A daytrip from Kolkata: Exploring Belpahari

“Dulung river is just by the temple, take that path,” says our driver as we trudge along a dirt road lined by old growth trees on both sides. We are on an impromptu daytrip to Belpahari, an area in the Jhargram district of West Bengal in India. The region is endowed with acres of forests, gentle hills, lakes, and waterfalls. Belpahari was the nerve-centre of Maoist guerrilla fighters for a long time. Lately peace has been restored.

Ecologically, Belpahari is a part of Chotanagpur Plateau region. It is sparsely populated and agriculture is the mainstay here. Inhabitants here often face water crises. At one point, the people here, who are largely dependent on the forest produce, started exploiting the forest so much that it became unsustainable. Now as peace is restored, I hear villages are rewarded for protecting the forest.

We take the Ispat Express from Howrah Station at 6.55 AM and reach Jhargram station at around 9.30 AM. A few taxis stand there waiting for customers like us, people who are in Jhargram for a daytrip. After negotiation we hire one Bhajahari Mahato. Time and again he assures us that he is from the region and knows the place like the back of his hands. After a breakfast of petai parotta and alu torkari from an eatery near the station, we bundle into his car and the trip begins. During the tour, we learn that he indeed is very capable.

Things to do in Belpahari

Kanakdurga temple.

Half an hour drive later, Bhajahari drops us off at the entrance of the Kanakdurga temple. It is a temple founded by King Gopinath some 500 years ago. It is situated on a hillock by the Dulung river. According to legends, at some point in time, human sacrifice was in vogue here and sacrificial blood dripping into the river was celebrated. Horrifying and grisly.

We walk on the cemented road surrounded by bottle green foliage. The canopy of the forest makes the road dark. Beyond the boundary of the temple premise, it truly is wild. A few monkeys lounge on the branches of the trees near the temple. The current Kanakdurga temple is new. The semi dilapidated old temple stands in the same premise. The visible cracks in the temple makes it very photogenic.

We hike a little distance down the slope to reach the Dulung river. The river is calm with little water but it is a sight to behold. The shore is hemmed by vegetation. There are very few tourists here so that is the best part about the experience, I guess. Later we learn that the Dulung river becomes quite fierce in the monsoon. Some riverbanks are flashflood-prone.

Chilkigarh Rajbari

Seated in our car we roll into the large, green premise of Chilkigarh Rajbari. It is a palace that is still in use by the descendants of the king. Going inside the building is not allowed but tourists are allowed to saunter in its lawn. The palace is not in an impressive condition and Bhajahari adds, “the prince of this palace hangs out with me in the same tea shop, his financial condition is not good. There is a rumour his ancestors had wasted a lot of money in alcohol.”

The presence of a lone coconut tree and a well in the lawn enhances the optics of this palace. Near the entrance there is a temple but it is locked. It also seems to be the playground for troops of monkeys. To be on the safer side it is advisable not to carry food items in hand.

After a long drive of 52 kilometres through forests of sal and mahua, we reach Kakrajhor. This is the place where the cult Bengali movie “Charmurti” was shot. It is laced by deep forests and Adivasi(santhal) villages. There is an army outpost and a “Charmurti” guest house. It is silent most of the times, unless the inhabitants of the villages start playing the madol , a type of drum that is also called tumdak. The instrument is played during special occasions within the community. There are many trails around Kakrajhor for trekkers.

We set off from Kakrajhor Charmurti point and reach this lake in a few minutes. Ketki lake is a very beautiful lake and is quite large. The lake and the ecology around it look so Himalayan to me! Small rolling mounds with green grasses encircle the lake. Beyond the grassland is deep forest. We spot butterflies and ladybirds lounging on the grass. There is pin drop silence and hardly any visitors.

Dhangikusum Falls

Once done with Ketki lake, we cross santhal villages and forests yet again. Pink, white, yellow, and red bougainvillea beautify the yards of village homes. Most of the houses, slate-roofed and asbestos-roofed, are constructed of mud. The residents hang earthen pots from their exterior walls so that pigeons can stay there.

On a plateau, we get out of the car. Towards our right is a slope strewn with rocks and boulders that leads to a waterfall. The path has uphill and downhill trajectories through the deep forest, however, some parts of it are insanely beautiful and isolated. A few temporary shacks sell handicraft items—things made from stones hand-quarried from these rocks and boulders.

