One of the healthiest known forms of whey is collected during our Swiss cheese-making process and distributed for a multitude of uses, from animal nutrition to protein shakes.

A destination for both local residents and visitors, the Rothenbuhler Cheese Chalet offers an array of gourmet cheeses, meats, maple syrup, jams, pancake mixes, and more.

Traditional Cheese Making Done Right…

We are a family-owned coop located about 30 miles east of Cleveland. The co-op was started back in 1956. There are 90 Co-op members, 98% of whom are Amish. Most of our milk comes in 10 gallon cans.  All of our cheese is natural, made from milk from cows that are not treated with BST hormone.  We are a USDA approved plant.

Our cheese is made by the traditional method in vats. Making each vat individually ensures a quality product for our customers.

We make Mild Cheddar, Monterrey Jack, Marble, Pepper Jack, Farmer’s, Brick, and our famous Marble Pepper jack.  Our newest products consist of Colby, Co- Jack, and pepper Jack Longhorn. Our cheese is shipped from Wisconsin to New Jersey and from Canada to Florida.

Visit our retail store and help yourself to free cheese samples. Watch cheese being made through the big windows and ask for a tour.

Formerly known as Middlefield Cheese House, our deli offers a wide variety of delicious meats and cheeses to choose from as well as sandwiches made fresh just for you! You can also shop for items made locally here in Geauga County, including maple syrup, honey and many jams! John (Hans) Dauwaulder trained as a master cheese-maker in Switzerland and came to the States in the 1920's to display his Artisan talents in a growing cheese market. Through the years the Dauwalder family has partnered with local farmers to produce their cheese and that commitment remains strong. Today up to twelve tons of cheese can be made in a day: we make over 25 varieties of cheese averaging 50,000 pounds of cheese a week and offer free samples of over 50 varieties of cheese, Meat, Jams, and Fudge daily.

OHIO WINE AND CHEESE TRAIL #1

On this road trip you will have the option to visit 4 wineries, 3 cheese stops, 2 orchards, a popular jam and jelly store, and a store that sells products for “simple living”. Please note that the wineries and other stops are only open on select days of the week.

THE GEAUGA COUNTY CHEESE TRAIL 

Small towns, local businesses, Amish buggies and miles of countryside views are what you will find on this cheese trail.  I have included only 9 stops on this road trip. The perfect number of stops for a one day trip. Not every stop will sell cheese, but as you move from cheese stop to cheese stop, I only thought it only fair to include a few of my favorite road stops that are unique to the area.

Enjoy the day and fill your brown bag in Ohio’s Amish Country. Begin the day at the Middlefield Swiss Cheese House, where you will taste samples of fine cheeses as you browse through the cheese store. A variety of cheeses are available for purchase, in addition to the bag of tid bits of cheese for your own brown bag to take home. Enjoy a real Amish Wedding feast in an Amish home. Next will be a stop at Mary Yoder’s Bakery where you’ll receive a small loaf of bread. Another seasonal treat will be added to your cache from D & S Produce. The day would not be complete without a stop at the Nauvoo Country Market for a jar of Amish jam for your brown bag. End the day at End of Commons General Store where you will receive a hand-made item for your brown bag. (L)

Insurance:   Travel Insurance is optional. To be eligible for the waiver of pre-existing medical condition exclusion, the protection plan must be purchased within 15 days from the time you make your initial trip deposit and for the prepaid non-refundable payments or deposits.  If purchased, the insurance premium is refundable during the 15 day review period, unless you have filed a claim or departed on your trip.  The insurance premium is non-refundable after the 15 day review period .
