Anton & Giovanni’s Adventures in Spain review: A bit like The Trip with the jokes and plot taken out

The bbc one show strains to paint the ‘strictly’ stars as the classic ‘odd couple’ duo, as the pair head to seville and beyond, article bookmarked.

There comes a time in every celebrity’s career when they must embark on a televised journey around a European country with someone they know from work. It’s practically the light entertainer’s form of jury service. Last year,  Strictly Come Dancing  pros Anton du Beke and Giovanni Pernice got the call-up, and headed to the latter’s native Sicily during the  Strictly  off-season; now, Du Beke is returning the favour by taking Pernice on Adventures in Spain for BBC One (his mum hails from the north of the country).

Their jolly begins in Seville , where the pair’s dynamic is quickly established in broad strokes. Pernice, 33, never misses an opportunity to crack a joke about his 57-year-old co-star’s more advanced years (“90 years old... almost your age,” he deadpans as they visit the spectacular Plaza de España). Du Beke, meanwhile, takes a performatively head-shaking “Oh, what is he like!” attitude to his younger colleague’s foibles, especially when Pernice makes a linguistic slip-up (he’s left in stitches after the Italian confuses maracas with Caracas during a chat about flamenco dancing, which pretty much sums up their banter).

They do at least seem like genuinely good pals, even if the programme strains a little to paint them as the classic “odd couple” duo. Thanks to scenes showing the two friends singing in the car while driving (song choice: “Y Viva España”, obviously) and Du Beke’s resemblance to Rob Brydon, the whole endeavour starts to feel a bit like  The Trip   with the jokes and plot taken out.

As our guides head on to the mountaintop city of Ronda (a recommendation from Du Beke’s mum), the action is even lower stakes than the average celeb travelogue. There is an entire plot point devoted to Pernice drinking too much orange juice and needing the toilet, which makes an enjoyable contrast with his suave  Strictly  persona. Then we have a segment in which they get their car clamped and must negotiate with the parking inspector who is trying to give them a ticket.

By the time they reach the Caminito del Rey, the vertigo-inducing Málaga walkway once known as one of the most dangerous hikes in the world, there are more bladder updates (now it’s Du Beke that needs the loo). Pernice is not good with heights, and doesn’t enjoy having to wear a hairnet underneath his helmet; walking so close to a precipitous drop induces a miniature meltdown (albeit a very polite one, less TV diva and more reluctant teenager who has been forced to do activities on a family holiday). “My hair is a mess, I’m sweating, I don’t have my aftershave,” he laments. Cue more paternal eyerolls from Du Beke.

It’s inevitable, given this duo’s particular skill set, that the show also gives Pernice a chance to perform with a flamenco champion while Du Beke proudly looks on from the sidelines. And there’s also a bit of a jump scare when the pair rather jarringly segue from having a totally normal chat into a song-and-dance performance of “Together (Wherever We Go)” from  Gypsy  (are they trying to soft-launch a Christmas album of musical covers, perhaps? Alfie Boe and Michael Ball, watch out).

For all the jazz hands and quick steps, though, the show’s best moment is one of its most banal. Sitting in the car, waiting for Pernice to return from the toilet, Du Beke scrolls through his phone. “Look at that, Nick Knowles has got engaged again,” he says, in the world-weary tones of someone who’s been navigating the sleb circuit for decades. It’s an intriguing glimpse of an off-duty Du Beke. Perhaps the next series should just feature fly-on-the-wall footage of him reacting to celebrity news. It might not be as telegenic, but it’d certainly be cheaper.

Lighting a better way … Anton Du Beke (left) and Giovanni Pernice in Anton and Giovanni’s Adventures in Sicily.

Anton and Giovanni’s Adventures in Sicily review – the Strictly stars’ bond is so moving it will make you weep

This is much more than a celebrity travelogue – it’s the tale of a charming and genuine friendship. These two are a ray of hope in an age of toxic masculinity

A t first it seems as if Anton and Giovanni’s Adventures in Sicily is going to be very much more of the same thing we have seen too many times before. Two celebrities pretend to be mates and swan off on a jolly somewhere sunny, justifying the effort and their fee by flinging a few factoids about the history and culture of La Isla Foreigna at us as they eat, drink, boat-ride and five-star hotel their way around the place.

