I am so beyond happy with A Journey School! We enrolled our almost 2 year old son about 2 months ago after being at a "just okay" daycare prior. I was thrilled to find AJS. From their website and our initial walk through visit, they truly seemed too good to be true! I can assure you, it's not. It's all true! They are a large school, but they work hard to keep their ratios low (lower than required by the state). My son has 3 amazing teachers, who never stop trying to keep it fun, keep it fresh, and make the kids feel loved. They are great communicators, and always so upbeat! Everyone there is upbeat and friendly and all of the teachers seem to get along so well with each other! The kids get to do new things every single day - nature walks on their big wooded property; art projects using paint, shaving cream, found items, leaves, you name it; visits to the Bunny Garden to feed and pet the bunnies; pretend cooking in their outdoor kitchen; gardening (the kids help grow veggies and use them in the meals they cook, which by the way they employ their own CHEF and offer weekly take home meals for families); music class, drama class, yoga (I mean, come on! YOGA!!!), I could go on and on! On top of all that they coordinate all school meet ups for families to meet, monthly "parents night out", holiday/seasonal festivals, parent committees, a private Facebook group for sharing photos of the kids (every single day!), newsletters, etc. The entire school is based on the philosophy that a child thrives if everyone in their life comes together to create a community of love and shared learning. And they truly live their philosophy. I don't think I could find the peace of mind I have with AJS anywhere else. My son absolutely loves it there and so do I! Thanks AJS!! Keep up the good work!

I can't say enough good things about this school. My high energy active son recently transferred here from Montessori school. The Montessori was rigid and unwilling to work with my son. This school and it's teachers are patient and kind. They work with the child to help them improve their behaviors. My son has thrived here and I am so thankful for this school and it's teachers.

Thank you so much Amanda for your feedback and kind words! Meeting kids where they are at and supporting them to the best of our abilities is always our focus and goal.

We were SO EXCITED to find this school! Infant massage, yoga, a great campus, delicious meals from a chef... the list went on and on. Things aren't always what they seem though. Our child was there just a bit over a year and had 13 different teachers. One left during her shift and never came back, many others assured us they would be sticking around but then dropped like flies. The entire school seems to be a revolving door of staff which is never a good sign. Promises kept changing as they upped the number of kids in the rooms but continued to brag about how fantastic their ratios were. Sure they added teachers to the rooms but then teachers kept quitting and were complaining about not having proper breaks and staffing. There were ongoing requests to donate money and supplies to the classrooms - maybe it would have made sense to just increase the tuition by 10 or 20 bucks a month- I'm happy not to have to deal with this at our new daycare. Our journey ended when it became apparent that the children weren't being properly supervised and due to a safety issue we had to make a complaint to childcare licensing. The director then decided to send out updates about our complaint in emails and in Facebook posts where other staff and parents were allowed to mock the situation. Very unprofessional especially considering that the state department of licensing was in the process of citing them for lack of appropriate supervision. Licensing also helped deal with the issue of the staff not having kids regularly wash their hands (like when they came in from outside to eat meals). I feel for some of the teachers who were good but couldn't stick around. The idea behind this school is great and it would be awesome if well executed and managed.

Photo of Renae K.

We had high expectations of this school. The facilities and food program are great, and many of the teachers are awesome. However, the management was not consistent and had a lot of knee-jerk reactions to situations which affected our child's well being. They were very inconsistent with what they promised versus what was delivered. They claim to be child-led in philosophy, but the decisions made didn't seem to have the children's best interest in mind, rather, what was best for the administration and school seemed to be prioritized. Additionally, they were terrible at dealing with issues that arose with parents. Myself and several other parents I knew at the school were consistently told "well, group care isn't for everyone" or "that's why some people decide to hire a nanny" EVERY SINGLE TIME there was an issue--big or small. This led to fearing we were being told to leave the school. After leaving and seeing how other facilities operate and handle issues with parents, I am very glad we made the decision to leave.

