Widely popular Scottish art rock outfit, Simple Minds found huge fame in the 1980s, best known for their breakthrough hit single, "Don't You (Forget About Me)" which established the act on both sides of the Atlantic.

Finding influence from the likes of Roxy Music and U2, Simple Minds formed out of the remnants of Glaswegian punk group, Johnny and the Self-Abusers, with guitarist Charlie Burchill and singer Jim Kerr joining forces with bassist Derek Frobes, drummer Brian McGee and keyboardist Mick McNeil in 1978. The band's initial releases moved between dense art-pop ("Life in a Day") to the experimental-leaning "Reel to Real Cacophony," to Euro-disco influenced "Empires and Dance." With "Sons and Fascination" and "Sister Feelings Call," they streamlined their sound into more accessible pop, before finding significant chart success with "New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)."

However, it was with the 1985 hit single, "Don't You (Forget About Me)" that Simple Minds found international success. Despite its success, topping the American charts, Simple Minds decided not to feature the single on their next album, "Once Upon a Time," due to Kerr's dislike of the song's lyrics. The album was still a success, breaking into the US Top Ten and becoming certified Gold.

Simple Minds failed to build on the momentum of their last album, with the overtly political "Street Fighting Years' failing to meet its success. Personnel changes after the more straightforward "Real Life" threw the band's future into question yet Kerr and Burchill managed to persevere and breathe new life into the act. 1995's "Good News From The Next World" gained moderate airplay support, with a short North American tour shortly after yet they were unable to restore their previous energies.

Into the new millennium, Simple Minds had found a new enthusiasm of sorts, releasing the cover album, "Neon Lights," which covered the likes of Patti Smith, Neil Young and David Bowie. New material appeared a year later with "Cry," followed by "Our Secrets Are the Same" in 2003, which helped to reignite interest in the band. Several reissues and two more albums of new material, "Black and White" (2005) and "Graffiti Soul" (2009) maintained the band's relevance, prompting a global tour and festival appearances. 2014's "Big Music" found critical acclaim with their well-crafted pop, debuting at number 12 on the UK Albums Chart.

Live reviews

I had to see Simple Minds in concert just because their song "Don't You Forget About Me" from "The Breakfast Club" was such a pivotal point in my young life. I heard that song as a child, and bought their albums throughout the years listening hard for the next lesson that I needed to learn from them.

I enjoyed their brand of 80s music just because it wasn't the typical bubble gum pop type stuff that was out at the time. Their music was more timeless, like a progressive rock that could stand along side Tears for Fears and Depeche Mode. The concert was something I will be forever grateful for having the opportunity to attend. The audience had a fair representation for all walks of life and all ages. The music was well appreciated by everyone in attendance and there as much dancing and singing to accompany the performance. While some of their music may have a moody feel, the overall emotion the audience got was enjoyment and happiness.

The music of Simple Minds has a purity to it that allows for some of the derogatory subjects that they address in their songs. Hopefully Simple Minds will continue to inspire future generations.

Scottish rockers Simple Minds first formed almost forty years ago. After struggling to achieve commerciality during their first releases, they scored a string of number one albums in the UK during the 80's and recorded a huge international hit entitled 'Don't You Forget About Me' for the soundtrack to cult film 'The Breakfast Club'.

This took the band touring around the world and the lessons they learned during this time are still evident in their stage show. Now a frequenter of the UK festival circuit, Simple Minds hold a great notion of nostalgia and their music really resonates with a great deal of the audience. They still choose to delight fans with the favourites such as 'Glittering Prize' and 'Promised You A Miracle' which cause huge singalong from the baying crowds.

Great showmen to this day, the band are able to conduct their instruments whilst still whipping the crowds into frenzy before perfect renditions of 'Alive And Kicking'. The crowd erupts in cheers for 'Don't You Forget About Me' and the anthemic 80's tones sound just as wonderful as you would imagine.

Just saw Simple Minds at the Beacon, NYC, 10/2/18. What a thrill!!! I had waited so long (too long) to see the group who I have LOVED since the early 1980's. They were FANTASTIC!!! They performed all of my favorites (Promised You a Miracle, Love Song, New Gold Dream 81,82,83,84 and many others). I was lucky to be in the 3rd row (wish I had purchased tix for the 1st row!), and could see how wonderful Jim Kerr was interacting with the audience.

It is great to see when musicians actually show how they enjoy doing what they do and appreciate their fans.

