the surrounding  Villa Borghese park , one of the prettiest in Rome.  Depending on the season , you may want to visit the gardens of the museum itself as well.

You may notice I wrote "no stress" 3 times above.

That is because it's one of the draws to visiting this museum.

A visit to the Galleria Borghese is wonderful, in part, because it's so doable.

You can see a LOT of amazing art in a relatively small space in a short window of time without the crushing crowds you find in some other museums in Rome (ahem.)

In short, yes, the Galleria Borghese is very much worth visiting. And in my opinion, it's worth spending the whole 2 hours and soaking up the beauty all around you.

Masterpieces to see in the Galleria Borghese

Thanks in part to art-lover Cardinal Scipione Borghese, t he Borghese Gallery is so full of amazing works of art by many world-class renowned artists, that it's impossible to list them here.

But to give you an idea of some of the wonderful sculpture and paintings you can see in the Galleria Borghese, here is a short preview:

A sculpture of Paolina Borghese by Antonio Canova that is worth the price of admission alone:

paolina borghese by canova

GianLorenzo Bernini

I am a sucker for pretty much anything Gianlorenzo Bernini has ever done.

Lucky for us, three of his most important sculptures are in this museum.

These include Apollo and Daphne , David , and The Rape of Proserpina.

closeup of apollo and daphne by bernini

There are many more works by him, including a self-portrait (painting), a fascinating sculpture of Aeneas fleeing Troy ( this is the beginning of the Rome foundation story !), and even a sculpture he didn't finish.

bust of cardinal scipione

Cardinal Scipione Borghese, founder of the museum, was a huge fan and patron of Bernini, so we can thank him for giving us this marvelous collection.

Michelangelo Merisi , otherwise known as Caravaggio , one of the most renowned artists of the Italian Baroque period, was a master of chiaroscuro , which means using very light colors against a dark background, for maximum effect and contrast.

He perfected this style and is considered one of the best and most well-known artists in using it to create a strong atmosphere in his paintings.

john the baptist by caravaggio

Masterpieces by Titian, Raphael, Rubens, and more

I really cannot do these works of art justice with my photographs, taken at angles, and the sun glaring on them.

(Photos are allowed, just no tripods and no flash. Get my photo tips here .)

sacred and profane by titian

But to give you an idea of the art you can find in this fabulous museum, you will find paintings by Rubens , Raphael , Guido Reni , Domenicchino , Parmigianino , Botticelli,  Correggio and so many more.

Many of these are on the top floor so don't skip that part!

villa borghese park in rome

So, where is the Villa Borghese located?

The  Villa Borghese park  is on the Pincian Hill above the Spanish Steps and Via Veneto.

The Villa Borghese is the third largest park in Rome, and  you can visit all the rest of it   without visiting the Galleria Borghese.

QUICK HISTORY OF THE VILLA BORGHESE

borghese gallery exterior

The Villa Borghese was the summer and party residence of the noble Borghese family, built in the early 1600's.

In 1605, Camillo Borghese became Pope Paul V, and his nephew, Scipione Borghese, soon was made a cardinal.

In 1606, Cardinal Scipione Borghese ordered a palazzo built.

The "Villa Borghese Pinciana", named for its proximity to the Porta Pinciana, was designed mostly by Flaminio Ponzio. The villa was completed in 1633.

Cardinal Scipione Borghese was a real art buff and at a very young age became one of Gian Lorenzo Bernini's biggest fans and patrons.

The Galleria Borghese was decorated and furnished mostly due to Cardinal Scipione Borghese's tastes and very strong will (some works were purchased and other donated, but some works were "confiscated." You can figure out what that means.)

In the 1800's, while Rome was under French rule, another Camillo Borghese, who was actually a prince, married into the Bonaparte family (his wife Paolina is the one seen reclining in Antonio Canova's spectacular sculpture, seen in the photo on this page.)

In 1807, Prince Borghese had to give about 500 pieces of art from this museum to Napolean Bonaparte, so if you want to see more of the original Borghese collection, you will have to visit the Louvre in Paris . (This is not a very happy subject for Romans today, as you can imagine!)

In 1902, the Borghese family sold the Villa Borghese and its contents to the Italian government.

What is the difference between the Galleria Borghese and the Villa Borghese?

In Italy, a "Villa" also refers to an estate, meaning a lot of land, so the  Villa Borghese park  refers to all the land, whereas the former  Villa Borghese Pinciana  refers to the building where the Galleria Borghese collection is housed today.

galleria borghese virtual tour

Booking the Borghese Museum via e-mail

You can also book the Galleria Borghese in Rome via e-mail.

Send an email to [email protected] .

Don't forget to include the number of people, their ages, dates you want to book, and your preferred time.

Also make sure to give them an easy way to reach you if the email you send from cannot be used.

When booking via e-mail, you'll receive confirmation within 48 hours.

If you have trouble with email, or don't get a response, then revert to the other ways of booking.

Booking your Galleria Borghese tickets online

If you go to the Borghese website  (Italian only) and click to book tickets, it will take you to their official ticket vendor affiliate in Italy, which is TicketOne.

Here is the booking page for the Galleria Borghese in Rome on  TicketOne  in English. (In case the page comes up in Italian, click the globe at the top.)

Browse to find available dates and then, once you select the date you want, you can choose from available time slots.

Once you are ready to pay, you will see there is a fee to use that vendor, which is an additional 2€ per person (on top of the 2€ booking fee that the museum itself charges.)

You will need to create a login name and password, but it's fairly straightforward.

Book online with an agency

I have heard more than one person tell me they find the Galleria Borghese ticketing website frustrating and/or difficult to use.

