Ready to Unlock Seattle’s Haunted Secrets?

Seattle has ghost stories aplenty, from the original owners of the land to the many prospectors killed for their nuggets of Yukon Gold, Seattle has been a restless place for the living and the dead.

Seattle was started as a religious settlement by a group of teetotal devout Christians , before that the Suquamish and Duwamish Native Americans had happily looked after the place for 10,000 years or so.

Seattle Ghosts tour starts from the Four Seasons Hotel and winds up back there after a mile and 8 spooky tales for the standard tour. The extended tour adds another 30 mins and around a half-mile of walking to 4 extra scares! We’ll cover the modern-day cult that started in Seattle, and left a tell-tale sign there, but ended with the largest mass suicide in US history, 39 people drunk applesauce and barbiturates believing it would allow them to hitch a ride aboard a comet to the promised land.

This insightful, 60-minute or 90-minute exploration of Seattle’s wildest haunts will keep you hooked from the very first moment. Each ghost story is based on extensive historical research and authentic, verified ghost sightings.

Want a Truly History-Based Experience?

Curious about the underlying stories behind Seattle’s ghosts? Finally, you’ll uncover the fascinating layers of Seattle’s history. You’ll meet Chief Seattle’s daughter, Kiksoblu, who still haunts Pike Place Market, daring undertakers who gambled on Seattle’s high death tolls, and the 100 Victorian women imported to Seattle from Boston to balance the male-female population. This fact-based ghost tour educates, captivates, and keeps you wanting more.

Seattle has a remarkable history with serial killers, starting with ‘Dr.’ Linda Hazzard, not really a doctor, she offered a fasting cure that was rumored to cure all manner of ailments, from general malaise to several kinds of Dropsy. Hazzard’s often lethal treatments targeted desperate people who had run out of options in Western medicine. She also convinced several of her delirious clients to sign over their estates to her and her partner!

Later on, in Seattle’s sordid history, more modern serial killers like Ted Bundy lived here. Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer, prowled Seattle’s streets searching for his 49 confirmed victims from the edges of society; he was a hideous and deranged monster, evil to his core.

With so many tours and activities to choose from Seattle, how do you choose which ones to book?

7 reasons guests should go on the seattle ghosts tour.

An Authentic Ghost Tour Based on Facts from history

Even if we didn’t mention a single ghost Seattle is a fascinating place, with a religious start, a rough and ready early history, and a collaborative and progressive recent history. This rich tapestry of history gives these ghost stories a secure standing in time, and the ghost stories bring the historical eras to life in a grim and fascinating way.

Like the cobblestones on the haunted Post Alley, they were ballast in ships from San Francisco, where the rubble from the earthquake was loaded into ships to be taken away. The stones arrived with their tragic energy just after the 1904 Earthquake that flattened much of the city.

We guarantee you will be entertained, informed and just a little bit scared by the stories of horror and haunting that leap out of the pages of the history books.

Entertaining, with a historical twist

Your guides are down to earth local experts, specially trained and deeply involved in the tour. Each adds their personal touch, their favorite stories, and their unique sense of humor. When you have to explain why outside the Market Theatre there is a wall caked in inches of used gum , you can only wonder at the thoughts that go through people’s minds. The City of Seattle at one time removed over a metric ton of gum from the famous gum wall.

Even in the depths of human tragedy and the eternal suffering of ghosts, your tour guides have to keep their sense of humor, and we look forward to seeing smiles on your face as we enlighten and entertain.

Entertainment for everyone

We don’t want to cause any sleepless (In Seattle) nights, especially for any younger tour members, but we do want to give you spooky stories to remember for years to come. A perfect souvenir of your time in Seattle. They say an experience is better than an object, and this experience will stay with your whole group, whenever you think of Seattle, you will think Ghosts!

While standing at Pike Place Market, you’ll hear about the hundreds of empty stalls that were left after 110,000 Japanese Americans were interred in camps for the duration of the Second World War, and the huge influence they had on the culture of Seattle.

Learn New Stories about the Rain capital of the northwest

Perhaps as a young person in the countryside, one might be paid for collecting Varmint. Farmers, landowners, or even the State would reward you for taking away unwanted visitors for helping rid the fields and skies of pests, collecting a nickel for a rat, or a dollar for a Racoon say.

In Seattle, at the turn of the last century, the same system was employed by the City of Seattle, except the unwanted pest was human corpses. The rough and dirty town had a very high mortality rate, form disease, violence, and too much of everything. Undertakers would be paid $50 to remove corpses from the streets, something the residents understandably did not take kindly to. We will question whether, like Varmint hunters, the undertakers might have been a little too enterprising in their pursuit of the bounties?

Even if you are a Non-Believer – fun is guaranteed.

