Madagascar Baobabs & Beyond

We toured with Patrick who was wonderful! Fully informed and super nice. We truly saw as much as we could see in the time we had. Unfortunately the roads are terrible in Madagascar (of no fault to Intrepid) which makes for long periods of travel time. They did their best with crappy roads to show us enough of the country to get a good idea of what it's about. I was a single travelling woman who felt safe and comfortable the whole time with a great group of people. I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone. Just do research on the country before you go so you know what to expect in terms of comfort.

Incredible tour experience with an amazing sight. We kind of planned world tour, we started with Madagascar throught HT Agency Tours for 5 days adventure to the western part to see especially Tsingy Bemara, it was incredibly amazing and adventurious. We were in touch with Garcihel who customized our program, he responded promptly at any time. Angelin was our tour guide, the atmosphere was totally different from the point he picked us up, he animated the group and always found things to surprise us, he is knowledgable. The visit corresponded to what we really wanted to discover. Thank you to the team for making this trip an unforgettable experience.

Madagascar 9 Days Baobabs and Lemurs Tour

We really enjoyed the tour. Good mix of wildlife trips, driving and stop offs to see different areas of the island. Hotels were comfortable and couple of them were very nice! All well organised and our guide Roger was friendly and knowledgeable as we travelled around and also on the trips/activities Alex at Fosa Travel also very responsive to any questions and helpful as we added a few days to the standard itinerary. No issues between Alex and Roger switching one of the nights midway through the tour as well. Thanks both, we very much enjoyed it! :) Penny and Alex

Just had trip with this tour operator over dec 2021, it was amazing!!! We almost gave up and canceled our booking as our flight with air austral was delayed twice, but we did it smoothly. Madagascar is the 43rd country we visited, it was literally pleasant. We booked the classic tour program, unfortunately our arrival date, due to the delay, in addition the 48h quarantine at the hotel messed up completely the program, especially the domestic flight because seemingly there are only two flights a week that connect tulear and antananarivo which is supposed to be on the last day. The agency had to reorganize the tour by starting the program from the last point, we approved the idea as it suits to the domestic flight schedule. After being released from the quarantine we flew to tulear, it was so pleasant to start the journey with relaxing on the beach. We left tulear the next day and made the rest of the trip « mora mora », the first malagasy word we learned from our guide (Solofo). He was funny and knowledgeable; there was a lot of drives but we made it safely. Regarding the country, madagascar is a magnificent country, the landscape changes like every hour from one point to one another, the history, the culture, the fauna we were amazed. Also, we would be happy to share: PCR test is mandatory on arrival which costs 30USD, then the hotel we have booked for quarantine is the only allowed to be in charge of pick up at the airport. The quarantine is about 24 to 48hours, released after receiving negative test result. Before leaving the Madagascar, PCR test or Antigen test (a rapid test) is also obligatory but depending on the requirements of your country; this, until further notice. Hope that helps the future travelers. For us, everything was well organized by HT.

What people love about Madagascar Tours

Overall was a good tour ! Just read well ! You will not see the baobab avenue! There only 3 meals inc'ude in all the tour so its add on the budget !!! The restaureant we went were kind of expansive ! ( still ok for sure but if you were tight on a budget it male a big difference) Otherwise i really enjoy my tour and the time spend in the home stay this is the real higtlight of the tour for me ! The ceo was nice and the driver amazingly good we all feel really safe ! Most of the activity are walking tour ! So if you dont like to walk this is not for you ! But you will see a lot of lemurs! most hotels only have one power outlet so provide a double usb port. I loved my tour and can recommand it for sure !
The tour guide Patrick was outstanding. He went above and beyond his job. Always extremely helpful. He was not afraid to get his hands dirty when I needed him.. He took good care of his group and had a friendly and helpful attitude.

Keep an eye out for the Ring-tailed Lemurs in Madagascar's national parks

Isolated from Africa millions of years ago, Madagascar has evolved an incredibly rich ecology and a landscape that is as bizarre as it is unique. Home to one of the richest ecosystems on earth, the island is teeming with cartoon-quirky wildlife and nearly a quarter of all of Africa's flowering plants.

This thoroughly captivating destination is blessed with diverse natural beauty ranging from lush rainforests to arid rust-coloured landscapes and jagged limestone outcrops. The spirited Malagasy people are unfailingly polite and hospitable, with a rich culture that is as unique as the rest of the island.

Don your pack and boots and explore Madagascar's striking wilderness on foot, trek through the Bongolava Mountains and canoe down the stunning Manombolo River. See dramatic 'forests' of limestone pinnacles at the World Heritage Listed Tsingy de Bemaraha, witness one of Africa's most iconic sights at the Avenue of the Baobabs and enjoy the palm-fringed beaches and turquoise waters of dazzling Nosy Be.

