Our tour guides, Joe and Jim, provided an excellent experience on our Drinks About Town tour! Our group loved visiting 3 different locations with different drinks/vibes. They were all unique and fun. Highly recommend for your next trip to Portland!
We had a cruise today with Dylan and Zach and, I have to say, they made it the best birthday ever. They took us around Casco Bay, provided historical facts, answered all our ridiculous questions, and joked around with us. Both went above and beyond to make sure we got some amazing pictures of the beautiful sunset and all other surroundings. We will always remember our time in Portland, but Zach and Dylan made it truly special.
Beers, sunset
First I should start by saying that I cannot recommend this tour enough. Seriously it was very well done and you get to try a lot of beer. We did this brew tour for a bachelorette party this past weekend. It was 10 girls, the brides mom and two aunts. We were accompanied by our tour guide Shea and Drivin' Ryan. We stopped at 3 places: Bissell Brothers, Foulmouthed and Goodfire. Our stop at Bissell brothers was first and we got to go in before the place even opened so that was cool. The beer was good and every stop you got to hear a little about each brewery and what made them different from the next. Obviously the group gets a little tipsier as the stops go on and Shea and Ryan were awesome with us the whole time. Shea is like an encyclopedia of beer facts so we did some fun trivia during the driving potions. PS on one stop they tour provides snacks. Everyone is my group was obsessed with it. It was some kind of local quiche pastry and it was amazing. Apparently we do it have anything like it back in Massachusetts lol. I highly recommend this tour!
Do not waste your money on the Pub tour. The description sounds like a lot of fun. The pictures looked even better with people having a good time and tasting different beers. Our first stop was at a brewery that did not brew any better. I was expecting a tour and information. We were herded into the back to a table and were told we had 20 minutes to pick our flight of beer, taste it, and then get out. Next we want to OK buyer on the waterfront. Apparently our arrival was not expected. The tour guide suggested we scrap the stop and we're back to the next bar. She also said they had lots of beers on tap. We stayed and Mayer moved to add another table. A guy brought out a glass of beer for each person. No choice, no discussion of local beers, Drink it down and get out. Tour guide was apologetic and said that what happens between the upper management and the restaurant owners it doesn't always get conveyed to the people who are actually doing the tour. We then went to the third bar where they were also not expecting us. It was packed. The manager said it would be an hour and a half before we could get a table. The tour guide took us to a corner where there was a shelf and told us this is going to be your table. He then told us just to go up to the bar and order a beer. In essence, I paid $261 to take my family to get a five dollar beer in 3 bars. This tour was absolutely not as described. It was disorganized, and just terrible! I am demanding a refund.
If you are looking for an organized, fun way to get to know downtown Portland Maine with local beer, this is perfect. This tour will get you in and with beer, no matter how busy the place. You get vip treatment. I did the walk, talk and taste on my own while my family was attending a local event. I learned about Portland Maine history, tasted some beers, learned about the alcohol scene there, etc. John, our tour guide was terrific, and has a lot of knowledge and fun personality to share. I highly recommend this tour!

My Customized Shipyard flight. First stop.
My fiance and I rescheduled a vacation to Maine from NYC because COVID obviously messed up previously-scheduled vacations. We wanted to make sure we were able to have a nice relaxing time and experience all of Maine's culture and breweries. Enter The Maine Brew Bus. We had Victoria as our guide and she was AMAZING! It was just us two and her on the tour and while it had to modified due to the pandemic, she still made it great. We learned so much and I left the tour knowing what kind of beer I actually like now. She was knowledgable, personable and we had a great time. It was a perfect balance of education of beer, Maine, history and culture, as well as getting to know each other. I highly recommend the tour and highly recommend Victoria.
A great time seeing new breweries, meeting new people on the tour, and of course drinking great beer.
AWESOME tour of breweries and distilleries!! They take a refurbished school bus, which is actually comfortable. Zeus & Nate were GREAT at explaining the city while we drive to the stops. The breweries the pick are always tops! We got a tour through one of the working breweries! LOTS of samples & great information. They even give you a little snack on the bus. This is WELL WORTH the trip!!

