Everything you need to know about the best prepaid SIM card you can buy in Greece. Includes information on local operators in Greece, where to buy a Greece SIM card, what documents you need, available data packages and more.

How to buy a SIM card for Greece

How to buy a SIM Card for Greece

Where can I get a Greece SIM card? Tourists and expats traveling to Greece ask this question all the time, as they want to get a Greece SIM card for mobile broadband as soon as they arrive.

It’s hardly surprising! These days, it’s super important to stay connected with friends and relatives around the world. Not to mention posting all the amazing Greece photos from your holiday 🙂

This guide to the prepaid SIM cards you can get for Greece is here to help. It includes information on:

  • the main providers in Greece
  • the various SIM plans and packages each provider offers
  • what documents you need to get a new SIM
  • where to get your Greek SIM card – stores, street vendors, the Athens airport
  • activating your SIM card and buying bundles
  • coverage, 4G and 5G in Greece
  • eSIM and tourist SIM information
  • why contract phones are not worth it, even if you are living in Greece.

Greece prepaid SIM card providers

There are three local providers in Greece: Cosmote , Vodafone Greece and Nova , formerly known as Wind. Each of these companies offer several types of prepaid SIM cards.

If you are only here for a few days or weeks, any Pay As You Go Greek SIM card you buy will be fine. Whichever operator you choose, your SIM will usually work well at popular destinations such as Athens , Santorini or Mykonos .

Generally speaking though, Cosmote has the best network coverage around Greece. So if you are planning to do lots of traveling in Greece, the best SIM card to get is probably Cosmote.

My top suggestion for the best Greek prepaid card to buy would be Cosmote Frog – if you can find it. This is the best SIM deal for Greece. Alternatively, go for either Cosmote WhatsUp, or Vodafone CU.

I have included more info on all these SIM cards later on in the article.

Greece SIM vs EU SIM

If you already have an SIM card from any EU country, there are no roaming charges. So, there is no real reason to get a Greek SIM if you are only here for a short time, unless you need a local phone number.

To be honest, most SIM cards from the EU (and often the UK) are better value than the Greek ones. Just make sure you are familiar with your provider’s fair usage policy. Plus, note that your EU SIM might not work perfectly everywhere.

Greece SIM vs overseas SIM

In my opinion, if you are visiting from outside the EU, you should definitely get a local SIM. Your provider (e.g. Verizon or T Mobile in the USA) will likely have overseas data plans. However, these will always be a lot more expensive, and may even end up in unexpected costs.

Also, while WiFi is very common in Greece, there will always be a time that you desperately need the Internet and it won’t be available.

A good example is when you are driving around Greece , or if you get lost walking around Ancient Athens . Even with downloading the offline Google Maps, it’s always best to actually have an internet connection.

Finally, a Greek SIM card can also come in handy if you want to book ferry tickets , train tickets, or just confirm your reservation with your hotel. As you will get a local number, you can easily use it for apps like Viber, WhatsApp etc.

What do I need to buy a prepaid Greece SIM card?

To buy a prepaid SIM card for Greece, you will need to show a valid ID document, such as a passport . Wherever you go to get your new card, the seller will either photocopy or take a photo of your passport – this is normal!

According to Greek legislation, you can only purchase a SIM card if you are over 18 years old . If your teenage children want their own SIM cards, you can buy two or more cards using the same passport.

Where to buy a SIM card in Greece

The best places to get your SIM card in Greece are either designated stores, or street vendors in the bigger cities. It’s possible to buy a SIM card at the Athens Airport, but it’s a lot more expensive.

To use your new card, you will need to have an unlocked phone. Some mobile phones come with a dual SIM option, so you can also use your original SIM if you prefer.

Buying a Greece SIM card in a store

All three providers have hundreds of shops across the country where you can easily get a new Greece SIM card. Cosmote SIM cards are also sold at a store chain called Germanos.

A view of Syntagma Square Athens

Here are some of the stores where you can get a SIM card for Greece around Syntagma Square and Plaka , close to the main shopping areas in central Athens:

  • Cosmote Syntagma Square – Mitropoleos 1
  • Cosmote Monastiraki – Athinas 45
  • Germanos Syntagma Square – Stadiou 10
  • Vodafone Syntagma Square – Stadiou 9
  • Vodafone Acropolis – Veikou 72
  • Nova Kolonaki – Patriarchou Ioakim 7
  • Nova Acropolis – Veikou 1

If you are starting your trip at Thessaloniki or one of the Greek islands, you can use Google Maps to find the nearest shop that sells SIMs.

Expect to pay about 10-15 euro to get your new SIM card, including some credit that will enable you to buy data packages, minutes or text bundles. More on this, later.

Getting a Greece SIM card from a street vendor

If you are in Athens, you can also get prepaid SIM card deals from street vendors. These cards are perfectly legitimate, and typically offer much better value than the SIM cards you would find at the stores.

Usually, these vendors have detailed boards out, explaining what they offer and how much it costs. In fact, they are probably the best place to get your SIM card for Greece 🙂

You can find these street vendors close to busy metro stations , such as Syntagma, Monastiraki, Omonia and Victoria. Most of them are young, and they speak at least some level of English as they often work with foreign visitors.

You can easily get a SIM card around Syntagma Square in Athens

And while it might feel strange having a random person on the street take a photo of your passport, you would still have to do the same thing if you went to a store.

Again, you can expect to pay around 10-15 euro for your new SIM card along with some credit which you can use to get a package. The difference is, you will typically get more GB / more minutes than a card you’d find in a shop.

Buying Greek SIM cards at the Athens International Airport

Some visitors would prefer to get hold of a Greece SIM card as soon as they’ve landed at the Athens International Airport. While this is possible, it won’t get you the best deal, plus you may have to face long queues.

Still, you can get a local SIM card at the airport in Athens. You will need to find the SIM LOCAL kiosk at the Arrivals Level, and check their current offers. In summer, their opening hours are usually 6.00-22.00 every day.

How to buy a SIM card at the Athens International Airport

At the time of writing, the only available option is a special travel pass Vodafone Greece package providing 15 GB of data, 200 minutes of calls to local numbers, and 120 minutes of calls to international numbers.

Along with the activation fee, this comes at a total price of 35 euros, which is rather steep when compared to the local services. Still, it’s an option if you want to be connected on the way to your hotel.

Buying a package for your new Greek SIM card

At the time you purchase your new SIM card, you will also need to buy some credit. The vendor will explain how to use your credit, and what packages are available.

You will then need to activate a package that suits your needs. I can’t stress this enough!

Unless you get a package, your credit will disappear in zero time! The easiest way to activate these packages is through an app which you will download on your mobile phone.

In summer, all providers offer unlimited GB deals that are valid for 30 days and cost about 11-13 euros. This is by far the best available deal you can get. You can just ask the seller to activate this, and you are done!

If you are visiting outside summer, you’ll have to check the available packages at the time. Generally speaking, you can buy a package with a certain number of GBs for a set period of time – a day, a week, or a month. Or you can buy a package which gives you both GBs and some minutes / SMS to local phone numbers.

A Cosmote store Greece

A quick overview of prepaid SIM cards for Greece

Let’s have a quick look at the prepaid SIM cards you are most likely to find in Greece.

Cosmote WhatsUp

I switched from a Cosmote contract to a Cosmote WhatsUp prepaid card a few years ago, and never looked back. Even if you move to Greece, contract phones are really not worth it in my opinion. Not only do they tie you to a 2-year contract, but they also work out to be more expensive.

With the WhatsUp package I spend an average of about 14 euro per month for all the GBs and minutes I need… and as I travel a lot around Greece, I need loads!

This SIM card offers many different bundles, including unlimited GB for 10.90 euro in summer. There’s also a DIY bundle that you can customize, and any unused data / minutes are carried over to the next month.

If you want a cheap data only SIM, this is a great option. However, there’s a catch: for the time being, the WhatsUp app is only in Greek, so you’ll need someone who speaks Greek to activate it and top it up. Customer service or street vendor can also do that for you.

You can find more info here (in Greek).

Cosmote Frog

In my opinion, Cosmote Frog is the best SIM card in Greece for tourists and expats. It uses the Cosmote network, offers slightly better value than Cosmote WhatsUp, and the app is also in English.

Unlike Cosmote WhatsUp, with Frog you only pay per second when making a call – which does make a difference. Plus, it gives you several different options for calls abroad.

In Athens, you can get the Cosmote Frog SIM at their flagship store. Their address is Stadiou 51 , very close to Omonia metro. Otherwise, you can always try the street vendors or perhaps order it here .

Overall, Cosmote Frog is not the easiest SIM card to find. Hopefully this will change in the future, as they have great customer service over messenger.

You can find more info here: Cosmote Frog .

Cosmote Cosmokarta

This service from Cosmote is more geared towards people who want to talk a lot. In my opinion, it doesn’t offer any benefits compared to the other Cosmote products, and prices can be higher.

You can find more info here: Cosmote Cosmokarta

SIM card for Greece Vodafone

Vodafone CU

This is another good option for visitors. In summer, they usually offer an unlimited data package valid for a month for 10.90 euro. Their app can be switched to English, so you can use it on your own. I’ve heard mixed opinions about their customer care, but I haven’t used them myself so I don’t have an opinion.

You can find more info here: Vodafone CU

Vodafone You

Offers fairly flexible bundles, but there’s no unlimited data option. If you are a traveler, Vodafone CU will probably suit you better.

You can find more info here: Vodafone You (in Greek)

Vodafone International

Another package from Vodafone Greece, which focuses on call minutes to several different countries. There’s a fairly good option for monthly data as well.

You can find more info here: Vodafone International (in Greek)

This is another option offering unlimited data for 10.60 euro in summer. There’s also a bundle for EU calls.

You can find more info here: Nova F2G

A good selection of bundles, including some with call minutes to international numbers. Unlike some other SIM cards, you only pay per second when making a call.

You can find more info here: Nova MyQ

Tips for expats and nomads staying longer in Greece

If you are only in Greece as a tourist, you initial credit should cover you for the duration of your trip. Your SIM card will remain active for a period of time, so if you are visiting again soon you can re-use it.

However, if you are planning to stay in Greece for a few weeks or months, you will need to top up your credit at some point. You can do it online with a credit card / PayPal, buy a scratch-card with credit at a periptero (kiosk), or top-up in a shop.

You can buy a top-up voucher for Greece at a kiosk

With most plans, you can carry any unused part of the package over to the next month, provided that you add some credit and renew your package before it expires.

It’s important to know that a tax is charged on any top-up voucher. For example, if you top up 13 euro, your balance will only be 11.81. Take that into account if you are planning to buy a package which costs over this amount.

And, in all circumstances, do not forget to buy a new bundle – otherwise, your new credit will run out super quickly!

Also, have a look at this guide with helpful websites for expats in Greece .

Things to know about network coverage in Greece

While 4G (and, sometimes, 5G coverage) is available in Greece, in practice you might experience a slow connection. In fact, the speed of your mobile data can vary a lot, depending on your exact location.

Some carriers work better than others in certain areas – so if you are planning to stay somewhere for long, ask your neighbors what provider they are using. On the whole, Cosmote is probably the most reliable one.

If you are visiting remote islands like Nisyros , Kalymnos or Tilos , or even upcoming islands like Milos , don’t expect to have signal 24/7.

Reception can be affected by weather conditions, such as the meltemi winds . Yes… I’m talking from experience!

Remote areas in Greece don't have good Internet connection

It’s also a good idea to ensure that your cell phone is NOT on automatic network selection. If you are traveling to the Dodecanese islands, like Rhodes or Kos , your phone can automatically log on to Turkish networks, and you can easily lose any remaining credit.

Last, but not least – it is possible to use your phone as a hotspot for all your devices. I have done this many times on various islands where the WiFi was slow, and found that an unlimited data SIM was very useful.

