IELTS Listening: Cambridge 12 Academic Test 5; Listening Section 1; Family Excursions; with recordings, solutions, tips and best explanations

This IELTS Listening post is based on the solutions and explanations for Cambridge IELTS 12 Academic Test 5 Listening Section 1 . All the questions in this section have been discussed with their solutions along with the best explanations. I hope this post will help new learners of IELTS and candidates to understand different problems related to IELTS Listening and guide them properly to attain a good band score.

In the IELTS Listening test, you will hear some recordings from which you have to answer questions that are printed in a booklet. You’ll hear the recordings for 30 minutes and you’ll need to answer the questions while you listen. There are 4 parts to this test; each part contains 10 questions and a single piece of recording related to the questions. At the end of the test, you’ll have 10 minutes to transfer your answers from the question booklet to the answer sheet. You must use a pencil; no pen or coloured markers are allowed.

In this post, we’re looking at the solutions and explanations for Cambridge 12 Academic Test 5 Section 1 (Questions 1-10).

Cambridge 12 Academic Test 5 Part 1:

Questions 1-10: Completing notes with ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

The title of the notes is: FAMILY EXCURSIONS

Play the following recording:

As you get around 30-40 seconds to have a look at questions 1-4, you must underline the keywords (words that help us to find out answers for each question) correctly.

Let’s have a quick look at the questions and mark the KEYWORDS with a pencil:

IELTS Listening: Cambridge 12 Academic Test 5; Listening Section 1; Family Excursions; with recordings, solutions, tips and best explanations

(I’ve marked the KEYWORDS with a yellow marker to help you understand better; don’t do that in the exam, YOU MUST USE A PENCIL.)

The yellow lines and circles are the keywords of the questions which can help us find the answers.

Now, let’s listen to each part of the recording and find the answer for questions 1-4.

Question no. 1:

  • Can take photos of the _________ that surround the lake

Here, in this question, our KEYWORDS are take photos and surround the lake , which means that we need to listen to any information given about taking photos of something that surrounds the lake. We must listen carefully to the person (the lady) detailing about the excursion. Let’s listen to the recording.

As you listen to the last part of this clip, the lady (the excursion information provider) says, “…. . .. And don’t forget to take pictures of the mountains . They’re all around you when you’re on the boat and they look fantastic.”

Here, take pictures matches with take photos in the question. Also, They’re all around you when you’re on the boat = surround the lake in the question.

So, the answer is: mountains

Question no. 2:

  • Visit can include a 40-minute ride on a __________

Here, our KEYWORDS are 40-minute ride on , which means we need to find information about any transport which is used for the 40-minute ride. Let’s listen to the recording:

Listen to the last half part of the clip where you’ll hear the lady talking about the 40-minute ride. She says, “.. .. .. Well, there’s also a 40-minute trek round the farm on a horse , if he wants. .. ..”

Here, 40-minute trek means 40-minute ride and the ride is on a horse .

So, the answer is: horse

Question no. 3:

  • Visitors can walk in the farm’s ________ by the lake

Here, our KEYWORDS are walk in , farm’s and by the lake , which means we need to listen to the lady if she talks about an area inside the farm where visitors can walk around. The area is by or beside the lake. Ok? Let’s listen to the recording:

Again, if you listen to the last half of the clip, the lady talks about a place that is situated by the side of the lake where visitors can walk. “.. .. There are some very beautiful gardens along the side of the lake which also belong to the farm – they’ll be just at their best now. You could easily spend an hour or two there . ”

Here, along the side of the lake = by the lake, belong to the farm = farm’s, You could easily spend an hour or two there = Visitors can walk in ,

So, the answer is: gardens

Question no. 4:

  • _________ is available at extra cost

Here, our KEYWORDS are available and extra cost . So, we need to find information about any service that is available during the cruise or farm visit that is not included in the basic service price but can be acquired if people pay extra for that. Let’s listen to the recording:

In the clip, the gentleman asks, “And can we get lunch there?” The lady replies, “ You can , and it’s very good, though it’s not included in the basic cost . You pay when you get there.”

Here, You can means the lunch is available, though it’s not included in the basic cost means extra cost .

So, the answer is: lunch

This is the end of the first part of Listening Section 1. Now, you are given 30 seconds to check your answers.

TIP: You shouldn’t spend the time checking the answers now. You have 10 minutes at the end of the test to write the answers in the answer sheet. You can check the answers that time.

Now, you should read ahead questions 5-10.

IELTS Listening: Cambridge 12 Academic Test 5; Listening Section 1; Family Excursions; with recordings, solutions, tips and best explanations

(I’ve marked the KEYWORDS with a yellow marker to help you understand better; don’t do that in the exam, YOU MUST USE A PENCIL. And don’t take more than 30 seconds to read this part of the question.)

Now, let’s listen to each part of the recording and find the answer for questions 5-10.

Question no. 5:

  • Cyclists explore the Back Road
  • A _______ is provided

Here, our KEYWORDS are, Cyclists explore , Back Road , and provided . This means we need to listen to the recording for something that is provided (given to the cyclists which they can use to explore the Back Road). Let’s listen to the recording:

In this clip the lady talks about the Cycling trips. She says, “. . . . and then go on a cycling trip . There’s a trail there called the Back Road – you could easily spend three or four hours exploring it, and the scenery’s wonderful. They’ll give you a map when you get your ticket for the cruise – there’s no extra charge.”