There are puja items like utensils for worship rituals. Also, there are baskets, mats, coasters, and several other home utility things made of cane and jute. If you have financial capability, please consider buying some items without bargaining. Belpahari has suffered long enough. The population here has faced violence, hunger, and abject poverty. The literacy rate is very low, your INR 100 will go a long way here. In this stretch you will come across groups of kids who might ask you for money.

The hike ends at a waterfall point. In winter the waterfall and the waterbody itself is not impressive but the route to the waterfall, the hike, is worth it.

Lunch break

Since Belpahari is not a mainstream tourist place rather a forested rural area, restaurants are almost non-existent. Eateries serve ‘thali’ or a full meal of rice, daal, vegetable, a fried item, a non-vegetarian item, and mango/tomato chutney (unlike in rest of India, in Bengal region chutneys are sweet and is considered a dessert). However, the system is that you must call and place your order in advance so that they can cook and keep aside your food.

Our driver had already placed our order in the morning at an eatery he knows. We arrive there very late almost at 3 PM. The waiter serves the food on a sal leaf. I am overjoyed. It brings back childhood memories. Before plastic, thermocol and paper plates came into the market, sal leaves were a staple on which food was served in gatherings and occasions in Bengal. The taste of the food here is not that great but given the remoteness of the region it is best not to keep high expectations.

For some odd reason the ‘dishi murgi’(country chicken) looks like mutton, it is reddish in colour instead of white! The chicken might be GI tagged kadaknath chicken, but alas I do not ask.

Gadrasini Hills

It is almost 4PM and dusk has started to descend in the valley. The awning of branches and leaves blocking the sky only makes it darker. Our car rolls on the dirt road here. Visitors need to hike up to reach the hill top. From there the view of the jungle is mesmerizing. It is also a bird lover’s paradise.

It is already sunset time and we do not have time for a hike. Keeping this in mind, we drop the hiking plan and take a detour towards our next destination.

Khandarani Lake

“I am taking a shortcut,” Bhajahari announces. We see the woods have thickened around us. We are rolling on the red laterite soil, going in a zigzag motion while navigating the trees. Darkness has increased and the driver has put on his headlights. At this point I can almost hear my heartbeat. I imagine elephants coming out of the jungle and attacking us. I am keeping a sharp eye on my surrounding.

I give a sigh of relief at the first sign of the waterbody—Khandarani Lake.

Khandarani lake is a dam lake. The dam was constructed sometimes around 1996. The water helps in irrigating croplands and to provide potable water to the residents of at least 13 villages. This lake is also surrounded by forests, but unlike Ketki, there is a connecting road bridge that goes over the lake. Hence it is less remote.

The sunset strikes up silhouettes of the forest and the hills. A Traveller(the vehicle) crosses the bridge triggering a dustcloud. A local seated on a coracle boat is fishing—getting the last catch of the day. This is a place for peace. Not for tourist boating and adventure activities. If you seek calm and nature you will love this place to bits.

Tarafeni Dam

This is another dam lake, very pretty and serene. It is situated on the Tarafeni river. It is a hit with picnic-goers I hear. Unfortunately, as the day has ended, we drop this place and head directly towards Kharagpur railway station with just one pitstop.

Buying date palm jaggery

Date palm jaggery is a seasonal delicacy in the Bengal region. It is revered for its distinctive woody sweetness and aroma. In winters the sap of wild date palms is tapped by professionals called “shuli”. The sap is then boiled until the desired consistency is reached. The shulis usually migrate from different regions, construct temporary huts near the trees and does the job.

Many such shulis are doing their job here. They have put up boards announcing the availability of the jaggery in front of their huts. We walk into one such place in search of “jhola gur”(liquid jaggery) and “patali gur”(solid jaggery). Surrounding his hut are date palm trees with pots hanging from them—the sap collection method. There is a furnace with steel and aluminium pots and pans on it, a place where the sap is boiled.

We walk into his sal-leaves roofed hut, taste his samples, and buy many blocks of patali and some jhola gur. I have previously worked on a date palm jaggery article for Eater and have done some research. With whatever knowledge I have gathered, I opine the patali to be of good quality. I brought many of these to Mumbai and made nolen gurer payesh.