Do you just want to book your tickets via an English-language website and be done with it?

Here's an easy online booking calendar.

The tickets cost just a bit more than using TicketOne, but it's an agency and that includes the ease of use and your peace of mind.

DO YOU NEED TO BOOK galleria borghese TICKETS IN ADVANCE?

Consider that they only allow 360 people at once in the Borghese Gallery, with entry for up to 180 people every hour, on the hour, for a maximum 2-hour visit.

In high season , if you don't book in advance, you risk being turned away due to no availability.

You can try to visit the Borghese Gallery  in low season  without booking in advance, but as entry is limited to just 180 people at once, you risk not getting in or having to wait until there is an available time slot.

The Galleria Borghese is one of the things I most recommend booking in advance when planning your visit to Rome.

The perfect 3-day itinerary in Rome

Trying to figure out how to organize your visit to Rome? I've got the perfect 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors (or those who have not been here in a while.) It works for a 2.5 day visit as well.

In my 3-day itinerary, you'll see all the major must-see Rome attractions like the Vatican , Colosseum , Trevi Fountain , Pantheon , Piazza Navona , Spanish Steps , Castel Sant'Angelo , and much more.

And if you have more time, or want suggestions for extra/other things to do, you'll find that there too.

Visit my page with the best 3-day itinerary in Rome for first-timers .

How to Get the Most Out of Your Visit to the Galleria Borghese

How long will a visit take.

You are only allowed a  2-hour window  for your visit.

But you need to be there at least a half-hour before your entry time. The address is Piazzale del Museo Borghese, 5.

You may also spend a little time afterward visiting the small gift-shop, having a coffee or even a meal in the café there, or walking around the gardens.

Figure in time to get to the museum (this of course depends on where you are coming from, and how you will get there).

So all together, I'd say count on a good 3-4 hours out of your day.

Tours of the Borghese Gallery

Borghese gallery audio guides.

My top recommendation for a guide to this museum is to do their audio tour . You cannot book this in advance.  You just get it on the day you visit.

The audio tour is 6€, and is self-guided. It's really well-done and has good narrators telling interesting history about specific important (numbered) pieces throughout the Borghese Gallery .

There is no order, so you just go at your own pace and start where you want.

Docent tours of the Borghese Gallery

You may book a guided tour of the Galleria Borghese villa with one of their docents , for 8€ per person, in addition to the ticket price and booking fee.

You must reserve and pay for this when you book your tickets, either by phone or online.

You have the choice of a docent who speaks English or Italian, and sometimes, several other languages may also be available, including French, Spanish and German.

Taking a guided tour of the Galleria Borgese

Top tips for maximizing your visit to the Borghese Gallery

  • They say to arrive 30 minutes prior to your entry time. But actually,  you should get there 45 minutes beforehand . Consider that everyone is told they need to arrive half hour prior to their entry time. So it will be crowded right then. And you have things to do before you enter: pick up your tickets, check any items you are carrying, possibly arrange an audio or docent tour, have a coffee, use the restroom etc. So give yourself that extra time. Because at the end of your 2-hour visiting time slot, you will be OUT of the Borghese Gallery.
  • You will need to check anything you are carrying (purses, cameras, backpacks, camera cases, umbrellas but NOT coats or jackets.) This is free but there is always a line, although it moves pretty fast. Even really small bags need to be checked. A large camera case needs to be checked, but it's ok to go in with a camera around your neck. Don't worry, they will give you a little plastic baggy to put some change and your phone in. The ticket office and bag check is located outside of the main building, just to the left as you face it.
  • Speaking of cameras - you are allowed to take photos as long as you don't use flash or a tripod. And the photos must be for personal, not commercial use. Click here to read my top photo tips for Rome .
  • If you go at 17:00, you will finish at 19:00, and this is also the exact time they close the gift shop . So if you go at the end of the day, and think you might want to purchase anything in the gift shop, take time to visit the shop before your appointment, or try to leave some time at the end of your appointment, say 18:50, to get to the shop.
  • They only allow 90 people at once into the paintings galleries on the top floor, and in theory only for 30 minutes max. I recommend that when you arrive at the Borghese Gallery and are downstairs getting your tickets, checking your bags etc, that you STAY there, and go to the entrance in the way back, and go up on the top floor to begin your visit . In this way, you will start first in the paintings galleries, ensuring you will be able to visit them at a leisurely pace. Then, you can go down to the main floor when the other crowds are moving up to the paintings galleries.
  • Make sure to dress comfortably with sturdy walking shoes !
  • How to avoid the crowds (even if 360 people is not big a crowd?) Go at the first entrance or the last and there will only be 180 people inside. Or, visit Rome in low season !

No matter what season you visit Rome, here are 4 things never to leave at home:

Where to eat near the Galleria Borghese

Wondering where to have breakfast, lunch or dinner before or after your Borghese Gallery visit?

Besides the cafe inside the Galleria Borghese, here are two of my favorite spots to eat nearby.

One is inside the Villa Borghese park and the other is just outside it by a few blocks:

Outdoor dining at Pic Nic - That's Amir

outdoor dining in Borghese Park

This cute outdoor cafe is on Piazzale delle Canestre inside the Villa Borghese park.

It's about a 10-minute walk from the Borghese Gallery.

It's actually really good food, including the pasta and pizza !

He can speak three languages (that I know of) which is great! Before entering the Sistine Chapel, Francesco went over the paintings we would see. You're not allowed to take pictures in the Sistine Chapel so I really appreciated Francesco talking about how the paintings were made, who they were from, and how it got there. Francesco also highlighted important statues, tapestries, and paintings in the Vatican Museums. FYI you won't see everything, but just imagine seeing all 44,000 statues and paintings. Who Were The Borghese?

