The 10 Best Caves and Caverns in Virginia

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. All hosted affiliate links follow our editorial & privacy policies .

If you’ve ever driven I-81 through the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, you probably know that there are myriad caverns and caves in Virginia.

In fact, many of the most famous caves in the USA are on the Virginia caverns map!

But you may be wondering, what’s the difference between a cave and a cavern?

Some folks say that  caverns have stalactites and stalagmites, while caves do not.

Some say that caves have sections with no sunlight, while others say it’s all about the plant and animal life contained within.

But geology experts actually say that there’s no difference  whatsoever. They claim that “cavern” is a term most often used for marketing  show caves , while “cave” is the term used by professionals.

The best caves and caverns in VA are world-class attractions with amazing rock formations.

They’re dotted throughout the state of Virginia , from caves near Washington DC to the borders with Tennessee and Kentucky.

Read on for our in-depth guide to the best caverns in Virginia, including details about the history of each cave, guided tours, major features, and a handy Virginia caves map!

Shenandoah Valley Caverns & Caves

Luray Caverns Organ in Luray VA

1. Luray Caverns

 101 Cave Hill Rd, Luray VA • (540) 743-6551 •  Official Website

Luray Caverns in Virginia is the largest show cave in the Eastern US, and they’ve been attracting tourists to the Shenandoah Valley since 1878.

The cave features numerous impressive calcite (limestone) formations, including columns, mud flows, stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone. The Double Column stands 47 feet, and is the tallest formation in the caverns.

One of its coolest features is the Luray Cavern organ, The Great Stalacpipe Organ. It’s the largest musical instrument in the world, and has been featured on ABC’s Good Morning America and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood .

There are also mirrored pools with incredible optical illusions. Though they’re quite shallow, the reflections of the stalactites on the ceiling make them seem deep.

Luray Cavern tickets are $32 for adults ($29 for seniors) and $16 for children (free for kids under 6), and group discounts are available.

Admission includes the caverns, as well as the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Toy Town Junction, and Shenandoah Heritage Village (a living history attraction).

There’s also a Garden Maze and Rope Adventure Park on site for an additional charge.

Tour Guide at Grand Caverns in Grottoes VA

2. Grand Caverns

5 Grand Caverns Dr, Grottoes VA • (888) 430-CAVES •  Official Website

Grand Caverns VA has been open for tours since 1806, which makes it the oldest continually operating show cavern in the USA.

It was so popular that both Union and Confederate Soldiers visited it during the Civil War .

Once known as Weyer’s Cave and the Grottoes of Shenandoah , the Grand Caverns were discovered in 1804, when hunter Bernard Weyer was retrieving a trap.

The caverns were named a National Natural Landmark in 1973, and were officially given to the town of Grottoes VA by the Upper Valley Regional Park Authority in 2009.

This cave is especially renowned for its unique shield formations, but it also has stalagmites, stalactites, columns, draperies, and flowstone.

Cathedral Hall, the largest room in the attraction, is nearly 300 feet long and 70 feet high.

The park at Grand Caverns has biking and hiking trails , a mini-golf course, and a swimming pool. There are also shelters for picnics, a playground, and some great spots for fishing.

The grounds are open daily, and advance reservations are required for touring the cave.

Caverns Virginia Shenandoah

3. Shenandoah Caverns

261 Caverns Rd, Quicksburg VA • (540) 77-3115 •  Official Website

Operating for over 100 years now, Shenandoah Caverns is the only cave in Virginia with elevator service.

Unfortunately, the entire site cannot be made ADA-accessible without damaging the natural wonder.

All cave tours are led by experienced guides, and they take about one hour to complete. The temperature in the cave is a steady 56º, so bringing a light jacket is a good idea.

Some of the major geological formations to look out for in the cave include Breakfast Bacon, Capitol Dome, Rainbow Lake , and Diamond Cascade.

Other attractions onsite include the American Celebration on Parade (parade floats), Main Street of Yesteryear (1940s-50s department store window displays), and the  Gemstone Mining Sluice (panning for treasures).

Shenandoah Caverns is open 7 days a week. Their first tour begins at 10 AM, and reservations are not required. Tickets are $31 for adults and $15 for children, but kids ages 5 and under get free admission.

