Hawaii Grown Tea Seeds (Camellia sinensis)

$11.50 $14.00

Grow your own tea plants at home with our Hawai'i-grown tea seeds! Harvested directly from our tea fields, these organic-practice seeds are ready for sowing. Tea plants are hardy to USDA zones 7-9, However, in our opinion, for plants to thrive its best to grow in annual minimum temperature above 28-32 degrees Fahrenheit. If you're in a colder climate zone, be sure to keep your plants safe from cold snaps below 32 degrees Fahrenheit by bringing them inside during the winter, heavily mulching, and/or consult a growing guide before planting.

Package includes 10 seeds, and if you're lucky, you may find some extra aloha (some bonus seeds!)

Testimonials

I have been drinking ancient leaf ceremonial Matcha since 2005. My day is not complete without starting my morning off with matcha. I enjoy mine with some frothed vanilla unsweetened almond milk on top or with honey.. As a physician, I have recommended it to numerous patients over the last 15 years and have seen countless health benefits in both my patients and myself. Benefits may include increased metabolism, more energy, better mood, improved memory and concentration, and decreased risk of cancer. As with anything, each individual may have a different experience. Patients over the years have seen improvement in their blood sugar levels, cholesterol, and blood pressure. As with anything, please consult with your doctor before trying Matcha but this doc loves it!!

— Kim S

I was so excited when I heard Ancient Leaf was producing their first 100% Hawaiian grown white tea. The moment I opened the package & smelled and saw the leaves I knew I would love it. The leaves were beautiful and their aroma was fresh & light. After steeping the leaves the aroma only increased and the color was beautiful. I got several steeps from the leaves and while the color got richer looking the taste stayed fresh & light. Ki Kea Ono definitely lives up to it's name.; it is the best white tea available. Treat yourself to a great tea today.

— Cindy S

I have been using matcha daily for a couple of years now and can’t live without it! It is such a huge part of my daily routine and wellness program. Recently I ran out of matcha and once I realized, it was a mad dash to Ancient Leaf for a quick order with an extra bag for back-up! Now I subscribe to receive it on a schedule so I never have to worry again, my matcha is always covered! Love this! Thank you for a great product and amazing support!

— Kelly F

We have matcha tea every morning. Ancient Leaf makes it easy to order and is the best ceremonial matcha available. Thanks for caring about quality for your customers.

Loose Leaf Tea Ceremony

Tea is prepared and served in Japanese loose leaf style tea ceremony, Senchado . It is guided, in a casual setting. You will learn a few simple steps to appreciate tea using your senses. Tea ceremony experience is not required.

In this quiet experience we would like to emphasize the beauty of being present. You will learn to pay attention to the subtle details of aroma and flavor. Our intention is to share the experience of being on the farm, immersed in the simple beauty of nature, away from the busy-ness of life.

hawaii big island tea tour

Please note that the farm is rustic. Walking paths are gravel, uneven, and sometimes steep. There is no wifi nor cellular services. We wish for you to come away from the experience with a deeper appreciation for natural farming, green teas, and for your own senses.

We aim to share our learning and appreciation of tea. We hope you will take time to find a deeper connection with nature and an appreciation for the way of tea.

We look forward to hosting you.

If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected].

Booking & Price

You can reserve your spot with a credit card.

*  Solo traveller  – you can book for 2 people to create a new booking or join an existing group if one exists on your preferred date.

**  No show  – If you miss your visit without notice, you will be charged in full. If you are behind schedule, please let us know by calling or texting @ 808-775-1171 and leave a voice mail. Please note that cell reception is poor near the farm.

***  Cancellation fee  – We ask that you please reschedule or cancel at least 2 days before the beginning of your appointment or you may be charged a cancellation fee of $30 per person. You will be charged in full for cancellation within 24 hours of the visit.

**** Infants and Children  – We have noticed that some of our younger guests, aged 0-5, and even their parents, cannot enjoy the peaceful waiting for tea. There are exceptions, of course, and usually older children are more able. Even though it is casual, tea ceremony requires people to enjoy a calm period of time. If your child has difficulty with calm, regardless of their age, this is not a suitable activity for them.

Customizing Your Tea Experience

It helps us to know your background knowledge in tea and what tea you like to drink so we can tailor your tea experience to better suit you. Please feel free to share your understanding of tea in appointment notes. The private group booking (+$50) allows more flexibility to your group’s particular interest.  We’ve had visitors with varying degrees of experience from beginning tea drinkers who can’t yet brew their tea quite right to serious tea enthusiasts and professionals. They all seem to gain a better understanding of natural tea.

