Trek Gary Fisher Rig

  • Add to quote

So, after my LBS said that the specialized stumpjumper evo is back order till the end of the world I looked at other options like the jamis dragon 29 race, and the trek gary fisher rig. I used to race track bikes, and trained much of the winter in a single speed with a freewheel maximizing my cadence. Where I live its pretty flat like really flat. We here have to go out of our way to find hills. Our trails are just bumpyl so a single speed just riding the trails will be fine. But in my mind doing all this crossfit I am going to do a offroad tri where it's a bit hilly. So the trek rig is convertable to 1x9. Is this stupid of me or should I just buy a geared bike? I like the simplicity of the single gear and the geared for the race. I am mechanically and have built wheels and all. thanks for opinions

Buy a geared bike, easy and cheap to convert to 1x9 or even SS ( save the old parts and you can convert back if you want more gears or future resale). Plus lots of bikes to choose from. Demo all you can.

I'd say the Rig or similar is a good choice because all you need to do is add the hanger and the axle is adjustable for chain length

Just looked at a Rig yesterday. Trek builds the bike with all the cable stops needed to run front and rear deraileurs. (though you'll need a different rear hub) ...and they sell a deraileur hanger too.

If you're at all a heavier rider or plan on doing more than super flat trails, you may look elsewhere. The Rig's frame has a history of cracking at the TT/ST weld. My buddy is currently dealing with replacing one and its well documented here on MTBR as well. Otherwise, its a really nice, really light bike IMO.

Yeah being I was a weightlifter that rode.a.bike in a oval track my guess is im gonna kill the frame. I think that just having one mountain bike it better be geared for now. Later ill build up a steel frame.

So will you be swapping back and forth between ss and geared quite a bit?

No if I decide on the Rig vs the dragon 29 race. I will mostly ride it ss and then for a tri or if I go ride up north of where I am at I would ride it geared. I talked to a guy that did the tri I want to do single geared and he said it sucked. So having gears would be nice. However, the trails that we have locally are flat. I really am leaning towards the dragon 29 race, and building a single speed later. It just seems like with the rig i would be getting two bikes for the price of one, after I get all the things that come with the bike. I just really want to start riding offroad alot.

Trek and Gary Fisher aim to retake piece of mountain bike pie

Tech Feature: Trek & Gary Fisher 2008 mountain bike range, July 30, 2007

After (perhaps a few too many) years of basking in the 'Lance era', US bicycle monolith Trek and dedicated MTB division Gary Fisher refocuses its attention to the mountain bike world with new ideas and innovations for the 2008 model year. Cyclingnews' Sue George headed to Sun Valley, Idaho, to sample the company's newest wares for herself.

Inasmuch the Trek Madone was inspired and shaped by Lance Armstrong and his United States Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams, many of the 2008 mountain bikes from Trek and Gary Fisher are heavily influenced by their sponsored racers. No longer content to just react to the actions of its competitors, Trek now intends to portray itself as a trendsetter and is using the experience of those riders to help hone its range. The new lineups from Trek and Gary Fisher include a heavily revamped Fuel and expanded 69er offerings from Trek and a wealth of 29" bikes from early big wheel adopter Gary Fisher.

Gary Fisher continues to win over racers to the 29" cause

"Anything we do with two-niners flows through product manager [and semi-retired pro racer] Travis [Brown] on the R&D side and Nat Ross on the race side," said Aaron Mock, Brand Manager for Gary Fisher. "[Pros] Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski and Heather Irmiger are both racing two-niners."

Brown and Ross were already 29" wheel converts (with Brown being more of a 'half convert' with his preferred '69' format), but winning over Horgan-Kobelski and Irmiger required a more convincing argument, especially given Irmiger's decidedly diminutive size. Gary Fisher has demonstrated its commitment to making the alternative wheel format a viable option for the die-hard racing crowd for 2008 with an all-new carbon fiber 29er hardtail aptly named 'Superfly'.

Gary Fisher claims the Superfly is not only lightweight at just 1229g for a medium frame, but also delivers ample drivetrain and torsional rigidity to match its impressive showing at the scale. According to Gary Fisher, the Superfly derives its stiffness from key design evolutions that include a carefully engineered lay-up schedule in its new all-carbon frame, larger head tube junctions courtesy of a semi-integrated headset, asymmetric chain stays, a wider and flatter down tube underside near the bottom bracket, a beefier-looking reinforced seat cluster design, and a return to a wider 73mm bottom bracket shell.