With notes of jaggery on our tongue, we bid adieu to Belpahari.

Some tips to sensitise people

“Give me some money I will eat biscuit,” the kids on the way to Dhangikusum waterfall spoke like parrots. Obviously, someone has taught them this sentence. I saw one privileged visitor from the city ask them in a judgemental tone “why haven’t you gone to school?” I am sure she doesn’t realise the answer isn’t so simple and I’m sure she doesn’t understand the true meaning of “privilege and the lack of it”. Do not be like this woman.

If you really want to engage with the inhabitants then please be aware of their troubled past. Understand their social, cultural, and economic stand. Sensitise yourself and speak with empathy and compassion. Unfortunately, I have heard the word santhal and adivasi often being used as derogatory terms among the “middle class” people in India. Please do not do any such thing. Their food habits can be different to yours, again respect that. They are the people of the jungle. They produce minimum pollution and their way of life is the most sustainable for the planet. It is plain impressive.

Also please do not litter the forest, particularly plastic waste. Half-lit cigarette butts can cause forest fires so please be mindful. These are peaceful places, do not bring your thumping bass here. It will disturb the forest fauna and might land you in jail.

Howrah to Jhargram – Ispat Express (2S). The seats were comfortable and there was no standing crowd in the coach.

Belpahari car – Bhajahari Mahato (+91 9609020751). 4 seater, non-AC car.

Route – Jhargram railway station – Belpahari local sightseeing – Kharagpur railway station.

Kharagpur to Howrah – Rupashi Bangla Express (2S). The seats were comfortable and no standing crowd in the coach. We booked the tickets just about three hours before the boarding the train. There are local trains that ply on this route, our initial plan was to catch one of them.

Trip to Jhargram, Belpahari, Kankrajhor

After a long Covid-induced break, we finally decided to venture out again. We wanted to start nearby, and made our arrangements for a tour to Jhargram, Belpahari and Kankrajhor. As planned, we reached the Howrah station at the dawn of March 4, 2022, exactly 2 years after our last train journey from Hampi / Badami to Hyderabad. Our train, Ispat Express, started from Howrah at 6.35 AM and took 2 hours and 15 minutes to reach Jhargram.

Our itinerary :

• Morning of Day 1 : Jhargram Rajbari/ Palace, Sabitri Temple and Tribal museum
• Afternoon of Day 1 : Chilkigarh Rajbari, Kanak Durga Temple and Dulung River
• 2nd Day : Belpahari and Kankrajhor, which included the spots – Ghagra Waterfall, Tarafeni Dam, Khandarani Lake, Gadrasini Hill, Dhangi Kusum village, Ketki Lake
• 3rd Day : Jhargram Zoo and Khowabgaon

Day 1 morning: Jhargram Rajbari, Sabitri Temple and Tribal museum

We had made our booking for the next 2 days at the Jhargram Rajbari Tourist Complex . Once we came out of the railway station, we hired a Toto and reached within 15 minutes. Although the scheduled check-in time was 12 PM, we were lucky to check-in early.

Our first destination – the Jhargram Rajbari (Palace), was just across the entrance of the Tourist Complex. One part of the Rajbari has itself been converted to a heritage hotel.

The entry to the Raj Palace is not open to all the outside visitors. Only guests staying in Rajbari Tourist Complex can buy tickets for Rs. 15 and enter the premises. Then also, they have to confine their movement within the exterior garden area (and not allowed to enter the andar-mahal , or the inner parts of the palace). The palace buildings are quite well maintained and it is the perfect spot for photo enthusiasts.

We roamed around the palace gardens for some time and then headed to the Sabitri Temple , a short walk away. It was the royal temple of the erstwhile royals of Jhargram, and till this day the locals worship goddess Durga here in a grand manner.

 Next we hired a Toto and went to the Tribal Interpretation Centre . It is located inside a Sal forest. The museum exhibits the artefacts used by the local tribes of Jungalmahal and also depicts stories of their everyday life, rituals and the oppression they faced in the past. Outside the entrance are life-size figures of tribal men and women dancing. The outside walls of the museum are also decorated beautifully by paintings depicting the tribal life and culture. The museum remain closed on Mondays. On the other days, the timing is 11 AM – 5 PM.

