Best time to visit Ireland for honeymoon

Ireland has a temperate maritime climate, characterised by mild temperatures year-round, with summers rarely too hot and winters not excessively cold. This kind of climate results in abundant rainfall and frequent changes in weather !

The best time to visit Ireland for honeymoon is during the shoulder seasons of late spring / early summer (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) . These months offer a sweet spot of milder weather, fewer crowds, and the countryside in full bloom or the warm hues of autumn.

It’s the changeable weather that brings Ireland’s iconic mists and green lushness.

Days are longer from late spring to early autumn, ideal for exploring the outdoors.

While summer (July and August) promises the warmest temperatures, it also brings larger crowds and higher prices . The best weather can be anytime from May to September!

During winter, from November to February, the days are shorter and while extreme weather is rare, Ireland is generally damp, grey and windy at this time of year. Severe storms occur during winter, too.

In March, many tourists flock to Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day and the St. Patrick’s Festival celebrations.

How to get around Ireland

When it comes to navigating the Emerald Isle, your choice of transport can shape your Irish honeymoon experience.

Ultimately, the best way to see Ireland is by rental car . Although trains connect the cities and there is an extensive bus network, too.

Hiring a car means you can curate your own journey and explore the hidden gems. The Irish drive on the left. Be prepared for narrow lanes on rural roads.

Driving around the cities is not recommended as traffic can be heavy and slow. However, for intercity journeys, the train can be a great option , too. Plus, travelling by train can make your honeymoon more sustainable !

There are no high speed train options like mainland Europe, but journeys only take max 2.5 hours usually.

Within the cities – walking, cycling, taxis and buses are a great option. Uber isn’t as established in Ireland and locals use FreeNow for taxi journeys (use referral code 5b054twvy to get a discount off your first journey!).

The bus network in Ireland is extensive, linking towns and cities not served by trains. Companies like Bus Éireann and private operators offer routes that are economical.

Ireland is a fantastic cycling destination , with dedicated paths and low-traffic roads framing the coastline, valleys, and mountains.

You could also opt for an Ireland honeymoon road trip camper van / RV.

In certain areas, particularly the national parks and coastal paths, your own two feet are the most rewarding mode of transport. Ireland is a hiker’s paradise with trails for all levels.

On your Ireland honeymoon, beautiful rural mountain and coastal scenes are never too far away!

If you choose not to drive , it’s best to stay in the cities or larger towns so you can book excursions.

Ireland Honeymoon Itinerary

An Ireland honeymoon will be magical and each corner of the country has its gems that are worth exploring.

The island is around 84,421 km2 (32,595 sq mi). However, despite being relatively small (about the size of South Carolina), the road network means that it could take you 8 hours to drive from the northern point at Malin Head to the southern point at Mizen Head !

Here is a suggested 14-night / two week Ireland honeymoon itinerary with some suggestions of where to leave out and add on. Whether you have time for a 7 day Ireland honeymoon or 10 day Ireland honeymoon road trip – we’ve got you covered.

This itinerary is jam packed but it’s just a suggestion. You can customise it to your preferences and budget.

Don’t forget to carve some time for relaxing in one of the beautiful country manor houses or majestic castle hotels!

Let’s plan the Ultimate Ireland Honeymoon Itinerary !

Belfast (2 Nights)

Start your Ireland honeymoon in Belfast , a city where the Titanic’s legacy sails on and street art narrates history with vibrant strokes.

This is a city of history. Our top pick is to discover Belfast on one of the Black Taxi Tours , giving you an insider’s view of the city’s complex past .

Don’t miss a night out in the Cathedral Quarter, where cobbled streets buzz with pubs and cultural vibes.

The next day visit the UNESCO-listed Giant’s Causeway and Game of Thrones filming locations on an excursion from the city .

Before you drive or take the afternoon 2-hour train going south to Dublin, spend a morning at the Titanic Belfast , an architectural marvel that tells the poignant tale of the ship’s constructio n and tragic maiden voyage, right where it all began.

Dublin (3 Nights)

Welcome to the capital of Ireland! Dublin is a treasure trove of literary greatness and Georgian elegance.

Most people will tell you to go straight for Temple Bar for a pint of Guinness. However, one drink might be enough here due to the high tourist prices.

Instead, head for the bars and restaurants a 5-minute walk away along George’s St and South William St . Have dinner and drinks at the Blind Pig.

The next day make a beeline for the Guinness Storehouse . This is Ireland’s top tourist attraction and the panoramic views from the Gravity Bar of low-rise rooftops are pretty cool!

Spend the afternoon at your leisure. You may want to see the 1200-year-old Book of Kells at Trinity College. The entrance fee is worth it alone to visit the Old Library .

You could visit one of the many museums dotted around the city. Kilmainham Gaol, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, The Little Museum of Dublin, the National Gallery, the Chester Beattie Library in Dublin Castle.

You could take a Jameson Distillery tour for whiskey tastings, take a bike ride around the Phoenix Park (one of Europe’s biggest urban parks), go shopping on Grafton Street or just relax in a pub for afternoon.

At night, experience a night of traditional Irish music at the Cobblestone Pub (go for dinner in L. Mulligan Grocer around the corner beforehand!).

Next day day, you have one full day to explore and we recommend spending it outside of the city centre .

Opt for a day trip on the train to the seaside village of Howth . Hike Howth Head and have fish and chips afterwards in Crabby Joes.

You could take a day trip to the Hellfire Club in the Dublin Mountains for the spooky derelict building where it’s said the devil appeared because of the debauched behaviour of members of the club. Many tourists miss this spot but the views of the city are fantastic.

One of our top picks is a day trip to the the Garden of Ireland, neighbouring County Wicklow which is packed full of gems.

Visit the round tower at the ancient monastic site of Glendalough .

Take the hike past Lough Tay and the fascinating home of Luggala which was owned by the Guinness ancestor, Garech Brown and has seen famous faces from the Beatles to Rolling Stones, Lucian Freud and Michael Jackson, to name a few.

Galway & Mayo (2 Nights)

It’s time to hit the road to County Galway and County Mayo.

Galway is arguably the bohemian heart of Ireland, thriving on live music, art, and the spoken word along with national sports pastime, GAA and a wonderful foodie scene.

You can stay in the city and spend an evening roaming the Latin Quarter and the Spanish Arch, where lively pubs await.

The following day it’s time to discover the quiet, hauntingly beautiful landscapes of Connemara , where mountains dip into crystal lakes and some of Ireland’s most beautiful beaches such as Dog’s Bay.

This is a magical part of Ireland where you’ll find Ireland’s native tongue spoken.

🤍 ✈️ where to stay: Ballynahinch Castle Check prices and book on:

Clare (2 Nights)

The next day it’s time for one of the highlights of this Ireland honeymoon itinerary and the Wild Atlantic Way , a scenic drive from Galway through County Clare.

From small towns, to wild beaches, ancient ruins and otherworldly landscapes, there is so much to squeeze into your Ireland honeymoon itinerary in Clare.

Start with a stop at Ballyvaughan and Corcomroe Abbey (don’t miss a pitstop at Hazel Mountain Chocolate for some treats).

This is the gateway to the Burren National Park – a lunar landscape of limestone that blooms with wildflowers in spring.

Take a quick stop at the highlights of this ancient Irish land, maybe go for a dip in the wild Atlantic ocean at Fanore Beach, visit the ancient 5000-year-old Poulnabrone Dolmen and buy some of the best souvenirs at the Burren Perfumery .

The Cliffs of Moher , another of Ireland’s top sights, commands the coastline with breathtaking grandeur. You can pop into the visitor centre and also hike along the coast. Watch out for windy days!

You can opt for an afternoon of surfing or a hike between Lahinch and Doolin. Have a music-filled night in a cosy pub in these west of Ireland towns.

🤍 ✈️ where to stay: dromoland castle Check prices and book on:

County Kerry (3 Nights)

Now it’s time for one of the true highlights of any Ireland honeymoon itinerary, the stunning Kingdom of County Kerry .

Choose to base yourself in one of the beautiful hotels around Killarney and take day trips or take it more slowly and stop each night at a quaint B&B.

On the first day of your Kerry exploration, start early and head straight for a drive on the Dingle Peninsula . This is one of our favourite spots to add to an Ireland honeymoon.

Don’t miss the Slea Head drive where stunningly wild and romantic landscapes await. If you have time the sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean are magical.

Dingle is one of Ireland’s best towns with lively pubs and streets, beloved by locals and tourists alike. If the weather is nice (or even if it isn’t) you might opt to dip your toes in the cold Atlantic Ocean at Inch Beach .

The following day, drive the Ring of Kerry for the stunning vistas of mountains, lakes, and the Atlantic Ocean, starting in Killarney and ending in Kenmare.

Don’t miss the chance to get off the beaten track on a detour through the beautiful Skellig Ring – slightly off the beaten track as huge bus tours don’t go that way.

Out on the Atlantic Ocean you’ll see Skellig Michael, an ancient monastic outpost on a rocky island, which captured the world’s imagination in recent cinema blockbusters Star Wars . Don’t miss the Skellig boat trip (time and weather permitting).

On Valentia Island, the wild edge of Europe, you can discover a fascinating piece of history.

Over 150 years ago, the laying of the first successful transatlantic telegraph cable from Valentia Island to Newfoundland was dubbed the Eighth Wonder of the World.

It revolutionised global communications by reducing message delivery time across the ocean from weeks to minutes.

On your third day in County Kerry, have a day of rest day. You can opt for a wild swim, a spa day, go for a horse riding our or even a leisurely stroll around Muckross House or a gentle walk in Killarney National Park.

County Cork (2 Nights)

Then it’s time for the end of the Wild Atlantic Way. Spend the day driving via the 250km scenic route from Killarney to Cork.

You’ll truly feel at the edge of Europe driving through the stunning landscapes of West Cork. Take a detour on the Beara Peninsula if you’re not maxed out on driving.

Stop at cute towns like Skibbereen (you could stay for a night at the heavenly Liss Ard Estate ) and Kinsale before staying in or around Cork City for 2 nights.

Opt for a final dinner in a Michelin-star restaurant and relax in a luxury hotel in the south of Ireland.

