You go down a spiral stairwell and into a cool, dark and silent world. The skulls and bones of 6+ million people are neatly stored, man-high, against the walls. You run into occasional artefacts, and into the lone remains of visitors who got lost there.

Airports & Entry

When headed to France, you won’t need to apply for a visa so long as your expected stay is less than 90 days. You also need to have at least three months before your passport expires past the date you expect to leave the country.

An emergency passport will not be accepted unless you also have an approved visa, no matter the length of your stay. There should be at least one page available for a stamp when you arrive.

There are three major airports in the area of Paris, France. The one you fly into will most likely be determined by the airline you are using. That airline will fly into the airport it is contracted with. With that in mind, when flying to France you will most likely land at one of the following airports:

Paris is unlike most other vacation destinations. The French, especially Parisians, live life a little differently. This means that while you’re there, you may have to get used to eating at different times and you may need to plan your attire.

Tip #1: Wear Comfortable Shoes

You will be going down many stairs to get into the catacombs, and the catacombs extend for miles. Even though you won’t be seeing all 200+ miles of them, it is still a pretty long walk. You will also have to ascend stairs to get out.

Most guided tours take 2 hours or so. This means you will be walking for a while. Be sure to pack some comfortable walking shoes for your visit to the Paris catacombs.

Tip #2: Bring a Jacket, and Maybe Gloves Too

It is usually very damp inside the catacomb tunnels. On top of that, the temperature is 15 degrees Celsius year-round. This equates to less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit. For most, this is a bit chilly at the very least. Most visitors are comfortable with a light jacket. However, having a thin pair of gloves won’t hurt either.

Tip #3: Invest in a Guided Tour

Because the number of guests in the tunnels at any one time is just 200, the lines to obtain a general admission ticket are usually very long. By purchasing a priority ticket through a guided tour, you can skip the lines at the entrance and go right in.

Another added bonus is that you will have a tour guide that can tell you much more about the Paris catacombs. Some tours even allow you to see areas of the tunnels that most don’t.

Tip #4: If Not, Arrive Early

If you haven’t planned ahead and purchased a tour with priority access to the catacombs, you will have to wait in line. This line can get quite long so be prepared for it. However, if you arrive 30 to 60 minutes before they open, you most likely won’t have to wait quite as long. Sometimes the wait can be hours, so be sure to get there early.

Tip #5: Are you claustrophobic?

There aren’t many restrictions when it comes to visiting the catacombs, except for a few banned items. Even kids can go inside for a look at the more sinister side of Paris. However, if you are claustrophobic and already know this, the catacombs may not be the ideal attraction for you. The good part is that there are always the famous cabarets of Paris, the Seine River cruises, or even guided tours of Versailles.

Tip #6: Stay in a Central Location

Everywhere you’re going to want to go as a tourist in Paris will be centrally located or have provided travel that leaves this area. Most of the hotels, many museums, and a lot of restaurants are all centrally located.

You’ll also find that the pickup and drop-off locations for many tours are located here. It makes things much easier if you find accommodations close to central Paris.

Tip #7: Always Have Euros on Hand

There are many stores and even restaurants that don’t accept debit or credit cards. Some taxis won’t accept plastic either. If an establishment does accept a card, they often won’t allow you to leave a tip on your receipt.

This means it’s important to always have a few euros on hand. Many ATMs in the city will allow you to use a foreign card to withdrawal euros.

Restaurants & Eating Out

The Ciel de Paris is one of the most romantic restaurants in the city. It is located in the Montparnasse Tower with beautiful views of the city. You’ll also find a well-stocked champagne bar available to you. The Polidor is one of the oldest restaurants in Paris.

It dates back to 1895 and the interior decor hasn’t changed much since. This is one of those restaurants that only take cash, so have a few euros on you.

In Paris, it’s hard to find a truly casual restaurant. Because of this, you’ll want to make sure that you’re dressed for the occasion. If you’re not sure what you could or should wear to a particular establishment, some will list their dress code online or you can always give them a call.

Nightlife & Entertainment

Getting Around

There’s no shortage of ways to get around in Paris. The most popular, effective, and affordable way is the Metro. You may find it a bit intimidating at first due to the sheer number of lines and routes, but after a few trips to an attraction or restaurant, you’ll be riding the Metro like a pro.

You can purchase single ride tickets or a batch of 10. If you’re going to be in Paris longer there are also ride passes.

While traditional taxis can be quite expensive in the city, Uber offers some fairly inexpensive ways to get around town if traveling by car is best.

Walking between destinations is very doable in Paris but if you’d like to ride a bike instead, there’s plenty of kiosks that rent them. In fact, this can be a great way to tour the city and do some sightseeing on your own.

