As much as Phil Collins seems to come in for near-relentless stick these days - and as much as Genesis often bear the brunt of that too, often as a result of guilt by association - you couldn’t accuse them of being safe or formulaic; in fact, they helped to pioneer progressive and even art rock, long before Talk Talk were making records like Laughing Stock or Spirit of Eden. In doing so, they pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible in the late sixties and early seventies, and became a huge commercial success in the process. The band’s enduring popularity was attested to during their most recent reformation, in 2007; a twenty-date tour of the UK and Europe saw them packing out stadiums, with a free concert in Rome attracting half a million people to the city’s ancient Circus Maximus. A stunning, intricate stage show finally did some of their classics some justice, years and in some cases decades after many of them were recorded, and proved that the influence that Genesis have had on rock music since has by no means passed the public by; they’re currently officially on hiatus rather than disbanded again, so watch this space - even if Collins claims to have retired from the music business.

Great to be going to see them in Birmingham in December. It’s been far too long. Great also to see that after so many years of inactivity they have to put on double the shows.

Turn It On Again: Genesis Opens 2021 North American Tour

genesis band tour

Genesis’ Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins in Chicago, Nov. 15, 2021

Genesis began the North American edition of their long-awaited reunion tour on November 15, 2021, with opening night of their “The Last Domino?” tour at the United Center in Chicago, Ill. The audience was treated to a mix of hits and album cuts, and the spectacular light show that has always been one of the band’s live hallmarks.

The band, who had slimmed down to the threesome of Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks all the way back in 1977, had abruptly ended the U.K. edition after their Oct. 7 performance in Glasgow when they announced that at least one member of the touring band had tested positive for Covid-19. (Rutherford later told USA Today that it was him.) (Those shows have since been moved to 2022.) Prior to the U.K. tour, the group hadn’t performed live together since 2007. The North American edition was announced on April 29, 2021.

Due to severe issues with his back, Collins, born January 30, 1951, is no longer able to drum. (His percussion playing is limited to the tambourine.) He has also dealt with hip issues in recent years and now sits center stage. The trio are joined on this tour by Collins’ son, Nic, who has filled in for his father behind the kit during his recent solo tours. (The younger Collins turned 20 on April 21.) Longtime Genesis touring band member, Daryl Stuermer, returns on guitar and bass. Also on hand are Daniel Pearce on backing vocals and percussion, and Patrick Smyth on backing vocals and tambourine.

On opening night, the 23-song  setlist  was almost identical to those performed on the U.K. tour. (They mirror many of the songs on the group’s new compilation, also called The Last Domino , with tracks such as “Carpet Crawlers” and “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway” dating back to 1974, their final album with their original frontman, Peter Gabriel.) Watch several clips below. (Warning: The clips are great though you’ll have to put up with singing by a nearby audience member.)

Watch them take the stage and perform the opening numbers, “Behind the Lines” / “Duke’s End” and “Turn It On Again”

The setlist features several choice album cuts.

Watch them perform “Home By the Sea” and “Second Home By the Sea”

The title cut from 1974’s The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is performed as part of a mini acoustic set.

The group performed 1980’s hit single “Misunderstanding” for the first time since 1984.

Watch Collins introduce the band, followed by “Misunderstanding” plus Banks’ showcase on “Firth of Fifth” and “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)”

Following Collins’ interaction with the crowd, 1986’s “Domino” from the  Invisible Touch album was a highlight.

The 21 shows are the first time in 14 years that the band has visited North America, when they reunited for 2007’s Turn It On Again tour.

Next up: “Throwing It All Away”

Watch them close out the main set with two favorites

Watch the evening’s first encore, “I Can’t Dance”

The concert closed with “Carpet Crawlers,” also from Gabriel’s 1974 swan song with the band.

Thanks to Philippe Lopez for the outstanding videos.

Steve Hackett on Phil Collins, why he left Genesis and what inspires his new music

genesis band tour

Steve Hackett was 20 when he got the call from Peter Gabriel responding to an advertisement the aspiring guitarist had placed in the pages of Melody Maker seeking "receptive musicians, determined to drive beyond existing stagnant music forms."

That phone call changed not only Hackett’s life but the trajectory of Genesis, who went on to record some of the most beloved albums in the history of progressive rock, including “Foxtrot,” “Selling England by the Pound” and “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,” with Hackett on guitar.