If you have more time

If you have more time to spend on your Ireland honeymoon, you could extend your trip to any of the destinations.

In the north, there are other gems like the city of Derry where history looms large and it’s just a short drive to Ireland’s most northerly county, the beautiful, more off the beaten track, County Donegal .

In Dublin, you could easily spend a week seeing all the sights but if you have time spend a couple of days in County Wicklow, stay in Powerscourt Hotel , and explore more of Wicklow.

The Ancient East has some hidden gems like Cliff House Hotel in Waterford (you could extend your itinerary from Cork to here, too!)

Just 90-minutes from Dublin, in the Midlands, is one of the best honeymoon hotels not just in Ireland but in the world, Ballyfin . There isn’t enough superlatives to describe the level of service and luxury at this meticulously restored country manor.

One of Ireland’s most beautiful Irish castles, Ashford Castle is just a 45-minute drive away from Galway, too and very convenient for exploring Connemara – you won’t regret this addition to your Ireland honeymoon itinerary.

If you’re planning an Ireland honeymoon on a tighter budget – the adjacent Lodge at Ashford Castle is a great option.

Take a boat trip to the Aran Islands from Galway or Clare. Inishmore, Inishmaan and Inisheer are stunning and some of the best places for dreamy remote Irish landscapes.

En route to Kerry you may want to stop at Adare Manor or take a detour to Tipperary for the Rock of Cashel. This is a popular tourist attraction, and made even more appealing by the recent opening of the Cashel Palace Hotel .

In Cork, you may want to add on an excursion to kiss the Blarney Stone at Blarney Castle

If you have less time

If you have limited time for your Ireland honeymoon, we recommend you focus on a some key destinations.

If you have 7 nights or less for your Ireland honeymoon pick two bases (we like Dublin or Galway with Kerry).

If you have 10 nights or less for your Ireland honeymoon you could squeeze in a third or extend your time.

If you have less time than this for your Ireland honeymoon, opt for a romantic escape in a beautiful luxury hotel in the countryside so you can experience rural Ireland

When planning your Ireland honeymoon itinerary, remember that  2 nights will only give you 1 full day to explore or relax, 3 nights = 2 full days, 4 nights = 3 full days, and so on .

Don’t underestimate time spent packing up, checking out, driving, checking in and unpacking.

Ireland Honeymoon Frequently Asked Questions

Is ireland good for honeymoon.

Absolutely! For couples who don’t need tropical scenes , Ireland’s wild coastline, beautiful hotels, great food and ancient history make it a compelling honeymoon destination with a difference.

While an Ireland honeymoon is enchanting, couples should keep an open mind with the extremely unpredictable weather.

Ireland is also not the cheapest destination and if you can avoid the peak months of late June to August, prices and crowds abate, making an Ireland honeymoon much more enjoyable.

What’s the difference between Ireland and Northern Ireland

The big question – Ireland can refer to the whole island of Ireland or the 26 county independent part in the southern and central parts of the island.

While some will call the 26 counties Southern Ireland, this is not an official title or a title used by Irish people.

Ireland operates under a parliamentary democracy and uses the Euro (€) as its currency.

Northern Ireland, or just known as ‘the north’ to most Irish people, is in the island’s northeast, part of the province of Ulster. In 1921 the country split and the 26 counties gained independence from Great Britain.

However, the north remained under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom, alongside England, Scotland, and Wales. It uses Pound Sterling (£), and is governed by both its own assembly and the UK parliament.

Speed limits in the north are shown in miles per hour (mph) while speed limits in the Republic of Ireland are shown in kilometres per hour (km/ h).

How to get to Ireland

Despite, or probably because of, being an island on the edge of Europe, it’s very easy to get to Ireland !

In fact, you can fly to/from nearly 200 destinations .

From the United States, there are direct flights to/from Dublin (airport code: DUB) and Shannon Airport (near Limerick city) (SNN) from most major US cities with airlines like Aer Lingus, American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta.

Flying from the UK to Ireland is a breeze with frequent, short flights to all major International airports including Dublin, Belfast (BFS & BFD), Cork (ORK) and Shannon and regional airports like Kerry (KIR), Knock (NOC) and Derry (LDY).

If you’re flying via Britain it’s worth checking out flights to regional airports which can be extremely convenient .

Within Europe, Ireland is well-connected by a network of flights from major destinations across the continent. It’s worth checking Ryanair, Aer Lingus, Vueling (and Easyjet from Belfast).

Some routes will only be operational during the summer season.

How long should we stay in Ireland on honeymoon

As you can see, there are so many things to add to your Ireland honeymoon itinerary!

The ideal duration of an Ireland honeymoon itinerary can vary depending on personal preferences and budget.

10 – 14 nights is ideal for a honeymoon in Ireland . For couples who have less time, we’d recommend at least 7 nights which will allow you to recover from jet lag (if necessary) and catch some highlights like a city and a short road trip.

Is Ireland expensive

A honeymoon tour of Ireland can be on the pricier side , given the higher costs for accommodation and activities.

However, the cost of an Ireland honeymoon can vary widely depending on travel style, season, and regions visited.

It is possible to eat cheaply and most of the scenery and nature including some beautiful hikes are free.

Should we use a travel agent to book an Ireland honeymoon

A good travel agent or tour operator who books Ireland honeymoons regularly will usually have a direct relationship with a destination management company in the country, meaning a smooth journey.

They may have preferential rates, so it’s definitely worth checking things with a trusted travel agent. Planning with a professional can have benefits .

However, booking a D-I-Y Ireland honeymoon package is easy . We’d recommend choosing a flexible hotel rate with free cancellation with Booking.com . You can get great discounts with their loyalty programme.

You can book transfers easily, along with tours and excursions on GetYourGuide or Viator and car hire with RentalCars.com

When you’re booking flights, if you can’t fly directly and are booking connecting flights, give yourself enough time to change aeroplanes.

We’d recommend at least a 2 to 3-hour layover for a stress-free experience.

Don’t forget to have travel insurance in place before booking!

Is Ireland safe for a honeymoon

Ireland is a safe destination for a honeymoon .

Like any other country, it’s important to take common-sense precautions, such as leaving your valuables at home, particularly in the cities where petty crime can happen.

At night, the prevalence of alcohol can mean a looser atmosphere but generally Ireland’s reputation as friendly and welcoming is warranted, it’s unlikely you will feel unsafe.

For LGBTQ+ couples, Ireland is considered a progressive and welcoming destination.

It is the first country to legalise same-sex marriage by popular vote in 2015 and most Irish people are proud of these social changes.

This being said, local attitudes can vary as it sadly does the world over. Crimes against LGBTQ+ people can still happen, although they are rare. Discretion is always recommended.

Should we bring cash / should we tip

Cash and card are both widely accepted in Ireland and there are few places that don’t accept card these days. However, having some Euros can be useful for tipping and small incidentals.

Tipping, while not mandatory, is appreciated for good service. A tip of 10-15% would be the norm.

What to pack for an Ireland honeymoon

When packing for your Ireland honeymoon, it’s important to consider the varying climate and the activities you’ll be doing.

A waterproof jacket or raincoat is absolutely essential . You can bring an umbrella although it can be windy so they often don’t last long.

Bring layers and comfortable walking shoes.

Don’t forget a power adapter for Type G sockets, and consider bringing a rain-resistant backpack .

Dublin and other Irish cities have plenty of shops, so no need to pack too much.

Get packing with our Honeymoon Packing Bundle in the shop with outfit planners and downloadable check lists .

Where can we tag on to Ireland for a multi-destination honeymoon

As you can see, no matter how much time you have, you could easily spend your whole honeymoon in Ireland .

But there are tons of flights to other European destinations. In fact, there aren’t many European countries you can’t get to from Ireland!

From France’s culinary delights to Italy’s artistic wonders, Spain’s islands and Portugal’s cities, Ireland is a great starting point for a multi-destination honeymoon in Europe if you have more time.

It’s also common to combine Ireland with Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) offers seamless travel, rich history, and diverse landscapes.

Which is best for honeymoon, Ireland or Scotland

Scotland and Ireland have a lot in common and are closely intertwined. Gaelic roots and culture, wild green landscapes, a wry sense of humour and some would say, a love of alcohol.

Ireland is enchanting with its emerald landscapes, historic castles, and vibrant pub culture. Scotland is captivating with its rugged highlands, historic sites, mysterious lochs, and rich history.

Ireland has slightly warmer, milder weather but Scotland’s has arguably more dramatic landscapes.

Both are rich in history and culture but Ireland has an unparalleled literary scene and more ancient castles, monastic ruins, and Celtic sites.

Ireland might be slightly more accessible for those wanting to explore without extensive driving, given its smaller size and well-connected cities.

Scotland’s highlands and islands can require more effort to reach, but they reward travellers with unparalleled scenery.

We hate to sit on the fence when it comes to choosing between an Ireland honeymoon and a Scotland honeymoon but both destinations are magic .

If you have time you could do both? !

How to Plan a Romantic Honeymoon in Ireland

Discover what makes the Emerald Isle an unexpectedly ideal honeymoon destination.

Christophe Ledent / Getty Images

In This Article

With its lovely Celtic culture, mild maritime climate, flourishing food and beverage scene, quaint small towns, and dynamic cities like Dublin and Galway, Ireland is a prime honeymoon destination for any couple. The country is full of scenic drives, hidden hamlets, striking castles, crumbling ruins, dramatic vistas, and tons of natural beauty to boot.

"Ireland may not be top of mind when it comes to honeymoon destinations , but few countries offer the same depth of natural beauty, charming villages, and storybook castle hotels as the Emerald Isle," explains Juliet Izon, a travel journalist. "From innovative, Michelin-starred dining in Dublin to the jaw-dropping luxury of five-star resorts like Adare Manor, there are myriad ways to experience romance and pampering here."

Brianna Glenn, owner of Milk + Honey Travels, agrees, "Ireland is an incredible destination for a honeymoon. The whole country has such a romantic vibe, and everyone you meet is falling all over themselves to be friendly and welcoming; travelers feel such a sense of ease while there. Irish people are welcoming and warm, and the country overall is beautiful", she explains.