Accommodations

You’ll find everything from small and inexpensive hostels too large, luxury resorts in Paris. There are even small boutique hotels with spas and other amenities. Where you decide to stay while visiting Paris will largely depend on the type of experience you’re looking for.

January is the coldest month, on average, with temperatures in the low 40s Fahrenheit.

Attractions

Paris is full of attractions. The Louvre Museum is a popular stop for tourists. The Mona Lisa exhibit here can be quite busy, however. The inside story

The Catacombs of Paris contain the bones of more than 6 million Parisians, transferred from different cemeteries of the capital for safety issues between the late eighteenth century and the mid-nineteenth century. This underground labyrinth is housed in the old quarry galleries (whose stones were used for the construction of the city). To get into the catacombs, visitors must go down the 213 steps reaching 20 meters underground to travel the almost two kilometers of tunnels open to the public (less than 1% of all the catacombs). The temperature is constant: 14 °, all year round.

Underground Paris is open to visitors and offers a very surprising spectacle: more than 6 million human bones strewn along the length of the tunnels, profane poems and texts scattered along the way, which will make the most curious hold their breath. A unique place in the world that offers the most courageous journey beyond time.

The Catacombs of Paris are open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 8:30 pm and most holidays (except January 1st, May 1st, and Christmas).

What to expect on a Paris Catacombs private tour?

Underground Experience

On entering, you’ll go down 131 steps, about 20 meters under the streets of Paris, into a maze of narrow corridors, stone sculpture galleries, and a museum, before you reach the main area. The entrance is signified by a warning carved into the door lintel that reads ‘Arrête! C’est ici L’empire de la Mort’, meaning ‘Stop! This is the empire of the dead.'

Once inside the Catacombs, the first thing that visitors usually notice is a peculiar smell that lingers in the air. The smell has been described by some as a dusty scent that will remind you of old stone churches, but it can be attributed to the contents of the Catacombs. 

While the number of skulls and bones on display is quite striking, what mostly leaves visitors gawking are the patterns in which the skeletal remains of millions of Parisians have been arranged. Skulls and femur bones can be found piled into towers, crosses, and symmetrical patterns. These ornately designed ‘objects of curiosity’ are over 6 feet high and on all sides of the winding paths in the tunnels. 

The Catacombs’ entry and exit are carefully monitored to not allow more than 200 visitors inside the tunnels at any given time. This lets you explore the Catacombs in peace. There’ll be times when you find yourself alone, sharing space with only the dead without too many visitors around you. While the entry to the Catacombs is located on 1 Avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy, visitors climb up about 112 steps and exit around 500 meters away at Rue Rémy Dumoncel.

Port-Mahon corridor

The Port-Mahon Corridor is a replica of the Port Mahon Palace in Menorca, Spain. Francois Decure, a French quarryman who was imprisoned at this palace in Spain when he was a soldier, sculpted it on a limestone wall by memory and later died on the same spot while working on an access stairway for visitors. The corridor is one of the most beautiful and fascinating sculptures inside the Paris Catacombs.

The Ossuary

The Ossuary is one of the creepiest sections of the Catacombs because it contains the remains of over 6 million Parisians dating back to the 1700s. There are piles of skulls and bones arranged in symmetrical patterns along the entire stretch. You will also find the Barrel of Passion, where the remains of the deceased have been arranged or put on display in the shape of a barrel.

It is also spooky because of an entrance sign that bears a creepy inscription saying, “Arrête! C’est ici l’empire de la Mort”, which, in English, means, “Stop! This is the Empire of the Dead”. This inscription is the first thing you’ll notice when you enter the Catacombs Ossuary.

The Quarryman’s Footpath

The Quarryman’s Footpath is hundreds of years old. It is named after the quarrymen, who used the footpath inside the Catacombs long before the graveyard had defined pathways, stairways, and tunnels. The quarrymen used this footpath to get water for construction purposes and to clean themselves up after finishing work for the day. Get a glimpse of different kinds of altars, tombs, and plaques, as well as several skulls and bones arranged in symmetrical patterns.

Underground well

One of the most interesting points of attraction inside the Paris Catacombs is an underground well with water that is deep turquoise in color. This well served as the water source for the quarrymen who worked inside the Catacombs. Surprisingly, the well still contains enough water despite being centuries old. 

One of the first things you notice before entering the Catacombs is the entry sign. The Catacombs network is ominously marked to warn you of the macabre ambiance inside. The entrance to the ossuary bears a haunting inscription, saying, ‘Arrête! C’est ici l’empire de la Mort’ which can be translated to ‘Stop! This is the Empire of the Dead’.