Food or other allergy?

We serve light tea snacks to go with our green tea. They may contain fruit, nuts, sugar and/or gluten. Please let us know if you are allergic to some of these ingredients or have dietary preferences. We’ll do our best to accommodate your needs.

Tea In Hawaii

Published: Sep 16, 2019 by Kathy · This post may contain affiliate links · 3 Comments

Locally grown tea is a new crop for the Hawaii agriculture industry. Most of it comes from the Big Island where the east side is populated with small tea gardens that grow and process 100% Hawaii teas. You can also visit the tea gardens!

hawaii big island tea tour

Did you know Hawaii is one of the few places in the US that can grow tea?

hawaii big island tea tour

Where Does Tea Grow In Hawaii?

Hawaii tea grows mainly on the Big Island (aka Hawaii Island). Think of the Big Island shaped like a big circle. Cut the circle in half. The left half (west side) of the island grows coffee (like the famous Kona coffee). The right half (east side) of the island grows tea. The Big Island is super cool because it has 13 of the 15 climates zones that exist in the world. The weather conditions needed for growing coffee and tea are completely different, and you can find them both on the Big Island!

Farmers are also growing tea in upcountry Maui (where you can find lavender farms, goat farms and much more) and on parts of Oahu. But so far the Big Island has proven most successful for growing tea on a commercial scale.

hawaii big island tea tour

Why Can Tea Grow In Hawaii?

The tea plant requires a specific type of climate and condition to thrive. These include:

  • Acidic soil (pH between 4.4–5.5) with good drainage
  • Climate with humidity range of 70-90%
  • Higher elevation
  • Ample sunlight and light rainfall

Hawaii (specifically the Big Island), has all of that PLUS one bonus factor that makes Hawaii special. What is this bonus factor? VOLCANIC SOIL. Young volcanic soil is the ideal, dream soil for growing tea. Lucky us.

hawaii big island tea tour

What Kind Of Tea Grows In Hawaii?

There are five main categories of tea (white, green, oolong, black, and pu'erh). You can find four of them (white, green, oolong, and black) grown and processed in Hawaii.

hawaii big island tea tour

Whereas some countries and regions are known for specific types of tea (eg. green teas in Japan, pu'erh in Yunnan, oolongs in Taiwan), Hawaii is not known for a specific type of tea. It's not good or bad, but just a fact. Hawaii's tea industry is young and farmers are still experimenting to see which does best, which they like best, etc.

hawaii big island tea tour

Hawaiian Herbals / Tisanes

We drink a lot of Hawaiian herbals (most popular is Māmaki ), but these are not classified as teas. We took a look at Māmaki in this post. I'll also do a bigger post covering other popular Hawaiian herbal tisanes.

hawaii big island tea tour

Hawaii/Hawaiian Tea versus Hawaii-Grown Tea

When you purchase tea, be aware of what you're buying. If you want tea that is grown and processed in Hawaii, look for teas that explicitly state that they're grown in Hawaii (usually labeled, Hawaii-Grown Tea or 100% Hawaii Grown ).

There are many brands that sell Hawaii Tea or Hawaiian Tea , but that does not necessarily mean they are grown in Hawaii. There's nothing wrong with that (in fact, these non-Hawaii grown tea make up the bulk of tea sold in Hawaii), but it is important to know whether you're buying tea that was grown in Hawaii or tea that was grown in another country and then shipped to Hawaii for blending/packaging.

hawaii big island tea tour

When Did Hawaii Start Growing Tea?

Tea was introduced to Hawaii in the late 1800s. It was grown commercially for less than a decade. (Some say that tea "died out" during that period because growing coffee proved much more profitable).

Lipton considered growing tea in Hawaii in the 1960s but didn't move forward with a plan. In the 1980s, sugar plantations (which were dying out), looked into starting tea plantations, but no commercial venture came from it. Why did both of these attempts not work out? Excessively high cost of production and labor.

hawaii big island tea tour

In 2000, the University of Hawaii and US Agriculture Department jointly researched the prospects of commercially growing tea in Hawaii (this was part of a larger study of alternative crops options for Hawaii). With the aid of these research departments, several hobby famers started planting and growing tea. The timing for this was good. Coffee was already thriving, sugar plantations were out...it was time for a new Hawaii crop!

hawaii big island tea tour

How Many Tea Farms Are In Hawaii?