If all this sounds like the makings of a picture-perfect honeymoon , read on for a comprehensive guide to plan the ultimate Irish honeymoon—including what to do, spots to visit, insider tips, and where to stay.

Planning Your Ireland Honeymoon

“It has never been easier to get to Ireland with non-stop flights from 15 gateways this summer. Direct, convenient, and competitive access services are critical for encouraging vacationers to choose the island of Ireland,” shares Ruth Moran from Tourism Ireland.

Another convenient aspect of an Irish holiday is that it’s accessible in every season. According to Glenn, there is no wrong time to visit the Emerald Isle, as the weather can be unpredictable year-round. She adds, “Shoulder season, true spring and fall, are probably the best times for [both] weather and crowds. While summer can be a better bet weather-wise, the crowds are at an all-time high.” Moran expands, sharing that “the great thing about Ireland is that it never gets too hot or too cold. If you visit in Spring/Summer, you will get mild temperatures [allowing] you to access the great outdoors and discover wonderful experiences like the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland’s Ancient East. If you opt for a Fall/Winter trip, perhaps a city location might work really well. Dublin and Galway are only two hours apart and offer everything from museums to shopping to epic culinary experiences”.

While planning your trip, it’s essential to decide what areas to focus on and what highlights not to miss. The country offers numerous regions, including the Wild Atlantic Way , the Hidden Heartlands , Dublin , and the Ancient East . Each has its own distinct vibe and caters to different types of travelers. But the can’t-miss section of Ireland is the Wild Atlantic Way. According to Moran, “The western seaboard of Ireland or what we call the Wild Atlantic Way is that breathtaking, picturesque view of our island. Small towns and fishing villages dot the coastline and offer the honeymooner a great chance to kick back, unwind and spend time with each other.”

Travelers returning to the U.S. can go through Customs in Ireland! “Travel to Ireland is made easier by the fact that both Dublin and Shannon airports operate U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Preclearance, which means visitors will return to the U.S. as domestic passengers,” according to Moran. This makes Ireland stand out from the crowd of European honeymoon destinations.

Since Ireland is a relatively small island nation, honeymooners can plan to experience all five regions if they don't mind moving around on a two-week trip. And, while there are trains connecting many of the country's urban hubs, a private vehicle means you can best access all the charming small towns in between and not be tied to a public transit timetable. Hiring a private chauffeur is the most luxurious transport option, as couples can enjoy their surroundings without navigating narrow, unfamiliar roads.

Language: English, Gaelic Currency: Euro

When to Go: Anytime, but the summer has the best weather (though it’s the high season for tourists). Spring and fall, the so-called shoulder season, might be your best bet for an uncrowded getaway.

How to Get There: Both direct and connecting flights to Ireland are available from many major U.S. airports. Travelers can plan to land in Dublin or Shannon.

How Much Time to Spend: Plan for 10 to 14 days for a leisurely paced honeymoon that hits most of Ireland’s highlights.

Transportation: It’s easy to rent a car, though the roads are famously windy and narrow, so some couples may prefer a private chauffeur service.

Must-Pack: Raincoat, sneakers, dresses, joggers, and blouses that can transition from day to night. Layers are key, so cardigans are your best friend. Ireland is fairly laid back, but it can be nice to dress up for dinner.

Places to Stay During Your Ireland Honeymoon

From luxe cliffside dwellings to chic city hotels, Ireland boasts a variety of lodging options. There are traditionally romantic castle-like properties , modern marvels, and everything in between. Whatever type of Ireland honeymoon you envision, the Emerald Isle can deliver.

Tourism Ireland’s Ruth Moran expands, “Ireland is blessed to have an array of special accommodations…Probably the most epic Ireland honeymoon experience can be found at our castles and manor houses. Adare Manor, Cashel Palace, Dromoland Castle, and Ashford Castle, are just some of the places where you can live like a king. They offer luxury, history, and romance in equal measure and combine warm Irish hospitality with all the modern facilities that a couple might want for a perfect Irish Honeymoon.”

Courtesy of Adare Manor

Adare Manor

This five-star spot is centrally located in Country Limerick and boasts a world-class golf course to boot. Its 840 park-like acres also house a Michelin-star restaurant, pool, fitness center, cinema, boutique, and spa. Some of the activities available at Adare Manor are falconry, whiskey tasting, archery, garden tours, and fishing. This Georgian-inspired masterpiece is a convenient 20 minutes from Shannon Airport and has over 100 sumptuously appointed guest rooms.

Wicklow Head Lighthouse

This stunning 1781 lighthouse is set on the dramatic easternmost point of the Republic of Ireland. It’s dog-friendly and has a secret beach; lucky visitors might even catch seals sunning on the sand. Wicklow Head Lighthouse is a memorable, secluded, and unique accommodation idea for an Irish honeymoon. The nearest town is ten minutes away by car, so it’s extra private, and it’s not every day you get to stay in a beautiful lighthouse surrounded by the sea on three sides. Wicklow Head is also part of the Irish Landmark Trust, so honeymooners can feel good about investing in an organization dedicated to preserving old buildings.

Courtesy of Ashford Castle

Ashford Castle

The former residence of the Guinness family, Ashford Castle is the grand dame of Irish hotels. It rests on the beautiful shores of Lough Corrib in County Mayo. Besides a luxe spa (and its famously mosaiced reflection pool), the castle has 83 rooms, including a secluded Hideaway Cottage perfect for a honeymoon. Some iconic activities offered at Ashford Castle are the dog walk, hawk walk (aka falconry experience), and sunrise boat ride. Pro tip: for those who want property access without a super high price point, there’s a four-star option, too, the Lodge at Ashford Castle .

Shelbourne Hotel

Complete with an ancestry butler, this Dublin hot spot makes the perfect city escape for newlyweds. With a base in Ireland’s biggest city, couples can access tons of what the metropole, and the greater East region, have to offer. The Shelbourne has a prime location near museums, offers a slew of onsite eateries, and is a five-star Marriot property. History buffs will especially appreciate this spot, as it’s where the Constitution to make an Irish Free State was originally drafted.

Cashel Palace Hotel

This County Tipperary gem is a five-star Irish resort in the style of a Palladian home. The Cashel Palace Hotel boasts views of the famed Rock of Cashel, has 42 rooms, and is a member of the elite Relais & Chateau hotel group. Honeymooners can enjoy a couples massage at the stately spa, wander the expansive gardens, and imbibe at the Guinness Bar. Cashel stands out from the lodging crowd as the property recently opened in 2022 after a lengthy and thoughtful restoration.

Cliff at Lyons

This rural retreat perfectly blends romance and luxury with floral-clad buildings, an award-winning onsite restaurant, and a serene spa. Cliff at Lyons is a bespoke boutique hotel in the small village of Kildare, just 30 minutes from Dublin. This spot has 22 bedrooms, including multiple private cottages, ideal for a honeymooning couple.

Courtesy of Dromoland Castle

Dromoland Castle

Another iconic castle stay, Dromoland is known as Ireland’s most magical address. It’s a five-star, 500-acre estate with 97 guest rooms, including 14 suites. The hotel is located in County Clare in the stunning west of Ireland. Activities like horse and carriage rides, championship golf, and a full spa help this property stand out from the crowd. Plus, the gardens were designed by the same hand as the famed Versailles gardens. Consider a private picnic experience for a little added romance.

Ard Na Sidhe Country House

A favorite of Glenn, this property is a luxurious lakeside hideaway set on 32 pristine acres. A four-star spot, Ard Na Sidhe offers 18 guest rooms alongside onsite dining in one of the most popular destinations in all of Ireland. Killarney is the gateway to the iconic Ring of Kerry and Ireland’s first National Park, so honeymooners can explore the gorgeous green island from this homey base.

To avoid the crowds, skip the Ring of Kerry, and consider a scenic detour to drive the Ring of Beara instead; this winding coastal route receives almost 90 percent fewer travelers than its more popular neighbor to the north and is just as jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

Things to Do During Your Ireland Honeymoon

There’s so much to do and see on the Emerald Isle for honeymooners. Its offerings include sweeping natural beauty, cool festivals, historic sites, scenic drives, and more. Ruth Moran from Tourism Ireland sums it up best: "Ireland is full of bucket list activities. A visit to Dublin is not complete without making a stop at the Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College, and the famous Grafton Street. As you make your way out into the regions, I suggest visiting the Rock of Cashel, The Cliffs of Moher, the Aran islands, and the Ring Of Kerry. These iconic experiences are just some of the fabulous things to see and do on a trip to Ireland.”

Read on for our picks to perfect your honeymoon experience.

Hear Traditional Irish Music

It’s said that the Irish have more folk songs in their repertoire than anywhere else on the planet. This rich musical tradition is a significant piece of the fabric of Ireland and can’t be missed on a honeymoon to the island. Trad music is easily accessible almost anytime, anywhere, with countless local pubs showcasing Irish artists nightly. The top-selling Trad on the Prom in Galway is another very touristy but enjoyable option; it includes Irish musicians and traditional dancing.

Visit a Brewery

Not just any brewery…the one brewery to rule them all. A stop at the recently refurbished Guinness Storehouse is a must-do when visiting Ireland. There are several levels of experiences, from a classic tour to a connoisseur-level tasting to a “stoutie," simply printing a selfie in the foam on your stout. Whatever honeymooners choose is sure to delight, as a storehouse visit is a classic Irish activity.

Attend a Gaelic Football Match

Glenn loves recommending something a little different for her clients, adding, “A Gaelic football match is incredible and worth considering for something out of the box!” This Irish team sport involves 15 players on a rectangular pitch and is similar to rugby. It’s a unique activity and diverting way to spend a day on the Emerald Isle.

Check Out a Festival

Ireland is famous for its festivals, including stalwarts like St. Patrick’s Day , which is celebrated all over the country. New Year’s in Dublin is another winner and is the nation’s largest New Year’s celebration. Ireland is also the birthplace of Halloween, which is celebrated with the new Púca festival , a sexy, spooky spectacular poised to become a popular yearly event. Honeymooners could plan their getaway to coincide with a number of fun festivals year-round.

