Find fun at the capital with a Berlin vacation
Berlin is the thrilling capital of Germany, where you'll find all sorts of fun things to do. Museums are all over town, including some that offer a focus on oddly-specific topics like video games. The theater productions in Berlin are particularly impressive, but if you're looking to look to the future rather than embrace tradition, you can visit the high-tech Sony Center with its unique shops, restaurants, and cinemas.
Taste the wonder of Frankfurt vacation packages
Frankfurt is best known for its frankfurters, and their sausage recipes still play a major role in the city's identity. When you visit, you can try a wide variety of different sausage dishes, including some that have taken ideas from other cultures as well. Additionally, you'll find several impressive museums and historic sites to explore if you want to take a peek into the past.
Take a trip back in time on a Hamburg vacation
When you visit Hamburg, you'll probably find yourself drawn to the harbor area. This area is one of the most well-preserved historical spaces in the entire city, and you'll find shops and restaurants among the impressive sights as well. Local museums can offer valuable insight into the city's history and the shifts in culture that happened throughout the 20th century and beyond.
Enjoy the culture with Munich vacation packages
Munich is a city known for its traditional celebrations and master-crafted beer. Tradition and beer come together every year here for Oktoberfest, a festival so popular that it's replicated all over the world in areas with even mild Bavarian influences. Germany FAQ's
Located in the heart of Europe, Germany has historically been and still is politically, economically and culturally influential and the largest EU member state by population and economic output. Known around the world for the Oktoberfest, car brands, football, and beer, it is also leading the world in banking and insurance companies. The country is probably best known for its World War II history and the country`s more recent times when it was split into East and West, everybody is familiar with the Berlin Wall, which came down about 30 years ago. There`s is a load of culture, rich history and natural beauty that makes Germany a famous tourist destination for so many.
Germany is a beautiful, varied country with an impressive culture and endless travel opportunities. It has deep forests, fairy-tale castles, and picture-perfect towns are something that you shouldn`t miss. The following destinations, with their impressive architecture and indisputable charm, are hands down the most beautiful places to visit in Germany. Berlin is one of the most interesting cities in Europe, and certainly the one that has changed the most in the last 20 years. Cologne is home to one of the most impressive cathedrals in the world with a thriving art scene and some of the most high-spirited locals. Nestled on the River Elbe, Germany`s second-largest metropolis, Hamburg , offers fascinating historical architecture, striking futuristic buildings and some of the best nightlife in Europe. It also has a treasure-packed historic center, and more bridges than any other city in the world. Germany`s most scenic drive, the Romantic Road , offers visitors the opportunity to explore the rich culture, charming scenery, and medieval character of this fantastic country. Running between Wurzburg and Fussen , it leads travelers through Bavarian Alps most stunning attractions, including the spectacular Neuschwanstein Castle, the baroque city of Würzburg, Rothenburg ob der tauber - the best preserved medieval town in the country, and the enchanting Pfaffenwinkel region, famous for its rolling countryside sprinkled with picturesque villages and pilgrimage churches. Add to all these some excellent beer, the most beautiful Christmas Markets, and an abundance of activities and you`ll soon wonder why in the world you haven’t visited Germany earlier.
Like all popular European destinations, Germany sees visitors throughout the year – rain, snow or shine. And all of these are a possibility depending on when you visit Germany. Every season in this country has its charm, as well as its pitfalls, so when to go depends on your travel type and what activities you`re interested in. Generally speaking, the best time to visit is during the `shoulder seasons` from March through May and from late October through November. The weather may be a bit chilly, but you`ll enjoy lower prices and fewer crowds. The summer months bring warm temperatures and lush landscape, but keep in mind, that it can get uncomfortably crowded. You will also need to be aware of the events and festivities that take place throughout the year that will bring in influx of tourist and increase in hotel rates. Here is an overview of Germany in all four seasons that will help you decide what`s the best time of year for you to visit. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit Germany .
We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.