Endless Caverns VA

4. Endless Caverns

1800 Endless Caverns Rd, New Market VA • (540) 896-2283 •  Official Website

Discovered in 1879, Endless Caverns VA once seemed like a mere hole covered by boulders.

But it turned out to be a 6-mile cave system at the base of the Massanutten Mountains, which are home to one of the most popular ski resorts in Virginia .

Endless Cave is home to colonies of bats, most of which are Little Brown Bats (which you will likely see on the tour).

In the spring and fall , tours of the Endless Caverns run every other hour from 10 AM to 4 PM. In summer, the tours run every hour.

Guided Endless Cave tours cost $25 for adults or $14 for kids ages 4-12. Kids ages 4 and under get in free.

Endless Caverns also has campgrounds , but visitors don’t have to stay in order to visit the caves. Amenities include a pool, playground, catch-and-release pond, game room, and hiking trails .

In addition to the anthodite, there are numerous rock formations, as well as 3 underground streams and Rainbow Waterfall, a 37-foot underground waterfall .

Some of the other highlights include the Painted Desert, Grotto of Nativity, Fairyland Lake , and Wishing Well.

Tours of Skyline Caverns start every 30 minutes and last one hour, and reservations are not required. Children under age 5 get in free, while ages 6-12 cost $14, and adults are $28 each.

Crystal Grottoes Caverns

6. BONUS CAVE: Crystal Grottoes Cavern (Maryland)

19821 Shepherdstown Pike, Boonsboro MD • (301) 432-6336 •  Official Website

We won’t dive too deeply into this cave, since it isn’t actually located in Virginia .

But Crystal Grottoes is located about 60 miles northwest of DC in Boonsboro, Maryland.

The Crystal Grottoes Cavern is not nearly the spectacle you would expect from a top-notch Virginia cave.

But it is worth mentioning for those seeking too explore caves near Washington DC.

8. Dixie Caverns

5753 West Main St, Salem VA • (540) 380-2085 •  Official Website

Dixie Caverns VA has been operating as a show cave for a solid century now.

The caverns were discovered in 1920, when a dog named Dixie (who belonged to two local  farm boys) fell down a hole that led to them.

This cave’s most well-known formation is a bell-shaped flowstone form aptly known as the Wedding Bell.

Tours of Dixie Caverns take about 45 minutes and require a 1/4-mile of walking, including some staircases.

Entrance fees are $18 for adults, $8 for kids ages 5-12, and free for kids aged 4 and under.  The cave is open every day except Tuesday, from 11 AM to 4 PM.

Sand Cave Virginia

9. Sand Cave

SR 724, Ewing VA • (276) 346-4629 •  Official Website

Sand Cave Virginia is hidden in the Cumberland Gap Historic National Park, which spreads out between Kentucky, Tennessee , and Virginia.

However, the cave is best accessed via a trail from Thomas Walker Civic Park in Ewing VA.

While this cave doesn’t offer a maze-like exploration of different rooms, it is open to the public and makes for a great hike (or horseback ride ).

The ceiling of the Sand Cave is a mixture of beautiful, covered rock formations.

Continuing down the hiking trail for another 1.5 miles leads to White Rocks, from which you can see all 3 of the  states the park is in.

Caves in Virginia -Cave Salamander

10. Gap Caverns

Route 58, Ewing VA • (804) 248-2817 •  Official Website

Cumberland Gap National Historic Park has a mega cave in Virginia, and it’s one of the main attractions for visitors.

Gap Caverns is a karst cave, which was formed by natural chemical erosion from rainwater that collected carbon dioxide on its way down the Virginia Mountains .

The cave actually has several levels, some of which have had (or still have) waterways moving through them. Gap Creek still flows on the bottom level of the cave.

Although 14 miles of the cave have been explored, only a 1/2-mile of it is open to the public via Gap Cave tours.

In addition to water, there are lots of cool rock formations to see, as well as coloration from minerals and animals such as salamanders and bats.

Ranger-led guided tours of up to 20 visitors are available from April through September, and cost $8 for adults or $4 for kids ages 5 to 12.

Natural Tunnel Virginia

11. Natural Tunnel

1420 Natural Tunnel Pkwy, Duffield VA • (276) 940-2674 •  Official Website

Unlike the other Virginia caves on our list, Natural Tunnel is not one that visitors can enter. It’s observed from the entrance via a viewing platform, because a train track runs right through it!

