An Irish father and his 10-year-old son have died in a crash on holiday in Turkey just hours before they were due to fly home.

Eoin Fitzpatrick, 36, and his son Dylan were on holiday at the tourist resort of Alanya when the moped they were riding was hit by a bus.

The crash happened at 3.30pm on Monday, just hours before they were due to fly home to Portlaoise in Co Laois, Ireland.

Mr Fitzpatrick's other son, 14-year-old Cian, was with his father’s partner and her children at the time and did not witness the crash.

The 10-year-old’s mother Claire Dowling has now paid tribute to her son after arriving in Turkey to comfort Cian.

She told the Irish Mirror said she is just “glad they’re together” as she described her son as a “kind” boy who loved life.

“My smallest boy. I just hope that when it happened – I don’t know how it happened – that he was smiling,” she added. “He loves me and he loves his daddy too and I am so happy that they’re okay together somewhere.

“He was such a character and anyone who met him would have said the same. He is 10 years of age and he still holds my hand and tells me he loves me, no matter where we are. He is so, so kind.

“What breaks my heart is he was supposed to land today and I know he was dying to come home.”

Another family member told the Irish Mirror that it could be anything from a week to 10 days before the remains of Mr Fitzpatrick and his son are returned to Ireland.

Laois-based Sinn Fein TD Brian Stanley described the deaths as an “awful tragedy”, adding: “My heartfelt sympathies go to the mother of the boy and also to the parents of the deceased man and the grandparents on both sides.

“In the days and weeks ahead, the community in Portlaoise will rally around both families and hopefully be able to give them some support and comfort.”

A 28-year-old Turkish national who was believed to be driving the bus was arrested following the crash, which happened close to a pedestrian crossing on Monday afternoon, according to local media reports.

Mr Fitzpatrick and Dylan were pronounced dead after medics and police rushed to the scene.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is providing consular assistance in the case.

A broken glass window of the Imperiale Marhaba hotel is seen after a gunman opened fire at the beachside hotel in Sousse, Tunisia

A gunman disguised as a holidaymaker has killed at least 38 people, including eight Britons, in an attack on a popular tourist resort.

Terrified sunbathers ran for their lives as the attacker, dressed in shorts and hiding his Kalashnikov inside an umbrella, opened fire on the beach in Port el Kantaoui on the outskirts of Sousse, Tunisia.

He then entered the Imperial Marhaba hotel through the swimming pool area, shooting people as he went and also threw an explosive, witnesses said.

Tourists in the sea and on the sand ran and barricaded themselves in their hotel rooms after gunfire erupted, while medics used sunloungers to carry victims still in their swimming costumes.

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond confirmed at least five Britons had died and warned the number could rise.

He said a "high proportion" of the casualties were expected to be British "because of the nature of the resort".

Irish mother-of-two Lorna Carty, from Robinstown, Co Meath, was also killed. Family friends said she had taken her husband on holiday to help him recover from heart surgery.

And the nurse, who was aged in her 50s, was believed to have gone to the beach by herself when the gunman went on the rampage.

Tunisia's health ministry said British, German, Belgian and Tunisian nationals were among the dead.

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond

At least 36 people were injured in the assault, which happened just hours after a man was decapitated by an attacker brandishing Islamist flags at a French factory .

The US State Department said there was no evidence the atrocities were co-ordinated.

Earlier this week, Islamic State (IS) called on its supporters to increase attacks during Ramadan and "be keen on waging invasion in this eminent month and commit martyrdom".

The gunman in Tunisia was a young student from the city of Kairouan who was reportedly unknown to authorities. He was later shot dead by police.

Twitter accounts that support IS released three photos of someone they said was the gunman.

Speaking about how the country's worst attack in recent history unfolded, Tunisian security official Rafik Chelli said the gunman "had a parasol (umbrella) in his hand".

"He went down to put it in the sand and then he took out his Kalashnikov and began shooting wildly."

A photo has emerged of a dead man wearing black shorts, face down in the street with an automatic weapon next to him and surrounded by police.

The interior ministry had previously said two attackers were involved, including one who had fled the scene.

Local radio said police captured a second gunman, but officials did not confirm the arrest or his role in the attack.

British tourists have been describing what happened . Gary Pine said: "We thought fire crackers were going off but you could see quite quickly what was going on.

