Six Reasons Why Going To Gigs Alone Is The Best
So you want to go see that metalcore band you love but none of your friends like that “shouty” music? Or you REALLY want to go check out that new artist on TikTok you discovered but all your mates won’t go to a gig where they only know one song? Or worse, your group of friends cannot get themselves organized and work out which show and when to go on a tour, so you’re worried you’ll miss out on tickets. Let them be miserable and start living your best life by going to concerts by yourself. Trust us, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do!
Going to gigs alone can be daunting. What am I going to do with myself in between sets? Are people going to think I’m weird? Why would I not want to share the experience?
Listen, we are all for sharing the experience, but sometimes it’s either missing out or going alone, and in those cases we definitely recommend going alone. Here’s a few reasons why you’ll never regret it once you build up the courage to go through with it.
1 . See artists you really REALLY want to see
Imagine the FOMO of missing your favourite band on their new tour, hearing all those new songs live, seeing everyone post about it. Don’t let that happen, and get that ticket. Plus you then get to tell the pals who didn’t want to come how you saw that band or artist before they blew up or how they played that one B-side track that everyone loves – now who has FOMO?
2. Meet new friends
It’s no secret that music brings people together. That moment when everyone’s favourite ballad hits and there’s not a dry eye in the building, you turn to your left or right and suddenly you bond with a stranger over your favourite song. For the metalheads, we also recommend mosh pits, follow the rules of the pit but what a way to make new friends!
3. The freedom
Now hear us out – but going to a gig alone means you can get to the venue when you want, you can go to the loos when you want, you can stand in line at the merch for hours and no one will ask if you’re sure you want to wait. And no one will drag you home when you want to wait after the show has finished and find every piece of confetti or ask for the setlist.
4 . It’s a cult
You are not alone in going to gigs by yourself, you’d probably be surprised by how many people do the same thing. Some fan groups even have entire sub cultures of going to gigs alone (shoutout to Frank Turner’s solo armada, we see you!) – bringing us back to reason #2, new friends.
5. Confidence boost
Going to a gig by yourself will do wonders for your confidence. Sure the first time might feel a bit awkward and weird, but isn’t it always? Remember your first day of school? And then it was kind of okay after a while (let’s ignore our teenage years…) Once you’ve done it and experience all of the divinity of a solo gig you’ll feel free as a bird.
6. Experience the music your way
Whether you love hanging out by the bar, need to be front row, prefer seats or want to leave a bit earlier to catch the last train – the world is your oyster! The experience is yours, you don’t need to coordinate with someone else, rely on them to enjoy the show as much as you are and have as much of a good time as you are. And frankly, if you took a chance on a new genre or new artist and it isn’t your vibe, you can just go home. Glorious.

- READ MORE: The seven tours we want turned into movies
Viagogo’s first annual year in review reported a 41 per cent increase in fans purchasing tickets for events abroad compared to 2022.
Punters from over 90 countries, including Bermuda, Brazil, Singapore and South Africa, bought tickets on viagogo to see Beyoncé ’s record-breaking ‘ Renaissance ’ tour when it touched down in London in May while supporters from over 40 countries bought tickets to experience The Ashes over the summer.
Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour made Tottenham Hotspur Stadium the second most in-demand venue in the country, based on tickets purchased on viagogo, beaten only by Wembley Stadium which hosted gigs from the likes of The Weeknd , Harry Styles and Blur .
“London has always been a hotspot for great live music and competitive sport and that’s especially clear in 2023, as we’re seeing record numbers of fans travelling in to share the magic,” said viagogo Global MD, Cris Miller.

“The UK has been experiencing a resurgence in live events. Fans globally are leveraging our platform to plan holidays to get to these gigs. The knock-on effect of these memorable moments has a positive impact on local businesses and shows the growing demand for these in-person experiences.”
The ten most in-demand artists based on tickets sold on viagogo and StubHub for events in the UK in 2023, as of 1 December 2023, is as follows.