Although I am not so healthy, and my feet go painfully numb after a half hour of standing, I forced myself to stand and dance for the whole show. It was worth it!!

I'm thinking of calling out sick tomorrow and going up to Boston to catch them again! Or maybe D.C. this weekend! I am so happy I got to have seen them now but I'm also sad because I don't know when it will happen again. I really hope they return to NYC again soon, or that I will be in Europe whenever they are touring again.

The Simple Minds concert in Barcelona was simply sensational.

I was dubious around how they could translate their rock/pop hits into an acoustic set, but it was extremely well done.

The band played the majority of their hits and even did some covers of David Bowie and Prince, which were excellent.

KT Tunstall as support was a great fit, and I'm also a fan. Her set was short, but she later joined the band for a couple of encore songs.

I have seen the band several times in Barcelona at different venues and the acoustic venue was pretty special. It was relatively intimate with around 1200-1500 and all with great views of the stage.

I travelled from Mallorca for the gig and wasn't disappointed.

Had waited so many years to see Simple Minds, so was excited to see them at the SF Masonic. Venue was great, perfect sightlines from nearly every seat.

Sadly, was soo, so disappointed that the drummer did not play original drum lines ("Promised You a Miracle" was really drab without its signature drumming), and most of the songs were just, well, flat. Don't think it was the acoustics in the venue, but rather a very muddy mix, and few songs had the clean/clear/punchy sound of the originals.

Showman Jim Kerr was enjoying himself, and the backup singer was perfect, but we ended up leaving before New Gold Dream (my favorite), preferring to listen to it on Spotify so as not to hear an inert, live version...

My 12th concert with Simple Minds and it was nice to see them live again. Had a little problem with hearing Jim Kerr's voice at the beginning of the concert but it became better. I'm always pleased to see simple minds but this concert was not among the best ones, not only because of the "sound problems" but also because the setlist was a bit confusing in my opinion. I will still rate this concert 7/10, i love Jim Kerr's energy on the stage, Mel Gaynor's awesome sound on the drums and Charlie Burchill's amazing repertoire in ways of playing the guitar.... I'm allready looking foward to see them again....

Simply put,it was one of the best nights for my daughter, wife and myself at a concert. Jim Kerr put it all out there for us. The band played great. We had a meet and greet as well and the band was so down to earth. They signed a Setlist special for my daughter for her birthday. They played all their big hits from old to new. Not only did Jim hold our hands during a few songs, they put the mic to me during Sanctify Yourself for me to sing.. It was purely amazing the performance and connection they have with their fans.

What an amazing show! These guys know how to party! Simple Minds played two sets that equaled out to about 23 songs. There was a good mix of old and new. They had us screaming and dancing along with them. They were really great. The venue was nice too. Not too big and not too small. Staff st venue were really helpful too! Casey was the guy who told us what to do and where to go during the meet and greet and he was really pleasant..! Great job simple Minds

Simple Minds last night @ Coventry Butts Park. You can't beat the good old 80's songs from them.Don't you forget about me. My stepson brought us the tickets for his Dad's 50th birthday,as he knew how much we like Simple Minds. I've now seen Simple Minds twice & my husband Simon Harris 3 times. Well worth seeing. Pretenders is another great group from our generation. Get them to Peterborough Cambridgeshire & Northamptonshire.

I’ve loved Simple Minds for over 30 years, had Sister feelings call in vinyl & last nights show was a big deal for me, I still listen to them at work all the time.

Loved the show! Good for them for being so generous with a 3 hour show! Got guitar picks from the band so I’m super excited.

The drummer is a beast! All musicians were top! Had a blast & will always remember it.

RED HOT SUMMER   TOUR is thrilled to announce its next series of dates for the 2024 season from one of Australia’s most sought-after summer festivals.  These iconic outdoor shows will take place centre stage in Mornington, Yarra Valley, Bribie Island & Perth, and for series two, this mega-line-up will be co-headlined by SIMPLE MINDS and ICEHOUSE.

It’s been over 40 years since Scottish superstars,  SIMPLE MINDS,  toured Australia for the first time in 1981 when they were invited by their good friends,  ICEHOUSE . History repeats itself as they come together on stage all these decades later.  Says Jim Kerr , “ we had the best time during that six-week period, and we’re ecstatic to be able to come back and to do it all over again with our mates, Icehouse!  We love everything about this band and Australia. We are always welcomed with open arms and have such a special bond with our Aussie fans.  We can’t wait to get back there and play in some of the best outdoor locations in your beautiful country.”