The Superfly is also engineered with 10mm of rear tire clearance (with a 2.25" wide tire) to allow room for mud build-up. To address concerns about carbon's fragility, Gary Fisher has added stainless steel armouring at key locations on the frame, including the driveside chain stay and on the down tube just ahead of the bottom bracket shell.

The semi-integrated headset also has the added benefit of facilitating lower hand positions-a feature driven by Nat Ross-but the headsets are still fully replaceable. Unlike fully integrated designs, the bearing races rest on hidden internal cups that are pressed into the head tube, instead of directly on the frame itself.

Some of the Superfly's design features, such as the complex tube shaping and semi-integrated headset, also trickle down to other models in Gary Fisher's newly revamped 29er hardtail line, including the aluminium Paragon, X-Caliber, Cobia, and Rig, and the steel-framed Ferrous 29.

Gary Fisher had already rolled out its ultralight 26" HiFi Carbon trail bike earlier in the year at the Sea Otter Classic as the next step up from its aluminium HiFi Pro , but production versions of the recently previewed 29" version were finally available for riding for the first time in Idaho.

As mentioned earlier, Gary Fisher's updated G2 geometry will be found on all 2008 models, although 29" versions also get a uniquely offset custom fork crown (51mm instead of 46mm for 26") to improve handling for the larger 29" wheel.

Extreme Makeover: Fuel EX

Trek's recent mountain bike efforts have apparently already begun to pay off as reported sales have increased by 19% as compared to last year. Much of that improvement is likely due to the incremental improvements in its full suspension range that were introduced last year .

Cyclingnews first glimpsed and reported details on the next phase at the Trek Madone launch in June. The thoroughly redesigned Trek Fuel EX trail bike benefits from a new 120mm travel R1i suspension design that is loosely based on the existing R1 layout but adds several key features.

An innovative Active Braking Pivot (ABP) places a dropout pivot concentric with the rear axle to improve braking performance and traction, a new welded EVO rocker link both drastically reduces weight and increases stiffness, and a new 'Full Floater' dynamic shock mount helps keep the rear shock in its ideally tuned sweet spot for a greater proportion of the travel. According to recently hired Suspension Development Director Jose Gonzalez, all of these elements (especially the latter) work together to address the "'We wish it felt like it had more travel' complaint."

The premium-level Fuel EX 9.5 and 9.0 both utilize an OCLV carbon main frame and thixomolded magnesium EVO link, while aluminium main frames and aluminium EVO links grace the EX 9, 8, and 7, and Women's Specific Design (WSD) EX 8 and 5.5 models. The more moderately priced EX 5.5 and 6.6 carries on with 2007 frames, with 120mm, trickle down to entry-level bikes.

Overall, Trek claims its Fuel EX has gained 35% more stiffness (relative rear to front axle deflection) as compared to last year's version. Based on popular demand, Trek has also added an 18.5" size to complete the existing 15.5", 17.5", 19.5", and 21.5" men's sizes and 14", 15", and 18" WSD sizes.

69er options triple

The 69er is arguably Trek's most racing-influenced bike: Travis Brown himself was instrumental in pushing its development and six-time 24 Hours of Adrenaline World Solo Champion Chris Eatough used one to win the recent Lumberjack 100 and Mohican 100 National Ultra-Endurance Series (NUE). Eatough had championed Trek's 26" wheeled Top Fuel for each of his six championships but has apparently been smitten with the 69er's enhanced ability to roll over objects with its 29" front wheel while still preserving the stiff rear end, light chassis weight, familiar gear ratios, quick acceleration, and climbing prowess of the 26" rear wheel.

Trek's 2007 69er offerings were limited to a sole singlespeed hardtail, but 2008 sees two new models, both benefiting from a crossover of Fisher G2 geometry: a 3x9 geared hardtail based on the singlespeed frame, and a full suspension geared bike with 100mm and 90mm of rear and front wheel travel, respectively, and the existing R1 rear end instead of the newer R1i design.

All Trek and Gary Fisher models will come with Fox Racing Shox forks and shocks for now, and Trek said it has no plans to do its own suspension, preferring instead to continue to work with third parties on custom tuning. Final production costs had not yet been set at press time but Trek predicted prices approximately US$100 higher than 2007 for similar models. 2008 Gary Fishers go on sale this month, while Trek buyers must wait until August.

The early days of 29"ers- a gary fisher perspective.

trek gary fisher rig 29er

So, this is over a decade afterward and some gaps in the notation, which I assume I probably thought at the time would be remembered after I got home, have occurred. This following is, to the best of my ability, a reconstruction of what was told then in the Fall of '09.