1. Beyoncé 2. Harry Styles 3. The Weeknd 4. Coldplay 5. Elton John 6. Bruce Springsteen 7. Chris Brown 8. Madonna 9. P!NK 10. Arctic Monkeys
Elsewhere, for the first time since the NFL started playing matches in the UK 16 years ago, a majority of the supporters at both Wembley and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium came from the UK, with just 42 per cent coming from abroad. Fans still travelled in from more than 74 countries though, helping NFL matches become some of the most popular sporting events in 2023, according to viagogo ticket sales.
The top ten most popular UK sporting events of 2023 are as follows:
1. The Championships, Wimbledon (tennis) 2. Formula 1 British Grand Prix (motorsport) 3. Jacksonville Jaguars vs Buffalo Bills – NFL London Games 2023 (American Football) 4. ICC World Test Championship – Australia v India (cricket) 5. Wales vs England – Guinness Six Nations 2023 (rugby union) 6. KSI vs Tommy Fury (boxing) 7. Baltimore Ravens vs Tennessee Titans – NFL London Games 2023 (American Football) 8. The Open Championship (golf) 9. England vs France – Guinness Six Nations 2023 (rugby union) 10. Atlanta Falcons vs Jacksonville Jaguars – NFL London Games 2023 (American Football)
Looking ahead to 2024, viagogo ticket sales for Taylor Swift ’s upcoming UK leg of her Eras Tour are already tracking at 50 per cent more than Beyoncé achieved in all of 2023. Ticket sales for her Wembley Stadium shows have already claimed three spaces on viagogo’s list of the ten most anticipated shows in the UK for 2024, with Foo Fighters ’ gigs at London Stadium and Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground also ranking in the top ten.
According to viagogo data, British performers make up 50 per cent of the most sought-after tickets in the UK in 2024, with Take That , Liam Gallagher , Depeche Mode , Bring Me The Horizon and Eric Clapton claiming five of the 10 most popular tickets for UK events.
The UK’s Most In-Demand Artists for 2024 are as follows:

Coldplay announce 2023 UK & European dates for the Music Of The Spheres World Tour!
The morning after completing their triumphant run of six sold out nights at London’s Wembley Stadium, Coldplay have today announced further European and UK stadium shows for their Music Of The Spheres World Tour in Summer 2023.
The dates include the tour’s first visits to Portugal , Spain , Italy , Switzerland , Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands , alongside UK shows in Manchester and Cardiff . Since the band’s record-breaking tour began in Costa Rica in March 2022, more than four million tickets have been sold for the dates in Latin America, North America and Europe, which have attracted rave reviews from fans and critics alike (as per the recent praise for the Wembley shows above).
The tour has also been heralded for its groundbreaking set of sustainability initiatives which include a show powered by 100% renewable energy in almost all locations; the world’s first tourable battery system (made from 40 BMW electric car batteries); power bikes and kinetic dancefloors allowing fans to help power the show; solar panels and wind turbines at every venue; a pledge to cut tour emissions by 50%; incentives to encourage fans to travel by green transport; and one tree planted for every ticket sold.
Full info at sustainability.coldplay.com .
The new tour dates were teased via Easter eggs in the band’s new video for Humankind (taken from their number one album, Music Of The Spheres ) which premiered last week. To the excitement of the band’s eagle-eyed global following, the video also hinted at further shows being announced for south-east Asia and North America. Tickets for the new European and UK shows will go on sale at 10am local time on Thursday, 25 August. Full details can be found at coldplay.com/tour . MAY 2023

The best UK outdoor concert series for 2023
Beattie on a bandstand, Primal in the park, Hozier in Halifax… the best open-air concert series around the UK this summer
Summer is all about taking things you usually do indoors and doing them outdoors instead. Drinks on the veranda, steaks on the barbecue, dinner on the patio, baths in the paddling pool… wait… what? You know what else is great outdoors? No! Stop that. Gigs! For those now lacking the stamina for an entire festival weekend, the last decade has seen an explosion of the festival’s close cousin: the outdoor gig series. After all, the only thing better than one outdoor gig is a load of outdoor gigs. These balmy nights of big-name shows have grown massively in popularity, popping up in all sorts of lovely locations, from parks to seaside resorts to stately homes. Here are a few of the best outdoor concert series for summer 2023 and beyond.