Here, cycling trip means the trip where Cyclists explore , give means provided ,

So, the answer is: map

Question no. 6:

  • Only suitable for cyclists who have some _________

For this question, we need to listen to something (some sort of skills or experience perhaps) that cyclists need. (You can guess this answer and check whether your guess is correct or not; if not correct, don’t be upset; guessing will come to you gradually.) Let’s listen to this recording:

Here, in this clip, the man asks about the difficulty of the 40-minute cycle trip. The lady answers, “ . . .Quite challenging in places. It wouldn’t be suitable for your seven-year-old. It needs someone who’s got a bit more experience . ”

Here, It needs someone = Only suitable for ,

So, the answer is: experience

Question no. 7:

  • – bikes can be hired from ____________ ( near the Cruise Ship Terminal )

The question asks us to find out the name of the place from where bikes can be hired. Let’s listen to the recording:

In this clip, the man asks if he could hire a bike from any place. The lady replies, “Yes, there’s a place in the city. It’s called Ratchesons .” The man then asks her to spell it and the lady spells the name for him, “ R-A-T-C-H-E-S-O-N-S . It’s just by the Cruise Ship Terminal.”

So, the answer is: Ratchesons

Question no. 8:

  • Cyclists need:
  • a repair kit
  • food and drink
  • a ________ ( can be hired )

Our KEYWORDS for this question are a repair kit , food and drink and can be hired . This means we will find the answer just after the lady mentions a repair kit and food and drink. Let’s listen to the recording:

In this clip, when the lady mentions that the man needs to take a repair kit and food (snack) and drink (water) for the ride, the man asks, “And I assume I can rent a helmet from the bike place?” The lady replied positively .

Therefore, along with the repair kit and food and drink, the man also needs to hire (rent) helmet .

So, the answer is: helmet

Question no. 9:

  • – There are no _________ or accommodation in the area.

The question indicates that there are two matters/things which are not available in this area. One of them is accommodation . We need to listen for the other. Let’s listen:

Here, in this clip, the lady says, “ .. . It’s a great ride but you want to be well prepared because it’s very remote – you won’t see any shops round there, or anywhere to stay ,  .. .. ..”

Here, won’t see = no , stay = accommodation ,

So, the answer is: shops

Question no. 10:

  • Total cost for whole family of cruise and farm visit : $ ________

The question asks us to listen to the recording and find out the total cost for the cruise and farm visit for the man, his wife and his son (child) and daughter (adult) . Let’s listen to the recording carefully and count the amount of money to be paid:

Ok, here’s the problem We hear the lady mentioning the amount of money 5 times. So? Which one is the correct answer.

First She says, “Let’s see, that’d be one adult and one child for the cruise with farm tour, that’s $117 , and an adult and a child for the cruise only so that’s $214 dollars altogether. Oh, wait a minute; how old did you say your daughter was?”

This means she had mistaken his daughter as a child and included her cost as a child’s cost. When she learns that the daughter is 15, she says, “Then I’m afraid it’s $267 because she has to pay the adult fare, which is $75 instead of the child fare which is $22 – sorry about that.”

So, the answer is: 267

Special Tips:

1. be careful about capital letters/ block letters for proper nouns. in this section, the word ‘ratchesons’ is a proper noun; so the word must be written with a capital letter in the beginning. otherwise, your answer will be wrong. 2. be careful about the dollar ($) or pound (£) sign or symbol. if it’s included in the question paper, you can’t write it as your answer. here, in this question, the sign is already on the question paper. so, the answer will be the number only..

Family Excursions Listening Answers: Explanation

Explanation:

The woman told the man not to forget to click pictures of the  mountains  surrounded by the lake.

The man asked what activities his children could do. The woman replied that there were animals they could feed and also do a 14-minute trek on the  horse .

The woman told the man there was a very beautiful garden along the side of the lake that belonged to the farm only.

The man asks the woman if  lunch is available at the farm, to which the woman replies that it is, but it is not included in the cost, so they need to pay for it.

The woman told the man they would get a  map for the cruise when they arrived.

The man asks if there is something else they could do on the trek, to which the woman replies that they can go cycling at a place called the back road. However, she said it is suitable for a bit more  experienced people and will not be suitable for his 7-year-old kid.

The woman tells the man that there is a place in the city called  Ratchesons , just by the cruise ship terminal, where he and his daughter can rent a bicycle and cycle on the back road.

The man asked if he could rent a  helmet as well, and the woman said that yes, he could.

The woman told the man that there would not be any  shops  around the back road as it is a very remote place, so he needed to be well prepared with everything before going cycling.

The man asks for the prices for the cruise, to which the woman says that it will cost  $267 as his daughter is 15 and needs to pay the adult fare, which is $75, instead of the child fare, which is $22.

#1 Family Excursions Transcript

The Part 1 audio script of the Family Excursions listening answers in Listening Test 5 is as follows:

TC EMPLOYEE:   Hi. Can I help you?

VISITOR:              I’d like to find out if you have any excursions suitable for families.

TC EMPLOYEE:   Sure. How about taking your family for a cruise?  We have a steamship that takes passengers out several times a day  (Example)  – it’s over 100 years old.

VISITOR:              That sounds interesting. How long is the trip?

