Spring in japan.

What is spring like in Japan? Spring highlights a new beginning in Japan, such as a new school year or the first day of work. Many people in Japan celebrate this season of renewal, which consists of cherry blossoms, blooming scenery, and exquisite festivals.

The spring season in Japan is most popularly associated with cherry blossoms (sakura). Sakura is the most renowned flower of the country, and its blooming period is arguably the most sought-after sites to see in Japan. This flourishing season also marks a sense of rebirth. Around this time, particularly in April, many employees start their new jobs and students begin a new school year. Spring is also the best time to relish in Japan's thriving gardens, where you can see tulips, azaeleas, and more. The weather is quite pleasant, but sweaters and cardigans are recommended.

Visiting Japan in March Visiting Japan in March allows travelers to see cherry blossoms only in certains parts of Japan. During this time, particularly the end of March, the peak of cherry blossoms is primarily in the southern parts of Japan. This includes Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Shikoku, Hiroshima, and Kyushu. Our tour packages take you to the most popular sites in these areas to view sakura. Other areas in Japan experience the cherry blossom season during different times in the spring, beginning in the south before moving to the northernmost part of Japan. Visiting Japan in April The graceful period of cherry blossoms continues in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Shikoku, Hiroshima, and Kyushu during early April. In mid-April, the cherry blossoms begin to bloom in the Japanese Alps area, such as Takayama, Shirakawago, and Kanazawa. Then, in mid to late April, cherry blossoms move to the Nikko and Tohoku area. Finally, Hokkaido experiences the cherry blossom season beginning in late April. Visit Japan in April to see the Miyako Odori, the Takayama Spring Festival, the Wisteria Tunnel at Kawachi Fuji Gardens, and the Great Wisteria at Ashikaga Flower Park. Visiting Japan in May There are still chances to see the last of the cherry blossoms during early May in Hokkaido, as well as the Wisteria Tunnel at Kawachi Fuji Gardens and the Great Wisteria at Ashikaga Flower Park. From early May to mid-May, visitors can see the increasingly popular Baby Blue Eye Flowers at Hitachi Seaside Park. On May 15th, tour to the elegant Aoi Festival, one of Kyoto's most famous festivals. Our Japan tour packages in May also take you to the Fuji Shibazakura Festival and the Shibazakura Festivals of Hokkaido.

Guide was excellent however took us only to the free places and the tour guidance lasted till 1300 usually and thus you are on your own to scramble to make plans for the rest of the day and figure out how to get there etc. Seems like I paid a lot of money for the minimal touring I received from Intrepid.

Premium Japan Tour

Premium Japan

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

Great itinerary to cover so many historic and significant places in Japan. But the highlight was our guide Kumiko who supported each of us as individuals and as a group. She was constantly available, pre-empted needs and skilfully guided us throughout the tour. Kumi is a standout. Above and beyond. This is our first organised tour and we thank you

Epic Japan: Speed Trains & Street Food

The itinerary needed to be more detailed, there was a lot up in the air as to what was happening each day. There wasn’t the greatest communication between the guide and the group, as to where we were meeting and such. The places we stayed were a great mix of different style of hostel and were close to most areas in the city with a few exceptions.

We are very satisfied with our tour of Japan, Steve our guide told us interesting history of Japan on a daily basis. Steve went above and beyond helping several of us with personal problems. All the tours we went on were very interesting my only regret is not having Disney Tokyo on the list of self tours and the cable cars on Mt. Fuji.

The staff at Stunning Tours was very helpful. The hotels and the included food were great. Our tour guide was very helpful in pointing out the local delicacies and unique items to purchase in each of the regions. maybe it will lower your cholesterol level if you eat some of the sushi (high in omega-3 because of fish). Their delicacies or pastries are really good, not too sweet. Japan is very clean, This kind of trait is very good to bring back home for cleanliness.

