15 Best Cities to Visit in the Netherlands

By Alex Schultz · Last updated on February 5, 2024

With canals galore, beautiful gabled houses, world-class museums and more, Dutch cities are certainly home to some fine sights. Wandering around their cobbled streets or taking a canal boat along the waterways is magical, and there is a welcoming and friendly air about the country in general.

Laidback, but with a sense of fun, exploring all that the bet cities in the Netherlands have to offer will provide you with lasting memories. Before you know it, you may find yourself returning time and time again to the Netherlands .

Breda

A laidback place with a pretty center, Breda´s main square has an impressive Gothic cathedral that towers over the cafes and shops down below. Not far from the border, there´s a lively feel to the city, with bustling bars and cheap restaurants mixed between the old buildings.

With some nice nature spots in the surrounding area and the lovely Valkenburg park to stroll around, Breda is a peaceful place to spend some time.

14. Eindhoven

Eindhoven

Until recently a tiny village, Eindhoven´s population grew drastically after the electrical firm Philips moved here; now, almost everything in the city revolves around the company – even the main train station was moved to better accommodate their needs!

Although there is not much to see, a lot of research in the technological and industrial fields goes on here and it is the capital of design for the Netherlands. If you´re not working here, there are few reasons to visit, with most people simply overnighting in Eindhoven before getting an early flight.

13. Alkmaar

Alkmaar

Although it is a pleasant place, one thing and one thing only attracts tourists to the city – its famous cheese market. Every Friday morning between April and September, an elaborate ceremony takes place whereby buyers smell, taste and feel the texture of cheese before haggling over a price.

Once the transaction has been concluded, the impressive looking cheeses are carried away by porters from the guild to be weighed. Entertaining and bizarre, get here early for a good view.

Arnhem

Formerly a wealthy resort, Arnhem´s city center is a slightly drab place despite being rebuilt after the Second World War. Due to the number of troops who died here, many British people still visit Arnhem for its battle sites.

There are lots of interesting attractions surrounding the city, such as Burger´s Zoo and the airborne museum. An important fashion city in the Netherlands, there are some top notch restaurants and bars scattered throughout the city.

11. Den Bosch

Den Bosch

The capital of North Brabant, Den Bosch´s streets and markets teem with life every Wednesday and Saturday, as traders descend upon the town to sell their wares. Its two main highlights are undoubtedly the awe-inspiring cathedral and the museum dedicated to the artist Hieronymous Bosch, who once resided here in the 15th Century. With a lovely canal system, beautiful townhouses, and cute old bridges, Den Bosch is well worth exploring.

10. Nijmegen

Nijmegen

Lying on the banks of the River Waal, Nijmegen may be one of the oldest towns in the country, although many of its old buildings were unfortunately destroyed in the Second World War. Many of them were reconstructed, however, and some nice buildings still dot the center.

With the large student population breathing life into this ancient place, one of the best things to do here is to walk along the lovely riverside promenade and watch the world go by.

Haarlem

A picturesque place that is quintessentially Dutch in appearance, Haarlem lies just fifteen minutes from Amsterdam by train and is definitely worth a visit. With its lovely old buildings, twisting canals and cobbled streets, Haarlem is certainly charming, and there are many great artworks on display in its galleries and museums. At the center of the flower-growing region, when in bloom, Haarlem is a great base from which to visit the colorful fields.

Leiden

Due to its proximity to Amsterdam, Leiden is a great day trip option , as it has a host of things to see and do. The historic center of the city is a joy to explore. Its plethora of canals, 17th Century buildings and narrow alleys give Leiden a charming feel to it, and there are lots of great museums to visit.

With the oldest university in the country and a huge student population, there is a youthful ambiance to its old streets. There are also innumerable bars and cafes worth checking out. The birthplace of the famous Rembrandt, from Leiden, you can easily visit the nearby colorful tulip fields.

7. Groningen

Groningen

Located in a rural and quiet part in the north of the country, venturing into Groningen´s city center can be quite a shock – it is a trendy, lively place brimming with energy and is completely pedestrianized.

An eclectic range of architectural styles can be found in the center, due to the rapid rebuilding of the city after it was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War. With a large student body, there is a vibrant arts and culture scene, as well as cheap restaurants and a lot of good bars to choose from.

6. Maastricht

Maastricht

Lying on the banks of the Meuse River, Maastricht´s proximity to Belgium and Germany makes it a popular destination for citizens of both nations, as well as the Dutch themselves. A vibrant place, its streets thrum with life. Maastricht is home to a multilingual and multicultural population, as exemplified by its large student body hailing from all around Europe. As such, it is a mix of cultures and very different from other Dutch cities. This is demonstrated by its diverse and excellent culinary scene.

With contemporary architecture lying next to beautiful old buildings, towering cathedrals and trendy boutiques, wandering along its bustling cobbled streets is exhilarating – the festive Carnival being the highlight of the year.

5. Rotterdam

Cityscape of Rotterdam

The second largest city in the Netherlands, Rotterdam is home to one of the biggest and busiest port on earth, with numerous waterways and canals crisscrossing the city. Having sustained considerable damage during the Second World War, the city is now characterized by futuristic and innovative architecture, although there is still an underlying grittiness to the place.

Rotterdam is a lively and diverse place, with great museums, cultural attractions, and of course, fantastic dining and drinking options befitting of such a large metropolis.

Delft

A popular day trip destination, it is easy to see what makes Delft such an attractive option. With its lovely medieval center and picturesque canals crossed by brick bridges and lined with trees, the city is quaint and peaceful.

Its most famous son, the painter Johannes Vermeer, is just one of many who has sung its praises over the ages. Famous for the distinctive blue and white tiles and ceramics that are produced here, visiting the Delftware factories is popular among tourists.

But, despite its wealth of beautiful old buildings, it is the atmosphere rather than any particular attraction that makes it worth visiting. Try and stay for the evening; once the day-trippers have left. the city´s canals shimmer delightfully in the lamp light.

Utrecht

One of the oldest cities in the country, Utrecht´s winding canals twist their way around its delightful medieval center, which has the arrestingly beautiful Domkerk cathedral towering above it. Although the sprawling suburbs do not make the best impression as you enter the city, its ugly tangled web of roads are soon forgotten once you get a feel for this lively place with its fun atmosphere.

Thanks in part to its huge student population, Utrecht has loads of cheap and cheerful bars and cafes, as well as lots of great eating options. Although there are not really many sights to visit , it is the ambiance of Utrecht that makes it a pleasure to visit.

2. The Hague

Binnenhof

With the seat of government and the royal family residing within its confines, it seems slightly strange that The Hague is not the capital of the country. More appropriately, this large city has a stately air about it.

Grand mansions and canal houses line leafy boulevards, while embassies and government buildings surround its fine parks. Due to the international bodies such as the UN and EU, the city is very multicultural. It is much more laid back than edgy Amsterdam, and has a number of fine dining options and interesting museums on offer. Lying on the North Sea, it is home to Scheveningen – a very popular seaside resort in the country.

1. Amsterdam

Amsterdam

Wandering along the cobbled streets that line the iconic canals, it is easy to see why attractive Amsterdam is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Beautiful gabled buildings and charming old bridges are everywhere you look. There are a number of world class museums on offer, such as the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House.

See also: Where to Stay in Amsterdam

Easily navigable on foot, one of the city´s main draws is simply wandering alongside its canals or taking a boat trip along their peaceful waters. With a youthful vibe and welcoming population, this liberal and cosmopolitan city has some atmospheric cafes and restaurants. It also has a lively nightlife in the form of clubs, bars and coffee shops – while the red-light district is never too far away.

A fantastic capital city with so much to see and do, just watch out for the bikes when crossing the road!

Trip to Amsterdam for Four Days Tour

Trip to Amsterdam for Four Days

• This was my first experience using travel agency for vacation and I couldn't be more satisfied. I highly recommend using Wise Yatra, they planned a wonderful trip that catered to all my personal needs. • First let's start with the location– Amsterdam is absolutely beautiful! My trip was only 4 days long but Wise Yatra made the most of it. They set up 3 tours within those days that gave the perfect opportunity to see a few of the key attractions within the Netherlands. One day was offered a walking tour through a popular local tour guide company. The guide was very knowledgeable of history and the downtown area, he was also very friendly. Another day offered the opportunity to see the Tulips, windmills and clogs through another local tour company. The company has coach bus accommodations to and from all attractions and meeting locations. The guide presented herself very professionally and also very knowledgeable of the history and attractions themselves. The last event offered through Wise Yatra was the canal cruise which offered an alternative perspective of the town via canal level. • Secondly, I could not ask for a better travel company to book through. Originally I booked this tour believing I would be joining a group. After realizing that was not the case, naturally I was apprehensive about moving forward with the trip. Associates at Wise Yatra reached out to me on a personal level to fine tune details… After expressing my concerns, the associates at Wise Yatra assured me they would be able to accommodate me as a solo traveler. My itinerary was made based on what I wanted, tours were upgraded from self guided to guided, my hotel was upgraded to a better location and I was able to stay in constant communication before, during and after my trip. They even made sure I made it home safe! Some upgrades came with a slight cost, some upgrades did not, however cost of upgrades were minimal and well worth it. The driver booked for airport transfer was local and very respectful. Also, all my questions about documents and information needed overseas were answered promptly and knowledgeable. All in all, Raj, Rachit, Nishchitha, and the rest of the team did a wonderful job. I look forward to using the Wise Yatra service again in the future.

Through authentic Holland (port-to-port cruise) Tour

Through authentic Holland (port-to-port cruise)

We loved this tour of Holland, and it was true to its name -- Authentic Holland. From the big cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, to the smaller towns of Gouda and Delft, and all the villages, canals, churches, windmills, historic buildings, and country-side sights in between, we could not have asked for a better up-close and authentic look at life in the Netherlands. The excursion to the Tulip Gardens was fantastic! The ship's crew and our tour guides were wonderful -- of the 96 passengers on board, our family of 6 and one other family of 4 were the only English-speaking guests. The crew and the guides went above and beyond to make sure that English communications were given "equal time", and it was very much appreciated. Even though we were in the definite minority (the majority being French) we never once felt uninformed or left out of the conversation or the activities. All in all, our tour experience was fantastic and immersive, and one we will never forget! We would suggest that more North Americans should discover for themselves what CroisiEurope has to offer!

Holland & Belgium Tulip River Cruise (Amsterdam - Brussels - Amsterdam)

We had a great time but it rained every day and I very much wished I had roughy my winter coat!! The food was good but the portions were small. The room was small but comfortable. Many fellow travelers including myself wished for more to do on the ship. Maybe games to play, cards, etc.

Tulip Time Cruise 2024 Tour

Tulip Time Cruise 2024

The crew, ship and meals were all very good. There was an issue with the wording of one of the tours that I paid an additional amount for and I will take it up with Avalon. Also with the room description I paid extra for the wall to wall windows. It was useless to have done that. Most of the time we were right next to another boat, or to a wall and there was no way we would even keep the curtains opened.

What people love about netherlands tours.

We enjoyed the nature and flowers and canals. The accommodation was good and the Fletcher hotels very peaceful in the country.
The tour of Holland was wonderful. Our tour director was great. Our driver was great. The weather was not so good. I think the heavy mist and rain made me ill. It was impossible to find any cold medicine in our busy schedule. Fortunately I brought some headache medicine with me just in case I needed it. I did not want to miss any of the scheduled visits but I was anxious to get home to deal with the symptoms.

Holland evokes visions of winding canals, colourful tulip fields and charming wooden clogs. Of course, no visit to Amsterdam is complete without a cycling or walking tour; but the country’s other cities are equally beautiful. The Hague offers beautiful views of the Northern Sea and some fascinating museums, while Rotterdam is known across the continent for its impressive modern architecture.

Holland - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

A tour to Holland will be an unforgettable one - the diverse culture, topography, history, cuisine, and its people has an aura that is endearing.

Holland, most call it The Netherlands, is famous for mixing the old world with the new. It is one of those few countries which seamlessly manages to mention words like old windmills and futuristic architecture in the same breath. When you are on a holiday in Holland you certainly have an exotic nightlife and inspired dishes to look forward to, but you also have candlelit dinners, historic stores and artistic masterpieces to choose from.