There's an estimated 60-70 tea growers in Hawaii. Most of these are "backyard farmers" that grow tea for fun/hobby. Only a small percentage of these growers do so on a commercial scale (and even commercial scale is tiny...land is limited in Hawaii).

hawaii big island tea tour

Because the Hawaii tea industry is just about 20 years old, there's still a lot to learn. Compare with China or Japan, which have tea industries that go back for centuries.

Nearly all the farms in Hawaii grow, pick, and process the tea. They do everything from A to Z (whereas many other larger farms outside of Hawaii will have one farm grow and pluck, and another company complete the tea processing/roasting, etc).

hawaii big island tea tour

How Does Hawaii Tea Taste?

I love Hawaii tea (and have sold it to restaurants in NYC ). But you already know I love everything about my home state 🙂 . I think there's something real special about tea that grows in Hawaii...it's a combo of volcanic soil, a younger industry still open to exploration, small batches (most everything is still done by hand, no giant machines doing the leaf plucking), and the air in Hawaii. There's something about the air...

hawaii big island tea tour

Though we grow four types of tea, I gravitate towards Hawaii black teas. Those black teas taste bright and pure. The flavors are clear and uncluttered, so brisk and alive! In a way that's hard to put into words, the teas really taste like Hawaii . I want to say they capture the essence of Hawaii but I know how cheesy that sounds ^_^

hawaii big island tea tour

Tea Tourism In Hawaii

Hawaii's tea industry is new but is moving fast. Many local tea farms are trying to get in on the tea tourism business (a thriving economy in many other countries)...it makes lots of sense to do especially given the rising general interest in tea. Next time you visit the Big Island, consider stopping by a tea farm in addition to visiting a coffee farm.

Tea Farms To Visit In Hawaii

Finding Hawaii Teas

FYI, you don't need to visit the farms to get a taste of Hawaii-grown tea. You can find Hawaii teas on the menu of local restaurants (usually the fancier ones as Hawaii tea is pretty expensive compared to other teas).

Because Hawaii is small and labor costs are high, it's hard to imagine that Hawaii tea could ever be a mass commodity (like sugar). It may be wiser to focus on small production with premium prices (Hawaii tea is a luxury, but a relatively affordable one in the big picture).

Drink and enjoy ^_^

Hi, you had said earlier that parts of Oahu grow tea earlier in the article but did not cite/say where these parts are or how I may purchase from/visit the farm. Could it be that these are private growers?

Thanks, Rai

Hawaii Volcanoes FAQs

As of 2023, there are 6 Hawaii volcanoes that are considered active. And the Big Island of Hawaii is home to 4 out of those 6. The active volcanoes on the Big Island include Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea, and Hualalai. The remaining active volcano is Haleakala on Maui. There is also a volcano off of Big Island’s coast that is underwater too!

Unless the volcanoes are actively erupting, you will not be able to see lava in Hawaii. Kilauea last erupted in December 2020.

While you won’t die if you quickly touch the lava, you will definitely get a horrible burn. I definitely don’t recommend it!

It depends on traffic, but it usually takes about 2 hours if you don’t make any stops. There are a lot of cool places to see along the drive from Kona, so I suggest planning for 3-4 hours to take in some sights along the way.

Usually, the best way to see the volcano in Big Island is to go on a Hawaii volcano tour! You can also enjoy some self-guided tours if you prefer to go at your own pace to view these active volcanoes.

The best volcano tours take you to see the Kilauea volcano and help you to explore Volcanoes National Park. There are even some that take you to some black sand beaches and take you on a day trip all around the island of Hawaii.

If you want to see the red, hot lava glow, then you will want to go very early in the morning or after it gets dark under the night sky. However, there are plenty of other awesome things to explore at the Big Island volcanoes, so you can visit any time you want!

Where to Stay in Volcano Hawaii

Now that you know what to do at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, let’s talk about accommodations. There are tons of options for places to stay in Volcano Hawaii for all price points.

Unless you want to go camping, the only place to stay inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the Volcano House Hotel . It’s a historic Big Island hotel that is super convenient for exploring the park. And it’s great for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with kids !

Otherwise, your best bet is to stay at a vacation rental in Volcano Village. Some of my top picks include Hale Sweet Hale (featured on HGTV), At the Crater’s Edge , and Volcano Hideaway Hale (also seen on HGTV).

3 New Hotels To Build A Trip Around In 2024 From Hawaii To Paris

Released on 04/24/2024

[Narrator] Every year, Conde Nast Traveler

releases its annual hot list,

which celebrates the best hotel openings and more

from around the world.