Barrel of passion

Right in the (so-called) heart of the Catacombs lies the ironically-titled prime attraction, the Barrel of Passion. Located in the Crypt of Passion area, prepare to spot a symmetrical, barrel-shaped structure made entirely of skulls and bones. Its size is massive, which can be seen clearly since it holds up the roof as a support system.

Visitor tips

• Make sure you book your tickets online and early on.
• Wear comfortable shoes because you’ll have to do quite a bit of walking and climbing.
• It is advisable to carry sweaters or warm clothes since the temperature below is lower than what you generally experience or are used to outside.
• Photography is allowed but we wouldn’t recommend flash photography or using tripods.
• Visit early morning or late evening to avoid huge crowds, preferably on weekdays.
• The Paris Catacombs are not wheelchair accessible. The graveyard is narrow and dimly lit with no elevators.
• You can take a car, metro, RER, or bus to reach the location .

This VIP tour is sold by a different operator but is basically the same as #1. Choose either one and you can't go wrong.

Here, too, you'll be in a small group with an expert guide, and you'll have access to secret corners of the Catacombs not available to normal ticket-holders.

On both tours, you'll learn plenty of history, especially dating back to the French Revolution (victims of the guillotine are buried here) and World War II, when the tunnels were used both by the Resistance and the Nazis.

It has many of  the same benefits. You get an English-speaking guide who knows the Catacombs intimately, and you'll have a skip-the-line ticket and avoid the long waits at the entrance.

You'll hear all about the stories and legends of the Catacombs, and about what it took to engineer their move from city cemeteries to these underground tunnels, a move that took 12 years to complete.

This tour, on the other hand, is quite different because it is private.

You get your own guide, and no one else tags along, only your group of up to 10 people. It's up to you: do it alone, or with your family or friends.

The advantage of this more "personal" approach is that you don't feel constrained by asking too many questions, as you might in a group full of strangers. You can ask away, and no question is too silly or repetitive.

This is the simplest of my five recommendations: a skip-the-line ticket and an audioguide.

The Catacombs are incredibly popular and during the high season, it could take several hours to reach the ticket counter. Unless you want to spend your holiday standing in line, a skip-the-line ticket is the sensible way to go.

Having an audioguide (available in English) allows you stop where you want to and repeat the commentary if you feel you've missed something – perfect if you're an independent-minded traveler who prefers to do things on their own terms.

Here are a few practical considerations you should consider when visiting the Catacombs.

• Only 200 people are allowed in at a time, but it can still get a bit crowded if everyone is interested in the same "room".
• The tunnels are quite cool and humid all year, around 14°C/57°F, so please dress accordingly. Bring a sweater, and wear good shoes with a bit of tread, because it can get a bit slippery.
• The toilets are only accessible on your way out so make sure you don't need them on your way in.
• No large bags are allowed, only small purses.
• The Catacombs are not recommended for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia. The tunnels aren't particularly narrow but they are tunnels nonetheless, with no daylight.
• Nor are they suitable for people with mobility issues. The Catacombs have 130 steps, which you have to descend on arrival and go up on the way back. There is no elevator access.
• This is one of the most popular attractions in Paris and tickets will sell out quickly, especially at the height of the spring and summer seasons, so make these a priority for advance purchase when you're doing your planning.

There are 131 steps to climb down and 111 to climb up in a spiral staircase, which can be uncomfortable for claustrophobic. The ground is uneven and there are water pools sometimes. The temperature is 57F (14C) with a 98% of humidity which cause the place to be chilly after a while. A light jacket and walking shoes are advised.

The site is not suitable for wheelchairs nor strollers.It is forbidden to enter the Catacombs with a suitcase or a large bag. Only bags of 40 x 30 cm format are authorized. You can take photos but flash and tripods are not allowed.

Paris' Most Eerie Tourist Attraction Is An Unusual Destination Worth Waiting In Line For

Paris has a reputation for being an incredibly romantic city, known for cafes and cheeses — but for around 550,000 visitors per year, a trip to France's capital means entering the Empire of the Dead. In between taking the best food tours in Paris and taking romantic evening walks by the Seine, you can descend into a labyrinth of tunnels beneath the cobblestone streets of the City of Light. Here, the walls are lined with the bones of about 6 million human bodies.

Every year, people explore these cool, damp, dimly lit tunnels for a chance to look into the dark eye sockets of the skulls arranged in artful patterns, arches, and columns in the many alcoves and ossuaries in the catacombs. In fact, it's so popular, that you might find yourself waiting in line to enter, even in the chilly offseason. There are about 200 miles of tunnels under the streets of Paris, but if you decide to experience the catacombs for yourself, you'll only explore about a mile of them in your hour-long journey into the L'Empire de la Mort.