Note that this option might not be able to support some services, such as streaming videos or making a video call. But it still might be useful if the Wi Fi signal is poor.

Using an eSIM / International SIM card in Greece

There are a bunch of International SIM cards / travel SIM cards out there that frequent travelers like to use.

In addition, if your phone supports an eSIM option, you can use an eSIM instead of buying a card in Greece. This will save you some time as you won’t have to find a shop and go through the procedure.

These are some of the companies that I am aware of which come highly recommended. Note that these SIM deals are generally more expensive than a Greek SIM card:

  • Trip Roaming

As I haven’t used an eSIM in Greece yet, I don’t have a personal opinion. If you’ve used any of these, or any others, please comment below with your experience!

hi we have a mobile dongle for our house in Greece with the price of data card on the uk can you recommend witch is the best Greek company to get e data sim card thanks M Thompson

In my experience, Cosmote has the best coverage in Greece, so I suppose it would be the same for esims.

Hi, I am grateful to rich information over SIM-card in Greece, but I am wondering if these offers have some kind deal of 100minutes free call and so on??? In hotel, data volume is not a problem at all but the calls are really a headack, right?

Second, no travellers in Greece will only stay there for the whole holiday months (normally two months or more) and will move to other countries such as Italy, France, UK or Danmark. I would like to know which prepaid SIM (first arrival country) can be used in these countries as enough money is re-charges when on the way travelling?

Unfortunately, Greece has the worst deals. You can use any EU SIM card in any EU country, the UK is a bit different but as far as I know it depends on the provider and how new the SIM card is (e.g. my Greek SIM card which I’ve had for several years works fine in the UK, I believe that the same deal won’t work for new cards but I might be wrong). You could get a SIM card in your country of entry (EU) and then see how it works in the other countries. Hope this helps!

Do you know if there a shop in Piraeus where I can get a Greek SIM Card?

I’ll be staying at the Achillion Hotel and prefer a Cosmote card.

Hi – yes there’s one 2 minutes from your hotel – Iroon Polytechneiou 42-44 🙂

Greece SIM Cards: Detailed Guide

Greece is one of those lands with so much glorious scenery and interesting history around every corner that traveling around the country can be like walking in a dream. On your Greece trip, it’s really important to stay connected so you can get directions, look something up, share photos, and keep in touch with folks back home. Getting a local Greece SIM card for your unlocked phone is most convenient and economical.

Table of Contents

Greece SIM Card

1. Should I Buy a New SIM Card for My Greece Trip?

greece sim card

For most travelers, getting a local Greece SIM card is one of the best mobile internet option in Greece . The main benefits are:

  • Cheaper data rates and calls than using your home country’s SIM card
  • Avoid expensive roaming charges from your home network
  • Better network coverage from a local provider in Greece

If you’re only making short trips into Greece and not relying heavily on mobile data, you could potentially just use your own cell phone in Greece and enable roaming in Greece on your existing SIM card. But a Greece SIM is usually the better choice for longer trips, or if you’ll be using apps like Google Maps to get around.

Some key things to check before buying a Greece SIM:

  • Your phone must be unlocked to use a different SIM card
  • Confirm your phone is compatible with Greece mobile networks
  • Disable data roaming on your home SIM before inserting the Greece SIM

As long as your phone meets those criteria, purchasing a Greece SIM card is a very straightforward process once you arrive in the country.

2. Greece SIM Card Types – Which One is the Best for Tourists?

There are a couple of different options for Greece tourist SIM cards:

Additional Considerations:

  • Coverage:  When choosing a SIM card, be sure to factor into consideration the coverage area of the carrier. But one carrier may have better coverage in some parts of Greece than another.
  • Price:  Prices for SIM cards also depend upon the carrier and plan. Compare prices before buying.
  • Data:  It is especially necessary to choose a plan with enough data if you want to use a lot of data.
  • International calling:  You must choose a plan that includes this option if you need to make international calls.
  • Roaming:  You must choose a plan with roaming if you are planning on traveling outside of Greece.

Recommendation:

If you are in Greece for a short time, then prepaid is best. It's convenient, flexible, and easy to buy. If you will stay in Greece for a longer period, then you will need to consider a postpaid SIM card which usually has better data speeds and gives more data than prepaid cards.

3. How Much Data Is Enough for a Prepaid Tourist SIM Card for Greece?

Data usage on your Greece SIM card comes down to your travel style and preferences. Here are some typical data ranges to consider:

  • Light use: 1 – 2 GB data for a short trip with basic maps/messaging usage
  • Moderate use: 3 – 5 GB for occasional photo uploads, light social media use
  • Heavy use: 5 – 10+ GB for extensive maps, daily uploads, video calling, etc

To maximize your data, utilize WiFi whenever possible and download maps offline via Google Maps. Most Greece SIMs also offer free unlimited WhatsApp usage which is very handy.

5 GB is a sensible amount for a 1-2 week trip focused on sightseeing and sharing your adventures. But plan extra data if you’ll stream videos or frequently have video calls. Top-up options are available if needed.

4. How Much Does a Greece SIM Card Cost?

Greece prepaid SIM cards are very affordable, usually between $10 – $30 for the SIM card including some bonus data on activation.

If buying an eSIM, the activation cost is similar or slightly higher, around $5 – $40 depending on data allowance.

Shop between the main Greece providers like Cosmote, Vodafone, and Nova to compare the latest prepaid SIM pricing.

5. Greece eSIM – Alternative to Physical SIM Cards

Greece eSIM

Instead of using a plastic SIM card, an eSIM is a digital SIM profile installed directly on your phone. eSIMs are still relatively new globally but becoming more widespread.

Here are some key advantages of using a Greece eSIM for your trip:

  • Convenience of ordering online and activating before you arrive
  • Quick and easy to switch data plans via the provider’s app
  • Avoid visiting stores to buy a physical SIM card

A few limitations to note currently with eSIMs in Greece:

  • eSIM options are still limited, mainly from provider greeceesim.com .
  • Data allotments tend to be lower than regular SIMs
  • Compatible with newer iPhone and Android models only

For short vacations where you won’t need huge data, eSIMs provide a handy alternative to queuing up for a standard SIM card on arrival. As more Greek networks add eSIM capabilities, this will become an even more viable option.

Explore Greece freely with an affordable local data plan for your mobile. Download a Greece eSIM from greeceesim.com and get reliable 4G coverage throughout your trip from €5. No SIM swapping is needed – just scan and you’re online. Order by midnight for same-day activation upon arrival. Buy Greece eSIM now at greeceesim.com .

6. Where to Buy a Greece SIM Card?

You have a couple options of for where to purchase your Greece SIM card, either before you arrive or once you land in the country:

6.1. Buy eSIM online

As eSIMs are digital, you can conveniently order them online ahead of your trip and remotely activate the SIM profile on your device. Providers like greeceesim.com offer Greece eSIMs via website for delivery via email.

Benefits of pre-ordering online:

  • Skip buying a SIM in person on arrival
  • Faster airport exit without a SIM store stop
  • Guaranteed SIM access, which can be activated when you land

The main limitation is that eSIM data allotments are generally lower than regular SIMs. But ordering online works well if you just need basic data.

6.2. Buy a physical SIM Card

If you prefer a regular plastic SIM, you can easily purchase those once you arrive in Greece. SIM cards in Athens are sold at convenience stores, kiosks, and phone provider shops across the country.

You can often find SIM card at Greece airports upon arrival , however, prices may be inflated so shops in the city tend to be cheaper. You will need to show your passport when registering the SIM.

Benefits of buying in person:

  • Wider range of providers and packages
  • Larger data bundles available for physical SIMs
  • Ask staff for advice on the best deal for your trip

The downside is spending time lining up and registering the SIM, so arriving with an eSIM can save the hassle. But physical SIMs offer maximum choice and value if you need lots of data.

7. How to Use Greece SIM

Using your Greece SIM card is very straightforward. Follow these steps once you’ve purchased your SIM:

  • Insert – Eject tray from your phone and insert the nano/micro SIM
  • Activate – Power on your phone and activate the SIM using the provided instructions
  • Top-up – Purchase a data pack and add credit for calls if needed
  • Connect – Disable data roaming on your home SIM to connect solely via Greece SIM
  • Setup – Add SIM to your contacts, set data limits to conserve usage

Then you’re all ready to use data, messaging, calls, etc through your Greece SIM card! If you have dual SIM functionality, be sure to manually select the Greece SIM for data. Keep track of your usage so you don’t need to buy a top-up on the go.

8. Best Mobile Operators for Greece SIM Cards

Cosmote, Vodafone, and Nova are Greece’s biggest mobile networks. Both carriers provide pre-paid SIM cards for tourists.

Here is a brief overview of each Greece mobile operator :

  • Cosmote : Greek mobile leader Cosmote has the best network coverage and speeds.
  • Vodafone Greece: The second largest mobile operator in Greece, Vodafone’s network is similar to Cosmote. It also provides a wide range of prepaid and postpaid SIM card plans.
  • Nova: Nova is the third largest mobile operator in Greece. Its network is not as extensive but slightly less than that of Cosmote and Vodafone. But it still provides good signal and speed coverage in most places Nova has various pre-paid and post-paid SIM card plans.

Which operator should you choose?

Based on Opensignal’s latest Greece mobile network report , Cosmote is the one to choose for the best network coverage and speeds. However, Nova may be the better option if you’re on a budget. It offers good value for money.

9. Tips for Saving Data for Greece SIM Card

To make the most of your Greece SIM data allowance, here are some tips:

  • Connect to free WiFi whenever possible in hotels, cafes, etc.
  • Download offline maps on Google Maps and use GPS mode to avoid data drain
  • Switch off auto app updates and disable background data usage
  • Limit streaming of videos, and music and minimize video calls
  • Turn on data saving mode in your phone settings
  • Monitor usage closely and top-up promptly if needed

Following these tips and check guides to use your phone in Greece will help you control data consumption and stay below your prepaid SIM allowance during your Greece visit.

Do I need to register my Greece SIM card?

Yes, you’ll need to provide your passport details when purchasing any Greek SIM card, both prepaid and contract types. This meets local registration laws.

Can I use a Greece SIM across Europe?

Your Greece SIM will provide cheap rates inside Greece. But roaming charges apply if you travel into other European countries. Consider a pan-European SIM if visiting multiple countries.

Are Greece SIM cards secure?

Leading Greek providers use secure networks and encryption standards. Use common sense with protecting your phone and SIM like avoiding public WiFi for sensitive tasks.

How can I recharge my Greece SIM?

Top-up credits are available through provider websites, mobile apps, or in-person at convenience stores, kiosks, and phone shops across the country.

What language are the Greece SIM cards?

SIM cards are available in both Greek and English languages. English is commonly spoken in major cities and tourist areas.

11. Conclusion

The most convenient route for cheap data and calls while in this lovely land is a Greece SIM card. Setup is also easy with prepaid and eSIM options. Cosmote and Vodafone are major providers with reliable connections across mainland Greece and islands. At just $10-$20 for data bundles, a tourist SIM is an excellent investment to complement your Greece trip preparation.

Greece SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Dec 3, 2023 | Europe , Greece , SIM Cards , Travel Tips

Visiting Greece soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Greece SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Greece in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

That said, if you’re traveling to other countries in Europe, you should be able to use the same SIM card because most SIM card providers also offer coverage in other European countries.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Greece. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a Uber, or translate Greek – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Greece.

Note that your mobile phone provider may already offer Greece coverage if you’re European. If that’s the case, you won’t need a SIM card for your adventures in Greece.

Greece

Best SIM Cards In Greece

If you’re traveling in Greece, we recommend using a SIM card from Cosmote, Vodafone Greece, Wind, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Europe , you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other European countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Greece

You can buy a Europe prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a European prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Cosmote, Vodafone Greece, and Wind.

Athens Greece

Cosmote SIM Cards

Cosmote is the biggest mobile network in Greece. Cosmote has three networks of its own offering SIM plans, Cosmote, Frog, and What’s Up.