Here, a chic new addition to New York's NoMad District,

a reimagined and lovingly restored Hawaiian retreat,

and Paris's most exclusive new address are just three

of the standout properties on this year's hot list.

New York's NoMad neighborhood

has been an epicenter of cool new hotels

for over a decade now.

You know, the kind of places

that actually make the hotels the destination.

But we'd say none of the others here

nails the mix of high design, phenomenal food,

and just plain fun like The Fifth Avenue Hotel.

Immediately, you'll notice the design.

It's a whimsical riot of color and curiosities

from the mind of design master Martin Brudnizki.

Here he takes his cues from the building's Gilded Age roots,

but also the travels of the hotel's owner.

All of the design layers fit together,

and honestly, staying here kind of feels like

entering the wildly designed pied-a-terre

of some wealthy distant globe-trotting relative.

Though we're happy to say,

for all the hotel's originality,

they kept the most important, most classic detail.

Bathrooms come with the deepest sinking tub

for an unmissable post shopping soak.

Oh, and two words, martini cart.

If you allow yourself just one indulgence here,

it has to be the happy hour martini cart

they wheel up to your room,

with the most perfectly poured cocktails,

with all the accoutrements.

It's bliss.

But word of advice,

that should not be in place of the downstairs Portrait Bar,

a moody sexy cocktail lounge that fills up fast

by the trendiest of New Yorkers.

For a complete change of scene,

the legacy lives on on Hawaii's big island,

where the Rosewood Group of Hotels & Resorts

has revived the beloved Kona Village with a fresh twist.

From the 150 hale or bungalows,

to the resort's own outrigger canoe,

which guests can take out for sunrise paddles,

the village pulls in its destination at every opportunity.

Though the historic grounds, black sand beaches

and acres of pools makes it easy to spend all day outdoors,

you definitely will not want to skip at least an afternoon

at the spa Asaya.

It's built right into the lava flow,

and you can actually see Hualalai Volcano

off in the distance.

That breezy indoor/outdoor design carries over

to the rooms too,

where San Francisco based Nicole Hollis

nimbly avoids the easy design tropes of Hawaiian kitsch

by going big on texture.

The bathrooms are ginormous,

with al fresco showers

and loads of stone and black to mirror the lava fields

and black sand beaches visible from the lanai

where you'll wanna park yourself

for long stints in the morning over coffee and after dusk,

staring up at the stars.

The resort has some solid restaurants,

but honestly, there may not be a more perfect vacation bar

anywhere in the world than Shipwreck,

built of an actual old boat

that was owned by the resort's original founder.

The drinks are a lot of fun and honestly fantastic.

Important to note too,

is the resort's dedication to sustainability,

working with cultural advisors on how to preserve

and protect cultural sites at the hotel,

like it's petroglyph field.

It all combines to a resort

that can feel like a perfect homage

to the land's culture and environment,

along the most memorable and tranquil black sand beaches.

And then there's the supremely elegant 1, Place Vendome,

which is hard to miss right above the Chopard Boutique

in Paris's first arrondissement.

They do things a little differently here.

There is no check-in in the lobby,

but what you will find is signature Parisian glamour,

with an exquisite stone staircase.

Staying here feels like you've foregone a standard hotel

in favor of your own private member's club,

which in a way it is.

No non guests are allowed through these hallowed doors.

There are just five rooms and 10 suites

in the entire property,

all of which have been masterfully created

by famed interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon.

Each has its own personality and aesthetic point of view.

Some are done in stark whites and cobalt blues,

others have pop art style curvaceous chairs,

mosaic showers and embroidered wallpaper.

This singular approach to design helps remind us

that this is a more personalized approach

to what a hotel can be.

And then there's the cuisine,

masterfully prepared

by luxury hospitality vet Boris Algarra.

From the high tech kitchen,

he and his team craft dishes

as beautiful as the setting itself,

including a 24/7 breakfast menu

that are plated so beautifully

you kind of don't wanna ruin it

by taking that first bite.

Also, there may be nothing more luxurious

than settling into the property's gigantic hug-like sofas

with the most perfect coffee or tea,

or upgrading that to a glass of red

from the owner's own vineyard.

A top hotel draws in the best of food, design and comfort

to become a destination all their own.

Any hotel that you choose will guarantee a great vacation.

And for more information on all these hotels,

including what to pack, head to cntraveler.com.

These hot list tours are brought to you by Capital One.