The Borghese family is a noble Italian family from Siena . They moved to Rome in the 16th century. Once in Rome, the Borghese family gained prominence and amassed great wealth.

The Borghese behind this glamorous gallery was Scipione Borghese. He was the pope’s nephew, a cardinal, and an avid art collector.

bust of Cardinal Scipione by Bernini, one of two in the museum

Scipione commissioned architect Flaminio Ponzio to build the Borghese Villa. Its sole purpose was to show off Scipione’s ever expanding collection of precious art. He wanted to create a “theater of the universe” to entertain VIPs.

But Scipione wasn’t your typical cardinal. Or perhaps he was.

Scipione was an unscrupulous and greedy sort. In his obsessive quest to build a preeminent collection, he used any tactic, however illegal, to acquire a masterpiece he coveted.

In 1608, Scipione hired thieves to steal a Raphael masterpiece, The Deposition , from a convent altar.

Scipione would confiscate art from people who hadn’t paid taxes. He’d jail artists on trumped up charges who refused to sell their paintings to him. The big bully would forcibly remove pieces from artists’ studios.

Botticelli, Madonna and Child, 1488, a painting at the Borghese Gallery in Rome

Scipione even blackmailed the great Baroque artist Caravaggio . The artist was desperate to return to Rome, after he was exiled because of a brawl and murder accusation.

Scipione could have pardoned him. Instead, Scipione made him wait in desperation.

When Scipione finally issued the pardon, a grateful Caravaggio gave him David with the Head of Goliath , one of Caravaggio’s best paintings.

Caravaggio was also commissioned to paint Madonna and Child with St. Anne for altarpiece in a chapel in St. Peter’s Basilica . When it was declared inappropriate for a basilica, Scipione appropriated the piece. That may have been his plan all along.

Though his methods were dastardly, Scipione’s taste was unassailable. The Borghese Gallery boasts some of the finest works of Italian art .

Scipione was expert at sniffing out talent. He commissioned works from rising stars such as Caravaggio and Bernini.

In particular, the cardinal commissioned Bernini to create a series of sculptures that would become the pièces de résistance of his sanctuary. Bernini carved intensely charged bodies of mythological gods and heroes from massive slabs of marble.

In the process, Bernini helped pioneer the emotion, dynamism, and immediacy characteristic of Baroque art.

In the late 1770’s, the Borghese family renovated the villa. They reorganized the collection to improve the viewing experience.

Thereafter, the villa functioned as a semi-public museum, only open to select members of the public.

In 1902, the museum was sold to the Italian government. In 1903, it opened as the Galleria Borghese.

Guide To The Borghese Gallery: What To See

It’s hard to drill down to the top paintings from over a thousand works of art.

But here’s my list of 16 important artworks to see in the Borghese Gallery. When you’ve only got two hours, you have to make every minute count. So decide what you want to see in advance.

Raphael, Young Woman With a Unicorn, 1505

1. Raphael, Young Woman With a Unicorn

Intended as a wedding gift, this Raphael masterpiece depicts the virtues and symbols of a young bride. The young Florentine woman in the painting symbolizes virginity and spiritual love.

Even the lap dog unicorn is a symbol of chastity. Medieval legends hold that only a virgin can tame a unicorn.

Raphael’s painting was clearly influenced by Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa . Raphael used Leonardo’s half length format, the sitter’s folded hands, and added a beautiful landscape in the background.

Unlike the Mona Lisa , however, the woman has a look of cool watchfulness not an enigmatic smile.

galleria borghese virtual tour

2. Raphael, Deposition

Sticky fingered Scipione stole Deposition from the altarpiece of a church in Perugia. The pope told the victimized city that the painting was a gift for his nephew. When confronted with his theft, he ordered a copy for the parishioners.

Raphael’s painting shows Christ being taken down from the cross. One woman faints at the tragedy, while another looks on in disbelief.

The painting fuses the best of Raphael’s rich colors with a touch of Michelangelo’s physicality. Raphael had recently been in Florence and seen Michelangelo’s battle frescos in the Palazzo Vecchio .

A hallmark of Raphael, Deposition is ordered in harmonious geometric perfection. His lyrical figures exude a narrative pull. The painting is currently on display, but behind glass walls undergoing diagnostic review for future conservation.

There’s plenty of other Raphael works to see in Rome. But his most breathtaking pieces are among the masterpieces of the Vatican .

galleria borghese virtual tour

3. The Sleeping Hermaphrodite

There are 20 known copies of the ancient Greek sculpture of the sleeping hermaphrodite. The Borghese’s Sleeping Hermaphrodite is a Roman copy inspired by Polycles’ Greek original from the 2nd century BC. Romans thought copying the Greeks reflected exquisite taste.

In this version, the figure of Hermaphroditos, always portrayed as a female with male genitalia, lies asleep on a messy mattress. The sculpture exudes ambiguous seductiveness. It may appear to be female or male.

Look up, the ceiling continues the theme. The frescos in the room depict the myth of Hermaphrodite, the son of Hermes and Aphrodite.

According to Ovid’s Metamorphoses , the youth’s double nature resulted from his forced union with the clingy water nymph Salmacis. She beseeched the gods to never let them part. Her wish was granted and their bodies were fused.

Another version of the Sleeping Hermaphrodite is at the Louvre, on a mattress created by Bernini in 1602 at Cardinal Scipione’s request. The Sleeping Hermaphrodite inspired many copies. There’s also a bronze one on display at the Prado Museum in Madrid .

