Job in Tourism: a training ground for opinions
Di Antonio Caneva , 24 Giugno 2005
The latest issue of the magazine presented a few bizarre situations – articles on the same topics, containing contrasting considerations. An interesting writing by Adriano and Massimiliano Biella maintained the inevitability of travel agents using the web as a tool for the growth of the agency system, while on the same page a quotation from Andrea Giannetti, President of Assotravel, reminded the reader that in spite of shortening the distribution chain, the Internet has not contributed to shedding light on the pricing dynamics of air transport. The magazine also contained a coverage on olive oil, extolling the qualities of this excellent food, with particular reference to the oil from Siena, which is currently the protagonist of a culinary review developed by some of the most important restaurants in the country. The weekly survey, on the other hand, was about the proposal – made by several restaurants – to provide a specific oil list. The respondents’ reactions showed that oil is generally not perceived as a food of its own right, so that a separate, specific list will not be justified, except in a country-farm restaurant. It may seem unusual that different opinions are published in the same issue, but we do not share this view. On the contrary, we are convinced that the true value of a publication precisely lies in being open to every position, as long as it is expressed in good faith and competently. We will rather leave unshakable truths to those who only live on certainties, as we are convinced that every issue can be viewed from several angles, all to be respected and given attention Without being conceited, we like to think of Job in Tourism as a training ground for opinions, and we are the first to share this attitude, with modesty but with great conviction.

About 10,000 Hotel Workers Walk Off the Job on Labor Day Weekend
The union representing the workers, UNITE HERE, has planned a rolling strike for several days in cities like Boston, San Francisco and Seattle after contract negotiations stalled.
By Sydney Ember
About 10,000 hotel workers in cities including San Francisco, Seattle and Boston walked off the job on Sunday in an attempt to disrupt Labor Day weekend travel after their union and some of the country’s biggest hotel companies failed to come to an agreement in contract negotiations.
On Sunday morning, workers were striking at some Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton hotel properties, plus one Fairmont hotel, in eight cities across the United States: Boston; San Francisco; Seattle; San Jose, Calif.; Honolulu; Kauai, Hawaii; San Diego and Greenwich, Conn., according to UNITE HERE, the union. The workers, at 24 hotels total, included front-desk staff, housekeepers and other employees.
In a news release, UNITE HERE said that strikes had also been authorized in Baltimore; New Haven, Conn.; Oakland, Calif.; and Providence, R.I., and could begin “at any time.”
The union said the strikes were expected to last in each city for two to three days, during a long weekend when the busy summer travel season unofficially concludes.
Among the issues the union says it is fighting for are higher wages and an end to pandemic-era service and staffing cuts. During the height of the pandemic, the leisure and hospitality industry, including hotels, laid off millions of workers as it struggled under travel restrictions and a pullback in consumer spending on services. Employment in the sector has since rebounded as travel has surged back, though some hotels have continued to keep in place adjustments they made in recent years to services, such as daily housekeeping.
“We won’t accept a ‘new normal’ where hotel companies profit by cutting their offerings to guests and abandoning their commitments to workers,” Gwen Mills, international president of UNITE HERE, said in a statement, adding that many workers were not earning enough to support their families.
Michael D’Angelo, Hyatt’s head of labor relations for the Americas, said in a statement on Sunday that the company was “disappointed that UNITE HERE has chosen to strike while Hyatt remains willing to negotiate.” He said the company had contingency plans in place to mitigate the impact of the strike.
A Hilton spokesperson said that Hilton was “committed to negotiating in good faith to reach fair and reasonable agreements” and that its “hotels have contingency plans in place to ensure operations continue to run as smoothly as possible” for customers.
Representatives for Marriott did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
UNITE HERE, which has more than 250,000 members in the United States and Canada, and is the main union representing hospitality workers in many large American cities, has a history of trying to impede busy travel periods with labor actions. Last year, thousands of workers in Southern California went on strike demanding higher pay and better benefits during the Fourth of July holiday.

Mauled Dreamworld tiger handler recovering in hospital identified as Melissa Reynolds

The woman who was mauled by a tiger at Dreamworld had worked with the animals for more than a decade and had previously appeared on TV promoting the park.
Veteran handler Melissa Reynolds was attacked just an hour before the park opened to visitors on Monday morning.
Ms Reynolds, who has worked at Dreamworld for over 12 years, was walking an 180kg tiger alongside another trainer when the animal unexpectedly bit and scratched her.
The attack left the 47-year-old with serious injuries to her forearm and shoulder, including multiple deep cuts and lacerations.
Dreamworld is home to several tigers, including three five-year-olds — Khan, Javi, and Zakari — but it’s still unknown which of the tigers was involved in the attack.
Ms Reynolds, a familiar face at the park, has been featured in local publications posing with the tigers, and even appeared on Channel 9’s Today Show back in 2012.
During her appearance, she spoke fondly of her job: “It is amazing, you get the opportunity to spend time with them, feed them and play with them.”
After the attack, Ms Reynolds was rushed to the hospital, where she remains in stable condition.
Justin Payne, the acting district director of the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), praised the first responders for their quick action. “The biggest risk to the injuries Ms Reynolds sustained was the likelihood of her wounds becoming infected,” Payne explained. He added, “Thankfully, on (the paramedics’) arrival, the bleeding had been managed very well by first aid providers there at Dreamworld, which was excellent to see.”
Payne also credited Ms Reynolds’ training and the support from her colleagues at the scene.
“We believe she was well-trained, and it’s good to see that she was able to be looked after by other support staff there,” he said.

Dreamworld is providing full support to Ms. Reynolds during her recovery.