The massive tunnel was started by carbon-filled groundwater from the glacial period, and fully formed by Stock Creek carving away at the limestone bedrock.

In the mid-1800s,  railroad lines began eyeing it for easy passage through the Blue Ridge Mountains .

While both passenger trains and cargo trains once traveled through it, only coal trains use the Natural Tunnel these days (and even those are rare).

Visitors can see the attraction by going to Natural Tunnel State Park, one of our favorite Virginia State Parks . Hiking down to the cave is free, but steep, or you can ride the chairlift for a few bucks.

The park also has several other attractions to explore, including campgrounds , the Blockhouse on the historic Wilderness Road (which Daniel Boone once traveled), and a visitor center. –by Jonathon Engels; featured image of Natural Bridge Caverns by Bret Love & Mary Gabbett

We encourage anyone who loves the Blue Ridge region to learn about the  Leave No Trace   principles of responsible environmental stewardship.

Stay on marked trails, take only pictures, pack out your trash, and be considerate of others who share the trails and parks you explore.

Remember that waterfalls and rocky summits can be dangerous. Never try to climb waterfalls or get close to a ledge to get a selfie.

When you're exploring the wilderness, it's better to be safe than to be a statistic!

For the last several years they have lived just off the BRP near Elkin, Southwest Virginia, and the NC High Country. The couple also volunteers with the Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention, the Elkin Valley Trail Association, and Reeves Downtown School of Music.

Frequent FAQs

Q:  Do I maintain possession of my phone at all times?

Q:  Will the case affect my phone in any way?

Q:  My ticket is on my phone. What do I do?

A: Printed tickets are preferred for entry, but Yondr staff will be standing by to unlock your phone so you can access your mobile ticket in order to enter the venue.

Q:  I have a babysitter at home OR I am on-call for work — Where can I check my phone? A: Set your phone to vibrate as you enter the venue. You’ll be able to feel your phone vibrate through the Yondr case when you receive calls or texts. You may use your phone throughout the night at designated Phone Use Areas in the lobby of the venue.

22 Must-See Fall Concerts Across Northern Virginia

Dan Layus Augustana

With big names like The Eagles and Harry Styles coming to town this fall, you won’t want to miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime performance.

By Leanne Stahulak September 2, 2021

Whether you love jamming out to boy bands or classic rock, this fall is full of great shows for all genres of music. And, since Northern Virginia is full of concert venues, many are right in our backyard. If you’re looking to catch your first post-COVID concert, consider getting tickets for these solo artists, bands, and Grammy winners.

Capital One Arena

8/31 & 9/1 Take it easy with this classic 1970s rock band’s performance of the entire Hotel California album, followed by a set of their greatest hits. The show will star new and old Eagles band members alike.

Harry Styles

9/18 Craving that watermelon-sugar high? Pop sensation Harry Styles finally brings it, after his Love On Tour concerts were postponed last year. Hear all your favorite hits from Styles’ groundbreaking 2019 album, Fine Line , at Capital One Arena.

Enrique Iglesias & Ricky Martin

10/14 Latin legends Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin are sharing the stage in a live tour promoting both of their newest albums. The two artists boast a number of top hits between them, in both English and Spanish. Don’t miss the dynamic duo’s team-up at Capital One Arena.

Tally Ho Theater

Sister hazel.

9/4 The American alt-rock band mixes up folk, jangle-pop, grunge, and Southern-inflected classic rock for a sound that’s endured since its self-titled album hit in 1994. Their music has turned up in movies and TV shows like 10 Things I Hate About You , The Wedding Planner , and Scrubs .

amish outlaws

The Amish Outlaws

9/16 Before they discovered a passion for music and performing, most of these band members grew up in the Amish lifestyle (the rest are “honorary Amish”). Now known for their iconic hats and suspenders, this rock-and-roll cover band is ready to gets fans fired up at the Tally Ho Theater.

Jiffy Lube Live

9/7 Show off your Jagger-like moves when Maroon 5 performs its first new album in three years, Jordi . Featuring special guest performances by Meghan Trainor and Leon Bridges, this show is the perfect event for you and your sugar.