  • Cosmote Plan: 1.5 GB data, Unlimited calls to everyone (within Greece) EUR 13.50 / month
  • Frog Plan: 13 GB data, 200 minutes in Greece for EUR 10.90 / 30 days
  • What’s Up Plan: Unlimited Calls: 1.5 GB data, Unlimited calls to everyone (within Greece) EUR 13.50 / month

As a visitor, the best option of the three is probably Frog, as it offers the most data.

Vodafone Greece SIM Cards

Vodafone Greece has two different prepaid plans available:

  • 30 days, 15 GB data, 120 minutes of international calls for EUR 17.90
  • 30 days, 18 GB data for EUR 17.90

As you can see, it’s more expensive than Cosmote, but these bundles have more data, which can be helpful.

Wind SIM Cards

Wind offer three different plans for prepaid customers:

  • W 3 GB: 30 days, 3 GB of data for EUR 26.99
  • W 10 GB: 30 days, 10 GB of data for EUR 32
  • W Unlimited: 30 days, unlimited data for EUR 39

Overall, we think Wind is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Greece Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card works in more than 30 countries and gives you 20BG of data for 14 days. Greece is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and ensure the countries you plan to visit are listed.

Another option is to purchase a prepaid European SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer multiple data plans in Greece.

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Europe.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Greece

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s one of the best options to get data in Greece.

Curious? Learn more about eSIMs on esimroamers.com .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. And I first tried it when visiting my family in Canada. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo . Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIMs in Greece.

Airalo Greece

If you want to buy an eSIM for Greece, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for Europe and Greece. I’ve been using Airalo in Europe for several months, and it works fine.

Here are the options available for Greece :

  • Meraki Mobile: 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $5
  • Meraki Mobile: 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $9
  • Meraki Mobile: 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $12
  • Meraki Mobile: 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $15
  • Meraki Mobile: 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $25
  • Meraki Mobile: 20 GB, valid for 30 days for $49

Airalo esim Greece

Here’s an overview of the options available in Europe :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $5
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $13
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $20
  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $37
  • 50 GB, valid for 90 days for $100
  • 100 GB, valid for 180 days for $185

The options mentioned above are part of Eurolink and offer coverage in 39 countries, including Greece.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 87 countries, including Greece.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 3 GB, valid for 15 days for $24
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $35
  • 10 GB, valid for 60 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 180 days for $89

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country. Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip. In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Greece

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Greece or even an eSIM for your travels in Greece is pretty easy. You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in Europe without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a European SIM card .

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Greece if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card. Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Buying a Sim Card In Greece – Travelers Buying Guide (2024)

So you’re headed off to the sunny shores of Greece to sit by the crystal clear waters, wander ancient ruins and eat your weights worth of Feta! You’ve packed your budgy smugglers, got a fist full of Euros, charged your camera … but there’s one thing you’ve overlooked! Your phone data!

Trust us, we’ve been there. You’re hyped up to share your beachside selfies on Insta, call your Mum from the Acropolis or use Maps to find your way home of an evening! All the while you’re racking up a massive bill that’s going to sting you when you get back home and bring you back down to earth with a bang!

Greece is somewhere, as a team, we’ve visited heaps over the past few years. So we’ve got plenty of experience when it comes to buying a local sim card. Forget your connection dropping just as your TikTok is about to finish uploading or a massive bill because your Nan wanted to chat to Giorgos from the bar!

A Greek sim card is cheap and easy to organise, we should know, we’ve done it enough times! In this post we’ll tell you everything you need to know about choosing and buying a sim card for Greece.

We’ll take a look at some Greece sim card providers, prices, coverage and a couple of other things to consider as well as sharing our experiences buying and using sim cards in Greece.

Why Buy a Sim Card For Greece?

Like it or not, the reality of travel in 2024 is that we all rely on our phones a lot. We use them to find legit cabs, navigate strange cities and translate our desperate pleas for help … as well as showing off on insta!

When deciding between a local or international sim , there are a few things to note. Whilst your native sim card may well technically work in Greece, this doesn’t mean you should ever rely on it. Firstly, overseas sim card use is typically, seriously bloody expensive. There are daily roaming charges, inflated data prices, and in many cases you will even be charged if somebody calls you!

It gets worse, as non-local sims also have a tendency to stop working completely at crucial moments. One minute you’re happily using your phone’s overpriced data to find your way across Athens’ neighbourhoods and then suddenly – nothing – as you move into a different coverage zone and lose all connectivity. Trust us, this anecdote unfortunately comes from personal experience!

Note that any other EU or even European sim will probably work seamlessly in Greece.

Best Hostels in Corfu

For these reasons and more, if you are visiting Greece , then you should get a sim card.

Of course, the notable exception here is EU residents. If you fall into this category then your EU sim should work exactly as it does at home. There will be no extra charges and your provider * should* have arrangements with local networks to ensure an uninterrupted service.

Note – ‘Should’ doesn’t always mean ‘Is’. My EU sim card sometimes failed when I was in other EU and Schengen countries. If you are an EU resident planning on spending a lot of time in Greece, then you may still wish to consider sorting a local sim.

Buying a Sim Card For Greece – Things To Consider

Choosing a Sim Card for Greece is like choosing a pair of shoes or choosing a wife; some work for you better than others depending on what your personal needs are and of course, depending on your budget.

Let’s break down the major considerations;

We all love a bargain, especially in a semi-expensive country like Greece . Getting a good deal is hard-wired into us broke backpackers so obviously price is always going to be a determining factor. The primary aim here is to identify who is offering the most data/minutes at the best price.

You will generally find that some providers offer really good deals if you buy big, which leads us to the next point.

Pay close attention to how much data you are actually being offered. A lot of sim card providers try to tempt you in by offering low prices, but knowing full well that you will burn through the allocated data in no time, forcing you into a pricey top up.

A good idea is to check your personal average data use, and then factor in the fact that you will probably be using more than usual as you rely on maps and translation apps.

This one is also often overlooked. Not all network coverages are equal. Some providers offer fantastic coverage across an entire nation whereas others specialise in particular areas.

This is very pertinent with Greece in particular as a lot of providers excel in covering the mainland, but don’t quite do the islands so well and vice versa. However, as a general guide, you can expect at least some form of 4G on all of the islands and either 4G or 5G on the mainland.

It is worth having a rough idea of where in Greece you will stay and where you will be going before making a purchase. It’s also usually worth paying a bit more to get better coverage. I mean, cheap data is pretty pointless if you can’t even get connected.

Map of Where to Stay Greece

Bureaucracy

These days, you can usually get a sim card pretty quickly, easily, and without too much hassle. Therefore you should try to avoid companies who insist on too much paperwork, who want too much information, or who take too long to get you set up.

There are a few exceptions to this, such as police states like Pakistan and Russia but these are the minority. Oh, and getting a sim card in India is always going to be a nightmare because India is India.

One thing to consider is whether the sim you are buying has an indefinite lifespan or an expiration date. Some will stop working (after say 30 or 60 days) and cannot be topped up. Others will last forever (plastic never dies …) as long as you keep topping them up.

This isn’t really a massive issue if you are visiting on a one-off, two-week vacation but may become an issue if your plans are open-ended, or if you plan on coming back in the future.

A new country, a new contract, a new piece of plastic – booooring. Instead, buy an eSIM!

An eSIM works just like an app: you buy it, you download it, and BOOM! You’re connected the minute you land. It’s that easy.

Is your phone eSIM ready? Read about how e-Sims work or click below to see one of the top eSIM providers on the market and  ditch the plastic .

Where To Buy a Sim Card For Greece

There are loads of places to buy sim cards from in Greece. You can buy from the airport, from a phone shop, or even on the street. You can even buy one from this thing they have called the Internet.

Where to Stay in Athens

In The Airport

One classic option is to buy a sim card at the airport the minute you land. This means that you get it sorted immediately and can get online right away to book yourself an Uber if you wish. The staff at airport Sim card kiosks almost always speak English, are very helpful, and will make sure that everything is working before you leave.

There are however some downsides.

Firstly, you will almost definitely pay a seriously inflated price and can always get a much better deal by shopping around. There is also often a queue at these kiosks and you can be kept waiting a while to get sorted. Finally, if you happen to land at your destination in the middle of the night or early in the morning, the desk may well be closed.

In terms of Greek Airports, the one in Athens has a Vodafone store offering the following options;

  • €22,50 = 12 GB data in Greece valid for 15 days.
  • €22,50 = 7 GB data in Greece + 120 minutes international + 120 minutes for Greece valid for 15 days.

At the time of writing, we are not sure whether this is the case with the smaller airports on the islands.

There are cell phone stores dotted across the cities of the entire world. If you are able to get into a city centre or a shopping mall then you can have your pick or phone stores and compare sim card deals.

Note that the older generations in Greece don’t always speak English, but the younger ones tend to have a pretty good grasp of it. Therefore the chances are that at least somebody in any given phone store will be able to assist you.

Let’s take a look at the in-store packages offered by Vodafone. The prices and deals are way much better than in the airport.

  • €8,50 = 7 GB data for 15 days.
  • €8,50 = 3 GB data for 15 days + international calling + texting.
  • €17 = 7 GB data for 30 days + international calling + texting.

On The Street

One of the fairly unique things about Greece is that you can pick up sim cards on the street from licensed sim card salespeople. They are easy to spot as they will be wearing the colourful, branded uniforms of whichever organisation they work for. They are commonly found at the entrance to public transport hubs and shopping malls.

greece SIM card

Some of you may be uneasy sharing personal info and ID details with people on the street but there really isn’t too much to worry about.  The street vendors are typically quite young meaning they tend to speak English pretty well. We spotted the street vendors in Athens & in neighbourhoods of Thessaloniki but again, we’re not so sure about their presence on the islands.

Of course, you could just buy your sim card for Greece online. Most major international networks will post it out to your home address. Do make sure you order it long enough before your trip begins though in order to avoid it turning up in your mailbox after you have already entered Greece!

Surfing the web to find the best Greece sim card options can be time-consuming and overwhelming, so thankfully we’ve done the hard work for you and made some choice selections which you can find below. It’ll make preparing and packing for Greece that little bit easier.

Personally, we’ve managed to get the best deals either online or at a store. When it comes to convenience, we always try to buy online because it takes away the language barrier and you can always be sure you know what you’re getting. Not only that, but we always prefer to have access to the internet before we land so we can organise our ride from the airport if we’re arriving late.

Best Greek Sim Card Providers

There are loads of different sim cards for Greece options and providers ranging from big international network carriers to niche providers who only operate in Greece.

Here are some of the best deals for sim cards in Greece.

Founded in 2010, GigSky is a Palo Alto, California-based mobile technology company that provides e-SIM and SIM card data services to international travellers. Unlike many (maybe even most) other eSIM companies , GigSky are actually a Network Operator themselves in their own right, and partner with over 400 other carriers worldwide. This means they have access to a lot more transistors than most other competitors ensuring stronger service and letter outage.

Gigsky simcard

While they don’t offer local phone numbers, you can still make and receive calls via WhatsApp, Signal, Skype or whatever using the general data allowances that come as part of their eSim packages.

GigSky also offers a cutting-edge ‘ Cellular at Sea ’ package that may just be the world’s first anywhere-at-sea eSIM . The package will work anywhere in the maritime world and pretty much anywhere on the ship too.

We have tried a LOT of different sim companies and GigSky is our top pick on account of their excellent coverage, fair prices and easy-to-use app. Of course, if they did offer local numbers that would be even better.

GigSky offers a range of packages including a tasty ‘try before you buy’ deal that gives you 100MB of data for 7 days.

  • 1GB – $3.99 – 7 Days
  • 3 GB – $10.99 – 15 Days
  • 5 GB – $16.99 – 30 Days
  • 10 GB – $31.99 – 30 Days

Jetpac eSim

As our world gets smaller, staying connected while travelling becomes not just a luxury but an absolute necessity. Enter Jetpac, a cutting-edge travel eSIM provider promising seamless connectivity at low costs, across the globe.