See the Cliffs

The Cliffs of Moher are one of the most popular sites in all of Ireland, and for good reason. They are awe-inspiring and offer unmatched views of the West Coast and sea from high above on a dramatic rock face. Just be sure to stay on the marked, paved pathway, which winds for roughly 11 miles hugging the stunning shores. A boat tour is another great way to see the Cliffs, as this below view is equally impressive.

Walk on "the Moon"

Ireland is also known for its eerie karst landscape in the Burren. Mostly protected as a National Park , this area is an ethereal moonscape full of natural trails, unique flora and fauna, and ancient stone structures. Located in County Clare in southwest Ireland, the Burren is a cool honeymoon stop perfect for stretching your legs on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Go for a Boat Ride

Ireland is, after all, an island nation, so it makes sense to get out on the water. Couples can charter a private yacht or boat to sail the Irish seas; sometimes hotels can help set this up, or travel advisors can guide the way. Alternatively, numerous ferries provide access to the water without the private price tag. One popular route is to ferry out to the Aran Islands from either Doolin or Galway . There are also dinner cruises from many Irish ports, which is a more old-fashioned but no less charming activity.

Can’t-miss Activity: A couples culinary experience! Ireland has become a celebrated foodie destination, so there are plenty of cooking or baking classes to enjoy all across the island. Some common options are learning to craft traditional Irish soda bread, touring a fresh market before a cooking class, foraging for seaweed along the wild west coast , or trying a cocktail class in the city. There are also tons of food tours for a less hands-on option that still lets traditional Irish cuisine shine. These culinary-focused excursions are a wonderful way to connect to the island’s culture and bring a little piece of it back home.

What to Eat During Your Ireland Honeymoon

Whether you’re on the coast or in the heartland, you’ll find delectable food all across the Emerald Isle. Moran shares, “As a small island, we have access to wonderful seafood…Ireland has enjoyed a culinary renaissance in the last number of years. From gastro pubs to farmer’s markets and from cooking schools to Michelin Star restaurants , it is now one of Europe’s top foodie destinations.”

Ichigo Ichie

A fine-dining staple in Cork, this eatery has a moody, industrial chic decor scheme. Ichigo Ichie embraces long-respected Japanese preparation techniques but combines them with local ingredients. Sushi superfans should sit in the coveted counter seats for a first-row look at the action at this one Michelin-star , omakase-style restaurant.

Sika Restaurant

Located in the dreamy Ancient East of Ireland, Sika combines Irish classics with modern methods for a delightful end result. It’s set on the third floor of the five-star, Palladian-style Powerscourt Hotel. During summer, the terrace is open for an outdoor dining option that offers extra pretty views of Sugar Loaf Mountain. This spot serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

“ Aniar ” means from the west, a clear nod to this Galway stand-out’s sourcing methods. The restaurant is known for fresh, delicate flavors and only sets the menu once the produce and catch of the day are in hand. Diners can expect a journey through the flavors of Ireland, past and present, at this exceptional establishment. It’s open Tuesday through Saturday, and honeymooners should book well in advance due to its immense popularity.

This County Waterford gem is a Middle Eastern deli by day and a cooking school and community gathering space by night. They focus on using local ingredients but adding a Mediterranean flair, with their iconic dish being “mezze,” or an appetizer platter of dips such as hummus and babaganoush. Mezze is located in the seaside enclave of Tramore, the southeastern part of Ireland.

Wild Honey Inn

As Ireland’s only Michelin-starred dining pub, Wild Honey Inn stands out from the crowd of traditional eateries. This spot is both a French-inspired restaurant and a lovingly restored 19th-century inn, complete with nine guest rooms. With a “tagline of wild food from land and sea,” Wild Honey embraces locally sourced products and transforms them into award-winning cuisine. It is set in the otherworldly landscape of the Burren, in the southwest of Ireland.

Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud

This two Michelin-starred Dublin spot is an elegant, longtime favorite set in a decked-out Georgian house. Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud has traditional French roots but focuses on elevating modern Irish cuisines to new levels. It is a classic pick for a honeymoon date night and has been serving happy guests for four decades.

Budgeting for an Ireland Honeymoon

Like any trip, a honeymoon to Ireland can vary significantly regarding overall expenditure . The major costs are transportation (both to get to the island and to get around), lodging, activities, and dining. Couples could spend anywhere from $5,000 to past $10,000 for a couple of weeks, depending on how these add up.

For those looking to avoid splurge, traveling during the off-season or low-season is an excellent way to cut costs quickly. Glenn adds, "You can easily combine something not that expensive, like Cliff at Lyons, with Adares/somewhere else pricey and even the cost out nicely. There are also many small, family-run B&Bs all around the country if a couple is on a budget [or] prefers that type of lodging or a more intimate experience overall." She expands, "Transportation is also going to be a factor; you can choose to self-drive (more flexibility/lowers cost), have a chauffeured experience (worth considering if you have the budget, want to have full flexibility over your itinerary, and don't want to worry about driving on the other side of the road), or consider an itinerary by train (most restrictive)." Travelers can also opt to do more self-guided tours, which are free (other than potential entry fees at various attractions).

How to Plan Your Magical Ireland Honeymoon

An Ireland honeymoon is the perfect romantic escape for couples looking for a cozy and beautiful getaway full of quiet corners, beautiful, secluded spots, and some of the world’s best inns and (castle) hotels.

In our opinion, Ireland is one of the most delightful countries to travel in as a couple: it’s adventurous without being too stressful, beautiful without demanding too much planning, and laid back enough that it’s easy to mix sightseeing with lazy days lounging in the countryside without feeling like you’re missing out.

And it’s not just us–our wedding photographer, who clearly hears all about the best honeymoon destinations around, chose an Ireland honeymoon several years ago and adored it!

Whether you dream of devouring a full Irish breakfast at a small country bed & breakfast or dining on award-winning cuisine at an opulent castle, and whether you’re the type of couple hoping to hike through the beautiful countryside or the type to desire nothing but an endless stream of colorful villages to peruse, an Ireland honeymoon has something to offer.

Romantic Things to Do on Your Ireland Honeymoon

Where to stay (+ gorgeous ireland honeymoon hotels), how to choose an ireland honeymoon itinerary, when to honeymoon in ireland, getting around during your honeymoon in ireland, what to pack for your ireland honeymoon, walk along the cliffs of moher..

Of course, any couple planning a honeymoon in Ireland immediately plans to visit the Cliffs of Moher: Ireland’s most famous tourist attraction is incredibly romantic–especially if you walk far enough past the visitor’s center that the crowds fade away and you can enjoy a peaceful moment alone in nature together.

Visit an Irish castle (or six).

Ireland is famous for its many castles, from abandoned ruins that have not been restored to those that have been converted into opulent luxury hotels, with plenty of options in between.

Be sure to check out at least a couple of castles during your romantic trip to Ireland–and ideally, spend at least one night in one!

Enjoy dinner & live music in a cozy pub.

Ireland is known for its many pubs where you can grab a pint of Guinness, a tasty meal, and listen to some live Irish music from a cozy booth in the corner–and any honeymoon in Ireland should definitely include plenty of evenings like that!

Release your inner child at a farm together.

Ireland is full of small farms that allow you to snap adorable photos with the animals–and yeah, it’s a bit childlike, but isn’t feeding a sheep way too much fun to miss out on?

Savor all the delicious food in Ireland.

Irish food is, hands down, some of the best comfort food around.

From hearty Irish stew and full Irish breakfasts to tasty baked goods like scones and brown bread (coated in copious amounts of Irish butter, of course), to potatoes in more forms you can imagine, exploring the food in Ireland is a fabulous way to enjoy your honeymoon with your beloved.

Go horseback riding in Ireland.

It’s hard to imagine a more romantic place for a horseback ride with your new spouse than Ireland: the Emerald Isle is home to some superb natural beauty, and traveling by horse will allow you to enjoy some quiet corners not easily accessed by car.

Our horseback ride in Ireland is easily one of the most romantic things we have done together in the country!

Wander an abandoned abbey.

Whether it’s an abbey that’s free to enter like Hore Abbey or a more official tourism attraction like Muckross Abbey in Killarney National Park, Ireland is full of absolutely beautiful, well-preserved abbeys that are no longer in use.

Most are uncrowded and have had their roofs removed, making a stunning indoor/outdoor space that is perfect for enjoying a quiet moment together (and an excellent place to snap some honeymoon photos, too!).

Kate Storm in the distance walking into Hore Abbey--this dress and tights combo is one of my go-to outfits when packing for Ireland.

Drive one of Ireland’s ring roads.

Ireland is a phenomenal place for a romantic road trip, and any of its ring roads are perfect short road trip routes.

From the famous Ring of Kerry to the offbeat Ring of Beara to our personal favorite, the fantastic Slea Head Drive, there’s a ring road for every couple’s taste in Ireland.

Watch the sunset over the sea together.

Ireland has some beautiful sunsets, and there’s nothing more romantic than cuddling up with your beloved to watch one together.

Because of Ireland’s mostly rural environment, it’s incredibly easy to find a coastal spot free of crowds to watch the sunset together–we’ve even enjoyed one at the Cliffs of Moher with only a few other people around by staying far away from the crowds of the visitor’s center.

Visit several colorful small towns in Ireland.

Exploring small, colorful Irish villages is easily one of the most fun aspects of taking an Ireland honeymoon, and there’s absolutely no shortage of options!

Kilkenney, Dingle, Kenmare, Cobh, and Doolin are some of our personal favorites, but there are literally hundreds of villages to discover, from highly touristed to incredibly offbeat.

Take a day trip to a quiet Irish island.

Whether it’s stunningly beautiful Skellig Michael, the Irish-speaking Aran Islands, the gorgeous Achill Island that is home to the tallest cliffs in Ireland, or somewhere else entirely, be sure to spend at least a small portion of your Ireland honeymoon on a small island offshore.

Stroll along the beautiful beaches.

Ireland’s beaches may be chilly, but they’re stunningly beautiful and the perfect place to enjoy a long walk hand-in-hand with your new spouse.

Be sure to stop off at several during your honeymoon in Ireland–Inch Beach, located on the Dingle Peninsula along the Wild Atlantic Way , is probably our favorite of the large ones we’ve seen.

If you’re visiting Ireland during the summer and happen to be willing to brave far colder temperatures than we are, you can even go swimming with the locals in some spots!