There are many ways to explore Germany, depending on your itinerary and budget. Find out how you can best travel around the country from renting a car and driving down the Autobahn (one of the densest and best maintained highway networks on earth), to enjoying a relaxing train ride. All modes of transportation are up to a high modern standard. By Train: One of the best ways to discover Germany (and Europe at large) is by train. Deutsche Bahn or `DB`, the German railway system, is very well developed and reliable, and if you book tickets in advance (180 days before departure at the earliest) it can be surprisingly affordable. You can reach almost every city in Germany by train; not to mention that watching the German landscape stream by your window is a very relaxing and comfortable way to travel. Regional trains are now run by a variety of private operators as well as Deutsche Bahn subsidiaries, but they can all be booked through bahn.com . Long distance trains on the other hand are almost all run by Deutsche Bahn. Those few that aren`t have to be booked through the operating company. By Car: Germany has a world-famous network of excellent roads and Autobahn (motorway) with no toll or fees for cars. Although public transport in Germany is excellent, those who choose to drive will find the road network fast and efficient as well. Like most of Europe, Germany drives on the right-hand side. Check in advance on whether your non-German driving licence is valid in Germany. Otherwise, you may risk a heavy fine or up to one year in jail. For longer stays most foreign licenses are not valid no matter what your residence status is. If you plan on driving on a longer stay (several months or years) try getting a European drivers license that is usually valid throughout the European Union. Germany offers many scenic drives that will lead you past picturesque villages, medieval castles, and unspoiled countryside. From the Romantic Road to the Castle Road, from the Fairy Tale Road to the German Wine Route, are some of the roads best traveled in Germany. For more information about driving in Germany, consult our guide by clicking here Driving in Germany .
The currency of Germany is the Euro. US dollars are not accepted. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for euros upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at the airport and many locations throughout the major cities. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Germany .
English may be spoken at your hotel and in the tourist areas, but not everywhere. We suggest you get a good English-German guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

Originally built for King Ludwig II who only spent 11 nights in the castle before his death, it now enchants visitors aplenty. Our trip to Germany would not be complete without it.
See the remnants of the Berlin Wall
Once dividing the German capital both physically and politically, what remains of the 155 kilometre long Berlin Wall has been largely dressed in thought-provoking graffiti. Feel the emotion of our visit, celebrating its symbolic demolition in 1989 and commemorating this dark patch in German history.
Embrace the Bavarian rich beer brewing heritage
Governed by a set of 16th century rules that determine purity, beer brewing in Germany is a cultural art form. Peel back the layers of beer culture to gain a deeper understanding of its significance, as we visit some of the 1300 breweries found here.
Go up the iconic Berlin TV Tower for 360° views
The Berliner Fernsehturm, or Berlin TV Tower, once stood as a proud statement of communist power. With democracy in place, we will take a trip to the top of the capital’s TV Tower to soak up the sentiment of a united city, admiring 360-degree views from the observation deck found at a height of 203 meters.
Admire the beautiful Baroque building façades in Dresden
The rebirth of Dresden since the bombings of 1945 is a testament to the German spirit of resilience. Connect with the intricacies of Baroque architecture whilst stepping into a pace of life found in many of the country’s boutique cities.
Our top 5 things to do in Germany
When you explore Germany with Trafalgar, we'll connect you with Bavarian beer heritage, nostalgic castles, Baroque architecture and political complexities.
Stasi Museum
The blurred political history of Germany is uncovered within the stark walls of the Stasi Museum. Once the headquarters of East Germany’s Ministry for State Security, it now stands as a memorial and research centre. Germany tours are scarcely complete without a trip to Stasi.
Residenz Museum
Peel back the layers of German opulence with a step into the former home of Bavarian royalty. A well-timed visit to the Residenz Museum complex will see you watching a performance by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. On any other day, be awe-struck by the grandeur of the palace’s ten courtyards and 130 display rooms.
Oranienburg
Memorial & Museum Sachsenhausen
Visit a Nazi concentration camp and you will begin to understand the deeply moving stories of Germany's troubled historical past. Not for the faint of heart, Memorial & Museum Sachsenhausen in Oranienburg will walk you through a mortuary, execution trenches and prison cells. The enormity of suffering remains thick in the air.