"There was a mass exodus off the beach. My son was in the sea at the time and myself and my wife were shouting at him to get out and as he ran up he said I’ve just saw someone get shot.

Holidaymaker Susan Ricketts said: "It sounded like a machine gun going off. There are people crying and going hysterical. We just came up to our room."

Another tourist John Yeoman, who barricaded himself inside his hotel room using a bed and chair, said: "People are running around the hotel. No-one has really been told what to do."

Prime Minister David Cameron said: "The people who do this do it in the name of a twisted perverted ideology."

TUNISIA-ARMY-SHOOTING

A British embassy crisis team is being sent to Tunisia after a COBRA meeting took place to co-ordinate a response.

Travel companies have offered tourists the chance to change their holiday bookings to Tunisia in light of the attack.

Thomas Cook said customers due to travel between Friday and Sunday can cancel their holidays free of charge, while those flying out from Monday up to July 24 can amend bookings for holidays to Tunisia free of charge.

People booked through Monarch or Cosmos Holidays in the next seven days can also choose not to travel and instead change their destination.

Tui, which runs Thomson and First Choice, could not confirm whether it operated tours through the hotel.

Back in March Sky's Sherine Tadros reported that the bulk of foreign fighters who have joined the ranks of IS come from Tunisia .

Meanwhile, deadly explosions have hit a Shiite mosque in Kuwait's capital after Friday prayers. Dozens of people were killed and many others wounded in the attack.

Following the day of violence, British police are putting extra security measures in place for events this weekend, including Armed Forces Day and Pride London.

British tourist, 26, dies after partner ‘stabbed her 41 times with screwdriver in hotel room’ while on Turkey holiday

15 November 2023, 18:01 | Updated: 15 November 2023, 18:03

The woman was reportedly found at the Ulubat Castle Hotel in Istanbul's Fatih Mevlanakapı district.

By Jenny Medlicott

A British tourist has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed his partner 41 times with a screwdriver while on holiday in Turkey.

Listen to this article

The woman, 26, was found dead at about 12:30pm on Tuesday in a hotel room in Istanbul’s Fatih Mevlanakapı district, according to reports.

Staff at the Ulubat Castle Hotel reported hearing “sounds” coming from one of the rooms before they found the victim “lying in a pool of blood”.

Medical staff later arrived at the scene where the woman was pronounced dead.

Her body was discovered with lacerations across her throat and the rest of her body. Examiners concluded she was killed with a screwdriver.

Turkish police launched an investigation into her death shortly afterwards and soon located her partner, 28, who was reportedly wearing a bloodied t-shirt while trying to flee the scene in a taxi.

After his arrest, he allegedly confessed to his partner’s murder and said he threw the screwdriver used as a weapon into the hotel room toilet.

He was then “sent to prison by the court on charges of intentional murder against his wife”, local media reported.

After his arrest, the suspect was interrogated by the Homicide Bureau.

He claimed that his partner had given him drugs on the day of the attack, resulting in a row.

It was after this he repeatedly stabbed her with a screwdriver, which led to her death.

He told police he had been taking medication for “psychological disorders” and also allegedly admitted to fleeing the scene after he hid the screwdriver.

Police tracked down the suspect by contacting the driver of the taxi he fled in and asking them to drive to the nearest police station, reports claim.

He was later pictured being escorted in handcuffs away from the Istanbul Police Department.

The couple reportedly travelled from England to Istanbul on Sunday and settled into their hotel on Tuesday - the same day the woman was found dead.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

“We have not been approached for consular assistance, but our staff stand ready to support British nationals abroad 24/7,” the Foreign Office told the MailOnline.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has issued guidance to Irish holidaymakers planning to travel to Turkey this year.

Turkey is a popular holiday destination due to its budget prices and great weather, however the DFA has warned that “the threat from terrorism remains high”.

Its general advice, which it updated on January 17, is to “exercise a high degree of caution at all times”.

READ MORE: Met Éireann's 'high pressure' forecast for almost all of February but there's one major blip coming

A spokesperson said: “The threat from terrorism in Turkey remains high, with bomb attacks in major Turkish cities, including Istanbul and Ankara. Although some attacks have targeted security forces, there have also been random attacks in areas frequented by tourists.