TC EMPLOYEE:   About an hour and a half.  And don’t forget to take pictures of the mountains   (Q1) . They’re all around you when you’re on the boat and they look fantastic.

VISITOR:              OK. And I assume there’s a café or something on board?

TC EMPLOYEE:   Sure. How old are your children?

VISITOR:              Er, my daughter’s fifteen and my son’s seven.

TC EMPLOYEE:   Right. Well there are various things you can do once you’ve crossed the lake, to make a day of it. One thing that’s very popular is a visit to the Country Farm. You’re met off the boat by the farmer and he’ll take you to the holding pens, where the sheep are kept. Children love feeling them!

VISITOR:              My son would love that. He really likes animals.

TC EMPLOYEE:   Well,  there’s also a 40-minute trek round the farm on a house   (Q2) , if he wants.

VISITOR:              Do you think he’d manage it? He hasn’t done that before.

TC EMPLOYEE:   Sure. It’s suitable for complete beginners.

VISITOR:              Ah, good.

TC EMPLOYEE:   And again, visitors are welcome to explore the farm on their own, as long as they take care to close gates and so on.  There are some very beautiful gardens along the side of the lake which also belong to the farm  (Q3)  – they’ll be just at their best now. You could easily spend an hour or two there.

VISITOR:              OK. Well that all sounds good.  And can we get lunch there ?  (Q4)

TC EMPLOYEE:    You can, and it’s very good, though it’s not included in the basic cost. You pay when you get there.

VISITOR:              Right.

VISITOR:              So is there anything else to do over on that side of the lake?

TC EMPLOYEE:   Well, what you can do is take a bike over on the ship and then go on a cycling trip. There’s a trail there called the Back Road – you could easily spend three or four hours exploring it, and the scenery’s wonderful.  They’ll give you a map when you get your ticket for the cruise – there’s no extra charge .  (Q5)

VISITOR:              What’s the trail like in terms of difficulty?

TC EMPLOYEE:   Quite challenging in places. It wouldn’t be suitable for your seven-year-old.  It needs someone who’s got a bit more experience .  (Q6)

VISITOR:              Hmm. Well, my daughter loves cycling and so do I, so maybe the two of us could go, and my wife and son could stay on the farm. That might work out quite well. But we don’t have bikes here… is there somewhere we could rent them?

TC EMPLOYEE:   Yes, there’s a place here in the city.  It’s called Ratchesons .  (Q7)

VISITOR:              I’ll just make a note of that – er, how do you spell it?

TC EMPLOYEE:   R-A-T-C-H-E-S-O-N-S. It’s just be the cruise ship terminal.

VISITOR:              OK.

TC EMPLOYEE:   You’d also need to pick up a repair kit for the bike from there to take along with you, and you’d need to take along a snack and some water – it’d be best to get those in the city.

VISITOR:              Fine. That shouldn’t be a problem.  And I assume I can rent a helmet from the bike place ?  (Q8)

TC EMPLOYEE:    Sure, you should definitely get that . It’s a great ride, but you want to be well prepared because  it’s very remote – you won’t see any shops round there, or anywhere to stay  (Q9) , so you need to get back in time for the last boat.

VISITOR:              Yeah. So what sort of prices are we looking at here?

TC EMPLOYEE:   Let’s see, that’d be one adult and one child for the cruise with farm tour, that’s $117, and an adult and a child for the cruise only so that’s $214 dollars altogether. Oh, wait a minute, how old did you say your daughter was?

VISITOR:              Fifteen.

TC EMPLOYEE:   Then I’m afraid  it’s $267  (Q10)  because she has to pay the adult fare, which is $75 instead of the child fare which is $22 – sorry about that.

VISITOR:              That’s OK. Er, so how do …

#2 Talk to new kitchen assistants Transcript

The Part 2 audio transcript of Talk to new kitchen assistants in Cambridge 12 Listening Test 5 is as follows:

Good morning everyone. My name’s Joy Parkins and I’m the restaurant manager. And I understand that none of you’ve had any previous experience as kitchen assistants? Well, you might be feeling a bit nervous now, but most of our kitchen assistants say they enjoy the work. OK, they might get shouted at sometimes, but it’s nothing personal, and  they’re pleased that they have so many different things to do, which means they never get bored  (Q11) . And I’ll tell you straightaway that if you do well, we might think about moving you up and giving you some more responsibility.

Right, well, you’ve all shown up on time, which is an excellent start. Now I’m glad to see none of you have unsuitable footwear, so that’s good – you need to be careful as the floors can get very wet and slippery. Those of you with long hair have got it well out of the way,  but some of you’ll need to remove your rings and bracelets – just put them somewhere safe for today, and remember to leave them at home tomorrow, as they can be a safety hazard .  (Q12)

Now it’s going to be a busy day for you all today – we don’t have any tables free for this evening, and only a few for lunch  (Q13) . Fortunately we’ve got our Head Chef back – he was away on holiday all last week which meant the other chefs had extra work. Now, I’ll tell you a bit more about the job in a minute but first, some general regulations.

For all of you, whatever your age, there’s some equipment you mustn’t use until you’ve been properly trained, like the waste disposal system for example, for health and safety reasons.  Then I think there are two of you here who are under 18 – that’s Emma and Jake, isn’t it? Right, so for you two, the meat slicer is out of bounds  (Q14) . And of course none of you are allowed to use the electric mixer until you’ve been shown how it works.