There were definitely a few things which Mr. Fisher said that seem to contradict tales told elsewhere, so from that standpoint alone this is an interesting bit of information to add to the history. Who is 'right' and who is 'not so right' really doesn't matter here as much as perhaps being able to see that ' like minds were thinking similarly '. Things said and seen may have been subliminally stored in memories and thought, " not very important ', or "obvious" at the time and then brought back to mind later. Then it becomes time to 'fix' timelines and history and you know- things that weren't all that important to mark then have to be marked and well..... it can be messy.

I'd like to think that some of that happened with regard to 29"ers, because, well, who really thought in 1999 that this wheel size would supplant the mighty 26"er completely? No one did. No one figured this would become what it has, and isn't that the way great things go? With all that in mind......

1999/2000: Starting out with Gary Fisher's first 29"er, which was drawn up and made in Steve Pott's custom bicycle shop. Gary had in mind to do a direct comparison between a 26" and 29" wheeled MTB. His goal was to keep everything he could the same between the two bikes. Geometry, head angles, chain stay lengths, and head tube angles were kept as close as possible to the 26'er. This resulted in a frame with a bent seat tube to keep the chain stays short as possible. Fisher's design goal was to get to an amazingly short 16 1/2" length, which is equivalent to 419.1mm! A modified Manitou Mars fork was crafted as a front fork for the project with travel limited to 50mm. A custom modified XT front derailleur was crafted so it would not interfere with the rear wheel. Much of what was done on this 1st proto were things that would not be seen on 29"ers for a decade or longer.

Interestingly, Fisher claimed that between he, Mark Slate (head of WTB), and Steve Potts that this was always known as a "29"er" when they referred to this bike. Fisher credits a conversation between he and Mark Slate at Interbike as being when the term was first used. This probably was at the '99 Interbike as "The Tire", the 29"er Nanoraptor, was introduced right at that time. If so, it predates Wes Williams claim of the term by a month, or perhaps a few weeks even. Regardless, as I said, it very well may be that the term was in usage between all the instigators of "The Tire" and no one can really pinpoint when exactly it was first uttered in relation to the wheel size. What matters is that this was a wheel size declared as being the "29"er" out of the gates.

Update 11/29/23: It has come to light that Slate and Fisher dubbed the tire as a " twenty-nine inch " tire, this according to a Facebook post by Gary himself under his "married name" he uses there, "Gary Zaphiris". I posted the entire written comment by Gary at the bottom of THIS PAGE which is my history of the 29"er.

The second was followed quickly by a third bike, but this time the bike was made in titanium with paint designed by well known designer, Paul Smith. This had a prototype Marzocchi suspension fork on it. In 2000 another 29"er with Paul Smith designed paint was made which featured an integrated head set. Interestingly, Fisher claimed that they also were working on a "69er" design, which was a mixed 29 inch front, 26 inch rear wheeled idea.

Update 11/29/23: Recently Gary Fisher has been posting a lot of historical images and relating stories about his past that were mostly unknown to the public before now. Relating to the white hard tail above, Gary posted on 11/28/23 the following:

" This frame was built at Trek by Doug Cusack. It is a one-off. (Note: there were other similarly painted "Team Frames" but Gary's had proprietary geometry that the others did not have) The chain stays are super short and the Marziocii (sic) fork had a knob that would lower the front end by 60mm. I set up the geometry, so I still had pedal clearance when the bike was let down, and the head angle when lowered would be 69 1/2°. When you let the fork out to its 100mm travel, the head angle was closer to 68. Degrees.. this was a great bike for European marathons. "

It is interesting to note that a 68° - 69° head tube angle for 29"ers was generally thought to be unthinkable, crazy, and "would never work" on big MTB wheels like 29"ers back in those days. To see that Gary had tried this and that it worked out was a sign of things to come and introduces the notion that early 29"ers were chasing the wrong ideas. Ideas that were entrenched in the 26"er mindset and not focused on what bigger diameter wheels were actually good at, which finally came into being after about 2012-2014.

Another interesting tidbit that Gray Fisher brought back to mind was that the UCI had rules on their books making alternative wheel sizes (anything other than 559ISO/26") illegal to use in competition . This arcane rule was starting to be implemented in European races to ban 29"ers from sanctioned events. Gary Fisher went to the UCI personally to lobby against this rule and did see success when the UCI finally recinded the rule and 29"ers were then free to be used in UCI sanctioned events.

Now, on with the originally posted material.....

Fisher was working hard at trying to get Trek to buy into mass producing the 29" wheeled mountain bike. However, wheels were lacking, the Marzocchi fork was 'floppy', (Gary's term), and they were still trying to figure out the proper geometry and were trying to integrate their new Genesis Geometry into a 29" format. Fisher said that they were working with " less than the best technology " which hampered early acceptance of Fisher 29"ers by athletes and dealers.