Tour Highlights

  • Cycle along the canals of Amsterdam
  • See the colourful windmills of Zaanse Schans
  • Visit the tulip festival at the Keukenhof flower gardens in Lisse
  • Wander the fairytale gardens of Kasteel de Haar
  • Walk through the secret annexe of the Anne Frank House
  • Wander the car-free paths and canals of Giethoorn village
  • Pour a beer at the Heineken Experience
  • Do a night canal cruise during the Amsterdam Light Festival

Travel Tips

  • If you’re looking for your morning coffee, you won’t find one in a ‘coffee shop’. Coffee shops are for cannabis, while cafes are for coffee.
  • Buy tickets in advance and arrive early for the popular tourist destinations in Amsterdam, especially the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum.
  • The Dutch have a bit of a reputation for being rude, but this is simply because they are very direct. Do not be surprised if a local offers you constructive criticism, or asks a question you might consider personal.
  • “Going Dutch” is (perhaps unsurprisingly) very popular in Holland. If going out with locals, expect to pay for your own drinks and food - they will do the same. Buying a round is not typical.
  • Prepare for a very cheesy trip. The Netherlands are known for their cheese. Be sure to visit the cities of Gouda, Edam and Alkmaar to try some of their namesake cheese.

Your Trip to the Netherlands: The Complete Guide

holland city trip

The Netherlands is a beautiful country with glorious national parks, picturesque windmills, and romantic canals all waiting to be explored. Cyclists will feel right at home in a country where there are more bikes than people while history, art, and architecture lovers will have plenty of sights to pique their interest. Plus, the cannabis is legal, and cheese and beer are celebrated; what’s not to love? This guide will help you plan your trip to the Netherlands from start to finish.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit: Being a Northern European country, the Netherlands doesn’t experience much extreme weather, however rain is common all year round. During the depths of winter, the temperature can drop down to 35 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius), whereas in July it only makes it to 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius) (66 degrees F). On any given day, the weather can quickly switch from sunny to rainy and back to sunny again and, being a flat country, the wind can feel quite strong. For more information, read our complete weather and climate guide for the Netherlands .

Language: Citizens in the Netherlands speak Dutch as their first language, but almost everyone speaks at least some English and many are fluent, making communicating in the Netherlands easy for English-speaking tourists.

Currency: Euros.

Getting Around : The NS rail system in the Netherlands is fairly clean, modern, and runs on time. If you’re traveling around the country and want to do so on your own time, it’s easy to hire a car from Schiphol (the Netherland’s largest airport) and in Rotterdam. In the country’s big cities everyone tends to travel by bicycle, which are easy and affordable to rent. Uber is available in the Randstad area (covering Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht), as well as Eindhoven, Haarlem and ‘t Gooi. You can see where in the Netherlands that Uber is available on their website .

Travel Tip: The cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam have the metro, trams, and buses, while The Hague and Utrecht offer buses and trams to get around. In each city, you can buy day tickets that allow you access to all modes of transport.

Things to Do

The Netherlands is famous for so many things, from canals and clogs to windmills and tulips, so it can be hard to decide what to do while there. A visit to the country wouldn't be complete without taking a boat tour and winding your way through Amsterdam's waterways. It's also well-worth hiring a bike like a local and heading to Zaanse Schans , a picturesque village with beautiful traditional windmills.

  • If you find yourself in the country in spring, you should take a trip to Keukenhof. The park welcomes over one million visitors each season and you'll be greeted by seven million blooms including the iconic Dutch tulips.
  • Love being by the water? In summer, be sure to check out the beach clubs at Zandvoort or Noordwijk for instant Ibiza vibes.
  • A trip to Amsterdam is all about balance. Learn about one of the most famous Dutchman at the Van Gogh Museum , then head to a coffeeshop (a cannabis cafe).

Explore what else this country has to offer with our articles on the best things to do and how to spend a week in the Netherlands .

What to Eat and Drink

Dutch cuisine is tasty and very reminiscent of home cooking. There is bitterballen , a thick stew which is breaded and fried, a perfect partner to a small beer (for which the Netherlands is also known). Stamppot is a traditional comfort food consisting of boiled, mashed potatoes mixed with vegetables and sometimes meat. Stroopwafels, a large caramel-filled wafer cookie, are plentiful and can be bought plain or dipped in melted chocolate and loaded with different toppings like marshmallows or hazelnuts.

Then there are Dutch cheeses, which are typically relatively hard and fairly mild like gouda and edam. You can visit the cheese market in the town of Gouda or head to the cheese market in Alkmaar, the oldest cheese market in the Netherlands.

As for the beers we mentioned, Jopenkerk in Haarlem is an old church that has been converted to a craft beer brewery and restaurant, where you can take a tour, taste the beers, and stop for lunch. Alternatively, head to Amsterdam and hotfoot it to the old Heineken Brewery (now a museum) if you want to see how a household name beer is brewed. More into wine? Take a tour and have a tasting at Amsterdam's own winery.

If you're more interested in gourmet fare, the Netherlands has a variety of Michelin-starred restaurants, including three-Michelin-starred De Librije in Zwolle and Inter Scaldes in Kruiningen.

Want more in-depth information on Dutch food? Check out our guides to the top foods and dishes to try in the Netherlands , plus the best places for craft beer .

Where to Stay

Most first-time visitors head straight to Amsterdam which is the country's capital and most popular city welcoming 20 million visitors in 2019 (compared to one million residents). From here you can take day trips to Utrecht, Haarlem, The Hague, and Gouda. You can also get to Rotterdam in a day, but this city, known for its contemporary art and architecture, is worth spending a few nights in. Plus, from Rotterdam you can reach Tilburg, Breda, and both the De Biesbosch and Drunen National Parks.

Interior design in the Netherlands is incredibly chic, and there are plenty of luxe hotels to stay in such as The Dylan in Amsterdam and Hotel Pincoffs in Rotterdam. Airbnb is available around the country, in fact you can even find some houseboats on the site, if you’re looking for somewhere different to stay.

Getting There

From the U.S. you can fly to Schiphol airport on various airlines including American Airlines, British Airways, and KLM. You can also fly into Rotterdam, but flights can be limited and more expensive. It could work out cheaper to fly to Amsterdam and travel by train to Rotterdam, which costs around 18 euros per person.

You can rent a car but parking in the Netherlands, especially in the bigger cities, is incredible expensive. If your hotel doesn’t have free or affordable parking, it’s best to get around on a bike, tram, bus or metro. The country isn’t huge—it’s roughly half the size of South Carolina—so it’s easy to get around on public transportation.

Culture and Customs

The Netherlands is a safe country where most people speak at least some English.

You generally only tip waiting staff if the service was good or exceptional, at which point you tip around 5 to 10 percent. Otherwise, you can round up the bill or leave the change.

Typically, Dutch people are quite formal which can come across as being a little standoffish.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Want to travel the city freely? Get a GVB (in Amsterdam) or RET (in Rotterdam) day pass, which allows you to travel on most buses, trams and the metro, from eight euros.
  • Taxis from the airports are expensive but don’t be tempted to hop in an unlicensed cab. Uber operates in the country and costs around 30 euros from Schiphol to Amsterdam. From Rotterdam airport to the city center is around 16 euros.
  • Museums are not free in the Netherlands, so if you’re heading to Amsterdam and want to head to some of the cultural sights it’s well worth buying an I amsterdam City Card (starting at 65 euros for 24 hours). It gains you free entrance to the best museums and galleries, free travel within the city limits, and discount on food and a canal cruise. With or without the card, if you want to visit the Van Gogh Museum, be sure to book your slot in advance as it sells out fast. You can only visit the Anne Frank House by booking online beforehand.
  • There are 20 National Parks dotted all over the country that are beautiful, free to explore, and rich in various fauna and wildlife. Head to one for a walk or do as the Dutch and cycle.

Holland City Guide: Rotterdam – Day Trip From Here!

holland city trip

Rotterdam, the Netherlands’ second largest city provides a unique travel experience that is quite unlike its famous Dutch neighbours to the north. This trendy, modern city offers a great deal to discover with incredible dining, fantastic places to grab a cocktail and a number of great shopping streets, museums and markets all with an incredible river-side view.

A relatively short train ride from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, Rotterdam lies within close proximity to many must-see day-trip locations like Delft , Gouda (for its amazing cheese), The Hague for its stately charm , scenery, and beaches, as well as picturesque Utrecht for its unique canal cellars and historic centre. Holland’s Largest Castle ‘Kaastel de Haar’ is also only 54 km away.

Read on for a guide to t he many things this great city has to offer and why Rotterdam is such a great place to make the most of your travels in Holland.

Rotterdam and a view of the Maas River at sunset from the Erasmus Bridge (Erasmusbrug)

Table of Contents

What makes Rotterdam great?

If you’re looking to tour South Holland, Rotterdam is the perfect place to stay when making scenic day trips to the beautiful Dutch countryside. Whether travelling solo, couple or in a group, Rotterdam’s close proximity to so many desired locations, its own many attractions, as well as plentiful bars and eateries to enjoy when you return, make it a perfect place to venture from.

Travellers to Rotterdam will find a much calmer and more laid-back experience than Amsterdam , and the city Itself has a plethora of great amenities, must-see attractions, as well as amazing eating and drinking options with lively streets like Witte de With, Meent Straat and Coolsingel that makes this a favourite go-to spot.

Proximity to many incredible tourist destinations

In addition to the many great Dutch cities close by, you will find easy access to some wonderful northern Belgian cities like Antwerp, Ghent, and Bruges well within reach for an overnight trip.

Rotterdam at night, Erasmus Bridge, Rotterdam Central Station, KPN tower

Rotterdam is decidedly less touristy with a personality all its own

You won’t find streets lined with kitschy souvenir shops or ‘coffee shops’ on every corner.  Rather, you will find plenty of vibrant developing areas offering innovative restaurant concepts, cocktail bars and modern cuisine.   Rotterdam continues to transform itself into a progressive, fashionable city in its own right with streets lined with public art installations. Look for uniquely charming antiques, specialty and record shops tucked along the hidden sidestreets.

Why Locals Call Utrecht One of the Most Beautiful Dutch Cities

Rotterdam’s Distinctly Modern Aesthetic

When you arrive at Rotterdam’s ultra-modern Central Station, you get your first sense of Rotterdam’s modern aesthetic. The beautiful, asymmetric building is lit up by a massive LED display presenting a larger-than-life maritime montage of the city. Step outside and you will see another side of The Netherlands, one vastly different from the centuries-old canal-lined cities you see elsewhere in NL.

As a result of the near-total destruction of the city’s core in World War Two, the inner city has been completely transformed.  There are, however, pockets of old buildings interspersed with the new, as well as a number of requisite canals. That is what I find ultimately most interesting and charming about the city, the completely unique juxtaposition of styles.

Rotterdam has a contemporary, spacious big-city feel

As a visitor to Rotterdam, the first thing you will notice is the ‘feel’ you get being in a spacious, contemporary city.  When you leave Central Station you feel as though you are exiting into the middle of a modern-day metropolis.  The 35-story Millennium Tower (130m) containing the Rotterdam Marriott Hotel, overshadows the station, as does the 41-story (151m) Delftse Poort towers next door.  This contrasts starkly with the distinctly old-world perception you get when you exit the historical Amsterdam Central Station.

As is similar all across the Netherlands, bicycles by the thousands sit at Rotterdam's Central Station

Rotterdam offers more value for your travel dollar

Being less touristy often makes it much more cost-effective as a home base for touring or business travel to the area .  I frequently choose to stay in Rotterdam when hotels in The Hague and Amsterdam become prohibitively expensive.

Things you must see in the Rotterdam Area

Rotterdam zoo ( diergaarde blijdorp).

One of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands – dating to 1857, the Rotterdam Zoo is an incredible day trip destination for solo travellers and families alike. Located just minutes from Rotterdam Central Station, the expansive park has a feeling of being miles from the city and makes for a lovely escape.

Arriving in Rotterdam by train I witnessed a pair of giraffes snaking their tangled necks over a high fence, curiously glancing toward me as my train slowed towards the entrance to Rotterdam’s Central Station. I questioned how could giraffes be roaming near the Central Station, and thought I needed to go investigate!

Rotterdam Zoo’s city-side entrance is located only a few blocks from the Central Station, and the amazing Giraffe enclosure sits alongside one of the major train routes into the station. The animals can be often seen when arriving from the north.

Located on approximately 26 hectares (65 acres) the zoo features over 180 animal species divided into several geographical zones.

