Hamilton

A complete guide to the Hamilton lottery

Take your shot at winning $10 tickets in the digital lottery for Hamilton on Broadway and beyond

Adam Feldman

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton is not just one of the best Broadway shows of our time, with 11 Tony Awards to its name: It's a history-making masterwork and bona fide crossover cultural phenomenon. But since everyone wants to be in the room where it happens, cheap tickets are nearly impossible to score. Here’s how you can get them with just $10 and a dream.

THE TEN-DOLLAR FOUNDING FATHER

At each performance of Hamilton on Broadway, 46 seats in the first and second rows are distributed through a digital lottery, known affectionately as #HAM4HAM. Those seats cost just $10. (Yes, that’s the bill with Hamilton’s face on it.) About 40 $10 lottery tickets are also available for the musical’s performances at Los Angeles’s Pantages Theatre—which are scheduled to resume on January 26, 2022—and for each of the musical's two current national tours.

I WAS POOR,
I KNEW IT WAS THE ONLY WAY TO RISE UP!

For many people, this digital lottery may be the only way to see Hamilton . Tickets to the show on Broadway currently cost from $149 to $399 a pop—and on the resale market the prices often go much higher.

BUT YOU DON’T GET A WIN UNLESS YOU PLAY IN THE GAME

To enter the Hamilton lottery for performances on Broadway, you must first download the Hamilton app and set up an account on it. Some national-tour lotteries also offer non-app options for entering; if you prefer that, go to the U.S. tour lottery landing page  for instructions.

WEAPON IN MY HAND, A COMMAND

Entering the lottery using the Hamilton app is a snap: You just pick the city you want, find the performance or performances you’d like to see, and hit the “Enter Now” button for them. A drawing is held every Thursday at noon for all of the following week’s performances; submissions are accepted starting a week before that, on Fridays at 10am. (There’s no advantage to entering early in the week, because all submissions go into the same virtual pile.) You are allowed to submit only one request per performance, but you can submit for as many different performances that week as you like—and if you win for more than one, you can attend more than one. (Note that these rules have changed several times since the lottery debuted in 2016 .)

GRAB A FRIEND, THAT’S YOUR SECOND

You can enter the lottery for either one or two seats. Always enter it for two. A friend you bring to Hamilton will be a friend for life.

I’M NOT THROWING AWAY MY SHOT

The lottery is held shortly after the window closes for entries on Thursdays at noon. Notifications are sent between then and 4pm, via email and push notifications. If you win, take a moment to freak out , but then act fast! You only have two hours to confirm your purchase and pay for your tickets. If you don’t do it within that two-hour window, you waste your shot.

SCHUYLER’S SEAT WAS UP FOR GRABS, SO I TOOK IT

Sorry, but no: Winning tickets are nontransferable. If you can’t use your tickets, no one else can. Make sure to bring a valid photo ID—with the name you bought the tickets under—when you pick up your winning tickets, which are available at the theater’s box office starting two hours before the performance.

JUST YOU WAIT, JUST YOU WAIT…

We’re not going to sugarcoat this: Your chances of winning the Hamilton lottery are pretty slender. At the height of Hamilton demand, there were an estimated 10,000 entries for each performance. That number has surely gone down, but entering the lottery is by no means a guarantee of winning. Get used to seeing the big red X with a “Try Again!” message on your app.

THERE’S HOPE FOR OUR ASS, AFTER ALL!

If at first you don’t succeed, do try again—and again and again and again. In the COVID era, there has been a general decline in theater attendance, which means your chances of winning the lottery are probably the best now that they’ve ever been. Take advantage of this moment.

YOU COULD NEVER BE SATISFIED.
 GOD, I HOPE YOU’RE SATISFIED

The digital lottery system offers a limited number of tickets so chicagoans can see the musical about founding father alexander hamilton without breaking the bank. here’s how to not throw away your shot at the coveted tickets..

Company__HAMILTON_National_Tour____c__Joan_Marcus_2021__1_.jpeg

The national touring production of “Hamilton” arrives Sept. 13 at the James M. Nederlander Theatre.

Joan Marcus 2021

The popular musical “Hamilton” is returning to Chicago in September for the first time since 2020 — and so is a digital lottery system that, the last time around, made getting tickets to the show something of a sport.

The system offers a limited number of tickets at $10 so Chicagoans can have a chance to see the musical about Founding Father Alexander Hamilton without breaking the bank. Here’s what you need to know.

How does the lottery work?

A limited number of tickets will be available for every performance for $10 each.

The discounted tickets will be available in batches, with the lottery opening at 10 a.m on Friday and closing at noon Thursday for tickets to the first week of shows, from Sept. 13 through Sept. 17. Broadway In Chicago said that each week after, the lottery will open at 10 a.m. on Friday and will remain open through noon the next Thursday before the following week’s performances.

Lottery prices are not valid on prior purchases. Winners can’t get refunds or exchanges on discounted tickets, so make sure to carefully select the showtime you want to see.

How much are tickets without the lottery?

Prices range from $42.50 to $232.50. A limited number of $49, day of show rush tickets are also available and can only be purchased at the James M. Nederlander box office on the day of the performance when the box office opens. Limit of two tickets per valid ID.

Can anyone participate in the lottery?

While the lottery is marketed toward local people, anyone who is at least 18 with a valid, nonexpired photo ID can purchase tickets. The ticket holder must have identification that matches the name used to enter. The reselling of discounted tickets will void them.

How exactly can I enter?

Entry into the lottery happens exclusively through the official app for Hamilton, available in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store. Winners are able to secure up to two tickets at the $10 price point. Only one entry per person; repeated entries will be discarded.

How will I know if I won the chance to buy a discounted ticket?

Both winners and nonwinners will be notified by 4 p.m. on Thursday for the upcoming week’s performances through email and an app notification (so be sure to keep your notifications on). Winners then have two hours to claim and buy their tickets.

Will I receive the tickets digitally?

No. Tickets purchased through the lottery will be available at will call two hours prior to performance start time with a valid photo ID that matches the name used to enter.

Aside from the digital lottery, tickets are on sale now for the upcoming season and are available online or via box office by calling 312- 977-1710.

What can I expect from this run of the show?

Hamilton originally premiered in 2015 in New York and starred the creator and writer Lin-Manuel Miranda. It took more than a year to premiere in Chicago. The current production will be the fifth run at the James M. Nederlander Theatre.

Producers did not make a cast announcement. Making the rounds in the North American tour recently have been New York actors Pierre Jean Gonzalez (“Gotham,” “NCIS”) cast as Hamilton and Deon’te Goodman, who has understudied several roles in the production, as Aaron Burr.

If you go: Hamilton opens Sept. 13 at the Nederlander Theatre, 24 W. Randolph St. It runs through Dec. 30.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