Now you may have heard that this can be a stressful job, and I have to say that can be true. You’ll be working an eight-hour day for the first week, though you’ll have the chance to do overtime after that as well if you want to. But however long the hours are, you’ll get a break in the middle.

What you will find is that you’re on your feet all day long, lifting and carrying, so if you’re not fit now you soon will be! You’ll find you don’t have much chance to take it easy – when someone tells you to do something you need to do it straightaway  (Q15&Q16)  – but at least we do have a very efficient air conditioning system compared with some kitchens.

Now let me tell you about some of the people you need to know. So as I said,  I’m Joy Parkins and I decide who does what during the day and how long they work for  (Q17) . I’ll be trying to get you to work with as many different people in the kitchen as possible, so that you learn while you’re on the job.

One person whose name you must remember is David Field. If you injure yourself at all, even if it’s really minor, you must report to him and he’ll make sure the incident is recorded and you get the appropriate treatment  (Q18) .

He’s trained to give basic treatment to staff himself, or he’ll send you off somewhere else if necessary.  Then there’s Dexter Wills – he’s the person you need to see if you smash a plate or something like that  (Q19) . Don’t just leave it and hope no one will notice – it’s really important to get things noted and replaced or there could be problems late.

And finally, there’s Mike Smith. He’s the member of staff who takes care of all the stores of perishables, so if you notice we’re getting low in flour or sugar or something, make sure you let him know so he can put in an order .  (Q20)

OK, now the next thing …

#3 Paper on Public libraries Transcript

The Part 3 audio transcript of Paper on Public libraries in Cambridge 12 Listening Test 5 is as follows:

TRUDIE:               OK, Stewart. We need to start planning our paper on public libraries. Have you thought of an angle yet?

STEWART:           Well, there’s so much we could look into. How libraries have changed over the centuries, for instance, or how different countries organise them. What do you think, Trudie?

TRUDIE:                Maybe we should concentrate on this country, and try relate the changes in libraries to external developments, like the fact that far more people can read than a century ago, and that the local population may speak lots of different languages .  (Q21)

STEWART:           We could include something about changes in the source of funding, too.

TRUDIE:               Yes, but remember we’re only supposed to write a short paper, so it’s probably best if we don’t go into funding in any detail.

STEWART:           Right. Well, shall we just brainstorm a few ideas, to get started?

TRUDIE:               OK. We obviously need to look at the impact of new technology, particularly the internet. Now that lots of books have been digitalised, people can access them from their own computers at home.

STEWART:           And if everyone did that, libraries would be obsolete.

TRUDIE:               Yes.

STEWART:            But the digitalised books that are available online for free are mostly out of copyright, aren’t they? And copyright in this country lasts for 70 years after the author dies. So you won’t find the latest best-seller or up-to-date information .  (Q22)

TRUDIE:                That’s an important point . Anyway, I find it hard to concentrate when I’m reading a long text on a green. I’d much rather read a physical book. And it takes longer to read on a screen.

STEWART:           Oh, I prefer it. I suppose it’s just a personal preference.

TRUDIE:               Mm. I expect that libraries will go on evolving in the next few years. Some have already become centres where community activities take place, like local clubs meeting there. I think that’ll become even more common.

STEWART:           I’d like to think so, and that they’ll still be serving their traditional function, but I’m not so sure. There are financial implications, after all.  What I’m afraid will happen is that books and magazines will all disappear, and there’ll just be rows and rows of computers  (Q23) . They won’t look anything like the libraries we’re used to.

TRUDIE:               Well, we’ll see.

———————–

TRUDIE:               I’ve just had an idea. Why don’t we make an in-depth study of our local public library as background to our paper?

STEWART:           Yes, that’d be interesting, and raise all sorts of issues. Let’s make a list of possible things we could ask about, then work out some sort of structure.  For instance, um, we could interview some of the staff, and find out whether the library has its own budget, or if that’s controlled by the local council .  (Q24)

TRUDIE:               And what their policies are. I know they don’t allow food, but I’d love to find out what types of noise they ban – there always seems to be a lot of talking, but never music. I don’t know if that’s a policy or it just happens.

STEWART:           Ah, I’ve often wondered.  Then there are things like how the library is affected by employment laws. I suppose there are rules about working hours, facilities for staff, and so on .  (Q25)

TRUDIE:               Right.  Then there are other issues relating to the design of the building and how customers use it . Like what measures does the library take to ensure their safety?   (Q26)  They’d need floor coverings that aren’t slippery, and emergency exits, for instance. Oh, and another thing –  there’s the question of the kind of insurance the library needs to have, in case anyone gets injured .  (Q27)

STEWART:           Yes, that’s something else to find out. You know something I’ve often wondered?

TRUDIE:               What’s that?

STEWART:           Well, you know they’ve got an archive of local newspapers going back years? Well,  next to it they’ve got the diary of a well-known politician from the late 19th century   (Q28) . I wonder why it’s there. Do you know what his connection was with this area?

TRUDIE:               No idea. Let’s add it to our list of things to find out. Oh, I’ve just thought –  you know people might ask in the library about local organisations, like sports clubs? Well, I wonder if they keep a database, or whether they just look online .  (Q29)

STEWART:           Right.  I quite fancy finding out what the differences are between a library that’s open to the public and one that’s part of a museum, for example   (Q30)  – they must be very different.

