Review: Kendrick Lamar brings Big Steppers tour to the Wells Fargo Center

The acclaimed Compton, California rapper played South Philadelphia on Tuesday night for the first time in five years.

Kendrick Lamar at his The Big Steppers Tour stop in Dallas last month.

Kendrick Lamar’s new album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers , plays out like one long self-interrogation, a two-volume look inward at the burdens he carries.

That struggle came to South Philadelphia Tuesday night, when the Compton, Calif., rapper brought his Big Steppers tour to a packed Wells Fargo Center with openers Baby Keem and Tanna Leone, both of whom are signed to his pgLang label.

The Pulitzer prize winning rapper’s stunningly stylized headlining set was structured like a 1-hour, 45-minute therapy session, a 28-song self-examination complete with the voice of a British doctor — was that Helen Mirren? — urging her patient to do the necessary work on himself.

He was working, alright. When he last played the Wells Fargo on tour for 2017′s acclaimed Damn ., Lamar maintained a minimalist aesthetic, eschewing spectacle as if to prove a lone performer could command the attention of an arena-sized space with the force of his intense focus.

Lamar hasn’t compromised his art one iota, but with The Big Steppers he’s added a flair for visual presentation, creating a theatrical tableau that magnified the internal conflicts playing out in his songs and in his head.

“I hope you find peace in this lifetime,” another disembodied woman’s voice intoned at the start of “United in Grief,” the set-opening song.

“I’ve been going through something,” Lamar’s voice was heard to say, as he appeared for the first time, rapping while seated at a piano. A ventriloquist’s dummy looked down at him, a mini-me Kendrick in matching dark suit and one glittering Michael Jackson-style glove, keeping a creepy eye on him.

The set design was wide open and spacious, all right angles with a square stage flanked by rectangular video screens that turned into a giant cube when curtains were draped from near the ceiling to the floor.

Lamar spent most of the night alone on stage, though he was sometimes accompanied by female and male dancers who joined him in marching formation.

He moved with theatrical flair from the main stage to another platform in the middle of the arena, and later yet another one at the far end. He was often dramatically lit from below, his giant silhouette appearing on the curtained cube behind him.

The play of light and shadow illuminated the murky world of doubt, self-recrimination, mourning, and healing in Mr. Morale songs like “Rich Spirit,” “Father Time,” and “Purple Hearts.”

And it was a sight to behold when the 35-year-old Lamar, who rapped with trademark precision all night, pulled out past hits like “Backseat Freestyle” from 2012′s Good Kid, m.a.a.d. City, and “King Kunta” from 2015′s To Pimp A Butterfly .

The general admission crowd on the arena floor exploded with energy, bouncing about with phones held high, capturing every second for posterity.

Probably the most impressive detonation of the evening came after the therapist’s voice issued a warning: “Mr. Lamar, once again you’ve let your ego get the best of you. Must I remind you how this went before?”

That was followed by “Humble” from Damn. in a thundering, reworked, bass-heavy version that shook the room. Lamar addressed himself: “Be humble,” he rapped, “Bitch, sit down.”

The dynamic opening wasn’t quite sustained throughout the set. The staging grew less eye-popping, and the choreography settled into more predictable arena spectacle modes.

There were also momentum issues. A late peak of the show came with “Alright,” the To Pimp declaration of resilience that became a Black Lives Matter anthem, particularly after the police killing of George Floyd in 2020.

The staging was a bit odd. The therapist’s voice announced, “Time for a COVID test,” and Lamar performed inside a clear plastic cube, surrounded by four people in hazmat suits.

Maybe it was meant to be a reassurance that we would be alright coming out of pandemic isolation. Or perhaps it was this: We’re all stuck in isolation with ourselves, and unless we undertake the self-examination that’s at the core of Mr. Morale , we in fact will not be alright.

In any case, it didn’t really matter, because even though Lamar was rapping behind a transparent wall, the crowd went wild. The song was without question the high energy peak of the latter part of the show. The trouble was that there were seven more to follow, which struggled to match that level of excitement.