Rotterdam zoo’s many animals, including Crocodiles, zebras, and giraffes

In addition to the animal life, the Rotterdam Blijdorp Zoo houses a Botanical Garden and Oceanarium (Aquarium) with an amazing underwater ‘shark tunnel’ where you can view feeding every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The view from under the water is truly stunning!

I found it very difficult to see everything during a single visit, and I am looking forward to returning.

Polar Bear at Rotterdam's Blijdorp Zoo.

Schiedam’s Distilleries and Giant Windmills

A few minutes away by tram or train to the west of Rotterdam you will find Schiedam, a small picturesque city founded in 1275 that is quite historically significant. The city gets its name from way back in the 13th century when a dam was built nearby on the river Schie. Similar to how Amsterdam and Rotterdam got their names from respective dams on the Rotte and Amstel Rivers.

Unlike Rotterdam, Schiedam’s historic city centre and its quant canals remained intact through the war as it was relatively untouched by the massive bombing campaigns of WW2.

One of Schiedam’s stand-out features is it features the tallest windmills in the Netherlands . The exceptionally tall windmills are quite unusual as they were built to tower over the many surrounding warehouses built during the Industrial Revolution which fueled Schiedam’s Jenever (Dutch Gin) trade.

Jenever the Dutch National Drink

Tracing its earliest roots back to the mid-13th century, Jenever , or simply Dutch Gin is the national spirit of the Netherlands. The drink was the main export of Schiedam during the 18th century.

Visit the National Jenever Museum for tastings in its in-house distillery and Roastery, and sample their ancient form of Gin distilled from malt wine. In the recently renovated museum, you can learn about how the spirit exploded in popularity, its cultural influences and its impacts on Dutch culture and economy.

Kettle One Vodka Distillery and the World’s Tallest Windmill

Family-owned since 1691, the Nolet Distillery is the home of the world-famous Kettle One Vodka . The distillery is the oldest still in existence in Schiedam, once home to over 400 in its golden age. At the distillery, you can stroll past the ‘Mollen de Nolet’ , classified as the world’s tallest windmill. Mollen de Nolet is in actuality a cleverly disguised modern 150kw wind turbine designed to look like a traditional Schiedam windmill!

Where to Eat and Drink in Rotterdam

Rotterdam is great for foodies and serves up a great selection of cuisine to choose from. With its dozen Michelin-starred restaurants, to more humble, local fast food cuisine such as Rotterdam’s very own ‘Kapsalon’, I’ve found Rotterdam a great place to eat drink and relax. The restaurants below are places I’ve personally tried and return to often.

Enjoy the Nightlife on ‘Witte de Withstraat’

When it’s time to grab a bite to eat or satisfy your thirst, seek out the lively buzz on the street ‘Witte de Withstraat’, a favourite of many locals, about six blocks south of the Central Station. The street is full of life, with a great assortment of memorable restaurants and bars with street-side terraces, interspersed with fine art and shopping. The area is also adjacent to Rotterdam’s Museum District as well.

Meent Street

A vibrant area just off of the Coolsingel, Rotterdam’s North-south artery, is Meent Straat. The area is home to many great eating, drinking, and nightlife options.

Where to Eat in Rotterdam near the Cruise Terminal (Kop Van Zuid)

The Kop Van Zuid area is a newly redeveloped area located around the Cruise Ship Terminal on the South side of the iconic Erasmus Bridge. Beautifully restored warehouses, modern residential towers and a mix of cultural features such as the Nederlands’ Fotomuseum make this a great place to visit.

Rodeo Restaurant – Argentine Steakhouse – located across the Erasmus Bridge, adjacent to the Hotel New York. Where to Stay in Rotterdam

Convenience matters when you are doing a lot of day-tripping and touring, and there is no place more convenient than staying near the Central Station. I often stay at the Rotterdam Hilton of the Rotterdam Marriot Hotel as they are within steps of the station. If you are looking for more budget-friendly accommodation there are many local options including some unique hostels in the city.

Rotterdam Marriott Hotel – Overlooking Rotterdam Central Station it is the most convenient for train travel, with Michelin star dining, an excellent Executive Lounge with gratis drinks and hors d’oeuvres, and a well-outfitted 24/7 fitness centre | $$$ | Weena 686 , Rotterdam, Netherlands | Website | +31 10 430 2000

Rotterdam Hilton – This classic hotel is only a few blocks from the station in the Theatre District, surrounded by shopping, restaurants, bars and everything else you’d need. The rooms are funky and modern, and I love the ground-floor Executive Lounge. The Hotel’s restaurant is very good, with a lively bar. | Weena 10 , Rotterdam, Netherlands | $$$ | Website | +31 10 710 8000

Holiday Inn Express Rotterdam Central Station – a somewhat more budget-oriented, well-located, fully modern hotel aimed at the business traveller. Close to the Station and all of the dining and shopping options of the Weena and Coolsingel area. No fitness centre by the location more than makes up for it. | $$ | Weena 121 , Rotterdam, Netherlands | Website | +31 20 797 9196

With all of the many wonderful amenities that Rotterdam has to offer, I find the city to be a great place to touch down, visit the local hot spots and enjoy all that South Holland has to offer. I’ve been back to this city countless times on business trips and for pleasure and I keep finding exciting things to do and see every time!

What do you think, would Rotterdam make a great European destination to visit? Or, have you visited before and have more great tips to share? Leave a comment below, we’d love to hear from you!

19 Best Cities to Visit in the Netherlands Besides Amsterdam by residents

February 13, 2020 by Karen Turner 46 Comments

As a Dutch resident, I’ve been lucky enough to see many of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands that aren’t as well known to tourists as well as the Dutch countryside.

Although you’ve probably heard why you should visit Amsterdam, the prettiest Dutch cities to visit are often peaceful, less crowded, and more memorable.  Keep reading for the 19 most atmospheric and beautiful cities/towns in the Netherlands that will help you discover more of the Netherlands.

holland city trip

I have lived in Amsterdam ( click for insider tips !) and the Hague.  One of my favorite hobbies to take a train to a new Dutch city or town or village (dorp) that I haven’t been before.

Although Amsterdam is a lovely city, its centre is full of touristy shops and if you simply take the train, you’ll discover some beautiful small Dutch towns and large cities in the Netherlands that are full of incredible architecture and history.

As much as I love Amsterdam, the Netherlands is so much bigger and people joke that Amsterdam is like Dutch Disneyworld, so if you’re wondering where to go in the Netherlands…any of these cities might be a good idea to experience the real Netherlands.  It should be noted that some of the cities are near Amsterdam while others are quite far, so depending on your time, make time to visit somewhere else.

Best Places to Visit in Noord Holland

You might be wondering: Is Holland the same as the Netherlands? Well, Holland is part of the Netherlands. It refers to one specific part of the Netherlands on the west coast (aka Noord Holland/South Holland).

Noord Holland is where most of the population lives, so people generally tend to call the Netherlands Holland as a result…however, you’re better off not describing the whole of the Netherlands as Holland since there are LOTS of other regions in the Netherlands worth visiting.

Noord Holland is where Amsterdam is located, so you’ll find many cities close to Amsterdam to visit.  The fantastic train system in the Netherlands means that the towns near Amsterdam (in Holland) are at most about one hour from Amsterdam, which makes these cities the perfect one day trip from Amsterdam (or longer!) . Click for a complete list of the 20 best day trips from Amsterdam

Haarlem: An easy day trip from Amsterdam

Picture

Haarlem is often overlooked due to its close proximity to Amsterdam. People assume because they’ve visited Amsterdam that there’s nothing of worth in Haarlem, however, Haarlem is older than Amsterdam. (Similarly, you can easily find cheap accommodations in Haarlem and take the train to Amsterdam.)

Haarlem’s town center is dominated by the imposing St. Bavokerk (also known as Grote Kerk, Big Church). Built on the spot of a burned down 12th-century church, it became an official cathedral in 1557. It’s beautiful inside and out, with stunning stained glass windows and an organ on which a young Mozart—among other musicians of yore—played many a tune.

Beyond the cathedral, Haarlem has some great museums such as the eccentric Teyler’s Museum and De Hallen, a tiny contemporary art museum. If relaxation is in order, check out the Jopenkerk, a hip craft beer bar and restaurant in a converted church, and be sure to follow up with the city’s best fries (and mayonnaise) at De Friethoes.

In short, Haarlem is a great day trip from Amsterdam for people who want to escape the hustle and bustle (and the tourist traps!) for a day. (Thanks to Alex .)

Muiden: the perfect day trip from amsterdam.

Photo of Muiderslot castle, a castle near Amsterdam. One of the top places to visit in the Netherlands

This beautiful and historic Dutch town close to Amsterdam (only 40 minutes by bus) is the home of one of my favorite Dutch castles (Muiderslot) .   Muiden minimizes cars and you’ll often see large ships passing through the town.  Be sure to stop into one of the historic brown bars for a drink or a meal after visiting Muiderslot castle.  You’ll feel like you stepped back in time.  Click for more information about visiting castles in the Netherlands.

The beautiful Dutch city of Naarden seen from above

This atmospheric star-shaped fortress city in the Netherlands is widely considered one of the best Dutch cities to explore due to its well-preserved walls/moat and beautiful houses.

It is an easy train ride from Amsterdam to Naarden and you’ll find that there’s plenty of things to do outside of Amsterdam if you discover this beautiful Dutch city at your own pace.

Although there’s so many cute towns in the area, experiencing Naarden means that you’ll also get a glimpse into Dutch history as it has one of the oldest churches in the Netherlands (dating back to 1572!).  Perfect for a half-day trip from Amsterdam or a day trip combined with visiting Muiden.

Best cities to visit in South Holland (Includes best cities to visit in Zuid Holland, Brabant, and Limburg)

A bit further from Amsterdam, you’ll find the cities of South Holland, Brabant, and Limburg. This area is about 1-3 hours from Amsterdam, but these towns/cities are rich in culture, history, and beauty. (Sometimes less!)

Leiden, one of the cutest cities in the Netherlands to visit. Read why you should visit Leiden as a day trip from Amsterdam.

This charming university town only thirty minutes from Amsterdam is full of charm, stunning canals, beautiful Dutch canal houses, and so few crowds that you’ll be wondering where everyone is.  Leiden can be mistaken for Amsterdam if you show the right photo although once you visit the historic Pieterskwartier, you won’t want to return to the crowds in the Red Light District.

Click for a complete guide to Leiden

‘s-Hertogenbosch / Den Bosch:

Photo of Den Bosch, one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands to visit.

‘s-Hertogensbosch, or Den Bosch for short, is the capital city of North Brabant, famous for its hospitality, good food and people who know how to enjoy life.

Den Bosch is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands with city rights dating back to 1185. One of the most remarkable sights is the Gothic St. John’s Cathedral, built between 1380 and 1530. During a recent renovation on one of the flying buttresses, there was added a statue of an angel holding a cell phone.

Those who love art can visit the Jheronimus Bosch Art Centre to learn about Den Bosch’s most famous painter (Hieronymus Bosch). From the tower of the Centre, you will have a breathtaking view of the city. A different way to see Den Bosch is to take a boat tour on the Binnendieze through the city’s canals, including under many of the buildings.

There are also markets on the main square on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  Many restaurants are located at the Markt, De Parade and Vismarkt squares and on the streets: Korenbrugstraat and Korte Putstraat.

The specialty of Den Bosch is the  Bossche bol – a gigantic profiterole covered with dark chocolate and filled with whipped cream. Den Bosch is a perfect destination for a one-day trip, however, my advice is to stay a few days extra so that you can thoroughly enjoy the city.  During Carnaval, the city changes names and turns into a giant party in the streets.

Den Haag / The Hague

Photo of Binnenhof, the building used for government meetings in the Netherlands

Den Haag is often overshadowed by Amsterdam, but it is full of fantastic museums as well as historic architecture. Although Amsterdam is the capital, the Hague is the third-largest city in the Netherlands and the home of Dutch Parliament.

For history geeks, it’s also the home of the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court in addition to hosting many of the main governing bodies of the Netherlands. One of the ones not to miss is the beautiful Binnenhof, which was a castle originally built in the 13th century to house counts. It is now used for meetings of the cabinets. (The Hague is about 1 hour from Amsterdam.)

Den Haag is also full of hofjes (historic courtyards that used to be almshouses), fantastic museums, and a lively Chinatown. For math and art geeks, you can visit the Escher Museum, which is housed in a former palace. The building is beautiful, but the art is even more fascinating.