The Forest Department (WBFDC) has built a few cottages next door, where tourists can make booking for their stay. It would surely be a unique experience to spend a night among these huge Sal trees, with nothing but the chirping of crickets.

The Toto was waiting for us, and we came to the town-centre and had lunch at the Annapurna Restaurant . The food here was tasty and price very reasonable.

Day 1 afternoon: Chilkigarh Rajbari, Kanak Durga temple, Dulung River

Many tourists prefer a Toto ride to Chilkigarh, situated at a distance of around 15 KM, due to the cost advantage. But we thought that this Toto ride can be a torture to our backs, and decided to hire a car instead.

Surajit picked us from outside the restaurant and we reached Chilkigarh Rajbari around 2.30 PM. The buildings of the palace and temples have not at-all been maintained and they are in a dilapidated state. One of the buildings has now been converted into a Government office.

Next we moved to the Kanak Durga Mandir . From the car parking, we had to walk through a forest trail, fenced on both sides, to reach the temple. A new temple has now been constructed beside the old one, which is now in shambles. One can offer prayers in the temple only in the morning, so it was closed when we reached there. Also, beware of monkeys here.

By the side of the old temple, there is another trail that leads to the tranquil Dulung River . It was a hot sunny day, but the cool breeze here induced fresh energy. We spent some time sitting under a tree and rejuvenated ourselves.

There are a couple of more trails to different parts of the river, out of which we explored another one and then started back for Jhargram.

Day 2 : Belpahari and Kankrajhor trip

An average tourist visits only the 4 spots in this region – Ghagra Waterfalls, Tarafeni Dam, Khandarani Lake and Gadrasini Hill. But we had planned for a few more and wanted to travel till Kankrajhor. So we started early, around 8.30 AM. The ride through the State Highway was very smooth and it took us around 1 hour to reach Belpahari’s Indira Chowk.

Our first stop was at the Ghagra Waterfall . It has a picturesque landscape, where a small stream of water flows along a rocky surface. It is much more beautiful during the monsoon when the stream is in its full might. We climbed up the boulders and clicked some nice photos against the backdrop of the rocks.

A short drive from Ghagra took us to the serene Tarafeni River Barrage . The dam serves as the source of water for the neighbouring villages. We spent some time here, before going back towards Indira Chowk.

Once on the State Highway, we headed towards the Khandarani Lake . The last few minutes of the ride was a bit bumpy through the village roads. The placid water of the vast lake, bordered by forests on both sides, made us spellbound. We took a stroll along the path bordering the lake and sat down on the banks as time flew by. During the winter months, you can even spot many species of migratory birds here.

Our last stop before lunch was Gadrasini Hill . It has a steep trek and should be avoided by elderly and persons with ailments with knees and legs. The first part of the climb is over loose stones and gravels. We had to be very much cautious so that we don’t slip and fall. After about 10 minutes of trek we came to the Basudev temple, where we took rest under the cool shade. After that, it was another 20 minutes of journey, but this time the rocks were steeper and bigger.

At the top of the hill is another temple – this time of Lord Shiva. I was expecting a spectacular view from the top, but it was nothing extraordinary. There was no 360 degree view also, partly due to the obstruction by the trees and partly due to the temple. So I would suggest that you can skip climbing the hill if you are not very interested in hiking and trekking. The entry to the hill is permitted till 4 PM.

There are a couple of eateries near the base of Gadrasini Hill. One of them is the Pabitra Homestay (Contact: 81165-77330). Here the food is made-to-order and so you need to call them in advance to place your order for lunch. Many tourists go back to Belpahari Indira Chowk for lunch, but that would be wastage of time if you are planning to explore further till Kankrajhor.

After a simple lunch consisting of rice, pulses, fried potato, vegetables and egg curry, we headed for the Dhangi Kusum village. On the way, we saw villagers making ropes from Babui grass .

Near the car parking of the Dhangi Kusum village , we saw local villagers creating crafts out of stones. The price was also reasonable and we purchased a few. The attraction here is the Hudhudi Falls , which is a short walk through a rocky terrain with jungle on both sides. But the waterfall was a disappointment, as it was just a very narrow stream of water flowing over the rocks.

The Ketki Lake , a short drive away, is not a very popular destination and we were the only visitors there. But I was mesmerized by the tranquility of the place. You can spend hours here, gazing at the calm and still blue water, with lush greenery on its banks.