Lamar closed the show with Mr. Morale’s “Savior” in which he stressed to the crowd that, with all his imperfections, that’s exactly what he is not. Another voice-over shared wisdom familiar to Spider-Man fans: “With great power comes great responsibility.”

But before that, there was one last blast of fun, courtesy of Baby Keem. The 21-year- old rapper born Hykeem Carter Jr., who is Lamar’s cousin, seemed not quite ready for the big stage when he played the Made in America festival last year.

On Tuesday, after an opening set by Leone to which the young crowd politely paid attention, Keem was welcomed by passionate chants of his name. He was impressively composed, and fans were primed for every track from last year’s The Melodic Blue . And then, toward the end of Lamar’s set, Keem joined his cousin for “Family Ties,” their 2021 duet.

The room lit up as the two faced each other from opposite ends of the arena. Keem thanked his cousin, calling him by a family nickname: “I’m grateful to Man-Man for opening the doors.” And Lamar loosened up and boasted: “I’m not a trending topic, I’m a prophet .. looking for a better me.” With the Mr. Morale album and The Big Steppers tour, that search continues.

Here’s the set list to Lamar’s 1 hour 45 performance, which included 28 songs, though a few of them were snippets.

Backseat Freestyle

Rich Spirit

Father Time

A Dream Setlist For Kendrick Lamar’s 2022 Tour

Our wishlist of songs we'd like to hear when the rapper hits the road in July

A Dream Setlist For Kendrick Lamar’s 2022 Tour

Following the arrival of Mr. Moral & The Big Steppers , Kendrick Lamar is set to make his grand return to the stage in just a few short months. “The Big Steppers Tour,”  as the name implies, supports the rapper’s latest project and brings along Baby Keem and Tanna Leone. The expansive tour covers four countries and runs from late July through December of 2022, giving rap fans everywhere maximum opportunity to see the year’s most talked-about release performed live. (Grab tickets via Ticketmaster here.)

While the tour’s name takes after Kendrick’s latest double album, the setlist will undoubtedly cover each leg of the rapper’s celebrated career. From early Overly Dedicated and Section .80 gems to good kid, m.A.A.d city ’s narrative-heavy masterstrokes, along with To Pimp a Butterfly and untitled unmastered. ’s jazzy, artful tunes and DAMN. ’s Pulitzer Prize-winning bangers, Kendrick’s setlist will very likely supplement the density of Mr. Moral with established fan favorites.

What’s less known, however, is whether the Compton-native will bring out his openers, each of whom features on Mr. Moral , during his headlining performance. Maybe even a performance of Baby Keem’s “family ties” or “range brothers?”

Regardless, the energy of the world tour might even top that of DAMN. ’s. The closest thing Kendrick fans have had to a live performance as of late was his appearance at the 2022 Pepsi Superbowl Halftime Show , which saw him run through a quick medley in celebration of Dr. Dre. Notably, the medley featured no hints to the music of Mr. Moral & The Big Steppers . So, with live debuts at the ready, come prepared for an arena’s worth of rowdy fans to be rapping along.

Editor's Pick

With Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar Chooses Himself and Makes a Masterpiece

In anticipation of such a time, we here at Consequence have put together our dream setlist. Is it wishful thinking? Maybe. But if anyone from Kendrick’s team is reading and wants to take our suggestions — cough — we’ll be grateful.

— Jonah Krueger

I can’t imagine anything more cathartic than screaming, “Bitch, you ugly as fuck!” in a stadium filled with thousands. — Kelly Park

2. “Backseat Freestyle”

Also add “I pray my dick get big as the Eiffel Tower” to the list of Kendrick lyrics we’d like to scream with a sold-out arena. — J.K.