Based out of Singapore Jetpac offers packages, designed primarily for travellers and Digital Nomads. They offer various data plans that can be used across many countries, and the service includes features like free airport lounge access if your flight is delayed.

Good news, Jetpac eSIMs are compatible with a range of devices, including many models from Apple, Samsung, and Google. If you’re wondering what the heck is an eSIM , don’t panic, it’s simple and straightforward to activate a Jetpac eSIM. Users need to sign up on the Jetpac website or app, choose a plan that fits their travel needs, and then scan a QR code to install the eSIM on their device.

We love Jetpac for its ease of setup and reliable connectivity. JetPac makes it a handy tool for international travel, ensuring continuous access to mobile data across multiple destinations. While they don’t offer local numbers, we love that most of their packs last for 30 days by default so you can just concentrate on how much data you need.

  • Sim costs $7.95 and credit costs $1 per day.
  • 500MB 4G data for unlimited minutes and unlimited texts, which can be used all over Europe as well as the UK.

TravSim Three UK

Best SIM Cards in Greece: Where to Buy and Cost

greece travel sim

Key Takeaways

  • Opt for a SIM card from a reputable provider that offers extensive coverage across Greece . This ensures that you can stay connected in most areas, including cities, towns, and rural regions.
  • Consider whether you will primarily use data for browsing, streaming, or uploading photos , and choose a plan accordingly.
  • Prepaid options provide flexibility as you can control your spending and top up as needed. Postpaid plans may offer additional benefits such as higher data allowances or inclusive roaming options.
  • If you plan to travel within the European Union or to other countries, consider SIM cards that provide affordable or inclusive roaming options .

From the ancient temples of Athens to the sun-drenched alleys of Santorini, you'll find delights around every corner while visiting Greece. As with any vacation, you must attend to some important details before your trip. One essential task is ensuring you can use your mobile phone while exploring.

Prepaid SIM cards can help you stay in touch and use all the device's features without facing a huge bill when you return home. It's not difficult to buy a local prepaid SIM card when you know where to go and what to look for.

What Is a SIM Card?

sim card in greece 2

A SIM card is a subscriber identity module or subscriber identification module. A small memory card that fits inside your mobile device, a SIM card contains information about who the phone belongs to and what network it's using.

It allows you to use any of the connectivity features on the phone; without it, you might be able to access WiFi or take photos, but you won't be able to make calls, send texts, or use the carrier's internet network.

You need to buy a Greece SIM card because the card currently in your device works with a U.S. mobile provider's network. Switching to a local SIM card ensures you can use your phone since it confirms that you've paid the fees to use the Greek mobile network.

Why You Need a SIM Card in Greece

sim card in greece 3

Many travelers assume they can use their mobile devices overseas if they have an international calling plan from their wireless carrier. You can purchase a global calling plan, but it will be significantly more expensive than buying a local SIM card in Greece. You might also struggle to make calls or use data without local network coverage.

santorini greek

Buying a Greek SIM card ensures you can use your phone when needed. It also helps you travel safely and without hassles. Consider these five benefits of having phone service you can count on:

  • WiFi isn't always reliable:  WiFi is widely available in Greece, and you'll likely be able to access free WiFi in your hotel and other public areas. Public WiFi isn't always reliable or secure; you may be without a connection when you need it most.
  • Use your phone to buy tickets, book transportation, etc.:  A working mobile phone makes planning your activities and  getting around Greece  easier. Many tours and attractions  allow guests to pre-purchase tickets online. You also need a working phone to use rideshare apps, make contactless payments, and more.
  • Use your translation app:  Many people in Greece speak English, but you're still likely to encounter the occasional  language barrier . Make sure you can access your translation app with a working phone.
  • Download maps and directions while exploring the country:  It's easy to get lost while exploring ancient Athens or  Santorini's streets . Even if you download Google Maps to use offline, a reliable internet connection ensures you never get too lost.
  • Share photos and updates:  With so many beautiful spots to photograph throughout the Greek islands and unique experiences, you'll definitely want to share them on social media. This requires a strong connection.

The Major Wireless Carriers in Greece

sim cards in greece 1

Three major wireless carriers serve Greece: Vodafone Greece, Cosmote, and Wind , which serve as the sim card providers.

All sell prepaid SIM cards for visitors, and if you are only visiting for a few days — and spending most of your time in major destinations like Athens, Santorini, and Mykonos — any of their pay-as-you-go options will work.

zakynthos greece

Cosmote typically has the most comprehensive and reliable network coverage if you plan to explore Greece beyond the cities, while it also offers the best-prepaid sim card deals. Remember that if you already have a SIM card from another European Union country, you don't need to purchase another card in Greece.

The  EU banned roaming charges in 2017 , so if your trip to Greece is part of an extensive trip around the European countries, you can continue using the card you bought before arrival with free roaming for mobile data and more.

How to Buy a SIM Card in Greece

acropolis

To purchase a physical SIM card in Greece, visit a local vendor. You can find Greek SIM cards for sale throughout the country, including:

  • Major airports like Athens International Airport.
  • Cell phone stores and Greek SIM card providers like a Vodafone store.
  • Street vendors in larger cities such as Athens city center.
  • Designated retailers; for example, you can find Cosmote SIM cards at a chain of stores called Germanos.

You aren't going to find the best SIM card deals at Athens airport; often, street vendors have the best offers. They will help you select the best plan to meet your needs during your trip.

santorini

For instance, you can purchase plans that include data only or data and local and international calling for anywhere from a single day to several months.

When you visit a local SIM card seller, they will present you with the best options. You'll have to show your passport, and the seller will photocopy it.

Only travelers aged 18 and older can buy SIM cards in Greece, but if you are traveling with younger people, you may purchase more than one SIM card at a time using your identification.

Once you make the purchase, the vendor will show you how to install your Greece prepaid SIM card on your device. Some phones have dual SIM capabilities; otherwise, you'll need to replace the existing card with a Greek SIM.

Otherwise, you can purchase Drimsim online - click here for more details.

The Best SIM Card Deals in Greece

When you buy SIM cards in Greece, the vendor will charge a flat fee of at least 5 euros for the card, plus a minimum top-up of 10 euros. With the minimum 12% tax on SIM card top-up vouchers, you'll have a credit of about just under nine Euros to start. We strongly recommend purchasing Greece SIM card deals with your credits since it will not take long to use them up otherwise.

zakynthos

Wireless providers in Greece offer various packages to meet traveler needs. The minimum package for a SIM card for Greece costs about 8 euros and includes 500 MB of data and 250 calling minutes for use over 30 days. You can purchase top-up vouchers to increase the available time.

Most travelers use more data than calling time, so consider adding a data bundle to your SIM card package. Unlimited data packages start at 1.5 euros for one day, or you can choose a 5MB package for 8.5 euros. You can mix and match packages for your needs if you purchase enough credit to cover the costs.

greece acropolis

Some carriers offer special tourist packages designed for the average traveler. Typically only available at the airport, these packages combine data, local, and international calling for one price, plus an activation fee.

Vodafone offers a plan with 15GB of data, 200 local calling minutes, and 150 international calling minutes for 35 euros, plus activation. You will most likely find better SIM card deals from local vendors, but if you want to use your phone immediately when you arrive and don't want to compare plans, this is a viable option.

santorini greece

You can purchase SIM cards with tourist packages for the best coverage in all major Greek airports , including:

  • Thessaloniki

If you purchase a SIM card from a local vendor instead of a phone store, inquire about specials. Many providers offer summer specials that provide unlimited data for less than 10 euros. A limited-time offer may offer the most value compared to mixing and matching plans.

The Three Top SIM Cards in Greece

greek cat

Most travelers choose one of the following SIM cards in Greece:

1. Cosmote SIM Card Greece: Cosmote offers the most comprehensive coverage map and the fastest data speeds. A Cosmopote prepaid SIM card is argued to be the most reliable in the remote areas of Greece outside the major cities.

2. Vodafone SIM Card Greece: The most affordable option for travelers to stay connected, Vodafone, Greece, does not have as much coverage in Greece. Make sure it will work in your destination before purchasing. However, Vodafone is the largest cellular carrier in Europe, so if you plan to visit other countries in the EU, this is a good choice.

3. Wind SIM Card Greece: The least popular and most expensive option for Greek travelers, it's still worth considering if you want to compare plans or have limited choices in your destination.

Make Sure to Unlock Your Phone

greek houses

Before you buy a SIM card in Greece, unlock your phone. This means that your device is not tied to a specific carrier. If you have a locked phone, the SIM card you buy will not work, forcing you to pay exorbitant rates to use your carrier's international network if you did not arrange for international service.

Check with your wireless carrier before leaving for Greece for help unlocking the device. You may be able to  unlock it by completing a formal request .

Final Thoughts

Accessing the internet and staying in touch while you explore one of the most beautiful parts of Europe is easy when you buy a SIM card in Greece for your mobile phone.

Whether you're exploring on your own or visiting the  ancient archaeological sites of Crete  on a guided tour, you can rest assured that you have the network coverage and data you need to share your snapshots and keep in touch with family and friends, all while enjoying your Greece itineraries .

Don’t waste money on high roaming charges, read my recommendation and order an e-sim card for Greece on the internet and get connected in just a couple clicks. Below you will find up to date prices as per April 2024 and all specifications per e-sim card including info about EU data roaming.

Also find out where and when to order an e-sim card, a comparison with local prepaid sim cards for Greece and of course links to directly order your e-sim card for traveling to Greece online.

Since 2012 I am traveling the world continuously and eventually turned my passion for traveling into a lifestyle and became a full time nomadic travel blogger . That is why I constantly travel to a different country and pretty much every week I need to look for a new sim card to stay connected.

In 2022 I visited 62 countries and in 2023 I traveled to 34 countries so imagine how many different prepaid and e-sim cards I used in the last two years.

In the past I used to buy a local prepaid sim card on arrival in every country, but nowadays I mostly use e-sim cards to stay connected when traveling abroad.

Helping other travelers to save money while traveling the world is one of the reasons I started this travel blog. Providing essential travel tips is what made me start writing sim card guides about every country I visited and now on Traveltomtom you can already find more than 200 sim card guides from all over the world.

Of course I also wrote a complete guide for buying a prepaid sim card for Greece in 2024 .

My recommendation

Traveltomtom rates the two e-sims as the best e-sim cards for traveling to Greece in 2024:

1. My European eSIM from Bouygues Telecom - $44.90 USD

bouygues esim card for greece

  • 30 GB data in all of Europe
  • Unlimited calling in all of Europe
  • Valid for 30 days

2.  Travel Basic+ Bouygues Telecom - $21.90 USD

  • 15 GB data in all of Europe
  • Valid for 15 days

You can order both Bouygues Telecom e-sim cards for Greece via SimOptions .

Both Bouygues Telecom e-sim cards come with a phone number from France and they support incoming calls and sms and they come with unlimited calls throughout all of Europe as well as free EU data roaming.

In fact, the Bouygues Telecom e-sim cards are therefore also rated as one of the best e-sim card for traveling to Europe in 2024.

If you are going on a Europe trip and visiting multiple countries then check out my list of the best prepaid and e-sim cards for traveling in Europe . You will find this Bouygues Telecom on top of the list of course.

There are 2 very important things to check before ordering an e-sim card for Greece or in general before using an e-sim card.

Unlocked phones only

Make sure your phone is unlocked. E-sim cards only work in unlocked phones. If you are not sure if your phone is unlocked then contact your mobile internet provider in your home country.

In general phones from Europe, Asia and the Middle East tend to be unlocked. Phones from North America are often locked.

If your smartphone is locked that means it does not allow another prepaid sim card or e-sim card to operate in the device. You can easily unlock your phone, but depending on your mobile internet provider you will be charged a fee for unlocking your phone.