Ghosts appear and respond more to the young, and animals, who don’t have the barriers of disbelief and denial that most adults do. Both ends of the spectrum of believers in the supernatural are welcome on the Seattle Terrors tours. Your guides won’t try and change your mind either way, but we do guarantee that whatever your attitude to ghosts, you will have a good and memorable tour through the spooky streets of Seattle.

It is hard not to believe that the ghost of Kikisoblu , daughter of the Duwamish people’s Chief when Seattle was just getting going, still haunts the Pike Place Market. In her trademark red cape, selling her trinkets and posing for photographs, just like she did after the rest of her tribe was forced to move to reservations away from their ancestral lands. She has been outfoxing police officers and tourists ever since.

In Town and Not Sure of What to Do.

Seattle has many ways to occupy your days. Lots of them are food-related Seattle dogs, Oysters, or Chowder fries , perhaps? Or the SAM, Seattle art Museum , but that closes at 5 pm… To really get the most out of your time in Seattle, you should really consider the Seattle Terrors walking tour, just after dinner, and before the night really kicks off.

Your tour will take you to the places you really should know about in Seattle, but instead of just going there and seeing the nice buildings, we’ll give you the historical scoop and make those facts stick with stories of the resident ghosts and ghouls.

A Memorable Experience.

It’s the ghosts that make Seattle memorable, but as well as hearing the scary ghost tales you also get the history of this fascinating city. For example, the Butterworth & Sons Mortuary on busy First Avenue was a state of the art shop and factory for disposing of the dead. Including the first corpse elevator on the West Coast. The mortuary backs onto Post Alley, where corpses would be piled up after a particularly violent night in Seattle.  The Alley also has its own ghost story. Join the tour to find out her story.

Welcome to Seattle Ghosts

Echoes of a violent past in the emerald city .

Beneath the world-famous Space Needle and Pike’s Place Market, behind the moody music scene and the booming breweries are ancient burial grounds and a past of violence and tragedy. Discover the brutality that built Rain City and the violence that still lingers in the shadows.

Seattle is a city of unfinished business and once it’s gotten ahold of you, it will never let go. The city was founded by a group of white settlers on a mission to create a Christian utopia and their vision was never realized. To establish their settlement, they made treaties with local Native American tribes that weren’t fully honored. Prospectors flocked to the area only to have dreams of fortune left unfulfilled.

Seattle is filled with chilling stories of ghosts and hauntings that date back as far as the original Native American tribes that settled in this state.

It’s no wonder the dead linger in the shadows of Cascadia City, watching the living and pining for validation, fortune, and fame. Cursed burial grounds and a violent past have left a legacy of restless spirits that prowl in the night, seeking justice, vengeance, and revenge.

Get ready to visit some of Seattle’s most haunted buildings and places that still resonate with violence, greed, betrayal, and murder. Underneath dark clouds and never-ending rain showers is a city built on the blood of prospectors, prostitutes, and preachers with the echoes of their violent deeds left behind for eternity.

WHAT WILL I SEE?

Discover why native american history lingers in seattle.

Before Seattle was the moody, artistic, and culinary hotspot it is today, the land was home to the Coast Salish Native American tribes. The seeds of Seattle were settled in the winter of 1851 when Arthur Denny and a group of 22 white men declared it would be the home of their new Christian utopia. While all was peaceful for a while between the local tribes and Denny’s men, small skirmishes turned into a brief war, forever scarring the land with innocent blood and tragic death.

Discover chilling and true accounts of ghosts that stalk ancient Native American burial grounds under popular Seattle tourist attractions, places where the disrupted graves of the dead have led to restless spirits stalking the night. Hear spine-tingling stories of encountering Kikisoblu, the daughter of a local chief whose spirit still walks the streets of Pikes Place in her red shawl.

As tensions escalated between local Native Americans and Denny’s growing settlement, it was Kikisoblu’s father Chief Sealth who stepped in to protect white settlers from angry tribesmen. His protection was so valuable that the settlers named their new town after the chief, despite his desperate pleas for them not to. Uttering the name of the deceased after they are dead was taboo in his culture because it disturbed the dead’s peaceful rest.

Unearth bone-chilling stories of Chief Sealth and other tribesmen who cannot rest because their names keep being uttered by the living, the annoyed and vengeful souls who want nothing more than to find a peace the living won’t allow them to attain .

A Serial Killer’s Paradise

Seattle has become a famous stalking ground for serial killers like Ted Bundy and Gary Ridgway, both of whom left trails of brutalized victims across the city. And they’re not the only monsters who have roamed the Seattle night, hunting for the innocent. The victims they’ve left behind also haunt buildings and shops, caught in an everlasting search for justice and peace.

