Have you measured the ground clearance with 30’s? How about overall height?

Hey!! You'll maintain your stock ground clearance....besides the added clearance of the 1.5" arched high clearance arms in front and rear. You can manipulate this ground clearance with your preload or bigger tires. If you go from a 28" to a 30", you'll gain another inch of ground clearance, plus the added clearance under the A-arms.

I purchased the SATV LT kit for my 2018. Have been on 3 rides since and it makes a world of difference. The only draw back I see with it is the extreme reduction in turning radius. It’s about half of stock. I was running the high arc a arms with a 2” lift on 30’s prior to this. The clearance is the same with both kits from what I can tell. I have to drop my tires air pressure to get it in the toy hauler now which I did not have to do before. I did purchase a new bushing kit as well as mine had 6000 miles on the originals. Definitely recommend it.

2022 KAWASAKI TERYX S LE and TERYX4 S LE REVIEW

Ever wonder which Side x Side is toughest?  We’re often asked that question, and the answer is always the same; the Kawasaki Teryx.   The Teryx is built on a chassis that’s more durable than the one under your truck, it’s powered by a rock-solid motor that will always get you home, and it features a comfortable cab.  It’s not the fastest on the trail, but it’s been the most reliable for most of the past decade, and it’s provided plenty of adventure along the way.  The 2022 Kawasaki Teryx S LE and four-seat Teryx4 S LE make an already excellent machine even better.

CROSSOVER KINGS

Crossover machines are designed to perform in two worlds.  They provide a sporty adventure ride while retaining the tools needed to do a little work around the yard or tote your gear to deer camp.  The Teryx and Teryx4 have been Kawasaki’s crossover machines for many years and there are two new models in the lineup.  Both the 2022 Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE get major upgrades designed to improve handling, comfort, and performance.  The biggest upgrades are:

  • WIDER, LONGER WHEELBASE.  62” total width means increased stability.
  • SMOOTHER RIDE.  New, FOX 2.0 LSC piggyback shocks and long travel suspension provide 10.7” front, and 10” rear wheel trave.
  • GROUND CLEARANCE.  Wider, arched A-Arms with 12.2” of ground clearance mean you’ll clear trail obstacles easily.

Both Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE are built on the existing Teryx platform, and that means it already brings plenty of great features to the table.  It’s a proven package that has benefited from yearly upgrades.  Highlights include:

  • Double-X high strength steel chassis
  • Powered by the reliable 783cc, liquid cooled, V-twin engine with EFI
  • Kawasaki CVT transmission with 3-mode selectable 4WD drive system.  (2WD, 4WD, or 4WD + Front Differential Lock)
  • Electronic Power Steering delivers perfect feel with no arm fatigue
  • Comfortable cab and plush seats, with plenty of storage.
  • Tow and Go.  A rear hitch is rated for 1300lbs towing
  • Cargo bed options.  A fixed rear bed on the Teryx4 S LE, or a larger cargo bed on the Teryx S LE
  • Cast aluminum wheels with 27” Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 tires
  • Dual front disc brakes, and a unique, sealed internal wet brake system at rear
  • A sun roof!

CURB and TRAIL APPEAL

We like the Teryx bodywork which not only looks sporty, but has proven to be very durable and resistant to scratches.  Both new LE models get a sharp looking automotive paint, but a unique camo pattern is available as well.  All Teryx models come with side doors which close securely and offer good splash protection.  At the rear is a handy cargo bed with tie-down loops, and should you need to pull a trailer, the Teryx comes with a 2-inch receiver rated for 1300 pounds.  Both new models roll on 27” Maxxis tires and cast aluminum wheels.

COMFORT CAB

Cross-Over machines are all about passenger comfort, and the Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE seats are plush, thick, and hold you firmly in place.  Both the driver and front passenger get an excellent view over the hood thanks to an upright seating position.  On the four seat Teryx4 S LE the rear seating position is slightly raised for a better view as well.  Between the seats is a pair of cup holders and a 12volt accessory outlet.  There is also plenty of knee room even for passengers over six feet tall, and a handy grab bar.  Most importantly, the three-point seat belts do a good job of holding everyone in place, and the belts even come with a small shock absorbing strap.