2001: Fisher Bikes introduces the first Fisher 29"er, the Supercaliber. IRC Tires were developed for the bike. Fisher had a Marzocchi production 29"er fork made for the bikes as well.

Dealers were baffled by the wheel size and sales people basically ignored the bikes to sell 26"ers. The pressure mounted within Trek to abandon the 29"er experiment.

2003: Due to poor sales and Fisher being the only company in North America selling 29"ers on a mass scale, Trek seemed poised to cut their losses and kill the 29"er. Internally a suggestion was made to 'hybridize' the 29"er and the Dual Sport models were introduced for the 2003 season. This model, being more closely relatable to hybrid bikes from the 1990's, were a hit with dealers and consumers alike. Gary Fisher said this model line is to be credited with saving the 29"er MTB line from being cut from the Fisher range. In fact, he went as far as to say this was a 'pivotal year' in the history of 29" MTB.

2004: With the strength of Dual Sport sales, Fisher Bikes was ready to double-down on the 29"er. The company paid out of pocket for all the R&D and tooling to make the Rock Shox Reba 29"er fork, the suspension fork which helped legitimize 29"ers to the mountain biking public. Fisher also designed the new "Rig" model, a single speed MTB which was disc brake specific and came with purpose-built 29"er rims as well.

2005: The Rig with the Rock Shox Reba is released and it is a Fisher only product. This was a brilliant marketing move in retrospect as Fisher sold out of Rig hard tails and 29"er freaks were left to scramble for Reba take-off forks on the second hand market. This pushed 29"er sales to new heights at Fisher and more good news was coming in as well. Athletes were winning races on 29"ers now. Cam Chambers won on a Fisher 29"er at Single Speed World Championships in '05 as did Jesse La Londe at the Chequamegon Fat Tire 40 that fall.

2006-2009: Within this three year period 29"ers went from a niche, nearly dead category to the hottest bicycle on the planet. Sales of 29"ers doubled for Fisher in 2006. By 2007, Fisher Team rider Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski was racing 29"ers on the World Cup XC scene. By 2009 he switched to 29"ers exclusively.

Comments: The early struggles at Fisher Bikes to get 29"ers off the ground nearly sunk the category at Trek. One has to wonder if 29"ers would have remained a niche, small market thing had Trek actually cut the cord in 2004. Remember- Fisher was pretty much the only game in town for non-custom 29" MTB. The rest of the 29"er world was pretty much dominated by custom bike makers. Had Trek pulled out I envision 29"ers being much like what we see today with 36"er wheeled bikes. That being a category of bike on the fringes of the mainstream.

You also probably would never have heard about 650B anything. There would have been no reason to move beyond the entrenched 26" wheels. But then again, who knows?

One thing we need to keep reminding ourselves of though is that there are a few key folks who, without their vision, passion, and force of nature in regards to personality, we would not have the bikes we have now. In particular I would single out Gary Fisher, as he not only helped early MTB get off the ground, but it was he that helped push the 29 inch wheel into a place of prominence. Wes Williams has to be credited as the 'force of nature' that would not let big diameter MTB wheels die and no doubt it was Wes that played a pivotal role in getting "The Tire" made in the first place. Then we have to look at Mark Slate and his staff at WTB as the vehicle to get where we are with 29"ers. It was Mark who pretty much had the "kill switch" in his hand which, if pressed, would have pushed the 29 inch wheel off further into the future, or may have killed the idea altogether.

Obviously there are a host of athletes and industry people to thank here, but if I had to choose a "Mt. Rushmore" of 29"er history it would have Fisher, Slate, Williams, and "The Tire" as its faces. That's my take. You can argue who/what belongs in that pantheon, but in my opinion, those are the main players.

Thanks: I would be remiss if I did not thank Trek/Gary Fisher Bikes, and specifically Travis Ott, for the invitation all those years ago to go to that Press Camp in Deer Valley Utah. That is where most of the information and images for this post came from.

@Unknown - Thank you!

That’s some great perspective, Brother. Thanks for sharing it. I didn’t realize how close it all came to not happening, but I do remember that dual sport bike and how many of them almost instantly appeared on the trails. I think a lot of riders were introduced to gravel riding by that bike too, as an aside. The Rig was the bike that finally got me to look at 29ers… but by that point I was riding for a non-Trek shop, so I went with a really evil handling Kona Unit 29 for my first 29er (2005), then onto a succession of Salsa Dos Niners, El Mariachis and Fargos. Incidentally, it’s amazing how much that Gary Fisher frame drawing looks like what eventually became the Trek Stache… right down to the 420mm chainstays. And you know I love shredding on the Stache. Fisher for the win!!

