The Complete Guide For New York City First-Timers 2022

The bustling Big Apple, Manhattan, the epicentre of the American Dream, and famed setting of F.R.I.E.N.D.S — it’s New York, New York. If you’re thinking about giving this Concrete Jungle a shot, here’s everything you need to know about travelling to the City of Dreams this summer.

New York City is synonymous with yellow taxis, Broadway musicals, the blinding lights at Times Square, and so-cliché-it’s-good I LOVE NY logos plastered on kitschy souvenirs. As over-hyped and touristy as you might think it is, the city still charms over 66 million visitors a year. In this guide, we’ll be exploring why. From galleries in SoHo to a conserved railway station all the way up in the mountains of Catskills, there definitely is something for everyone in New York City. So New York City first-timers, rest assured. Here’s all you need to know before stepping into one of your best adventures yet! Run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), New York’s rail and bus system is better known as the MTA NYC Transit . It is an affordable way of getting around and most New Yorkers commute via the Subway.

If you’re not a fan of the underground, buses are a great alternative. Here are some tips: 👉🏻 All city buses utilise the MetroCard and/or an exact coin change payment 👉🏻 With a single fare, you’ll be able to travel any distance till the end of the allocated route 👉🏻 All buses run at a 5 to 15 minutes interval 🚨 PLUS: From 10 pm to 5 am, local and express buses will stop wherever you ask them to!

New York’s subway has made quite a name for itself with its iconic typography that is recognisable even from afar. Here are some tips: 👉🏻 Operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 👉🏻 Single rides allow you to use the subway citywide, and transfer to any other line as many times as you like — as long as you do not exit the gantry 👉🏻 Transferring from the subway to a local bus or vice versa within a two-hour time limit using the pay-per-ride MetroCard is possible as well!

🇺🇸 4. Best Places To Stay For New York City First-Timers

You will first need to pick one of the five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

Located just a stone’s throw away from New York City’s gems (i.e. Central Park, the Empire State Building, MOMA, and Times Square) is Midtown Manhatten. Expect a bustling nightlife on 9th Avenue, and a ton of food trucks at your disposal, at any time of the day, on 6th Avenue. Don’t miss out: Morgan Library & Museum

Harlem, Upper Manhattan

One of the most affordable districts in flashy Manhattan, Harlem is known for its amazing culture and heritage that is heavily influenced by African American History. If you’re a seeker of culture, or perhaps an old soul in the mood for some good ol’ hearty jazz — Harlem is your destination. Don’t miss out: The world-famous Apollo Theater

Did you know SoHo is short for South of Houston Street ? Once known for factories and industries, the district earned itself the nickname “Hell’s Hundred Acres.” Fast forward to today, Soho is home to one of the richest art scenes in the world. You’ll adore the vibrant street art hidden at every corner, and the wide selection of museums and renowned loft-style galleries.

Don’t miss out: The antique diner, Fanelli Café

🇺🇸 5. Best Weekend Getaways For New York City First-Timers

Since we’ve got a month here, why not take one weekend off to explore the surrounding attractions that this city has to offer? Scroll down for some weekend getaway inspo.

Washington, D.C (4-hour drive)

new york tour singapore

Washington is a playground for history students and junkies alike — there’s the Smithsonian museum, US Capitol, plus loads of other monuments and memorials that will take you back to America’s founding days. However, don’t miss out on the city’s vibrant arts and nightlife scene. Think farmers’ markets, modern day exhibits, and, of course, a show at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. If you’re visiting in the month of April, you’ll get treated to cherry blossoms season along the Tidal Basin. Perfect!

Beacon, New York (2-hour drive)

new york tour singapore

Flee the hustle and bustle of the city with a days’ trip to Beacon, located in the heart of the Hudson Valley. Following the conversion of the former Nabisco box-printing factory to a contemporary art museum back in 2003, came a wave of galleries, farm-to-table restaurants, movie theatres, one-of-a-kind flea markets, and gems run by small businesses. Be sure to set some time aside for Beacon’s breathtaking parks and hiking trails.

Catskills, New York (2-hour drive)

new york tour singapore

About a hundred miles from NYC, west of the Hudson River, you’ll find yourself in the picture-perfect town of Catskills. While being absolutely free of any unnecessary manmade bells and whistles, the town instead finds its worth in the hills, rivers, and a 700,000-acre forest preserve. For rest days in town, visit the handful of museums such as the Empire State Railway Museum for reminiscent memories of train whistles echoing through the mountainscape.

Top 5 airlines serving from new york to singapore.