TRUDIE:               Mmm. Then something else I’d like to know is …

#4 Four business values Transcript

The Part 4 audio script of Four business values in Listening Test 5 is as follows:

In public discussion of business, we take certain values for granted. Today I’m going to talk about four of them: collaboration, hard work, creativity and excellence. Most people would say they’re all ‘good things’. I’m going to suggest that’s an over-simple view.

The trouble with these values is that they’re theoretical concepts, removed from the reality of day-to-day business.  Pursue values by all means, but be prepared for what may happen as a result. They can actually cause damage, which is not at all the intention .  (Q31)

Business leaders generally try to do the right thing. But  all too often the right thing backfires, if those leaders adopt values without understanding and managing the side effects that arise  (Q32) . The values can easily get in the way of what’s actually intended.

OK. So the first value I’m going to discuss is collaboration. Er, let me give you an example.  On a management training course I once attended, we were put into groups and had to construct a bridge across a stream  (Q33) , using building blocks that we were given. The rule was that everyone in the team had to move at least one building block during the construction. This was intended to encourage teamwork.

But it was really a job best done by one person.  The other teams tried to collaborate on building the structure, and descended into confusion  (Q34) , with everyone getting in each other’s way. Our team leader solved the challenge brilliantly. She simply asked everyone in the team to move a piece a few centimetres, to comply with the rule, and then let the person in the team with an aptitude for puzzles like this build it alone. We finished before any other team. My point is that the task wasn’t really suited to teamworking, so why make it one?

Teamwork can also lead to inconsistency – a common cause of poor sales.  In the case of a smartphone that a certain company launched, one director wanted to target the business market, and another demanded it was aimed at consumers. The company wanted both directors to be involved, so gave the product a consumer-friendly name, but marketed it to companies. The result was that it met the needs of neither group. It would have been better to let one director or the other have his way, not both .  (Q35)

Now industriousness, or hard work. It’s easy to mock people who say they work hard: after all, a hamster running around in a wheel is working hard – and getting nowhere. Of course  hard work is valuable, but only when properly targeted. Otherwise it wastes the resources that companies value most – time and energy. And that’s bad for the organisation .  (Q36)

There’s a management model that groups people according to four criteria: clever, hard-working, stupid and lazy.  Here ‘lazy’ means having a rational determination not to carry out unnecessary tasks  (Q37) . It doesn’t mean trying to avoid work altogether. Most people display two of these characteristics, and the most valuable people are those who are both clever and lazy: they possess intellectual clarity, and they don’t rush into making decisions.

They come up with solutions to save the time and energy spent by the stupid and hard-working group. Instead of throwing more man-hours at a problem, the clever and lazy group looks for a more effective solution.

Next we come to creativity. This often works well – creating an attention-grabbing TV commercial, for example, might lead to increased sales. But it isn’t always a good thing. Some advertising campaigns are remembered for their creativity, without having any effect on sales.  This happened a few years ago with the launch of a chocolate bar: subsequent research showed that plenty of consumers remembered the adverts, but had no idea what was being advertised  (Q38) . The trouble is that the creator derives pleasure from coming up with the idea, and wrongly assumes the audience for the campaign will share that feeling.

A company that brings out thousands of new products may seem more creative than a company that only has a few, but it may be too creative, and make smaller profits.  Creativity needs to be targeted, to solve a problem that the company has identified  (Q39) . Just coming up with more and more novel products isn’t necessarily a good thing.

And finally, excellence. We all know companies that claim they ‘strive for excellence’, but it takes a long time to achieve excellence. In business, being first with a product is more profitable than having the best product. A major study of company performance compared pioneers – that is, companies bringing out the first version of a particular product – with followers, the companies that copied and improved on that product.  The study found that the pioneers commanded an average market share of 29 percent, while the followers achieved less than half that, only 13 percent   (Q40)  – even though their product might have been better.

Insisting on excellence in everything we do is time-consuming, wastes energy and leads to losing out on opportunities. Sometimes, second-rate work is more worthwhile than excellence. ‘Make sure it’s excellent’ sounds like a good approach to business, but the ‘just-get-started’ approach is likely to be more successful.

c.    is taller than the father.

d.    prefers to play cards.

e.    hates flying.

f.    isn’t interested in music.

Both of my parents are taller than me. My dad is pretty tall, but my brother is even taller than my dad. Together they look like a basketball team! My sister and I are the short ones in the family.

My brother isn’t interested in music at all. He’s into cars, like my dad. But I’m not interested in cars. I play the guitar and the piano. I guess I love music because of my mom. She sings beautifully. She plays the piano really well, too.

I love animals. I have a dog and I keep a couple of parrots in a big cage in my room. I love taking photographs of wild birds when I’m in the countryside. My dad and I often go away for the weekend and we have a great time birdwatching. My sister thinks I’m crazy. When my sister has free time, she loves to play cards. I can’t stand card games.

I enjoy reading. I read a lot of books and I love going to the library. My dad likes outdoor things. He’s really into sports and swimming, and he always tells me I should get more interested in sports. But Mom tells me that reading is the best way to learn. She always gives me books that she’s been reading.

I’m very interested in computers. I’m always teaching myself new computer programs and I have a lot of great software. My brother and I spend all our free time in computer stores and on the Internet. My sister is more interested in the arts. She likes music and she loves to read. She hates computers!