It’s been 47 years since Hackett parted ways with Genesis, but he’s been reconnecting with their legacy quite frequently since the 1996 release of “Genesis Revisited,” a tribute to his tenure in the group (1971-1977).

Steve Hackett 'keeping the museum doors open' with Genesis Revisited

The tour that plays Phoenix on Saturday, April 13, features Hackett revisiting “Foxtrot” while also showcasing the highlights of “The Circus and the Nightwhale,” a solo album he released in February.

“I’m keeping the museum doors open in the revisited sense of Genesis,” he says, “but also doing new stuff to keep it vital so I don't entirely pension myself off into a glorious past with all those lovely exhibits, beautiful though they are but they are of a certain time-warp value.”

The past factors heavily into Hackett’s new release, where details of his life intertwine with the tale of a fictional character named Travla.

“I call it a narrative,” Hackett says of the new album. “Other people have used the term concept album. That's OK. I don't mind.”

New Hackett album inspired by autobiography 'A Genesis in My Bed'

The idea was born out of conversations with his wife, Jo, who co-wrote a lot of the songs and came up with the album title, and followed the writing of 2020’s “A Genesis in My Bed,” Hackett’s autobiography.

“So there was an autobiography, and this is a kind of companion piece,” he says.

The album opens on a flashback to the sounds of 1950, using actual recordings of BBC radio broadcasts, newsreels of the day and assorted sound effects, from sirens to a baby crying.

Hackett was born in 1950.

“I really wanted to convey that feeling of just how beleaguered London was with the kind of lyrics I was coming up with at the time, the idea of playing on bomb sites, to try and create the atmosphere of a heavily populated London in postwar recovery,” Hackett says.

“So you get a very retro start to the album as it moves through various sequences that paint the picture of 1950 and life remaining pretty much the same for much of the next 10 years until electric guitars started to take over from steam trains and Auntie BBC was being superseded by pirate radio in this country.”

To Hackett, pirate radio was a welcome escape from the “heavily regulated regime-based attempt at not so much entertainment as a way to educate you.”

The postwar BBC was all about control, he says.

“When you hear what goes on in China, the kind of music they play to keep workers productive in factories, this is pretty much what you were hearing in England, everyone marching in step and the idea of a very, very heavily controlled world.”

The rise of Elvis and the band that made Hackett want to play guitar

Growing up in that environment made rock ‘n’ roll feel especially liberating.

“By the time Elvis Presley came along, he's not even singing proper English,” Hackett says. “You ain't nothin’ but. Straightaway, it set the hackles rising on our controllers and our betters."

"Suddenly, the old guard were being swept away and people were expressing themselves in what might be considered a rudimentary fashion, but we realized there was a sophistication to it. ‘I ain't never did no wrong’ is never gonna fly in English class. But it's perfectly acceptable with the Southern charm of Elvis, right?”

It was a British group, the Shadows, that made Hackett want to play guitar.

“When I was 9, I bought my first electric guitar record,” Hackett says.

“It was the Shadows playing 'Man of Mystery.' It had a compelling descending riff and melody. There was something dark and dangerous about it, something spylike, not a million miles away from the James Bond theme. Something mysterious. Minor key. Relentless. And it contained a sort of early freakout section. I found it a bit too much. Now, of course, it sounds quite tame.”

Hackett was intrigued to learn that Brian Eno had also bought his first record at 9.

“Interesting, isn't it?” he says. “When you're 9, you're on the cusp of something. You're starting to make your own decisions. You aren't just buying presents for other people or guns to blow up your imaginary world. You're thinking about something else that's vastly more creative. And those electric guitar salvos don't actually harm anyone. The only violence that's done is arguably to the ears.”

He’s surprised his ears survived the sonic revolution of his youth.

“When I was a kid, before we'd heard about headphones, I’d be lying on the carpet sticking my ear as close as possible to the speaker on the record player and turning up the treble because young kids love treble,” Hackett recalls, with a laugh. “I've got no right to have any hearing left at all by now. But I do.”

Song on Steve Hackett's album inspired by his frustration with Genesis

One song on the album, “Get Me Out” was inspired by the frustration he felt in Genesis as things were coming to a head.

“There’s a lot of anger in that song,” Hackett says. “A lot of frustration. It's just got that feeling.”

He compares one section to the “Perry Mason” theme.