Caravaggio, David with the Head of Goliath, 1610

4. Caravaggio, David with the Head of Goliath

The Borghese Gallery owns six Caravaggios. It’s the greatest collection of Caravaggio anywhere in the world. Caravaggio pioneered Baroque painting, much as Bernini pioneered Baroque sculpture. You could literally camp out in the Caravaagio room and never leave.

Caravaggio was a bit of a rogue, leading a reckless rock star life. In 1606, he got into a brawl and may have killed a man. He fled Rome to escape prosecution. Then he created this brilliant painting of uncompromising realism and, perhaps, of a guilty conscience.

In it, David carries the severed head of Goliath, having conquered his superior foe. Caravaggio painted his own face on the grisly Goliath. The painting is renowned for its use of chiaroscuro , which sets light colors against a dark background for maximum dramatic effect.

Caravaggio, Saint Jerome Writing, 1606

5. Caravaggio, Saint Jerome Writing , 1606

I heard a tour guide dissing this painting as a “lesser” work by Caravaggio. To my eye, that seemed wrong.

It may not be as soulful or graphic as Caravaggio’s David with the Head of Goliath painting. But it’s powerful.

Scipione commissioned the painting. St. Jerome was a Roman priest who translated the bible into Latin. In Caravaggio’s painting, a devout St. Jerome appears bald and wrinkled.

He innocently stretches out an arm to refill his writing quill, thereby drawing your attention to the skull.

Caravaggio, Madonna and Child with St. Anne, 1605-06

6. Caravaggio, Madonna and Child with St. Anne

This Caravaggio painting has an interesting backstory. In 1605, with the help of Scipione, Caravaggio received a commission to paint an altarpiece for St. Peter’s Basilica. It was the dream of every artist in Europe. Caravaggio was effectively given a chance to paint himself out of trouble.

His assigned task was to paint the Virgin Mary shooing away evil in the form of a snake, with baby Jesus and St. Anne by her side. Simple enough, except Caravaggio rendered it a rather blunt way, which he must have known might antagonize the pope.

In Caravaggio’s version of the biblical tale, he used a well known prostitute as the model for the virgin, whose face was instantly recognizable. Even though Caravaggio made an attempt at piousness (halos and all), he still refused to compromise.

Caravaggio’s virgin is depicted as a voluptuous and tender peasant with a hiked up red dress and ample breasts. Together, she and a frontally nude Jesus crush a snake beneath their feet. St. Anne is seen as a withered old gypsy woman.

Caravaggio’s painting was shown for only two days. Then, it was abruptly removed from St. Peters. It wasn’t “pure” enough, despite its sense of the miraculous in ordinary reality.

The painting was sold for a pittance to Cardinal Borghese. Any chance of Caravaggio receiving papal favor and future commissions was forever eliminated.

Berini, Apollo and Daphne, 1625

7. Berini, Apollo and Daphne

For some time, the great Baroque sculptor Bernini was only too happy to work exclusively for his patron, Cardinal Scipione. He produced three masterpieces for him.

Stunningly beautiful, these Berninis are the stuff of legend. It’s worth a trip to Rome just to see them.

Apollo and Daphne is inspired by a passage in Ovid’s Metamorphoses where a mischievous Cupid holds sway. Apollo is struck by Cupid’s golden arrow. Overwhelmed by lust, he chases after Daphne.

But Daphne’s simultaneously been stuck by a lead arrow of disgust. She cries out to her father, a river god, for help. He transforms her into a laurel tree.

Bernini captures the intense action of the dramatic moment, with the pair’s arms and legs moving in space and Daphne partially transformed into a tree. The details are so good that it seems real rather than merely mythological. Newly renovated, the sculpture looks absolutely pristine.

Bernini, Rape of Persephone, 1622

8. Bernini, Rape of Persephon e

This stunning sculpture was created when Bernini was only 24!

He takes the classic story of the abduction of Persephone from Roman mythology as his theme. The title is clickbait. In ancient terminology, “rape” means kidnapping.

This stunning sculpture was created when Bernini was only 24. He takes the classic story of the abduction of Persephone from Roman mythology as his theme. The title is clickbait. In ancient terminology, “rape” means kidnapping.

Pluto, king of the underworld, falls passionately in love with Persephone. He abducts her. Bernini captures the climatic moment in visceral life-like detail.

detail of Bernini sculpture in the Borghese Gallery

In the sculpture, Pluto seizes a crying Persephone. Terrified, she fights to free herself from her molester. You can see indentations in Persephone’s leg where Pluto grasps her. Cerebus, the three-headed guard dog, sits at Persephone’s leg barking.

Persephone’s mother, Demeter, was distraught. She caused crops to wither unless and until Zeus/Jupiter intervened and forced Pluto to let Persephone go.

But Persephone had tasted the underworld’s pomegranates, a situation no doubt maneuvered by Pluto. So Persephone spent the winter months down below, and returned to her mother in the spring.

Bernini, David, 1622

9. Bernini, David

Bernini’s David appears like an olympic athlete in swirling motion. His feet are wide apart and he twists to gain the maximum swing for his shot. The intensity of his gaze and energy are palpable. You can feel his resolution.

David’s face is that of Bernini’s. A mirror was held up for Bernini as he chiseled David’s face.

Bernini’s David is often compared and contrasted with Michelangelo’s Renaissance statue of David in Florence’s Accademia, one of Florence’s best museums . While Michelangelo’s is calm and serene, Bernini’s David is full of emotion and in attack mode.

Bernini, Self Portrait at age 35, 1630-35

10. Bernini, Self Portraits, 1623, 1630-35

Bernini could paint as well as sculpt, not surprising for an artist of his prodigious talent. The Borghese holds two of his self portraits, one at age 25 and one at age 35.