Iva Davies went on to say “b ack in 1981, on ICEHOUSE’s first journey overseas, we were introduced to Simple Minds and their great stage presence when we went on the same tour supporting them around the UK.  It was an exciting time and we all got on so well that we asked Simple Minds to support us when we returned to Australia.  They did and Australians became one of the most welcoming audiences in the world for them.  I’m really looking forward to our co-headlining tour next year – it will be an opportunity to relive some memories and thrilling to see how far we’ve all come since those first shows.”

With a career spanning over 45 years,  ICEHOUSE  is one of Australia’s most iconic bands, transcending age groups with their hit songs, well known and loved by audiences across generations, playing to sell-out, capacity audiences in Australia, New Zealand and throughout the world.  Formed by  Iva Davies , the band’s frontman and musical creative force,  ICEHOUSE  went on to have an amazing 28 Platinum albums, eight Top 10 albums and over thirty Top 40 singles.

ICEHOUSE’s  unofficial Australian anthem, Great Southern Land, has been a part of almost every Australian’s summer soundtrack for the past 40 years and in 2014, it was inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive’s Sounds of Australia registry. It’s also been remixed a number of times, most notably Bill Laswell’s  The Great Southern Mix , clocking in at almost 16 minutes, and the  Byrralku Dhangudha remix  from 1994, which features Indigenous musicians playing and singing the chorus in their own language. Its message is as current and relevant today as it was when it first appeared.

In 2017, the band received another tribute when Qantas invited the public to vote for the names of the planes for their new fleet of Dreamliner 787-9s. Out of over 60,000 name suggestions submitted, Great Southern Land won the honour of the very first plane in the fleet being named after the iconic hit.  In the same year,  ICEHOUSE  also celebrated 40 years of live performance with a national Australian tour and several outdoor performances in New Zealand and has continued to perform selected concerts for sell-out audiences in both countries since then.

SIMPLE MINDS  are one of the UK’s most successful bands that have achieved worldwide success. Having sold over 60 million albums, they have experienced a remarkable journey since releasing their debut album  Life In A Day  in 1979. Over the course of their stunning career,  SIMPLE MINDS  have sold out stadiums and arenas across the globe. Constantly evolving, the band’s rousing choruses and booming atmospherics made them one of the most iconic bands of the 80s. Their trademark sound has earned them massive hits – with songs such as  Promised You A Miracle, Glittering Prize, Don’t You (Forget About Me), Alive and Kicking, Sanctify Yourself, Belfast Child  and  Let There Be Love  dominating the airwavesglobally .

A ustralia was the first country in the world, outside of the UK, to embrace  SIMPLE MINDS , giving the band its first-ever hit single  Love Song  and first gold album ‘New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)’. The love affair has continued ever since.

Noiseworks  provided the soundtrack to every big night in the 1980s, with rock anthems  No Lies, Take Me Back, Hot Chilli Woman, Touch , and countless others. Get ready to rock as the original members reform to honour the memory of their co-founder and guitarist, the late, great, Stuart ‘Chet’ Fraser. Jon Stevens, Steve Balbi, Kevin Nicol, and Justin Stanley will be joined by very special guest Jack Jones on guitar and vocals. With the release of their new 2022 album, along with all their legendary hits,  Noiseworks  will reignite a passion for rock n roll!

Daryl Braithwaite  is an iconic Australian singer/songwriter and ARIA Hall Of Fame Inductee. As the frontman and vocalist for the 1970s band Sherbet,  Braithwaite  rode a wave of local and international success with songs such as  Howzat  and  Summer Love  propelling the band to superstar status.

Braithwaite  went on to embark on a highly successful solo career which included a No. 1 ARIA Album Chart for his album Edge (1988), featuring the hit singles  As The Days Go By  and  One Summer .  Braithwaite’s  1990 follow-up album Rise included the single  The Horses  which reached No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and to this day remains an anthem for generations of Australians. In 2020, he joined a host of local and international artists to perform at Fire Fight Australia, Concert For National Bushfire Relief in front of an audience in excess of 70,000 at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.