“I was frightened by that theme song as a child,” he says. “I found it extremely threatening, the idea that there was this sort of murderer's theme. But I was intrigued by it as well and I realized it was the perfect evocation of noir music for black-and-white film, the way the colors are compressed, and the dissonant harmonies of that very catchy tune that's kind of bluesy, kind of jazzy and spooky as hell.”

When Phil Collins told him, 'We're about to influence each other'

Hackett has fond memories of his early days in Genesis.

“I wasn't a founding member of the band, but I was able to shape it,” he says.

“As Phil Collins said when I first met him, 'We're about to influence each other.’ I hadn't really been aware of working in a group where people were invited to share in the writing process and, indeed, influenced each other. So that was a very pleasant surprise. And I enjoyed it very much.”

He recalls being “heavily criticized” within the group, which would become a “very claustrophobic” situation after the release of his first solo album, “Voyage of the Acolyte,” a 1975 release that featured contributions from Collins and Genesis bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford.

“Once I'd done that, my position in the group was threatened,” Hackett says. “I was accused of not giving everything to the band.

"And I countered with, 'Well, yes, but I've got no guarantees that my songs will be done by the band, so what do you expect?’ I was told I had to make a decision, that I would have no guarantee of anything being done by the band, but also, I should not be able to record as a solo artist outside the band.”

Why Hackett had to quit 'the world's arguably greatest band'

So Hackett quit.

“I wasn't prepared to have stillborn brain children ad infinitum,” he says. “I had ideas. I needed to say them and if that meant that I had to leave the world's arguably greatest band at that time, I was prepared to do so, because those ideas were precious to me and are now.”

Despite the anger he once felt, he likes revisiting the work they created.

“I'm very proud of a lot of the stuff I sweated blood for with Genesis back in the day,” he says. “I love the music that we wrote together. I was able to shape it and write some of it, and in other cases, be the kind of midwife or the overseer of it.”

He feels he pushed the band to greater heights.

“I always felt that Genesis needed a kind of conceptual brain to drive it beyond their comfort zone so that we would come up with something that surprised ourselves rather than just a series of quasi-folk-music vignettes,” he says.

“I wanted the band to have a much harder edge than that, to be able to sound like an orchestra, which we managed to do, from time to time, with the Mellotron and then the synth.”

'Foxtrot' was part of what Hackett considers 'the perfect era of Genesis'

“Foxtrot” is one of those albums that captures Genesis at what Hackett believes to be their all-time peak.

“The perfect era of Genesis is when there's a five-piece that features Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and myself,” he says.

“'Foxtrot' and 'Selling England By the Pound’ reflect the time when John Lennon said we were one of the bands he was interested in and in another interview, said he considered Genesis to be true sons of the Beatles. So I'm very proud of that. There isn't really a weak track on 'Foxtrot' or 'Selling England By the Pound.'”

Other albums had “amazing tracks,” he says, but those two represent what he would call “the golden era.”

It’s his feeling that they were still sorting it out on “Nursery Cryme,” their first release with Hackett on guitar.

“I think 'Nursery Cryme' gave us a chance to get to know each other and put it together and pool the ideas over an idyllic British summer in a country retreat, where we were living and working together,” Hackett says.

“That certainly seemed like an incredible time for me. There was something about the rehearsal facility that went with the particular house we were working in. There was a PA setup. And there was reverb on the PA. So certain things sound better in that sort of live rehearsal space than they actually did on the record. I don't think we were gifted enough producers to be able to explain what we actually wanted.”

Hackett and his bandmates didn’t necessarily talk about how they were hoping things would go on “Foxtrot.” They just let the music take them there.

“I don't think any of the guys in the band were great conversationalists,” he says.

“Least of all me. So we couldn't really engage each other with what we were thinking, but because it encompassed so many styles, from early music to God knows what, it was this pan-genre approach, this inclusive music.

"I think the only thing that was really off-limits was anything that required the pentatonic or blues scale. If you presented that to Genesis, you were accused of trying to copy Deep Purple.”

Watch Genesis Play ‘Tonight Tonight Tonight’ at Final Tour Kickoff

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Genesis played their first concert of 2022 Monday night at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin, Germany. It’s the start of a 14-show European run that the group says will be the last gigs they’ll ever play.

“When we do the final show next year, that will be it,” keyboardist Tony Banks told USA Today in September 2021. “So I’d say if you want to see Genesis, don’t put it off ‘til the next one. We’re not like the [Rolling] Stones.”