In the one above, the artists looks confident. He would go on to transform Rome, from St. Peter’s Square to Rome’s many fountains.

Bernini, The Goat Amaltea, 1609-15

11. Bernini, The Goat Amaltea

This small sculpture was created by a teenage Bernini, who was a child prodigy. It’s significant because the sculpture is Bernini’s earliest identified work.

The sculpture is based on the Greek myth where Cronus eats his children so they won’t murder him as prophesied. To protect her son Zeus from Cronus, Rhea hides him in a cave on Crete.

Bernini gives the classic myth a Roman spin. Two young boys are shown as putti, children who sometimes appear as cherubs or cupids. The goat looks almost motherly. The sculpture is typical of Bernini’s preference for sculptural groupings.

Antonio Canova, Pauline Borghese as Venus, 1808

12. Antonio Canova, Pauline Borghese as Venus

Commissioned by Camillo Borghese, Canova’s Venus Victorious is an utterly beautiful Neo-Classical marble statue of a semi-nude, reclining Pauline Bonaparte. She was the flirtatious and promiscuous sister of Napoleon, who married Camillo Borghese.

The golden apple in her hand identifies her as Venus. Venus was the goddess who won history’s first beauty contest. Originally, Canova intended to depict her as Diana. But Borghese insisted on Venus. In fact, the Borghese family believed they were descended from the heroic founder of Rome, Aeneas, the son of Venus.

The sculpture scandalized society. At the time, nude depictions of the aristocracy were rare. Invited viewers could only inspect it by candlelight. When asked how she could have posed in such a manner, Borghese cooly replied “the room wasn’t cold.”

The sculpture has been cleaned and restored. Its milky glow mimics Borghese’s indulgent ritual of daily milk baths.

Canova masterfully recreates the creases of the sheet, the plump pillows, and the soft dent she puts in the mattress. It’s beautiful to behold and everything seems almost real.

Titian, Sacred and Profane Love, 1514

13. Titian, Sacred and Profane Lov e

Titian’s Sacred and Profane love is the star of the Borghese’s wonderful “Venetian Room” and a famous Italian Renaissance painting. It was commissioned in 1513 to celebrate the marriage of Niccoló Aurelio, a secretary to the Council of Venice, to Laura Bagarotto.

As its title implies, the painting presents two forms of love. Sacred love stands on the right with a church in the background. Profane love, in the guide of a bejeweled woman, sits on the left.

A baby Cupid plays in the middle, an ambiguous combination of the two. Another ambiguous feature is that the women are sitting on a tomb filled with water.

In 1899, American art collector Isabella Stewart Garner considered buying the painting for her Boston museum . Legend holds that the Rothschild family also offered to pay a massive sum for this painting. But the Borghese family refused.

Antonio Corregio, Danae, 1531

14. Antonio Corregio, Danae

Antonio Corregio was a late Italian Renaissance painter who anticipated the Baroque period. He was known for his erotic mythological paintings and was a master of chiaroscuro.

The artist is a mysterious figure, with an undocumented life. Not much is known about him. He was reputedly both impoverished and aristocratic, uneducated and well-trained. Whatever the truth, historians consistently praise him for his naturalism and ability to capture feminine beauty.

This painting portrays Danae, a figure from Greek mythology. Danae was the daughter of Acrisius, King of Argos. An oracle forecast that Acrisius would be murdered by Danae’s son. So he jailed her in a bronze tower.

Correggio depicts Danae under a shower of gold. As she lies on a bed, Eros undresses her. At the foot of the bed, two putti or amoretti play with arrows.

Jacopo Bassano, Last Supper, 1542

15. Jacopo Bassano, Last Suppe r

This Last Supper painting is considered Bassano’s master work and was recently restored. It’s a classic of Mannerist painting with dramatic elements, elongated figures, and bright colors.

The Mannerists departed from the perfection and classicism of the High Renaissance. Unlike the linear and smooth organization of the twelve apostles in Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper in Milan , Bassano’s work is a disorganized scene.

You see the figure of Christ and some highly excited apostles in an unconventional peasant setting. (This use of “real world” settings would be adopted by Caravaggio in the Baroque period.) The apostles erupt at the prophecy that one of them will betray Christ.

The painting depicts the controversy and different reactions the apostles have to the prophecy. Jesus and the redheaded disciple form the center of the artwork. The way Bassano portrays them is different from other Last Suppers . Jesus lags behind someone and is almost in the background.

Each item on the table is intentional, and appears as a still life. The dark lighting gives the painting a nocturnal feel.

Il Sodoma, Leda and the Swan, 1510-15

16. Leda and the Swan After Leonardo da Vinci, Attributed to Il Sodoma

The painting of Leda and the Swan After Leonardo da Vinci , is attributed to Mannerist painter Il Sodoma. (Though the attribution is not uncontested.) Based on a Leonardo painting, the painting depicts the mythological story of Leda and the Swan.

Three drawings of Leda by Leonardo still survive, but his painting is a missing Leonardo. Many artists, including Raphael and Leonardo’s assistants, drew sketches of Leonardo’s Leda.

Research suggests that an unfinished version of the painting was in Leonardo’s house when he died in France 1519. The painting was inherited by one of Leonardo’s pupils, but then disappeared.

In Solodma’s rendition, as in Leonardo’s, Leda stands in an elegant curving pose, her hair partially escaping from her plaits. She wraps her arms around the swan’s neck.

X-rays techniques have revealed another composition beneath the painting depicting Leda’s four children emerging from the Swan’s eggs.

Tips For Visiting The Borghese Gallery

No guide to the Borghese Gallery would be complete without some must know tips for visiting. The Borghese Gallery can be tricky to visit. So, here are some tips to ensure you have the best museum experience.