Best museums in Germany
Packed with breathtaking moments and cultural significance, museum hopping is an important part of any trip to Germany. With Trafalgar, you'll step from the tumultuous past to the progressive present to understand the complete German story.
Best food in Germany
An indulgent sausage tour is hard to resist in Germany, particularly when washing wursts down with local beer. Trafalgar will guide you through the goodness of this meaty cuisine, always laden with condiments, always satisfying.
A simple pork sausage first steamed and then fried, it’s the lashings of curry ketchup that make currywurst unique. This fast food local favorite is enjoyed with hot potato chips and a local beer, while standing and engaging in a chat with some locals.Add an additional layer of curry powder for extra kick.
Slightly less indulgent than the currywurst, a weisswurst sausage is typically made of veal and pork and warmed in water without complete cooking or frying. Eat the near-raw weisswurst as a mid-morning snack served alongside warm pretzels.
Schweininshaxe
Roasted pork knuckle is an adored culinary dish found across Germany. Often left to marinate for around a week before being slowly roasted at low temperatures, Schweininshaxe is a labour of love. Appreciate yours over a leisurely meal lasting many hours.
What to pack for Germany
Otto Wolff’s guide to German food
Gelbwurst, rindswurst. Kartoffelpuffer, kartoffelkloesse. German food can be a mouthful before the dish has been served. The Wurst! By Otto Wolff will guide you through the very best of German cuisine.
An eye for fairytale architecture
Most sources claim that over 20,000 castles can be found across the hills of Germany. Allow this trip to inspire childhood nostalgia with its fairytale architecture.
Digital maps
It's always good to have a backup of digital maps on standby when you're out exploring in your own time. Download them prior to your trip so you can reach them even when your phone is offline.
Travel adaptor
Though many hotels will have adaptors available for use, being prepared with your own will ensure you're always charged and ready to go.
Traditional costume
Oktoberfest is not the only time that traditional dress could be called upon in Germany. Travelers looking to connect closer to the culture may like to pack the 19th century German attire of a Dirndl or lederhosen.

At the heart of Europe, monumental contemporary and historic events shape today’s Germany. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of the Beatles in Hamburg, the culture of the country is marked by its influential past and present. Imagine yourself exploring postcard-worthy castles such as Neuschwanstein or wandering through medieval cities such as Regensburg. From the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge to the plains of the north, the range of Germany’s landscapes will capture your heart. Perhaps you’ll also indulge your taste buds as you sample the delicious Marzipan sweet treats of the Hanseatic port of Lubeck, which have been produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, know that a stein of German beer or a glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are both a worthy compliment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveler anticipates.

Destination must-see's, oberammergau:.
The tiny Bavarian village of Oberammergau is straight from the pages of a storybook. You’ll find countless traditional, timbered houses with colorful murals depicting everything from religious scenes to fairy tales. Every 10 years, travelers flock from all over the world to see the city’s famous Passion Play. It all began in 1634 when villagers promised to perform a play depicting the life and death of Jesus Christ every ten years if God would spare them from the Bubonic Plague. No one fell victim to the Plague after that. The tradition continues today, and will be performed in 2022. To join the cast, you must have been born in Oberammergau or have lived in the town for no less than 20 years. This epic play, though performed in German, transcends language barriers and is a bucket list item for many travelers.

Christmas Markets:
Before Christmas was ever celebrated, Germany had special winter markets. These markets were only open for a day or two in early winter to stock up on food and supplies to hold them over in the cold months. With time the markets expanded and craftspeople set up stands selling items often given during the holidays. What makes these markets special and unique compared to other holiday shopping is the atmosphere and quality. While walking the German streets you smell the aroma of mulled wine and baked apples with festive lights and historic buildings. You will not find mass-produced items here, but real quality craftwork.