Why are there so many bones in the Paris Catacombs?

An underground maze of tunnels packed with artistically arranged human skeletons might seem like something out of a horror movie, and in 2014 the horror movie, "As Above, So Below" which was filmed in the Paris Catacombs, depicted them as the secret gateway to Hell. Like many other things that Hollywood gets wrong about Paris , that is completely fictional — but it doesn't mean there isn't a fascinating story behind why the people of 18th century France decided to fill the tunnels under their city with towers of human bones.

In the 1700s, the population of Paris had grown to such untenable numbers that the mass graves that held the city's dead were overflowing, and periodically, were opened up and cleared out to make room for fresh bodies. Simultaneously, Paris had grown so quickly that the weight of it caused enormous sinkholes to open up all over the city, the ground suddenly consuming entire buildings and pulling them into the depths of old abandoned mines below. These disturbing times called for a disturbing solution — the empty mines would become the final resting place of the people of Paris.

How to visit the Empire of the Dead

While a few tourists reportedly experience the bizarre phenomenon Paris Syndrome when confronted by the reality that the heavily romanticized city can be overwhelming and potentially isolating, others come to France craving the unexpected and macabre. If you would like to embrace French existentialism and confront your own mortality while visiting Paris, you can check out the catacombs.

While many thrill-seekers and curious explorers have ventured into the forbidden parts of the catacombs, this can be extremely dangerous. In 2017, a pair of teenagers who were exploring the tunnels got lost and had to be hospitalized for hypothermia after spending three days lost in the dark tunnels. However, if you want to safely see this fascinating piece of history for yourself, a small portion of the catacombs are open for visitors every day of the week except Mondays, New Year's Day, May Day, and Christmas. This Greek island offers all the splendor of Santorini without the crowds

Hit the catacombs, pristine beaches, cliffside towns, and fishing villages on this lesser-known Greek island.

Despite its otherworldly beauty, Milos,   Greece ––located more than 94 miles (152 kilometers) northwest of Santorini––was dismissed by travelers as an ideal island vacation destination. For a long time, Greeks avoided visiting because of the island’s reputation as “too industrial”. Since the Neolithic era, Milos’ main industry was mining.  

Santorini   and Milos share similar landscapes and geology. The islands' similarities in minerals and precious metals is due to a volcanic eruption that caused the submersion of the African continental plate beneath the Eurasian continental plate more than three million years ago.    

Today,   Santorini is expensive, overdeveloped, and crowded because of its notoriety as a port for cruise ships and attraction as a   Instagram-worthy destination . For those reasons, the lesser-known Milos should be on the radar of travelers in search of awe-inspiring rock formations, archeological sites, and beaches. An abundance of minerals on Milos is one of the reasons why visitors will notice a palette of colors splashed across the cliffs of this island––more varied than the cliffs of Santorini.

Photographer, tour guide, and web designer Andreas Belivanakis explains that Santorini is known for its burnt orange cliffs, Red Beach and black lava beaches, but Milos offers more. “In Milos, though, there’s all colors of the rainbow. All along the rocky shoreline, you’ll see all different colors. Green is bentonite, red is iron oxide,   blue is amethyst.”  

And there’s no better place to marvel at the many hues of the island than on its more than 70 beaches or from the deck of a boat, especially on the west coast where Milos is uninhabited and not accessible by road.

Archeological sites reveal the island's rich history

However,   it’s not just the landscape that attracts visitors to Milos now; it’s also the Greek island’s rich history.   “I believe that with the exception of Delos and Crete, Milos has more history per square mile than any other island in Greece,” says Andreas, a Milos native who recommends four must-see sites when visiting the island.  

Ancient Theater The relatively well-preserved Ancient Theater is a must-see sight for visitors. It overlooks the Aegean Sea and the harbor of Klima, a small fishing village. Originally built during the Hellenistic period with Roman constructed additions, the Milos theater had four to five thousand seats, but only 700 remain, according to Andreas. Locals deconstructed the marble seats to build their homes and courtyards. After a five-year restoration project that ended in 2015, the theater is now open to the public for hosted cultural events.

Catacombs of Milos History buffs visiting Milos should visit its   historic catacombs   that date back to the first century A.D. Situated west of Trypiti, these catacombs are older than Rome’s catacombs and substantially smaller at 600 feet (183 meters) in length. However, guides in Milos say that outside of Rome, these catacombs represent one of the best-preserved and extensive catacomb sites in the world. It’s also touted as the most important early Christian monument of worship and burial site in Greece.