E-sim compatible phones only

Second, and equally important: e-sim cards only work if your smartphone supports e-sim cards, also called e-sim compatible. All newer smartphones support e-sim cards. If you are not sure if your phone is e-sim compatible then simply go to Google and type in your mobile phone model in the search bar and ask if it is e-sim compatible. You will get the answer instantly.

If your phone is NOT e-sim compatible then there is no other solution and you can NOT use an e-sim card for traveling to Greece.

However, you can still order a sim card for Greece on the internet before your trip. Check out Traveltomtom’s complete guide for buying a prepaid sim card for Greece in 2024  or find out everything you need to know about international sim cards for traveling abroad in 2024 .

Comparison of the best e-sim cards for Greece

There are multiple website on the internet that sell e-sim cards for Greece. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Greece from one of the well-known e-sim card providers that have proven to be reliable operators.

As of April 2024 the mobile internet operators in Greece do not sell e-sim cards for tourists, they only provide physical prepaid sim cards. Luckily you can order e-sim cards for Greece easily online.

These are the 3 big e-sim card providers and they sell great e-sim card plans for Greece:

Nowadays, you can buy an e-sim card for pretty much every country around the world. Order directly from one of the above e-sim card providers and instantly receive your e-sim card in your email. But before you buy an e-sim card first read all my tips below.

SimOptions also offers international prepaid sim cards for Greece . These are pre-activated physical prepaid sim cards and will be delivered to your home address before your trip to Greece and it is plug and play when you arrive in the Greece.

Airalo and Nomad only sell e-sim cards for Greece.

SimOptions is a very reliable e-sim card provider and Traveltomtom has used SimOptions uncountable times in more than 50 countries around the world. I can totally recommend using SimOptions for ordering your Greece e-sim card.

Why using SimOptions? They offer e-sim cards including calling and texting. Airalo and Nomad only offer data-only e-sim cards.

simoptions esim card plans for greece 2024

Here are the SimOptions data-only e-sim cards for Greece:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $7.90 USD
  • 3 GB data for 15 days = $12.90 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $17.90 USD

These data-only e-sim cards are provided by SimOptions and are only valid in Greece. Unfortunately they don’t specify which mobile network operator in Greece they use, neither is there information if these e-sim cards are 5G ready. Trust me, when they would be 5G ready they would mention it, so the max data speed on these Greece e-sim cards from SimOptions is 4G/LTE.

These SimOptions e-sim cards for Greece do NOT come with a phone number and they do not offer incoming/outgoing calls or sms. The validity of these e-sim cards is 1 year and the credit validity starts instantly after installing the e-sim card, even if you are not in Greece.

The above international e-sim cards for Greece are valid all over Europe and they include free EU data roaming. The best thing about these e-sim cards for Greece is that they also include calling and texting.

Unfortunately only one of them is 5G ready, the rest only supports 4G/LTE. These international e-sim cards for Greece are also valid for 1 year, but the credit validity starts only when the e-sim card connects the first time to a supported network. So you can instal the e-sim card even when you are not in Europe yet. For more info check the SimOptions website .

Airalo is another very reputable e-sim card provider that is very much recommended by Traveltomtom. Ordering your e-sim card for Greece through Airalo is done fast and easy. Traveltomtom has used Airalo uncountable times for staying connected when traveling abroad. Very reliable, never an issue and often some of the cheapest e-sim card deals.

Why using Airalo? I found out that Airalo has sometimes cheaper e-sim card deals compared to SimOptions.

Especially if you only use a little bit of data while traveling and need just 1 or 2 GB to stay in touch through WhatsApp, check your email and get directions from Google Maps, Airalo is a great e-sim card for traveling in Greece.

An Airalo e-sim card has to be installed within 1 month and after activation the credit validity starts when it connects the first time to a supported network. Why did Traveltomtom already used more than 100s of e-sim cards? I travel the world full time and I am on the road constantly so pretty much every week I am in a new country, which means I probably buy like 30-40 sim cards per year.

Traveltomtom is on the road to 197, meaning I would like to travel to every country in the world . As of April 2024 I have visited more than 155 countries, still more than 40 to go, but no rush.

What is the cheapest e-sim card for Greece?

cheapest esim card for greece 2024

The cheapest e-sim card for Greece is an e-sim card from Nomad for $4.5 USD with 1 GB data for 7 days. Airalo  has a similar e-sim card plan with 1 GB data for 7 days for $5 USD. Both e-sims are only valid in Greece and do not support calling and texting.

Why ordering an e-sim card for traveling in Greece

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Greece in 2024 and you can arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a sim card shop and swapping physical sim cards. Order online, scan the QR code, follow the steps and you are connected in less than 2 minutes.

The most important reason to get an e-sim card is because we would like to stay connected on our trip to Greece without wasting money on high roaming costs. Our smartphones are pretty useless without a working data connection. Think about ordering a taxi through an app, finding nearby friends, restaurants and bars. Get directions from Google Maps or simply staying in touch with family back home, check your social media apps on long bus rides or your banking apps when paying contactless.

One of the best things about arriving in Greece with an activated e-sim card is that you are online as soon as the plane lands. More about when to instal your e-sim card later.

There are so many reasons to stay connected when traveling to Greece, but the most important reason is that it makes your trip to Greece so much more convenient and fun!

At the same time we don’t want to waste money on high roaming charges. Many mobile internet operators still charge $3 USD per MB for data roaming, that means just opening the Instagram app will already cost you 20 MB * $3 USD = $60 USD! Not kidding… it still is very common in 2024.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to avoid high roaming charges!

International data roaming plans

So what about overseas data roaming plans? Well, not recommended! Why? Did you read the small letters at what data speed you can use data roaming? Pretty much all mobile internet operators limit the data speed for overseas data roaming plans, which means you end up with 3G data speed, but there is 4G/LTE in every tourist destination in Greece.

Uncountable times (mostly American) travel friends asked me: “can I use your hotspot? My data roaming plan is so slow, it is barely working!” Trust me, get yourself an e-sim card or an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Greece. Spend a couple dollars extra and be connected all the time instead of begging for WiFi or a hotspot from friends.

How to activate an e-sim card

Installing and activating an e-sim card is made as simple as possible. Everyone can activate an e-sim card and the instructions on how to are very detailed and will be send to you instantly by email. But wait, it gets even easier. Just scan the QR code.

When you order an e-sim card plan for Greece you instantly receive a summery of your order including a QR-code after the payment is processed.

You will see a summary of your e-sim card order including a QR code on your screen and at the same time you will also receive an email with the same QR code. The email contains instructions on how to instal and activate your Greece e-sim card.

But installing an activating an e-sim card is as easy as scanning the QR code with the same phone where you want to activate the e-sim card on. The QR contains all the information about your Greece e-sim card.

Once you scan the code you will be guided through a couple simple steps and within less than 1 minute your e-sim card is successfully installed.

Very important is that you are connected to the internet when installing your e-sim card otherwise you will get an error and issues can occur.

Tip: if you order an e-sim card with the same phone where you want to instal the e-sim card on then ask a friend or someone nearby to take a photo of the QR code and then you scan the QR code from his/her phone and start the installation.

Where to buy an e-sim card for Greece?

You can only buy an e-sim card for Greece on the internet through an e-sim card provider. There are multiple e-sim card providers for Greece. Traveltomtom compared 6 e-sim card providers and concluded that the above mentioned ones are the best e-sim card providers for traveling to Greece in 2024.

On arrival in Greece

When you arrive in Greece and you want to buy an e-sim card for tourists then you will have to go to an official retail store of an internet provider. How to locate the nearest one to your hotel? Use Google Maps. Not all mobile internet operators in Greece offer e-sim cards for tourists. Most tourist sim card plans are only available as a physical sim card.

In Athens they also sell prepaid sim cards for tourists on the streets, next to the entrances of big metro stations. These official resellers are often students and they sell only physical prepaid sim cards.

For more info about buying a prepaid sim card for tourists in Greece in 2024  click on the link to read my complete guide and comparison of all the mobile internet providers in Greece, including a comparison of the 4G/5G network.

Flying into Greece and landing in Athens then you can also buy a sim card for Greece on arrival. However, there are NO e-sim cards sold at Athens Airport, only physical prepaid sim cards and expect to pay tourist prices. The e-sim cards mentioned in this article are much cheaper.

Check out my complete guide for buying a sim card at Athens Airport .

When to order an e-sim card for Greece?

You can order an e-sim card for Greece pretty much any time you want. Most e-sim cards have to be installed on a phone within 1 month after purchasing, some even within 1 year, so you have time.

More important therefore is when do you instal/activate the e-sim card. The validity of some e-sims start straight after the installation, other e-sim cards only start their validity when they connect the first time to a supported network.

Traveltomtom advices to instal your e-sim card on the day of departure to Greece. Or if you want to maximise your validity then activate your Greece e-sim card on arrival after you connect to the free WiFi of the airport on arrival in Greece. All international airports in Greece have free public WiFi.

How do I know? Traveltomtom also wrote an arrival guide for Athens Airport .

Things to know before ordering an e-sim card for Greece

Here are some general tips for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. These tips do not only apply for Greece e-sim cards, but are things you have to know before buying an e-sim card in general.

Make sure your phone is unlocked

To make sure you didn’t miss this, let me say this again: e-sim cards only work in UNLOCKED phones. If your phone is unlocked then you can use any e-sim card without any problems.

If your phone is locked then ask your mobile internet provider from your home country to unlock your phone before your trip to Greece. It is likely that your mobile internet provider will charge you a fee for unlocking your smartphone.

If you are unable to unlock your phone you can look into getting a pocket WiFi for staying connected when traveling to Greece or better… bring a second unlocked phone on your trip to Greece and use it as a portable WiFi device.

Which smartphones support e-sim cards?

Another very important thing you have to check before buying an e-sim card is if your smartphone supports e-sim cards. If you have any of the latest smartphones then there is no need to worry, all new smartphones of the well known brands support e-sim cards.

The fastest way to find out if your phone is e-sim compatible is by asking Google the question: is my (your phone model) e-sim compatible? Simple as that!

Can I trust these e-sim card providers?

All the e-sim card providers for Greece recommended above ( SimOptions ,  Airalo ,  Nomad ) are reputable e-sim card providers reviewed and tested by Traveltomtom. All of them are licensed third party companies and resellers that partner or work directly with the mobile internet providers in Greece.

Traveltomtom has successfully partnered for several consecutive years with SimOptions and Airalo. Nomad is a fairly new partner of Traveltomtom, but has so far proven to be a reliable e-sim card provider. All e-sim card providers have their own Helpdesk which you can contact may you encounter any problems or in case you want to claim a refund.

Traveltomtom does NOT sell Greece e-sim cards, only RECOMMENDS you to use e-sim cards for traveling to Greece.

Can I keep my phone number from home with a Greece e-sim card?

Yes, you can and this is for many people a reason to order an e-sim card to stay connected when traveling to Greece. An e-sim card can be used next to your physical or e-sim card from your home country at the same time. You do not need a dual-sim phone for using an e-sim card.

So you can have multiple e-sim cards installed on your phone? Yes, no problem at all!

For example: you can turn off the mobile data from your sim card from home but still use it for texting and calling. Your new Greece e-sim card you can be used at the same time just for data to ensure you are not wasting money on high roaming costs.

If your Greece e-sim card also allows you to make phone calls and you want to make a local call in Greece, you simply switch between the sim cards and make a local phone call with your Greece e-sim card.

Switching between physical and e-sim cards is a matter of turning them on/off in the settings.

Can I make phone calls with a Greece e-sim card?

This depends on the type of e-sim card that you order. Only the international e-sim cards from SimOptions offer calling and texting. All the e-sim cards from Nomad and Airalo are data-only.