Strictly Come Dancing stars Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice are taking a three-episode road trip around Pernice’s native Sicily. Things begin tiresomely with a confected set piece about Pernice having to carry all Anton “The Celebrity’s” luggage and Du Beke’s agonising efforts to order a coffee in Italian. You distract yourself from the formulaic boredom by wondering who it is Du Beke reminds you of. He is, you eventually work out, four parts Bruce Forsyth (at one point he even says “Didn’t she do well?”), one part Michael Barrymore (before, you know, Everything) and a small amount of Rob Brydon.

Once those opening scenes are out of the way, something strange starts to happen. The pair are revealed as genuine friends and genuinely charming together. The programme makers, presumably realising they have something a little better than usual, get out of the way and let them just be. Soon, the bond between them is so irresistible that at times it brings you to the brink of tears. Their relationship is partly simple friendship, partly that of two skilled professionals passionate about what they do, who slide into singing and dancing as easily as they do conversation, and partly a sweet father-son dynamic, which is the bit that really lifts it out of the commonplace.

Sometimes it is funny, such as when Du Beke is enthusing over historic sites Pernice remembers being dragged round on school trips. (“Boring then,” he mutters as Du Beke marvels at the ancient beauty around them. “Boring now.”) And sometimes it is eye-moistening. At the end of one day’s hard sightseeing, as they sit on a rock at sunset and look out at the beautiful Sicilian landscape, Pernice tells Du Beke that when he first arrived in England from Italy a decade ago, “you really were the only person to look after me from the beginning. So this is my chance to say – thank you very much. This is my home, and I will look after you.” Du Beke doesn’t bat it away with some embarrassed banter – he thanks him and is moved.

It’s not that it transforms the programme – we still have them driving badly, getting lost and all the rest of it – but it does elevate it. They are patient with each other, interested in each other, and Du Beke is unabashedly eager to learn about the places that mean so much to his pal. The baseline of cynicism we have become accustomed to in these and many other programmes is gone. They sing Tragedy in the car and O Sole Mio to test the acoustics of the Ear of Dionysius cave in Syracuse. Then they sing and dance together to Sinatra in an amphitheatre. We see the Catholic Pernice consumed with nerves before undertaking his part in carrying La Madonna del Soccorso through the streets of Syracuse to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. And we see them dance together again at the end at a local dance festival. In an age where toxic masculinity sometimes seems as if it threatens to overwhelm us all, they are a ray of hope, lighting a different, better way. I’m sorry. I think the Italian air is getting to me.

Still, I stand by the judgment that Anton and Giovanni’s Adventures in Sicily provides something a little better and a lot more charming than most of the products out of the travel series factory. I would also add that if you are still undecided, there is a discussion as they head for a swim in the sea about the translation of “budgie smugglers” (“No,” says Du Beke, “the bird is not the smuggler”) that is worth the price of admission alone.

At the end of the first leg of their journey, Pernice says: “I love this place with a big smile on my mouth.” Hardhearted be the viewer who cannot say the same.

This article was amended on 22 March 2023. The Feast of the Assumption visited by Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice was in Syracuse, not Sciacca as an earlier version said.

How to watch Anton & Giovanni's Adventures in Spain as new travel series airs

Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice are back on our screens this week as they return with a new travel series.

The Strictly Come Dancing stars and best friends are exploring Spain this time, having been to Sicily together previously.

In the new series the pair head to Anton’s motherland and meet friends old and new along the way while exploring parts of the country they have never been to before.

Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice explore Spain in new travel series

Speaking about his connections to Spain, Du Beke told the BBC: “My mum is Spanish. She came over to the UK, when she was in her early 20s. She comes from Galicia in the north of Spain, in rural Spain.

“So, it was hard, Franco’s Spain, it was hard times, and just to get a better life and get a better job she came over to the UK to be an au pair or a nanny for a family and then went from there.”

He added: “My mother is Spanish, my father is Hungarian. So, I'm sort of first-generation UK. I was born in the UK. My parents both came from another country during their 20s.”

When asked about his most memorable moment of the trip, he said: “Well, I have to be honest with you there wasn't a most memorable, it was all extraordinary.

“I enjoyed the whole thing, from Seville to Bilbao, our little dip into Benidorm was a lot of fun too - I enjoyed that enormously.