Wonderful summary and write up! I have to respectfully disagree with you re. 650b though. Credit is due to Grant Peterson of Rivendell for resurrecting this wheel size with the Bleriot, the road bike Rive made and marketed with QBP in the early 2000s. Yes, like 29", 650b was basically a road wheel that later migrated to MTBs, but it would have stayed in the road (and possibly gravel) world thanks to Peterson and later Jan Heine's extensive wheel/tire size testing. What I think is interesting is that MTB makers in Europe more or less skipped the 29" thing and went straight to 650b. They were initially behind the curve on 29", and then for whatever reason picked up 650b. Not trying to open the can of worms on which is better or worse, but I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on this.

@Owen - Thanks for reading! Of course, 650B has been around as a wheel size for 80-ish years, and was almost exclusively a road wheel size meant for touring/camping bikes. What I was referring to was mountain biking. "Modern" 650B MTB was explored by early mountain biking pioneers like Tom Ritchey, Fisher, Kelley, and other custom builders, but when the supply of rare Finnish tires ran dry, the experiment was abandoned. Much as with 29"ers, it would take a push from a person with mega-passion and know-how to put 650B MTB on the map. That person was Kirk Pacenti. His experiments in '06/'07 led to the emergence of the 650B MTB wheel as we know it today. But.....what I am saying is that had 29"ers not taken off several years in advance of Pacenti's experiments, that Pacenti 'probably' doesn't do what he did. If Pacenti doesn't do what he did, 650B would have been the realm of Heine/cyclo-tourist classicists and never would have been anything but the very fringe element of cycling that 650B was up until Pacenti sewed two Nanoraptors together to make his first 650B tire with 2" wide tread. I probably should have specified that I was talking in terms of MTB in the post. I apologize for the confusion.

Trek rolls out new gary fisher collection 29ers.

At its huge annual European dealer show Trek World in Frankfurt, Trek Bicycles last week unveiled a whole swag of new bikes and components, including the new Stache and Superfly 29er platforms.

The Stache is a long-travel aluminium hardtail, while the new Superfly bikes are a super-light hardtail and full suspension rig in carbon fibre. Both are part of the Gary Fisher Collection, the niche of Trek’s range devoted to the big-wheelers that Fisher has been evangelising since the early 2000s.

When one of the founding fathers of mountain biking gets enthusiastic about a wheel size, the world sits up and takes notice. Fisher’s dedication to 29ers, along with the efforts of pioneers like Niner and others, has undoubtedly helped bring 29ers into the mainstream.

Our man David Jaquin was at Trek World in Frankfurt to get these snaps of the new machines.

Big-wheelers are no longer considered to have canal-barge handling only fit for bombing fire roads. With riders pushing the limits of 29ers just as they’ve pushed the limits of 26-inch hardcore hardtails in the last decade, you can expect to see a lot more bikes like the Stache in 2013 ranges.

Superfly and Superfly 100

The brace of new Superfly frames are the result of Project Apollo, an effort to pull together everything Trek knows about carbon frame building to make the lightest, highest-performance bikes possible.

Comfort was an objective too. “We knew we had some opportunities from both a weight and a seated comfort approach,” Trek’s John Riley told Bikemagic.

Initial design using finite element analysis was used to assess different lay ups and structures and then about a year ago, Trek began trail-testing prototypes. Trek race legend Travis Brown was a key tester and “provided an invaluable amount of feedback.”

According to Riley, the resulting frame “has a 30 percent reduction in surface area to reduce weight, but we maintained stiffness. We wanted stiff but also light.”

Gary Fisher HiFi Pro 29 review

Easy-rolling, mile-munching big wheeler boasting G2 geometry

trek gary fisher rig 29er

It looks as though big wheels are here to stay. Compared with the 26in standard, 29in wheels offset their greater weight with noticeably lower rolling resistance over trail obstacles.

That’s one of the reasons why Gary Fisher makes two versions of the enduro-biased HiFi Pro – one with regular wheels, and one with the bigger hoops that are gaining a strong following among riders in the know. Does the HiFi Pro 29 make a convincing case for itself, or is it a niche too far?