Kate Storm in a cream cardigan near Inch Beach Ireland at sunset--this is an incredibly romantic place to visit on your Ireland honeymoon!

Ireland’s hotels, castles, manor houses, bed & breakfasts, and cottages may just be the most romantic collection of any list of places to stay on a honeymoon anywhere.

Choosing where to stay on your Ireland honeymoon is more a matter of taste and preference than quality, as there is no shortage of romantic options.

We recommend staying in at least a couple of different places throughout your honeymoon in Ireland, including at least one bed & breakfast in the countryside (we can highly recommend Find Us Farmhouse ), and at least one castle (we can highly recommend Belleek Castle for a fabulous and fairly budget-friendly option–rates start at under 200 Euro/night!).

Here are a few more details, as well as a curated selection of a few other extremely well-reviewed and romantic properties in Ireland.

Adorable Bed & Breakfasts Perfect for Your Ireland Honeymoon

Find Us Farmhouse (Macroom) — Located in the countryside and nestled between a few farms, the Find Us Farmhouse is the most peaceful place we have stayed in Ireland and a perfect cozy getaway for your Ireland honeymoon!

In addition to the comfortable rooms and wonderful hospitality, the breakfast–and the beautiful breakfast room–were enormous highlights.

We loved staring out our bedroom window and watching the cows graze just a few feet from us, and it was definitely an experience worth having while in Ireland.

Inishross House (New Ross)  — If I had to sum up Inishross House in a word, it would be  hospitable . This is exactly the kind of B&B you come to Ireland for: everything from the colorful breakfast room to the comfortable room to the helpful and attentive couple who ran the B&B was an absolute delight.

The included breakfast was phenomenal and kept us full for most of the day!

County Wexford, where Inishross House is located, is a bit under the radar as compared to some of the more popular places to add to an itinerary when planning an Ireland honeymoon–but it ended up being one of our favorite parts of our most recent trip and we would love to go back to explore it again.

If you visit, be sure to head to Waterford to tour the Waterford Crystal Factory and pick up an absolutely stunning souvenir!

Kilkea Castle — Boasting phenomenal reviews and a perfect location between Dublin and Kilkenny, Kilkea Castle is the perfect destination for honeymooning couples looking for the classic Ireland castle hotel experience, complete with beautifully decorated rooms, stunning architecture inside and out, and an on-site spa and restaurant.

Kilkea Castles gets rave reviews for both its hospitality, its amenities, and its grounds, making this a worthy stop on any Ireland honeymoon.

Belleek Castle  — We knew we wanted to book at least one night in a castle hotel while in Ireland–and we’re so glad we chose Belleek!

The castle itself was stunning, the rooms beautiful, the afternoon tea a complete delight, and the tour of the castle a complete surprise–we definitely didn’t expect to personally handle several-centuries-old weapons on the tour, that’s for sure!

In fact, we loved Belleek Castle so much we wrote an entire post about it –suffice it to say we doubt you’d be disappointed by spending part of your honeymoon in Ireland there.

Perfect for couples looking to get away from it all in a quiet (and not too touristy) corner of the Irish countryside, Markree Castle includes an on-site restaurant and a phenomenal included breakfast.

Slieve League Cliffs in Donegal Ireland--definitely consider a stop here when planning a trip to Ireland!

One of the hardest parts of planning an Ireland honeymoon is choosing your itinerary–because the bottom line is that there’s no way to visit everywhere in Ireland on one trip (or even five).

We have a detailed Ireland road trip itinerary that we absolutely recommend for general trips, but depending on your honeymoon style, you may want to slow down a bit.

If you want a particularly relaxing and laid-back honeymoon, we recommend basing yourself in fewer places than on our suggested itinerary, but still suggest staying in 2-3 places during your trip (for a simple breakdown, one city hotel, one castle, and one countryside bed & breakfast would give you a good overview of the different types of travel Ireland has to offer).

Whatever you decide, we absolutely, 100% recommend not spending all of your nights in Dublin. While Ireland has some lovely cities, they simply don’t compare to the small villages and countryside–especially for romance.

Colorful buildings in Doolin Ireland near the Cliffs of Moher

While Ireland’s (short) summer is the undisputed high season for tourism in the country, if you’re willing to adjust your idea of what an Ireland honeymoon will look like, you’ll find you can have an incredibly romantic trip to Ireland during any season!

While you’ll definitely need to prepare for plenty of Ireland’s infamous rain showers for a spring honeymoon in Ireland, you’ll also be rewarded with some of the most beautifully green landscapes you can imagine, beautiful flowers, and far fewer crowds than during the summer.

Summer is the most popular time to visit Ireland, and for good reason: you’ll have the warmest weather and the highest chance at experiencing sunny days.

If you have your heart set on experiencing some of the most popular things to do in Ireland like visiting Blarney Castle, driving the Ring of Kerry, and touring the Guinness Factory, you’ll likely have to deal with far more crowds than you’d prefer–but even during the summer, it’s easy enough to escape the crowds in Ireland by going different places.

Of course, there’s also price to consider: unsurprisingly, summer is the most expensive time of year to visit Ireland!

View of O'Brien's Tower at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.

As the weather cools, the rain returns, and the tourists start to leave, prices in Ireland tend to start dropping… and yet, stunning fall foliage and plenty of local festivals give some absolutely compelling reasons for planning a fall honeymoon in Ireland.

Winter may be the least common time to plan an Ireland honeymoon, but if you’re willing to brave damp, gray weather, the comparatively low prices and a distinct lack of crowds can make for an incredibly romantic Ireland honeymoon.

After all, what could be more romantic than curling with a cup of tea in front of an antique fireplace with your new spouse?

Ireland doesn’t experience severely cold temperatures in the winter, and on average gets very little snow outside of the mountains, making a winter honeymoon in Ireland very doable and absolutely lovely in its own way.

Souvenir shop in Ireland selling wool sweaters. The building is stone and red. If you want to buy wool in Ireland, don't overpack when deciding what to bring to Ireland.

The absolute best way to get around the country during your honeymoon in Ireland is by car: not only will it give you and your beloved the privacy and freedom to enjoy all the romantic highlights of Ireland at your own pace, it will allow you to see more of the countryside than you would by basing yourself primarily in cities and traveling by bus or tour.

The Irish countryside is by far the most romantic part of the country (in our opinion, anyway), and holds all of the colorful villages, cozy pubs, and rolling green hills that couples tend to dream about when planning a honeymoon in Ireland.

We recommend booking a rental car through Discover Cars , which will search multiple companies to find the one with the best prices and rental terms for your dates.

Road in Ireland surrounded by trees on either side--you'll see plenty of views like this during your 10 day Ireland road trip!

Travel Insurance — We don’t ever suggest traveling without travel insurance–anything can happen, and the last thing you want is your honeymoon in Ireland to be interrupted by worrying about a crisis. We use and recommend Safety Wing for trips to Ireland.

Travel Adaptors for Ireland  — Ireland uses the same plugs that the UK does–and note that these are different from the bulk of mainland Europe. Double-check you add the right ones to your Ireland packing list!  We use these  and have never had any issues.

Warm, Beautiful Clothes — There may be no other vacation you take where you are photographed more on than your honeymoon–and you definitely want to look your best for those memories! Since this is Ireland, though, of course you’ll also want warm clothes and rain-friendly gear–we have a lot of specific suggestions in our what to pack for Ireland guide .

Kate Storm sitting on a wooden split level fence in Ireland with countryside behind her.

Extra Luggage Space — An Ireland honeymoon is the perfect time to shop for souvenirs–for the rest of your lives, you’ll be able to say, “we picked this up on our honeymoon!”. We recommend picking up one thing to eat, one (probably wool) thing to wear, and one thing to decorate your shared home together.

Blanket for the Car — A bit of an eccentric suggestion, perhaps, and not one that’s right for every couple, but there were many times during our trips to Ireland we wished for a cozy fleece blanket to wrap ourselves in to watch a sunset together!

Lakes of Killarney in Killarney National Park, Ireland, with a golden retirever playing in the water in the foreground.

That’s not the only rain gear you’ll want to have, though–definitely be sure to bring a raincoat and waterproof boots along as well (check out our Ireland packing list for more suggestions on that).

Camera  — We completely adore our  Sony a7R III , but whatever camera you’re comfortable with works–just make sure you have something with you to preserve your memories!

Comfortable Day Bag  — We currently use  Pacsafe’s sleek anti-theft backpack  and love it, but if you don’t want to shell out the cash for this trip, that’s totally understandable. Just aim for something comfortable to wear, not flashy, and medium-sized–we used a  Northface Jester backpack  for years and loved it as well.

Best Time to Visit Ireland

The greatest time to visit Ireland for a honeymoon is determined by your interests and the type of experience you seek. Ireland has a pleasant, temperate climate with little variation in temperature throughout the year. Here are the benefits and drawbacks of traveling throughout different seasons:

  • Pros: Spring is a lovely time to visit Ireland when the countryside is lush and green, and flowers are in bloom. It’s less crowded than the summer months.
  • Cons: The weather can be unpredictable, with occasional rain showers. It may still be a bit cool, so pack layers.
  • Pros: Summer is the peak tourist season, and for a good reason. The weather is generally the warmest and driest, with long daylight hours. This is an excellent time for outdoor activities and exploring.
  • Cons: It can be crowded and more expensive during this time. Be sure to book accommodations and activities well in advance.
  • Pros: Early autumn can still offer pleasant weather, and the landscapes begin to display beautiful fall colors. Crowds begin to thin out after the summer rush.
  • Cons: As autumn progresses, the weather becomes more unpredictable, and you may encounter more rain.
  • Pros: Winter in Ireland can be quite magical, especially around the holiday season. You might encounter fewer tourists, making it a more intimate experience.
  • Cons: The weather is cold, and daylight hours are shorter. Some attractions and accommodations may close for the season.

When planning your honeymoon, choose late spring or early summer (May to early June) or early fall (September). These seasons provide a good mix of pleasant weather, fewer visitors, and rich landscapes. Late spring and early summer also offer extended daylight hours for exploring and watching gorgeous sunsets. Just make sure to check the weather prediction for your precise vacation dates and pack accordingly, as Ireland’s weather may be erratic all year.