Jonas Brothers

10/10 Catch these famous siblings when they roll up to Jiffy Lube Live, along with country singer Kelsea Ballerini, on their Remember This tour. Listen to their new single and old fan-favorites at this outdoor event that you’d be a sucker to miss.

Jason Aldean

10/16 Country favorite Jason Aldean is jumping back in the saddle and getting on the road for his ninth album, 9 . He’ll be joined by fellow country stars Hardy and Lainey Wilson, who both put out debut albums in the past year.

Warner Theatre

9/8 Feel the power. This multiplatinum rock band will perform songs from its seminal album Threat to Survival and others in a headbanging weeknight show.

Randy Rainbow

10/8 & 10/9 Current events via song parody? Say less. Viral musical satirist Randy Rainbow will be taking his top hits to the stage at the Warner Theatre, along with never-before-heard original songs from composers Marc Shaiman and Alan Menken. Prepare for pokes at all your (least) favorite politicians.

tab benoit

10/21 In the mood for the blues? Check out guitar guru and singer Tab Benoit when he hits up The Birchmere for his Whiskey Bayou Revue.

Jammin’ Java

Madison cunning.

10/23 The 21-year-old singer-songwriter’s debut album is deeply personal and utterly relatable. Cunning writes about the struggles we all went through in our late teens and early 20s, and she does so with electric energy and a unique sound.

11/4 Augustana’s frontman, Dan Layus, is going solo. The alternative band changed the game in the 2000s with hits like “Boston,” “Sweet and Low,” and “Steal Your Heart.” Now, Layus’ heartbreaking voice will captivate audiences at Jammin Java.

Chuck Prophet & The Mission Express

11/7 Prophet’s latest album, The Land That Time Forgot , is more than a country-inflected, folksy, bluesy collection of music. It has political ties, too, drawing on social issues and current events to get to the heart of what’s going on in our world today.

11/12 The winner of American Idol’s eighth season is hitting the stage at Jammin Java with fresh singles like “Hallelujah! For Now” and favorites from his fifth album, Letting You In.

Liz Longley

11/14 Taylor Swift who? Liz Longley is the next singer-songwriter to look out for. This indie-alternative crooner has a voice that will stop you cold; it’s been featured in the background of hit shows ABC’s Beauty & The Beast, Lifetime’s Army Wives, and MTV’s Scream.

William Elliott Whitmore

12/10 Banjo? Check. Bass drum? Check. Folk singer William Elliott Whitmore is now ready to play on. The Iowa native stirs the soul with his powerful voice and steady presence. This multitalented performer will wow audiences at Jammin Java come wintertime.

Street Corner Symphony

12/15 Missing those Pitch Perfect vibes? Get your a cappella fix with this group of Nashville-based singers. Originally premiering on NBC’s a cappella competition The Sing-Off, this quintet performs a variety of songs across several different genres. This season’s theme? All holiday, all the time.

The Ex Files

12/17 Sometimes, the hardest part of getting over a breakup is remembering all the good times that came before. That’s where playlists like “The Ex Files” come in—to remind us of the roller-coaster ride of love we just got off. Performed on stage by nine singers, these tunes take us back through journeys of love we just can’t escape.

leslie odom jr

Kennedy Center

Leslie odom jr..

11/26 & 11/27 Don’t wait for it! Check out the legendary Leslie Odom Jr. at the Kennedy Center this November. Neil Young, Crazy Horse reunite for first concert tour in a decade: How to get tickets

rock tour va

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are touring for the first time in a decade.

But that's not all that's in store. The reunion between Young and the rock band will be accompanied by a new nine-song album release on April 26, and on April 20, it will have a limited early release on vinyl for  Record Store Day .

The Love Earth Tour, presented by Live Nation, begins with a two-night set of shows at San Diego's Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre on April 24-25 before hitting stops across major cities in North America including New York City, Chicago, Toronto and other cities in Arizona, Texas and Tennessee.

Back in 2018, Young and Crazy Horse performed a handful of shows in central California and a few Canadian shows in early 2019, per Variety . Both had a wider tour planned in 2020 before the start of the pandemic, but Young did not want to expose people to the COVID-19 virus by embarking on a national tour.