Ride & Handling: cruises comfortably yet is fast and responsive

Few bike designers have had more experience nudging frame components, angles and tube lengths around large diameter wheels than Gary Fisher. And it shows. Various tweaks to geometry and frame design, including that custom fork offset, transform the HiFi Pro 29 into a bike that hides its wheel size well. Climb aboard, roll down the trail and the only time most riders will be reminded of the extra rubber they’re pushing around is when they glance down at the oversized front wheel.

Fisher boast that this 29er matches its smaller-wheeled cousin for weight and stiffness, and that’s borne out by the way it rides. Reducing travel from the 5in (127mm) of the 26in wheeled HiFi to 4in (101mm) makes perfect sense, since the HiFi Pro 29’s big wheels roll noticeably more easily over small trail undulations that have a smaller-wheeled bike’s suspension working overtime.

We’re not convinced that it’s as plush feeling as a longer travel machine, but it’s as quick in almost every situation except fast, tight singletrack, where the extra mass of the front wheel caused a hint of understeer. It’s easy enough to compensate for though, and the payback is that easy-rolling feel that comes with the bigger contact patch and lower rolling resistance of large wheels.

Bikes like this are becoming popular with endurance racers in North America, and it’s easy to see why. Unless you need the subtly faster handling and bigger mud clearances of a smaller wheeled bike, the HiFi Pro 29 is one of the best mile-munching trail cruisers we’ve ridden.

Frame: unusual looks mask a great-handling design

Frames designed to accommodate 29in wheels invariably end up looking a bit squashed – and the Fisher is no exception. But look beyond the unusual aesthetics, and you’ll see a chassis design that takes the successful HiFi formula and rearranges it for the bigger hoops.

An asymmetric swingarm at the rear helps keep the rear wheel tracking straight while reducing chainslap clatter, and it's bolted to the seatstays by a pair of chunky pivots, which in turn connect directly to the shock and a small linkage plate. Generous mud clearance up top is made moot by the tight space around the bottom bracket area – like many big-wheelers, this one isn’t the best choice for slime surfing.

Overall travel is down from the 5in of the regular-wheeled HiFi Pro to 4in. The main practical difference between this and a frame designed for regular wheels is the tight main triangle clearances, which make fitting a bottle a squeeze so don’t forget your CamelBak.

Shock duties are handled by Fox air units front and back. The long stroke of the Float RP23 rear shock makes for a very supple ride that can appear susceptible to pedal-induced mush, but the three-position ProPedal compression damping counters all but the choppiest pedalling styles. Up front, Gary Fisher’s proprietary G2 geometry has been reworked for the 29in platform to reduce the heavier feel of big wheels when turning. A custom fork crown has even more offset than the already increased offset of regular G2 geometry, which reduces trail and quickens steering. Fisher says it is possible to use forks without the special offset, but it’ll affect the feel of the bike.

Equipment: High spec all round though the tyres not ideal for wet weather

A Bontrager wheelset and finishing kit combined with Avid’s excellent Elixir brakes and a full Shimano XT transmission leave little scope for upgrades, although the close-spaced shallow tread of the Bonty XDX tyres gives up grip quickly in typically slimy UK trail conditions. And, while we’re grumbling, we’ll point out that our test bike’s XT shifters had a peculiarly cheap and plasticky feel – not what we’d expect from Shimano’s best-but-one groupset.

First seen in public at Sunday’s Bump n’ Grind event in Alabama (round three of the Pro XCT Tour), Sam Schultz’s pre-production Gary Fisher full suspension bike is full of new features.

The team ventured south to participate, and tucked in the race trailer alongside the team-spec Superfly hardtails and Procaliber 26-inch-wheeled, full-suspension bikes was a completely new, full-suspension 29er that incorporates the lightweight carbon of the Superfly, big wheels from the HiFi 29er, plus flagship design elements pioneered in the Trek line.

Well known as one of the founders of the 29er movement, Gary Fisher has created a series of 29ers to suit every need, but full-suspension bikes with big wheels have rarely (if ever) been raced by team riders. Furthermore, new bikes from Niner, Specialized and Rocky Mountain have lately stolen Fisher’s thunder in the category.

Superfly 100: The new Gary Fisher incorporates Trek's ABP, a swingarm pivot concentric with the rear hub axle.

It only takes one bike to buck that trend — and from our first look, this could be the bike.

VeloNews had a chance to preview the new rig, tentatively called the “Superfly 100,” before it was trailered 1,300 miles to meet rider Sam Schultz at the race.

Design features

Most notably, the new bike is made entirely from carbon fiber, including the mainframe, seatstays and chainstays. The material permits any tube shape imaginable, and Gary Fisher designers clearly took advantage of the freedom to engineer every possible advantage into the frame.