What people love about Japan Tours in Spring

Wow! What an amazing tour. Zoe is just amazing. Was so fortunate to travel in such a friendly group at such an amazing time of year with the blossoms. Loved the balance of free time and activities, with time to relax on nights in the mountains. Feel like 12 days was perfect to feel like I saw the best bits of Japan
June 2023. Take this tour and you won't regret !
It was a really great experience! Having both guided tours and lots of free time made for a nicely balanced tour where our guide, Toshimi, a very knowledgeable local, would show us parts of Japan and tell us of their significance historically and socially, and also tell us how and where to appreciate Japan during our free time. Our guide loves Japan's history and it was very interesting talking to him about Japan. He also made lots of great recommendations on places to see and eat at, and overall made the whole tour experience very convenient, fun, and informative.

In spring, the entire park is filled with beautiful flowers and plants that grow in the Netherlands such as tulips and roses. The festival is held in Yamanashi prefecture from April to May near the base of Mt. Fuji , with an amazing view of the famous mountain in the background. There are usually food stands where you can buy your favorite food and drinks while enjoying an unbeatable view.

If you take the gondola up to the terrace early in the morning you can enjoy drinking a hot cup of coffee while feeling like you are on top of the world. Up at the top there are attractions like the “cloud walk”, where you literally feel like you are walking on clouds, as well as other decks that overlook the area.

You might think it would be too cold to swim in the springtime, but that is not the case in Okinawa . Beaches throughout Okinawa open up in the springtime between March and April and are a perfect getaway from the still fairly chilly weather everywhere else in Japan. A great place to take advantage of spring beaching is Miyakojima , that is about 300km south of the main island and is home to a number of spectacular beaches such as Maehama Beach and Toguchi no Hama Beach . Ishigaki Island is another great place to enjoy in spring with beaches that are hard to beat. Yonehara Beach , Sukui Beach , and Fusaki Beach are a few of the famous ones. Okinawa is a great option if you want to be somewhere warm where you can swim in spring.

Another fun thing to do in Japan in spring is visit what is known as the strawberry kingdom, Tochigi prefecture, where as you may have guessed, strawberries are the main attraction. Although Ashikaga Flower Park might be the most famous destination in the prefecture, who wouldn’t want to go pick and eat strawberries too? Tochigi happens to be the biggest cultivator nationwide when it comes to strawberries. Some of the farms even have an all you can pick and eat activity that you can partake in! With rich nature and fertile land as well as a climate that has long sunlight hours during winter and a large temperature difference between day and night, there are various farms overflowing with strawberries throughout the prefecture.

Kanda Matsuri(festival) is a big festival that takes place at Kanda Myojin in Ochanomizu in Tokyo . This special event is known as one of the three major festivals of Tokyo and is held over the span of a week. Although this festival is held every year during the springtime in mid-April, the events of the festival change every year depending on whether the year is odd or even. On an odd numbered year, it is called “Honmatsuri”, and is held in quite an upscale and lavish way. However on an even numbered year, it is called “Kage Matsuri”, and it is shorter as well as less luxurious. Whether it’s an odd or even year, it is an amazing event to witness in the spring.

Located at the base of Mt. Mifune in Saga prefecture , Mifuneyama Rakuen is a massive garden spreading 500,000 square meters. Filled with flowers that change color from season to season, spring is one of the best times to go see this beautilful sight in Japan. During springtime, when you first make your way into the garden it’s almost hard to believe that it’s real, as all of the flowers are in bloom and make an ocean of all different colors. In this area, the sakura(cherry blossoms) bloom from late March to early April, while the Azalea usually bloom from mid April to May. The garden is right next to Takeo Onsen so you can enjoy a relaxing overnight stay if you want as well.

Cherry blossoms, or sakura, are more than just beautiful flowers in Japan; they are a symbol deeply ingrained in the nation’s culture and psyche. Historically, they represent the fragility and transience of life, a theme captured in many Japanese artworks and literature. The practice of hanami, or flower viewing, dates back centuries and remains a cherished tradition. Each year, as the Sakura blooms, it brings a wave of celebrations and reflections, making this period an ideal time for travellers to immerse themselves in the authentic cultural fabric of Japan.

For the discerning traveller, Japan offers myriad locations for cherry blossom viewing , each unique in its setting and experience. With its thousand cherry trees, Tokyo’s Ueno Park transforms into a picturesque landscape, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a private picnic amongst the cherry trees. Steeped in history, Kyoto presents a great backdrop with its temples and traditional gardens, such as Maruyama Park and the Philosopher’s Path. For a more secluded experience, Hokkaido’s cherry blossoms bloom later than the rest of Japan, offering a tranquil viewing experience in Fort Goryokaku or Moerenuma Park.