We were absolutely thrilled to find. A Journey School. The outdoor area is amazing, the classrooms are filled with wonderful decorations, activities and ambiance. Our son has some special needs, which we talked with the school at length before we enrolled. We were told they have experience dealing with children like my son and that it wouldn't be a problem. They said we can work together to create plans and strategies to help my son exceed. But none of that happened. 20 days in and we are told that they "aren't equipped to deal with [my son]." So we are scrambling to find a new place to go. Check out the school, it is worth it, especially if you have a mainstream child. But don't believe everything you'll be told on the tour--what they deliver is far less then what we promise.

Came here on a hunch after getting a flyer for an open house in the mail...one of the best things I have ever done! Within an hour we had decided to pull our daughter out of her school and immediately enroll her at A Journey School. Daycare hours but very much an educational environment with an Reggio Emilia approach. The foundation AND flexibility we need, it is a DREAM! Christa and her staff are nothing short of magnificent! Our daughter is so excited to go to school every day, has organic, local breakfast cooked by their incredible chef, a learning and creative environment provided by her incredible teachers and plays outside no matter what the weather. There is a wonderful sense of community as parents are involved in so much of the school's activities. We are truly fortunate to be a part of that. I won't even start about the chef's take-home family dinners - AWESOME! We look forward to watching our daughter bloom as they help foster her creativity and curiosity. It feels like a second home and we are so happy she is enrolled here. Sometimes I wish I could go to school there....

Photo of Kathryn S.

We have both of our girls enrolled in this school and have been continually impressed with the level of community and care our children receive. While we love all of the highlights (the chef, the focus on outside time, the chickens, bunnies, yoga, Spanish, parents night out, etc) what really makes the school special are the caring teachers and strong community. It is a large school and our daughter was overwhelmed at first as there are just so many kids, but she has adjusted and the school has been so responsive about meeting the needs of each child. We have not experienced the staff turnover issues another commenter mentioned, and both teachers and staff have been very responsive. Both of our children love their teachers and feel connected to the school. We have been very pleased.

Photo of Nicole U.

Our daughter has been attending Journey School for about a year and I couldn't be happier. I love the outdoor focus of the school and all the fun activities that the kids are able to participate in. The teachers and staff are kind, responsive and go above and beyond to promote a sense of community. It truly is a special place!

I have a 1 year old and a 6 year old who go to daycare, both are boys. My older boy goes before and after school. I got an email from the owner of the daycare saying we needed to talk, I asked what about and she told me, through email, that my son would not be able to attend the daycare anymore after school was out for the summer. She said he had so many tantrums that they had to devote a teacher just to him and they were not staffed for that. I asked her why I had never heard of these tantrums before it got to this point and she could not answer the question. A couple weeks later, I got an email from the owner of the daycare stating my son would not be welcome back at all due to an incident a few days prior. The daycare policy says that if there is an unruly child, there would be a meeting with the teacher, director and parents to discuss what to do. If this did not help, the student would meet with a behaviorist, then if this did not help the child would be disenrolled. I was not offered either of these. The owner of the daycare decided my son would not be allowed back without any warning to me. I had no idea what was going on. I keep asking why they did not follow their policies and why I had not heard of these tantrums before, but I did not get an answer to either of these questions. All I get are lies. Every time I ask the owner of the daycare questions about anything that went on there, she lies to me. She keeps saying note after note was sent home and left in the sign in book and in various places, but no such notes were received. I have several other complaints as well. They say they keep a portfolio on each child that is updated weekly. When I asked for my boy's portfolio they could not be produced. More lies were told to me about why their portfolios were not made.