I love traveling. My mother and I go to a different place every year. Both of us love to learn new things about cultures. My father never goes with us because he hates flying. My older sister is in college, so she stays home and studies while we’re away. Sometimes I wish my sister and my father would travel with us because I miss them.

IELTS LISTENING

FAMILY EXCURSIONS

TC EMPLOYEE: Hi. Can I help you?

VISITOR: I’d like to find out if you have any excursions suitable for families.

TC EMPLOYEE: Sure. How about taking your family for a cruise? Example We have a steamship that  takes passengers out several times a day  – it’s over 100 years old.

Attempt full listening test…

VISITOR: That sounds interesting. How long is the trip?

TC EMPLOYEE: About an hour and a half. Q 1 And don’t forget to take pictures of the mountains . They’re all around you when you’re on the boat and they look fantastic.

VISITOR: OK. And I assume there’s a cafe or something on board?

TC EMPLOYEE: Sure. How old are your children?

VISITOR: Er, my daughter’s fifteen, and my son’s seven.

TC EMPLOYEE: Right. Well, there are various things you can do once you’ve crossed the lake, to make a day of it. One thing that’s very popular is a visit to the Country Farm. You’re met off the boat by the farmer and he’ll take you to the holding pens, where the sheep are kept. Children love feeding them!

VISITOR: My son would love that. He really likes animals.

TC EMPLOYEE: Well, Q 2 there’s also a 40-minute trek round the farm on a horse , if he wants.

VISITOR: Do you think he’d manage it? He hasn’t done that before.

TC EMPLOYEE: Sure, It’s suitable for complete beginners.

VISITOR: Ah, good.

TC EMPLOYEE: And again, visitors are welcome to explore the farm on their own, as long as they take care to close dates and so on. Q 3 There are some very beautiful gardens along the side of the lake which also belong to the farm  – they’ll be just at their best now. You could easily spend an hour or two there.

VISITOR: OK. Well that all sounds good. Q 4 And can we get lunch there ?

TC EMPLOYEE: You can, and it’s very good. though it’s not included in the basic cost. You pay when you get there.

VISITOR: Right.

VISITOR: So is there anything else to do over on that side of the lake?

TC EMPLOYEE: Well, what you can do is take a bike over on the ship and then go on a cycling trip. There’s a trail there called the Back Road – you could easily spend three or four hours exploring it. and the scenery’s wonderful. Q 5 They’ll give you a map when you get your ticket for the cruise – there’s no extra charge .

VISITOR: What’s the trail like in terms of difficulty?

TC EMPLOYEE: Quite challenging in places. It wouldn’t be suitable for your seven-year-old. Q 6 It needs someone who’s got a bit more experience .

Q 7 It’s called Ratchesons .

VISITOR: I’ll just make a note of that – er, how do you spell it?

TC EMPLOYEE: R-A-T-C-H-E-S-O-N-S. It’s just by the cruise ship terminal.

VISITOR: OK.

TC EMPLOYEE: You’d also need to pick up a repair kit for the bike from there to take along with you, and you’d need to take along a snack and some water – it’d be best to get those in the city.

VISITOR: Fine. That shouldn’t be a problem. And Q 8 I assume I can rent a helmet from the bike place ?

TC EMPLOYEE: Sure, you should definitely get that. It’s a great ride, but you want to be well prepared because Q 9 it’s very remote – you won’t see get shops round there, or anywhere to stay , so you need to get back in time for the last boat.

TC EMPLOYEE: Then I’m afraid Q 10 it’s $267  because she has to pay the adult fare, which is $75 instead of the child fare which is $22 – sorry about that.

VISITOR: That’s OK. Er, so how do …

Fun Things for Kids in Moscow

Fun for kids in Moscow

What are the best things to do with children in Moscow?

  • Summer: Futuristic parks, river boats and ice caves are perfect attractions for when the temperatures rise above 30.
  • Museums: Russians are very proud of their history, which means that their museums are kept to a world-class standard. Both parents and children alike will be sure to learn something new at one of the many, often unique museums in Moscow.
  • Culture: From the world’s oldest puppet theatre to UNESCO-listed whimsical, wooden palaces there’ll be plenty to treat your little prince or princess to.
  • Winter: New Year is arguably the most magical time to visit Moscow, especially for children. The ice rinks throughout the city, Christmas markets and the magnificent ice-sculpture festival truly make Moscow a winter wonderland.

Moscow truly is a mega-metropolis like no other. Its non-stop energy and sheer unorthodoxy is sure to enthuse any child with its rebellious, east-meets-west spirit. Just walking down Old Arabat Street— where ancient wooden storehouses are squashed against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by blingy high-rises— is sure to appeal to the childish disdain of all things orderly and conventional. Apart from the main sites, there’s a whole host of family-friendly activities in Moscow from the very traditional to the uber, high-tech that will keep your kids entertained.

For Summer Scorchers:

Fun for kids - Summer VDNKh

Photo by  Jamie Taylor  on  Unsplash

VDNKh  is Russia’s version of Disneyland and, to be honest, we think it trumps that tacky theme park by a mile. First things first is its size. At almost 600 acres, this Soviet park has everything; from space museums to soviet shopping outlets to equestrian centers to beaches. In fact, there’s so much to do that there really is no way to cover it all in one day. Our favorite attractions include the ROBO station, the super-cool playgrounds near the aquarium and the world’s biggest ice rink in winter. Better rent out scooters or bikes as well if you plan on seeing at least a fraction of this green gem.