One of the most quintessential cherry blossom experiences is at Himeji Castle. The castle, also known as ‘White Heron’ due to its elegant white exterior, is surrounded by thousands of cherry trees. The contrast of the beautiful pink petals against the striking white castle creates a breathtaking and photogenic landscape, offering visitors a unique combination of natural beauty and historical grandeur. Capturing the beauty of Sakura and blooming flowers is a highlight of their visit for many travellers. For the best photographs, early morning light offers a soft glow, enhancing the delicate pink of the blossoms. Many luxury hotels offer guided photography tours, ensuring guests find those perfect, less-crowded spots. While enjoying the cherry blossoms, respecting the local etiquette is essential. This includes not picking the flowers or branches, keeping noise levels down in public parks, and following any specific guidelines set by the viewing area. Being mindful of these practices enriches your experience and helps preserve the beauty and tranquillity of these popular sites.

Tips for Planning Your Spring Visit

Spring in Japan is generally from March to May. So, timing is crucial for a spring visit to Japan, especially for cherry blossom enthusiasts. The Sakura season varies yearly and across regions, typically starting in late March in southern Japan and progressing northwards through April. The peak bloom period (when the blossoms are at their most beautiful) lasts only about a week, so careful trip planning is essential. You should consult a travel specialist to stay updated on the weather and the cherry blossom forecast and secure accommodations and experiences that align with your chosen destinations.

Timing is crucial for a spring visit to Japan.

Timing is crucial for a spring visit to Japan.

Japan offers a range of high-end accommodations, from luxury hotels in major cities to exclusive ryokans (traditional inns) in more secluded areas. Booking well in advance is recommended, especially during the cherry blossom season, as these places can fill up quickly. For transportation, Japan’s efficient public transport system is a reliable option, but for a more private and comfortable experience, consider hiring a private car or using the luxury class on the Shinkansen (bullet train). Some travel companies offer personalized travel itineraries that include private transfers, ensuring a seamless and comfortable journey throughout your stay.

Consider using the luxury class on the bullet train for a more private and comfortable experience.

Understanding and respecting local customs and etiquette is vital for an enriching travel experience in Japan. For instance, removing shoes before entering someone’s home and certain traditional establishments is customary. Dressing modestly and following specific local guidelines is important when attending festivals or visiting sacred sites. It’s also advisable to spend time beforehand to familiarise oneself with basic Japanese phrases beforehand, as locals often appreciate this gesture of respect. High-end travellers should also be aware of tipping practices – it’s not customary to tip in Japan, and doing so can sometimes be seen as rude or confusing.

GUIDE Spring in Japan A time of rebirth, with verdant greenery and perfect weather

  • Stories & Guides

Spring in Japan means verdant greenery, cherry blossom and perfect weather

As the mountain snows begin to recede and the bare trees start producing leaves, an exciting sense of tension takes over cities and towns across the country. By late March, the Japanese flock outside to reign in the season with the incoming cherry blossom.

During this period, most of Japan rests at a pleasant 12 degrees Celsius, meaning you can travel comfortably in light outerwear and sweaters. Moving into the mountains and up the northern island of Hokkaido, you'll find chillier weather, and many Hokkaido ski resorts remain open well past March.

  • Though the weather is starting to warm up, temperatures may suddenly drop. Bring a few extra layers just in case you find yourself growing cold
  • The end of April marks the beginning of Japan's “Golden Week,” a series of consecutive days off when most of the country goes on vacation. Consider planning your trip to avoid peak travel times
  • The blooming flowers produce plenty of pollen and many cases of hay fever. Those with allergies should come prepared

Cherry blossom

Cherry blossom blooms begin from the southern tip of Kyushu in late-March and gradually extend northwards through Honshu and Hokkaido into April. A deluge of pink and white descends across cities, towns, parks, and mountains, creating ample opportunity for outdoor fun and revelry. Locals gather at parks to celebrate with beer, food, and camaraderie. Bring a picnic blanket (or blue tarp, as is typical among local Japanese) and join the fun.