Awesome as always. I wish though the cabin for premium was upgraded.... Same old sane old :(

Seating cramped; close to toilet, foul smelling and noisy, very unhygienic and disease risk Free and paid Wi-Fi NOT accessible at all - misleading advertising Very expensive sunglasses disappeared from back seat pouch. Coffee disgusting and cold

Wonderful service, planes and interior in great condition, very pleasant experience

Every thing was fine. Some ild classical Hindi movies should be add

The premium economy seats were not that great. It could have been more premium than economy seats.

People were so nice! Economy seats were small and cramped feeling for me. I’m slender and 6 feet tall

The singapore airline now compared before covid, I like the service before covid. SQ was the best of all airlines but now I am going to look for different airline if I am travelling in asia.

Perfect experience from boarding through to leaving the flight, comfortable and personalised service from all staff, highly recommended

They close their counter so early. I had internet issues so I couldn’t check In online . I would have made the flight but their counter was closed 5 minutes before we arrived. No way of contacting them even though I had the confirmation number and tried to check in the night before on someone else’s phone. I tried calling their customer service with no pick up. Horrible experience, I’m very unhappy with them. I hope to never fly with them ever again. It costed me almost $900.

Even though it was a very full flight, the service was still excellent, the plane did not feel too cramped and cabin crew made a sincere effort to help passengers find overhead space for stowing luggage.

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

The helpful attitude of the staff, and being a wheelchair passenger everyone was helpful and understanding. The trip was made comfortable by the upgraded seat which was given without my request, that was a great surprise. Thank you Delta.

Everything went well with the flight. But one of the flight attendants had on inappropriate pants. She had on an old worn out pair of sweat pants. The back seam was unrivaled and should not have been worn for work. If I had not seen her in the airport with the standard type of luggage, I certainly would not have thought she was working for Delta. Not a good look at all for representation.

Great!! I haven’t had a bad experience with them.

The plane was one hour late cause they were doing some reparations with us on the plane no mention I was in the first seat and the door was open the entire time with 8 degrees! The plane was totally dirty no mention old ! The staff was nice but no put together, the attention to details and passenger experience is missing and i always travel first !!! Is better the lounge than the plane! KLM/air France every details is taken care maybe you need a creative creator or experience client need asap was terrible and not memorable for the price that I payed very dissatisfied

Boarding super slow with people allowed to linger in aisles

We flew early evening on New Year's Eve. Our plane was less than half full... Great for the passenger experience -- not so much for the airline lol. Comfortable, spacious, smooth flight -- and early arrival!

First time travel in economy and the worst experience I ever had ! Shame on paying 600 dollars to be in a tuna can ! Service was terrible no even water no even class no even matters your flight attendants were lazy and sloppy very bad experience! After all these years traveling in first and once I try this cause I need to go to a destination for an emergency wow shame on you !

Really impressive staff at airport and on plane, especially given how busy it was

The upgrade was a pleasant surprise and I was sooooo tired of traveling these days. 10/10 just for that

It was good no problems made it on time for the next flight overseas!

The made us waiting and held our passports and boarding pass making us miss our flights

Not impressed. Only allowed one carry on on such a long flight.

The flight was good but my neighbor had the vent open full power for the whole flight and because the air was blowing from the side instead of from the top and I got very cold and ended up with a sore throat.

Bad experience with the delay n long wait time for connecting flight after missing the connection flight from Doha.

Wore experience due to delay and took me 3 days to reach my destination.

All over with Qatar airlines my experience was really bad due to delays and then putting me on different airlines and after 8 hours of wait I had to listen to their is no plane to fly for another 24 hours. Wore experience ever.

Excellent will be flying again in May with Qatar. to Botswana.

Ultimate customer care humble and excellent service oriented crew , perfect timing maintained by the crew . My profound appreciation.

Asian Veng meal have Non Veg items which is not ok. Pure veg meals option are too less and they have inclusion of Vedgan and Lactos etc... which is taste less

Quality of service on board was very inconsistent. FA service primarily seemed robotic and they barely engaged with passengers

I’m unclear why I had to pay extra for assigned seats as Turkish airlines did not honor the seating. We were placed across the aisle from each other on TK 34, and were seated behind one another on TK 694. Because my name was misspelled on e-ticket (Klawiter, instead of Klawitter) I could not log onto website to get the connection gate number in Istanbul. The monitors in the airport were a jumbled mess 1/2 Arabic and 1/2 English.

On line check in needs a lot of improvement. I tried and gave up.

Food not good, flight attendants not the best, not accommodating very ruff

the female flight attendant was racist towards me. I could tell she treated the two other passengers next to me with more softness.