Address: Prospekt Mira, 119 Nearest metro station: VDNKh

Unlike VDNKh, you won’t have to travel far from the centre to seek the lovely lush lawns of  Gorky Park . Come early so that you can grab a beanbag or hammock for yourself while your children have some fun on the colorful playground rides or play ping-pong under the trees. At teatime, head over to the traditional Russian tea house for a brew from a giant samovar. It’s worth staying on for the whole day until dusk when the roof of the park’s planetarium slides open to reveal the wonders of the sky.

Address: Krymsky Val, 9 Nearest metro station:   Park Kultury

Zaradye Park

Moscow’s brand-new  Zaradye Park  couldn’t be more different from the stern, red brick of the Kremlin that towers over it. Whichever way you look, you’ll be rubbing your eyes to make sure that this other-worldly landscape of floating glass bridges, underground ancient walkways, Siberian tundra and ice caves really does exist. For children, this wild-urban project is the perfect place for them to let some steam off during a day of sightseeing. Thanks to the unbelievable glass-paneled roof that keeps warm air in and the rain out, the lawns are perfect for lounging on all year round.

Address: Varvarka street, 6 Nearest metro station:  Kitay-gorod

There’s a never-ending stream of tour boats bobbing up and down the Moskva River to hop on to when those little legs have had enough of walking. But for those who’d like something a little special, nothing beats the Radisson yacht. Champagne, on-board dining and floor to ceiling windows make it the most stylish way to cruise round Moscow.

Address: Naberezhnaya Tarasa Shevchenko, Moscow (next to teh Radisson Blue hotel) Nearest metro station:  Studencheskaya

For Little Einsteins:

Fun for kids - little einsteins

Photo by  Robo Wunderkind  on  Unsplash

Museum of Cosmonauts

This is THE museum to go to if you happen to have a Star Wars fan with you. Unlike in countless planetariums around the world where gimmicky models of the solar system and dramatic movies make for a hollow experience, here you get the real thing. There’s a life-size model of the Russian space station, chunks of the moon, a space toilet, the actual Sputnik, heck, even Belka & Strelka, the space dogs, are there standing next to the very space shuttle they flew into space with  (never fear, they were stuffed only after they died of old age).  *For extreme fanatics, it’s worth noting you can arrange a tour to Star City, the astronaut training centre that is still in use outside of Moscow.

Address: Prospekt Mira, 111 Nearest metro station:   VDNKh, Vystavochny tsentr

Darwin Museum

The first museum in the world devoted to explaining the most important concept of biology definitely deserves a visit. Its menagerie of nearly half a million stuffed animals illustrate the steady process of evolution and the many now extinct animals it boasts like the Dodo serve as a warning bell for what the age of mass-industrialization might bring. Despite its name, the  Darwin museum isn’t at all quaint or old-fashioned with plenty of interactive displays and microscopes for children to engage with.

Address: Ulitsa Vavilova, 57 Nearest metro station:   Akademicheskaya

Orlov Museum of Paleontology

This museum could easily compete with the famed Natural History Museum in London. In fact, its extensive exhibit of ginormous skeletons from all sorts of beasts from sloths to diplodocuses might even be more impressive than London’s. After all, Russia is an awful lot bigger than England and probably has lot more giants slumbering away in the depths of its forests just waiting to be dug up!

Address: Ulitsa Profsoyuznaya, 123 Nearest metro station: Kon'kovo

The Experimentanium

There’s lots of fun to be had at this fully hands-on science museum. It’s absolutely perfect for little toddlers and mischievous boys alike because nothing’s off bounds—the whole place is a playground (with a lot of science snuck in!). And don’t worry, most of the descriptions are in English so they’ll definitely learn something along the way.

Address: Leningradsky prospekt, 80/11 Nearest metro station:   Sokol

For Boisterous Boys & Girls:

Fun for kids - Moscow city

Photo by  Alexandr Popadin  on  Unsplash

Moscow City

The second tallest, the third tallest, the fourth tallest and the sixth and seventh tallest buildings in Europe can all be found within a few meters of each other in the financial district, Moscow city. Apart from breaking their necks trying to gape at all the quirky high-rises, your kids can get a thrill by going up to the 54th floor of Ostankino TV Tower to its awe-inspiring panoramic viewing platform with a drop-down, glass floor!

Address:   Presnenskaya Naberezhnaya Nearest metro station:   Delovoy tsentr, Mezhdunarodnaya, Vystavochnaya

A trip down to this veritable villain’s lair is certainly worth it with children, not least because it’s 18 stories underground…. AND the only way back up is by the stairs making it the perfect recipe for a peaceful afternoon. Apart from tiring out children, Bunker 42 has the distinction of being a genuine nuclear bunker. It was intended to be the hide-away of the USSR’s top dogs in the case of nuclear war and the staff here do such an excellent job of recreating the tense atmosphere that we hazard against taking softer children here. Everything, from the actual computer with the big red button which would have been used to start WW3 to the KGB’s rooms, have been preserved exactly as they were at the height of the cold war.

*Entrance only with group tours which can be arranged in English.