Weather in Ireland

Ireland has a moderate marine climate, which means it has mild temperatures, high humidity, and reasonably steady rainfall throughout the year. The weather in Ireland, on the other hand, maybe fairly varied and unpredictable. Here’s a quick rundown of the weather in each season:

  • Spring is a transitional period in Ireland. Temperatures typically range from 45°F to 55°F (7°C to 13°C).
  • You can expect a mix of sunny and rainy days. It’s a good idea to pack layers and rain gear.
  • Summer is the warmest season in Ireland, with temperatures ranging from 60°F to 70°F (15°C to 20°C).
  • While it’s the driest and sunniest time of year, rain can still occur. Be prepared for a mix of weather and longer daylight hours.
  • Autumn brings cooler temperatures, ranging from 50°F to 60°F (10°C to 15°C).
  • It’s a beautiful time to visit as the countryside turns shades of orange and brown. Expect occasional rain and shorter daylight hours.
  • Winters in Ireland are chilly, with temperatures ranging from 40°F to 45°F (4°C to 7°C).
  • Rain is common, and frost and even snow can occur, especially in the northern regions. Days are shorter, with less daylight.

It is crucial to remember that even within these broad seasonal trends, regional variances can be significant. Coastal places have milder temperatures, whereas inland and hilly areas might be cooler and wetter. Furthermore, the west coast is wetter than the east shore.

Prepare for varying weather conditions by packing layers, waterproof gear, and comfortable walking shoes for your honeymoon in Ireland. Check the local weather prediction for the specific places you intend to visit, as conditions might differ even within a short distance.

Is Ireland Safe for a Honeymoon?

Ireland is generally considered a safe and welcoming destination for honeymooners and tourists. However, like any travel destination, it’s essential to take certain precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:

  • Low Crime Rate: Ireland has a relatively low crime rate, particularly when it comes to violent crime. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching can occur in tourist-heavy areas, so always be aware of your surroundings and take precautions like keeping your belongings secure.
  • Traffic Safety: If you plan to rent a car and explore the countryside, familiarize yourself with Irish road rules, which differ from those in some other countries. Drive on the left-hand side of the road and exercise caution, especially on narrow and winding roads.
  • Weather Preparedness: Ireland’s weather can be unpredictable, so pack appropriate clothing for varying conditions. Be prepared for rain, especially on the west coast. Hypothermia is a potential risk if you’re not dressed warmly in cold, wet weather.
  • Emergency Services: Ireland has a reliable emergency services system. The emergency phone number is 112 or 999 for police, fire, ambulance, or any other emergency.
  • Healthcare: Ireland has a high standard of healthcare, with excellent hospitals and medical facilities. If you have specific health concerns, make sure you have travel insurance that covers medical expenses.
  • Natural Hazards: Be aware of natural hazards when hiking or exploring the countryside. Follow safety guidelines and stay informed about local conditions, especially if you plan to engage in outdoor activities.
  • COVID-19 Considerations: Stay informed about any travel restrictions or guidelines related to COVID-19, as they can change. Make sure to follow any health and safety protocols in place during your visit.
  • Respect Local Customs: While Ireland is generally welcoming, it’s essential to respect local customs and traditions. Be polite and considerate of the people you encounter.
  • Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers unforeseen events, trip cancellations, and medical emergencies to give you added peace of mind.
  • Travel Advisory: Check for any travel advisories or safety updates from your government or embassy before your trip.

In summary, Ireland is a safe and enchanting destination for a honeymoon. By exercising common-sense precautions and being aware of your surroundings, you can have a wonderful and worry-free experience exploring the country’s stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality.

The Best Honeymoon Destinations in Ireland

ireland honeymoon tour

Imagine spending your honeymoon in a legendary castle. Throughout Ireland many former citadels have opened their moats, er, doors to visitors to offer a once-in-a-lifetime romantic experience. Couples who prefer urban getaways can also find classic hotels that know how to cater to couples in love.

The best honeymoon souvenirs to take home if your wedding rings are modest: matching  claddagh (pronounced clah-dah) rings. These feature two hands around a heart that is topped by a crown. For generations, they have been used by locals as wedding bands, a tradition that continues today. The rings can be forged in any metal and some are available adorned with gemstones.

Ballyfin House

Rated one of the world's top hotels in the Condé Nast Traveler Reader's Choice Awards and a Brides magazine Editors' Pick for honeymoon happiness, the 20-room Ballyfin House is located in County Laois, about 90 minutes from Dublin.

One claim to fame: It's where Kim and Kanye fled on their honeymoon after they were unhappy with the first property they visited (and refused to pay ).

Rooms in this Relais & Chateaux property, the most lavish Regency mansion in all Ireland, are grand. They are filled with ancestral portraits and posh furnishings that include Roman mosaics, marquetry floors, Belgian chandeliers, and Italianate fireplaces.

Its demesne , an elaborately designed landscape, is a perfect backdrop for romance.Explore the 614 acres together on foot, by horse, bike, or horse-and-carriage.

The Continental cuisine gives lie to what you may have heard about Irish food. Here everything on the ever-changing menu is grown in-house or locally sourced.

Two tasting menus, one with five courses and the other eight, offer opportunities to try a variety of dishes. Couples are welcome to visit the wine cellar to choose their own bottle for dinner — and they may request to have their meal served there as well.

The Shelbourne Dublin

The Shelbourne Dublin is one of Ireland’s most celebrated and distinguished landmark hotels. Established in 1824, this grande dame, situated in the heart of Ireland's capital city, overlooks St. Stephen’s Green.

Truly Dublin’s most prestigious address, the hotel is where the Irish Constitution was drafted in 1922. To this day, the Shelbourne proudly displays the historic document.

Top-hatted doormen welcome visitors into the lobby, fragrant with floral abundance on display. The 265 guest rooms, which include 19 suites, are classically beautiful.

Make time for high tea in the Mayor’s Lounge overlooking the park and stop in for an Irish whiskey at the famous Horseshoe Bar .

The Shelbourne Dublin offers the unique services of a genealogy butler for guests hoping to reconnect with their Irish roots while here on a honeymoon. After you book hotel reservations, you can book the butler's service online.

Kilkea Castle

One of the oldest inhabited castles in Ireland, Kilkea Castle dates back to 1180 and combines history and mystical charm in an environment of timeless luxury.

The estate, which is located one hour from Dublin , includes the castle, the carriage rooms, restaurants and bars, spa, and golf club. It sits on 180 acres of lush woodland with rose-filled gardens and a serene river.

The 12 th  century castle has been fully refurnished and is a mélange of medieval décor and modern chic. There are 11 bedrooms in the castle, including the Fitzgerald Suite, which features sweeping landscape vistas.  In the courtyard, the original Carriage House and stables have been converted into 31 bedrooms, many of which feature wrought iron elements and exposed wooden beams.

Facilities include the Drawing Room, the place for afternoon tea, and the Dining Room for sumptuous meals. Areas to unwind in are the Castle Lounge, with its roaring fireplace, and The Keep, an authentic Irish pub where guests down Irish whiskey and Guinness (but rarely at the same time). For an explosive cocktail, add some Bailey's to the two and it's known as an Irish Car Bomb.

Dromoland Castle

Historic Dromoland Castle, built centuries ago, is Ireland's largest five-star resort outside of Dublin. Located in Newmarket-on-Fergus, it's the ancestral seat of the O'Briens, direct descendants of the High King Brian Boru .

For nearly five centuries the castle has welcomed royalty, politicians, celebrities, tycoons, and lovers of all ages. According to  John Lennon: The Life , the Beatle and Cynthia, his first wife, and George Harrison and his girlfriend Pattie Boyd visited Dromoland for a romantic stay in advance of the singing group's leaving for a worldwide tour without their regular female companions. Alas, their stay was brief, since they were soon tracked down by the paparazzi and left for home after one night.

Sumptuous accommodations with oversize windows and nine-foot ceilings add to Dromoland's overall feeling of spaciousness. Thanks to a recent renovation, the castle guest rooms, the Queen Anne Wing, the spa, and the dining and lounge areas have been transformed. An indoor pool has been added, and decor is enhanced by paintings by Irish contemporary artist John Brennan .

In addition to wandering the gardens and charming surroundings, you will find an 18-hole golf course, a full-service spa, and a beauty salon at the castle.

Fishing, archery, clay-pigeon shooting, mountain biking, tennis, and punting are also available to guests who require a respite from amorous pursuits. Dine at the in-house, award-winning Earl of Thomond restaurant to satisfy other appetites.

Waterford Castle

 Waterford Castle Resort

Any would-be prince and princess who have entertained the fantasy of residing in a castle can live the dream at Waterford Castle in the eponymous county in Ireland.

Waterford Castle stands on its own island (actually, the cognoscenti refer to the Castle and surrounding 300-plus acres as "the Island"), and its provenance harks back centuries.

According to history, a monastic settlement existed on the Island between the sixth and eighth centuries. Two archeological finds give it credence: A winged angel dating from the 8th century and the crude carving of a monk’s head, dating from the 6th century. The latter now is displayed prominently above the main entrance to Waterford Castle. Today the Island is a magical place that draws couples planning a holiday, a honeymoon, even a wedding.

The ivy-covered structure has the classic crenellated lines of a castle roof and features an arched wooden door and mullioned windows. (Sorry, no moat, but there are golf and tennis facilities to subdue visiting marauders.) And no trip is complete without a tour of the nearby  Waterford crystal factory (and some carefully packed souvenirs from its retail store).

Cashel House Hotel and Gardens

Cashel House

The West of Ireland, particularly around Galway, is an ideal choice for honeymoon couples and others on a romantic getaway. This county’s wild, windswept vistas and charming villages filled with cozy pubs are especially appealing. Expect to dine on fresh local seafood, listen to toe-tapping Irish music, and curl up by a peat fire at a romantic country house hotel on an Ireland honeymoon here.

The family-owned Cashel House in the heart of Connemara is one of Ireland’s most charming and romantic country houses. After a drive through the desolate, bog-covered landscape, you’ll be happy to sit with an Irish coffee beside a turf fire in one of the many parlors located throughout the house.