Linda Hazzard was a self-proclaimed doctor who may still haunt the LaSalle Hotel, where she abused victims in a stringent program billed as a gateway to health but resulted in death. Linda would entice victims into her program, weaken their minds and bodies and then convince them to sign over all assets. Then she would let her victims die. Linda Hazzard inherited her victims’ assets, and rumor has it her property inherited their spirits.

Uncover hair-raising true accounts of shadow figures that haunt the streets and sidewalks near LaSalle Hotel, including one that beckons you to follow it straight to the front door of LaSalle.

Disturbed Burial Grounds Created Restless Spirits

Native American burial grounds aren’t the only cemeteries that lie underneath the streets of Seattle. Many small cemeteries have been moved over the years, or just built over as Seattle’s population swelled. Spirits who were laid to rest in those grounds have been disturbed and while their bodies were relocated, many ghosts still stalk the night looking for their lost bodies.

One of those burial grounds was once under the Moore Theater, one of Seattle’s most famous entertainment venues and hotels. Settlers were buried here from 1853 to 1860 and most of the bodies were relocated a couple of decades later.

Discover why apparitions and phantom cigar smoke still haunt the Moore Theater, as well as disembodied voices and mysterious figures watching in the night. Hear bone-chilling stories of an unfinished seance that could have opened a portal to the other side, one that was never closed.

After the Moore Theater was built, it was discovered the land was also home to a Native American burial ground. Grave robbers flocked to the area to loot any graves they could find and disturbed many burial plots in the process. These restless spirits mingle with the unearthly and paranormal forces in the Moore Theater and Hotel, ensuring every step you take near this building will be watched by ghostly eyes.

WHY IS SEATTLE SO HAUNTED?

Unfinished business ties souls to seattle.

Life was violent during Seattle’s early days. To fund his vision of a pure and perfect utopia, Denny turned to the surrounding natural resources and began shipping lumber out of the area and to San Francisco. This attracted a population of workers in direct conflict with Denny’s vision, rough sailors, hard-boiled lumberjacks, and later, Gold Rush prospectors, who all lived in a world of human vices Denny despised.

Visit the dens of sin that evolved to accommodate Seattle’s rough and renegade population and unearth bone-chilling stories of the ghosts they left behind. See the Can Can cantina, where sex workers endured hard lives that came to miserable ends and mysterious burlesque dancers have disappeared in the middle of their acts.

Seattle Ghosts will take you on a tour of the bloody history that built Cloud City and introduce you to a blurry world of mystery where the echoes of rape murder and violence still echo in the streets and victims’ ghosts still search for revenge.

Portals Of Mass Suicide Linger In The Streets

While America’s largest mass suicide event took place in San Diego, there is a piece of the street in Pikes Place that directly ties the souls of the victims to Seattle.

In 1997, members of the Heaven’s Gate cult poisoned themselves in San Diego in an effort to cleanse themselves of human attachments and ascend to the next level of existence. Before the suicide event, one of the cult’s organizers bought a tile during a Pike’s Place Market fundraising campaign in the name of Heaven’s Gate. And for some reason, there seems to be a connection between that tile and ghosts of cult members who voluntarily ended their lives in pursuit of perfection.

Discover the Heaven’s Gate tile and unearth chilling stories of those who have stood near the tile and heard the echoes of Heaven’s Gate, calling from beyond the grave.

Why Seattle’s Past Continues To Be Resurrected

While Seattle is popular for coffee, culture, music, and food, it was built on blood, greed, savagery, and violence. Even when the sun does pop through the clouds in one of America’s rainiest cities, you’ll find darkness still lingers in the corners and alleyways of this busy Sea-Town.

Visit popular tourist attractions like Pike’s Place Market on our haunted walking tour and discover a place where the afterlife mingles with the living and the past is just a breath away from the present.

Preview The Most Haunted Locations In Seattle

Post alley/gum wall.

In Pike Place Market, just outside of Post Alley, is the infamous Gum Wall, covered in chewing gum. It began with a tradition of theatergoers using gum to stick a penny to the wall for good luck. Soon the penny dropped, but the gum remained.

Next to the gum wall in Post Alley, many ghosts still linger to this day. There’s Frank, an elderly and tall ghost who greets people by name outside the bathroom of a Post Alley club. Then there’s Ghost Alley Espresso, which claims to have the ghost of Arthur Goodwin, one of Pike Place Market’s first managers.

Butterworth Building

The Butterworth Building was originally a mortuary, which sets the stage for years of lingering souls on site. It was the city’s first place for “comprehensive death-related services,” offering everything from coffins to corpse retrieval.

Now Kell’s Irish Pub is a favorite haunt for the haunts. Many guests have reported seeing ghosts in the entrance, where the morticians once kept their dead bodies.