No matter where you are in Japan, the cherry blossom season is full of spectacular sights and immense natural beauty.

Other flowers

While cherry blossoms reign as Japan's most iconic flower, the country is also home to many other flower varieties thanks to centuries of botany and traditional arts like ikebana. Visit any Japanese garden or temple ground to view well-curated selections of flowers and plant life.

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

While many travelers may think of Switzerland or Italy when considering the best mountain views, Japan has its very own alps. Stretching across the center of the island of Honshu, hikers, and trekkers will come across awe-inspiring views, snow-capped peaks, charming villages, and scenic lakes and rivers.

The spring tour through Japan was absolutely full of wonderful photographic opportunities and great camaraderie. With only four participants we all got to know each other well and got to see the most beautiful sites. Eduardo was easy-going with good humour (and excellent music taste) and tremendous photographic experience. The accommodations were excellent and this has to be the best value Japan Cherry Blossoms tour on the market.

japan spring tour

This Japan tour was not only well organized, but also a lot of fun. We had a great group of photographers with a lot of camaraderie and humor visiting great sites, we would never have found without Eduardo’s fine insight. Highly recommended!

japan spring tour

PhotoWorldTour’s JapanSakura tour was both a highlight and a sustained happy pill. In the course of a few days, we traveled in Spanish through large parts of Japan’s most beautiful areas. Eduardo – as well as his lucky mascot Missifou – is the best tour guide I’ve had. Relaxed, funny and so democratically oriented that we called him “our glorious leader” without being the least bit ironic. We stayed in good hotels and got up before sunrise to get the best possible photos. Then a small pause before the next image sequence..etc. Collectively, we covered larger parts of central Japan in a way that we certainly wouldn’t have been able to do without his knowledge. This was fun, simply 🌹

Japan Spring Festivals

Japan celebrates Golden Week with festivals of azalea, peony and wisteria. Our journey begins deep in the mountains of Nikko and then travels across four islands of the archipelago: Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and Naoshima. Tunnels of wisteria are a highlight. Visit Tokyo, Matsue, Okayama and Takamatsu.

JAPAN SPRING FESTIVALS

Meet your Tour Leader, Graham Ross in the departure lounge at Sydney International Airport then depart on our daytime flight to Tokyo.

The Royal Park Hotel, Tokyo

The day starts with a blast at Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi prefecture to see the world’s finest collection of wisteria. The Wisteria Festival will be in full swing with tunnels, arbours, arches and bridges smothered in weeping wisteria in white, mauve and pink. We’ll admire the 140-year-old ‘Great Wisteria’, a double petalled variety which spreads 1,000 square metres. We’ll track down wisteria flavoured ice cream then head into the mountains to Nikko. Lunch will be at the Kanaya Cottage Inn when we’ll learn about its fascinating history and guests of the Hotel Kanaya. Check into the charming Nikko Kanaya, the oldest western style hotel in Japan. Dinner tonight is western-style, silver service.

Kanaya Hotel , Nikko

Another dazzling flower festival today, the fields of beautiful baby blue eyes or nemophila at Hitachi Seaside Park overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Ibaraki Prefecture. Nemophila covers Miharashi Hill, the tallest point in the park, with four million blossoms. Walk through the Seaside Park, and view the tulip display in the forest. Dinner included tonight at the Kanaya. We’ll meet in the cosy whisky bar for a pre-dinner drink.

The day will start with a special visit to the Toshogu shrine, built in 1542 to honour the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Next door is the Rinnoji Temple Garden, a charming pocket-sized teahouse garden with Japanese maples bursting into leaf and azaleas flowering on the lake edge. The natural beauty of the place, its spiritual importance and its unique architecture still casts a spell on travellers today. Giant cryptomerias over 1000 years old, overlook the turbulent waters of the Daiya River and morning mists wrap mountain views. The entire site is World Heritage listed. On the way to Tokyo, we’ll walk a little of the ‘Sacred Way’, an ancient road of Japanese Cedars, once the path from Tokyo to Toshogu Shrine. Omiya Bonsai Village and Museum will be our next stop and hopefully a chance to see a wisteria bonsai. Arrive in Tokyo and check into the Hotel New Otani with dinner included. Stroll through the lush 400 year old gardens.