“We did an aqua aerobics class. I mean, it was so up our street really, being with the Brits there in the sun, in the pool and messing about, that’s us really. It really was a lot of fun.”

When asked about his most memorable moment of the adventure, Pernice said the pair “had a lot of fun”, saying: “Well, obviously that's got to be spending time with Anton everywhere! That was the best part of the trip, even just a simple journey in the car, we had a lot of fun.

“I also think going back to see Anton’s roots to see where his family lived has to be one of the highlights of the show.

“We did a lot of good things...we had a lot of food, and tried lots of new foods, we danced a lot and we explored a lot of nice, beautiful beaches. So the whole thing was memorable generally I can't pick the best moment!”

Viewers can also expect to see Strictly Come Dancing professional and Basque local Gorka Márquez in episode three as the trio explore the place he grew up in.

Marquez said: “It was very nice to have them there and show them around the places I was surrounded by growing up.”

Is there a trailer for Anton and Giovanni's Adventures In Sicily?

Yes the BBC has now released a trailer for Anton and Giovanni's Adventures In Sicily which show the laughs and fun the friends are having in the series. Take a look below...

What happens in Anton and Giovanni's Adventures in Sicily — locations, sights and episode guide

Prepare for sun, sea and plenty of surprises as Anton du Beke and Giovanni Pernice head to Sicily to see the best of the Mediterranean island. On their road trip they will take in the sights, enjoy the food and share lots of laughs along the way. We've loved watching Sicily as the setting for White Lotus season 2 , and can't wait to find out more.

The pair will be exploring Syracuse, Catania, Mount Etna, Taormina and Gino's home city of Palermo where Gio will introduce his family to Anton. Along the way the pair will be joined in episode 2 by Giovanni's Strictly-winning partner and former EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis .

Episode 1 The pair take part in a taxi race through the streets of Sciacca, try their hands at octopus fishing, and even carry an enormous statue of the Madonna on their shoulders - and if you’ve ever wanted to hear Anton perform the rap from Wannabe by the Spice Girls, your time has finally come. Giovanni drives their car into a ditch at one point and in the coastal town of Catania we see where Giovanni first left home for to peruse his dancing dream...

Episode 2 The second leg of their Sicilian holiday sees Strictly stars Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice heading to Taormina, a tourist town that Giovanni refers to as ‘the St Tropez of Sicily’ - and while the pair are enjoying a spot of traditional Sicilian music, they’re spotted by some Strictly fans who want to stop and chat! After attempting paddleboarding with little success, they head to Mount Etna, where Giovanni has arranged for them to go trekking with alpacas - but they struggle to make friends with their temperamental new travelling companions. "I wouldn’t recommend trekking with alpacas,’ says Anton. ‘They’re very grumpy - we called ours Shirley and Craig!’ As they continue their journey up the active volcano, it’s Anton’s turn to spring a surprise on Giovanni. A helicopter appears on the horizon and comes in to land - and out steps Giovanni’s Strictly-winning partner from 2021, former EastEnders star Rose Ayling-Ellis!  Rose then joins the boys on their adventures, as they take a helicopter around the volcano, enjoy some traditional Sicilian spa treatments, and embark on a high speed zipwire ride which leaves Giovanni trembling with terror… "When you’re on Strictly, you form a very unique relationship with your partner that endures,’ says Anton. ‘So when Rose turned up, it was wonderful. She’s so funny, she’s got a really dry sense of humour, so I knew she’d tease him and he’d tease her, and I could laugh and enjoy it - sometimes we’d double up and both tease him!"

Episode 3 Anton and Giovanni reach the end of their Sicilian journey this week as they head for their final destination: the coastal city of Palermo, where Giovanni grew up. Along the way, the duo have a go at making pasta, spend the night in a monastery, stop for a round of golf, and Giovanni introduces Anton to his favourite Sicilian street foods… "It was interesting to see Anton trying the food," says Giovanni. "I was so excited to show Anton what the stigghiola [grilled guts of lambs and calves] would be like, because it’s one of my favourite things - and he hated it! I was laughing so hard, I couldn’t finish mine!" After Giovanni takes Anton to his childhood home to meet his family, their adventure concludes with a big party to celebrate Giovanni’s 32nd birthday. Giovanni’s former Strictly dance partner Rose Ayling-Ellis rejoins the pair, and Anton’s wife, Hannah, arrives with their children, George and Henrietta, as a surprise. "That was one of the loveliest moments for me," says Anton. "Giovanni’s family and my family coming together at the party was a highlight of my life!" Introducing Anton to my family was the cherry on the cake of the whole trip," agrees Giovanni. ‘My dad is the biggest fan of Anton Du Beke! Seeing a friend I admire and my dad getting together was absolutely beautiful. I’m quite an emotional person, and I shed tears of joy!"