Have a pre-dinner drink in the bar, then enjoy dinner in the restaurant housed in a pretty conservatory. The menu is rich with local seafood such as scallops and prawns plus Connemara lamb seasoned with herbs from Cashel House's own gardens. There’s also an excellent wine list.

Couples who favor modern, design-centric hotels with a touch of whimsy are likely to find Galway's g Hotel to their liking. Ever since it opened, it’s been the most stylish and glamorous lodging in town.

Philip Treacy , previously known for creating the extraordinary headpieces (one hesitates to call them hats) for the ladies who lunch at Ascot racecourse and royal weddings, has applied his outrageous sense of design to the property.

He designed all the interiors with bold colors and vibrant patterns, especially in the public spaces. Spacious guest rooms are posh-modern, with Frette linens, power showers, butler service, and feature whimsical touches like seashell-shaped pillows and zebra-print rugs. Many overlook the waters of Lough Atalia.

Even if you don’t stay, be sure to visit for a bite to eat or a cocktail. The Grand Salon with its floor-to-ceiling windows and modern swirl mirrors is a dramatic space in which to enjoy afternoon tea or a glass of wine and late night, sip martinis and other specialty drinks in one of the two chic lounges, the Pink Bar or the Blue Bar.

Merchant Hotel

For honeymoon couples interested in scenic wonders and exploring a compact and walkable city, Belfast is the place to learn about Northern Island's history and legends and experience the charm and friendliness of the Irish people. The peace process that began in 1994 brought political stability to Belfast and the rest of Northern Ireland by 1998. Since then, tourism to the region's attractions has soared.

You can see where the legendary ship was built in the  Titanic Quarter  and even step back in time to savor Afternoon Tea as it was served on the tragic ship's inaugural journey.

A five-star hotel housed inside an exquisite Italianate building erected in 1860, the Merchant Hotel is the pinnacle of Belfast luxury. Opulent guest rooms are named after Irish poets and authors, and the house's Rolls-Royce Phantom can be booked to transport guests on Belfast city and Northern Ireland countryside tours to attractions in ultimate comfort.

Other Northern Ireland luxuries can include helicopter tours; golf at Royal Belfast, Ireland's oldest course; and cruising Belfast harbor aboard a chartered yacht.

So, you're thinking about a magical Ireland honeymoon? When it comes to top honeymoon destinations , the go-to is often a five-star, resort getaway on some remote island. And truly, there's nothing wrong with that preference—but a honeymoon in Ireland is a completely different type of getaway that works well for seasoned travelers in search of something new.

"Many of our honeymooners are taking a bucket-list trip as their honeymoon," says travel agent Denise Ambrusko-Maida of Travel Brilliant. "They are looking to dive into a more experiential destination." Ireland fits the bill since it's a romantic escape full of experiences, both quaint and adventurous.

Imagine a breakfast pint of Guinness followed by afternoon tea one day, and a sail along the Wild Atlantic Way the next afternoon. It's a fairytale-like locale, full of sprawling green space, charming Irish castle hotels and manors that boast waterfront views and rolling hills. It's a short flight across the Atlantic from New York City (about six hours), while an LA departure will require about a 10-11 hour trip. Couples have three airport options (typically Dublin, but sometimes Cork or Shannon).

It's a worthwhile getaway, regardless of where you live, if you can withstand the flight. From Cork to Northern Ireland and Galway in between, here's your guide to a romantic trip to Ireland.

Ireland Honeymoon Tips in this Article:

Best Time to Honeymoon in Ireland

Ireland honeymoon planning tips, best ireland honeymoon hotels and resorts, ireland honeymoon itinerary ideas, what to pack for an ireland honeymoon.

Deck of Card houses and cathedral in Cobh, Ireland

Summer is the most temperate time to enjoy a romantic escape to this country in Europe, not to discount spring or fall. Of the two, experts say the best time to visit is the fall. "There's something about the transition from summer into fall with those gorgeous sweaters or jumpers that can be purchased with gorgeous Irish wool," says Ambrusko-Maida. "It's a nice time to be cozy, wear a gorgeous Irish sweater and have some tea or a nice Guinness."

Best weather: May to September. Festival highlights: St. Patrick's Day in March, celebrated across the country with parades and festivities, particularly grand in Dublin. The Galway International Arts Festival in July offers arts, music, and cultural events. For literary fans , Bloomsday in June is a unique celebration of James Joyce in Dublin.

The Emerald Isle is a sight to be seen, making it one of the most romantic places in the world. The gorgeous coastline features beaches, dramatic cliffs and greenery. Honeymooners can experience sheep herding and bustling city life, complete with Dublin's legendary pub scene, all in the span of a couple of days. And unlike some honeymoon destinations, such as Australia, it's possible to see much of the country in one trip. "It's a small country," Ambrusko-Maida says. "You can get a lot done in an abbreviated time. You can see half of the country in one week."

Travel experts often plan honeymoon packages and itineraries based on a couple's experience with Ireland. First-timers will explore Dublin, Waterford, Blarney, Kerry and Galway. Some, particularly those with Irish roots, have been there before and may want to discover something new. "A lot of folks come into Dublin and focus on Dublin because it's Dublin," Ambrusko-Maida says. "Then, they'll scoot up into Northern Ireland and do Belfast, the Northern Causeway and from there go into Scotland."

Ireland is known for its, at times, chilly and windy weather, even during the summer months. Couples looking for a trip where every day is 70 and sunny may want to save Ireland for another time—average temperatures are generally below 70 degrees year-round. It also rains a good deal, so keep that in mind before buying plane tickets . That being said, there is a pretty fair trade-off: The precipitation allows the Emerald Isle to continue to live up to its name. There's also so much to do and see in Ireland, so couples who simply want to wake up in a luxury hotel, stick their toes in the sand at 11 a.m., and call it a day may not get the most out of an Irish getaway.

"It's not going to be for the people looking to have a five-star, all-inclusive, relaxing vacation," Ambrusko-Maida says. "Not that you couldn't do that, but it's missing the point…this is for people who want to be active all day."

Entry requirements: A US passport that is valid for the duration of your visit. Language: English, Gaelic. Location: Ireland is an island in the North Atlantic, separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea and St George's Channel. Currency: The currency in the Republic of Ireland is the euro (EUR), while Northern Ireland uses the pound sterling. Flight time to Destination: New York City to Dublin flights take approximately 6 to 7 hours. Getting around: Car, bus, train, bicycle, by foot.

Pro tip: Talk with a honeymoon planning expert to help plan your Irish honeymoon. You can find travel agents near you on The Knot Marketplace for top-notch travel advice and honeymoon expertise.

For honeymoon accommodations in Ireland, consider a range of options from luxurious castles to cozy bed and breakfasts or modern hotels in the city. Many properties offer special honeymoon packages including romantic extras, so be sure to keep an eye out for those while booking. You should check websites like Airbnb and VRBO , too, as they are excellent resources for finding unforgettable honeymoon stays in Ireland.

The Shelbourne

This five-star luxury hotel in Dublin is a prime spot for a high-end afternoon tea. The Shelbourne's timeless rooms are tastefully decorated with art depicting scenes from around the country. It's located within close proximity to Trinity College and overlooks the lush St. Stephen's Green—a perfect spot for those hoping to log a morning run during their Ireland vacation.

Ashford Castle

Though Ambrusko-Maida usually places her clients in bed and breakfasts, as she thinks it gives them a better taste of the Irish lifestyle, she suggests splurging on this fairytale-worthy castle hotel experience when visiting Galway. Newlyweds can also book fun activities through the hotel, like golfing or horseback riding.

5.0 Star Rating | Read Reviews

Beech Hill House

Located less than half an hour outside of Belfast, Beech Hill House is an 18th-century home that dates back to 1729. The sofas and beds inside the elegant rooms are comfortable, the service is amiable and the woodland and lake views provide a dose of serenity. There are times when this Northern Ireland spot is only available for weddings and other events, so check availability before you let your heart get set on staying there.

Drumcreehy Country House

Breakfast is a can't-miss event at Drumcreehy Country House quaint spot in County Clare. The dishes, like pancakes soaked in maple syrup and a smoked Irish salmon platter, are known for being a feast for both the eyes and taste buds. The rooms are cheerfully decorated, and the beds are made for sinking into at day's end.

Pro tip: For Ireland honeymoon accommodations that may provide you with a little more privacy or affordable prices, make sure to have a look on Airbnb or VRBO.

An Ireland honeymoon offers romantic walks through ancient ruins, stunning landscapes and vibrant cities. Visit the Cliffs of Moher for breathtaking views, explore romantic castles (like the Rock of Cashel ), enjoy historic stays, take a scenic drive along the Ring of Kerry and soak up evenings in lively pubs with traditional Irish music. Read on for more things to do on your Irish escape.

Puffins on Skellig Islands in Ireland

Do It Up in Dublin

The nation's capital is a must for any Ireland vacation, especially if it's your first time in the country. The ultimate Ireland tour leads to the top of the Guinness Factory, where St. Patrick's Day is every day. Ambrusko-Maida often tries to navigate newlyweds away from the touristy attractions, but this one tends to make the list if for no other reason than the 360-bar at the top of the factory gives unparalleled views of the city below.

"I always tell people to go early," she says. "Start your day there. It's Ireland. You can have a Guinness with your breakfast. It's okay." Of course, you can also enjoy a Guinness in any of the local pubs, where live music often provides a soundtrack with your meal. You'll also want to plan a visit to St. Patrick's Cathedral and Trinity College , where poet Oscar Wilde once studied.

Get to Galway (and Beyond)

Venture to Galway, an important stop on any Ireland honeymoon. Ambrusko-Maida suggests using Galway as a home base when taking two notable day trips. The first is a tour through the Ring of Kerry . The scenic road trip takes people over rocky terrain along the coastline and, if time permits, can include a trip to Killarney National Park and a glimpse of Lough Leane. The second, Aran Islands , takes you to a trio of islands with seven prehistoric stone forts. The most notable is the Dún Aonghasa, which archaeologists say dates back to 1100 BC.

"It's a beautiful spot to enjoy for a few days to relax," she says. "I always recommend doing a sail on the bay. We call it the Wild Atlantic Way."