Berlin and the Wall:
After World War II, Germany separated into two countries, with the east as communist and the west as democratic. As the capital of Germany, Berlin became the center of this divided nation, constructing a wall to contain the segregation. Before the wall was built, citizens in East Germany had begun to move to West Germany to avoid communist rule. After hordes of people began leaving the East, the leaders constructed a wall overnight, shocking the community. Despite initial beliefs, the country was not reunited for some time and the Berlin Wall stayed up for 28 years. Its fall, which happened in 1989, was something that was celebrated all around the world.
Destination Must-Do's
German beer gained its popularity due to the outcome of the strict process it undergoes following the Purity law. Made of water, hops and barley malt, German beer tastes much better than any other. Every year from the middle of September to the beginning of October, Munich hosts the world’s largest folk festival “Oktoberfest” for 16 days. People travel from all over the world to take part in the festivities. There are rides, sideshows, costumes, food, and of course, plenty of beer. With 14 big tents and 21 small tents, beer is served from 9am to 10:30pm every day for a reasonable price.
Neuschwanstein Castle:
There are so many beautiful castles in Germany that it may be hard to pick your favorite! One of the most famous landmarks and most visited castle in all of Europe is the Neuschwanstein Castle. This castle was built by King Ludwig II, known as the “Fairytale King.” The mythical look of the castle even inspired Walt Disney to create the Magic Kingdom, he later replicated this majestic architecture for the park’s palace. In addition to Neuschwanstein Castle, Rapunzel’s castle is also located in Germany and will be included in the new tour “Romantic Road and Fairy Tale Road.”
Rhine River:
This river travels through six countries linking southern and northern Europe. It is the only river in the world with so many old and famous cities on its banks. In the Middle Rhine Valley, located in Germany, you will find vineyards, castles and fortresses. It brings together old myths, fairy tales, and romance and truly is a trip back through history.
Cuckoo Clocks:
The birthplace of the cuckoo clock is in the German Black Forest. They have become the symbol of the region. The clocks were made in the winter time when the farms were snowed in, and then sold in the summer time. There are two main types of cuckoo clocks and all clocks are hand carved with some of the most beautiful detailing in the world.
Expert Advice
For beverages, nothing beats the hot mulled wine, with or without a shot of brandy, or Eierpunsch”, the traditional egg-based, warm alcoholic drink.
The Christmas Markets have their own special fare to sample including candied and toasted almonds, traditional Christmas cookies made of gingerbread, Stollen, an egg bread topped with candied fruit, Bratwurst, and cheeses served on sticks.
Be sure to hit an ATM; many places in Germany do not accept credit cards.

Ski the Bavarian Alps or hike through charming mountain villages, passing mirror-clear glacial lakes, waterfalls, and forests. Marvel at Munich’s Gothic architecture and stop for a beer at Germany’s famous biergartens. Liberty Travel’s consultants bring you tailor-made Germany vacation packages.

Germany Vacations, Tours, Trips & Travel Packages
Our Germany Tours and Travel
The Republic of Germany is the largest country in Central Europe and is bordered to the north by Denmark , to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic , to the south by Austria and Switzerland and to the west by France , Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands . Germany is one of the most influential European nations culturally , and one of the world's main economic powers. It is equally known for its old-world charm and "Gemütlichkeit" (coziness). If you have perceptions of Germany as simply homogeneous, it will surprise you with its many historical regions and local diversity which can be found on German vacations.
Germany Travel Information
The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the subsequent German Reunification are the main events of recent German history . The reunification process has overall been seen as one of Germany’s greatest success stories and October 3rd is celebrated as "German Unification Day".
German Language
The official language of Germany is, of course, German. Standard German is called "Hochdeutsch" (High German). This can be understood by all mother-tongue speakers of German and spoken by almost all when necessary. However, every region has its own dialect. This is usually noticeable only on travel to Germany in the south, and in rural areas of the north and east. When travelling in Bavaria, Saxony and Baden, you are stepping foot in places where dialect remains a strong part of the local identity. The general rule is that the south of the Main River divides north Germany from the south in both language and local culture. All Germans now learn English at school, though proficiency will vary depending on where your German vacation takes you, so it’s a good idea to at least dust off that high school German before you go.