Even more famous is the Mauritshuis, which houses  Girl with the Pearl Earring  and The   Goldfinch . If you’re an art geek with a love for the Dutch Golden age, this beautiful museum in a palatial setting is a must-see during your trip.

If you’re in Den Haag, don’t miss the Netherlands’ most famous boardwalk along the beach:  Scheveningen . The pier is a day in itself with tons of activities for couples and families alike!

Windmill in the fortified Dutch city of Heusden

Heusden is a small fortified town on the River Maas. A bird view of the town is pretty amazing, as it looks like a star from the air. Heusden is the perfect destination for slow travel in the Netherlands as you can walk along the old city walls, get lost in the narrow streets, or sit at café Havenzicht to watch the yachts passing by.

The town was built in the early 13th century to replace a castle destroyed by the Duke of Brabant. The stronghold played a significant role in the Eighty Years’ War (1568-1648) against Spanish dominance. In the 70’s the town has been completely restored based on a map from 1649.

There are many places to eat in Heusden, but you should try the Dutch pancakes at De Pannekoekenbakker.  When walking around in Heusden, there are many art galleries, including the shop of famous Dutch footwear designer Jan Jansen.

(Thanks to Daniela from  Ipanema Travels To.. .)

Photo of Baarle-Nassau, the Dutch/Flemish city with mixed borders.

Baarle-Nassau is one of those bizarre oddities you need to see to believe. Its misshapen borders are tightly entwined with the Flemish enclave of Baarle-Haartog, thanks to a handful of fickle treaties in medieval days of yore.

The task of figuring out which country a building resides in is so confusing that the town had to create a rule: country of residence is determined by which country the front door opens into. Since taxes in Belgium are lower, that led to a rush to renovate houses to have doors opening to the Belgian side!

The queer little town(s) merits a day trip at the very least. A scenic cycle, drive, or bus ride from nearby Tilburg will bring you to its wacky borders, marked on the ground with small crosses.

You can pick up a pannenkoek (pancake) at De Pannenkoekenbakker on the Dutch side, then hop over to Belgium to sample a Flemish brew or three at De Lantaern. No passport necessary! (Thanks to Alex, Lost with Purpose .)

The beautiful Gouda Stadshuis, the oldest gothic city hall in the Netherlands. Do not miss this beautiful piece of Dutch architecture when visiting Holland! #travel #gouda #holland #netherlands

Gouda is known for its world-famous cheese, but the city has so much more.  It is only 55 minutes by train and compact, so you can easily make it one of your day trips from Amsterdam and it is a must-see for the Netherlands if you’re a cheese lover.  Thanks to Maartje!

The impressive Town Hall on the central market square is a unique monument not to miss! Courtyards: the oldest yard dates back to even 1449!  St Jan church is the tallest church in the Netherlands and has huge stained glass windows. Look up and admire the facades of the Gouda houses with special ‘gevelstenen’, some even date back to 1609.

Stroopwafels are traditional Dutch syrup waffles. Try the waffles at Van Vliet bakery, where thousands are freshly baked daily on Lange Groenendaal street.

The Gouda cheese market occurs from April to the end of August. On Thursday mornings you can witness cheese making, cheese trading and weighing cheese in de Waag.

Click for a complete guide to Gouda

View of the Erasmus bridge in Rotterdam. Enjoying the views of this famous bridge is one of the best things to do in Rotterdam.

Rotterdam is one of the largest cities in the Netherlands with a population only second in size to Amsterdam.  If you’re looking for another city to visit, Rotterdam is where to go in the Netherlands besides Amsterdam due to its dramatically different cityscape.

Most of Rotterdam was destroyed in World War II, so they’ve had to rebuild everything. For modern architectural buffs, Rotterdam is a great place to explore for its architecture, including the famous Blaak cube houses and the Rotterdam Market Hall. You can go up the Euroscope and take in the panoramic view of Rotterdam.

There are a number of good restaurants in Rotterdam, including Guliano (Italian) and Takumi (Japanese ramen). Rotterdam has the largest Asian population in the whole Netherlands, so Chinatown is where to go for Asian food. Rotterdam is a great city for nightlife.

The Witte de Withstraat street is Rotterdam’s bar street. I personally loved Wunderbar, which is a bar that is below ground but allows you to order through a window on the street level.  (Thanks to Tendelle .)

Click for a complete guide to Rotterdam

Beautiful street in Maastricht, a beautiful city in the south of the Netherlands

Maastricht is one of the most charming cities in the Netherlands and it can be easily explored in a weekend. The city is perfect for a slow, romantic weekend spent exploring a beautiful cathedral bookstore, strolling the tangled streets, touring historic caves, and eating/drinking delicious regional cuisine at affordable prices.

It’s a scenic 2.5-hour train ride each way south to Maastricht from Amsterdam and it costs about 25 euros per way. Its proximity makes it easy to hop over to Aachen, Germany for only 5 euros.

Recommended for a weekend trip from Amsterdam or a 1-2 day stopover between the Netherlands and Germany if you’re Eurorailing!

Read more about Maastricht here .

Photo of Delft at sunset. Perfect day trip around amsterdam and one of the most beautiful places to visit in the netherlands

Delft is a quaint medieval town close to Rotterdam. about 1 hour from Amsterdam It’s well-known for being home to the Delft University of Technology, so it’s a vibrant and international university town.

The “Delft blue pottery” is famous from here, and many collectors flock to Delft to buy this special pottery as a Dutch souvenir. Don’t miss the Nieuwe Kerk’s impressive view over the city (and sizeable climb). Click to see how you can visit a Delft factory for free.

The city center of Delft is very beautiful. One of the hidden gems is that below street level and at the canal-level, there are tucked away benches for people to sit on. These benches are hidden from plain sight, perfect for a romantic date spot.

You can read a complete guide to Delft here as I routinely visit this beautiful Dutch city!

Central cities to visit in the Netherlands

Beautiful skyline of Utrecht, a beautiful city near Amsterdam

Utrecht is the 4th largest city in the Netherlands and it’s the major Dutch city south of Amsterdam (only 40 minutes!). Utrecht is also a very old city that dates back to 1122 and it is the kind of city that you can get (happily) lost in.

I highly recommend exploring the beautiful and compact city center on foot, there are beautiful old houses, pretty canals and lots of cozy cafes (some with cellars opening up to the canals).  Its canals are two stories, unlike Amsterdam’s canals.

One must-visit is the Dom Tower, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands (112 meter high). Other interesting places to visit are the Railway Museum and Neude. For kids, there’s the Miffy museum.

If you’re planning a trip around the Netherlands and you’re looking for a good base in the Netherlands, Utrecht is perfect as it is exactly in the center of the Netherlands and it has reasonable accommodations.   (Thanks to Lotte )

You’ll hear Dutchies raving that it is one of the best Dutch cities to visit and I’m apt to agree that it is one of the top places to visit in the Netherlands outside of Amsterdam.

Click for my guide to a day trip to Utrecht .

Northern & Eastern Cities (from Amsterdam) to visit in the Netherlands

Photo of Zwolle. More about this pretty Dutch city on Wanderlustingk, a Netherlands travel blog

Just an hour by train from Amsterdam is a charming little city called Zwolle. In the centre, you will find beautiful Medieval buildings that make you feel like a princess! The streets are intimate but also have a broad range of shops and restaurants to explore. One of the most unique sites you will come upon in Zwolle is Waanders The Broeren, a beautiful bookstore situated in a 15th century church.

Designer BK Architecten elegantly designed the store without altering any of the church’s original structure. The best part is that you can enjoy the beautiful ambiance of the church over delicious food and drinks in the brasserie, nestled in the heart of the cathedral. It’s about 1.5 hours to Zwolle from Amsterdam. (Thanks to Melissa )

You can read a complete guide to things to do in Zwolle here.

Ommen by Emily. Best cities in Netherlands to visit.

Ommen is a historical city located on the banks of the Vecht River. Though it’s home to less than 9,000 residents, Ommen has been called a city since 1248, when it was granted stadsrechten (city rights) in order to protect itself from pillaging.

Today, Ommen is the ideal balance between a fun tourist spot and a serene country escape. Due to its small size and “remote” location (for the Netherlands, anyway), it remains a bit of a secret in the larger international community.

Notable spots around Ommen include the Reformed Church, the city’s oldest building (originally constructed in the 12th century), and three old-fashioned windmills – two of which are still in regular operation.

After wandering through the charming city square and narrow side streets, you can relax by the river, linger at a waterside café, or cycle through the picturesque Dutch countryside. The area is probably best known for the Bissingh – a festival that takes place every July, made up of markets, live music, and other events. The Bissingh now spans several weeks. (Thanks to Emily for this contribution).

Photo of Giethoorn, one of the most beautiful places in the Netherlands to visit!

You may have seen photos of Giethoorn although few people know it by name (or can pronounce it correctly). It really is one of the prettiest dutch towns that I’ve seen. The small village of Giethoorn is in Overijssel and it is a bus ride away from Zwolle. This little town has no streets; only bridges, canals, and bike lanes.

You can rent a boat for 15 euros (per hour) to enjoy its picturesque canals although you should bring your own drinks/food as food in the town commands tourist prices (although it is possible to stop off for some frites!).

Tip: Go late in the afternoon to avoid large groups and stay overnight to enjoy the quiet small town feel. I consider boating around Giethoorn one of my favorite experiences in any one of the Dutch cities to visit in the Netherlands.

Click for information on visiting Giethoorn from Amsterdam.

Photo of Schiermonnikoog off the coast of the Netherlands. Read about the best places to visit in the Netherlands!

Schiermonnikoog is part of a Dutch group of islands called the Waddeneilanden (Wadden islands). The island is also the Netherlands’ first National Park, and the perfect getaway for nature lovers and bike enthusiasts.

What makes this, and other islands like it, so special, is that it’s virtually car free.  Permanent residents of the island, of which there are only about 900, need a special permit to keep a car. Due to the small size and flat landscape, very few choose to do so, making Schiermonnikoog a car-free cycling paradise.

Nature lovers have plenty to look forward to on the island. Schiermonnikoog hosts the widest beach in Europe, has plenty of hiking trails, offers great bird watching opportunities, and is great for spotting sunbathing seal families.

It’s the perfect place to see the surprising variety of Dutch nature up close. If you tire of hedonism and history, head north to Schiermonnikoog to recharge your batteries, and immerse yourself in one of the most beautiful parts of the Netherlands.  (Thanks to Alex, Lost with Purpose.) [If this appealed to you, you also might love the idea of Texel , which is about 2 hours north of Amsterdam.]

Cute Dutch buildings in Groningen, a Dutch city in the east of the Netherlands

This lively student city in the north of the Netherlands is full of charm and friendly folks. It’s also home of the world’s tallest climbing wall, the Excalibur . (I can proudly say that I’ve climbed it!)

We got happily lost in the beautiful historic centre with many cute shops, art galleries, and brown bars serving up delicious local beers.  We enjoyed the incredible architecture of the University of Groningen, which was established in 1614. The campus is absolutely stunning and worth visiting. The Grote Markt has many food stands, including some amazing Venezuelan food (the best I’ve had!)

Click to read my guide to climbing Excalibur & a complete guide to Groningen written by a local.

Oldenhove Tower

The capital of Friesland, Leeuwarden, was named the 2018 European Capital of Culture and you can discover its rich history while walking around the city center.

Fryslân (Friesland) as a region has a unique culture and language (Frisian).  The unfinished church is one of Leeuwarden’s most famous landmarks although you’ll also find beautiful parks. Leeuwarden is one of Fryslân’s eleven historic cities with beautiful architecture and a rich history.   (To read more about Friesland or Leeuwarden, click here!)

Wow! This is such a comprehensive post that opened my mind to other places outside of Amsterdam. I’d heard of a few (think Utrecht and Gouda, plus Holland) but had no idea about the others. I LOVE that first picture of Haarlem too. For someone who’s from the UK it’s kinda shameful I haven’t been yet, but this will definitely come in handy if I ever do!

May 13, 2017 at 8:45 pm

Such a nice list about Netherlands! I visited Amsterdam and Utrecht before, and had great time there 🙂 So many other cities to explore!

May 13, 2017 at 8:53 pm

Pinned this interesting read! We were just discussing yesterday about how we could spend a week in Netherlands and I knew of only Rotterdam and Amsterdam!… Thanks for your inputs, now I have too much to fit in a week.. lol..