Maine Breweries, Brew Pubs, Beer Tours, and Festivals
Maine is known first and foremost for its lobster , that delicious crustacean from the coast. The Pine Tree State is also a major producer of potatoes, blueberries, maple syrup, even broccoli.
But beer? Who knew? Well, an ice cold IPA sure goes well with fresh lobster dipped in butter, or Maine fried clams and French fries made from hand-cut Maine potatoes, right?! Beer making is big in Maine. Perhaps the state mantra could be “Maine, the way beer should be” or Maine – Beer Vacation Land.
Maine has became a micro brew state in the past few decades, with new breweries and beer labels popping up like lobster pots in Cape Porpoise harbor. Lots of beer lovers in Maine simply craft their own small batch beer in their basement, but the Maine beer scene is far more sophisticated than home brews in houses.
You can actually visit Maine and make your time in Vacationland into a Maine beer tasting tour, visiting as many breweries as lighthouses and lobster shacks. These top Maine attractions go nicely together, lighthouses, boat tours , lobster bakes and beer.
Sounds good, doesn’t it?!
Maine Brew Pubs and Breweries
In recent years, Maine has become a beer-crafting leader, the low density state now hosts over 50 independent breweries, drafting 200 plus unique pours from porters and pilsners to IPAs and ales. The labels on Maine beers are as tempting and entertaining as the libation contained within each bottle. Baxter Brewing for example offers a Stowe Away IPA with a pirate-like skull and cross bones on the beer can.
Maine’s ski resorts have special small batch beers like Sugarloaf’s Bag and Kettle Brewing Company’s Winter Ale or Joe Stout made with Carrabassett coffee beans, delicious served après ski slopeside with a Bag Burger at Maine’s biggest ski mountain.
Portland has numerous breweries and brewpubs, including the original Gritty McDuff’s in the Old Port. Bissell Brothers Brewery at Thompson Point is popular. Even Tide is a small start up brewery gone big. Maine beer Company makes delicious craft beers. But there are so many good pours – Allagash, Bunker, FoulMouthed, Foundation, Lone Pine, Rising Tide, Oxbow Sebago Brewing, named for Sebago Lake, has its own brew family, with several brew pub restaurants and clever varietals with a vacationland theme like Frye’s Leap, Lake Trout Stout, Simmer Down Summer Session and Saddleback Ale. Full Throttle and Long Winter Ale are Sebago single batch brews, seasonal with a super beefy beer buzz content.
Beer Pairing Restaurants
At Maine’s best restaurants , the beer list is often as lengthy and fermented as the fancy wine list, with local offerings from light ales to blonde beers to porters, stouts and super hoppy beers loaded with barley that resemble bourbon more than beer. Maine’s top chefs now cater to beer drinkers with beer dinners to heighten the palate and pair with their host of culinary treats. Far beyond the beer battered shrimp, restaurants like York Harbor Inn host beer pairing dinners with flights of beer and several courses of seafood and beer braised beef, even a stout inspired dessert to finish off your feast.
Beer Festivals in Maine are huge in summer and fall harvest season. The Portland Brewfest is held Labor Day weekend with over 40 breweries and 70 beers for tasting. In November, the Maine Brewers Festival takes place in Portland with music and Maine brewer samplings. Bangor’s Beer Festival is in June each year with live music, a beer tent and craft fair of local Maine products. The Maine Lakes Brew Fest takes place at Point Sebago Resort in Casco end of September, with a lakeside setting, beer sampling, craft fairs and live music on the shores of Sebago Lake .
Brew Touring
There are so many Maine breweries and beer making factories that in 2009, Maine Brewers Guild created the Maine Beer Trail Passport, a clever map and plan of the many brew pubs and distilleries to visit in Vacationland. You can follow along a proposed beer route through Maine, tasting and touring Maine’s beer plants from small scale to full beer brewing factories, or just visit a few breweries between lighthouses and beaches if you don’t like your pilsner so planned.
The Maine Beer Bus is a fun way to have your froth with frequent stops and narration along with way, and a DD. The Maine Brew Bus is a Beer Bus Tour you can charter for a private event, say a bachelor party, or take part in their party on wheels – The Progressive Beer Dinner or the standard Beer Bus Tour of several breweries on the Southern Maine Coast , Portland to Freeport , and Bangor .
Who is to blame for this brimming Maine beer scene? David Geary, yes of Geary’s Beer, he made Maine’s first official craft beer since Prohibition in 1986. By 1988, his fellow brewers Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer opened Maine’s first true brewpub, Gritty McDuff’s on Fore Street in Portland with partners, and the rest is hops history.
While visiting Maine, be sure to frequent a few of these fantastic brew pubs and beer crafting companies along the way, and check out Maine’s wine scene and local vineyards . Drink and drive responsibly or hop on a beer bus tour or a brews cruise ferry to have fun safely.