Following a solo tour in the summer of 2023, Young brought the band back together for two shows commemorating the 50th anniversary of L.A.'s Roxy, and the group did a short private show in Toronto for a birthday party this past November. In 2021, Young and Crazy Horse joined forces on their latest album "Barn" which traced Young's views on  climate change ,  cultural divides in America  and the controversial approaches to the  COVID-19 pandemic .

"Toast," another collaboration with Crazy Horse followed "Barn" a year later.

24 things to get excited about in 2024

F arewell to 2023, a year in which rock music continued to flourish once again, after the buffer that was the covid interlude stopped everything in its tracks. Tours grew bigger and stronger – with fans now more confident that they would actually be taking place – and plenty of great albums were released.

Last year also saw us say goodbye to Kiss (maybe). That year might be over, but worry not, another one has just started, and there’s plenty of rock’n’roll moments to look forward to:

A new Judas Priest album in march

Due on March 3, the long-awaited nineteenth studio album from Judas Priest, Invincible Shield , is among the releases of 2024 (that we know about) that we are dying to hear. The two singles released from it so far, Panic Attack and Trial By Fire, suggest that the album is going to be very special indeed.

The best of all worlds, aka the long-awaited Van Halen tribute tour

Yes, it’s really happening – in the United States, at least, and sadly without the participation of drummer Alex Van Halen, or indeed Edward’s son Wolfgang. Alex’s place is taken by Jason Bonham in a line-up completed by vocalist Sammy Hagar, bassist Michael Anthony and guitarist Joe Satriani. At press time no British shows were scheduled. But hey, we can pray.

Whisper it quietly… a new Guns N' Roses album?!

Last year was a busy one for Guns N' Roses, whose appearance at Glastonbury seemed to set the whole world talking (followed by a roaring headline set at BST in London’s Hyde Park). We hoped for a new album last year, and the year before that… So who knows? At least the band are drip-feeding us with some music, such as latest single Perhaps and its predecessor Hard Skool .

Could AC/DC go on tour?

Following their show-stealing appearance at the PowerTrip Festival in California – a concert they pulled off with apparent ease, despite Brian Johnson’s well-documented health issues and the fact that ‘schoolboy’ Angus Young is now 68 years old – it’s only natural that expectations of a tour would follow. And, sure enough, all sorts of rumours currently abound, including that AC/DC will play again at Rock In Rio in Lisbon, Portugal in September 2024, and that, according to Munich’s loose-lipped Mayor, a date is booked at the Olympic Stadium in the German city on June 12. Let’s see…

Slash feat. Myles Kennedy tour with Mammoth WVH

As well as his commitments to GN’R, the man in the top hat continues to tour and record with Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators. Two years after the River Is Rising tour began, it resumes in Mexico in January, then arrives in Dublin on March 28, followed by five dates in England and Scotland in March and April. Support on all British and Irish dates comes from the aforementioned Wolfgang Van Halen and his band Mammoth.

Bruce Dickinson’s solo tour, plus his film and TV appearances

The Iron Maiden frontman steps away from the band for a chunk of 2024, not only releasing and touring The Mandrake Project , the singer’s first full solo project in almost two decades (it’s out on March 1), but also to star in Bjorn Of The Dead , a “blood-drenched gore fest” film based on the ABBA tribute band Abbatoir, written by his son, ex-Rise To Remain frontman Austin Dickinson. And no, this isn’t an early April Fool. Bruce’s five-date UK tour begins on May 18.

Priest, Saxon and Uriah Heep join forces in arenas

Eight years is a mighty long time to have waited, but in Glasgow on March 11 Judas Priest finally return to a British stage, for the first of six arena shows along with special guests Saxon and Uriah Heep. What a fantastic triple bill! The tour’s London stop is at Wembley Arena.

Foo Fighters UK dates

Dave Grohl and co. will be here again in the summer (with Josh Freese now on drums in place of the late Taylor Hawkins) to play seven stadium shows, kicking off in Manchester on June 13 and wrapping at Villa Park in Birmingham a fortnight later.

The Quireboys team up with Luke Morley

With Thunder sidelined the foreseeable future, while singer Danny Bowes takes the long road back to health, guitarist Luke Morley has stepped in to help out his old mates The Quireboys (Spike variety) on their forthcoming album, Wardour Street , and for festival appearances and tours – ostensibly as a replacement for Guy Bailey, who died last April. “Obviously I go way back with the Quireboys,” says Morley, “and I’ve always loved the band, so I’m delighted to be able to help the guys out while Thunder is taking a break.”