New Otani Hotel , Tokyo

Incandescent colour at the Festival of Azaleas today at Shiofune Kannon Temple northwest of Tokyo. The garden surrounds an ancient 1300-year-old Buddhist temple, known as the ‘Temple of Flowers’ because of its extensive planting of 17,000 Japanese azaleas. Level pathways zigzag through the valley so you can walk through banks of colourful azaleas to reach the giant Buddha statue at the top for a beautiful bird’s eye view. Return to our hotel with the afternoon free. Meet up again for an early evening stroll around Kameido Tenjin Shrine, the best place in Tokyo to see wisterias, lit beautifully at night. Stroll beneath arbours of fragrant wisteria that were planted in the Edo period.

Nezu Shrine, established in 1705 as a Shinto shrine, is famous for its incredible 300-year-old azalea garden displaying 3,000 azalea plants of 100 species, including rare varieties such as Fuji-tsutsuji (tiny bean-size flowers), Hanaguruma (pinwheel-like flowers), and Karafune (black azalea). Then it’s all about peonies in the month-long peony festival in Tokyo’s Ueno Park at the Toshogu Peony Garden, which was opened in 1980 to commemorate friendly relations between China and Japan. Peonies are displayed fronting snow fences woven from straw in winter and shielded with brightly coloured Japanese parasols in spring – it’s a real delight! The remainder of the day is free for relaxation, shopping or to explore new areas of Tokyo.

We take a short flight to Shimane Prefecture for a taste of old Japan at Matsue, famous for its a feudal castle, one of the few remaining medieval castles built of wood from the early 1600’s. It sits on a hill with commanding views of Izumo below, we can walk to the top to enjoy the view. Walk along the canal on Shiomi Nawate, an ancient street lined with timber samurai houses. Check into Hotel Gyokusen, a Japanese ryokan with onsen. A treat tonight with a Japanese banquet dinner at the hotel.

Hotel Gyokusen, Matsue

Peony heaven today at Yushien Garden, a treasure trove of peonies in an area famous for ginseng and peonies. Located on the sparsely populated Daikonshima Island in the middle of brackish Lake Nakaumi lies this exquisite Japanese garden full of mist, maples, ponds, waterfalls and stone bridges. You’ll come across a little timber house with a collection of fish tanks in the portico. Inside its cool and the peony display is breathtaking. Wandering on, we admire the local peony growing competition with peonies as large as your face.

Next stop is the Adachi Museum of Art’s meticulous celebrated garden, awarded the best garden in Japan. Founded by Adachi Zenko in 1980 as a way of combining his passions for Japanese art, garden design and the works by Japanese painters and ceramicists. A true lover of gardens, Adachi collected each of the pines and stones himself for the six picture or ‘scroll’ gardens: the Karesansui Garden, the Garden of White Sand and Green Pine, the Moss Garden and the Pond Garden which you view from windows inside the museum. This garden crystallises the Japanese landscape – depicting its island geography, forests, bamboo glades, pine-topped mountains, rushing rivers, mountain crags and surrounding sea.

Okayama this morning by train to visit Kōraku-en, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan (along with Kenroku-en and Kairaku-en). This quintessential Japanese garden was created 300 years ago by the daimyo (domain lord) Ikeda Tsunamasa, lord of Okayama, as a symbol of the power of the Samurai. See wisteria, zig-zag bridges, mounds of azaleas, streams lined with iris and a tea plantation. With the spectacular backdrop of Okayama Castle, the garden is designed as a circuit to experience the magic of the borrowed landscape, particularly Yuishinzan Hill. The Daimo loved the peace of the rest house, Ryuten, where he went to relax and watch the water flowing below. Walk past the famous Japanese cranes that breed here. Check in to Granvia Hotel Okayama for the next four nights.