The international e-sim cards from SimOptions  come with unlimited calling in all of Europe as well as free EU data roaming. Which means you can call to and from any country in Europe to any European phone number at no extra charge. You can also use your data in every country in Europe.

Does a Greece e-sim card come with a phone number?

This also depends on the type of e-sim card that you buy. E-sims that support calls and sms they come with a phone number.

In the above Greece e-sim card comparison you can find all the specifications per e-sim card. All the international e-sim cards from SimOptions come with a phone number, which means they can also receive calls and sms.

Can I use 5G on a Greece e-sim card?

Yes, some of the Greece e-sim cards are now 5G ready. SimOptions sells two international e-sim cards that support 5G and all the Airalo e-sim cards for Greece are also 5G ready as of 2024.

orange 5g esim card for greece 2024

This  Orange Holiday Europe with 50 GB data for 28 days and unlimited calling and texting for $59.90 USD  from SimOptions is another Traveltomtom favorite e-sim card for traveling to Europe

This e-sim card is valid in all of Europe and therefore also rated as one of the best sim cards for traveling to Europe in 2024 .

The  Airalo e-sim cards for Greece  operate on the Nova 5G network, which is actually the weakest 5G network compared to Vodafone and Cosmote. For more info about the 4G/5G network coverage check out Traveltomtom's comparison of the best prepaid sim cards in Greece in 2024 .

Are there e-sim cards for Greece with unlimited data?

None of the by Traveltomtom recommended Greece e-sim cards for tourists include unlimited data.

Even if you would come across e-sim card providers that offer e-sim cards for Greece with unlimited data then make sure the unlimited data is on max data speed. Mostly the data speed is capped after you used X amount of Gigabytes.

Holafly is an e-sim card provider that sells e-sim cards with unlimited data, but does NOT specify what is the exact so-called Fair Use Policy (FUP).

Traveltomtom does NOT recommend Greece e-sim cards with unlimited data plans. There are always restrictions. And on Holafly sim cards I experienced a reduce in data speed after using more than 2 GB per day. When I contacted support they explained me that I had to wait for 24 hours until my data speed was restored to normal.

Those 24 hours were a nightmare as my data speed was barely enough to use WhatsApp. Social media apps were not even loading!

Again, Traveltomtom does NOT recommend e-sim cards for Greece with unlimited data. But if you think you will never use more than 2 GB per day, then this might be your favorite e-sim card.

Via SimOptions you can order the Orange Holiday Europe e-sim card with 50 GB data, which is pretty much a sim card with unlimited data. Because using 50 GB data in just a couple weeks is a lot. Just make sure you are not uploading your whole camera roll to Google Drive or iCloud using data and you will be totally fine.

There are a lot of different specifications per e-sim card. Another reason why I advice you to take a close look at my comparison of the best e-sim cards for traveling to Greece in 2024 before choosing your favorite.

Are e-sim cards the best way to stay connected when traveling to Greece?

E-sim cards are the easiest and fastest way to get data on your phone when traveling to Greece, but are they also the best way to stay connected when traveling to Greece?

There are 3 ways to stay connected when traveling to Greece:

Local prepaid sim cards

International prepaid sim cards, e-sim cards.

Let’s compare e-sim cards, local prepaid sim cards and international prepaid sim cards, for you to find out what is your preferred way of staying connected.

If you use a lot of data then local prepaid sim cards are probably a cheaper way to stay connected, depending on the length of your trip. Local prepaid sim cards often offer bigger data plans than e-sim cards. However, local prepaid sim cards can only be purchased on arrival in Greece in a phone store and NOT on the internet.

More info about the best Greece prepaid sim cards for tourists can be found in my complete guide for buying a sim card for Greece in 2024.

For example in the link above in my comparison of the best prepaid sim cards for tourist in Greece you will find that for €12 EUR ($13 USD) you can buy a local prepaid sim card with unlimited data in Greece + calling minutes.

If this sounds like something you want then on arrival in Greece you will need to find a sim card shop nearby your hotel.

They also sell Vodafone sim cards at Athens Airport , but at tourist prices, no way near €12 EUR ($13 USD).

The advantage of local prepaid sim cards is that you buy them directly from the mobile internet provider. You get the cheapest prices, (unlimited) local calls & sms included, the biggest data packages and the fastest data speed.

Be aware that the local prepaid sim cards for tourists you buy in Greece are also NOT 5G ready. None of the mobile internet operators in Greece (Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova) allow prepaid users to use the 5G network, 4G/LTE is the max data speed on prepaid sim cards.

international prepaid sim card for greece

If your smartphone is not e-sim compatible you can order an international prepaid sim card for traveling to Greece. Some of them are great for using in Greece as well as in all other countries in Europe and you can easily order them online.

Traveltomtom also put together a list of the best sim cards for traveling in Europe in 2024 .

A pre-activated physical sim card will be delivered to your home address before your trip. You put this physical sim card in your phone and as soon as the plane touches the ground and the sim card connects to a supported network you are online. Plug and play!

Click here to order an international prepaid sim card for Greece directly online .

The advantage of an international prepaid sim card is they all included calling and texting. Most e-sim cards are data-only sim cards.

There are two different e-sim cards:

  • E-sim cards that you buy on the internet through a third party
  • E-sim cards that you buy in Greece in a mobile internet provider store

The big difference is that e-sim cards provided by the local internet operators in Greece: Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova can only be purchased at one of their phone stores around Greece.

However, as of April 2024 e-sim cards are NOT available for prepaid tourist sim cards. Traveltomtom personally shopped around to find out if e-sim cards were available for tourists. Every phone store I called in Athens, Crete and Thessaloniki, I got a NO!

This also counts for Athens Airport. Read all about it in my detailed guide about buying a sim card at Athens Airport .

E-sim cards vs. local prepaid sim cards

Getting an e-sim card is the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Greece, no doubt! You arrange everything online within just a couple click. Right here, right now and you are all set for your trip to Greece. You arrive prepared and there is no need to visit a sim card shop. As soon as the plane lands, you are online.

But what is cheaper? An e-sim card or a local prepaid sim card for tourists? When we compare Greece e-sim card prices with local prepaid sim cards for Greece Traveltomtom comes to the conclusion that in fact e-sim cards for Greece are the cheapest as they already start from just $4.5 USD.

However, if you are a heavy data user local prepaid sim cards are much better value for money as for €12 EUR ($13 USD) you already get a physical Greece prepaid sim card with unlimited data, including calls.

However, after a long flight you just want to go to your hotel and it is often a big task to go to a sim card store and get connected.

Therefore a lot of travelers simply get an e-sim card for Greece. Faster, easier and less stress and depending on your needs sometimes even cheaper.

Another difference between a local prepaid sim card and an e-sim card is that e-sim cards are often through a third party, a so called MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator). These MVNO’s operate on the network of one of the main mobile internet operators and basically buy bandwidth.

This may sound a little bit too technical, but what it means is that e-sim cards through an MVNO are the last ones in line when the line is busy. Especially during peak times, the performance of an e-sim cards is less compared to a local prepaid sim card from a mobile internet operator.

Bottomline: the data speed of e-sim cards can be less compared to a local prepaid sim card.

I am sure some of the above tips for finding the best e-sim card for your trip to Greece were helpful. I hope that after reading through my comparison, tips and tricks it was easier to make a decision and order your e-sim card for Greece right away.

If you still have any questions about e-sim cards then please leave me a comment below or reach out to me on social media and I am more than happy to help you out.

Enjoy your trip to Greece!

Guide to the best prepaid esim data plans for greece.

A guide to finding the best prepaid eSIM data plans for visiting Greece.

phones and technology

greece travel sim

The best way for travelers to get fast and affordable mobile data in Greece is with a prepaid eSIM data plan. But there are multiple different prepaid eSIM data plans available so I’ve written this guide to help you find the best eSIM for Greece so you can find the perfect option for your travels.

In A Hurry?  I recommend checking out both  SimOptions  and  Holafly  for the best deals on eSIM data plans for Greece. Continue reading this article for more in-depth, specific recommendations.

Reasons To Avoid Using Your Current Provider’s “International Plan”

Your current mobile phone provider likely offers an expensive international data plan option but the service is often slow, inconsistent, and has limited data allowances.

For example, the AT&T International Day Pass costs $10/day, Verizon TravelPass is also $10/day and many T-Mobile plans offer free international roaming but you’re only guaranteed 2g data speeds… which will struggle to load Google Maps or even email.

These “international data plans” are 5X as expensive as buying a prepaid Greece eSIM data plan from a European mobile company—for example, eSIM data plans from  Orange  or  Holafly  will cost you around $2-$3/day.

For more in-depth information, check out my guide on  How To Use Smartphones and Data Plans In Europe  and my  Guide To Using eSIM data plans in Europe .

Comparing The Best eSIM Data Plans For Greece

greece travel sim

Unlike traditional physical SIM cards, there are only a few different mobile providers that offer eSIM data plans for Greece.

You essentially have two routes when it comes to eSIMs in Greece—buying an eSIM from a local mobile company or buying an eSIM designed for short-term visitors.

Local Mobile Providers in Greece

The first (and most complicated) option is to buy an eSIM data plan directly from one of the main local Greek mobile carriers ( Wind ,  Cosmote , and  Vodafone .). The problem for visitors is that many of these Greek plans are intended for people who live in Greece so you’re typically required to sign up for a long-term contract. Their websites and mobile interface aren’t always translated into English so that’s another hurdle you’ll need to deal with.

Additionally, the activation process can take a few hours so you’ll be wasting a lot of your precious vacation time stuck inside a mobile phone shop.

I only recommend this route if you’re visiting for multiple months as the cost savings aren’t practical for most short-term visitors. If you’re looking for a physical SIM card, check out my guide to the best prepaid SIM Cards for Greece .

Traveler-Friendly eSIM Plans For Greece

The best Greece eSIM option is to buy a prepaid data plan geared toward short-term visitors. These plans are much more “tourist-friendly” so you don’t have to mess with registration, translation issues, etc. For this guide, I’ll focus on these “tourist-friendly” eSIM plans.

Each eSIM plan I’ve listed in this guide will vary slightly so spend time looking at the specific details of each plan. But here are the main things to consider:

  • Data Allowance:  Most plans give you a set amount of mobile data (i.e. 5GB, 10GB, 30GB, etc) but others give you unlimited data over a set amount of time (5 days, 15 days, 30 days, etc).
  • Plan Length:  eSIM data plans can be valid anywhere from about 5 days to 90 days. It depends on your plan so it’s something you’ll want to consider when picking a plan.
  • Mobile Hot Spot Tethering:  Most eSIM plans don’t allow you to use your phone as a mobile hot spot.
  • NOTE: You can still use iMessage to “text” between Apple iPhones but you can’t send messages between iPhones and Android phones. Or you can download WhatsApp to send messages over data (which is what most Europeans do).
  • NOTE: The eSIM plans that include voice calling will give your phone a European phone number but you’ll also keep your original phone number.

HOLAFLY GREECE ESIM [Best Unlimited Data Greece eSIM]

greece travel sim

Holafly  is a European-based eSIM provider that I’ve personally used while visiting Europe and had a great experience using (read my  Holafly eSIM Review  to get a more in-depth look). Holafly sells both Greece-specific plans and Europe-wide data plans. Holafly isn’t an actual mobile carrier but they rent bandwidth from local Greek mobile providers (Vodafone and Wind) so there’s a possibility you might get less priority on the Vodafone/Wind networks during peak usage times than actual Vodafone/Wind customers.

Unlike other mobile companies, Holafly gives you unlimited data and a local phone number with 60 minutes of credit for making/receiving calls from European numbers. I also like how Holafly’s plans come in durations from 5 to 90 days—so you don’t have to over/underbuy for your particular trip.