May 13, 2017 at 9:07 pm

It´s been ages since I was in Amsterdam and the coast – but never was to many of these towns on your list! Looks awesome and since I´m not all that far from NL, a road trip has to happen next year! Giethoorn looks like out of a fairytale, x

I fell in love with the Netherlands upon my first visit, but now I absolutely can’t wait to get back!

May 13, 2017 at 9:48 pm

They really are picturesque! I have only been to Amsterdam, so your post gives me inspiration to explore more for sure. Pinned for later.

May 13, 2017 at 9:49 pm

I really like Utrecht and I was lucky to be there on the Queen’s Day some years ago. Thanks for all the suggestions about other places to visit, Baarle-Nassau in particular sounds intriguing. I’ve just clicked through to your Amsterdam post as we’re going in October!

May 13, 2017 at 10:15 pm

I live very close to Naarden and it is a beautiful city. It’s also a great area for cycling through the forest. It’s nice to see an article about other places than Amsterdam. There is so much to see in the Netherlands.

May 14, 2017 at 12:18 am

Omg I cannot believe there is a TOWN called GOUDA and its actually all about CHEESE. These cities are the perfect excuse to come back to the Netherlands for more Stroopwafel 😛

May 14, 2017 at 12:36 am

I didn’t know the Netherlands have so many beautiful cities and towns. I’ve only been to Rotterdam and Maastricht but I should definitely visit some more – especially because I’m a neighbour haha.

May 14, 2017 at 9:05 am

I have only been to Amsterdam, but I’d love to see more of the Netherlands! This post was very inspiring. I’m pinning it for when I plan a return trip 🙂

May 14, 2017 at 6:29 pm

I smiled throughout this post as i have been to many of them. So much more to explore though. Thank you for this comprehensive list!

May 14, 2017 at 10:19 pm

Love this list! I’ve only ever been to Amsterdam (guilty as charged), but I’d love to see the countryside and smaller towns and maybe do a bicycle trip around the country one day!

May 14, 2017 at 11:17 pm

I have to admit that I am one of those people who has only been to Amsterdam and really haven’t had any urge to venture outside of it. This post has definitely inspired me to head back to the Netherlands though! Giethoorn looks amazing!

May 15, 2017 at 10:31 am

Explore Friesland too. There are lots of small villages like Makkum (the fishers village) a village just close by Afsluitdijk or drop by in Aldfaerserf Openluchtmuseum in Allingawier. You can visit Leeuwarden too and some other big cities in Friesland.

May 15, 2017 at 11:13 am

Hi May, Thanks for commenting. I actually just visited Friesland this weekend (for the first time) to visit Leeuwarden as well as Franeker. Super charming and I’ll be adding about 5 more cities to this list very soon, including at least one in Friesland. Driving the Afsluitdijk was really incredible. Thank you for commenting and I will include more regions soon!

May 15, 2017 at 12:16 pm

Here is an interesting one.I was once accepted for a Masters in Maastricht. Life happened, but now it’s now super high on my list! I love seeing places beyond Amsterdam, so this list is really good!

This post has definitely inspired me to visit the Netherlands ! I’d love to see the countryside, small towns and do a bicycle trip around the country 🙂 I’ve only visited Amsterdam few years ago… but there are so many places to explore outside of Amsterdam !

Karen, lovely article. However, as an American living in Den Haag, and having to answer the question quite often about the Holland/Netherlands question, I thought I might give you a bit of info. Noord Holland and Zuid Holland are the two most populated provinces, and where the largest cities are located, thus the overarching term for the country as Holland. Although you do mention Zuid Holland far into your post, at the top you only mention Noord Holland. You might want to edit to include both provinces. Bedankt!

Dear Suzanne, You are very correct. I wasn’t necessarily clear with my wording in the original copy, but I’ve updated to reflect the reality of the Randstad. Thank you for your comment. Thank you for reading. 🙂

Leiden in South Holland is also worth a visit. It’s a very old university town and it’s my husband’s hometown, incidentally. I have visited it many times and love the waterways that flow through it including the Oude Rijn.

May 15, 2017 at 8:14 pm

LOL I was reading this article and wishing you would mention my city Groningen. x

May 15, 2017 at 11:06 pm

JUST updated with Groningen. I actually intended to include it originally, but ran out of time prior to publication. I really enjoyed it, especially the lovely brown bars and the Excalibur climbing wall! Adding 4 more now to round it out at 20!

May 15, 2017 at 8:49 pm

Hello Karen, Oh wow! I’m sure you’ve visited the oldest planetarium in the world- Planetarium Eise Eisinga. I’m excited to read your next blog 🙂

May 19, 2017 at 3:14 am

Wow, this is a wonderful post! The first and last time I went to Netherlands, was when I was 16… That’s very long ago. Being from Germany, I definitely missed out on visiting the surrounding countries. You pictures are gorgeous and inspire to visit even smaller cities! It seems there are little gems everywhere!

May 19, 2017 at 8:27 am

Nice blog! Maybe you could add a fee words about the forts that were built to protect the cities from marauding armies, the Hollandse Waterlinie. The forts are converted for many different purposes. Gorinchem, where I live, has four or five of them. The city is surrounded by complete ramparts and fortifications as well, and you can visit Woudrichem/Loevestein castle plus fort Vuren by foot ferry.

Love this! We went to Amsterdam last year and checked out Utrecht which I loved. Our next destination in the Netherlands is Rotterdam so excited that it made the list as well. 🙂

May 21, 2017 at 5:56 pm

I went to Amsterdam almost two years ago and absolutely loved it! This is such a great post to explore more of the Netherlands besides the big city. I will be saving this for my travel planning!

May 24, 2017 at 10:30 am

OH MY GOSH! This is amazing. Beautiful photos, amazing experience. I envy you. 🙂

June 18, 2017 at 3:53 pm

Thanks for this post! I want to explore other parts of the Netherlands but didn’t know where to start. These towns sound awesome and I’ve actually heard of some of them. Giethoorn looks so sweet and beautiful!

Oh my God nice pictures thanks for shear it.

July 15, 2017 at 1:19 pm

I love how you also listed some lesser known places, like Zwolle and Leeuwarden. Personally, I also really love Breda and Middelburg 🙂 Oh… and Deventer.

July 17, 2017 at 11:40 am

Muiden is a very beautiful place to be.Muiden is a city and former municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland. It lies at the mouth of the Vecht and is in an area called the Vechtstreek

July 30, 2017 at 2:39 am

Hi Daphne, I was recently there and loved it. I need to update this post with the new places I’ve been recently!

August 21, 2017 at 11:45 am

I live in Amsterdam but in this kinda posts i never read anything About my home town Breda in the south. City famous for its old beautiful centre, Forrest at the south, beer, candies, carnaval, jazz festival And last but not least the Netherlands most famous DJ (Tiësto) is from this place. Good to combine with Rotterdam as there is a highspeed train from Amsterdam via Rotterdam to Breda.

November 3, 2017 at 2:58 pm

I live here for a 4 years already (in Gouda – totally agree on its appearance on your list!). I cannot really say I love Amsterdam, it is waaaaay to crowded for me… But other small cities like Haarlem, Dordrecht, Delft, Leiden….mmmm…. small and cozy :)))) For those who said they never knew Netherlands has so many beautiful places to visit – there are even more!

I’m just wrapping up a 3.5 week trip the the Netherlands, ending in Amsterdam. I started in Delft, with side trips to The Hague and Leiden; then Rotterdam, Utrecht, Maastricht and finally Amsterdam, heading to Haarlem tomorrow (which is how I found your blog). I’ve loved each place in its own way but, so far, Leiden is my favorite.

Netherlands FAQ's

The Netherlands (or Holland) may be a small country, but it`s filled with world famous icons. This country is famous for its bulb fileds, windmills, cheese markets, wooden shoes, canals of Amsterdam, masterpieces of Old Masters, Delft Blue earthenware, innovative water management and millions of bicycles. As you explore the Netherlands you`ll find photogenic spots at every nook and cranny, a hipster coffee scene, an up and coming food scene and loads of wonderful museums. While its most well-known city is Amsterdam, there are plenty of other beautiful cities that you will want to explore as well.

No visit to the Netherlands (Holland) is complete without a visit to the capital city, Amsterdam ; however, there are so many more thrilling sites to see in the Netherlands. From the beautiful fields of flowers, traditional windmills to historic town centers filled with museums and sights to explore, this country has so much to see and do. While you are exploring the country make sure to take a visit to Europe`s busiest port, Rotterdam , which is also the most modern city in the Netherlands. Haarlem is another beautiful town located on the river Spaarne, situated just 12 miles from Amsterdam and near the coastal dunes. Then there is the rich Middle Age history of Utrecht which is home of the largest college in the country. Maastricht is located in southern Holland and is home to the impressive sain Servatiur Church, the Saint Jan`s Cathedral, and the old fortification that bring many visitors here. Many annual festivals take place here and it also boasts a bustling town squre with amazing cafes, hip bars and interesting galleries and shops. The Hague is the largest Dutch city on the North Sea, the set of the government and also the place where Queen Beatrix lives. Another picturesque city is the beautiful Leiden where you`ll find tree-lined canals that are marked with old windmills, wooden bridges, and lush parks, you`ll definitely want your camera ready in this town. These are just a few of the towns and cities to visit in the Netherlands that are not to be missed, and most are easily accessible.

The best time to visit weather wise is from mid April to mid October. July and August are the peak months for visitors, when the weather`s at its finest. The weather overall is never severely cold or hot as the temperatures are influenced by the North Sea (the Netherlands has a maritime climate). If you favor off-season travel, you`ll find the country every bit as attractive during these months. Not only are hotels and restaurants cheaper and less crowded, but some very appealing events also take place. Peak tourist season in the Netherlands runs from April to August and mid-December to early January. What should be remembered is that although the weather is at its best during these months (April - August), the museums especially are extremely busy. If Keukenhof or tulips are a consideration, the time to visit the Netherlands is from mid-April to mid-May when the bulb fields are in full color. No matter when you decide to visit, prepare for rainy weather. Even summer days can be grey and wet, so always bring a coat and umbrella. Overall, there is no worst time to visit Amsterdam; the city truly provides year-round entertainment. Here is an overview of the Netherlands in all four seasons that will help you make a decision on the best time of year for you to visit.. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit Netherlands .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

Getting around the Netherlands is rarely a problem: it`a a small country, and the longest journey you`re ever likely to make, say from Amsterdam to Maastricht, takes under three hours by train or car. Furthermore, the public transport system is well organized, a fully integrated network of trains and buses that brings even the smallest of villages within easy reach, and at very reasonable prices too. Train and bus stations are almost always next door to each other, and several of the larger cities also have a tram network. By Train: The best way of travelling around the Netherlands is by train. The system is largely, though not exclusively, operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). NS trains are fast, mostly modern, frequent and prompt; fares are relatively low; and the network of lines comprehensive. NS domestic services come in two types: the speedy Intercity for city-to-city connections; and the Stoptrein, (or Sprinter), which operates on local routes and stops pretty much everywhere. Several other train companies operate long-distance/international, high-speed services across the Netherlands, principally Fyra (www.fyra.com) and Thalys (www.thalys.com), whose services connect Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and ICE trains linking Amsterdam with Utrecht and Arnhem. At larger train stations in the Netherlands, there are separate hi-speed train ticket desks. By car: For the most part, driving round the Netherlands is pretty much what you would expect: smooth, and fairly easy. The country has a uniformly good road network, with most of the major towns linked by some kind of motorway or dual carriageway, though traffic jams are far from rare. Rules of the road are straightforward: you drive on the right, and speed limits are 50kph in built-up areas, 80kph outside, 120kph on motorways – though some motorways have a speed limit of 100kph, indicated by small yellow signs on the side of the road. Drivers and front-seat passengers are required by law to wear seat belts, and penalties for drunk driving are severe. There are no toll roads, and although fuel is expensive, the short distances mean this isn`t too much of an issue. Most foreign driving licenses are honored in the Netherlands, including all EU, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand ones. When renting a car, all the major international car rental agencies are represented in the Netherlands. To rent a car, you’ll have to be 21 or over (and have been driving for at least a year), and you`ll need a credit card - though some local agencies will accept a hefty cash deposit instead. By Bicycle: One great way to see the Netherlands is to travel by bike (fiets). Cycle-touring can be a short cut into Dutch culture and you can reach parts of the country - its beaches, forests and moorland – that might otherwise be (relatively) inaccessible. The mostly flat landscape makes travelling by bike an almost effortless pursuit, although you can find yourself battling against a headwind or swallowed up in a shoal of cyclists commuting to work. The short distances involved make it easy to see most of the country with relative ease, using the nationwide system of well-marked cycle paths: a circular blue sign with a white bicycle on it indicates an obligatory cycle lane, separate from car traffic. Red lettering on signposts gives distances for fairly direct routes; lettering in green denotes a more scenic (and lengthy) mosey. Long-distance (LF) routes weave through the cities and countryside, often linking up to local historic loops and scenic trails. You can rent a bike from most NS train stations for about €7.50 a day, plus a deposit of anywhere between €50 and €150 depending on the model. Most bikes are single-speed, though there are some 3-speeds to be had, and even mountain bikes in the hillier south. You`ll also need some form of ID. The snag is that cycles must be returned to the station from which they were rented, making onward hops by rented bike impossible. Most bike shops (and there are many) rent bicycles out for around the same amount, and they may be more flexible on deposits: some may accept a passport in lieu of cash. In all cases, advance reservations are advised. Taking your bike on an NS train is allowed and the bike carriages have a clear cycle symbol on the outside. You`ll need to buy a flat-rate ticket (dagkaart fiets; about €6) for your bike, which is valid for the whole day. Space can be limited and because of this you won`t be allowed on with your bike during the morning and evening rush hours (6:30-9am and 5:30-6pm), except in July and August. Note that in the larger cities in particular, but really anywhere, you should never, ever, leave your bike unlocked, even for a few minutes - bike stealing is a big deal in the Netherlands. Almost all train stations have somewhere you can store your bike safely for less than a euro.