While the driver and passenger seats on the Teryx are adjustable, to do so is a little more complicated than pulling a lever, and the process involves changing a bolt position in the seat base.  While slightly more involved, it has the benefit of not rattling around on the trail.  In the center of the dash is a multi-function digital display and the numbers are large and easy to read.  Switches are also clearly labeled, and the tilting steering column is infinitely adjustable to the perfect position for every driver.  Down below is a 12volt accessory outlet, and between the seats is the mid-mounted engine, the gear shift lever, a handhold for the passenger, a parking brake lever, and even a pair of cup holders.  There’s even a good-sized glove box in front of the passenger.

ENGINE and CHASSIS

Kawasaki calls the Teryx chassis a double-X design and all main chassis members are large diameter, thin wall steel tubing.  Cross bracing bridges each section and supports the engine, and on the trail it feels rigid but doesn’t beat you up thanks to the suspension.  The suspension on both the two-seat and four-seat LE models is one of it’s most important and best features.

A longer and wider wheelbase always increases stability, but Kawasaki went beyond just bolting on longer A-arms.  While the new Teryx S LE and four-seat Teryx4 S LE get added width, they also benefit from added ground clearance thanks to an arched A-arm design.  This means you’ll clear almost every trail obstacle easily.  If you hit anything bigger than the 12.2 inches of ground clearance, that’s your fault.  Controlling the ride is also a new shock package, and FOX 2.0 LSC single-chamber gas-charged shocks with piggyback reservoirs provide excellent damping performance.  The front shocks have larger diameter bodies matching the two-inch diameter rears.  The longer shock stroke also translates to increased wheel travel with 10.7 inches in the front, and 10.0 inches at the rear.

Powering all of the TERYX Side x Sides is Kawasaki’s smooth running and ultra-reliable, 783cc, EFI fed V-Twin engine, mated to their CVT transmission.  While a mid-mounted engine is excellent for weight distribution, an engine between the front seats can sometimes lead to heat buildup and extra noise.  Kawasaki reduced this by installing a sound absorbing material under the engine cover.  What it all adds up to is an extremely smooth, more powerful engine with less noise and heat back to the passengers.  It’s got the power to pull you up and over pretty much whatever you’re brave enough to attempt.  When 4wd is needed a switch on the dash gets the front wheels clawing at the ground, and a diff-lock can be engaged when things really get sticky.   For towing heavy loads or tasks like plowing snow, the transmission features Low gear as well, which reduces belt wear while maximizing torque.  Overall, the engine and transmission are very well matched!

ARIZONA ADVENTURE RIDE

Arizona can be a great place to test a machine.  You can ride from barren desert to snow, all in the same day, and cover terrain from rocks, to dry lakes, to downed timber.  It was the perfect place for us to try the 2022 Kawasaki Teryx S LE and four-seat Teryx4 S LE.  Combine a day of testing with the Mormon Lake UTV Rally and you’ve got the makings of a great weekend!

With a trailhead above 7000’ we were already in the timbers before the ride started.  Just like previous Teryx models, the engine purred along smoothly and with a nice rumble, and the CVT system did a good job of keeping the motor in the powerband.  Whether creeping through slow, rocky sections or flat out at maximum RPM, shifting was smooth and we were especially glad Kawasaki gave the Teryx a super durable, Kevlar impregnated belt.  The CVT engages quickly, but with no jerky feeling, and backshifts are silky smooth.  It didn’t take long to realize the EFI system had compensated for the higher elevation, and there was still plenty of power on tap, but this trail would be a better test of suspension and handling.  Running down open trails is easy with the Teryx and the added width definitely adds stability both in aggressive cornering and in rock crawling.  Although the Teryx rev limiter kicks in at about 50mph, that’s more than enough for 95% of all trail riding, but we naturally couldn’t help ourselves when we came upon a narrow ATV trail.  It was there that several of the best features of the Teryx shined.