All Points East
The lovely folks behind APE are better than most when it comes to curating a line-up. A lot of consideration has clearly gone into crafting the vibe for each day of this year’s run in Victoria Park. Stormzy’s This Is What We Mean organisation has an entire day, bringing along Kehlani, Sampha, Ms Banks and loads more. The Strokes with The Yeah Yeah Yeahs is a 00s paradise, while Haim with Confidence Man, Tove Lo and Girl In Red has summer bliss written all over it. Let’s not forget Field Day either. Bonobo, Aphex Twin and Fever Ray might be the best electronic line-up to ever grace the UK. Victoria Park, London | 18 – 28 August | Get tickets
Brighton Valley Series
Tom Jones, N-Dubz, Paolo Nutini and Nile Rogers & Chic all headline a poptastic schedule at Stanmer Park, just down the road from the Amex Stadium. Stamner Park, Brighton | 5 – 9 July | Get tickets
Where once there was Hard Rock Calling, now there’s British Summer Time (BST to its mates). The line-up gets bigger every year, although it’s hard to see how they’ll ever go bigger than Billy Joel, P!nk (twice), Bruce Springsteen (twice), Take That, Guns N’ Roses, Lana del Rey and Blackpink. Hyde Park, London | 23 June – 9 July | Get tickets
Cardiff Bay Series
Brighton Valley’s dancier cousin comes to Alexandra Bay in September with Scooter, The Chemical Brothers, The Streets and N-Dubz. You’ll need a helmet to protect you from all those shapes being thrown. Alexandra Bay, Cardiff | 6 – 9 September | Get tickets
Live At The Piece Hall
Halifax’s Piece Hall is an 18th century cloth hall now reborn as one of the country’s best outdoor venues. A long list of shows runs right into August, covering every base possible with Orbital, boygenius, James, Limp Bizkit, The Cult, Sting, George Ezra, The Lumineers, The Charlatans and more. The Piece Hall, Halifax | Now – 26 August | Get tickets
Lytham Festival
What began life as the Lytham Proms has grown exponentially into one of the highlights of the summer on the North West coast. This years boasts the return of space cowboy Jamiroquai, the soothing baritone of George Ezra, more hair and leather than Game Of Thrones with Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe, a new wave bill from heaven with Blondie supporting Sting and era-spanning pop titan Lionel Richie. Lytham Green, Lytham St-Annes | 28 June – 2 July | Get tickets
Margate Summer Series
The concert series that has audiences literally in Dreamland. Margate Summer Series is that rare opportunity to see massive acts and also go on a few rides in between. A well-laid-out site also gives a compact feel to proceedings, so you feel up close and personal with the likes of Tom Jones, Primal Scream, Olly Murs, McFly, Bastille and more. It’s a summer holiday and a gig all in one. Dreamland, Margate | Now – 30 September | Get tickets
Scarborough Open Air Theatre
Scarborough’s neatly laid-out theatre is a perfect amphitheatre. It’s tiered sections mean you actually get to see Dermot Kennedy, Pulp, Hollywood Vampires and the like, and not just the sunburnt neck of the really tall bloke in front of you. Scarborough, Yorkshire | Now – 23 August | Get tickets
Somerset House Summer Series
This gorgeous series by the Strand is known for going beyond the obvious in search of its headliners. This year is another great example, with Young Fathers, Interpol, Gabriels, beabadoobee, Greentee Peng and more. Somerset House, London | 6 – 16 July | Get tickets
Sounds Of The City
This annual series offers city centre shows in Manchester and Leeds, with headliners including Blossoms, The Lathums, McFly, Morrissey and more. Castlefield Bowl, Manchester and Millenium Square, Leeds | 29 June – 12 July | Get tickets
South Facing
Crystal Palace Park has one of the richest musical histories of any green space in the country and South Facing has played a massive role in bringing live music back to the park. This year sees Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, First Aid Kit, Primal Scream and more to the historic bowl. Crystal Palace Park, London | 28 July – 13 August | Get tickets
Summer Nights At The Bandstand
Last but not least, we head north of the border for the annual outdoor shindig at Kelvingrove Bandstand. A top-notch line-up includes headliners Siouxsie, Anastacia, Glasvegas, Jack Savoretti, Squeeze, Callum Beattie, Sophie Ellis Bextor and more. And it’s not really summer in Scotland unless Del Amitri show up, which they will. Twice! Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow | 25 July – 12 August | Get tickets

Christmas days out you'll want to add to the diary ASAP
The countdown to Christmas is officially on
Christmas at Kew, Richmond
Christmas at Kew celebrates its 10-year anniversary this year, so naturally organisers were going to plan something extra special to mark the occasion. Along with a series of new installations for 2023 including one of the longest tunnels to ever feature at the event, the stunning Palm House light show and the Temperate House lights are once again a must-see.