The currency of Netherlands is the Euro. US dollars are not accepted. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for euros upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at the airport and many locations throughout the city. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Netherlands .

The official language of the Netherlands is Dutch. English may be spoken at your hotel and in the tourist areas, but not everywhere. We suggest you get a good English-Dutch guidebook and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

17 Places to Visit in the Netherlands That Aren't Amsterdam

By Caitlin Morton and Katherine LaGrave

Delft

Amsterdam is probably the first stop on anyone's trip to the Netherlands—and for good reason. But there is so much more to this small country (about one-third the size of Pennsylvania) than its capital city. Think rows of windmills, fields of tulips , and cities bursting with culture and charm. Luckily for you, it's all just a short drive or train ride away from that main city hub. Here's a list to get you started.

This piece was originally published in May 2018. It has been updated with new information.

Affectionately referred to as the "Venice of the Netherlands," this village's thatched roof farmhouses and wooden arch bridges can be explored via bike lanes or canals—either by boat, or by ice skating during the frozen winter months.

Beemster Polder

Beemster Polder

About thirteen miles north of Amsterdam, the Beemster region is an example of a Dutch polder—a flat piece of green farmland formed by draining a body of water. Aside from its cultural significance (it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999), Beemster Polder is a gorgeous landscape, complete with little canals, windmills, and lush, green fields. Make sure to stop by Middenbeemster, which, like most towns in the country, is impossibly charming.

Utrecht

The canals of Utrecht have two stories, where centuries-old wharf cellars now serve as spots to enjoy food and drinks at water level—something unique to this city. You can also enjoy the towering churches and cozy cafes of Utrecht via cycling, as it's one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. It's also the perfect place for history buffs, with sites like the Dom Tower and Centraal Museum offering glimpses into the country's past.

De Hoge Veluwe National Park

De Hoge Veluwe National Park

This park is one of the largest in Holland, and within its 13,343 acres, counts rare wildlife, some of the most iconic buildings in the Netherlands, and the Kröller-Müller museum, which showcases a collection of nineteenth and twentieth century art in addition to the largest private collection of Van Goghs . Zoom around on a (free) white bike—the park has 1,800 available for rent.

Many people flock to Delft for its eponymous blue pottery, but don't overlook the unspoiled town's Renaissance architecture and Vermeer Centre museum (the Dutch painter, famous for such works as Girl with a Pearl Earring and The Milkmaid , was born and died here).

Texel Island

Texel is the largest and most populated of the West Frisian Islands, also known as the Wadden Islands, due to their location in the Wadden Sea. The island offers landscapes unlike anything else on the mainland, including sweeping sand dunes, salt marshes filled with lavender , and beaches lined with bungalows.

Beloved by photographers and available to rent on Airbnb, the Piet Blom-designed cube houses are reason enough to visit the country's second-largest city. But so are the bars and restaurants, soaring Erasmus Bridge, and LED-lit Market Hall.

The village of Kinderdijk is probably what comes to mind when you imagine a bucolic Dutch countryside—in other words, lots of windmills. The 19 monumental mills were built in the early eighteenth century to prevent flooding and keep soil dry, and the mill network has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997.

Located in the province of Limburg (near the Belgian border), Thorn is postcard-pretty with cobblestone roads and white-washed brick buildings. Its can't-miss attraction is the tenth-century abbey church in the town center.

Zaanse Schans

If you're looking for a snapshot of Dutch history, head to Zaanse Schans: Here, in this collection of windmills and houses, the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are brought to life. Don't miss the cheese factory .

The Hague

Amsterdam may be the capital, but the Dutch parliament meets in this stunning city on the North Sea. Within its Gothic Inner Court lie some of the country's best museums , including an homage to M.C. Escher and the Mauritshuis (which houses Girl with the Pearl Earring ).

Alkmaar has many intriguing museums and lots of medieval architecture worth checking out, but most travelers flock here for one reason: cheese . The town is known for its traditional cheese market, which takes place on Friday mornings from April to early September.

Often dubbed "Little Amsterdam," Haarlem has all the appeal of the capital city with none of the crowds. Make a point to visit Jopenkerk , a brewery housed in a converted fourteenth-century cathedral.

You can't visit Holland and not expect to see some technicolor tulips. There are many places around the country to view the beautiful flowers , but the Keukenhof Gardens (open from March to May) and sprawling fields around the town of Lisse are a sure thing.

Volendam

This picturesque fishing village is Holland’s best-known for a reason: it's filled with colorful wooden houses, bobbing fishing boats, and seafood stall after seafood stall dishing up fish and chips, smoked eel, and pickled herring piled high with onions.

Wadden Sea

This coastal wetland—a UNESCO World Heritage site , and the "largest unbroken system of intertidal sand and mud flats in the world"—is home to a number of animal species including the harbor seal, grey seal, and harbor porpoise. There are some 50 islands here; the Netherlands "owns" five of them.

Eindhoven

If you like technology and design, head to Eindhoven. Don't miss the Van Abbemuseum (modern and contemporary art), Strijp-S (a creative and cultural center housed in an industrial park), and the Inkijkmuseum (a micro museum located in a former washhouse). Looks can be deceiving: Cutting-edge Eindhoven is one of the oldest cities in Holland.

Hi, I'm Gerrit

I enjoy sharing useful tips about the beauty of this county.

Can I make a day trip to Amsterdam from London?

Yes, Amsterdam is an easy day trip from London. In this article, I will tell you exactly how. You’re not crazy thinking this is possible because it is!

I am a Dutch native and  love taking day trips across Europe . Trivial side note: this is how I met my other half. We shared a love for quick city trips. We traveled solo and thought it would be much nicer to go together.

For us, it would be the other way to London, but I know the connection well, and of course, as a  private guide in Amsterdam,  I can give you some great tips on what to do here in Amsterdam.

It’s straightforward to go on an Amsterdam day trip from London. With the arrival of the Eurostar high-speed train and countless flights between the two capitals, reaching Amsterdam in a matter of hours is possible. Flights take just over an hour, while the train takes you across in under 4 hours.

Now don’t discount the train immediately, thinking it’s slower. If you fly, you must travel to and from airports, which adds time to your trip. The Eurostar whisks you across the channel from city center to city center , which makes a huge difference!

Short on time? Or ready to book?

Find departure times and book your train tickets here.

If you’re thinking about flying, you might want to check out WayAWay to find the best prices for regular airlines and low-budget options.

What I love as a frequent flyer is their membership options , which gives you, on top of the lowest prices, extra cashback for many flights and hotels. With my code  HHFLIGHTS  you get an extra 10% off the yearly membership.

This is entirely optional. It’s an excellent tool for finding flights for everyone with or without the Plus membership.

Direct eurostar trains: tips for a smooth ride.

The idea of tunneling under the English Channel by rail has a hint of magic, at least for me. The main benefit of the train is that it offers a smoother ride than a flight, you avoid getting to and from the airport, and you have less airport hassle.

In London (UK), trains leave from St Pancras station and travel via Brussels, Rotterdam, and Schiphol to arrive at their final destination Amsterdam Centraal in the Netherlands. The journey to Brussels is about 2 hours, to Rotterdam just over 3 hours, and to Amsterdam just under 4 hours.

Now this may sound like longer than flight times, but it’s usually the faster way to get to Amsterdam because it leaves from the center of London to the city center of Amsterdam.

The first train from London to Amsterdam

Are you an early bird? The first departure from London is at 06:16 am. That train arrives in Amsterdam at 11:13, giving you a solid amount of day left to explore. But it’s early. You need about 1 hour for check-in and the formalities.

Too early for you?

You can also leave two hours later at 08:16, but you won’t be in the city until 1:13 pm. The good thing is that Amsterdam Centraal Station is right in the middle of the center of Amsterdam.

The last train back from Amsterdam to London

The last Eurostar back to London is at 18:47, which is a beautiful time, giving you plenty of time in Amsterdam. You’ll also benefit from the one-hour time difference, so you still arrive at a reasonable time in London (you get there just before 10 pm.)

PS : Trains leave from platform 15 in Amsterdam (the last one from the city center side, or the first when you enter from the north entrance). It’s also sign-posted. Make sure to go to the passport control office first.

Departure platform in Amsterdam for London bound trains.

Fares on Eurostar are similar to airline pricing. Prices go up with the demand, and usually, the earlier you book, the better price you can get. You can check prices and departures here. There is no competition on the train line. It’s Eurostar only from London. Thalys trains run between Paris and Amsterdam.

TIP:  I prefer to travel first class (Premier) to have more space to stretch my legs and watch the European countryside blur by. Regular (2nd) classes can feel more cramped.

PS: they offer two first-class price levels. These are the same in seat comfort, but the more expensive option offers extra amenities on top of a better seat. It’s up to your preference whether that is worth it to you. For me, the seat is most important.

Flight Options: Making the Most of Your Day Trip to Amsterdam

There are three advances to flying compared to traveling by train.

  • There are so many flights every day: you can depart every hour.
  • It’s often cheaper to fly than to take the train.
  • Many airports in the London area offer flights to Amsterdam.

Choosing a Low Budget or Traditional Airline

KLM, British Airways, and EasyJet offer most flights to Amsterdam from London.

If you want to fly to London Heathrow , you must choose a traditional airline. Both KLM and British Airways offer many flights daily from here.

EasyJet flies from airports like Luton, Southend (on and off), but mainly from London Gatwick. It depends on where you are in London which one works best for you.

Another fantastic airport to use if you are in central London is London City Airport . It’s small, in the city center, and offers many direct flights to Amsterdam on smaller aircraft. Both KLM and BA offer flights here.

Which London Airport to Choose?

When I travel to London for a day, I pick the airport where I need to be. I choose London City if I need to be in Central London or the Excel Convention Centre.

Gatwick is great for anything in Southern London or Central London, and Heathrow is great for anything in West London.

There is a tube connecting Heathrow with Central London, but it takes a long time, something to consider when you travel for just a day.

London Stansted doesn’t offer direct flights to Amsterdam, you could fly to Eindhoven, but with 90-120 minutes of travel time between Eindhoven Airport and Central Amsterdam, it’s not ideal for a day trip.

But airports. The queues, the security checks, and the frantic rush to far-away gates are often not a fun experience, but simultaneously, it makes a day trip from London possible and easily doable. It might be a reason to choose the train instead.

From Schiphol Amsterdam Airport it only takes less than half an hour to get to Amsterdam by train, so that part is easy and quick.

What To Do In Amsterdam On A Day Trip from London?

There is so much to do in Amsterdam , and when you’re coming to the city for just a few hours, it can be overwhelming to choose the right things.

Why settle for just a stroll and a bite to eat when there are so many beautiful things to explore ?

If you arrive by train, you’ll have a good 6 hours in the city , if you fly in you can extend this maybe to 8 hours . Either way, it’s enough for a meaningful visit to the city.