Holafly doesn’t allow data tethering in most cases so you won’t be able to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

Holafly Greece eSIM Specs:

  • 10 Days: $34
  • 15 Days: $47
  • 20 Days: $54
  • 30 Days: $64
  • 60 Days: $84
  • 90 Days: $99
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Texts/SMS:  None
  • Tethering:  No
  • Network: Vodafone/Wind
  • Calls coverage:  60 minutes of credit make calls from all of Europe—except Iceland, Norway, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Turkey. Comes with an Austrian phone number.
  • Data service works everywhere in the EU

Bouygues My European eSIM

greece travel sim

Bouygues is another major French telecommunications company and they’ve recently released their own prepaid eSIM data plan to compete with the popular Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. I used a prepaid Bouygues SIM card on a previous trip to Europe so I’m glad they’re finally offering an eSIM.

There’s a lot to like about the Bouygues My European eSIM plan—especially since it comes standard with 30GB of data and unlimited calls/texts within Europe. I also like how this Bouygues eSIM plan is valid for 30 days so it’s a great option for longer trips.

  • Price: $44.90 (Check SimOptions for details)
  • Data Tethering: Allowed
  • Service Speed: 4G/LTE
  • Calls: Unlimited within Europe and credit for overseas calls
  • Texts/SMS: Unlimited within Europe and credit for overseas sms
  • Credit validity: 30 day
  • Phone Number: This eSIM card comes with a French phone number
  • Coverage : Anywhere within the European Union (except Switzerland)

Orange Holiday Europe eSIM (50GB)

greece travel sim

  • Price:  $59.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  50GB
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 120 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 1000 outside of Europe.
  • Credit validity:  28 day
  • Data Tethering:  Allowed
  • Usable on any device (phones, tablets, hotspots…)
  • This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used anywhere in Europe
  • Service works everywhere in the EU

If you need a ton of mobile data, consider the newly released  Orange Holiday Europe 50GB eSIM data plan  which is a beefed-up version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM. It has 50GB of data and it’s valid for 28 days (compared to 14 days with the Orange Holiday Europe plan). This eSIM also comes with many features you don’t find with other plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual French phone number that works anywhere in Europe).

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot so you can put that extra data allowance to good use. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

ORANGE HOLIDAY EUROPE ESIM

greece travel sim

The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM data plan is the most robust eSIM plan on this list because it comes with many features you don’t find with other mobile plans—including international voice calling and texts (it gives you an actual European phone number that works anywhere in Europe). The Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan also allows you to use your phone as a mobile hotspot.

You’ll get 20GB of data with this plan but Orange sometimes runs a special where they give you an extra 10GB. But even 20GB should be plenty of data for most users. Orange is also one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so you’ll always get great coverage and high data speeds.

The potential downside to the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan is that it’s only valid for 14 days once activated so it’s not great for longer visits (but you can always top up to extend the plan for an additional 14 days).

  • Price:  $49.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  20GB (Orange often upgrades plans to 30GB of data)
  • Credit validity:  14 day
  • This eSIM plan comes with a French phone number that can still be used everywhere in Europe.

I’ve personally used the Orange Holiday Europe plan while traveling through Europe and it worked flawlessly. Read my Orange Holiday Europe review to hear more.

ORANGE HOLIDAY ZEN ESIM [Best Budget-Friendly Greece eSIM]

greece travel sim

The Orange Holiday Zen eSIM is the budget version of the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan. It comes with 8GB of data and has fewer voice minutes and texts, otherwise, it’s the same as the Orange Holiday Europe eSIM plan.

Most users will use more than 8GB of data while traveling during a typical trip to Europe—but light data users could easily use less than 8GB of data during a typical 10-14 day trip.

  • Price:  $29.90 (Check  SimOptions  for details)
  • Data:  8GB (Orange often gives you 15GB of data)
  • Service Speed:  4G/LTE
  • Calls:  Unlimited within Europe and 30 min outside of Europe.
  • Texts/SMS:  Unlimited within Europe and 200 outside of Europe.

SIM OPTIONS EUROPE 30GB ESIM

greece travel sim

The eSIM/SIM retailer SimOptions also sells their own data-only Europe 30GB eSIM that covers the EU. It doesn’t come with any bells or whistles but it does come with a generous 30GB of data and it’s valid for 30 days after activation.

  • Price: $49.99
  • Data Allowance: 30 GB
  • Calls:  None
  • Credit Validity: 30 Days

MORE TIPS ON USING YOUR PHONE IN GREECE

greece travel sim

I’ve written extensively about using  smartphones and data plans in Europe  as well as tips for  buying SIM Cards For Visiting Europe  but below are some more helpful tips about using your phone in Greece.

GET A PORTABLE BATTERY CHARGER

Traveling with your phone will quickly drain your batteries so I highly recommend a portable battery. I use  Anker PowerCore 10000  because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

TAKE STEPS TO LOWER YOUR MOBILE DATA USAGE

Data can be expensive and it’s extremely easy to unknowingly burn through a lot of data because many apps use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

USE AIRPLANE MODE AND BLOCK DATA TO SPECIFIC APPS

I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also go into the settings and disable data access to each individual app. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.

DOWNLOAD OFFLINE MAPS

Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As an added bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good  YouTube video  that explains everything.

  • 00 (Country Code) (Area Code) (Number)  or  + (Country Code) (Area Code) (Number)
  • If calling a  Greek  number, you must use their country code which is 30 for example, in front of the number.

  • For Mobiles: 00 - 30  - 10 Digit Mobile Number (for calling and sms)

If you are unsure please contact us before you depart at  [email protected]  or send us a message via the " Contact Us " page and we can let you the correct prefix.

Please Note: If someone from outside of the UK wishes to call or SMS you directly they would be charged at international rates to a UK number. Some of your family and friends may have international calling as part of their phone plans to UK numbers, but others may not be able to make direct international calls or sms.

Where to buy a SIM card for Greece?

greece travel sim

There are two main ways to buy a SIM card for Greece:

1. Buy before you travel from an online store

2. Buy once you arrive in Greece

But which is the best option for you? We recommend buying before you travel, and let’s take a look at why:

Buy before you travel

Buying before your trip is the easiest and most convenient option. And, in a pandemic, it is also the safest. Here are the main advantages of buying online:

  • You’re connected the moment you land

When you buy a SIM card, you can connect to the internet the moment you land in Greece. This will save you a lot of time, and you’ll be able to order a cab instantly. You’ll also be able to let friends and family know that you’ve arrived safely by sending a message on WhatsApp. This option gives you the peace of mind of having everything sorted before you go.

  • Cheapest option

Cell phone companies in Greece will make the most of tourists by charging high prices. The cheapest option is always to buy from an online store for travelers.

  • Free from COVID risk

In a pandemic, it’s safer to buy from online stores. Don’t put yourself at risk by waiting to buy your SIM in Greece. Avoid crowded shops by buying online.

  • Easy to use

SIM cards for Greece are easy to set up. All you have to do is purchase from an official website, receive your SIM at your door step or at work, then insert the card once you arrive in Greece. As long as you follow the simple set-up instructions, you’ll be connected in seconds.

Buy in Greece

The easiest option is to buy before you travel. But there is one key advantage of buying internet once you’re in Greece:

  • Better options

You’ll find that stores in Greece offer different options you can’t get online. So you’re more likely to find a deal which meets your need exactly. We recommend buying from Cosmote or Vodafone because these stores offer the best coverage in the country. So they’re the best option for a fast and stable connection.

Unlimited data eSIM for Greece, the future of internet connection

Now we’ve learned about data SIM cards. It’s time to get to know about the newest way to access the internet. eSIMs (short for embedded SIM) are new,  virtual SIM cards  that provide internet at a competitive price. But is an eSIM for Greece better than a traditional SIM card?

The main advantage is that  you can get an eSIM anywhere in the world  and it’s delivered to you via email immediately. Also with Holafly’s data plans you will have unlimited data and minutes to receive and make international calls at no additional cost. Let’s take a look at their advantages and disadvantages in the next section:

Advantages and disadvantages of eSIM.

Advantages :

  • Quick purchase and activation processes

Purchasing and activating an eSIM is easy. You just make your purchase from a store like Holafly and wait a few seconds for a QR code to arrive in your emails. With this, you can activate your eSIM and get connected.

  • Calls Included

As a new feature that’s been recently implemented, you’ll make and receive calls within the European Union* . You’ll get 120 minutes , 60 minutes to get calls, and 60 for outbound calls in Europe except Iceland, Norway, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Turkey. However, individual plans and packages such as the best eSIM for Turkey are offered for these destinations.

With an Austrian (+43) phone number, your contacts in the EU will be able to talk to you without any issues. For destinations outside coverage, Holafly offers some of the best eSIMs .

  • Get an eSIM anywhere in the world

Are you already in Greece and struggling to get data? No matter where you are, you can always buy an eSIM and it will come directly to your cell phone. There is no delivery cost and you don’t have to wait more than a few minutes.

  • Renovation through top-ups

We can easily purchase another package and renew your usage days or minutes automatically. You don’t need to set up a new eSIM, the plan will start working on the one you already have installed.

  • Multi-country coverage

If you’re traveling around multiple countries on your vacation, with Holafly’s multi-country virtual eSIMS you can connect to the internet in any country in the European Union. And there are no additional charges!

Disadvantages:

  • Limited compatibility with cellphones

The main disadvantage of eSIM cards is their limited compatibility. As a new form of technology, many older cell phones do not offer it, so before you buy  check your cell phone is compatible

How much does an eSIM for Greece cost?

greece travel sim

Let’s take a look at the deals offered by Holafly for an eSIM in Greece.

Frequently asked questions

You can activate data roaming and use data provided by your current provider. But be aware that this will be very expensive. If you plan on using this option, you can expect a hefty phone bill when you get back home. Alternatively, you could buy Pocket Wi-Fi (a portable device that generates a WiFi connection for your phone). This option is also expensive and you’ll have to carry the device everywhere. A SIM card for Greece is the cheapest and most convenient way of connecting to the internet.

You could expect to be charged $7-$15 per MB. So if you watched a movie on Netflix, that could mean paying hundreds. That’s why we recommend buying a SIM card instead.

You can use Holafly’s updated list of compatible devices .

The best thing is to contact the seller who provided the SIM card or the operator so they can help you sort out the issue.

The 5 Best eSIMs for Greece in 2023

Are you dreaming of visiting temples, and pantheons, and learning a little about where some sciences, such as philosophy, were founded? Then you have to visit Greece! This country is famous for being the birthplace of the Olympic Games, and for having countless islands and beautiful beaches.

Well, if this is your next destination, let us tell you a little bit about the best ways of staying connected during your trip. Continue reading to learn more:

What Are The Best eSIMs for Greece?

What is the best esim for greece, orange – simoptions.

Let’s remember that an eSIM is an embedded SIM, which means that it is built into the device. You cannot remove or insert an eSIM. One of the pros of this new technology is that you can get the plans from the comfort of your home. If you have a compatible device, all you need is to go online and find the best offers for you, make the purchase, and activate the eSIM with the QR code that they send to your email. This fact also makes it easier to get mobile services during a trip, because the eSIM can be purchased at home, and activated upon arrival.

One great option for you if you plan to travel to Greece is Orange – SimOptions. They have two types of eSIMs, one that includes only data and another one that includes all the services (data, messages, and calls). You can feel free to choose the one that better fits your needs.

If you plan to connect other devices to the same network, it is possible because Orange allows data tethering.

Let’s take a look at the offers:

Holiday Europe eSIM | $ 49.90 - 30GB

  • Calls/SMS: Yes
  • Credit Validity: 14 days

Holiday Zen eSIM | $ 29.90 - 12GB

Welcome travelers 3 gb – € 10.

  • Data : 3 GB (4G LTE)
  • Validity : 30 days
  • Coverage : 30 destinations in the European Union

Welcome Travelers 6 GB – € 15

  • Data : 6 GB (4G LTE)

Welcome Travelers 10 GB – € 20

  • Data : 10 GB (4G LTE)

Bouygues Telecom – SimOptions

The fact that the eSIM cannot be removed makes it impossible to damage or lose it. It is known that SIM cards are delicate items. They are small, so if you do not store them properly you might lose them. Besides, if you are not careful enough when manipulating a SIM card, you could damage the circuits, becoming it useless.