Tight trails are often the downfall of many Side x Sides, especially four-seaters.  In many places on this trail the trees on both sides scrubbed the tires, and there were rocks of all sizes to climb over.  Thankfully, both the two-seat Teryx, and the four-seat version made it through easily.  Both machines maneuver extremely well on tight trails, and the added ground clearance meant we only bottomed out once.  Despite its second row of seats and its slightly longer wheelbase the Teryx4 can handle tight trails like no other four-seater.  It has no problem carving between trees or boulders, or even climbing over them if needed.  Thankfully, the super tough, tube steel chassis protected our underside through the rocks.  The Maxxis tires and cast aluminum wheels held up well, and the new FOX shocks did a good job of soaking up impacts.  You could feel the shocks break in by the end of the day.  The best feature on a ride like this, however, is electronic power steering.  Kawasaki’s EPS is effortless and perfectly calibrated.  As usual, the day ended long before we were ready to put the Teryx back on the trailer.

IMPROVED FEATURES – MORE VALUE – MORE FUN

The 2022 Kawasaki Teryx S LE two-seater and four-seat Teryx4 S LE build on what has made the Teryx an already great platform.  They’re comfortable, reliable, and have great curb appeal.  The core capabilities that made it one of our favorites on the trail before – rock solid durability, a smooth running, powerful engine, and passenger comfort – are still there, but the added ground clearance, improved suspension, and increased stability are changes you can feel.  Two great machines just got even better!

UTV TEST: KAWASAKI TERYX4 S SPECIAL EDITION

KAWASAKI TERYX4 S SPECIAL EDITION – By the staff of Dirt Wheels

KAWASAKI TERYX4 S

Kawasaki redesigned and replaced the original Teryx 750 for the 2014 model year, adding the Teryx4 800 to its UTV lineup alongside the then-new Teryx 800. The two share the same frame, wheelbase, engine and drive-line components, but the Teryx4 has a shorter cargo bed to make room for the two back seats and doors. The Teryx4 800 was an instant hit for families because of its short wheelbase and four-seat cabin comfort. It went largely unchanged for years, despite competition from other manufacturers, due to its popularity and price. For 2021, Kawasaki decided to upgrade the Teryx4 suspension and created the Teryx4 S Limited Edition (and camo). We got a Teryx4 S Special Edition to test at Sand Hollow State Park during the 2023 SxS Adventure Rally on the Rocks.

KAWASAKI TERYX4 S SPECIAL EDITION – WHAT’S NEW FOR 2023–2024?

The difference between the Teryx4 and Teryx4 S is that the S gets longer, high-clearance A-arms that deliver 10.7 inches of front travel and 10 inches of rear travel via Fox 2.0 LSC (low-speed compression) shocks. Limited Edition models have aluminum two-tone wheels, two-tone seats, and choice of paint colors of Metallic Matte Twilight, Blue/Super Black, Ice Grey/Super Black, or Cypher Camo Grey/Super Black. Special Editions add a high-grade Hifonics Bluetooth/AM/FM/USB audio system, Warn VRX 35 Powersport winch, and Special Edition color and graphics. The 2023 comes in Ice Grey/Metallic Onyx Black, while the 2024 is Candy Persimmon Red.

HOW DOES COST COMPARE?

The 2023 Teryx4 S Limited is $19,499 ($19,699 for camo), and the Teryx4 S Special Edition is $20,999. For 2024, the Teryx4 starts at $18,199, the Teryx4 S Camo is $18,799, the Teryx4 S LE is $19,499–$19,699, and the Teryx4 S Special Edition is $20.999. Yamaha’s 2024 Wolverine X4 850 R-Spec is $18,399 and the X4 850 XT-R is $19,999. Honda’s 2024 Pioneer 1000-5 is $18,899 and the Pioneer 1000-6 Crew Deluxe is $21,899. The Polaris General-4 1000 EPS is $22,699, and the General XP 4 1000 Sport is $24,499, while the Premium is $29,999 and the Ultimate is $31,999. Can-Am’s Commander Max 700 DPS is $18,399, the Max 1000 XT is $20,599, and the Max 1000 XT-P is $28,599. Arctic Cat’s Prowler Pro Crew S is $16,299.