The landscape gradually started changing as we moved towards Kankrajhor . This road, along the border of West Bengal and Jharkhand, is undulating with small hillocks at a distance on the left and a forest on the right. From where we parked our car in Kankrajhor, we could see the burnt remnants of the forest bungalow, which bears testimony of the bloody Maoist uprising in Bengal.

That was our last stop of the day, and it was time to go back. From Kankrajhor, there are 2 routes to go back to Belpahari/ Jhargram. One is the road that we have mostly taken from Belpahari. The other one is via Chakadoba , where the road meets the State Highway. This second route is longer by around 12 KM, but we chose it due to its own natural beauty. Especially the undulating and zig-zag road till Chakadoba, with tall trees on both sides, was really fascinating.

Day 3 : Jhargram Zoo and Khowabgaon

Today was our last day in Jhargram, and the train to Kolkata was in the afternoon at 3.25 PM. So we had plans to visit the Zoo and Khowabgaon in the morning. We hired a Toto for this short trip.

The first stop was at the Zoo, located on the other side of the railway tracks. This is actually a miniature version of the zoological gardens that you would have visited in larger cities. The biggest enclosure was that of deer, due to which the zoo is popularly known as “Deer Park” among the localites. Our kids enjoyed a lot feeding leaves to the deer, and got excited to see the leopards, hyenas and jackals roaming around.

The zoo has a dense population of Sal trees, and their shade was a nice relief from the hot weather outside. We spent some time lazing around. The road outside the zoo, with the Sal trees dotted on both sides is a perfect place for clicking a portrait.

The Zoo is open on all days, except on Thursdays. Timings are 9 AM – 5 PM (November – February) / 9 AM – 6 PM (March – October).

The last spot of our trip was Khowabgaon (The village of dreams – Khowab means dream, and gaon is village). The original name of the village is Lalbazar , a small dwelling of 13 families of the Lodha tribe.

May be the best was kept aside for the end of our journey. First of all, the journey to the village itself was mind blowing, with the path flanked by Cashew trees, and a dense forest of towering Sonajhuri, Eucalyptus trees on both sides.

In Khowabgaon , every mud-house is an open canvas. The villagers have been inspired and trained by Kolkata-based Chalchitra Academy and its founder Mrinal Mandal. They painted their walls to depict their everyday life – wedding rituals, social ceremonies, children playing, women cooking, cattle grazing and many more. One of the walls depicted film-maker Satyajit Ray shooting for his epic Pather Panchali .

The villagers apply fresh mud on their huts every year during Kali Puja. After that, they decorate and paint the walls afresh. So, if you are planning to visit Jhargram, please avoid the time of Kali Puja, as the place would become lifeless that time.

Although there is an instruction for visitors to pay Rs. 500 for photography, it is not a stringent rule. You would first be guided to the village office, where the office bearer would request you to donate as per your wish. The money is used to buy the painting material and also for maintaining the village. The villagers have also setup a shop where they sell paintings and handicrafts.

From Khowabgaon, we came back to the Tourist Complex, where we had kept our luggage. We had lunch there and then headed to the railway station for our return journey.

Useful Information and Tips :

Best time to visit jhargram:.

It is better to avoid Jhargram during summer, as it gets very hot. Winter is a good time to visit, but the landscape can get barren with the trees shedding their leaves. Monsoon should be the better time, with the lush green vegetation everywhere around. Also, the rains boost the might of the waterfalls and rivers, which become more alluring that time.

Details of the Car and Toto:

We travelled with Surajit (+91- 91630-46202) in his Swift Dzire car. For the trip to Chilkigarh Rajbari and Kanak Durga Mandir, he charged us Rs. 1000. And the cost of the Belpahari-Kankrajhor trip was Rs. 3000.

For our trip to Jhargram Zoo and Khowabgaon, we travelled in Rabi Mukherjee’s (+91- 99325-41004) Toto, for which we paid him Rs. 400. For other local travel (like Tribal Interpretation Centre, Railway station etc.), we availed the Toto service of Anjan (+91-90643-71058), and his rates were also very much reasonable.

All of them were decent and well mannered, and I would surely recommend them.