Tom Morello, Slash and William Duvall among the guests on a new MC5 album

A new album from Wayne Kramer and MC5 is released under the We Are All MC5 banner at the end of April. The first set of new studio recordings to carry the MC5 name since 1971’s High Time is titled Heavy Lifting and was produced by Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd, Kiss, Alice Cooper). It includes cameos from Slash, Alice In Chains frontman William Duvall, RATM guitarist Tom Morello and Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid among many others, and original MC5 drummer Dennis ‘Machine Gun’ Thompson on two tracks.

Green Day return to the UK

American pop-punks Green Day release a new studio album, Saviors , on January 19 and play a huge tour across Europe and the UK, kicking off in May and concluding at Wembley Stadium on June 29. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong says that Saviors can be seen as one of Green Day’s defining moments, including 2004’s rock opera American Idiot and their 1994 breakthrough set Dookie .

U2 to make “an unreasonable guitar record”?

U2 bassist Adam Clayton has suggested that following a trio of similarly titled records, their next might be called Songs For Fighting – echoing claims from Bono that the Irish band could heavy things up in the studio. The singer wants to write what he calls “an unreasonable guitar record”, something with “great tunes, because that’s where U2 started – with big choruses, clear ideas. And let’s go back there, but do it with some petrol and some matches.”

Shows by Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer

American alt.rock stars Smashing Pumpkins play a six-date tour of the UK and Ireland in June, with support from Weezer. It’s their first full tour of Britain since 2013. Smashing Pumpkins have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and given the length of time away the tour is bound to be a hot ticket.

'This Is Spinal Tap 2’ goes into production

Yes, really! Some four decades after the original spoof ‘rockumentary’, work is about to begin on a long-awaited sequel to This Is Spinal Tap . With Rob Reiner as director, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer have brought in a pair of very special guests: Paul McCartney and Elton John. The story will pick up with the widow of late road manager Ian Faith discovering that the Tap are contractually obligated to play one final concert. We literally can’t wait.

Download Festival 2024 to blood new(ish) talent

With Download’s organisers opting to take a chance on so-called ‘new’ talent (which isn’t strictly true, as Avenged Sevenfold have topped the bill twice before), this year’s other Download headliners are Queens Of The Stone Age and Fall Out Boy. Also on the bill are the reunited Pantera, Royal Blood, Machine Head, Babymetal, Biohazard, Fear Factory Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor, and more. Pack your wellies and your (hopefully necessary) sun cream.

Festivals a go-go!

Beyond the Download field, 2024 looks set to deliver a diverse selection of open-air live music events, including metal and hard rock (Bloodstock, Stonedead, Maid Of Stone), stoner rock (Desert Fest), Americana (The Long Road), country (Country 2 Country), melodic rock (the return of Firefest), alt.rock (Bearded Theory, 2000 Trees, Takedown), folk (West Coast Folk Festival), and more blues weekenders than you can shake a stick at.

Creed make a comeback

Preceded by a spot on their own Summer Of ’99 cruise in April, multi-platinum-selling American post-grunge band Creed are set to return to the stage via a 40-city North American tour for the first time in 12 years. Asked about adding to the dates already confirmed, and thus the possibility of European dates, singer Scott Stapp said: “We don’t have anything planned after that right now. It’s baby steps.” But he wouldn’t rule it out.

Justin Hawkins hits the road… without The Darkness

The effervescent frontman of The Darkness is taking his hugely popular podcast Justin Hawkins Rides Again on tour for the first time. Expect humour and insight in equal amounts. As an audience member, this is also your once in a lifetime opportunity to have a song that you wrote analysed by Justin on stage during a live music clinic. Can you handle it?

New music from The Kinks, and the band to re-form?

Kinks mainman Ray Davies says the collection of around 20 songs that he mentioned back in 2018 were “shelved” for a variety of reasons, but now he and brother Dave are in a position where, potentially, they could work together on the new material and, if successful, consider putting the band back together. “Ray and I have spoken about it – it’s possible!” Dave told The Independent .