Getting an eSIM gives you peace of mind that there will be no way to damage the card or the slot.

Another option when is to eSIM is Bouygues Telecom. They offer you something better than having services in Europe, and it is having unlimited services! That is right. Below you will see more details, however, take into account that the eSIM has to be activated in France first.

Let’s see the details:

My European eSIM | $ 44.90 - 30GB

  • Calls/SMS: Calls only
  • Credit Validity: 30 days

O2 – SimOptions

Do you have a smartphone that only supports SIM cards? Do not worry, we also thought about you. We know that until eSIMs become standard, many people will continue using SIM cards. That is why we bring you another option. O2 offers international SIM cards, and for Europe, they have a Tourist card.

If you are planning a trip to Greece, this card is for you:

Go Card eSIM | $ 22.90 - 10GB

  • Calls/SMS: No

There is no way to be disconnected during your next trip, we are sure that some of the mentioned options will be useful for you. Choose one and start roaming like at home!

ESIM Product Comparison

Orange holiday europe esim.

Orange Holiday Europe eSim is an all-inclusive eSim plan that can fully replace a physical sim card. You get 20 GB of mobile data and a (French) phone number, so you can make calls and send/receive text messages without any roaming charges. It’s worth noting that I’ve not seen anything similar with any other eSim provider, so this is by far the best option if you need a monthly eSim plan for Greece that includes everything.

And don’t worry that it’s a French number; it’s still the European Union, so you can make calls, send texts, and use mobile data without any additional charges. The only catch is that you need to register your eSim within the first month if you don’t want it to get deactivated when the plan stops being valid.

This eSim will cost you around 39 Euros. It’s expensive, but worth it if you want an all-inclusive plan.

  • Includes a phone number
  • Generous data allowance
  • Regional coverage

Orange Holiday Zen eSim

Orange Holiday Zen eSim is an all-inclusive eSim plan, similar to the previous Orange Holiday Europe eSim plan. The Zen plan is valid for two weeks, as opposed to thirty days of the previous plan, and it includes a smaller data allowance. You get 8 GB of mobile data, and you only need to pay some 20 Euros for this plan.

You will also get a French phone number so you can make and receive calls, as well as send and receive text messages. The data plan even includes free phone minutes and 200 free texts to Europe and worldwide, and it’s genuinely one of the best two-week plans you can buy for Greece, especially if having a phone number is important to you.

  • Phone number included
  • Good value for money
  • Coverage in the entire EU

Holafly is the most popular eSim provider for travelers who need an unlimited data plan. All of their eSim options for Greece include unlimited data , and they differ in the duration of the plan. The most affordable plan is active for five days, while the most expensive plan gets you almost three months of unlimited data in Greece.

You don’t get a local phone number with the Holafly eSim, but that’s the case with most eSim providers. Also, one major downside of Holafly is that they don’t allow data sharing, meaning you’ll be able to access the Internet only on the device on which the eSim is active. This is an issue if you want to create a hotspot that your friends and family could use as well.

It’s worth noting that Holafly also offers regional eSim plans that are priced identically to individual-country plans. If you’re planning to visit more than one country in Europe, a regional Europe eSim plan is the best value for money.

  • Unlimited data
  • Easy top-ups
  • Lots of options
  • No data sharing

Nomad is another popular international eSim provider with some really good data plans for Greece . Their data plans are actually cheaper than Airalo, which doesn’t happen very often. Nomad’s eSim plans for Greece start at $4.5 for 1GB that’s valid for a week, and go up to $35 for 20 GB that you can use over a month.

The cheapest monthly data plan for Greece is $8.50 for 3 GB, which is the best deal for month-long Internet access. Also, it’s worth noting that you can always purchase additional data once you spend everything in the initial plan, so there’s no reason to overpay for data that you might not even use.

Nomad also has regional data plans that offer coverage in 25 or 35 European countries (both plans include Greece), but they’re more expensive than individual data plans for Greece. These plans are worth considering only if your travel plans include going outside of Greece.

  • Very affordable plans
  • Options for regional plans
  • Easy activation and top-ups
  • No phone number

Airalo offers eSim data plans in Greece starting from just $5. The cheapest plan from this eSim provider includes 1 GB of data that’s valid for an entire week, and it’s the perfect data plan for travelers who just want to have the safety net of internet access in case they need it.

The priciest plan from the same eSim provider is $49, and it includes 20 GB of data that is valid for an entire month. This is a pretty good deal for a longer stay in Greece, especially if you usually use a lot of data while you’re traveling. It’s important to note that Airalo has a bunch of other and cheaper plans that are valid for an entire month, so you can ensure you stay connected in Greece for 30 days for as low as $9.

Airalo also offers regional plans for Europe, but they are a bit more expensive than the individual country plans. They’re worth it, in case you are planning to visit other countries in Europe or the European Union, in addition to Greece.

  • Affordable data plans
  • Regional plans are available
  • More expensive than Nomad

Ubigi is a good option if you want a regional eSim plan that’s active in Europe or even worldwide. They don’t offer individual country plans, so their eSim packages are a little pricier compared to the likes of Airalo and Nomad.

On the other hand, Ubigi also has one of the cheapest eSim plans that’s active in Greece, and it’s perfect for travelers who are in the country for only a little while. The plan is active for just one day and it costs $2, for 500 MB of data. Most of their other data plans are valid for at least 30 days and include anywhere from 1 GB to 50 GB of mobile data.

Another thing to note about Ubigi is that they also sell monthly plans that are active for as long as you keep paying the subscription. The cheapest one is $12 per month and it includes 5 GB of data. You can use it in all 27 countries of the European Union, plus the UK and Switzerland.

  • Monthly plans
  • No Greece-only option

AIS SIM2Fly

AIS SIM2Fly is a Thailand-based company, so it’s not the best option for traveling to Europe. This is a good option for Thailand nationals, mostly because of the wide availability of these eSIMs in their region.

This provider doesn’t offer individual country plans for Europe. Instead, they have one global plan that you can buy for $33. It includes

  • 6 GB of data
  • is valid for two weeks
  • unlimited 2G Internet access
  • a Thai number for calls & SMS

You can easily top up the plan once you use up the initial data.

  • Unlimited (low-speed) data
  • Coverage in 120 countries

The O2 Go Card is intended for UK residents traveling abroad, or simply those who prefer a prepaid data plan instead of a postpaid one. The eSim grants you access to the O2 network, which includes Internet access in Greece without any data roaming charges,

You can purchase the O2 Go Card either directly from the network operator or from a different provider like SimOptions. The latter might be a better solution for international travelers, simply because it’s a little easier to pick it up and activate it.

The card includes 10 GB of data valid for 30 days, for $25. It also includes a Czech phone number, which allows you to make phone calls and send/receive texts without roaming charges in Greece.

SimOptions Smart Comfort X

The Smart Comfort X is a data plan offered by SimOptions, a popular international eSim provider. This provider offers their own eSim as well as eSims from other network providers, so you can easily compare deals on their website and find the best one for you.

Their eSim includes 5 GB of data valid for 30 days, and it costs around $18. The eSim does not include a phone number, but it’s also worth noting that it’s a regional eSim, meaning you will be able to use it in 26 other European countries, in addition to Greece. While you are in Greece, you will have access to the Nova network with the SimOptions eSim.

Benefits of Getting an eSim in Greece

The main benefit of getting an eSim for your Greece trip is that you’ll always have WiFi access. While Athens and some other bigger cities have decent free WiFi coverage, that’s not the case with the more remote areas in the country. If you’re planning on exploring outside the bigger cities (which you absolutely should because Greece has stunning nature), you’ll need to bring your own Internet.

If you get an eSim with a phone number, you can also make calls and send/receive texts without paying for roaming charges, which can be quite expensive. No data roaming charges is also an advantage of a Greece eSim.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Greece

Vodafone is the largest local mobile operator in Greece and they have the best network coverage in the country. If you plan on traveling to multiple cities and exploring remote areas in Greece, your best bet is an eSim that can connect to the Vodafone network.

They have several data plan packages for tourists, and you will get the option of choosing between physical sim cards and eSims. It’s worth noting that you must pay an additional fee of 9.9 Euros for a prepaid eSim, on top of whatever you’re paying for the data plan you choose.

There’s no extra fee for a physical sim card, so purchasing an eSim data plan from a local provider isn’t really the best option, at least in terms of value for money.

Cosmote is also a big network operator in Greece, and they offer internet-only sim cards for tourists. Their mobile data sim cards include 4G LTE access only, and they cost 20 Euros for 12 GB of data. When you use up all the original data, you can easily top up the sim card with more data for a discounted fee. It’s worth noting that this provider does not currently offer eSim data plans for tourists.

Nova (former WIND) also offers physical data-only sim cards for tourists, and they’re more affordable than Cosmote’s packages. But you can only purchase a physical sim card for a prepaid plan and not an eSim.

Devices Compatible with eSim in Greece

All devices that support embedded sim technology will be compatible with eSims in Greece. This includes all iOS and some Android devices that were released from 2018 onwards. All iPhones released since the iPhone XR are compatible with eSims and you should have no issues trying to activate an eSim in Greece.

It’s not quite as simple with Android phones, simply because there are a lot more of them. The eSim technology is still being reserved for the best and most expensive Android phones, and many budget and mid-range phones do not support this technology yet.

If you’re using a flagship phone that was released in the past 4-5 years, or a Google Pixel phone, you can most likely add an eSim data plan.

In any case, it’s super easy to check whether your phone supports an eSim, so be sure to do that before you purchase any Greece eSim plans. Just call *#06# and if you see an EID number, that means that your smartphone supports an eSim. If there is no such number, your phone most likely doesn’t support an eSim and you’ll need to purchase a physical sim card.

If your phone is compatible with an eSim but you’re still having issues setting it up, it’s best to contact the support team of the eSim provider for a quick resolution of the problem.

Data Needed When Traveling to Greece

The amount of data you need when traveling to Greece depends on how you’re used to using your phone, and what you plan to use the Internet for. If you need an Internet connection just to access maps for directions, use social media, and check your email, you will be fine with 3-5 GB for up to two weeks.

On the other hand, if you need to stay connected because you need to work while you’re in Greece, or you want the option of streaming movies and Youtube videos, your best bet is an unlimited data plan.

Just make sure that whatever data plan allows you to share the connection (create a hotspot) so you can connect other devices to the WiFi. Since most eSim providers who offer unlimited data plans don’t allow data sharing, a physical sim card will be your best bet in this case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is esim available in greece.

Yes, eSim is available in Greece and you can use an eSim with a data plan that you purchased from any international provider. However, tourists will have a harder time purchasing prepaid eSims in Greece, because they’re usually tied to postpaid packages.

How can I buy an eSim in Greece?

The best way to buy an eSim in Greece is to purchase one online, from one of the many international providers. Vodafone is the only local provider that offers eSim data plans for tourists, and those come with an additional fee of 10 Euros, on top of the existing cost of the data plan.

How do I activate my eSim in Greece?

To activate your eSim in Greece, just follow the instructions you received with it. Either scan the QR code, or open the settings on your smartphone, find the SIM manager, select add eSim/add a data plan, and input the necessary information to add the sim card.

The eSim card is normally activated as soon as you turn on mobile data, so if you add it before your trip, don’t use 4G before you arrive in Greece.

  1. The Best SIM Card For Greece 2024

Cosmote Frog. In my opinion, Cosmote Frog is the best SIM card in Greece for tourists and expats. It uses the Cosmote network, offers slightly better value than Cosmote WhatsUp, and the app is also in English. Unlike Cosmote WhatsUp, with Frog you only pay per second when making a call - which does make a difference.