Address: 5th Kotel'nicheskiy Pereulok, 11 Nearest metro station:  Taganskaya

Central Armed Forces Museum

Though there isn’t much English in this museum dedicated to all things sickle and hammer (i.e. the Red Army), the genuine American U2 spy plane it has on show and the opportunity to hold real (but thankfully, not loaded!) guns make it a real treasure trove for army-mad kids.

Address: Ulitsa Sovetskoy Armii, 2 Nearest metro station:  Dostoevskaya

Victory Museum

You don’t actually need to step a foot in this museum dedicated entirely to WW2 to please your wannabe soldiers. Just sit down on a bench as your kids jump on and off the airplanes, tanks, armored vehicles and every other killing machine imaginable that are free to explore outside this museum.

Address: Ploshchad' Pobedy, 3 Nearest metro station:   Park Pobedy

Armory Chamber

Part of the Kremlin complex, the Armory Chamber’s incredibly diverse displays—spanning folk art to silverware to coronation dresses— cover almost every era of Russia’s royal history. The wedding carriages and ceremonial arms are particularly well-loved by children.

Address: The Moscow Kremlin Nearest metro station:  Biblioteka imeni Lenina

For Little Princes & Princesses:

Fun for kids - Puppet theater

Photo by  Ralph Lindner  from  Pixabay

Moscow State Puppet Theatre

The oldest puppet theatre in Moscow is also the largest in the world. Its wide-ranging repertoire has shows for tiny tots up to adult-only shows. Its fairytale clock, from which mythical creatures spring out, will be the cherry on top of a magical visit to this dear theatre.

Address: Pestovskiy Pereulok, 2/1 Nearest metro station:   Marksistskaya

Central Kids Store on Lubyanka

This seven-story department store devoted entirely to little people boasts the biggest Hamleys in the world, the biggest time keeping mechanism and one of the best viewing platforms in Moscow. In other words, it’s kiddy heaven. The building itself is also rather noteworthy, dating back to 1953. Its stained murals and colorful tiles give it an old-world (soviet) charm.

Address: Teatral'nyy Proyezd, 5 Nearest metro station:   Lubyanka, Kuznetsky Most

Izmailovsky Park

This is possibly the world’s only Slavic theme park. Just joking, but just be warned this recreated Russian village with mini-museums, bakeries and a market is a teensy bit kitsch. If your children are artsy, then why not let them make their own matryoshka at a masterclass instead of buying one at the market. And while the kiddies busy themselves with the business of covering every square inch of their clothes in paint, there’s plenty for parents to peruse; like the vodka museum or the pleasantly, rolling park land.

Address: Alleya Bol'shogo Kruga, 7 Nearest metro station:  Sokolinaya gora

Kolomenskoye Park

Ivan the Terrible’s summer retreat isn’t at all as gloomy as you’d expect, indeed some might say it’s actually a bit too colorful. In our opinion, its postcard-perfect; with petite trains chugging through the acres of apple orchards, a pearl-white 16th century, UNESCO-listed church and a magnificently vibrant, 300 year old wooden palace. Take your children on a trip back in time, they’ll be delighted - we promise.

Address: Andropova Ave, 39 Nearest metro station:  Kolomenskaya

For Petrol Heads:

Fun for kids - rail museum

Photo by  Dimitris Vetsikas  from  Pixabay

Moscow Rizhsky Railway Station

If you don’t have time to take your children on the Trans-Siberian, then a ride on a Soviet steam train is a superb alternative. The beauty of chugging through the outskirts of Moscow on a train with a red star on its gleaming, coal-black engine will definitely make Harry Potter fans squeal with excitement. Adults will appreciate the cups of tea served in old-style soviet mugs specifically made for train journeys. If you’d like to explore the rail museum after the trip (we highly recommend it), be prepared for the weather as the whole exhibition is uncovered.

Address:  Rizhskaya Ploshad, 1 Nearest metro station:  Rizhskaya

Moscow Metro Museum

After taking your children on the Moscow metro (which you simply must!), chances are they’ll bombard you with all sorts of questions a parent isn’t equipped to answer; like “How fast do the trains go?” and “Who drives them?”. Never fear, Moscow’s metro actually has a free museum which will answer all these questions, as well as even allowing kids to take a seat in the driver’s seat for a virtual ride down the tunnels.

Address: Presnenskaya Naberezhnaya, 2 Nearest metro station:   Vystavochnaya

For White Winter Days:

Fun for kids - White Winter days

Photo by  Mihály Köles  on  Unsplash

Moscow Ice Festival

Each winter in Park Pobedy, blocks of ice are towed in from Russia’s great lakes to be chiseled away into masterpieces. Children will be delighted to find that they can even clamber upon some of these unbelievably big artworks. But the favorite by far, are super slippery ice slides.

*Just beware of wet bums— waterproofs are a must.

Learn more about winter activities is Moscow .

Address: Park Pobedy on Poklonnaya Hill Nearest metro station:   Park Pobedy

Ice-skating

There are almost 1500 ice-skating rinks in Moscow alone. It’s almost as if every open plot of land has water poured over it; even Red Square is transformed into a mega rink! The park VDNKh boasts the biggest in the world, but there’s also an awesome rooftop ice rink at ArtPlay. Wherever you take your children, you can’t go wrong with a bit of skating.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!