The Damned reunite with Rat Scabies

Original drummer Rat Scabies has rejoined The Damned, alongside Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible and Paul Gray, reuniting the line-up that last played together in 1989. An 11-date UK tour begins in Newcastle on December 4. Besides the usual Damned standards, the set-list will revisit material from their third, fourth and fifth albums: Machine Gun Etiquette, The Black Album and Strawberries .

New bands on the rise

Rock’s lifeblood continues to pump away with gusto. Headed your way in 2024 are: Bad Nerves, The Hot Damn!, Black Smoke Trigger, South Of Salem, Brave Rival, The Gems, Lucifer, Kira Mac, Taylor McCall, Moon City Masters, Zach Person, Hannah Wicklund, Kit Trigg, These Wicked Rivers, Lions In The Street, Gen & The Degenerates, The Karma Effect, Dan Byrne and many more, both known and as yet unknown.

Yet more hot new albums

There’ll be something to cater for pretty much everyone’s taste among the new albums lined up for 2024, including Pearl Jam’s next LP (produced by Andrew Watt), Hell, Fire And Damnation from metal masters Saxon in January, Be Right Here from Blackberry Smoke in February, Stories From Time And Space from Hawkwind in April, and UFO singer Phil Mogg has finished his new solo album, Mogg’s Motel . Dream Theater will be back with Mike Portnoy back on the drum stool once again, and the Alter Bridge duo of Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy also hit the solo trail (separately, of course).

Elsewhere there’s an embarrassment of riches from Nightwish, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, Ace Frehley, W.A.S.P, Blondie, Sheryl Crow, FM, Magnum, The Wildhearts, Feeder, Steve Hackett, Lenny Kravitz, Kris Barras, Warren Haynes, Gun, Dan Patlansky, The Pineapple Thief, His Lordship, Hellacopters, Bokassa, The Lazys, The Cold Stares, Tuk Smith and many, many more.

And yet more tours

Once again, expect the full diversity of rock music to be pumped out live from stages big and small over the coming 12 months. Dates confirmed so far for include Nickelback, Tool, The Pretenders, Jane’s Addiction, The Hives, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Y&T, Manic Street Preachers, Yes, Joanne Shaw Taylor, The Gaslight Anthem, Jethro Tull, British Lion, Dirty Honey, Lucinda Williams, 10cc, Depeche Mode, Margo Price, Crowded House, Within Temptation, Beaux Gris Gris & The Apocalypse and more. Oh, and Toto will be back, too! Get along to see some of them – support live music, and have fun.

Some big, big anniversaries to celebrate

As usual, anniversaries will continue to be big business, with either album reissues or via themed tours from those artists still able to do so. Albums due to celebrate birthdays include (in no particular order): Deep Purple’s Burn , the self-titled debuts from Bad Company, Rush and Kiss, Get Your Wings by Aerosmith, Big Country’s Steeltown , Second Helping by Lynyrd Skynyrd, Sheer Heart Attack and Queen II by Queen, Feats Don’t Fail Me Now by Little Feat, Robin Trower’s Bridge Of Sighs , Bowie’s Diamond Dogs, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis, Steely Dan’s Pretzel Logic, Relayer by Yes, Judas Priest’s Rocka Rolla and Irish Tour ’74 from the late, great Rory Gallagher.

Tickets for tour will go on sale to the general public on Friday (Feb. 16) between 9-10 a.m. local time; click here for more ticketing information.

The European swing follows AC/DC’s long-awaited return to the stage last year at the all-star hard rock Power Trip festival in Indio, California. The band began teasing their 2024 return on socials last week, posting images of a lightning bolt and a countdown cued to a snippet of “Are You Ready” from 1990’s The Razors Edge .

Power Up marked the return of singer Johnson, who had stepped aside while touring in 2016 due to hearing-loss issues, with Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses filling in for 22 shows; the tour also saw the band reunited with drummer Phil Rudd after a stint in rehab. The band did not tour in support of Power Up after the seven-leg, 17-month-long stadium outing in support of Rock or Bust .

See the band’s announcement and the tour dates below.

We are thrilled to finally announce the ‘POWER UP’ European Tour. Angus, Brian, Stevie, and Matt will be joined by Chris Chaney to carry the torch for Cliff. (1/2) — AC/DC (@acdc) February 12, 2024