3. “King Kunta”

Leave it to Kendrick to make a genuine bop of a track that intertwines his contemporary rap king bravado with Alex Haley’s Roots: The Saga of an American Family (1976) and Ralph W. Ellison’s Invisible Man (1952). One of the highlights of To Pimp a Butterfly , this track goes hard and will keep the energy high for the crowd. — André Heizer

Another one of Kung-Fu Kenny’s uncut bangers, “DNA” will light up the arena as soon as Kendrick raps the stunted “I got, I got, I got.” The boastful tune has enough energy to power a small city, and Kendrick knows it, as it was a popular opener for many of his post- DAMN. sets. We expect him to continue to regularly pull it out. – – J.K.

5. “Untitled 07 | 2014 – 2016”

It might be eight minutes long, but “Untitled 07” remains one of the essential tracks off of untitled unmastered. Kendrick usually only performs the first leg of the track live, but, hell, let’s run the whole thing; beat switch, lo-fi outro, and all. — J.K.

6. “Worldwide Steppers”

Mr. Moral & The Big Steppers might not have the same club appeal as a record like DAMN. — it’s hard to imagine a packed club vibing to “We Cry Together,” “Auntie Diaries,” or “Mother I Sober” — but the project still houses tracks that will undoubtedly prove to go extremely hard live. Of them, the hypnotic “Worldwide Steppers” could simultaneously have the whole place moving and contemplating their relationship with sex, class, and race. What a time! — J.K.

7. “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe”

Even as Kendrick matures past the young K.Dot portrayed on good kid, m.A.A.d city , the project still houses some of his most essential tracks. Chief among them might be “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe,” a certified tone-setter and crowd-pleaser. — J.K.

8. “Savior”

Kendrick made you think about it, but he is not your savior. This song captures one of the main themes of Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers . The weight that comes with the spotlight of success for a Black individual in the United States is unjust, an aspect of a society with deep systemic issues. This track will be an excellent choice to bring out Baby Keem to the stage for a series of songs. — A.H.

9. “range brothers”

Top of the mornin’. When Baby Keem dropped The Melodic Blue in 2021, Kendrick fans were simultaneously bewildered and amused with his parts in this song. Nine months and a full studio album later, this track is certified fresh, and will surely have fans singing along: Let’s get this shit. — A.H.

10. “family ties”

Off Baby Keem’s The Melodic Blue , this song is undeniably among the best hip-hop songs of 2021, with a Grammy to show for it. It will be a great way to send off his cousin before the second half of Kendrick’s show. — A.H.

11. “Swimming Pools (Drank)”

It’ll be quite shocking if Kendrick doesn’t pull out “Swimming Pools (Drank),” one of his biggest pre- DAMN. hits. Even with its meditations on addiction and self-harm, it’s still a party track at its core, and what’s a Kendrick concert if not an intellectually charged party? — J.K.

12. “Rich Spirit”

One of the most melodic cuts from Mr. Moral & The Big Steppers , “Rich Spirit” follows in the footsteps of tracks like “i” with its self-loving chorus: “Bitch, I’m attractive.” And if I’m at a Kendrick show and feeling good, that’s exactly the type of hook I want to hear. — J.K.

13. “Purple Hearts”

“Purple Hearts” ends the first disc of Mr. Moral & The Big Steppers and, frankly, has one of the sexiest beats found on the entirety of the double LP. The luxuriousness of the track gives it the potential to be a future live staple. — J.K.

14. “LOVE.”

“LOVE.” had one of the longest tails of DAMN. ’s rollout. After initially charting at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, it later peaked at No. 11 after it was rereleased as DAMN. ’s third single six months later. Though it’s unlikely that ZACARI will hop on stage to sing the hook, it’s likely Kendrick adds it to the setlist regardless. — J.K.

15. “DUCKWORTH.”

In the closing track of his Pulitzer Prize winning DAMN. (2017), Kendrick shows us why he got the award by putting on a masterclass in songwriting. Weaving three narratives together, he drops a bomb at the end that stuns listeners. A single act of kindness is all it takes to change the course of multiple lives. — A.H.

16. “Father Time”

This track off Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers (2022) is a great way to roll off the previous track, and is all about Kendrick’s strenuous relationship with his father. One of the highlights from the album, this song shows K.Dot’s vulnerable side while he attempts to call out the toxic masculinity in his culture. – – A.H.