Starting at the head tube, the Superfly 100 uses a tapered 1 1/8th to 1.5-inch internal (zero stack) headset. It’s the same E2 front end that Trek employs on the Top Fuel EX and others. But added to this oversized head tube is a massive, boxed frame junction between the top and down tubes. Front-end geometry is built for Gary Fisher’s G2 51mm fork offset.

Superfly 100: Trek Madone-style direct set bottom bracket bearings require no threads or metal in the BB shell.

The down tube has a gentle “S” curve from head tube to bottom bracket, another design feature that recently appears on many mountain bikes. It helps maintain clearance for front wheel travel at the front and bottle cage space inside the triangle.

Again taking a page from the Trek playbook, the bottom bracket is unthreaded, uses no metal and relies on bearings that fit directly into carbon fiber bearing seats in the BB shell. This bike marks the first adoption in the Gary Fisher line of the technology (BB 90) that first appeared on Trek Madone road bikes.

Also adopted from Trek, and first used by Fisher in the Roscoe, is the Active Braking Pivot (ABP). ABP places a pivot between the seatstays and chainstays, concentric with the rear axle. The feature has been adopted across the entire Trek mountain bike line, from XC bikes to downhill bikes; again, this is only Fisher’s second use of the technology.

Superfly 100: he massive head tube junction helps keep the front end stiff despite a short head tube.

Rear shock placement looks similar to extant Gary Fisher full-suspension bikes, but the linkage now swings below the top tube, rather than up from a point on the seat tube. The linkage we saw was aluminum, but team sources said the final version will have a molded carbon fiber piece.

Also notable is the front derailleur mounting point — it’s a direct-mount fitting on the seat tube and will not accept a clamp. For this pre-production frame, team mechanic Matt Opperman had to fabricate a braze-on-style front derailleur mount to accommodate his team spec’ component (in this case, a SRAM Red road front derailleur).

  • USER REVIEWS

i did some research on the best LBS for some their service and Calmar came up on top. So i made an appointment which was 3 weeks out on the calendar. my first impression was wow, this place is highly desirable. so i booked the time and waited the the 3 weeks for get my fork serviced and a tune up. When i got my bike back, i was so disappointed. the rear wheel was not mounted correctly. after pointed it out to Jerry, he said my frame was suspect and asked where i bought it. i said no, you mounted the wheel incorrectly. after redoing the qr, i showed how it aligned up correctly. seriously??? i had to report this to the manger which discounted my tune up. decent job on the fork, but didn't care to pump it back up for my weight. I'm sad to post a negative review for such a highly rated shop.

Great local bike shop. Friendly, knowledgeable and competent staff willing to help you find the right bike for you. Calmar also carries a wide variety of accessories and clothing to get you going.

Customer Service

Excellent customer service.

Great selection of Santa Cruz and Specialized bikes. The only thing lacking is maintenance items like brake cables hose, valves, etc. Everything else is good.

The best bike shop I have visited so far. 1st visit was to drop off my Blur LT to rebuild my Fox Talas. Ended up having to send back to Fox for a full rebuild but Fox took about 2 weeks to complete. The tech apologized on Fox behalves and offered to do some of the add on services for free. Where you going to find that? I went there today to get some sealant and Steve was nice enough to offer to pump up the tire. The beads didn't catch and he and another guy spent at least 30mins trying. Finally I asked them to use a tube to sit the beads first and the tire finally pumped up. All in all, it took about 30-40mins. No charge except for sealant + an apology on how long it took. After all these, they have my business for a long time for sure. I live 20+ miles away and will not hesitate to drive there for the smallest purchase. Must support the LBC with good service. Look for Donny and Steve....awesome guys.

Let me start by saying this review is way overdue. I have been a customer of Calmar Bikes for the last 8 years. This shop is the best in the area by far. Basically if you want good service, mechanics who know their stuff, and variety in products this is the place.

The guys at Calmar have always gone out of their way to make sure that my bike needs are met. Patience seems to be the motto at Calmar. I have now gone trough 2 frame warranty claims with Calmar and they got things taken care of quickly and kept me updated. The best part was that they delt with my calls instead of telling me we'll call you when we have time. In addition I don't feel like I'm getting ripped off when I go in the shop.

Bottom line if you want a shop that is dependable and will take care of business go see the crew at Calmar.

This is a great shop, I'm so glad I found it! It caters to road and mtb riders. They have excellent customer service and great mechanics, and a pretty large stock of all types of items in the store.

Customer service here is top notch! They are more than happy to help you find exactly what you're looking for, even if it means searching through their mondo-huge catalog for something different than what they keep in stock. They'll also help you with fit and picking out components, and their repair service is really great.