When: Until 7 January
Skate at Somerset House with Switzerland Tourism, London
After you’re greeted by the 40ft Christmas tree as you step into Somerset House’s famous courtyard, you’ll find one of the best ice skating rinks in London. This year you can expect a rink side DJ, while the Skate Lounge is being taken over by Whispering Angel who will be serving Mulled Angel Rosé as well as new twists on classic cocktails, including an Angels Margarita and Rosé Negroni.
When: Until 14 January
Festive pop-ups, various
Brought to you by the Experimental Group, Miracle is the kitsch festive pop-up bar nestled in the Henrietta Hotel in Covent Garden. It’s a small space and table time is limited to an hour and 45 minutes, but the retro decorations and punchy cocktails which include the Christmapolitan and Snowball Old Fashioned, more than make up for it. Bar Hutte, which has locations in Manchester and Liverpool features cosy huts decked out with rustic furnishings and fairy lights and, most importantly, karaoke machines. The ski lodge pop-up at the Montague Hotel Hotel in London is also back and you can sip on mulled wine, spiced cider or schnapps while pretending you’re thawing out in the Alps. Santé!
When: Until early January
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, London
A guaranteed good time in the capital, Winter Wonderland is back with the UK’s largest ice rink, -10C ice bar, a Scandinavian-themed Market Square, fairground rides and endless street food stalls. This year also sees the return of the Magical Ice Kingdom where you can design your own ice sculptures. It’s open from 10am-10pm and you'll easily be able to while away an entire day there.
When: Until 1 January
Secret Cinema Wishmas, London
If you’re after the ultimate immersive experience, then it’s Secret Cinema every single time. Although shrouded in secrecy as usual, what we do know is that it’s named 'Wishmas’ and it will be answering the question: ‘Where do all your wishes go?’ It's taking place at The Old Bauble Factory under Waterloo station and is perfect for a family day out.
Christmas at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire
Blenheim Palace will take your breath away without being enveloped in Christmas goodness, so imagine what it’s like with a festive makeover and more than a million twinkling lights. As well as the return of the Christmas Market hosting artisan food and drink sellers in wintry wooden chalets in the Great Court, you can explore the Sleeping Beauty-themed palace rooms. And for the main event? That’s the illuminated trail which weaves through the gorgeous grounds, lighting up the lake and South Lawn.
Christmas At... Light Trails, various
The Christmas At… Light Trails will be taking place at five different locations this year, including Walmer Castle, Wrest Park, Eltham Palace and Kenwood House in Hampstead Heath, which will be undergoing a wintery Christmas transformation for the third time. After walking around the gardens and winding woodland paths lit up by brightly coloured lights and lasers, warm yourself up with mince pies and mulled wine.
Winter terraces, various
We love a winter terrace just as much as we love a summer one, and there are loads of fun locations popping up again this November and December. Wagtail will be transforming their rooftop terrace into a Nordic-themed oasis with bookable private heated igloos, along with a delicious seasonal menu and Grey Goose cocktails. A brand new terrace is also launching at Chinese fusion restaurant Tattu London - think ultimate cosy vibes with fur throws, fairy lights and icicles, while Lodge d’Argent returns to the rooftop of Coq d'Argent .
Glow Wild at Wakehurst, Sussex
When one of your main festive features is the UK’s tallest living Christmas tree, you have a lot to boast about. Not only can you marvel at the dramatic 37m tall tree with 1,800 energy-saving light bulbs, it also features one of the UK’s largest outdoor art installations. Celebrating its 10th birthday, this year’s theme is all about moments in the natural world.