I created four example itineraries that take 4-6 hours to complete. All are either within walking distance from each other or a short ride on the tram network. You’ll find them here: four one-day trips in Amsterdam . Each can be done comfortably on a day trip to Amsterdam from London .

Read more: 4 Day Trips in Amsterdam: Where to Go!

Of course, you can adjust to your preferences, but they offer a great starting point to get the most out of your day.

PS : There is also a section in the article on how to get around , which trams, metro and buses to use, and also not unimportant which tickets to buy!

TIP:  If you find yourself in Amsterdam on a Saturday Morning , a great local experience is to visit the Noordermarkt, where there is an organic market, and have Apple Pie at the Winkel 43 café (this is what locals consider the best Apple Pie) both are in the Jordaan area, close to Central Station.

And you might spot me because I often come here to do my weekly shopping and get some pie!

Essential Tips for Hassle-Free Amsterdam Day Trips from London

Amsterdam is a joy to explore, but as with any city trip, a little preparation goes a long way . Especially if you’re here only for a few minutes. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Allow Enough Time

It’s tempting to cram too much into one day. However, for the best Amsterdam day trips from London try to strike a balance. Less is more . You will enjoy the things you do choose much more. Promised!

Plan Well In Advance

If you have more time, Amsterdam is great to be experienced organically, but the main attractions sell out and must be booked in advance.

If you’re here for just a few hours, it’s essential to plan so you’re not surprised by the speed of time or disappointed if something is booked.

It brings calm on a trip like this to have a plan in place and your reservations done.

Travel Light

It’s a day trip; hand luggage with essentials like a small backpack with a refillable water bottle, your passport, and perhaps an umbrella should suffice.

Amsterdam is best explored on foot or via trams. Lugging around a trolley or large bags can be cumbersome.

Everything else can be bought in Amsterdam.

You’ll also avoid baggage allowance restrictions, especially when you fly.

Punctuality Matters

Both for flights and Eurostar, you need to pass immigration and security. Ensure you account for enough time for this.

For a day trip to Amsterdam from London without checked luggage, I advise you to be at the airport or the train station at least 90 minutes in advance. To be sure, at the airport: 2 hours is better.

Even in a short day, Amsterdam leaves a genuinely lasting impression. It’s enjoyable to do something unusual, like taking a day trip and visiting another country!

London and Amsterdam are both great cities but very different indeed.

As your day ends and you return to London, you take the memories and stories with you. Hopefully, you’ve also found a few reasons to return .

Safe travels.

PS:  Do you want to spend longer in Amsterdam? Then staying overnight is not a bad idea. With so much to do, it’s easy to spend two fun days in the city and squeeze in more of its sights and attractions. Here are some hotel suggestions in Amsterdam for you.

Find A Place To Stay In Amsterdam

Find accommodation in Amsterdam for the lowest prices on your favorite platform. What's great about this map is that it shows both Hotels , as VRBO rentals (AirBNB but then cheaper).

Update your (intended) travel dates for accurate prices . TIP: Zoom out on the map (-) in the bottom right corner. This will show more options and availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can i travel from london to amsterdam for a day trip.

The two primary transit options for a day trip from London to Amsterdam are via the Eurostar high-speed train service or by flying. Both options offer efficient options and allow for a day trip to Amsterdam. Expect 4 hours of travel time each way.

How long does it take from London to Amsterdam?

The Eurostar journey from London St Pancras to Amsterdam Centraal typically takes around 3 hours and 55 minutes. If you fly instead, scheduled flights are 75-90 minutes. But if you add transportation to and from the airports and security, it equals out.

Is it better to book travel tickets in advance?

Yes, booking your Eurostar or flight tickets in advance can offer you better deals, ensure availability, and helps you plan your day trip more efficiently. The same is valid for activities you want to do. Some do sell out in advance. This article has the links you need to book.

Are there any advantages to traveling by Eurostar over flying?

Traveling by Eurostar offers several advantages, such as travel from city center to city center, no transfers, fewer restrictions on luggage, online connectivity, and a more scenic journey.

Are there any advantages to traveling by airplane over the Eurostar?

Traveling by airplane also offers several advantages. You have more different London departure airports for flights to Amsterdam, giving you options depending on where you are. There are many more flights than train departures every day. And flights tend to be a little cheaper.

What should I prioritize in Amsterdam if I only have a day?

Great questions. I created different itineraries for you . One for those short on time and not interested in museums, one that does include a museum highlight, another to see some smaller Amsterdam museums that are well worth your time, and one that includes an excursion outside the city and see something more of Holland, but still comfortably possible in a day trip.

What’s the best time to visit Amsterdam for a day trip?

While Amsterdam is beautiful year-round, there are a few things to remember. April is the busiest month due to the tulips, followed by August when Italy, Spain, and France take their vacations simultaneously. So if you can plan outside this time window, crowds will be easier to manage. Unless, of course, you want to come during tulips season for the tulips.

Can I bring back any souvenirs from Amsterdam?

There are plenty of souvenirs from Amsterdam, like Dutch cheese, tulip bulbs, or Delft pottery. Although the UK and Europe now have separate legislation after Brexit, many rules are still aligned, making importing foods easier. But other things like bulbs can be more tricky. Ask the seller if you’re unsure. And check the UK government website for the latest information.

holland city trip

Coming into the city in a couple of weeks and came across a potential option of renting my own boat and going around the canals and exploring.

I’m going to be traveling alone and this seemed like a good idea but I’m not entirely sure how easy it would be to sail a small boat without any experience.

Does anyone have any insights?

A 3-4 hour rental like this?

The canals are hectic with lot of boats. I recommend you rent boats in lakes little outside the city.

You can rent also in the Nieuwe Meer which is behind the Olympic stadium and then you will not need to be in heavy traffic.

Congestion Pricing Will Start on June 30 in New York City, M.T.A. Says

Transit officials announced the start of the program, which they have said will ease some of the nation’s worst traffic.

A multi-lane street filled with vehicles.

By Ana Ley and Winnie Hu

The first comprehensive congestion-pricing program in a major U.S. city will begin in New York on June 30, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Friday.

The plan remains contentious, however, and with months to go before its scheduled rollout, legal and political clashes could still dilute or stop it altogether. A growing number of opponents — including Gov. Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey, influential unions and some elected New York officials — recently ratcheted up their effort to block it.

The program is meant to ease some of the worst traffic in the nation, improve the city’s air quality, increase mass transit ridership and raise money to modernize the city’s subway, bus and commuter rail system. Congestion-pricing tolls are expected to generate $1 billion a year, with the revenue earmarked by law for capital projects, not operating costs.

The authority, which operates the mass transit system, also said on Friday that it had opened a portal for applicants seeking the program’s coveted discounts and exemptions. A website will guide drivers on who qualifies and how to apply.

Under the program, most passenger cars will be charged $15 a day to enter a so-called congestion zone below 60th Street in Manhattan. Trucks would pay $24 or $36, depending on their size. Taxi fares would increase by $1.25, and Uber and Lyft fares would rise by $2.50.

The program is widely unpopular by many measures. A survey of about 800 New Yorkers conducted this month by Siena College found that 63 percent opposed it. Still, out of more than 25,000 public comments about congestion pricing submitted to the transportation authority from late December to mid-March, roughly 60 percent expressed support, the authority said.

M.T.A. and federal transportation officials are defending it against six lawsuits in federal courts in New York and New Jersey that seek to halt the plan. The courts, which are expected to rule before the program starts, could possibly delay or block it.

“They are proceeding at their own risk in arrogant disregard of pending court cases,” said Jack L. Lester, a lawyer for a group of city residents who filed one of the suits.

This month, a federal judge in Newark heard arguments in a suit brought by New Jersey officials who argue that the congestion-pricing plan would shift traffic and pollution to some communities in the state as drivers try to avoid the tolls.

“We are awaiting a court ruling as early as next month on whether the M.T.A.’s unprecedented congestion-pricing scheme can go forward,” said Randy Mastro, a lawyer for the state of New Jersey, adding that “the jury is still out on this hugely flawed plan.”

The tolling rates, which the authority’s board approved last month , are still being reviewed by the Federal Highway Administration, which has already signed off on an exhaustive study of the program and is expected to approve the tolls.

Congestion pricing is expected to lower the number of vehicles coming into the zone by about 17 percent, according to a November report by an authority advisory committee. The report also said the program would reduce the total number of miles driven by motorists in 28 counties in the metropolitan region.

The fees are also supposed to discourage drivers from jamming roads and idling in gridlock, which contributes to soot and other harmful air pollutants. But some of the program’s harshest critics have pointed to evidence that certain neighborhoods could end up with dirtier air as a result of the traffic that is diverted. In response, the authority has vowed to work to diminish such potential harm .

Other cities that have adopted congestion-pricing programs, such as London, Singapore and Stockholm , have reported sharp drops in traffic and congestion.

David I. Weprin, a Democratic state assemblyman from Queens and a longtime congestion-pricing opponent, said of the plan that the authority was “trying to aggressively ram it down the public’s throat.”

“I don’t think the public wants it and I think it’s really unfair for people who have to drive and have no choice,” Mr. Weprin said. He has joined a lawsuit filed by Vito Fossella, a Republican and Staten Island’s borough president, and the United Federation of Teachers that seeks to keep the tolling plan from proceeding.

Danny Pearlstein, a spokesman for the Riders Alliance, an advocacy group, said in a statement that the start of the program “cannot happen soon enough.”

Congestion pricing, he said, “will be a win-win-win for all New Yorkers, commuters and visitors and will bring better public transit, cleaner air, and freer moving traffic.”

Dubai plans to move its busy international airport to a $35 billion new facility within 10 years

Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, will move its operations to the city-state’s second, sprawling airfield in its southern desert reaches “within the next 10 years” in a project worth nearly $35 billion, its ruler said Sunday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s announcement marks the latest chapter in the rebound of its long-haul carrier Emirates after the coronavirus pandemic grounded international travel. Plans have been on the books for years to move the operations of the airport known as DXB to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central which had also been delayed by the repercussions of the sheikhdom’s 2009 economic crisis.

“We are building a new project for future generations, ensuring continuous and stable development for our children and their children in turn,” Sheikh Mohammed said in an online statement. “Dubai will be the world’s airport, its port, its urban hub and its new global center.”

The announcement included computer-rendered images of curving, white terminal reminiscent of the traditional Bedouin tents of the Arabian Peninsula. The airport will include five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates, the announcement said. The airport now has just two runways, like Dubai International Airport.

The financial health of the carrier Emirates has served as a barometer for the aviation industry worldwide and the wider economic health of this city-state. Dubai and the airline rebounded quickly from the pandemic by pushing forward with tourism even as some countries more slowly came out of their pandemic crouch.

The number of passengers flying through DXB surged last year beyond its total for 2019 with 86.9 million passengers. Its 2019 annual traffic was 86.3 million passengers. The airport had 89.1 million passengers in 2018 — its busiest-ever year before the pandemic, while 66 million passengers passed through in 2022.

Earlier in February, Dubai announced its best-ever tourism numbers, saying it hosted 17.15 million international overnight visitors in 2023. Average hotel occupancy stood at around 77%. Its boom-and-bust real estate market remains on a hot streak , nearing all-time high valuations.

But as those passenger numbers skyrocketed, it again put new pressure on the capacity of DXB, which remains constrained on all sides by residential neighborhoods and two major highways.

Al Maktoum International Airport, some 45 kilometers (28 miles) away from DXB, opened in 2010 with one terminal. It served as a parking lot for Emirates’ double-decker Airbus A380s and other aircraft during the pandemic and slowly has come back to life with cargo and private flights in the time since. It also hosts the biennial Dubai Air Show and has a vast, empty desert in which to expand.

The announcement by Sheikh Mohammed noted Dubai’s plans to expand further south. Already, its nearby Expo 2020 site has been offering homes for buyers.

“As we build an entire city around the airport in Dubai South, demand for housing for a million people will follow,” Dubai’s ruler said. “It will host the world’s leading companies in the logistics and air transport sectors.”

However, financial pressures have halted the move in the past. Dubai’s 2009 financial crisis, brought on by the Great Recession, forced Abu Dhabi to provide the city-state with a $20 billion bailout.

Meanwhile, the city-state is still trying to recover after the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the UAE , which disrupted flights and commerce for days.

Pope Francis visits Venice in first trip outside of Rome in seven months

April 28, 2024 / 3:18 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Pope Francis made his first trip out of Rome in seven months on Sunday with a visit to Venice that included an art exhibition, a stop at a prison and a Mass.