Review of Jhargram Rajbari Tourist Complex :

West Bengal Tourist Development Corporation (WBTDC) has developed this tourist complex, and it consists of two halves (on either side of the road) – the Main complex and the Annex part. The Main complex houses the Reception, the Dining Hall, and a few cottages and rooms. The cottages encircle a nicely maintained pond. The sprawling complex also contains nicely manicured gardens, children’s play area and an enclosure for turkey, goose and duck.

The Annex part also has a few cottages built around a pond. But this part is open to outsiders. The pond here is used by locals for bathing and washing purposes and the play area used by local children.

We stayed in a cottage in the Main complex, which had cost us Rs. 3000 (plus GST). The room was clean and spacious. The breakfast (Poori-sabzi or bread-omelette) was complementary. The food in general was tasty, although the price was on a higher side.

Jhargram overview.

Jhargram is a district in the state of West Bengal, India. It was formed on 4 April 2017, after splitting from the Paschim Medinipur district as the 22nd district of West Bengal. The district has its headquarters at Jhargram. Jhargram is famous for its wooded beauty and topography culminating in the hill ranges of Belpahari, Kankrajhor to the north and Subarnarekha to the south. It is a favorite destination for people who love forests. The ancient temples, royal palaces, and folk tunes and rhythms make this area attractive. The West Bengal Government is planning to establish Jhargram as an independent district.

The headquarters of this Division is Jhargram which is around 15 km. away from the National Highway-6 (popularly known as Bombay Road) and is situated on the Kolkata-Bombay main line of the South-Eastern Railway. The town is also the headquarters of Jhargram sub-division. The distance of Jhargram from Kolkata is approximately 200 km.

Sarveshwar Singh, a general serving under Man Singh of Amer, established the kingdom of Jhargram in or about 1592 AD. Raja Man Singh had received the Subehdari of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa from Emperor Akbar at that time. Sarveshwar Singh was a member of the Rajput Chauhan dynasty from Fatehpur Sikri. Even today, an idol of Mal Raja is created and killed on Vijayadashami day to honor his victory against the local Mal tribal lords who were dominating the area known as Junglemahal. He defeated and routed them. As a compensation, Raja Man Singh gave Sarveshwar Singh Chauhan and his elder brother mansabdari over the entire Junglemahal region under the suzerainty and subordination of a subservient vassal state to the Mughal Emperor Akbar. His choice of the name Jhargram, which signifies a settlement encircled by thick forests, gave rise to the term “Malla Deb” for Jhargram’s kings. … The Malla Dev Royal family currently resides in Jhargram Rajbari, which is a melting pot of tradition, culture, and rich legacy. It is a building that combines Islamic and Italian architectural styles, and the family has turned roughly 10 rooms on the ground floor into a Heritage Homestay. The Palace is a lavish Italianate building constructed in 1922 CE, under the reign of Raja Narasingha Malla Dev Bahadur, and is situated in meticulously tended lawns and gardens. The Palace campus, which is so reminiscent of a regal existence, brings the past to life. The Palatial Guest House, which is a component of the Jhargram Raj Palace, has welcomed numerous dignitaries since it opened.

Visit another historical spot of Chilkigarh palace with Durga mandir, approximately 12 km from Jhargram. The Durga mandir is almost 500 years old. This place is situated on the border of Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Visit the bird sanctuary called Kendua. It is just 9kms away. It is a perfect place for all bird lovers. Local people call Kendua medicinal plant garden.

Jhargram has a mini zoo with different wild animals like snakes, bears, black rabbits, crocodiles, monkeys and deer. The zoo remains closed on Thursdays.

When discussing the best places to visit in Jhargram, the first place to mention is the Jhargram Rajbari. This Rajbari is one of the signs of the royalty of the King Maharajas of Jhargram and the architectural art of that time. Various historical stories are hidden around this palace. From Sannyasi Raja to Tintoretto's Jesus, Durgeshgarh's Guptadhan, popular Bengali movies have been shot at Jhargram Rajbari.

Chilkigarh Raj Palace

About 300 years ago, Gopinath Singh was the king of Jamboni and his capital was Chilkigah. This Chilkigarh palace and the famous Kanakdurga temple were built during the reign of King Gopinath Singh. Later, after the death of King Gopinath Singh, his son-in-law Jagannath Singh became the king of Chilkigad. It was he who announced the Dhal Rebellion against the British in 1769 from this Chilkigarh palace. Located near Dulung River, about 13 km from Jhargram city, this ancient architecture remains a witness to the history of the place.