17. “m.A.A.d city”

Hopefully the infamous incident recently referenced in “Auntie Diaries” doesn’t dissuade Kendrick from pulling out this classic good kid, m.A.A.d city banger. It’s one of the best tracks on the record, if not of Kendrick’s entire discography, and deserves to withstand the controversy. — J.K.

18. “Money Trees”

“Money Trees” has easily stood the test of time. Kendrick and Jay Rock encapsulate a landscape of rap subgenres, all wrapped up and packaged into a six-minute magnum opus. — K.P.

19. “United in Grief”

Starting a set with the first song from your latest release is an easy go-to, but it seems particularly fitting in the case of “United in Grief.” Not only does it carry an indescribable feeling of the start of something great, but it perfectly frames the themes Kendrick goes on to tackle on the rest of Mr. Moral & The Big Steppers — or, in this case, the themes he’ll go on to tackle on stage. — J.K.

20. “Alright”

One couldn’t refuse the chance to transport into the sonic universe of Kendrick, Thundercat, Pharrel Williams, and the unwavering energy that “Alright” brings to the table. – – K.P.

21. “HUMBLE.”

When Kendrick dropped “Humble” as the first single to his To Pimp A Butterfly follow-up, the world lit on fire. Here was a more club-friendly Kendrick that was poised to dominate the charts. He’ll almost assuredly break out the song, and the crowd will even more assuredly refrain from his advice to “sit down” when he does. — J.K.

I am hitting him up July 29th in New Orleans. Presale is tomorrow. I never could find a Ticketmaster verified fan registration link to get a code so I am going to do the best I can. This is the must hyped I’ve been since I saw Radiohead. I am certain it’s going to be amazing.

Taylor Swift

Leading up to the release of Taylor Swift ‘s The Tortured Poets Department , one question lingered in the backs of Swiftie minds for months: How would the new album affect the already three-hour-plus setlist of the pop star’s ongoing global Eras Tour?

When the record finally dropped April 19, bringing with it not just 16 pre-announced tracks, but 15 surprise bonus songs as well, their concerns were only exacerbated. How could Swift possibly slim down her pre- Tortured Poets setlist to fit any new material once she hit the road again? Where would she even begin selecting just a handful of the 31 songs on TTPD to include? Would she even bother trying? (Based on a video the singer posted of recent rehearsals for her next run of shows, which kicks off May 9 in Paris, the answer to that last question is most likely a “Yes.”)

It’s no small task, especially given that no matter what the “Anti-Hero” singer cuts or adds, some fans are bound to be upset when their favorites inevitably don’t make the final listing. Even so, Billboard has risen to the challenge, selecting the best possible collection of Tortured Poets tracks to represent Swift’s newest era while trimming the fat of past eras for an updated, ultimate dream Eras Tour setlist.

Some songs were hard to say good-bye to (sorry, “Mastermind”), and others were truly painful to not extend an invitation (don’t hate us, “Guilty as Sin?”). But in service of a well-rounded, comprehensive Eras experience, difficult decisions had to be made. Keep reading to see how Swift should move forward with her trek, Tortured Poets and all — plus, an idea on how her debut album Taylor Swift can finally get its flowers — below.

ACT I: 'Lover'

  • “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince”
  • “Cruel Summer”
  • “The Man”
  • “You Need to Calm Down”
  • “Lover”

CUT: “The Archer”

Note: Swift could also probably benefit from shortening her meandering pre-“The Man” monologue in Act I to save room for more songs later on.

ACT II: 'Fearless'

  • “Fearless”
  • “You Belong With Me”
  • “Love Story”

Note: At three songs, the Fearless era is already the perfect length, holistically comprised of the album’s title track and its two breakthrough hits, which made Swift a global star. No room for cuts here.

ACT III: 'Evermore'

  • “‘Tis the Damn Season”
  • “Willow”
  • “Champagne Problems”
  • “Tolerate It”

CUT: “Marjorie”

Note: Swift definitely deserves to drink in the applause for a moment after her magnificent piano performance of “Champagne Problems,” but at past Eras shows, she’s allowed the ovations to last for upwards of eight minutes . To save room for more songs, she may want to keep things moving at future stops.