The setlist was identical to the one they played last year, mixing hits like “I Can’t Dance,” “That’s All,” and “Land of Confusion” with fan favorites like “Duchess” and Domino” and a handful of tunes from the Peter Gabriel era like “I Know What I Like,” “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,” and “The Carpet Crawlers.”

Here’s a fan-shot video of “Tonight Tonight Tonight” and “Invisible Touch.” (As has been the case since 1992, they only play the first half of “Tonight Tonight Tonight.” They haven’t done the full song since the Invisible Touch tour of 1986/87.)

The Last Domino? tour hit arenas in America late last year, but the band never went anywhere further west than Chicago. That meant much of the country didn’t get near a Genesis show. They have a nice consolation prize coming in a few weeks when prog-era guitarist Steve Hackett brings his Genesis Revisited tour to North America for an extensive run of shows that’ll feature a complete performance of the band’s 1977 double live album Seconds Out at every stop.

The Genesis tour wraps up on March 26th at the 02 Arena in London. They reserve the right to change their mind and keep touring, especially since they haven’t announced a single show in Italy where they’ve enjoyed an enormous audience for over 50 years. But Phil Collins has significant health issues and is probably anxious to wrap up his touring career. That will be a sad day for Genesis fans, but at least he gathered up the strength for this last run.

Peso Pluma addresses narcocorrido culture during Coachella set, pays homage to Mexican music artists

genesis band tour

Peso Pluma , the música Mexicana artist from Guadalajara who's skyrocketed to global fame, played a lively, frenetic set — with guest appearances from Becky G and Arcángel among others — during his Friday performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival .

During his set, the 24-year-old also alluded to the criticism aimed at his music's occasional references to drug trafficking and gun violence, also known as narcocorridos. Mexican officials, including the country's president, have criticized the music's themes for what they see as glorifying drug culture. The "LADY GAGA" singer's bravado has also drawn threats from Mexican cartels, including one in Tijuana last fall that caused Peso Pluma to cancel a concert there .

Peso Pluma made references to the criticism throughout his theatrical set, which opened with a narrated video playing old TV news clips critical of Mexican drug culture. The set reached a frenzied peak during "PRC," as the screens on stage displayed a range of news articles related to Peso Pluma and, more broadly, the intersection of music and drug culture.

INTERVIEW: Peso Pluma knows you know who he is. How the Grammy winner put Mexican music on the map.

While Peso Pluma referenced the ongoing discourse, he also paid homage to those who came before him in the corridos genre, with a video showing a litany of past and present Mexican artists. Paired with Peso Pluma’s shouts during the show — "¡Que vivan los corridos! ¡Que viva Mexico!" — the tribute reminded the large crowd that many artists paved the way for him to be on the Coachella stage.

Here's what else stood out from his Friday night set.

A strong showing from Peso Pluma's live band

Peso Pluma brought his signature corridos tumbados — a long-standing form of folksy, guitar ballads in Mexico, mixed with modern trap and hip-hop influences — to Coachella, though it was really his live band that set the tone, starting with a violin solo for his opening song, "Rubicon," from his 2023 album, "Génesis."

The band, replete with an impressive array of bass horns, trumpets and guitars, hit plenty of high notes and brought enthusiasm that only amplified Peso Pluma’s fun as the figurative bandleader, as he danced around the stage in his sleeveless white outfit.

'It was literally sonic chaos': Grimes apologizes for 'technical issues' during Coachella set

Becky G, Arcángel, more make surprise Coachella appearances during Peso Pluma's set

As one of the biggest names in music right now, it was no surprise that Peso Pluma had a surprise guest (or four) up his sleeve for his Friday night set at Coachella. He began his surprises with an appearance from Becky G, who returned the favor after Peso Pluma appeared at her set last year, with the duo playing their 2023 song, "Chanel."

INTERVIEW: Becky G says this 'Esquinas' song makes her 'bawl my eyes out' every time she sings it

Peso Pluma then brought out his frequent collaborator Junior H, with the two playing their song, "El Azul," and he later welcomed Santa Fe Klan, a Mexican rapper slated to deliver his own set at Coachella on Saturday.

The surprises concluded with an appearance from Argentinian rapper Arcángel for a debut performance of their song, "PESO COMPLETO," which they released shortly before the festival began.