Venice has always been a place of contrasts, of breathtaking beauty and devastating fragility, where history, religion, art and nature have collided over the centuries to produce an otherworldly gem of a city. But even for a place that prides itself on its culture of unusual encounters, Francis' visit on Sunday stood out.

Francis traveled to the lagoon city to visit the Holy See's pavilion at the Biennale contemporary art show and meet with the people who created it. But because the Vatican decided to mount its exhibit in Venice's women's prison, and invited inmates to collaborate with the artists, the whole project assumed a far more complex meaning, touching on Francis' belief in the power of art to uplift and unite, and of the need to give hope and solidarity to society's most marginalized.

Italy Pope

His trip began at the courtyard of the Giudecca prison, where he met with women inmates one by one.

"Paradoxically, a stay in prison can mark the beginning of something new, through the rediscovery of the unsuspected beauty in us and in others, as symbolized by the artistic event you are hosting and the project to which you actively contribute," Francis told them.

The 87-year-old pontiff then met with Biennale artists in the prison chapel, decorated with an installation by Brazilian visual artist Sonia Gomes of objects dangling from the ceiling, meant to draw the viewer's gaze upward.

The Vatican exhibit has turned the Giudecca prison, a former convent for reformed prostitutes, into one of the must-see attractions of this year's Biennale, even though to see it visitors must reserve in advance and go through a security check. It has become an unusual art world darling that greets visitors at the entrance with Maurizio Cattelan's wall mural of  two giant filthy feet , a work that recalls Caravaggio's dirty feet or the feet that Francis washes each year in a Holy Thursday ritual that he routinely performs on prisoners.

The exhibit also includes a short film starring the inmates and Zoe Saldana, and prints in the prison coffee shop by onetime Catholic nun and American social activist Corita Kent.

Francis' dizzying morning visit, which ended with Mass in St. Mark's Square, represented an increasingly rare outing for the 87-year-old pontiff, who has been hobbled by health and mobility problems that have ruled out any foreign trips so far this year.

"Venice, which has always been a place of encounter and cultural exchange, is called to be a sign of beauty available to all," Francis said. "Starting with the least, a sign of fraternity and care for our common home."

Italy Pope

During an encounter with young people at the iconic Santa Maria della Salute basilica, Francis acknowledged the miracle that is Venice, admiring its "enchanting beauty" and tradition as a place of East-West encounter, but warning that it is increasingly vulnerable to climate change and depopulation.

"Venice is at one with the waters upon which it sits," Francis said. "Without the care and safeguarding of this natural environment, it might even cease to exist."

Ahead of his trip, Francis sat down with "CBS Evening News" anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell during an hourlong interview at the guest house where he lives in Rome.

During the interview, Francis pleaded for peace worldwide amid the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza .

"Please. Countries at war, all of them, stop the war. Look to negotiate. Look for peace," said the pope, speaking through a translator.

He also had a message for those who do not see a place for themselves in the Catholic Church anymore.

"I would say that there is always a place, always. If in this parish the priest doesn't seem welcoming, I understand, but go and look elsewhere, there is always a place," he said. "Do not run away from the Church. The Church is very big. It's more than a temple ... you shouldn't run away from her."

The pope's Venice trip was the first of four planned inside Italy in the next three months, Reuters reported. He is scheduled to visit Verona in May and Trieste in July, and is expected to attend the June summit of Group of Seven (G7) leaders in Bari.

In September, he is also set to embark on the longest foreign trip of his papacy, traveling to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and Singapore.

An extended version of O'Donnell's interview with Pope Francis will air on "60 Minutes" on Sunday, May 19 at 7 p.m. ET. On Monday, May 20, CBS will broadcast an hourlong primetime special dedicated to the papal interview at 10 p.m. ET on the CBS Television Network and streaming on  Paramount+ . Additionally, CBS News and Stations will carry O'Donnell's interview across platforms.

Zendaya and Tom Holland's Love Story Is Straight Out of a Movie

Here's everything you need to know about Tomdaya.

Spider-Man co-stars Zendaya and Tom Holland spent years dodging questions about whether or not there was something more to their on-screen romance, but the two decided to make things official between the second and third installments of their superhero epic, giving fans everywhere exactly what they wanted.

Now, instead of brushing off rumors of being more than friends, the two have become one of Hollywood's sweetest duos, offering plenty of support to one another for their respective projects and even giving us peeks at their love life behind the scenes.

Here's everything you need to know about what fans have dubbed Tomdaya, from their very first swings together on the big screen to major red carpet moments.

April 10, 2024: Zendaya and Tom Holland kiss and hug at the Challengers London premiere

The couple are captured sweetly hugging and kissing each other at the London premiere of Zendaya's film Challengers . Holland was every inch the supportive boyfriend as he whistled, cheered, and recorded Zendaya as she was introduced.

April 9, 2024: Zendaya says Tom Holland "beautifully" handled his launch into stardom

During an interview with Vogue , Zendaya spoke about watching Holland navigate his career exploding after starring in the Spider-Man franchise.

“We were both very, very young, but my career was already kind of going, and his changed overnight. One day, you’re a kid, and you’re at the pub with your friends, and then the next day, you’re Spider-Man,” she explained. “I definitely watched his life kind of change in front of him. But he handled it really beautifully.”

The actress added that she plans to support Holland when he performs in London’s West End showing of Romeo & Juliet . She said she “could not be more proud. I’m going to try to see as many shows as I possibly can.”

Zendaya then touched on dealing with their relationship being in the public eye, specifically citing their date to the Louvre Museum in Paris in 2022. She said they were advised against going because it was busy, however, they went anyway and had a good time.

“It was actually fine,” she said. “You just kind of get used to the fact that, ‘Oh, I’m also one of these art pieces you’re going to take a picture of.’ I just gotta be totally cool with it and just live my life.”

March 17, 2024: Zendaya and Tom Holland enjoy a tennis date

Kicking off the Challengers press tour, Zendaya and Holland attend multiple games during the 2024 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, on March 17. They dressed the part, with Zendaya in a tennis-inspired ensemble composed of a cream-colored Louis Vuitton hoodie, matching pleated skirt, and white crew neck t-shirt, and Holland in a brown button-down shirt layered over a cream-colored tank top.

The couple flashed sweet smiles when they were spotted in the crowd and got groovy at one point, dancing and lip-synching to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

February 27, 2024: Zendaya shouts out Tom Holland in the cutest way

During an interview, Zendaya is asked, “If you could bring back one thing from the U.K., back with you to the States, what would it be?” To which, she gave an adorable response. “My boyfriend,” she gushed. “I would just take him with me!”

February 22, 2024: Zendaya gushes over Tom Holland’s “charisma”

Zendaya appeared on Buzzfeed’s puppy interview series—and even cuter than the puppies was what she had to say about Holland.

When asked about which of her male co-stars from Dune has the most “rizz,” she jokingly replied, “Me! Hello?” before following up with a sweet shoutout to her beau. “Rizz is short for charisma, right? Everybody’s kind of got their own,” Zendaya said. “I think someone who has beautiful charisma, not on the Dune cast, but I know personally works for me, is Mr. Tom Holland."

She continued, "I'm more shy and kind of quiet, so it takes a little bit more to pull me out of my shell, but he's great at just talking to people and getting to know people. You see him on talk shows and stuff like that. He's just naturally very good at that. Whereas for me, I've definitely had to pull it out of me a little bit. He's got that natural gift."

February 15, 2024: Zendaya and Tom Holland enjoy date night at the 'Dune: Part II' after-party

In addition to serving up two incredible looks at the Dune: Part II world premiere, including naked Mugler armor and a classic black gown, Zendaya also delivered a cute moment with her man. Stepping out in her second ensemble, the actress was captured walking hand-in-hand with Holland while leaving the after-party.

August 23, 2023: Zendaya discusses navigating her relationship in the public eye

In an interview with Elle , Zendaya spoke on balancing fame and her private life, especially when it comes to her relationship with Holland.

“Parts of my life, I accept, are going to be public,” she said. “I can’t not be a person and live my life and love the person I love. But also, I do have control over what I choose to share. It’s about protecting the peace and letting things be your own but also not being afraid to exist. You can’t hide. That’s not fun, either. I am navigating it more than ever now.”

June 27, 2023: Zendaya and Tom Holland attend a Beyoncé concert together

During Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour, the pair attended her show in Warsaw, Poland . Concertgoers spotted Zendaya and Holland singing "Love on Top" and even captured a sweet clip of the two.

June 14, 2023: Tom Holland discusses keeping their relationship private

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Holland opened up about why the couple likes to keep their relationship close to their chests.

"Our relationship is something that we are incredibly protective of and we want to keep as sacred as possible," he told the outlet. "We don't think that we owe it to anyone, it's our thing, and it has nothing to do with our careers."

February 2023: Tom Holland comments on Zendaya's Instagram post with heart-eyes

For her first red carpet appearance of the year, Zendaya wowed fans — and boyfriend — by wearing not one but two dresses to the NAACP Awards . Although she went stag, Holland was rooting for his girlfriend from the sidelines (read: social media), reacting to her Insta post with adoring heart-eye emojis.

October 2022: Zendaya and Tom Holland travel to Paris

The lovers took a couple's trip to Paris, the city of romance and culture. According to People , the two were spotted at the Louvre together.

February 2022: Zendaya and Tom Holland are spotted together at a hockey game

When we first caught sight of the pair twinning at a hockey game in matching New York Rangers jerseys, we commended them for their coordinated couple fashion. But when we realized that said jerseys were personalized with each other's names on the back (Holland wearing "Zendaya" and Zendaya "Holland"), we swooned.

September 1, 2021: Tom Holland wishes Zendaya happy birthday

A few months later, Holland commemorates Zendaya's birthday with a selfie from the Spider-Man set. In the caption, he writes as Peter Parker: "My MJ, have the happiest of birthdays. Gimme a call when your [sic] up xxx."

July 1, 2021: Zendaya and Tom Holland are spotted kissing

Hope springs eternal thanks to the paparazzi. Zendaya and Holland are photographed making out in Los Angeles. According to Page Six , the two actors were in Silver Lake with Zendaya's mom, Claire Stoermer. Of course, fans are relieved and euphoric, sending Zendaya into Twitter's trending topics.

A source told Us that the two keep each other grounded. "They both challenge each other and balance each other out," the source says, noting that Holland "makes her laugh," and Zendaya "really helps guide him through the world of celebrity."

2019-2020: Zendaya and Tom Holland promote their movie 'Spider-Man: Far From Home'

Of course, the two of them hit multiple red carpets together to promote Spider-Man: Far From Home, but things get a little murky from here. Zendaya may or may not have been dating her Euphoria co-star Jacob Elordi (they got snapped on a vacation in Greece).

Holland goes Instagram-official with girlfriend Nadia Parks on July 27, 2020. Eventually, Elordi and Kaia Gerber are a bonafide couple, leaving Tomdaya fans scratching their heads and wondering if their web-slinging hero and his real-life MJ are donezo.

A source told the Daily Mail that Parks moved in with Holland during the COVID-19 lockdown. "They made the decision to isolate together and things have been going great between them," the source says. "Tom has told friends and family they're in an official relationship and living together so soon into their romance has only made them stronger."

May 8, 2018: Tom Holland posts a photo of Zendaya from the Met Gala

Holland doesn't help the situation when he posts a pic of Zendaya from the Met Gala to his feed with the caption, "All hail the queen."

July 2017: Zendaya and Tom Holland spark dating rumors

When the two start to promote the flick together, there's naturally a lot of chemistry off the screen. Rumors start to surface, which the two neither confirm nor deny. Sources close to the two do talk, however, saying that they're keeping their relationship private.

"They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man," a source told People in July 2017. "They've been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye, but they've gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another."

Zendaya and Holland joke about it all, taking their banter onto Twitter: "Wait wait ... my favorite is when it says we go on vacations together HA! I haven't been on a vacation in years! hbu @TomHolland1996 ???" Zendaya tweeted . Holland responded, "Does the press tour count."

2016: Zendaya and Tom Holland meet on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming

Of course, Holland says that everyone on set is friendly and that Zendaya actually gave him advice on dealing with fame, something she knows a little about from her days on the Disney Channel. "We are like the best of friends. She's so great and amazing," Holland told People at the time. "I'm a little worried [about dealing with fame…but] Zendaya is super famous and she's been through this, and I just call her up and say, 'How do I manage being famous?' I'm very glad I have a friend like her."