1. How To Get a Ticket to the Borghese Gallery

Entrance to the Borghese Gallery is strictly controlled. The museum limits the number of visitors at any given time. 100 visitors are permitted in two hour time slots.

At the end of each slot, the gallery is emptied before the next set of visitors is let in. This system has the benefit of ensuring the museums isn’t too crowded.

In low season, it may be possible to purchase same day tickets onsite. But generally, you 100% must make a reservation to guarantee access and avoid disappointment.

sculptures in the Borghese Gallery, a must see museum in Rome

The easiest way to make a reservation is to book a Borghese Gallery tour . Your expert guide will make the necessary reservations and ensure you see the key highlights in your 2+ hour time slot.

You can also make a reservation either by telephone or online on the museum’s official website . You then collect your tickets in the basement.

If tickets are sold out, try buying a ticket with a reserved time slot from a reseller like Viator or Tiqets . The tickets will cost much more, but you will have your coveted spot.

Tiqets sends the ticket right to your smartphone. Viator representatives (the option I used) meet you outside the museum entrance. There, you’ll exchange your voucher for a ticket.

2. Borghese Gallery Rules

You’ll have to check everything that isn’t tiny before entering the gallery, including handbags, backpacks, strollers, umbrellas, etc. The bag check is outside and is free. There’s often a long line. So allot time for this process.

You should arrive early (30-40 minutes) to the Borghese Gallery to check your bag and collect your ticket. You don’t want that process to eat into your 2 hours. You’ll get a claim check to reclaim your items when you’re done with your visit.

No food or drink is permitted inside the museum.

3. How To Allot Your Time At The Borghese

The Borghese Gallery has 20 rooms spread spread across two floors. The ground floor has 8 rooms. The first floor, the Pinacoteca or painting gallery, has 12 rooms. After you hand over your ticket, you can pick up an audio guide in the basement.

On my visit, visitors were shuttled directly to the upper floor to begin the visit. You only have 2 hours, so keep an eye on the clock.

The quality of the works is so high, it’s easy to loose track of time. Try not to get stuck in the beautiful Venetian Room.

Allot most of your time for the ground floor, which houses the Bernini sculptures and Caravaggio paintings.

Lorenzo Lotto, Madonna and Child with Two Saints, 1508

4. Practical Information

Address : Piazzale del Museo Borghese.

Getting There : You can take a taxi or the metro. The nearest metro station is “Spagna” on Line A. If you take a taxi, Be sure to say you’re going to the Galleria Borghese, not the Villa Borghese. The gallery is a 20 minutes walk from the Barberini metro stop.

Hours : Open daily 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, except closed on Monday. Open late on Wednesday night until 10:00 pm No entry after 5:00 pm.

Entry fee :

13 €, plus online reservation fee of 2 €. The 1.5 hour audio guide is 5 €. I advise getting it, if you’re not on a guided tour.

On the second Wednesday of the month, the museum is free. But you must still reserve a spot, as per the usual procedure.

is it possible to download the guides. They are excellent. I would like to be able to take them into a gallery/museum. Wi fi to access internet isnt always possible. I’d raather have downloaded to my tablet.

I’m not sure … I’m not very tech savvy. I always travel with international data bc I use my phone as a GPS. You could open the page on your phone when you have wifi and keep the page open.

You'll not have time to linger at each stop but it's worth it. Four stars only because I wished the tour went a little longer so we weren't in quite a rush. Read more Written April 28, 2024
  • Brenna C 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Rome in a day - for reals! So let me start by saying if you only have a day in Rome or you want to spend a full day seeing all the major tourist spots, this is the tour for you. On the other hand, please plan to walk around the city of Rome and the Vatican for 7 straight hours on cobblestone roads and with lots of steps. Having gotten that disclosure out of the way… it is a fabulous way to see Roman a day, our tour guide Giuseppe was from Sicily and has lived in Italy, his whole life. He was so knowledgeable on all the attractions. He was a little difficult to understand at times, but a very kind man! Plan on wearing comfortable shoes… this tour moves fast, so not for those who couldn’t walk 5 miles in a day on their own (we had a few in our group who were struggling with the time on their feet). Spent almost an hour outside listening to him explain each part of the Sistine Chapel before going in since they can’t talk inside. Four tour groups passed us while he got way too detailed! We missed so much of the Vatican Museum because he fell behind so much and there is a time limit. Best part by far was when the tour was over and we could explore St Peters Basilica on our own. Worst tour I’ve ever had! Also did the Trestavere Food Tour with the same company later that evening, different guide, and it was great! Read more Written April 25, 2024

He was very knowledgeable and made the experience really fun. We made four stops on the tour and in between each we were treated to a plethora of facts about Rome and the area where we were walking. 1. A bakery where we ate sandwiches of mortadella, mozzarella, and focaccia. We couldn't resist buying some of the other pastries and baked goods. 2. A fried cod fillet shop. Think fish and chips, but 100x better. 3. A sit down restaurant where we had 2 pasta dishes and a veal dish. All very delicious and we were stuffed afterwards, but the best was yet to come. 4. Viterbo and Bomarzo Tour