When talking about Chilkigad Rajbari, how can you not mention Kanakdurga temple. Along with the Chilkigarh Rajbari, the Kanakdurga Temple has also carved a niche for itself as the best sightseeing spot in Jhargram. Just 14 km from Jhargram city you will reach this century old temple. This Kanakdurga temple is located in a dense forest near Dulung river. Earlier I said that this temple was built during the reign of King Gopinath Singh. Legend has it that King Gopinath Singha got a dream from Devi and built this temple. The mother idol of Kanakadurga temple is made of Ashtadhatu. King Gopinath Singha's wife gave her gold bracelet to the king to build this statue. Human sacrifice was performed in this temple during the royal period. This sacrifice continued until the blood of the sacrifice reached the waters of the Dulung River. If you want to enjoy the wonderful beauty of the deep forest along with the temple visit, you must come to the Kanakdurga temple in Chilkigarh.

Kankrahjore

Let's pass the palace and temple boundaries and enjoy the nature. The best place to visit in Jhargram is the forest, and the first name that comes to mind when talking about that forest is Kankrajhor. This Kankrajhor forest is located just 25 km from the famous Belpahari in West Midnipur. There are no trees in this forest, starting from shal, teak, mahua, cashew nuts, coffee, oranges. Although it would be wrong to say only forest. Along with this forest are the towering Amlashol hills and innumerable waterfalls flowing from those hills. It is as if nature has destroyed everything and decorated this place in a wonderful way. And in the light of the full moon that form multiplies. So to enjoy the natural form of this forest up close, come to Kankrajhodar in Jhargram on any full moon tithi.

Garhrasini Hills

We who are from South Bengal have to run to the hilly areas of North Bengal to get a view of the mountains. But our South Bengal has countless hills wrapped in green sheets. One of those hills is the horizon-spanning Gadrasini Hills. Especially in winter there is a distinct joy of enjoying the beautiful scenery of these mountains surrounded by dense forest while listening to the chirping of colorful migratory birds. Gadrasini Ashram is located at the foot of Gadrasini hill. Devotees of Lahiri Maharaj and Swami Yogananda gather in this ashram every year during Agrahayana month. This place is very attractive to the tourists as the hill, dense forest and this ashram are the best sightseeing places in Jhargram. About 46 km from Jhargram city you will reach Gadrasini Hill.

Laljal Cave

Apart from Gadrasini hill, another famous hill in Jhargram is Laljal hill. This hill is located approximately 64 km from Jhargram city. The special attraction of this hill is Laljal cave. This ancient cave can be seen after climbing 200 meters above the Laljal hill after crossing the uphill path through the deep forest. Many years ago this cave was built by cutting stones. Primitive people lived in this cave approximately five thousand years ago. But now this cave has become a habitat for wild animals. Standing in the 21st century, if you want to feel the touch of primitiveness, you must visit the Laljal cave of Jhargram at least once.

Ghagra Waterfall

Ghaghra is a famous gorge in Jhargram. The word 'Ghaghra' is derived from 'gagra', which means pitcher in the local language. This deep gorge of black rock is so named because its shape is somewhat like a pitcher. Next to this gorge is the Tarafeni Dam. All in all, a charming atmosphere has been created in this place. Just 7 km north of Belpahari you will reach this gorge.

Khandarani Dam

Khyendarani is a charming lake surrounded by three mountains. Fair of migratory birds in the vast lake. The towering Garrasini in the south, the Singlahar hills in the west, flocks of birds in the horizon, herds of wild boars and the solitude of the forest are breathtaking natural beauty of Khyandarani.

Icons let you step into worlds you’ve only ever dreamed of. Drift off in the Up house. Spend the night in the Ferrari Museum. Hang out with Kevin Hart. Today, we’re unveiling the first 11 Icons on Airbnb, with new experiences dropping around the world throughout the year.

New features for group trips

More than 80% of bookings on Airbnb are group trips, but the app wasn’t designed for groups. That’s why we’re introducing new features that make planning group trips easier than ever:

Shared wishlists

You can now easily share your wishlists with others on your trip, inviting them to add homes, write notes and vote on listings. When you share listings with others, the app creates a wishlist with these homes.