Granvia Hotel , Okoyama

It’s a short ferry trip today to Naoshima, the tiny art island in the Seto Inland Sea that is now famous for its modern art museums, architecture and sculpture. Much of Naoshima’s art was installed by the Benesse Corporation, designed by the well-known Japanese architect Tadao Ando. It’s about the coexistence of nature, architecture, art and the revitalisation of a small fishing community. Benesse House is a place where people can explore art, nature and architecture. The complex is intended to blend into the natural environment of Setonaikai National Park. Chichu Art Museum was built mostly underground, so views of the natural beauty of this setting on the Seto Inland Sea are not interrupted. Artworks by Claude Monet, James Turrell and Walter De Maria are on permanent display. Take the ferry back to Okayama.

Our coach will take us to Japan’s fourth main island of Shikoku across the Great Seto Bridge which is the longest series of double-decker bridges in the world. Our destination is the sublime Ritsurin Garden in the city of Takamatsu. Built by local feudal lords during the early Edo Period, it’s considered one of the best gardens in Japan. It’s divided into a Japanese style garden in the south and western style garden in the north; all are set in front of the wooded Mt. Shiun which serves as a wonderful background and great example of borrowed scenery. Return to Okayama with the afternoon free.

A fun day travelling by Shinkansen (Bullet train) west through Hiroshima to the southern-most island Kyushu. The famous wisteria arches await today at Kawachi Wisteria Garden, a private garden in the hills south of central Kitakyushu, famous for its spectacular planting of wisteria. Two tunnels each 100 metres long are planted with different species of wisteria, ranging from white, lilac, pink, mauve to dark purple. A viewpoint at the top of the hillside garden allows for views across the sea of wisteria and the surrounding valley. Then head to the heritage port town of Moji for lunch and a harbour walk. Return to Okayama. Farewell dinner included tonight.

Optional visit this morning to the old picturesque town of Kurashiki with its preserved canal area that dates back to the Edo Period (1603-1867), when the city served as an important rice distribution centre. The name Kurashiki translated as town of storehouses where rice was kept. Local shopping is excellent here with Japanese denim and local ‘Bizen’ ceramics in high demand. Or visit the art gallery with many famous paintings by European masters. Afternoon transfer to Okayama Airport for homeward flights.

Japanese Hot Springs

Relaxing treat - hot springs | japan travel guide.

Relaxing Treat - Hot Springs | Japan Travel Guide

Featured Experience on our Group Japan Tours vacation packages. Natural hot springs (onsen) are numerous and highly popular across Japan. Every region of the country has its share of hot springs and resort towns, which come with them. There are many types of hot springs, distinguished by the minerals dissolved in the water. Different minerals provide different health benefits, and all hot springs are supposed to have a relaxing effect on your body and mind. Hot spring baths come in many varieties, indoors and outdoors, gender separated and mixed, developed and undeveloped. Many hot spring baths belong to a ryokan , while others are public bath houses. An overnight stay at a hot spring ryokan is a highly recommended experience for any traveler or vacation in Japan.

How to Use the Hot-Springs Bath

How to Use the Hot-Springs Bath

Below is a description of the most common way of taking a bath in a hot spring or public bath in Japan. The actual rules may differ slightly between baths, but if you follow the instructions below, you should be alright most of the time. Typical layout of a small indoor hot spring bath: 1: Take off all your clothes in the changing room and place them into a basket together with your bath towel. Coin lockers for valuables are often available. 2: Japanese hot springs are enjoyed naked. Swimming suits are not allowed in most places. However, it is the custom to bring a small towel into the bathing area, with which you can enhance your privacy while outside of the water. Once you enter the bath, keep the towel out of the water. 3: Before entering the bath rinse your body with water from either a tap or the bath using a washbowl provided in the bathing area. Traditionally, just rinsing your body is considered sufficient (and many older baths do not even provide showers and soap), but particularly among younger bathers you will find an increasing number of people who insist on taking a shower before entering the bath these days. 4: Enter the bath and soak for a while. Note that the bath water can be very hot (typical temperatures are 40 to 44 Celsius degrees or 104 to 111 Fahrenheit degrees). If it feels too hot, try to enter very slowly and move as little as possible. 5: After soaking for a while, get out of the bath and wash your body with soap at a water tap, while sitting on a stool. Soap and shampoo are provided in some baths. Like in private Japanese bathrooms, make sure that no soap gets into the bath water. Tidy up your space after you finished cleaning your body. 6: Re-enter the bath and soak some more. After you finished soaking, do not rinse your body with tap water, for the hot spring water's minerals to have full effect on your body. For More information on how to enjoy a Japanese Hot-Springs , check out Japan Deluxe Tour's How to Properly use an Onsen Blog Post!