When you're not sailing the Atlantic or taking in waterfront views from the land, the boisterous pub scene will keep you busy. Though Guinness is often the brew of choice in Ireland, Galway Hooker Brewery, founded in 2006, is making a name for itself for its fresh, citrusy Irish Pale Ales. Outside of the city but within County Galway lies Connemara National Park. The picturesque landscape—punctuated by mountain views—makes it a scenic place to go on a tour .

Take In Clare and the Cliffs of Moher

Clare is home to the Cliffs of Moher. The 700-foot, plunging sea cliffs make for one of the world's most romantic spots for a sunrise or sunset walk with your loved one. You can also cruise by the Cliffs of Moher with your trip to Aran Islands if you don't plan to spend much time in Clare.

Visitors won't want to leave without touring Dromoland Castle , where the old-world beauty is rivaled only by food so delicious it would impress even the stodgiest royal at the on-site restaurant Earl of Thomond. (There are many Irish castles couples can explore during their trip. Depending on where your travels take you, other chances for a royally gorgeous experience include Kilkenny Castle, Blarney Castle and Ashford Castle.)

Unearth Treasures in Waterford

Those who added fine china to their wedding registry minutes after posting engagement photos to social media will want to pay a visit to the House of Waterford Crystal . There, you can see the high-end glassware being made, enjoy afternoon tea and drop a pretty penny in the retail store. Newlyweds can also take in medieval artifacts at the Waterford Museum of Treasures.

Experience the Beauty of the Dingle Peninsula

The Dingle Peninsula tends to be less crowded than the Ring of Kerry, and it boasts breathtaking views in its own right. Star Wars fans and " set jetters " will recognize some of them from Episode VIII: The Last Jedi. The locals are known to be friendly, ready to chat vacationers up at a pub or if they ask for directions on their self-drive. The trek includes seemingly abandoned fields and remnants of houses where monks once lived. A crucifix marks the end of the peninsula in Slea Head. If you'd rather enjoy the views, a tour guide can do the driving for you and introduce you to some of the local makers and shakers.

Make Time for Belfast

Those who have experienced Ireland before often cross Belfast off their bucket lists on their honeymoons. The Northern Ireland capital was where the Titanic began its doomed voyage, and there's now a museum paying tribute to the ship and those lost at sea. The lush Botanic Gardens are a gorgeous spot for a walk, and St. Anne's Cathedral has a photogenic medieval exterior, though it was built in the early 20th century.

Pro tip: Add Ireland honeymoon experiences to your gift registry so that loved ones can give you one of these memorable couples activities. Make sure to post a few photos to your wedding website —this way your wedding guests can stay up to date with your Irish adventures.

The outside of Temple Bar in Dublin, Ireland, at night

A honeymoon in Ireland requires a lightweight rain jacket with a hood, as any day can be a rainy day. "Don't even bother with an umbrella," Ambrusko-Maida says. "It's so windy."

Since the weather can oscillate from hot to cold in a New York minute, Ambrusko-Maida suggests packing layers in your honeymoon luggage , such as cardigans, and a hefty tote or backpack for stashing when the sun is out. You'll be exploring, sometimes in muddy conditions, so Ambrusko-Maida recommends bringing comfortable shoes you don't mind getting dirty. Other must-haves for your packing checklist include sunscreen—because it's not always raining—and outlet adapters.

Though comfortable clothes will make up the most of your Irish honeymoon wardrobe, you'll want to pack some nicer clothes for more upscale dinners.

Begin in the festival capital of Ireland, Galway! As a popular holiday destination with both the Irish and international Tourists, the city’s reputation for artistic creativity is evident in every corner.  In Galway you will find a mix of traditional and modern live music concerts, street performers and an array of colourful shops and cafes. Further west the Connemara area will perhaps provide you with the first romantic getaway of your honeymoon in Ireland. This area is strewn with romantic walks which have a wild backdrop of bogland, lakes and magnificent mountains. It is here you will find Kylemore Abbey which was built by Mitchell Henry for his wife after she fell in love with Connemara on their honeymoon! Next take the short journey from Galway to Clare where your honeymoon may include romantic Burren strolls and a memorable visit to the Cliffs of Moher, Ireland’s most visited tourist attraction. Next onward to Kerry which is famous for the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula driving tours, both of which offer a different experience. The Ring of Kerry is certainly more famous but the Dingle Peninsula is every bit as beautiful. Your Irish Tourism itinerary will show you all the possible touring options whilst you are in Kerry and help you make the most of your time here in Ireland. Tour itinerary

Day 1 - galway.

ireland honeymoon tour

Due to its compact size, Galway city is easily explored on foot. The redeveloped Eyre Square area encloses a pleasant courtyard and park, nearby you will find a new shopping centre leading out to shop street which is lined both sides with a mix of cafés, restaurants, traditional and modern shops.    The city comes alive during the summer months with tourists not just from overseas but also other parts of Ireland. Sites of interest include the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, the old Spanish Arch and the Claddagh, which the famous Claddagh ring is named after. Galway city is a great place to enjoy some traditional Irish music with many pubs having live music on a weekly and in some cases a daily basis. You will also find many lovely restaurants to enjoy a romantic meal, Galway has something to suit every visitor’s taste buds and pocket!

Day 2 - Connemara

ireland honeymoon tour

Your time in Connemara may well be the highlight of your romantic getaway in Ireland! This wild region of Galway encompasses serene seascapes, rugged coastlines and magnificent mountains. Visit Kylemore Abbey which is often referred to as Ireland’s most romantic Castle as it was built by Mitchell Henry for his wife having fallen in love with the area whilst they visited on honeymoon!  Further west visit the town of Clifden with its colourful buildings, craft shops and lively pubs. Drive the breath-taking Sky road from Clifden passing desolate scenery and the narrow inlet at Clifden Bay, from here you could easily take the coastal route to the village of Roundstone. Your Irish Tourism itinerary will guide you with all the route options that you could possibly take.

Day 3 - Clare

ireland honeymoon tour

You can’t miss the Burren when travelling the coast road from Galway to Clare, and you will find Romance in every corner of it! Scramble over karst limestone formations where the bleak landscape and unusual plants give the area an other-worldly ambience. In the Southern area of the Burren the limestone rock gives way to the black shale and sandstone that form the Cliffs of Moher. The cliffs are one of Ireland’s most visited attractions offering outstanding views. Well-worn visitor walkways lead in both directions, offering various viewing points. At night we recommend spending a few hours in Doolin, which is often considered the traditional music capital of Ireland. You are surely to find a comfortable pub to soak up the lively atmosphere. On a sunny evening, join the crowds at Doolin Pier which has become famous for its stunning sunsets that somehow give the watcher a great appreciation for life and nature.

Day 4 - Clare to Kerry

ireland honeymoon tour

Bunratty Castle & Folk Park is always a nice stop to begin your day touring. Bunratty Castle was built in the 15th Century by the McNamara Clan and is widely regarded as Ireland’s best furnished Castle, complete with authentic artefacts throughout the inside. Next to the Castle, Bunratty Folk Park gives a sense of what Ireland was like in the early 19th Century with each building representing a different element of Irish life from the humblest one roomed abode, to Bunratty House an exquisite example of a fine Georgian residence. Travelling onward towards Kerry your next stop is the town of Adare where many a couple has stopped to walk beside its charming thatched cottages or paid a visit to Desmond Castle, a 13th century feudal Castle set on the banks of the River Maigue.

Day 5 - Romantic Kerry

ireland honeymoon tour

Kerry is an essential stop on any Ireland Honeymoon because of its wonderfully romantic sweeping sea views and curious history. The Dingle Peninsula and the Ring of Kerry are two of its most popular attractions. Because of the Dingle Peninsula's isolated position beside the North Atlantic Ocean there is a remarkable preservation of over 2,000 monuments.  Killarney, known as the gateway to the Ring of Kerry is famous for its lakes, recommended stops include Torc Waterfall where the Owengariff river cascades through breath-taking wooded glens and the Gap of Dunloe where Ice Age glaciers once carved a dramatic mountain pass through which the ‘gap’ offers spectacular views of three small lakes.

Day 6 - Romantic Cork

ireland honeymoon tour

Cork city is quickly gaining a reputation as one of Europe’s trendiest cites and notable city attractions include the Church of Saint Anne Shandon which from the top gives a panoramic view of the city, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral and Cork City Gaol. Cork city is noted for its ethnic restaurants, chic bars and trendy boutiques. A great starting point for your city centre explorations is Cork’s English Market. The market is located in Cork city centre with its main entrances on Grand Parade, and on Princes Street, with further smaller entrances off Oliver Plunkett Street and Patrick Street. Established in 1788 by the Protestant or ‘English’ corporation that then controlled the country, the market has been at the heart of Cork city culture since its foundation.

Day 7 - Romantic Cork - Beyond the City

ireland honeymoon tour

There are lots of things to see and do further afield from Cork City. The town of Kinsale with its attractive harbour font is always a popular stop with honeymooners because of its many romantic restaurants and bars. The town of Cobh is historic and a memorable touring stop, it was from here that the Titanic famously departed for the last time and it was also the final port of call for millions of Irish people leaving Ireland to live overseas, mainly to the US & Canada. Of course while in Cork you may wish to visit our famous Blarney Castle. Blarney Castle has been drawing honeymoon couples for centuries. Legend has it that when you kiss the Blarney Stone, you will be forever endowed with the ‘Gift of the Gab’! There is a lot to see and do in Cork and your Irish Tourism itinerary will show you all the possibilities.

Day 8 - Dromoland Castle

ireland honeymoon tour

Today we recommend setting off early in order to give you enough time to truly enjoy the luxury that surrounds Dromoland Castle. Dromoland Castle is steeped in history, its roots going back to the year 1014 when the son of Brian Boru held a fortress here. The present building was built in 1800 and was opened to guests in the early 1960’s. Dromoland Castle is certainly considered to be one of Ireland’s most luxurious castles due to the high standard imposed on every feature; from the elegant bedrooms to the perfectly landscaped grounds. The hotel has a superb spa and leisure centre that is perfect for the discerning honeymoon couple and plenty of other activities for you both to enjoy, from the onsite falconry, archery, horse-riding and fishing to their world renowned golf course.