The Natural History Museum, London
For one night only, you can explore the South Kensington museum after hours this Christmas. Armed with a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie, enjoy the world famous exhibitions as well as winter workshops and other seasonal fun. You can also spoil little ones with their Storytelling with Santa sessions, which are running from 11-23 December.
When: Until 23 December
Pergola Paddington, London
Pergola Paddington really said go big or go home when it comes to this year’s entertainment. The upper floor has been transformed into a truly OTT winter forest, while downstairs has undergone an alpine wonderland makeover. Festive treats come in the shape of bottomless winter brunches, Christmas movie screenings and candlelit gospel choice performances. And of course the bar will be overflowing with mulled wine, hot toddies, and boozy hot chocolates.
When: Until the end of December
Warner Bros. Studio Tour, Hertfordshire
Step into a festive wonderland with the return of Hogwarts in the Snow. Diagon Alley, the Great Hall, Hagrid’s Hut and the Forbidden Forest will all be undergoing a dreamy Christmas makeover. And, for two days only, Dinner in the Great Hall returns to offer fans exclusive after-hours access to the Studio Tour. Enjoy a drinks reception before recreating IRL Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone scenes with your own two-course dinner and after hours tour.
When: Hogwarts in the Snow: Until 14 January / Dinner in the Great Hall: 12 - 13 December
Bath turns into a magical festive destination every Christmas, and this year is no different. This November, the award-winning Christmas market, featuring over 160 cosy wooden chalets, returns to the history city centre, while Winter Wonderland at Wookey Hole will boast a Santa’s Grotto, Christmas Circus Show as well as 100,000 twinkling lights transforming the caves. If you’re planning a trip to the Bath on Ice rink, don’t forget to drop by the heated alpine bar or enjoy a game of miniature golf with glow in the dark balls.
Christmas at Langan’s, London
In the mood for a little bit of luxe? Then look no further than Langan’s in London’s Mayfair. The brasserie has partnered with Nyetimber to transform the iconic spot into a Gstaad-inspired wonderland this season. The impressive festive menu features Norfolk Bronze free-range turkey and traditional Christmas puds, while entertainment comes in the form of a Santa’s Grotto and a pop-up Sunday cinema catering for adults and kids.
A festive afternoon tea
The Orchid Lounge at Pan Pacific London has embraced festivities with a sea of vibrant coloured Christmas trees (yes, plural), dainty festive ornaments and two delicious festive afternoon teas. The Traditional Delights is comprised of a selection of sandwiches and scones, while the Kopi Tiam tea features buns and dumplings. Both finish with cute miniature Christmassy treats including the Festive Forest made up of Biscoff, pecan and apple. Also make sure you check out the Christmas ‘tree’ located just outside the hotel which is made entirely of recycled emerald-green glass and mirrored cubes.
Kimpton Fitzroy Hotel Christmas Dinner
If you’re feeling fancy and don’t want the hassle of cooking (or arguing with relatives over the cooking) on Christmas Day, then the Kimpton Fitzroy London, an IHG Hotels & Resort Hotel, is putting on a delicious three-course meal. Starters include wild mushroom soup and marinated salmon, while sea bass and miso glazed aubergine is on offer as a main alongside turkey and all the trimmings. Throughout December they’ll be serving mulled wine, and don’t forget to snap a picture alongside their incredible Christmas tree.
When: Christmas Day
Warwick Castle’s Christmas offering is always a joy, with a market, light trail, ice rink and a chance to meet the big man himself in the castle library all on offer. But there’s also a lot more festive goodness on offer in the rest of Warwick, including the market in its historic Market Square which features everything from vintage stalls to street food or why not head over to The Lord Leycester for a wreath-making workshop.
Four Seasons Hotel, Hampshire
Ok, so while we know lots of the UK's top hotels will be getting into the festive spirit this winter, none will be doing it much better than the Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire who will be offering up a selection of Christmas movie worthy-moments for guests, like a pantomime, a festive afternoon tea and other treats from their ski lodge restaurant, Off Piste. And let’s not forget about the crackling log fires where you can unwind with a glass of mulled wine. Sounds ideal.