Interviews: Anton and Giovanni reveal their experiences in Sicily

How did this show come about? Anton says: "We were both on Strictly Come Dancing and then we started doing a theatre show on tour together. So it’s about the relationship between us." Giovanni reveals: "Anton has always been the person to look up to for me. He looked after me when I first arrived in this country, and this was my time to say, ‘I’ll do it for you’!"

How was your time in Sicily? Anton says: "Wonderful! I’ve been to Italy many times, but never to Sicily. The food’s amazing, the people are lovely, and the heat is extraordinary - we were filming in July and August! Giovanni says: "It was one of those moments in my life when I felt so proud of myself, and so happy. It’s nice to be back and see friends I haven’t seen for 15 years – because I live in a different country, they don’t always know what’s happening with me!

What adventures did the two of you get up to? Anton says: "Paddleboarding was a low. There’s an expression that people say about balance, ‘you’re a dancer, you’ll be fine’ - that doesn’t apply to paddleboarding." Giovanni says: "When I see Anton out of his comfort zone, it makes me laugh. There’s a scene where we’re at the barber, and he’s having a face treatment - and I shaved his chest!"

Were there any mishaps along the way? Anton reveals: "We had a lovely car, and Giovanni said to me, ‘don’t drive too fast’ - suffice to say we got pulled over by the police!"  Giovanni says: "With this kind of car, you’re very noticed, so people are looking at you straight away - and they stop you because they want to know who you are."

Which of you is the better traveller? Anton says: "You travel very light." Giovanni replies: "You travel very heavy! How many suits did you bring?" Anton retorts: "One or two." Giovanni laughs: "Exactly, 50 suits for three days. And the problem is, he makes everyone else carry it for him!"

Their Sicily trip is full of laughter.

It comes as we reveal a fourth celebrity partner was left in tears after a run in with the pro backstage on spin-off show, It Takes Two.

Faye’s struggle comes after three of Giovanni’s celebrity partners —  Amanda Abbington ,  Ranvir Singh  and  Laura Whitmore  — met to “compare notes” about his behaviour backstage in February.

Giovanni Pernice and Anton Du Beke 's Adventures In Spain came to an end on Monday night, with the pair dropping a huge hint at the show's future.

Viewers watched the Strictly Come Dancing duo travel across the stunning country together, and the third and final episode saw Anton, 57, reunite with his wife Hannah Summers, his two children and mother Ascensión for the final leg of the trip.

After reaching Ascensión's home village, the pair joined Strictly pro Gorka Marquez for a stunning performance.

As the final episode came to a close, Anton said: 'What a lovely, lovely way to spend a summer. Where to next?'

Giovanni coyly replied: 'Well, it doesn't matter where we're going. As long as we're together,' hinting that the pair's show could be heading back to screens.

It comes after Giovanni took to social media to break his silence in the wake of claims Strictly  bosses are in crunch talks over his future on the show.

Taking to Instagram on Sunday evening, he opted not to mention the scandal surrounding the show and instead plugged his BBC TV show with Anton.

Giovanni's carefree promotional post comes amid shocking whispers surrounding his time as a pro on Strictly, after he was hit with new allegations that he left a fourth celebrity partner in tears - leading to the bosses' crunch talks.

The dancer reportedly left Step's Faye Tozer, 48, in tears after a heated clash backstage of spin-off show It Takes Two  in 2018.

A source told T he Sun  how Giovanni's 'fiercely competitive' nature left the pop star emotional and they butted heads during rehearsals.

Telling the publication: 'They did often clash and she was in tears on It Takes Two' She found how he spoke to her abrasive.'

Giovanni is already feuding with Amanda Abbington who quit the BBC series last year before accusing him of difficult behaviour during training and that her time in the competition left her with PTSD.

It was also reported that Amanda joined the Italian's other former partners  Ranvir Singh and Laura Whitmore  for an ' emotional summit' to 'compare notes' about their time working with him.