Oh my god! For an13 hour flight they serve you food just one time. Also don’t be thirsty they give you a little small cup of soda to drink. They seem like their goal is to feed you one so they don’t have to be bothered with you. It quite surprise for such a long flight there are several times to eat at least three and the food was well lackluster. The food and lack of offering drinks which were always hot no ice provided.

The food could be better. The service was okay. Could have done more to provide water throughout the flight.

We were traveling first class. Checkin counter lady and her manager, both were in bad mood and did not treat us well about checking in the handbag. The gate agent took care of it right away. I travel Turkish twice a year in first class. No one has ever refused to check in the hand bag. Not sure, why this agent and her manager refused. Everything else was excellent.

The 787 economy was a disaster for long haul. The space was too little compared to 777 or 747. Also the extremely low tray table behind the seat made any dining effort a nightmare. However, the movies were up to date, and the food taste was good, despite of terrible serving process caused by small space.

A little bit more comfort. It’s tight space around the seats. But all else is great and a smooth flight!

EWR terminal C United Club is great. Flight and everything else mediocre

737 Max was leaking water into the cabin through the windows. Overhead bins opened on landing. Bad bad plane.

Very bad , airplain had problem with engines , had to evacuate, had a delay on my trip for almost 4 hours , lost my rental car in london..

Other than the two hour delay, it was fine. Of course they were very professional and kept us informed throughout the whole delay..

Easy boarding in group 2. Landed 1/2 hr early. Delicious cookie snack.

Good. The wife was not working but then it got resolved.

Missed this flight due to delays from my previous flight

Easy peasy. Crew was great. Take-off and landing nice anc chill (good job by the pilot). Thank you UA!

The plane was delayed coming in and on the tarmac. I was coming from another flight so it made for a very long day. The stewardess kept trying to slam the overhead bins closed and I was worried that she had damaged my new luggage. They ran out of snacks and lccdsddd me a hummus box which was nice. It took them a very long time to pick up the garbage so I could not go to the washroom and had little time. To prepare for disbarment. The TV system was hard to control from the armrest and picture wasn’t clear. The crew did apologize several times for the lateness. It took the Denver airport an unusually long time to de-ice the plane.

Another late flight from United. We never got the exact reason why. When we got on the plane, the staff seemed to spend a very long time just milling around in the front of the plane. I also never figured out why the door to the cockpit was open for so long prior to leaving. All in all just a poor performance again from United. There is a reason we did not choose United for the international legs of this recent trip, overall dissatisfaction.

Narita Airport while transiting between Singapore and New York

Our experience flying from Singapore to New York during the pandemic

avatar

We have just arrived in New York City! After close to 2 years, we are finally on the road again as travel is restarting around the world.

We know that it is difficult and worrying to travel in these times. Therefore, we’ve documented our entire experience travelling from Singapore to New York City, USA. As Singapore reopens its borders through the new VTL schemes , we hope to show people that travelling is possible now and is not as daunting as one might make it out to be.

For our trip, JS is flying a transit flight between Singapore and New York with a stopover in Tokyo. M on the other hand is taking the 18 hours long direct flight between the two cities. In our article, we will be giving a fair comparison between the two different flying options.

As the pandemic is a fast-evolving event, information changes quickly. All information given in this blog post is correct as of the time of writing. Please check the included links for the most updated travel information.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements into the US are comparatively relaxed as compared to most other countries.

There are no quarantine requirements regardless of vaccination statuses and most forms of Covid-19 tests are accepted including the faster ART tests .

COVID tests

Both M and I decided to take the ART Covid test as it’s a much faster and cheaper option. Do note that you DO NOT need a PCR test for entry into the US.

There are many clinics around the island that offers ART tests for travel. However, make sure to check with the clinic that they are able to provide an official results certificate.

We had ours done at Minmed clinic. They have clinics all around the island at accessible locations. Remember to make a booking through their site to prevent waiting in line for your turn.

The test costs S$30 (US$22) . I was in and out of the clinic in less than 10 minutes. I received the official test results in my email inbox within the hour. Remember to print out the results slip and make several copies for redundancy.

Experience at Changi Airport

Empty Changi Airport Singapore departure hall before our flight to New York City, USA.

Changi Airport has seen a drastic decrease in passenger traffic ever since the pandemic started. As one would expect, most shops in the terminal were either closed or undergoing renovation.

We’d recommend arriving at the airport 3 hours before your scheduled flight to err on the side of caution. Due to countries’ increased restrictions, our check-in process at the counter took a much longer time even though the queue was shorter.