KAWASAKI TERYX4 S SPECIAL EDITION – A LOT OF BANG FOR THE BUCK

The Teryx4 has long been a go-to mount for Moab’s Rally on the Rocks, and the HCR Racing long-travel Teryx4 has been an off-road limo. While the Teryx KRX4 1000 has a lot more power and suspension travel, the price tag starts at $27,499 for the 2023 Special Edition and goes to $29,999 for the eS Special Edition. One could buy the Teryx4 HCR long-travel kit that uses the stock shocks for $3,050, and the HCR Teryx4 kit with shocks is $5,500. Many aftermarket companies make long-travel kits for the Teryx because they’re so popular and have been around for many years. Many have been raced in Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series short-course and desert racing over the years.

That said, the stone-stock 2023 Teryx4 S is an excellent mount with a lot of bang for the buck. The 88.2-inch wheelbase, 62.2-inch width, and low stance with 55-inch track width add up to very agile handling for tight woods trails, Hatfield-McCoy and Rocky Mountain switchbacks, and tight and technical Moab and Sand Hollow rock trails. It’s even peppy enough to be fun on Sand Hollow’s red-sand dunes.

KAWASAKI TERYX4 S

Speed and acceleration are perfect for twisty trails. The 783cc V-twin has a fairly short stroke at 69mm for quick revs and is tuned for meaty torque. We got 31 mph out of the Teryx4 in Low and 52 mph downhill in High, as the Teryx4 has an electronic speed limiter set at 50 mph. The added S travel increases trail speeds over the Teryx4, too. CVT tuning and EFI throttle map are matched perfectly for quick acceleration or delicate rock-crawling obstacles. Low is plenty low, and four-wheel engine braking lets the Teryx4 ease down steep hills at a walking pace. The gated range selector is slick, and the 2WD/4WD/diff-lock switch is an easy-to-use dial. The front diff has servos to carry out commands quickly. The CVT has a centrifugal clutch to keep tension on the belt; we’ve never blown one.

While Yamaha’s Wolverine X4 850 has a shorter wheelbase for negotiating mountain switchbacks, it has travel more on par with the standard Teryx4. The Teryx4 S can be pitched into corners harder, thanks to a new width, and added travel and wheelbase make it more stable at speed. It’s a blast to drift into corners on USFS trails, and we quickly go to 2WD for pivoting around tight switchbacks. An upright seating position also lets the driver see better and react to trail obstacles.

kawasaki teryx4 long travel

The Teryx4 S has great shock tuning in the Fox Podium 2.0 piggyback shocks, and 24-position compression clickers are set at the midway point at the factory, so owners can go way softer for ride quality or firmer for improved handling. The S front A-arms are gull-wing for more clearance and the rear H-arms are boxed for strength. It feels like the Teryx4 S has more travel than 10.7 inches front and 10.0 inches rear.

Braking is also sporty and controllable. Twin-piston front hydraulic calipers squeeze perforated rotors, while the rear brakes are oil-bathed multi-disc with built-in parking brakes. However, SE 27-inch tires place more loads on the brakes, and adding a lot of accessory weight taxes the stock brakes on Moab’s slick rock. They are backed by great four-wheel engine braking, though.

KAWASAKI TERYX4 S

WHAT ABOUT TRAIL COMFORT?

The Teryx4 S is an off-road limo. The seats are supportive and comfortable, and the seating position is upright for excellent vision and control. The covers are waterproof and from the jet-ski division. The controls are well-placed and easy to use, especially the drive-mode dial and range selector. There is plenty of elbow and leg room, front and back. The roof provides plenty of shade and rain protection, and the half doors have inner liners for added comfort and security. Inner and outer door-latch levers are sturdy and easy to use. The rear passenger grab bar is nice and has a textured finish for extra traction. We’re not so fond of the front passenger upright handle with motorcycle grip or the cage-mounted loop; an adjustable passenger grab bar would be more comfortable. The extra suspension travel the S model provides adds to the limousine feel. High-rpm driving creates a lot of intake noise from under the hood, though.

kawasaki teryx4 long travel

WHAT IS OUR FINAL ANSWER?

We have been fans of the Teryx4 since its introduction in 2014, and we like the 2023 Teryx4 S even more for its added suspension travel, wheelbase and width. It has long had the great combination of power, agility, EPS assist, durability, engine braking and comfort for four, whether you ride tight woods, mountain roads or slick rock. The S model adds to the adventure and effectiveness of the long-time, go-to off-road limo. Build quality is excellent, and all Kawasaki side-by-sides have a Kawasaki Strong Limited three-year warranty. There are also optional 12-, 24- and 36-month Kawasaki Protection Plus plans available.