A trip to the Countryside! On a short trip from Rome, you'll arrive in the quaint countryside of a town called Viterbo, an Etruscan origin as many towns in the area. Even though it is said that this village was founded in the early centuries Anno Domini, it's historical relevance started with the fortification by the Northern King, Desiderius, in the vain attempt to conquer Rome. It has later become one of the Papal States, and desired by Emperors, for centuries, due to its favorable strategic position. When finally, in 1905, it became a Free Commune. It hosts incredible buildings and structures, aside from the breathtaking views. Like the Papal Palace an outstanding building adjacent to the Duomo of Viterbo, it has actually hosted Papacy for approximately 20 years. Since Rome, at the time of Pope Alexander the 4th, was becoming too violent. Viterbo was the perfect environment for the Holy See to continue its work. So of course, this Papal Palace is an incredible building, absolutely worth a visit. The Duomo of Viterbo right next door, is the town Cathedral dedicated to Saint Laurence. Built in the 12th Century where a smaller church used to be. A few interesting notes about this Cathedral are the beautiful original facade from 1570 and the fact that it is built on top of an 8th century church, which was originally built on top of a temple in devotion to Hercules. Aside from these main sites in Viterbo, there are several other attractions to visit Like the Medieval  neighborhood, hosting incredible architectures. And the National Etruscan Museum. Viterbo is not the only charming place you'll see. In fact there are a few other stops your tour driver will make, that will make your head spin! Bagnaia and Bomarzo Visit Villa Lante in Bagnaia One of the greatest structural accomplishments of the Italian 1500s. In Villa Lante, you will see the fountains of the moors, the two mansions (Gambara and Montalto), and a spectacular system of the fountains and water games and a beautiful park. The entire Villa (between the garden and park) occupies a surface of 22 hectares. The particularity of Lante Villa is shown by the magnificence of the garden, especially in the architectural work. You will have lunch in a typical “trattoria” before visiting Bomarzo. Bomarzo is a fantastic garden. It slips into the theatrical, symbol-laden traditions of the Baroque period. Unsurprisingly, after several centuries of neglect, it was rediscovered during the 1950s by surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, who found inspiration in the garden’s mixture of natural and bizarre design. After a beautiful day in the Countryside, visiting the most magical, hidden locations, you’ll return to your requested location in Rome.

Bomarzo, Caprarola and Calcata Tour

A tour to visit the Monsters Park of Bomarzo, Caprarola another incredible village and finally Calcata. You’ll discover some of the most amazing features and hidden gems. Certainly a day to remember. First stop will be Bomarzo (about a 1 hour drive) were you can visit the “Monster Park”. This garden is an extraordinary sight, because with its strange, disturbing sculptures (taken from Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso) it was created by Vicino Orsini, Duke of Bomarzo, to rival Caprarola and the Villa Lante. You’ll continue to Caprarola where you can visit the famous Palazzo Farnese. Initially intended to be a fortress by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, its construction started in 1525, and was later transformed by Vignola into a magnificent palace. Antonio Tempesti, Giovanni Il Vecchio, Giovanni Antonio Da Varese, Raffaellino da Reggio, Giacomo Del Duca and Jacopo Bertoia worked to realize this magnificent summer residence. Two bridges connect the palace to the immense Italian Garden and to the park on the back side of the palace. The Summer and Winter gardens encircle the Palace. Fountains, grottos, nymphaea, and numerous statues enrich the way between hedges and large staircases. *Eventually, if the Farnese Palace in Caprarola is closed on the day of your visit, we will substitute it with a visit of the magnificent Orsini-Odescalchi Castle of Bracciano, perched overlooking the shores of the beautiful Bracciano Lake Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. On the way back to Rome, stop at Calcata. This very old village, once an outstanding center of the Faliscans, is now one of the best kept, picturesque towns in the region.

Rome in a Day Tour

Welcome in Rome! There is really no better way to start a Roman vacation than with this private tour. One of our personal tour driver will welcome you at your hotel or any other place of your convenience in Rome, to whisk you away, on a 7 hour trip through history, art, archeology and the basic Rome way of living that is just a delight and so interesting to experience. This Tour of Rome will start off with a stop in the famous Piazza Venezia a famous circular square constantly beaten by hundreds of cars and vespas and motorini (what we call mopeds and bikes). While horns are blaring in the traffic, passerby's always in a hurry and the famous Italian charm for hand gestures and raised voices the main constant, all you will notice is the monumental structure overlooking the Piazza. A monument dedicated to Italy's last king Victor Emanuel the Second, and resting place of the Unknown soldier. A fallen soldier from WW1 that is laid to rest there to honor and tribute every Italian soldier who's fought and fallen in every war old or recent. You can notice An imposing horseman in a giant bronze statue, overlooking the entire city center, to magnify the importance of the Italian Kingdom in its glory days. And just above is a building, temple-like in structure, with white marble steps and columns, placed on top of one of Rome's legendary hills. Italian flags hanging on it's ends. This monument is really hard to miss. Fun fact: The monument of Victor Emmanuel, officially called Altare della Patria (the Altar of the Nation) is also known simply as the wedding cake. For it's distinctive shape, built in white, marble layers, one floor after the other. Resembling a big white wedding sheet cake. This altar shares its space with Capitoline Hill, Capitol Hill or simply known as Campidoglio. It is one of Rome's 7 hills placed in between Campus Martius and the Roman Forum, and it is head of the Roman Government, With an incredible square commissioned by Pope Paul the third and created by Michelangelo himself in the 16th century. But Capitol Hill does not only hosts Rome's City hall, the Mayor's office and the Capitolini Museums (which offers a vast amount of marble artifacts, artwork and other curiosities from Roman times) but it offers AMAZING VIEWS of the city below, on one end of the hill is Piazza Venezia, Campus Martius and modernization, on the other the Ancient citadel of the Roman Forum. A perfect balance between present and the past. Speaking of Roman Forum, you absolutely go across Via dei Fori Imperiali, an ancient way in Rome that crosses this part of town, with the Forum's archeological site on both sides. Envision Temples, Market places, Marble buildings and life conducted in these squares centuries ago. This is where Roman Senate would reunite, where citizens would gather to worship archaic divinities and conduct their business. To keep the Ancient Roman theme alive, walking straight through the ancient Roman Forum you will arrive at the Colosseum The one and only Colosseum, the Flavian Amphitheater An ancient, imposing structure built to delight and entertain the people of Rome, in the prime of its years. With gory, cruel hunts and gladiator fights but also fun scenes of Naval battles, where they would fill the Arena with water and float around in ships. A colossal building in the heart of Rome, to gather the people, to bring people together. We absolutely recommend a stop here. But Rome is full of wonderful things to see, in a fun, intuitive and entertaining way. With squares, steps and fountains and churches. Take Piazza Navona for example The most extravagant of Rome’s Square, adorned with the fountain of The Four Rivers by Bernini, and the church of his rival, Borromini. Visit Piazza Della Rotonda, where you can see the Pantheon, the best preserved and enchanting monument of ancient times. The Spanish Steps A wonderful square, world famous for the beautiful stair case that comes down from Trinità dei Monti with beautiful views of  Via dei Condotti, intersecting with via del Corso. The most "In" streets for shopping, with great boutiques and haute couture. Walking along the narrow streets you can find other curiosities such as the mighty Pantheon on Piazza della Rotonda, the once temple dedicate to All the Gods, the Ancient Roman building is now an active Catholic church. Then, of course there is the Trevi Fountain, a little further down the streets. Make sure to take tons of pictures of this magnificent fountain that attracts so many people from all over the world, in that small square. This private tour is a whirlwind of emotions! You'll be catapulted into the Middle Ages, Ancient Roman Times, then to Renaissance times, and back to Roman times. With a stop to grab a quick bite to eat, if you like. Your tour driver will know the perfect place. In fact, near the end of the tour, you will have to make another mandatory stop at the Aventine Hill, another majestic hill, hosting picture perfect views of the Eternal City. Then head to the Circus Maximus, where chariot races were performed in imperial Rome, as we can see in one of the classic American movies, Ben Hur. At the end of the tour, your tour driver will take you wherever you like to be dropped off at, hotel or other. This itinerary can be tailored and can change, so it's not a strict preview. All this is just to give you a taste of all the wonderful places you could see during your time out on the streets of Rome. *Upon request, the icing on the cake would be to reserve one of our professional guides: if you want to enrich your activity, we highly recommend selecting the service of one of our expertise guides for the day!