Changi Airport empty departure hall before our flight to New York City, USA.

While checking in, airline staff will check for your flight, visa and COVID-19 test results. Remember to keep your COVID-19 test results even after this check especially if you’re taking a transit flight. The airline staff will check your test results again before your second segment of the flight.

Transit Area & Pre-boarding

After clearing customs, you’re free to walk around the transit area. You can visit duty-free stores, restaurants and even lounges if they are open. During our visit, most of the shops were closed, especially those selling luxury products.

Changi Airport Singapore transit area before departure.

Before M’s flight, she visited the SATS Premier Lounge at terminal 3 while I visited the SATS Premier Lounge at terminal 1.

READ HERE: SATS Premier Lounge Changi Airport Review Terminal 3

The transit area is separated into multiple zones. Zone 1 is the departure/arrival zone and Zone 2 is the general shop’s area. In Zone 1, staff are required to don on PPEs as that’s where arrival passengers will pass through.

The checkpoint in the transit area in Changi Airport Singapore that separates Zone 1 and Zone 2.

Although there are efforts to minimise interactions between arrival and departure passengers using temporary barricades, there are noticeable gaps within the zones where the 2 groups of passengers share a common space. Therefore, it is theoretically possible for an arriving passenger to infect a departing passenger.

While walking towards our departure gate in Changi Airport, there are clear barricades to separate the arriving and departing passengers.

The airport has closed off several toilets within Zone 1 to serve as doffing stations for the staff. Do not worry as there are still toilets available for passengers before their flight.

Right before the departure gate at Changi Airport Singapore.

The boarding procedure is pretty much the same as before.

Flight experience during the pandemic

Due to travel restrictions between countries, most flights around the world are still flying at a reduced capacity.

There were many completely empty rows during my flight. Flying economy, I could lie flat and get a good rest during the 23 hours long flight.

Flying on United Airlines during the pandemic.

Every passenger was given sanitising wipes and all crew members wore masks throughout the entire flight. Other than these measures, flying feels very much the same as before the pandemic.

M on the other hand flew on SIA’s premium economy class as that was the only class available in SG – NY direct flights. In a similar fashion, her flight was very empty.

Premium Economy seat of Singapore Airlines flight between Singapore and New York City, USA.

Even though the seat was much larger and comfortable, the armrest between seats cannot be lifted. Therefore, she couldn’t really lie flat during the flight. On the bright side, the seats can be lowered to the maximum without bothering other passengers at the back.

A care kit is given to all Singapore Airlines passengers during the pandemic.

In contrast to the United Airlines flight, Singapore Airlines provided every passenger with a more comprehensive care kit.

As much as possible, we will recommend flying direct as compared to flying transit. Transitting through a third country is still doable but is slightly more complicated than before. Here are some tips and tricks to take note of if you’re thinking of doing transit.

  • Make sure the country you’re thinking of transitting through is open for transit. Not every country allows that. The best way is to check the country’s official pages.
  • Do not book any transit flights that require you to change airports or terminals. This can be a cause for concern as you will have to enter the country to change airports. Most countries now have strict entry or quarantine restrictions that make entering the country infeasible.
  • Buffer more time for transit. We’ll recommend at least 3 hours.

I did my transit flight at Narita Airport Tokyo.

During the pandemic, most shops within the transit area of Narita Airport are closed.

After alighting from my first flight, I had to go through security again, followed by final paperwork checks by the airline. It’s at this point where they verified my COVID-19 test results again.

The paperwork check took a while as the staff had to verify my immigration eligibility as well as boarding pass reissue. Upon completion of the check, I was excited to explore Narita Airport and the lounges that it offers!

I had initially planned to visit both the United Club lounge and ANA lounge while I was there. The United Club Lounge was unfortunately closed during my trip. Therefore, I could only visit the ANA lounge.

Life in New York / USA

Life in the US is pretty much life pre-pandemic. There were no special mentions of Covid restrictions in the airport and people were mostly going about their lives as usual. It’s a very refreshing difference as compared to Singapore.

New York City during the pandemic is almost life back to normal.

Most people here do not wear masks outdoor as it’s not mandatory. Masks are, however, compulsory in indoor settings such as restaurants, shops and the subway.

Most restaurants around the country are very strict with regard to this. We’ve seen restaurants denying entry to patrons for not wearing masks when entering.

Covid signs in New York City subway.

If you forget to bring your mask when you head out, you can get one for free at all subway stations!

Dining in at restaurants

As mentioned earlier, it is compulsory to wear masks when entering a restaurant. Otherwise, you can be denied entry. In addition, dining in restaurants within New York State requires proof of vaccination.