How to Enjoy Hot Springs?

How to Enjoy Hot Springs?

  Types of hot springs

There are many types of hot springs to enjoy. The conventional hot spring is a hot water bath. Depending on the hot spring, different minerals are dissolved in the water, giving it different health benefits, colors and scents. Hot spring water baths come indoors, outdoors and in many different sizes. Outdoor baths are called rotenburo . While some baths are wooden or stone tubs, others are built to resemble or are actually natural hot spring pools. Some outdoor baths are spectacularly situated in the mountains, valleys or along rivers, lake or sea shores. Besides conventional hot water tubs, a popular feature of larger baths are so called waterfalls, which comfortably massage your shoulders if you sit below them. Other bath types include sand baths, where bathers are buried in naturally heated sand, mud baths and steam rooms. Ashiyu are shallow hot spring pools for bathing just your feet. They are found in the streets of many hot spring resorts and can be used free of charge. Increasing in number are modern hot spring complexes, which offer a range of baths, massage services, saunas and sometimes conventional swimming pools, water slides, etc. In Tokyo, where there is a shortage of natural hot spring water on the surface, some new hot spring complexes are retrieving their water from a depth of more than a kilometer below sea surface.

  Onsen Ryokan

The ultimate hot spring experience is spending a night at an onsen ryokan , a Japanese style inn with hot spring baths. This is not only one of the most popular holiday activities among the Japanese, but is also highly recommended to any foreign visitor of Japan. Onsen ryokan are found in various sizes in hot spring resorts across Japan. A typical onsen ryokan visit starts with a bath before dinner. The beautifully arranged Japanese style dinner , featuring local specialties, is either served in your tatami room or in a dining hall. Many guests like to take another bath before sleeping and before breakfast in the next morning. You do not need to stay overnight at a ryokan in order to enjoy its baths. Many ryokan open their baths to the general public, typically during daytime only and against an admission fee of a few hundred yen. Besides ryokan, most hot spring resorts also have some public bath houses with hot spring water.

  Nudity and Tattoo Issues

Hot springs in Japan are enjoyed naked, even though there are a few exceptions. While a majority of baths are gender separated, some are mixed. Mixed baths are usually found in more remote areas. Furthermore, some establishments have both, gender separated and mixed sections, for example, in the case that there is just one spectacular outdoor bath, which the owner wants to make accessible to both genders. For obvious reasons, many Japanese women, especially younger ones, avoid mixed hot springs, and it is not unusual that mixed pools are almost exclusively used by men. If you do not feel comfortable naked in front of other people, you should inquire about "kashikiri" (private) baths , which are available at some ryokan. Private baths are sometimes also known as "kazokuburo" , lit. family baths. Tattoos are also a big issue when it comes to entering a public hot spring. Although hot springs in the bigger cities are loosening up their restrictions, there are still many places that will not allow those with tattoos to enter the hot springs. The alternative option, if available, would also be to use the "kashikiri" bath or "kazokuburo" mentioned earlier. This way, travelers will still be able to enjoy the hot spring water without worrying about other guests.

Onsen Stays Available on our Best-Selling Japan Tours

As a standard on all of our fully-guided Japan tours packages and holiday vacations between Tokyo & Kyoto , immerse yourself in Japanese culture with an authentic hot-spring onsen trip. Enjoy a Japanese-style hotel with a hot-spring for you to enjoy during your vacation. For guests with tattoos, some hot-springs may offer private rooms you can use during your travels. Experience a quintessential part of Japanese culture with a visit to a hot-spring in Hakone , Matsuyama , Tokyo, Kyoto, or along the way on a custom Japan tour package.

Roblox Creator Japan Tour 2024 Spring レポート

GeekOut

Japan Culture Experience Tour

最終日は、海外インフルエンサーの皆さんを寿司職人や侍体験にご招待、日本の伝統と文化の奥深さを体験していただきました!

japan spring tour