Marvel at the island's diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife in its spectacular collection of national parks, including Isalo, Andringitra and Ranomafana, where you can practice your photography skills on tropical flowers, ancient trees, spirited lemurs and deadpan chameleons.

Join us as we explore the best of this fascinating treasure trove of exotic flora and fauna!

Leaders in responsible travel

Responsible travel practice is at the heart of our Madagascar adventures. Our trips provide a true wilderness experience by viewing wildlife in their natural habitat, supporting the conservation of rare fauna and flora and aiming to protect the natural environments and local communities.

Development of local communities

Our local partner assists families to develop their homes to cater to travellers. They then train the families in hospitality so that they are ready to welcome tourists into their homes and benefit from the income. Our itineraries are developed to utilise these homestays.

Protection of wildlife

Our forest trekking guides ensure that travellers stay quiet, walk in a single file line and do not leave the trail in order to minimise the disturbance of wildlife and to preserve the vegetation.

Habitat preservation

While we participate in reforestation projects, all guides are trained to preserve the native plants and trees.

In cities or large towns you will be accommodated in 3 star, twin share properties that are centrally located, comfortable and reliable.

We offer two styles of camping; fully supported and semi-participation. Both styles feature quality two person tents erected in scenic wilderness.

Permanent safari camps

Like a tented hotel room, this is the perfect way to experience the African wilderness. We use 3 star comfortable properties that reflect the character of the area.

Madagascar has two main seasons: a hot, wet season from November–April, and a cool, dry season from May–October. However, climate varies across the island based on elevation and proximity to trade winds/monsoon winds. The south is protected from moisture-bearing winds and remains arid, with the southwest in particular being almost desert-like.

Tropical cyclones are a major feature of Madagascar’s climate. Forming far out in the Indian Ocean, they bring heavy rains and destructive flooding to the east coast between December–March.

July is the coolest month, and December/January are the warmest months. Generally speaking, temperatures decrease with elevation, being coolest on the plateau and warmest on the northwest coast.

In Antananarivo, average daily temperatures vary from a minimum of 16.6°C (61.9°F) to a maximum of 27.7°C (81.9°F) in January, to a minimum of 10.3°C (50.5°F) to a maximum of 20.2°C (68.4°F) in July.

English is spoken by an increasing number of people, but it is not yet widespread. Knowledge of basic Malagasy and/or French will be very useful throughout the island.

Additional foreign languages are spoken by the island’s Indian, Pakistani, Chinese and Comorian communities.

Malagasy Ariary

It is advisable to carry Euro’s in cash, mostly in notes smaller than €100 as banks, hotels and change bureaus don’t readily accept notes larger than €100. Do not try to change money "on the streets" as the black market is illegal and you risk having your money stolen or being arrested and fined by plain-clothes government agents.

Banks are generally open from 0800-1100 and from 1400-1630, Monday-Friday.

You can also change money in your hotel - the rate of exchange is about 5% less than that of the bank. You should always get a receipt when changing money.

Try to ask for some small denomination notes in the local currency as change is often scarce in the rural areas

Major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted in larger hotels and some shops in main cities. Expect larger merchant fees.

ATM’s are located in major towns and cities only (ie. Antananarivo, Morondava, Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa, Toliara). Visa is accepted at all ATM’s. Mastercard is accepted at some but not all.

International Dialing Code

Type C plug

Electricity in Madagascar is 220 Volts, at 50 hertz. The most common pin type is C. (2 round prong).

A single entry visa can be obtained upon arrival at the airport in Antananarivo or Nosy Be, provided your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the last day of the intended stay in Madagascar, and provided that you have an airline-issued ticket or passenger receipt confirming your intention to leave Madagascar within 90 days.

From 27 April 2018, the approximate visa fees (subject to change) are:

For a stay up to 30 days - 35 Euros or 37 US Dollars per person (payable in Cash)

For a stay from 31 days to 60 days - 40 Euros or 45 US Dollars per person (payable in Cash)

For a true adventurer, a Madagascar tour is a necessity. Few places on Earth offer the scope and diversity of Madagascar - a stunning island off the south-east coast of Africa which affords a unique treasure trove of flora and fauna and an often-overlooked cultural legacy stretching back two millennia.

Home to some 5% of the world’s known animal and plant species, including a staggering 60% of all chameleon species, lemur, fossa and six endemic species of Baobab trees, Madagascar ...

Home to some 5% of the world’s known animal and plant species, including a staggering 60% of all chameleon species, lemur, fossa and six endemic species of Baobab trees, Madagascar is arguably one of the most ecologically unique countries on Earth, and as a result of its separation from the Indian subcontinent 88 million years ago – stands as the oldest island on the planet.