For locals who were vaccinated within the state, this proof can be satisfied by downloading the Excelsior Pass mobile app .

For foreigners who were vaccinated in other countries, we can simply show a physical certificate of our vaccination or even a screenshot of the certificate.

Singaporeans in particular have multiple ways to show proof of vaccination. We can get it either through HealthHub , Notarise or Tracetogether .

Even though the pandemic has caused travel to practically come to a standstill the past year, we’re slowly starting to see trickles of it coming back. If you’re looking to start travelling again, it has never been a better time to start than now.

Although there are a lot more things to take note of from logistics to personal hygiene, we believe that it pays off to be early adopters when it comes to restarting travel. There are many benefits to travelling right now.

New York City landscape from the roof top

Air tickets are more flexible now, with many airlines introducing free schedule changes. The crowds are thinner at popular tourist destinations. Hotels across the world have slashed their prices to unbelievable rates.

From New York to Singapore: A World Tour of Iconic Theaters and Opera Houses

new york tour singapore

If you're a fan of the arts or just iconic architecture, you'll want to check out some of the world's most beautiful theaters and opera houses. From Singapore to Spain, these iconic venues offer a unique cultural experience you won't find anywhere else. So if you're looking for an unforgettable travel experience, add one (or more!) of these stunning theaters and opera houses to your itinerary!

Metropolitan Opera House

One of the most renowned theaters in the world, The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City is instantly recognizable with its series of five concrete arches and glass and bronze façade, designed by architect Jules Bouy in 1883. Built largely as a reaction to the elitism of the Academy of Music—New York's only opera house at the time—the Met's three tiers of private boxes were intended for high society and newly wealthy individuals. With a seating capacity of over 3,000, the opera house's lavishly decorated interior does not disappoint, with its gold and burgundy décor, suitably dramatic chandeliers, and a domed petal-shaped ceiling covered in gold leaves.

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Built entirely on reclaimed land on Singapore's scenic Marina Bay , Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is colloquially known as "the Durian" due to its resemblance to the popular fruit. The building houses two main theaters, the Concert Hall and the Drama Centre, along with several smaller performance spaces. Productions at the Esplanade aim to cut across cultures and genres, with 70 percent of all concerts, dance recitals, and theatrical shows free to enjoy. The dome-shaped interior plays with a geometric design, shadow, and acoustics for a full-sensory experience.

Mariinsky Theatre

The Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg is considered one of the most beautiful theaters in the world. Built in the early 1800s, it was designed by the architect Carlo Rossi in a neoclassical style as both a theater and a circus. Both the Mariinsky Ballet and Mariinsky Orchestra are based here, and the theater has seen some of the most famous names in classical music—including Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich—and ballet legends like Anna Pavlova. Today, the Mariinsky Theatre is a symbol of Russian culture and heritage and continues to be a popular St. Petersburg attraction.

Royal Opera House

Located in London’s bustling Covent Garden , the Royal Opera House—designed in 1946 by Sir Edward Lutyens—is both grand and elegant, with an operatic history that reaches back to 1732. The Royal Opera House is where visitors from across the globe come to see the Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet, two of the world’s leading performance groups. There is something for everyone to enjoy here, with an average of 150 shows per season featuring traditional opera, ballet productions, and new works from the world’s greatest artists.

Teatro Colón

Located in the heart of Buenos Aires , Teatro Colón—named after the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, or "Cristobal Colón" in Spanish—is a world-famous opera house. Built in the late 19th century, shortly after Argentina won its independence from Spain, the theater has a capacity of 2,500 and is renowned for its excellent acoustics. Teatro Colón has welcomed some of the world's greatest opera singers, and today it remains an important cultural hub of the city. Visitors can tour the theater or enjoy a performance in one of its elegant boxes. With its spectacular architecture and rich history, Teatro Colón is a must-see for anyone visiting Buenos Aires.

Palais Garnier

An iconic Paris institution, this Neo-Baroque opera house was designed by architect Charles Garnier and completed in 1875. Lavishly decorated with marble, sculptures, and paintings, it has been featured in several films, including "The Phantom of the Opera," and puts on spectacular shows courtesy of the Paris Opera. In addition to being a place of art and culture, the Palais Garnier is steeped in history. Here, composer Giacomo Puccini saw his opera, "Tosca," performed for the first time, and dancer Isadora Duncan made her debut in Paris.

Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre

The Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, designed by Yoshinobu Ashihara, is among Asia's largest theaters—and a visually striking one at that. Home to the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, the theater opened in 1966 and hosts opera, dance, drama, and other performances from Japan and abroad. A notable example of modern architecture, the theater features a sleek, modern design with clean lines and a beautiful glass façade. Fun fact: The theater boasts one of the world's largest pipe organs!

Vienna State Opera

The Vienna State Opera is one of the world's most prestigious and oldest opera houses and is where the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is based. Inaugurated in 1869 with a performance of Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," the Vienna State Opera is known for its widely-celebrated operatic performers and productions. To this day, it attracts visitors from all over the world who come to experience world-class performances or admire its Renaissance-style arches, veranda, and grand statues. Consider signing up for a 40-minute guided tour to learn more about this historic institution.

Gran Teatre del Liceu

The Gran Teatre del Liceu, located in Barcelona, Spain , is one of the world's leading opera houses and is well worth a visit for any music lover. Founded in 1847, the Liceu has a long and rich history, where famous opera singers Jaume Aragall, Maria Caniglia, and Giulietta Simionato have performed. Today, the Liceu is home to two orchestras and a chorus, presenting various operas, ballets, and concerts each season. The theater also has a museum, which documents its history and features many treasures from its past.

Teatro Amazonas

The Teatro Amazonas , located in Manaus, Brazil, is a stunning piece of architecture located in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest. Constructed in the late 19th century, at the height of the rubber boom, the theater is a masterpiece of Neo-Baroque style, with an intricate exterior and lavish interior. One of the city's main cultural landmarks, Teatro Amazonas is an excellent place to enjoy operas, ballets, and other classical performances while in town. Visitors are encouraged to tour the three-story building to explore the backstage and admire the stained-glass dome.

War Memorial Opera House

Chris06 / Wikimedia Commons

San Francisco's War Memorial Opera House is one of the most iconic buildings in the city. Established in 1923, it was designed by architect William Pereira in the Art Deco style. Some of the greatest opera singers of all time, including Placido Domingo and Renee Fleming, have performed here. The exterior of the building is covered in white terra cotta tiles, and its sweeping lines give it a graceful appearance. The opera house's interior is just as impressive, with a soaring atrium and grand marble staircase. The main auditorium has over 2,700 seats, and its acoustics are considered some of the best in the world.

Sydney Opera House

Located in Sydney Harbor, this popular tourist attraction is an iconic symbol of Australia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and perhaps one of the most outstanding examples of modern architecture. Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the Opera House was completed in 1973 and sees more than 1,500 performances each year, ranging from opera to ballet and theater. It is also home to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

These airports are elevating the terminal dining experience.

Food & Wine announced its 2024 Global Tastemakers awards on Tuesday, with the panel of more than 180 food and travel journalists revealing their favorite airports for food and drinks.

Only three of the top 10 are in the US — and just one is in New York City.

John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens came in seventh, with the tastemakers raving that the “food selection is almost as massive as the airport itself.”

Skytrain shuttles passengers between terminals through the Jewel complex at Changi Airport, Sunday, July 16, 2023, in Singapore.

The inclusion of iconic New York tastes drew acclaim — the panelists recommend trying the Palm Bar & Grille in Terminal 4, which “brings New York steakhouse energy to the airport.”

Since JFK is an international hub, the tastemakers highlighted the diversity of cuisines, such as Soy and Sake for ramen in Terminal 1 and Mi Casa Cantina and Restaurant in Terminal 4.

The other US airports on the list are Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (No. 8) and San Francisco International Airport (No. 9).

A restaurant manager stands outside looking for customers at Narita International Airport on March 26, 2020 in Tokyo, Japan.

The crown, however, went to Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore.

The tourist destination — which boasts the world’s tallest indoor waterfall — features more than 100 food vendors.

The airport’s offerings include “slurp-worthy broth made with Japanese pork bones that have been simmering for more than 10 hours” and “award-winning chili crab.”

Baltimore Key Bridge collapse: Temporary channel opens for boats working on bridge response

The cargo ship struck Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday.

A cargo ship crashed into Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge early Tuesday morning, causing a near-total collapse of the span and halting vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore.

Six construction workers are believed to have fallen from the collapsing bridge into the frigid waters of the Patapsco River below. The bodies of two of the victims have been recovered so far, while four remain missing and are presumed dead, officials said.

Latest headlines:

Channel needs to be cleared more in order to recover 4 remaining victims, biden to visit bridge on friday, temporary channel opens, what to know about the collapse.

The container ship Dali struck Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, partially collapsing the bridge , officials in Maryland said.

A local pilot was at the helm of the ship at the time, Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said.

The crash appeared to be accidental , not intentional, officials said.