The Sun  also reported that Giovanni would be meeting Strictly's top brass on Thursday, saying the broadcaster was backing the dancer after not receiving any offical complaints against him.

'He is an accomplished pro dancer and it's expected he will be taking his place in the formal line-up when it's announced later this month.'

MailOnline have contacted BBC, Giovanni and Faye's reps for comment at the time.

A source close to Amanda, Ranvir and Amanda told MailOnline: 'They are very unhappy with the way the BBC are handling this.'

The insider continued: 'It's one thing saying they are standing by him, but they feel as if Giovanni is being promoted and pushed centre stage in a bid to make them go away and keep quiet. It's a kick in the teeth.

'One of the reasons they wanted to meet up was to try and work on a way forward because they have no intention of just backing down and letting this just fade away.

'All three have been impacted in different ways by what happened and they've agreed to speak again about how best they can get something done about it because they are genuinely worried about want went on and the fact someone else could end up experiencing what they went through.

'But right now there's a feeling that Gio is pretty much untouchable - especially given he is so close to Anton who thinks the world of him and can't believe the stuff he's been hearing claimed about his mate.'

MailOnline's Katie Hind reported earlier this week that Giovanni had up until now been  agonisingly waiting to hear about his future due to Strictly boss Sarah James being on maternity leave.

A show insider told The Mail: 'There's a bit of chaos surrounding all this year's show. Usually, there would be a decision made on the professional dancers by now but because the boss is off, and she is held in such high regard, everything has been put on hold.

'No decisions would be made without her and it isn't really okay to expect someone on maternity leave to get involved in work matters when they are off.

'For Giovanni, it means he has to wait to see his fate. The BBC have backed him on this, they have had no complaint from Amanda and it has all become rather strange.

'But he hasn't put pen to paper yet. Giovanni, of course, wants to return. Why wouldn't he?'

While Amanda hasn't made any complaint against Giovanni her representative briefed a red top newspaper that she had asked the BBC for video footage of the pair's training sessions.

Ever since Giovanni Pernice and Rose Ayling-Ellis first set foot on the Strictly  dancefloor, the duo have been adored by fans of the show.

Despite lifting the glitterball trophy back in 2021 , viewers still long to see them reunite, as they proved once again at the weekend.

Giovanni took to Instagram to ask fans a question about his other TV show, sparking a series of comments about his former dance partner in the process.

The star shared a screenshot of an article about his travel series with Anton Du Beke , which had the headline: "Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice fans beg them to do another travel series".

The Italian captioned it: "Question time … very simple answer YES OR NOT! Would you like to see me and my bestie going somewhere else?" His followers were quick to respond, with several making the same point about Gio's former Strictly  partner Rose.

"Yes please but need Rose in there you were all fantastic together and a bit of a different perspective with Rose and she has toured around a great deal x," one replied, with other commenters adding: "Agree," and: "Wholeheartedly agree!

"Rose brings something special but whatever happens you must carry on with your wonderful adventures! Love you together!"

A fourth chimed in: "Yes, and take Rose as well," while a fifth wrote: "We need Rose too." A few weeks earlier, the dancer melted hearts when he paid a sweet tribute to the EastEnders star during his stage show, Let Me Entertain You .

Like many Strictly dancers, Giovanni now uses British Sign Language to signal "Thank you" to viewers and he did so again following his performance in Dublin, a tradition started by Rose during her time on the show.

Giovanni's career has gone from strength to strength ever since, with the release of his unisex fragrance Vita and his TV show with co-star and close friend Anton Du Beke, on which Rose made a delightful surprise appearance.

The first series, Anton & Giovanni's Adventures in Sicily featured the pair travelling throughout Giovanni's homeland, where the trio were reunited.

The second series saw Anton and Giovanni travel across Spain, where the Strictly judge's mum is from. "The best thing about the first series is when Rose joined them, she was so much fun," commented one fan when the second series was announced.

Meanwhile, the actress is set to star in upcoming ITV drama Code of Silence. Rose and Giovanni always appeared to have a warm partnership during her time on the show, with the actress saying: "I started off finding dancing very confusing. It was a strange new skill.

"But Giovanni was so good. He listened and learnt a lot from me. We learnt very quickly that, if we were together, I could follow him."