Venus of Milos Amongst a stand of olive trees and stone ruins, a plaque   marks the area where a farmer discovered the   Venus de Milo sculpture   in 1820. Greeks refer to it as “The Aphrodite of Melos.” The original resides in   The Louvre   in Paris, but a replica was installed at the discovery site in 2022. A better quality replica can be seen at the   Archaeological Museum of Milos .

Ancient ruins of Phylakopi Although it's temporarily closed, the ruins of Phylakopi is another place Andreas recommends people see when visiting Milos. While much of the site has suffered from substantial erosion, history enthusiasts can visit one of the   most important and biggest settlements of the Cycladic culture ––remnants including a cyclopean wall, the   Mycenean sanctuary, and a megaron, an architectural form consisting of an open porch, vestibule, and a large hall with a central hearth and a throne.   The stone, clay, and bronze figurines, in addition to the ceramics excavated from the site,   are on display at the   Archaeological Museum of Milos .

From the most photographed beach to one of the most impressive spots to visit by boat, here are a few recommendations specifically for travelers in search of the best places for sun, sand, and sea in Milos.    

Sarakiniko Beach “For most of its history, [Sarakiniko] was underwater,” says Andreas. “Then there was a volcanic explosion, the last known eruption   in Milos, 90,000 to 100,000 years ago. That’s when Sarakiniko rose from the water.”

Not so much a beach as a   rare   geological   phenomenon, the moonscape of Sarakiniko was named after the Saracen pirates who used it as a hideout. Beachgoers can take in the ghostly white volcanic cliffs and sea caves, sculpted by wind and water, while catching sunrays, taking a dip, or canon balling into the water from the tops of sea caves.

Kleftiko Located on the southwest coast of Milos, the cove at Kleftiko can be reached only by boat. Luckily, several outfitters offer day tours to some of the island’s sea caves, rock formations, and hard-to-access swimming locations. With its sea caves and giant rocks rising out of the sea, Klefitko provides a postcard-perfect setting for visitors to cavort in the   lapis-lazuli   waters, explore its sea caves, and enjoy lunch on a boat.  

Andreas suggests that the south coast of Milos is home to the best beaches, such as the mile-long Paliochori Beach with its color-sprayed cliffs and the additional bonus of the   restaurant   Sirocco . “They’ll cook your food in a sandpit,” Andreas says. “Because of the volcanic heat, it’s very hot (215°F / 102°C). It’s an experience not to be missed.”

Other recommended beaches include   Gerakas,   a beach only accessible by boat;   Fy ripl aka,   an accessible beach with fairly shallow waters; and   Ammoudaraki , a small, secluded stretch of sand surrounded by greenery, and nearby cave.

Five recommended villages to explore

Of the island’s 14 towns and villages, these five places are recommended for first-time visitors along with a few restaurants to try the local culinary fare.

Adamas The port town of Adamas, also known as Adamantas, is the largest town on the island. Cretan refugees settled here, establishing it as an official town in 1835. Its charms are hidden in the narrow stone-paved alleyways behind the main strip. Visitors will enjoy its charming shops, white staircases, and pretty churches. Don’t miss   O! Hamos , the family-run taverna that serves hyper-local cuisine at Papikinou Beach.

Plaka Like Santorini’s capital Fira, Plaka, the capital of Milos, is perched atop a high cliff. It features whitewashed churches, quaint boutiques, snoozing cats, and a labyrinth of alleys lined with homes adorned with brightly painted shutters and bougainvillea-draped balconies. Visitors should head to the remains of the 13th-century   Venetian   Castle for panoramic views of the town and the Bay of Milos, especially at sunset.  

Klima   Klima is the largest of the island’s colorful boathouse (or   syrmata ) settlements. Exclusive to Milos, a   syrmata   is a small, traditional two-level boathouse home inhabited by local fishermen. Today, many of the   syrmata   have been flipped to be used as vacation homes.  

Mandrakia In Mandrakia, the fishermen’s houses are caves carved into the rock by the sea. According to Andreas, this small fishing village has some of the best seafood restaurants, such as   Medusa , which has outdoor seating for guests to dine while enjoying the view of the Aegean Sea.

Pollonia This picturesque fishing village must be   entered via an inlet. It’s also known for its cave-aged Melian wine produced by vintner   Kostas Mallis , who ferments wines in clay amphoras.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Greece and you’re looking for a less-crowded option to Santorini, you may want to consider exploring Milos and its history, quaint villages, picturesque beaches, and the local cuisine.