Two construction workers were rescued and six went missing in the immediate aftermath of the collapse, officials said. The bodies of two of the victims were recovered from the water on Wednesday amid ongoing search and recovery efforts, while four remain missing and are presumed dead, officials said.

Legal team for ship argues for 'limited liability' in Bridge crash

Lawyers for the Singaporean company that operates the ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore say the company should have "limited liability" in the aftermath of the crash, according to court documents filed in federal court on Monday.

"The casualty was not due to any fault, neglect, or want of care on the part of Petitioners, the Vessel, or persons or entities for whose petitioners may be responsible," court documents filed in Maryland federal court say. "Alternatively, if any such faults caused or contributed to the Casualty, or to any loss or damage arising out of the casualty, which is denied, such faults were occasioned and occurred without petitioners’ privity or knowledge."

The filing seeks to minimize the financial exposure Grace Ocean Private Limited has over the crash.

It also goes into detail about how much damage the vessel sustained.

Court documents say that the vessel sustained $28 million worth of damage and had $1.7 million worth of cargo on the ship.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore on Monday gave an update on his four directives in the wake of the bridge collapse.

In order to achieve his first goal -- recovering the four victims who remain missing -- Moore said there needs to be more work done to clear the channel in order to move forward.

A portion of the bridge under the water was described as "chaotic wreckage," Moore said, and the water is "so murky and so filled with debris that divers cannot see any more than a foot or two in front of them."

Every time a diver goes in the water to search for a victim, "they are taking a risk," Moore said.

The governor said he wants the recovery mission to be completed with no casualties. Six people have been killed in the bridge collapse, Moore said, adding, "I refuse to lose any more."

As for another goal -- reopening channel traffic -- the governor described the scale of the project as "enormous."

"Unified Command has scheduled another lift for later today, pending conditions -- specifically pending lightning. And they will be lifting an estimated 350-ton piece from the bridge," Moore said.

A temporary channel opened Monday to help get more vessels in the water around the site of the collapse, he said.

"The temporary channel will be marked with government lights to aid navigation and will have a controlling depth of 11 feet," Moore said.

Crews are also working on creating a second temporary channel that will measure about 15 feet deep, he said. That's expected to open "in the coming days," he said.

After more debris is cleared, crews will also work to open a third alternate channel with a depth expected around 20 to 25 feet, said Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath, commander of the Fifth Coast Guard District. No timeline for this channel is known.

President Joe Biden will visit the Baltimore bridge site on Friday, April 5, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Biden will be joined by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.

Jean-Pierre did not have any updates on the cost of rebuilding the bridge, repeatedly pointing back to the $60 million in emergency relief funds approved by the Biden administration to begin the recovery efforts.

"We're going to have continued conversation with the state of Maryland to get a sense of how much this is going to cost, and we have said, we are going to certainly continue to talk to Congress to get some assistance here," she said.

-ABC News' Karen Travers

A temporary channel has opened in the vicinity of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, but the channel is limited only to vessels working on the bridge response, the Unified Command said.

The temporary channel is a very small opening, only accessible for small boats, the Unified Command said.

The Unified Command is made up of agencies including the Coast Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Maryland State Police.

What we know about Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed early Tuesday after being hit by a cargo ship, with large parts of the bridge falling into the Patapsco River.

At least eight people fell into the water, members of a construction crew working on the bridge at the time, officials said. Two were rescued, one uninjured and one in serious condition, and two bodies were recovered on Wednesday. The remaining four are presumed dead. The workers are believed to be the only victims in the disaster.

Here’s what we know so far.

Here’s what you need to know about the earthquake.

Taiwan was rocked Wednesday morning by the island’s strongest earthquake in a quarter century, a magnitude 7.4 tremor that killed at least nine people, injured more than 800 others and trapped dozens of people.

The heaviest damage was in Hualien County on the island’s east coast, a sleepy, scenic area prone to earthquakes. Footage from the aftermath showed a 10-story building there partially collapsed and leaning heavily to one side, from which residents emerged through windows and climbed down ladders, assisted by rescuers. Three hikers were killed after being hit by falling rocks on a hiking trail in Taroko National Park, according to the county government.

By late afternoon, officials said rescue efforts were underway to try to rescue 127 people who were trapped, many of them on hiking trails in Hualien.

One building in Changhua County, on the island’s west coast, collapsed entirely. The quake was felt throughout Taiwan and set off at least nine landslides, sending rocks tumbling onto Suhua Highway in Hualien, according to local media reports. Rail services were halted at one point across the island.