ACT IV: 'Reputation'

  • “…Ready For It?”
  • “Delicate”
  • “Don’t Blame Me”
  • “Look What You Made Me Do”

Note: If you’ve been to an Eras show, you know: There’s no messing with the Reputation set. The already ear-splitting crowd somehow gets even louder as soon as this first notes of “Ready For It” blast through the speakers, and the stadium stays at peak volume throughout the traditional “1, 2, 3, Let’s go b–ch” chant during “Delicate” and the seamless transition between “Don’t Blame Me” and “Look What You Made Me Do.” No cuts.

ACT V: 'Speak Now'

  • “Enchanted”
  • “Long Live”

Note: Justice for Speak Now . Swift’s third album deserves a proper showcase each night, so we sincerely hope that the pop star doesn’t scrap “Long Live” — which she only added to the setlist four months into the Eras Tour’s first leg — to make room for TTPD.

ACT VI: 'Red'

  • “22”
  • “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”
  • “I Knew You Were Trouble”
  • “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)”

Note: It may seem like an easy time-saver to simply swap out the ten-minute version of “All Too Well” for Swift’s original five-minute version, but doing so would be robbing Swifties of the best ten-minute segment in the entire show. We simply won’t hear of it. That song aside, the other three hits on this mini-set — similar to the Fearless era — form a perfect bite-sized capsule of the album they represent, leaving no excess behind.

ACT VII: 'Folklore'

  • “Betty”
  • “August”
  • “Illicit Affairs” (Bridge Only)
  • “My Tears Ricochet”
  • “Cardigan”

CUTS: “The 1” / “Invisible String” & “The Last Great American Dynasty”

Note: Sorry, Folklorians: It’ll always have a special place at the heart of the Eras Tour show, but Swift has now released three new albums since her initial alt-folk pivot — hence the harsher cuts here.

ACT VIII: '1989'

  • “Style”
  • “Blank Space”
  • “Shake It Off”
  • “Wildest Dreams”
  • “Bad Blood”

Note: It’s almost impossible to imagine cutting any of the five songs on the 1989 setlist, each of them massive, stadium-rocking hits a full ten years after their original release (three of them peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while “Wildest Dreams” and “Style” reached Nos. 5 and 6, respectively). A time-saving mashup between two or more of them could, however, be an avenue to explore if needed, with a majority of the tracks boasting similar keys and corresponding musical styles.

INTERLUDE: Surprise Songs

  • Surprise Song No. 1
  • Surprise Song No. 2

Note: It’s safe to assume that the nightly surprise song section will be where Swift makes up for unused Tortured Poets songs, giving fans the chance to hear acoustic versions of the 20+ tracks on her newest album that probably won’t make it onto the regular setlist .

ACT IX: 'Midnights'

  • “Lavender Haze”
  • “Anti-Hero”
  • “Vigilante Shit”
  • “Bejeweled”
  • “Karma”

CUTS: “Midnight Rain” & “Mastermind”

Note: The only non-single to remain safe, “Vigilante Shit” would’ve been next on the chopping block. But honestly — what would the Eras Tour be without Swift’s iconic sultry, Chicago -esque dance break?

ACT X: 'The Tortured Poets Department'

  • “Fortnight”
  • “The Tortured Poets Department”
  • “Down Bad”
  • “So Long, London”
  • “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?”
  • Mashup: “Teardrops on My Guitar” x “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart”
  • “But Daddy I Love Him”

Note: As Swift’s newest album, Tortured Poets deserves to be the finale. And while, upon first listen, the record may not seem like it has enough stadium-ready bops to close out the show, the above songs 100% have the potential to be converted into the high-energy moments the Eras Tour commands. Just imagine the theatrical potential of “Who’s Afraid,” the meta-ness of a real-life crowd chanting “More!” during “Broken Heart,” and confetti falling from the sky during the final chorus of “But Daddy…” We picture gothic visuals, writing desks, typewriter props, period costumes and lightning strikes during this section.