“Terrorist attacks are, by their nature, random and indiscriminate and cannot be predicted in advance. You are advised to exercise a high degree of caution, particularly in public places that are frequented by foreigners.”

One terrorism attack in the Beyoglu area of Istanbul in November killed six people and left dozens more injured.

The DFA says the south east of the country is “particularly serious” and “should be avoided”.

They continued: “We strongly advise against all travel within 10 kilometres of the border between Turkey and Syria and to Diyarbakir city. We advise against all but essential travel to the remaining areas of provinces of Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Mardin, Şanliurfa, and Sirnak. In addition, we recommend against all but essential travel to the Siirt, Tunceli and Hakkari provinces.

“While areas popular with Irish travellers are located at a substantial distance from these regions, vigilance is also required in tourist areas in major cities. Avoid demonstrations and public gatherings, which can turn confrontational. The police will take measures such as the use of tear gas to control protesters. Stay away from military sites – taking photos of, or near, military or security installations and some public buildings, may be prohibited.”

Turkey, Mediterranean Coast, also known as the 'Turquoise' coast, Oludeniz near Fethiye

Separately, the DFA has also issued a warning about bars and nightclubs, saying some Irish citizens have been “intimidated into paying extortionate bills”.

The spokesperson said: “Violent crime against tourists in Turkey is rare but street robbery and pickpocketing are common in the major tourist areas of Istanbul. The Embassy in Ankara has also been made aware of a number of cases of tourists being intimidated into paying extortionate bills at bars and nightclubs in Istanbul. Remain vigilant when frequenting such establishments.

“There have been a number of cases of theft from apartments and cars in some of the coastal resorts, as well as in Istanbul and Ankara. Take heed of your local tour operator representative's advice, and wherever you are, take sensible precautions.”

Brit tourist killed in horror speedboat crash in Turkey after smashing into water taxi

Holidaymaker Anna Capuano, 45, was killed instantly and several more people were left seriously injured when the boat they were travelling in collided with a water taxi in Marmaris, Turkey

The Brit woman was holidaying in Marmaris, Turkey at the time of the tragedy

  • 12:59, 6 Aug 2022
  • Updated 14:39, 6 Aug 2022

Arrests have been made after a British woman was killed in a horror speedboat crash in Turkey earlier this week.

Holidaymaker Anna Capuano, 45, from Ilkeston in Derbyshire, died after the boat she was in collided with a water taxi in front of a luxury five-star resort in Marmaris on Thursday.

Her partner Peter Oxford, 39, sustained serious internal injuries and was knocked unconscious before paramedics raced him to intensive care at Ahu Hospital in the beach town.

After the crash, lifeguards took Ms Capuano, her partner and two other injured tourists ashore where they gave them emergency first aid.

But Ms Capuano couldn't be saved and her body was transported to the morgue, local reports say.

The two other Brit holidaymakers sustained only minor injuries and have now returned home.

A local tour guide has revealed how he cradled 44-year-old Anna in his arms before she died on the shore.

Mustafa Bey told MailOnline : "It's a tragedy. She died in my arms.

"It is such a terrible thing to have happened.

"There has never been an accident like this in Marmaris. Everyone is in shock and upset. It's so sad."

He explained how her partner was knocked out in the accident, and broke "six or seven ribs".

The ordeal has left her grief-stricken partner - who was in a coma after the crash - "traumatised", Mr Bey said.

Ms Capuano and Mr Oxford had only recently started a relationship and were on a seven-day getaway to the five-star Lalila Blue Hotel at the time of the tragedy.

She leaves behind two daughters, age 11 and 13, as well as her 22-year-old son.

Her ex-husband Jonathan told the website: "Anna's a nice, friendly person, and was going off to Turkey with her new partner."

Three suspects have been arrested and faced judges since the tragedy.

Among them were the speedboat rider, the watersports operator, and the person using the minibus boat, who have all been bailed pending trial, according to local media.

Other holidaymakers were left horrified and rushed to help when they saw the horror crash.

The woman's husband was also badly injured in the crash but has been stabilised in hospital, local reports say.

Another four people travelling on the water taxi were also injured.

A fellow tourist , 44, on the beach at the time of the incident, told The Sun last night: "It was an awful crash and a lot of the people who saw it were wandering around in shock.