2021 Kawasaki Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE Preview

Lucas Cooney

The 2021 Kawasaki Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE look very similar to the Teryx models we’ve driven over the years, but there is a significant upgrade in the form of new Fox long travel suspension and longer A-arms for extra comfort on the trails.

Cushioning the ride are Fox 2.0 LSC piggyback single-chamber gas-charged shocks, which are designed to deliver excellent fade-resistant damping.

As part of the upgraded suspension package, both the 2021 Kawasaki Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE also come with a new A-arm shape that provides more A-arm ground clearance so you can better traverse rocky and technical terrain.

All told, suspension travel increases to 10.7 inches up front and 10.0 inches in the rear.

Check out the press release below for detailed information on the 2021 Kawasaki Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE.

2014 Kawasaki Teryx LE Review

Whether it’s a quick day trip or a weekend-long excursion, the Teryx S LE and Teryx S LE are extremely versatile and ready to provide thrills for the whole family. The powerful 783 cc V-twin engine, FOX 2.0 LSC piggyback shocks, and aggressive styling contribute to the performance and durability needed to handle rugged outdoor trails. Electric Power Steering (EPS) comes standard and when paired with abundant torque and a total towing capacity of 1,300 pounds (with an optional draw bar) the Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE are comfortable and capable.

The 2021 Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE, built Kawasaki Strong and backed by the industry-leading 36-month limited warranty, offer strength, comfort, power, convenience, hauling and towing ability and reliability that make them versatile machines out on the trails.

SUSPENSION & BRAKING

2021 kawasaki teryx s le and teryx4 s le preview, 2021 Kawasaki Teryx S LE Profile Comparison

The Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE side x sides incorporate one of the most recognized names in the high-performance suspension business, FOX Shocks, for its four-wheel independent suspension. For 2021, new longer, steel A-arms can be found at all four corners paired with new FOX 2.0 LSC piggyback shocks that offer more suspension travel and revised suspension settings to help take on obstacles on the trail, while also contributing to a more comfortable ride. The S LE models feature high-performance FOX 2.0 LSC Piggyback single-chamber gas-charged shocks and offer excellent fade-resistant damping performance, even in hard conditions. All four shocks feature piggyback reservoirs enabling the shocks to run cooler and providing more stable damping performance under hard conditions. The front shocks have larger shock bodies matching the two-inch diameter shock bodies mounted in the rear. The longer shock stroke translates to increased wheel travel with the front increasing to 10.7 inches of wheel travel and the rear increasing to 10.0 inches.

The longer A-arms feature a design with more pronounced curvature, meaning more overall ground clearance. The Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE also feature revised suspension settings, offering improved stroke action and a more comfortable ride. Both front and rear shocks are adjustable for compression damping as well as preload. The front suspension is complemented by an anti-roll bar that contributes to front/rear roll balance.

Brake performance is essential for the Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE side x sides and is delivered with high-performance hydraulic disc brakes up in the front and a sealed internal wet brake in the rear. With 200 mm rotors gripped by dual-piston calipers for exceptional feel and stopping power mounted up front, the brakes are recessed within the wheels to help keep them free from debris, while the sturdy steel-braided brake lines help keep a crisp, progressive pedal. At the rear, Kawasaki employs its unique sealed internal wet brake, which features internal components that are completely sealed from the elements, providing braking performance in demanding conditions.

2021 kawasaki teryx s le and teryx4 s le preview, 2021 Kawasaki Teryx4 S LE Action

The Double-X frame construction of the Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE side x sides take technical terrain in stride. This stout frame was designed using detailed computer analysis and features two X-shaped cross members bridging the frame’s box structures from corner-to-corner.

Maneuvering on the trails is easily accomplished with the tight turning radius, reducing the need for multi-point turns, while the underbody engine guards help shield vital components from dirt and debris.