Our Madagascar holidays explore these staggering landscapes of rainforest, white beaches, coral reefs, mountains and highland massif, all the while delving into the fascinating Malagasy culture and attempting to glimpse some of the country’s famous wildlife. Although its infrastructure can still be a challenge, the rewards for the traveller are bountiful, and for those willing to get off the beaten track, many of those rewards cannot be found anywhere else on the planet.

No conversation about Madagascar would be complete without at least mentioning its most famous resident, the lemur. There are over a hundred different species of lemurs on Madagascar, from the indri, which is the largest, to the ring-tailed, the most famous, and then to the Madame Berthe’s mouse lemur, the smallest. These amazing creatures have adapted to all of Madagascar’s environments, from the alien limestone forests of Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, to the jungles of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park.

Not every visit to Madagascar is all about the wildlife, however, and although humans only arrived on the island permanently less than 2,000 years ago, the variety of cultures and influences from Arabia, Southeast Asia, Africa and even Europe, can clearly be seen in today’s vibrant Malagasy culture. On our Madagascar tours, we will meet some of these amazing people, like the Mikea, forest dwelling hunter gatherers whose lifestyle has remained almost unchanged in millennia. Or, the famous Zafimanary ship builders whose legendary skills have seen them inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Any traveller should also take some time to explore Madagascar’s surprisingly cosmopolitan capital of Antananarivo, a real focal point for the melting pot that is modern Madagascar.

So come and discover extraordinary Madagascar for yourself with Wild Frontiers on one of our outstanding group or tailor-made tours.

Everything You Need to Know

From lush, green rainforests to stark limestone tsingy formations to the dry spiny desert, Madagascar has a huge range of ecosystems, geography, and microclimates—and every area supports its own endemic species. Berenty, in the south, is the best place to see dancing sifaka lemurs, while Ankarana, in the north, is home to crowned lemurs. See below to compare the differences between the major National Parks and know what to expect from each.

Madagascars National Parks Map.

Madagascar has a tropical climate with many microclimates, so the weather can vary greatly depending on the time of year and region of the country. The north and south tend to be warm and dry, while the highlands, including the capital, Antananarivo, are cooler. The east is mostly rainforest, where wet weather is always a possibility.

The ideal time to visit is between April and November (there are heavy rains from December to March, so travel during that time is not recommended). Each season is unique and offers its own attractions. See below to understand the differences between each month and what to expect with each.

A chart showing weather in Madagascar.

Madagascar has a wide array of things to see and do when you visit, and our itineraries make sure you get to experience the best of it all. We put together a list of the top things you have to do when you visit.

There’s so much to see and experience in Madagascar that the design of your trip is especially important. You’ll need enough time in each park to take full advantage of opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, and spending time with locals. We provided a sample day itinerary so you can know when to expect before you arrive.

Wilderness Travel’s long-term relationships in Madagascar give you the privilege of insider access and authentic cultural exchanges. Depending on the adventure you choose, you can visit a school that has been a success story for nearby families, travel to a fishing village by outrigger canoe, talk with local female weavers and see their hand-loomed designs, visit with traditional wood carvers and paper makers, dance to live Malagasy music, and visit a wildlife research center. See below to learn more about each of these experiences.

REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

The trip was excellent; I’d highly recommend it. Really fun…the local guides and Trip Leader were all wonderful. I am so glad Wilderness Travel took care of everything.
Our Trip Leader was amazing. We couldn’t figure out how he timed everything so perfectly! He’s a treasure and a fabulous representative of WT and Madagascar.
A wonderful experience that exceeded my expectations—and I’m picky! I like the small group size, and there was ample opportunity both to hike and to mingle with locals at markets and in villages.
Amazing! High quality outdoor experiences, lodgings, and cuisine—then listening to the haunting calls of the indri echoing through the jungle.
This was our first experience with a group tour—what a great introduction! We did this trip to see wildlife, and were delighted with what we got to see. Beautiful country, wildlife, and people—thank you for making our first group trip unforgettable!
Our local guides clearly loved their country, and were amazing at finding and showing us the birds and animals.
I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. There was a great mix of experiences in Madagascar. Obviously a lot of planning went into making it so memorable. Thank you!
It was a true adventure! The country was gorgeous to see and experience, the people of the country were friendly, and the experience with the lemurs was off the charts!
Our Trip Leader and local guides’ depth of knowledge was unbelievable. That’s one reason I chose a tour company for Madagascar—it would be very difficult to obtain such quality guiding on ones’ own.

Indri, Andasibe

Thanks to a DreamWorks film of the same name, Madagascar proves a popular choice for many children. As the animals found here are no threat to humans, you and your family are safe to explore the endless parks on foot, in search of local wildlife.

Fossa, Madagascar