We deeply regret that DeAnna D feels like she was treated unfairly while she was with our school. We strive to communicate very clearly and utilize many different avenues to do so. Some of the ways we communicate are: Daily: 1. We use a classroom board system that not only tells families what happened in each classroom that day (activities/things eaten/sleeping times/diapering logs), but also alerts them to items missing or needed. 2. We have an online "For Parents Only" blog where the teachers post 10-30 pictures each day of the events of the day. They also photograph the classroom boards so if a parent misses a classroom board, they can still have the information from the boards at home. 3. We visit with families frequently at pick-up and drop-off. Our school is very friendly and the office is used as our staff lounge and parent reception area often. 4. Reminder boards are posted on many of the classroom doors. The names of families who have outstanding portfolio supplies have been on the classroom doors for months. 5. Finally, we have a sign-in table "Welcome Board" in the front of the school. This board is used to alert families to upcoming events, but is also used from time to time to tell families that we need something from them. We frequently post a sign that says "Not Getting the Newsletter? Not a Part of the Blog? Sign-Up Here!" so we are sure that people are receiving our electronic communications. Weekly: 1. A school newsletter goes out to all of the parents. In it, we outline all of the events at the school and also talk about things like portfolios and portfolio materials required. Quarterly: 1. We hold quarterly Parent Committee Meetings where anything can be discussed including communication, portfolios and concerns with policies. 2. We hold quarterly committee meetings. When Needed: 1. We frequently send mid-week updates to our families reminding them about things like forms needed, supplies reminders, contagious illnesses, changes in school calendar. 2. If all else fails, and all other avenues of communication have failed, we send home notes to individual families and talk to families at pick-up and drop-off. We utilized all of these avenues with DeAnna. We regret that it was not enough for her to feel informed or like a part of the school. We also regret that she obviously misread and misunderstood our handbook. It is very important to us that families know that our desire is to provide the most inclusive environment possible so long as the child is not a danger to themselves or others and as long as the parent is an active and supportive partner with us. The handbook states that we "may" put in place a behavior plan and we "may" utilize a behavior specialist, and that we "may" disenroll a child if their behavior is disruptive or dangerous to themselves or others. We begin with a meeting with the family before making any decisions regarding behavior as we are seeking a partnership with the parent. The quality of that partnership dictates our course of action. In this case, we invited DeAnna in to meet with us and we set two meeting times. She did not show up for either meeting time. She instead began an email dialogue and would not come in despite many follow-up invitations. Unless a parent provides the necessary portfolio materials, we will not have a portfolio to give them when they leave the school. Our handbook was created to outline a set of expectations about things our school can and cannot provide. When, despite all of our best efforts, an individual's needs are greater than the level of care we can provide, or when our model and philosophy are a poor fit for an individual or family, we must at that point, move to disenrollment. These occurrences are rare with only a handful of instances in my career. It is heartbreaking when this happens and we always try to give families ample notice to make alternate arrangements unless the situation dictates that immediate disenrollment is warranted. In this case, we gave DeAnna notice of disenrollment on May 6 for disenrollment on June 17. We have invited DeAnna and her family to meet with us many times since their disnrollment (and prior to her posting this review) to go over the handbook and communication systems in place and to answer any outstanding questions. As she is the sister of our office manager, we have also invited her family to attend this meeting. She has, unfortunately, declined. We always strive to serve the children entrusted to us and truly regret not only that DeAnna feels like we did not care for her family as well as we can, but that she is leaving us not understanding our reasons for our decision.

About the Provider

Description : Our philosophy is based in our belief that children are competent individuals who can construct their own meaning of their experiences. The teacher’s role is not to provide all the correct answers. Rather, the teacher provides the occasion for discovery and learning. Our approach is hands-on and multisensory. We recognize that children have a natural curiosity and a predisposition to enjoy the unexpected. Children engage in active exploration and investigation to make sense of their world. We strive to fuel children’s investigative impulses and encourage discovery, promote questioning and challenging of ideas, and formulate connections of experience. We respect children’s multiple ways of demonstrating their intelligence. Children are encouraged to develop their individual strengths and each child’s unique contribution to their community is appreciated. Strengths are celebrated and valued while opportunities are created to provide exposure to, and enhancement of, other talents and skills. Children will be given the opportunity to express themselves through music, painting, drama, song, movement, and play.