Maine Brew Bus Announces Summer Tours
- Press Release
- Posted 2 Hours Ago --> Jul. 2, 2014 at 2:30 PM
Travel writers recently ranked Portland as a “much desired” travel destination, and an estimated 8.3 million people visit Portland and Southern Maine each year. Based partially on the tourism trade, Maine’s original brewery tour company has enjoyed very strong success in the first 22 months of their operation.
Their all-inclusive tours on bright green former school buses are designed to present an educational insider’s look at Maine’s craft breweries, distilleries, wineries, and more. Each tour features plenty of samples, local experienced live guides, a safe designated driver, a full lunch or snacks, and historical facts about alcohol.
The company also produces frequent specialty and adventure tours, and began a “Hop and Go” free shuttle on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings that brings guests to producers and purveyors of Portland’s craft alcoholic beverages.
In May of this year, the company was awarded an Editor’s Choice award by Down East Magazine. They were recognized as Maine’s Designated Driver in the Best of Maine July 2014 edition. The popular public review website TripAdvisor presented The Maine Brew Bus with a 2014 Certificate of Excellence based on guest reviews. For 10 months the company has maintained the #1 activity in Portland position on the site.
The new list of summer tours that supplement the existing schedule include:
The Beer About Town tour every Sunday visits three Portland breweries. One that is brand new, one that is under four years old, and one that is constantly revamping their beer offerings after 15 years in the business.
Monday Mix and Mash and the Tuesday Tipple tours bring guests to one local brewery, one winery, and one distillery. A different lineup of stops is featured on the two different days.
The Upside of Bayside tour every Thursday explores the rebounding East Bayside neighborhood and stops by a kombucha producer, a mead maker, and a beer brewer that are literally just hundreds of yards apart.
Friday features the Southern Crawl tour diving deep into York County in Southern Maine to explore several new brewing enterprises. This tour offers pickup options in both Portland and Saco, ME

About The Maine Brew Bus
The Maine Brew Bus was founded in September 2012 by Zach and Allison Poole, who saw a surprising hole in the infrastructure surrounding Maine’s wonderful local businesses. The company began by offering tours on Saturday afternoons to a handful of breweries in the Portland area.
Guests quickly saw that having a designated driver to guide them to both established and up-and-coming producers offered them an opportunity to learn much more about the craft alcohol business than they could learn on their own. Tours are now led by expert guides in addition to a knowledgeable driver to ensure the best possible experience for participating guests as well as for the businesses with which they partner.
The first summer proved that Maine’s original Brew Bus was a very popular tour with locals and visitors alike. Exciting tour routes were added on weekdays, and newly opened breweries embraced the idea of having “The Green Bus” stop by so that guests could taste and tour at their facilities. By the time the first anniversary of the company rolled around, nearly 1,500 guests had taken tours and The Maine Brew Bus had become the #1 activity in Portland as rated by TripAdvisor users. The fleet now includes two buses and additional staff.
The all-inclusive tours on bright green school buses provide a behind-the-scenes look at Maine’s craft breweries, distilleries, wineries, and more. They offer daily scheduled and private tours in Greater Portland and Southern Maine. They also offer frequent specialty and adventure tours, and feature a different brewery each month in their Progressive Beer Dinner series.
In 2014, The Maine Brew Bus was presented a TripAdvisor “Certificate of Excellence” and also an Editor’s Choice award by Down East Magazine as a “2014 Best of Maine” recipient.

Explore Portland Breweries with the Maine Brew Bus
Portland, Maine is known for its craft beer scene, with 90 plus breweries in the state producing some of our favorite beers, from New England-style IPAs to sours and lagers. Many guests of our Portland boutique hotels visit Maine to go right to the source of some of the best craft beer around—the breweries. One great way to see a visit a number of breweries while getting the behind the scenes tour is to ride along on the Maine Brew Bus .
The Maine Brew Bus began in 2012 and offers exclusive experiences at Portland's breweries, wineries, and distilleries. Tours are offered on small green school buses driven by a driver who doesn't partake in any of the samplings, ensuring you have a safe visit to Maine's best breweries. The tour guides are knowledgeable, friendly with brewery staff, and provide a great afternoon aboard the Maine Brew Bus.
Typically tours are three hours and leave from Old Port Spirits & Cigar, located on Portland's Commercial Street. Your group will load onto the bus, buckle up, and head to the first distillery, winery, or brewery, while your guide gives you an overview of the Maine beer, wine, and booze scene. At the facility, the guide or a brewery staff member will greet your group and give a short overview of the business, often giving you a behind the scenes peek at the action. Samples follow, along with some time for relaxing, purchasing some merchandise or cans, and then you're off to the next stop.
Tour topics range from the "Beerunch," a morning tour that visits three Portland breweries, a boilermaker tour that visits a brewery and a distillery, and a gluten-free tour that features wine, spirits, and kombucha. Whether you're looking to learn all you can about Maine's breweries or just for a fun experience with friends or family, the Maine Brew Bus is a great way to get out and explore Portland. Leave the logistics to the tour guide and sip back and relax!