After that, you’ll head to the Pantheòn, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, and enjoy the outstanding view of Rome from the Pincio Terrace, and Piazza Navona. After so many fantastic things you've already seen this morning, you'll have to "carb up" for the best part of your tour! The Vatican Museums Your private tour driver will take you at the entrance, that unmissable doorway, surmounted by high walls and a distinctive plaque that says " Musei Vaticani" he will give you all the instructions on how to enjoy your time in the Museums completely along with the Sistine Chapel. *Upon request, we can arrange one of our expert guides inside the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel: Having one of our qualified guides would offer you an immersive opportunity, to learn absolutely everything there is to know about this incredible place: From peculiar traditions to art, history and literature, along with granting you direct access to Saint Peter's Basilica. Since the only known public entrance to Saint Peter's would be from all the way outside in the Square (for which the lines are usually very long) our guides have permission to enter the Basilica directly from inside the Vatican, after you've visited the Sistine Chapel! Visiting the Basilica other than with the guide would not be possible. Since it's entrance is free, it is usually very crowded, lines are very long not leaving enough time for you to visit it, if without a guide Since we have top level experts, the costs are appropriate to the quality of service. In case you are considering one of our private guides to take an exclusive tour of the Vatican, you can select its service during the booking process to add it to the cost for the tour. However, if you are more incline to visit the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, without the Basilica as a priority, we definitely recommend visiting the Vatican on your own. At your own pace, to fully appreciate everything you'll see, without having to stick to a prearranged itinerary. You could also consider Audio-guides, with amazing explanations and virtual itineraries to choose from.  For a personalized tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. At a lighter rate, given the extra costs. We will be happy to arrange skip the line tickets, with privileged entrance of course, (bookable as extras) for you to explore the Vatican's freely on your own. This way you can enjoy visiting each chamber, admiring beautiful artifacts, statues, paintings and frescoes in any of the Museums inside the Vatican you'd like to see, entirely at your own pace! Audio-guide tickets, to download directly on your phone, for an interactive tour of the Museums and Sistine Chapel, still at your own pace. Spending your time in awe and your nose in the air! The most incredible beauty awaits! Visiting the Vatican Museums on your own, will allow you to visit the different wings , like Raphael's Rooms, Cortile Della Pigna, Belvedere, Gallery of Candelabra, the Gallery of Tapestries or the Gallery of Maps. And the Sistine Chapel. Since the Basilica of Sain't Peter's has free access, they've devoted it's entrance directly from Saint Peter's Square, so there isn't a way to enter the Basilica from inside the Museums. Just know that depending on the number of visits in a day, some wings might be closed. But this won't matter at all, we can assure you, there is just so much to see, you'll hardly even notice! Last but not least, on this Rome and Vatican tour, the magnificent Sistine Chapel! This incredible masterpiece, Michelangelo's heritage. We don't want to say too much about it, because we don't want to spoil the surprise. Just know that you will have some time, inside this chapel, to take a moment. To reflect on the overwhelming beauty. Take a seat in one of the chairs placed at it's sides, or stand in the middle and look up, to study the different details of the scenes and stories that have inspired the artist. Then you'll head to the exit, walking along the famous spiral stairwell. Still in awe, after the incredible experience. You'll reunite with your tour driver at the exit and then head back to Civitavecchia Port, to board your ship in perfect time.