In 1992,  Tania Doko  and  James Roche  formed  BACHELOR GIRL , and the duo became one of the most loved Australian acts of the 90s & early 2000s, enjoying Australian and international success in Asia, Scandinavia and the US (including signing with the legendary Clive Davis at Arista Records). Standing out with their exceptional songwriting and  Tania’s  warm, powerful vocal, both PPCA and APRA have reported a massive achievement for the band – their hit single  Buses and Trains  was the most played Australian composition on Australian radio in its first year of release and during the last 25 years overall. In 1999,  Buses and Trains  also received the coveted APRA ‘Song of the Year’ award, while the critically acclaimed debut album ‘Waiting for the Day’ spawned five chart-topping, radio-friendly singles (including  Treat Me Good  and  Permission To Shine ), reached double platinum certification and an ARIA win to the duo for ‘Producer of the Year’.

After a brief hiatus to pursue their individual musical paths as writers and producers for outside artists in Sweden and the U.K,  Tania  and  James  reunited to release their socially conscious single  Speak , in 2018. With their hit-studded and dynamic live set,  Bachelor Girl  have secured impressive support slots, including international heavyweights Eurythmics and The Goo Goo Dolls. More recently, the band has special guested on widely popular festival gigs such as Day on the Green (with John Farnham, Daryl Braithwaite et al.), the Red Hot Summer tour, and can also add Icehouse to the list of iconic acts they have toured with.

THANK YOU, Victoria!

The show on January 19 th  at the Ulumbarra Theatre in Bendigo is now SOLD OUT!

simple minds tour 2024 perth

Due to factors beyond our control, it is with deep regret that we have to announce that the Trip The Switch event which was to take place in Ipswich on July 3rd has been cancelled today based on advice from Queensland Health.

With the unfolding Covid-19 situation in Sydney and Queensland where both governments have imposed new restrictions and/or lockdowns due to the increased risk of transmission with the Delta Variant and Alpha Variant, tough restrictions have been implemented that prevent people from the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area, where key band and crew members from several of the bands appearing at the event live, from entering Queensland.

The organisers, artists and technicians had applied for Travel Exemptions for these key personnel to be able to perform at Trip The Switch and had provided a detailed substantial Covid-19 management plan for them. However, given the unfolding and expanding pandemic fears in Sydney and Brisbane, the department saw the risk of transmission as potentially too great.

Because of this, the organisers have made the difficult decision to cancel the event.

Ticketholders will be contacted by Ticketmaster during Monday June 28th regarding refunds - please do not contact them before that as they will not be in a position to process refunds until Monday - and we urge anyone who had booked accommodation or made travel arrangements to cancel them today or as soon as possible.

We are sorry to disappoint our ICEHOUSE fans and friends - the band looks forward to performing again whenever that may be possible and to seeing you there.

It is with great regret that ICEHOUSE announces that, due to Victoria’s current Covid-19 restrictions on gatherings, the performance at Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre, scheduled for next Thursday June 24th will have to be cancelled.

Yesterday's announcements from the Victorian Government severely limit the number of patrons who can attend a venue and these mean that it isn’t possible for the previously Sold Out event to take place.

As ICEHOUSE has no touring plans at present where another date could be set, the band and promoter, Regional Touring, reluctantly agreed today to cancel the performance and refund ticketholders.

Everyone involved is saddened by having to do so and apologise for any inconvenience caused to the band’s fans and supporters as well as the local businesses, technical crew and other staff who are affected.

Ulumbarra Theatre box office will be in touch tomorrow (Friday June 18th) from 10am to process refunds to all ticket holders. There is no need to contact the venue directly.

ICEHOUSE looks forward to a time when the band can get back to perform in Bendigo.

Animal Sentience: The Controversy

Some scientists restrict sentience to only animals with nervous tissue..

Posted July 26, 2024 | Reviewed by Abigail Fagan

  • The absence of a neocortex does not appear to preclude an organism from experiencing affective states.
  • Many scientists overvalue the role neurons and the neocortex play in consciousness.
  • It is quite possible that felt states can be achieved by many different biological substrates.

GoodStudio/Shutterstock

As will become apparent from the following discussion, the debate over animal sentience has, like a growing number of present-day issues, become rather polarized.

A case in point was the recent Annual Meeting of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) where a summit was held called "Animal Sentience: What Does It Mean, Why Is It Difficult to Define, and What Effect May It Have on the Veterinary Profession?" Dr. Tim Arthur, the CMVA’s newly elected president, told me this was the first time this topic was discussed at one of their conventions. He directed me to the recently issued CVMA Position Statement on Animal Sentience which states, “Sentience in this document means having the capacity to experience positive and negative feelings such as pleasure, excitement, fear , hunger, pain, and distress ... The CVMA holds that many species of animals are sentient.”