"Some of the injured were in a terrible state and the dead lady was brought ashore in a body bag – she clearly had no chance.

"The sea was a bit chaotic with so many speedboats and para-sailing boats roaring around but no one ever expected this.

"There was a rumour that one of the drivers wasn’t concentrating and was fixing his hair when the crash happened – but the police aren’t confirming anything."

Speaking with the PA news agency, the Foreign Office said several Brits were rushed to hospital.

Horrific footage said to be of the crash has been circulating among local media outlets.

It appears to show the moment the two boats collide in water close to the shore.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office spokesperson added: “We are providing consular assistance after the death of a British woman and hospitalisation of three British nationals in Turkey, and are in contact with the local authorities.”

A BRITISH tourist has died from a heart attack moments after he jumped into the Red Sea on a sightseeing boat trip.

The 73-year-old man was with a group of friends in Marmaris, Turkey when he went to cool off in the water and was unable to get back on board as his horrified friends watched as he struggled.

A Brit has died of a heart attack in Turkey after jumping off a boat into the sea

Those on the boat quickly called the emergency services yesterday as they frantically tried all they could to help their pal.

The Brit was pulled from the water by a team of coastguards, cops and divers in two separate boats.

He was rushed to shore where paramedics drastically tried to revive him but was tragically declared dead on the beach moments after he arrived.

His body was transported to the local Marmaris State Hospital morgue.

The forensic medicine institution is now looking into the shock death to determine exactly what caused his heart attack .

Medics believe he could have suffered cold water shock when he entered the water.

The shock can occur when a person faces a rapid drop in temperature as their blood vessels close up and increase blood pressure.

The water in the Red Sea is typically much colder than the 25 degree weather in Turkey at this time of year.

Emergency workers with a smashed cable car hanging above them

One killed and 184 stranded midair after cable car collapses in Turkey

Helicopters called in to rescue people after accident outside Turkish resort city of Antalya

One person has been killed, seven injured and nearly 200 stranded in midair when a pylon supporting cable cars collapsed outside the Turkish resort city of Antalya.

Helicopters equipped with night vision were called in to rescue 184 people still stranded in the cable car system’s cabins, Antalya mayor Muhittin Bocek said in a statement late on Friday.

A rescue team tries to reach the passengers of a stranded cable car.

“Our specialised teams are here. God willing, we will rescue them all in a short time,” Bocek said.

The death and injuries happened when one of the cabins in the cable car system at Sarisu-Tunektepe plunged into a rocky area as the pylon collapsed, Turkey ’s interior minister Ali Yerlikaya said.

Five people who had been in the cabin were evacuated by helicopter, while two were still waiting to be moved, he posted on X.

About 110 emergency personnel had been sent to the site of the collapse, Yerlikaya said, with more specialist mountaineers being flown in from elsewhere in Turkey.

A group of 10 opposition MPs were also headed to the scene to “investigate the accident in detail,” said Özgür Özel, chair of the opposition Republican People’s party.

Irish woman dies in Turkey during medical procedure

Mother-of-two from southeast had travelled to country for treatment in the past month.

The body of an Irish woman who died following a medical procedure in Turkey has been repatriated to Ireland with assistance from the Newry-based Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.

The woman who is understood to be a mother-of-two from the southeast region had travelled to Turkey for a medical procedure in the past month.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is “aware of the case” and is providing consular services for the family. The department declined to provide any details of the death or circumstances that brought her to Turkey.

She was one of a growing number of Irish people travelling to Turkey for medical procedures which are advertised frequently on social media as being carried out by qualified personnel, without lengthy waiting times and at a fraction of the cost of similar treatments in Ireland or other EU states.

The death follows the fatality last month of Co Louth man Tony Rogers (66) who died suddenly while having dental treatment in Turkey. Mr Rogers flew to Istanbul for an emergency procedure but died after being administered an anaesthetic at a dental clinic.

A Kevin Bell Trust spokesman confirmed it had helped in the repatriation the woman’s body “about a fortnight ago”. Her funeral took place earlier this week.

The trust was established by Colin and Eithne Bell from their Newry home in memory of their son Kevin, who died as a consequence of a car collision in New York, USA, in 2013.