I highly recommend this shop, and I'm very picky about who works on my bikes and how I'm treated as a customer. Being female, some shops talk down to me, but not this one.

Good shop and great guys (and girl). They are pretty close to my office so I popped in one day with some finicky shifting problems on my Blur after a morning ride and the mechanic dropped what he was doing to have me demo the problem for him out on the back lot. Got me all dialed in and charged me a grand total of $5! I've also come in from time with a few small parts special orders, questions and other minor problems and they are always equally helpful. Thanks guys - you rock!

This shop is the best! They have everything from the low end to the high with a great selection and experienced staff. If you cant find it here you probably dont need it.

They are great. Nice guys with an easy going atmosphere, you wont be intimidated asking questions and do not feel pressured to get the expensive stuff. They actually ask you the questions and give you several answers depending on your riding style and scenarios.

I came in after looking online and going to other shops (trailhead) and was greeted with a smile and lots of attention. They helped me pick my dream bike and I seriously cant wait to go back and buy more stuff (clothing) from this shop. I am an avid and very experienced mountain biker with lots of knowledge myself (Im also a sales person) and can tell you with the upmost honestly, you will not be disappointed buying your bike or anything else from here.

I have gone in to Calmar so many times with a broken bike that I am often greeted with 'What'd you break this time?' (Hollister). I've brought in a snapped Stumpjumper frame... an on-the-trail Trek Remedy singlespeed conversion... a piece of isht Rock Shox Lyrik 2-Step... a broken this and a broken that. The boys at Calmar always get me back on the trail as soon as they are able at reasonable prices and have always done quality work on my bikes. They have worked with Specialized, Trek and SRAM/RockShox on my behalf to take care of major problems using their 'bike shop muscle' that I as the lowly consumer do not have to get things that would have otherwise come out of my pocket fixed for free. Simply put: they rock! Thanks guys!

Large shop. For Mountain bikes, they carry Trek, Santa Cruz, Gary Fisher, Pivot, and Specialized. They have demo bikes for all but SC. Good sized shop with competitive prices. Demo price is $50 bucks/day, the cheapest I found around.

Excellent customer service. All the employees are very friendly and knowledgeable. They were able to set me up quickly for the demo bikes. I never felt pressured to buy a bike during the whole experience.

I was shopping for a bike for a few months, trying to figure out what type of rider I was and then the bike to fit my riding style. A lot of shops I visited before Calmar either didn't demo bikes or only had 1 of my target brands. After figuring out riding style, I demo'd the Trek EX9, Gary Fisher Roscoe 2, Pivot Mach 5 and Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert. They asked how I liked each bike after rides and gave me their opinions/experiences on them and made suggestions what else to try next during the process. Ended up with the Roscoe2. Go check them out. Thanks James, Donny, Jacob and Matt.

Large Shop with a good selection of mtb brands...Santa Cruz, Pivot, Trek, Gary Fisher and Specialized. Demos for all except Santa Cruz. Only shop in South Bay area I found that has Fishers to demo. Very good prices.

Customer service has been fantastic. Demo'd 4 bikes from them and they spent all the necessary time to set up the bikes for me. All the employees know there stuff with a no pressure purchase environment. Also cheapest demo price of 3 shops I checked ($50 per bike).

Super impressed with the Calmar Crew. At the start I wasn't sure how to classify my riding style and bike needs because my only mtn bike has been an old GF HooKooEKoo. After many hours of shopping and talking about what bike was right for me (at other shops and this one), we determined I was most likely an all mountain rider. They recommended a few bikes to demo to see what I felt good. Demo'd Trek EX 9, Gary Fisher Roscoe 2 (3 different times), Pivot Mach 5, Specialized FSR Expert. Finally decided on the Roscoe. Shipping as I write this.

Trek Gary Fisher Rig. So, after my LBS said that the specialized stumpjumper evo is back order till the end of the world I looked at other options like the jamis dragon 29 race, and the trek gary fisher rig. 7. Gary Fisher Rig Single Speed 29er Hardtail

Weakness: bontrager components, stock EBB. The Stache is a long-travel aluminium hardtail, while the new Superfly bikes are a super-light hardtail and full suspension rig in carbon fibre. 15. Trek Rig 29er Hardtail user reviews : 3.1 out of 5

I have owned two rig frames. The first was 2009 Gary Fisher Rig frame that cracked at the usual spot. I received a 2011 Trek Rig frame (ugly green/grey color) as a warranty replacement. The Rig is a decent value for a SS 29er. The problem is that the frame has a serious design flaw.