New Messages tab

A redesigned Messages tab now allows everyone on a trip to message with the host in a group thread. The simplified design consolidates all guest, host, and customer support messages in one place, making it easy to search across messages. Reactions allow guests and hosts to respond with emojis, and AI-suggested quick replies help hosts instantly answer common questions.

Trip invitations

Once you book a trip, you can invite others to join you with digital postcards of your destination, illustrated by artists from around the world. Everyone joining the trip will get all reservation details including the full address, Wi-Fi password, and check-in instructions.

Upgrades for Hosts

The 2024 Summer Release also includes upgrades for hosts based on their feedback. We’ve expanded the earnings dashboard with interactive performance charts and automated earnings reports. Our updated Listings tab gives hosts more control when creating and editing a photo tour to showcase their space. We’ve also added a simple way to quickly switch between the guest and host sides of the app.

Worldwide rollout starting today

Wednesday TigerBlog - Another NCAA Trip For Women's Water Polo

The NCAA women's water polo selections were announced Monday night. 

There are nine teams in the field, seven of whom advance directly to the main draw and two of whom will compete in a play-in game. Want to guess in what state six of those nine teams reside? 

Shockingly, the answer is "California." The other three states? 

One of them is New York, home to Wagner, who will play one of the California schools — Biola — in the play-in game. Biola is located in Los Angeles and is primarily a Division II school, one whose nickname is the Eagles.

New Jersey is obviously one of the others. Princeton earned the tournament's No. 7 seed after rolling through the College Water Polo Association, going unbeaten in the regular season and then winning the league tournament this past weekend.

More specifically, Princeton was 12-0 in the league during the regular season. The tournament? That was anything but easy.

The Tigers defeated Brown 9-7 in the semifinals in a game that was tied 7-7 late in the third quarter. Kayla Yelensky scored four times for Princeton in that game.

That advanced Princeton into the final against Michigan, where again the Tigers would find themselves tied late. This time, Princeton had to come from behind after digging a 4-1 hole, and it was still 4-3 Wolverines at the break.

Princeton went up 9-7 in the fourth quarter, only to see Michigan come back and even things at 9-9 with 1:45 left. Ava Houlahan then scored the game-winner 24 seconds later.

The moral? Winning in the postseason is never, ever easy.

Princeton's win advanced the Tigers into the NCAA field as the No. 7 seed. The first round opponent will be the only other team not from California, and that would be second-seeded Hawaii one week from Friday at 7 Eastern time.

How many players from Hawaii are on the Hawaii team? There aren't any. 

The head coach is named Maureen Cole. You owe it to yourself to check out the picture on her bio on the Hawaii webpage.

Cole's job is to convince top players to come to Oahu. How hard can that be? She has six from California, but she also has seven other countries on the team: Australia, New Zealand, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada, South Africa and Brazil. 

Princeton, who brings a record of 23-6 into the NCAA tournament, has 13 players from California, as well as three from Connecticut and one from Australia.

Princeton reached the NCAA semifinals a year ago, with a win over Cal in the quarterfinals. This trip will be the fifth in program history, with the others in 2012, 2013 and 2015.

Basically, Princeton has become a national water polo powerhouse, between the men's team and the women's team. You may recall that the men's team went 28-6 last fall, reaching the NCAA semifinals as well after taking down UC-Irvine in the quarterfinals. 

This is all a credit to several people, most notably current head coaches Derek Ellingson and Dusty Litvak and former head coach Luis Nicolao, now at Navy. What has been built in DeNunzio Pool is very, very special.

The women's tournament will be held at Cal, who is the third seed and who opens with Fresno State. The winner of that game will take on the winner of Princeton-Hawaii in the semifinals May 11, also at 7 Eastern.

The other side of the draw has No. 1 seed UCLA against the winner of the play-in game and the 4-5 game between Stanford and Southern Cal.

Hey, it just dawned on TigerBlog that today is May 1. How about that? Where does the time go? 

The Princeton women's water polo team began its season back on Jan. 26. Who was Princeton's first opponent? 

Hint - it's also the next one. The Tigers opened their season in Hawaii's pool, with a 10-6 loss. 

Now the hope is that the season doesn't end against the same opponent.
