Lake Maggiore

Maggiore is Italy’s international lake – its northernmost point protrudes sinuously into Switzerland, while its Italian shores are shared by Piedmont (west) and Lombardy (east). Free of Como’s overt glamour or Garda’s Disney-esque theme parks, it is often considered the most peaceful of northern Italy’s great bodies of water, its shores a little less crowded and its hinterland intriguingly wilder. The star attractions are the Borromean Islands, which, like a fleet of fine vessels, lie at anchor at the Borromean Gulf’s (Golfo Borromeo) entrance, an incursion of water between the lake’s two main towns, Stresa and Verbania.

Baveno and Feriolo

Must see villages on lake maggiore.

Have you ever heard from the city of Baveno? It’s a small city located in the Borromean Gulf of lake Maggiore that overlooks an incredible panorama over the lake & the mountains! The old church of the XI century is surely worth a visit, with its magnificient arcade of the via crucis. If you will visit Baveno you will notice Villa Henfrey-Branca, an historical building in Gothic style dated back to 1870, do you know that Queen Victoria stayed there with its baby child Beatrice?

On the mountains that surround the city you will see the quarries for the extraction of  pink granite , one of the most famous of the area… In fact in Baveno there are many streets and squares whose names are dedicated to this material and its processing!

3 KM from Baveno you will see the little village of Feriolo, an important point for the processing and shipment of granite. Do you know that in Feriolo starts the cycle path Toce river “ “Ciclovia del Toce” ? Starting in Feriolo and cycling along the river you could reach Mergozzo and its little lake but also Domodossola !

Claudia Ruschena

Qualified tour guide for Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta, the Borromean Islands and Stresa

Over than twenty years of experience!

I chose this job because it is always varied, rewarding and I am in contact with people. It is a profession I carry on with care and attention both for what concerns the given data and for the interpersonal relations. I undertake myself to adapt the programme to the interest of the guests (in this way I take care of them personally) and I am glad to answer to the numerous questions. Guided tours include arts and history, botany and anecdotes, so as to keep the interest lively and to leave to the guests, who often communicate me their appreciation, a nice memory of the visited resorts.

- Valued as the most valuable painting in the house inventory after the death of Giberto V Borromeo in 1837, it attracted the attention of Bernard Berenson in 1904. We appreciated the flexibility of the self-guided trip. I loved that the rides incorporated historical and other sites so we felt like we got to see the interesting sites in the area while still riding much of the day.

Cyclist riding with rolling hills and vineyards in the background

Our host Wiebe was amazing, providing great insight into each day's ride. Gearing on the bikes were perfect for the challenging terrain. I really could have ridden all day there.

Belvedere is in an excellent location. Their on site restaurant, another hotel restaurant across the street, a third restaurant a very short walk away, plus a small market on the same corner gave us plenty of options for food and drink. Breakfast at the hotel was fresh and delicious every morning. The room, pool, and poolside bar were very nice. We especially enjoyed getting to meet the owners dog, Fiona.

TABLE SET FOR MEAL BY THE LAKE

High quality meals. Guido was able to help with bike setup. When I lost a screw in one of my cleats he was able to quickly help me out to replace it and get back on the road

Everything about the trip was perfect. Our guide for the trip was incredibly knowledgeable and very helpful. The routes that we were able to choose from were wonderful and when we asked how to add on, we were given east to follow directions to another loop. The accommodations were perfect. The whole trip was a wonderful experience. And the bikes…wow.

Greg, Trek Travel Guest

Guido (owner) and his entire staff have treated us initially like guests, but we became better acquainted with the staff, we felt more like the hotel’s extended family. It is fun to be on a first-name basis with such good and helpful people!

Your Day. You Decide.

Our self-guided vacations are designed to fit all types of travel styles. Whether you like to spend your time relaxing or on a non-stop adventure, you get to decide what your day looks like. Choose your mileage, itinerary, and experience level and leave the rest to us!

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • We do our best to avoid busy roadways as much as possible, however, urban riding and sections of busy roads are unavoidable for some segments of your rides.
  • Good fitness and good bike handling skills are required to ride bikes in this region because the terrain varies from hilly to mountainous, with some sustained climbs and long technical descents. The use of an e-bike requires excellent bike handling skills. As this trip runs in high season, people must also be comfortable riding in traffic, especially in the town centers. This trip is recommended for our Level 3 and Level 4 riders only.
  • Hotel Belvedere is a “bike hotel” with a great service and an excellent onsite restaurant. Parking is free at the hotel and you can also take advantage of their free laundry service for cycling gear.

Lago Maggiore Rowing Tours & Training Camps

Rowing, nature, fun and culture

Lago Maggiore is waiting for you!

In 2015 we organized the 2015 World Rowing Tour. Over 70 rowers from 19 countries rowed the length and breadth of Lake Maggiore. What better way to discover and admire the beauty of Lake Maggiore than from a rowing boat?

lago maggiore tour

Since then we have had the pleasure of organising many rowing tours for rowers from all over the world. Our tours are tailor-made according to our guests’ rowing experience and requirements using Coastal Rowing boats which are ideal for rowing on such a large lake.

Tours are usually planned over 3 to 5 days rowing different routes each day. During a break in rowing it is possible to enjoy a visit to one of the many interesting sights around the lake, lunch in a local restaurant or simply a cup of coffee at a lakeside café.

We also organise itineraries for non-rowing guests, and alternative itineraries in case of bad weather conditions when it is not possible to row on the lake.

Safety is important, and we always have a tour guide and staff on a support boat and, where necessary, support staff and transport on land to provide assistance for the duration of the tour.

We can provide information and assistance for accommodation, transport and other activities in the area.

For further information on our rowing tours on Lake Maggiore or other beautiful rowing locations in Italy, including participation at the Vogalonga in Venice, please contact us at: [email protected]

General info.

We recommend our customer to go to the ticket office about 20 minutes before the departure. In the summer and during holidays there may be considerable traffic and therefore there may be queues at the ticket offices. The ticket offices of the main towns are located near the docks. If you embark from a port without a ticket office service on land, you can buy your ticket on board without any additional cost. Disabled people can always buy the ticket on board without extra charge.

Pay attention! During the embarking, pay always attention to the onboard and ashore staff. At the dock it is possible to find more than a motorship: pay attention to the information given by the staff, not to miss any connection or board on the wrong motorship. The staff is at your disposal for any doubt. Due to bad weather or strong wave motion, routes may be suspended: to have any update, it is possible to ask the ticket offices or the freephone 800-551801(valid only in Italy).

Lago Maggiore, Italy

Lago maggiore.

Located on the Italian Lake Maggiore with the mountainous Alps in the backgrounds,  boats sailing in the breeze along with the picturesque town, the small islands sprouting from the water. Ancient castles rising over the hills, the towering palace of Isola Bella surrounded by exquisite gardens.

The location couldn’t be more perfect for a magical Pesach to be pampered and cared for by the Feder Family and Tour Olam staff.

Tourists visiting all ensure they stop at Lake Maggiore and surrounding architectural sites to view the culture and ancient heritage. In early spring the Lake’s area reveals stunning landscapes, clear blue waters, and the beautiful docks and bays.