Now, about that mashup. It’s absurd that Swift has never included any songs from her 2006 self-titled debut album — aka her first-ever era — on the main Eras Tour setlist. But it’s not too late to rectify that.

Picture this: The lights go down after Swift performs “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” Costumes change, a tiger cage and other circus-themed set pieces are wheeled away. Then, the songwriter — her silhouette barely visible under the dim glow of an aquamarine spotlight — sings a cappella the final chorus of the first song about faking smiles in the face of heartbreak she ever released: “Teardrops on My Guitar.” Emphasis on the lyric, “the only one who’s got enough of me to break my heart.”

After she trails off on the last line — “Drew looks at me, I fake a smile so he won’t see” — the stadium comes to life once more as the crowd’s multi-color light-up bracelets go haywire, an explosion of sound filling the space. “I can read your mind,” Swift jumps in, surrounded by dancers as the lights suddenly go up, revealing one last fabulous costume. “‘She’s having the time of her life…'”

Once that’s done, she’ll move on to the finale, flipping off the haters, embracing her truest fans and proudly proclaiming her love for the man of her dreams in one fell swoop with “But Daddy I Love Him,” disappearing offstage before concertgoers have even finished singing along. Fin.

It’s another all-Taylor Swift edition of the Hot 100 chart this week

Once again, there’s only one name on the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 this week — Taylor Swift.

Swift repeated — and bested — her own 2022 feat by claiming the 14 top slots on the singles’ chart. She previously took out the entire top 10 after the debut of her 2022 album, “Midnights” — the first artist ever to do so.

With the release this month of “The Tortured Poets Department,” it was never a question as to whether Swift would dominate the pop charts, only whether she could break her own previous records. She did so handily , with the Post Malone collaboration “Fortnight” leading the Hot 100 en route to 2.61 million equivalent album sales in the U.S.

Taylor Swift turns heel, owning her chaos and messiness on ‘The Tortured Poets Department’

Swift’s 11th studio LP, ‘The Tortured Poets Department,’ released at midnight Eastern time, follows a busy period in the 34-year-old’s personal and professional spheres.

April 18, 2024

Among the many chart records Swifts set this week — “Fortnight” is her 12th Hot 100 No. 1, placing her sixth on the all-time chart leaderboard. She now has 59 top 10 singles, and placed 32 songs on the Hot 100 this week (all 31 from the deluxe version of “The Tortured Poets Department,” plus older single “Cruel Summer”), each the most ever for a woman in the chart’s history.

With “Poets,” she tied Jay-Z for the most No. 1s among solo artists in the seven-decade history of the Hot 100. Only the Beatles, with 19 No. 1s, best her so far.

The Hot 100 is a mix of all-genre U.S. streaming services (both official audio and video), radio airplay and sales data. The latter figure was especially impressive for Swift, as “Poets” sold 859,000 vinyl LPs among 1.914 million album sales (vinyl, CDs , downloads and cassettes) in its first week, while the 31 songs on the deluxe edition generated 891.34 million week one streams.

Swift most recently won album of the year at the Grammys for “Midnights,” becoming the most lauded artist in the Recording Academy’s most acclaimed category. Swift’s record-obliterating Eras tour begins again May 9 in Paris with a whole new era to add to the set list.

Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger

Reviewing ‘Hackney Diamonds’ in October – their first studio album of new material since 2005’s ‘ A Bigger Bang ’ – NME  described the record as an “absolute barnstormer”.

The four-star write-up added: “But if ‘Hackney Diamonds’ does round off the most successful career in rock music ever, it wouldn’t be a bad place to leave it. A natural end, but definitely not a normal one.”

Ronnie Woods recently spoke to NME about the “explosive” new songs and how they would translate live. “I have complete faith. We could play the whole album, you know what I mean? But [Mick and Keith] will go, ‘Oh no Ron, that’s so ambitious’. We’re not gonna forget the back catalogue,” he shared.