This impressive chassis package is further enhanced with a wide-track/wide-body design. The new wide stance helps create a more planted feel, increases agility during cornering and boosts the ability to navigate the terrain. The new wide stance has been increased by approximately 4 inches in the front and 2.4 inches in the rear, bringing the overall width to over 62 inches. The new longer 88.2-inch wheelbase provides a wider stance that means ground disturbances have less of an effect on the cabin, increasing ride comfort and contributing to better handling. The mid-engine placement also helps by centralizing the vehicle’s center of mass, which reduces the turning inertia and promotes more fluid directional changes.

The construction and tread design of the large 27” Maxxis Bighorn 2.0 help maximize forward traction, while optimizing driver feedback for cornering.

The S LE model side x sides a maximum 12.2 inches of ground clearance at max preload, helping to negotiate obstacles. The high approach and departure angles (78-degrees in the front for both the Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE and 87-degrees and 69-degrees in the rear for Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE, respectively) also reduce the possibility of catching the front bumper or scraping the rear.

2021 kawasaki teryx s le and teryx4 s le preview, 2021 Kawasaki Teryx S LE Front

With a 783cc engine that generates power and torque in the low- and mid-range of the powerband, the Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE side x sides are very capable in a variety of environments. The purpose-built 90-degree V-twin engine delivers great fuel efficiency, while also having enough torque and power to conquer the trail.

Transferring all that torque to the ground is a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with a centrifugal clutch assembly, and a three-mode switch selectable four-wheel drive system that allows access to either 2WD (light steering, great handling), 4WD or 4WD + Front Differential Lock. The latter helps to provide optimum traction by simply rotating a dash-mounted switch.

The CVT provides a quick response and direct engine “feel” in sportier riding situations, and its unique engine braking ability increases driver confidence on descents, while turning and in a variety of conditions.

So, whether carving on trails through the woods or traveling through the open desert, the Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE side x sides have the ideal drivetrain mode to handle it.

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING

2021 kawasaki teryx s le and teryx4 s le preview, 2021 Kawasaki Teryx S LE Rocks

Precise steering with reduced effort is the hallmark of the standard Electric Power Steering (EPS) system in the 2021 Kawasaki Teryx S LE and Teryx4 LE models. The EPS is only active when the engine is running, limiting battery drain.

Input from vehicle speed and torque sensors determine the amount of steering assistance required, giving more during slow-speed use and less as speed increases. EPS offers additional benefits, especially on challenging surfaces, where reduced steering kickback and bump-steer mean less fatigue for the driver.

Both S LE models come standard with a tilt steering column. It allows the steering wheel to be tilted to a position that suits the driver or can be moved out of the way to ease cabin access. To reflect its sporty performance and handling, all Teryx® side x sides have a thick steering wheel. This is designed to be more comfortable in the driver’s hand, giving more confidence on trails and improving the overall feel of the driving experience.

HAULING & TOWING

2021 kawasaki teryx s le and teryx4 s le preview, 2021 Kawasaki Teryx4 S LE Loaded

The Teryx S LE and Teryx4 S LE side x sides are designed with the perfect combination of rugged sport performance and capability, from hauling family members or equipment to towing.

The Teryx S LE features a 27.6 x 43.3-inch cargo bed that is 10.4 inches deep and boasts a heavy-duty 600 lb. payload capacity, while the Teryx4 S LE has a 17.9 x 47.6-inch, 250 lb. capacity cargo box that is 8.7 inches deep. The cargo bed has a flat bottom for carrying supplies out on the trail.

The cargo bed of the Teryx S LE has KQR™ accessory-ready rails, which allow for convenient mounting of Kawasaki Genuine Accessories and/or tools to the bed rails. Four tie-down loops help secure the cargo and also features two rear storage compartments with lids that offer 48 gallons of storage capacity.

The Teryx S LE features a latching tailgate, which can be removed without requiring tools to facilitate loading and unloading of cargo and cleaning. The tailgate features molded drink holders for added convenience.

A 2-inch hitch receiver is standard equipment on both S LE models for a substantial 1,300 lb. towing capability once equipped with the optional draw bar.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

An excellent read! Thanks for much for sharing the Russian metro system with us. We're heading to Moscow in April and exploring the metro stations were on our list and after reading your post, I'm even more excited to go visit them. Thanks again 🙂