Professor Georgia Mason, in the Department of Integrative Biology, at the University of Guelph was one of the speakers at the conference. I contacted her to seek her views on animal sentience.

She said she fully supported the CMVA’s position paper. In response to my question, she explained the difference between sentience and consciousness by saying that sentience is a type of basic consciousness. “It is the ability to feel or be aware, sometimes described as the ‘what it is like’ aspect of a state. Sentience does not imply self-awareness, theory of mind , or anything else 'higher order' (i.e. complicated/cognitively sophisticated.”

Mason uses sentience to refer to just the sub-type that is most ethically relevant, emotions, an animal's capacity for pain or other forms of conscious affect. Mason has referred to measures such as discriminating between stimuli, displaying Pavlovian conditioning, and even learning simple instrumental responses as “red herrings” that should not be used to infer sentience because they are also present in non-sentient organisms, notably those lacking nervous systems, like plants and protozoa.

In Canada, the Canadian Council for Animal Care, “utilizes affective states as the primary determinant of animal welfare” while internationally, the World Organization for Animal Health says that “an animal experiences good welfare if the animal is … not suffering from unpleasant states such as pain, fear and distress.”

Mason, a passionate animal welfare advocate, agrees. “Pain and suffering is morally relevant. The guiding question should perhaps not be, “Is there evidence that this species is sentient?” But instead: “Are we sure it is not?”

The Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness, signed by a prominent group of scientists, which Mason thinks goes too far, states that “the absence of a neocortex does not appear to preclude an organism from experiencing affective states. Convergent evidence indicates that non-human animals have the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of conscious states along with the capacity to exhibit intentional behaviors."

Personally, I agree with this statement. It seems to me that many scientists overvalue the role neurons and the neocortex play in consciousness. Cells, tissues, organs, and animals form various kinds of minds along a continuum from the simplest to the most complex. There is little difference between neurons and other cell types. Synaptic proteins, ion channels, and gap junctions already existed in our unicellular ancestors and were used by electrically active cells to coordinate their actions at the beginning of time. Neurons evolved from these much simpler cell types and some of the brain's speed-optimized functions emerged around the time of bacterial biofilms. Neurons are specialized cells like red blood cells or liver cells. But there is nothing magic about neurons.

I thought that perhaps Professor Nicolas Rouleau might provide a different perspective on the topic of animal sentience. So, on a sunny day in July, I drove to Wilfrid Laurier University to meet with Nic, as he likes to be called. Sitting in his fifth-floor office in the Department of Health Sciences I asked him to comment on Mason and Lavery’s paper on animal sentience. “The authors” he remarked, “remove supposed ‘red herring’ measures of sentience precisely because they are present in a group of organisms that they've a priori determined are non-sentient. Theirs is a circular argument which is not based on evidence but simply a prejudice , namely the lack of a nervous system .

Nic is a neuroscientist who contends that all attributions of cognition (i.e., mental actions), including sentience, are always inferred based on embodied behaviours, including verbal self-report in humans. He says, “If felt states in humans and other animals are always inferred, why is the same leap from observable behaviour to inferred sentience not afforded to other organisms, including plants?”

I want to know how he differentiates between simple reflexes and conscious behaviour. “Behaviours are fundamentally cognitive,” he says, “because they are goal-directed, anticipatory, flexible, and adaptive. These qualities are unlike simple reflexes, which are comparatively rigid, typically inborn, and do not require any accompanying mental action.”

simple minds tour 2024 perth

I wonder, does a being require a neural substrate to be sentient? “Not at all. A function is said to be substrate-independent when it can be achieved without the contingency of a particular material or physical medium. Computation, for example, can be implemented in many ways by machines and living organisms alike. It is quite possible that felt states can be achieved in multiple ways and by many different biological substrates.”

After a most stimulating morning, Nic took me on a tour of his lab where he introduced me to his wife, Nirosha Murugan, who is also a professor at WLU. These two young scientists are doing incredible research on cancer and embodied and bioengineered tissues to model neural diseases. I would not be surprised if they receive the Nobel eventually.

Nic did post-grad work at Tufts University in Boston. One of his mentors was Michael Levin, Distinguished Professor of Biology and Director of the Allen Discovery Center. Levin conducts research at the intersection of developmental biology, computer science, and behavioral science. In my opinion, he is one of the most brilliant scientists alive today. A few years ago, at the end of a long conversation with him, I asked what being human means to him. His answer still rings in my ears: “Being human is to have moral concern and compassion for every being.”