Top cities to visit on a German Trip
When you travel to Germany, you can expect a completely different experience in Berlin , a city unlikely to be found anywhere else on the planet. While architecturally an odd mismatch of sterilized apartment blocks, post-modernist glass and steel structures, and some historic leftovers, it has a laid-back atmosphere and a culture of internationalism that accepts everyone as a "Berliner." Its turbulent history gave rise to an enormous wealth of historical attractions, among them the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg Gate, the Bundestag, Checkpoint Charlie, Fernsehturm, the Holocaust Memorial and the DDR museum. But do not miss out on the Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood if you want to feel like a true Berliner.

Munich
When on German vacations, you should visit Munich, the third-largest city in the country after Berlin and Hamburg. It is famous for its beautiful architecture, culture and its annual Oktoberfest beer celebration. Munich's cultural scene is second to none with museums even considered by some to outrank Berlin’s. The city’s architecture is stunning with its mix of historic buildings and modern architecture. Although it was heavily damaged during World War II, many of its historic buildings have been rebuilt and the city centre appears mostly as it did in the late 1800s including its largest church, the Frauenkirche, and City Hall, the Neues Rathaus. The Munich Residenz is the former royal palace of the Bavarian Monarchs. It is the largest city palace in Germany and is today revered for its architecture, room decorations and displays from former royal collections. One cannot forget Munich’s very important beer festival on travel to Germany, Oktoberfest. Despite its name, most of Oktoberfest occurs in September. For two weeks, Oktoberfest attracts millions of people visiting its beer tents. The Hofbrauhaus, possibly the most famous beer hall worldwide, is located in the city centre.

Frankfurt is the financial centre of Germany and Europe as a whole. It is known for its futuristic skyline and Germany’s busiest airport. It is a city of contrasts. Wealthy bankers, students and creative types coexist in a city that has some of the highest, most avant-garde skyscrapers in Europe next to well-maintained old buildings. If spending time here on German tours, consider visiting some of the following. The Romerberg is the busy market square located in the Old Town. Attractions located on the square include the Old Town Hall, St. Nickolas Church, the Ostzeile (half-timbered old houses) and the Frankfurt History Museum. Frankfurt Cathedral, also known simply as the Dom, is an imposing old Roman Catholic Gothic church located in the centre of Frankfurt. The original opera house in Frankfurt is now the Alte Oper (Old Opera), a concert hall and former opera house. Destroyed by bombing in 1944. It was rebuilt, slowly and in 1981, opened again. The Frankfurt TV Tower began in 1974. At its completion five years later, it became the tallest free-standing structure in the Federal Republic of Germany. The top of the tower can revolve and provides a panoramic view of the Rhine-Main area. Frankfurt is a handy starting point for travel to Germany, especially to visit neighbouring tourist attractions such as Heidelberg and the Rhine Valley.
Other must-visit German cities
Hamburg is an economic and cultural powerhouse with the second busiest port on the continent. The fashion city of Dusseldorf, the Alps at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the media hub of Cologne, and the motor industry in Stuttgart each represent a flourishing sector of Germany’s economic and cultural identity, and time permitting, are all worth visiting on your German vacations.
What are the best places to visit in Germany?
Germany is a vast and diverse country with 16 culturally unique states that only formed a political union in 1871. Some of the main tourist areas include the following.
The Rhine is the longest river in Germany. Between Bingen and Bonn, the Rhine flows through the Rhine Gorge, a stretch of the river which is known for its many castles and vineyards. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is known as "the Romantic Rhine" with more than 40 castles and fortresses from the Middle Ages and many quaint and lovely country villages.
The Romantic Road
Ideal for self-drive German tours, the Romantic Road is a famous scenic route along which one can experience romantic castles and picturesque villages. This includes fairy-tale like Neuschwanstein Castle, the walled city of Rothenburg which has a beautiful medieval centre that seems untouched by the passage of time. Similar German towns can be found elsewhere in the country.