Moore Theatre

Many people say the Moore Theatre is the most haunted place in the city — so much so that many ghost hunters have made their way over the Pacific Northwest just to investigate.

An old theatre built in 1907 was the city’s first entertainment venue. Many people rumor that this is the place where Kurt Cobain overdosed and died. Others say Moore himself still roams the theatre with some early actresses who once graced the stage.

The Scariest Ghost Tours in Seattle

TripSavvy / Kathleen Messmer

Ghost tours are a great way to get to know Seattle—along the way, you’ll learn some local history, but with a twist. Sure, it’s interesting to hear stories of Chief Seattle or pioneers coming out West for the railroad, but history is always a little more interesting with some spice!

While most local ghost tours go all year round, they can be especially fun to do in October near Halloween, when tales of local haunts fit nicely into the general mood of the month. However, book ghost tours in October plenty in advance as they often sell out weeks in advance.

More to do in October: Haunted Houses | Halloween Parties | Corn Mazes and Pumpkin Patches | Trick or Treating in Seattle

Spooked in Seattle

Spooked in Seattle aims to keep it real—meaning the tales of hauntings and ghosts shared on its tours are not fabricated just to make a good ghost tour. The company offers several tours as well as ghost hunts, all led by paranormal investigators. Walking tours take you around Pioneer Square, one of the oldest areas of the city, or you can kick things up a notch and join the Pioneer Square Haunted Pub Tour. Ghost hunts, which encourage you to bring along your own recording equipment, tour either the USS Turner Joy in Bremerton or the Seattle Underground. If you don't wish to join a group tour, you can also book private tours. Reservations are required. The company also hosts special events ranging from movies to readings with a medium at their Death Museum.

Market Ghost Tour

Pike Place Market is a popular destination with both tourists and locals, but it's also a historical site—the oldest farmer's market in the country—an even the land on which the market is located has a long history. The 75-minute Market Ghost Tour explores the buildings and spaces of the market and it does so at night fall, for maximum effect. It's an especially good ghost tour for skeptics. Even if you're a non-believer, the historical aspects of this tour will give any participant a new perspective on the market. In late October, you can join a special Halloween Market Ghost Tour. Private tours are also available. Reservations are not required, but you can purchase tickets online ahead of time.

Private Eye on Seattle

If you don't prefer a walking tour or just really want to see as much of Seattle's haunted history as possible, Private Eye on Seattle is the company for you. All tours are done by shuttle, cover sights located all around Seattle, and involve little walking. The Haunted Happenings Tour is Seattle's oldest ghost tour. It lasts 2.5 to 3 hours and visits several areas of the city. Spirits of Seattle is another 3-hour tour that specializes in Capitol Hill, Belltown, Pike Place Market and downtown. Private Eye on Seattle also offers true crime tours. Reservations in advance are required.

Underground Paranormal Experience

The Seattle Underground Tour is already inherently creepy with its dimly lit spaces, dusty storefronts and abandoned nature. The Underground Paranormal Experience kicks this up a notch with a lot fewer lights in the tunnels underneath the city as well as ghost hunting equipment so you can see for yourself what might lurk in the darkness. This tour is offered select evenings throughout the week during the year as well as on Halloween. Reservations highly recommended.

Tacoma Ghost Tours

Tacoma Ghost Tours lets you delve into the haunted history of Seattle's southern neighbor. There are two tours options—a one-hour tour of Stadium District, known as the location of Stadium High School, which looks like a castle; and a 1.5-hour tour of downtown Tacoma, including Antique Row and the Theater District. Purchase tickets in advance online.

Underground Tour, Bill Speidel’s

Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour is Seattle’s most unusual attraction, a humorous stroll through intriguing subterranean storefronts and sidewalks entombed when the city rebuilt on top of itself after the Great Fire of 1889. The 75-minute guided walking tour begins beneath Doc Maynard’s Public House, then spills into historic Pioneer Square, Seattle’s birthplace, before plunging underground for an exclusive, time-capsule view of the buried city. It’s the only way to tour the interconnecting tunnels of the world-famous Seattle Underground—don’t be fooled by imposters. All the while, tour guides regale you with sidesplitting stories our pioneers didn’t want you to hear. It’s history with punch lines! Tickets available in advance, online at undergroundtour.com and by phone at (206) 682-4646, or at our ticket counter at 614 First Avenue, in Pioneer Place Park, Pioneer Square.

Called mammoth for a reason, this labyrinthine network of caves within Mammoth Cave National Park has more than 405 miles (652km) of mapped passages, making it the longest system in the world. And now a team of researchers has discovered eight more previously unknown miles (13km) of underground passages. Visitors can explore 10 miles (16km) of tunnels on a guided hike. The formations are staggering – don't miss Frozen Niagara which looks just like a waterfall sculpted out of rock.