‘Medical tourism’

The trust aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the bodies of loved ones who have died abroad in sudden circumstances. It has helped repatriate the bodies of more than 1,000 Irish people.

In an “update on deaths during medical tourism” the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said it was aware of “17 British nationals who have died in Turkey since January 2019, following medical tourism visits”.

The FCO said the term “medical tourism refers to those tourists who have chosen to have medical/surgical/dental treatment abroad”.

Cosmetic surgery, dental procedures and cardiac surgery are the most common procedures undertaken by people in pursuit of treatment abroad.

“The standard of medical facilities and available treatments vary widely around the world. As such, British nationals considering undertaking medical treatment in Turkey should carry out their own research; it is unwise to rely upon private companies that have a financial interest in arranging your medical treatment abroad,” warned the FCO.

Iranians flee to turkey as crackdown continues.

Peter Kenyon - Square

Peter Kenyon

In Iran, the crackdown on dissent continues long after the protests sparked by the death of a young woman in police custody. Iranians fleeing persecution at home are seeking shelter in Turkey.

ARI SHAPIRO, HOST:

In Iran, a crackdown on dissent continues long after security forces violently suppressed protests sparked by the 2022 death of a young woman in police custody. Today, many people facing the threat of imprisonment have fled the country. NPR's Peter Kenyon met three Iranians who came to Istanbul.

PETER KENYON, BYLINE: I met photojournalist Vahid Mirzaei in an apartment in Istanbul. The 32-year-old says it was a photograph he took of Iran's president, Ebrahim Raisi, that first got him in trouble. It was after floods in 2022 had devastated communities in Tehran province. And Mirzaei was on the ground documenting the damage when he heard that Raisi was on his way. He had photographed presidents before, but he says there was something different about Raisi. To him, he always seemed unsure, a little bit lost. That impression was reinforced when he saw Raisi's bodyguards physically moving him here and there.

VAHID MIRZAEI: (Through interpreter) I saw him surrounded by five or six bodyguards, and I saw several hands on him. They were guiding the president of the country this way and that, moving him like he was a puppet.

KENYON: After Mirzaei's photograph of that scene was published, he says the president's office warned him to delete the photo or face harsh consequences. Mirzaei says it happened again after the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody after being detained for not wearing the Islamic hijab to their liking. Mirzaei was taking photos at a book signing event that was also attended by journalist Nazila Maroufian, who had been arrested after she interviewed Amini's father. Mirzaei says he got the same warnings after that, telling him he wasn't allowed to take pictures of people who had been banned.

Mirzaei says, after that, he began to get death threats, and he decided to leave. For 37-year-old Shadi Asadpoor, the details were different, but the result was the same. She's a theater director, playwright and teacher. She was preparing to take her drama students to the stage around the time the protests started, but she says the theater and her career were soon shut down.

SHADI ASADPOOR: (Through interpreter) I had to suddenly leave theater - a passion that I had found all I ever wanted in life, and this made me depressed. I felt as if I had nothing else left in this life - nothing else to do, almost like a forced retirement. It was clear for me that I was going to have hard, dark days ahead of me.

KENYON: The crackdown has also swept up Iranians who took no part in the anti-government protests. Thirty-two-year-old Masha (ph) asked that her family name not be used, as she's concerned for the safety of family members still in Iran. Masha says she's never taken part in any protest, but the government drove her out of the country anyway by cutting off internet access.

MASHA: Most of my work was online, and I was making money, like, through internet. So when this protest happens, the whole internet outage literally cut it out. And I had to decide whether to lose my job or move out of the country.

KENYON: Masha says she's not sure she'll be able to stay in Turkey, but she sees no future in Iran under current conditions. Photojournalist Vahid Mirzaei says one way he tries to explain the difference he sees between Iran and the U.S. is to reflect on the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020. He says he can't imagine the trial in that case ever happening in Iran.

MIRZAEI: (Through interpreter) I'll give you an example, and that is George Floyd's devastating murder. The police officer gets arrested and sent to prison, and the one who took that video receives an award for bravery. In Iran, it's just the other way around. Whoever documents the facts goes to prison, and the one who has committed a crime and killed a human being is awarded a medal.

KENYON: He says he hopes that will change, but he's not seeing any sign of it yet.