The earthquake, with an epicenter off Taiwan’s east coast, struck during the morning commute, shortly before 8 a.m. Taiwanese authorities said by 3 p.m., more than 100 aftershocks, many of them stronger than magnitude 5, had rumbled through the area.

In the capital, Taipei, buildings shook for over a minute from the initial quake. Taiwan is at the intersection of the Philippine Sea tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate, making it vulnerable to seismic activity. Hualien sits on multiple active faults, and 17 people died in a quake there in 2018.

Here is the latest:

The earthquake hit Taiwan as many people there were preparing to travel for Tomb Sweeping Day, a holiday across the Chinese-speaking world when people mourn the dead and make offerings at their graves. Officials warned the public to stay away from visiting tombs in mountain areas as a precaution, especially because rain was forecast in the coming days.

TSMC, the world’s biggest maker of advanced semiconductors, briefly evacuated workers from its factories but said a few hours later that they were returning to work. Chip production is highly precise, and even short shutdowns can cost millions of dollars.

Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s vice president, who is also its president-elect, visited the city of Hualien this afternoon to assess the destruction and the rescue efforts, a government announcement said. Mr. Lai, who will become president in May, said the most urgent tasks were rescuing trapped residents and providing medical care. Next, Mr. Lai said, public services must be restored, including transportation, water and power. He said Taiwan Railway’s eastern line could be reopened by Thursday night.

Taiwan’s fire department has updated its figures, reporting that nine people have died and 934 others have been injured in the quake. Fifty-six people in Hualien County remain trapped.

Officials in Taiwan warned residents to not visit their relatives' tombs, especially in the mountains, this weekend during the holiday, known as Ching Ming, meant to honor them. There had already been 100 aftershocks and the forecast called for rain, which could make travel conditions on damaged roads more treacherous.

Crews are working to reach people trapped on blocked roads. As of 1 p.m. local time, roads were impassable due to damage and fallen rock in 19 places, according to the Ministry of Transportation. At least 77 people remain trapped. A bridge before Daqingshui Tunnel appeared to have completely collapsed.

Taiwan’s worst rail disaster in decades — a train derailment in 2021 that killed 49 people — took place on the first day of the Tomb Sweeping holiday period that year, in the same region as the earthquake.

The earthquake hit Taiwan as many people here were preparing to travel for Tomb Sweeping Day, or Ching Ming, a day across the Chinese-speaking world when people mourn their dead, especially by making offerings at their graves. Now those plans will be disrupted for many Taiwanese.

The holiday weekend would typically see a spike in travel as people visit family across Taiwan. Currently, both rail transport and highways are blocked in parts of Hualien, said Transport Minister Wang Guo-cai. Work is underway to restore rail transportation in Hualien, and two-way traffic is expected to be restored at noon on Thursday, he said.

Taiwan’s preparedness has evolved in response to past quakes.

Taiwan’s earthquake preparedness has evolved over the past few decades in response to some of the island’s largest and most destructive quakes .

In the years after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in 1999, the authorities established an urban search-and-rescue team and opened several emergency medical operation centers, among other measures .

And in 2018, after a quake in the eastern coastal city of Hualien killed 17 people and caused several buildings to partially collapse, the government ordered a wave of building inspections .

Taiwan has also been improving its early warning system for earthquakes since the 1980s. And two years ago, it rolled out new building codes that, among other things, require owners of vulnerable buildings to install ad-hoc structural reinforcements.

So how well prepared was Taiwan when a 7.4 magnitude quake struck near Hualien on Wednesday morning, killing at least seven people and injuring hundreds more?

Across the island, one building collapsed entirely, 15 others were in a state of partial collapse and another 67 were damaged, the island’s fire department said on Wednesday afternoon . Structural engineers could not immediately be reached for comment to assess that damage, or the extent to which building codes and other regulations might have either contributed to it or prevented worse destruction.

As for search-and-rescue preparedness, Taiwan is generally in very good shape, said Steve Glassey, an expert in disaster response who lives in New Zealand.

“ The skill sets, the capabilities, the equipment, the training is second to none,” said Dr. Glassey, who worked with Taipei’s urban search-and-rescue team during the response to a devastating 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. “They’re a very sharp operation.”

But even the best urban search-and-rescue team will be stretched thin if an earthquake causes multiple buildings to collapse, Dr. Glassey said.

Taiwan has options for requesting international help with search-and-rescue efforts. It could directly ask another country, or countries, to send personnel. And if multiple teams were to get involved, it could ask the United Nations to help coordinate them, as it did after the 1999 earthquake.

Pierre Peron, a spokesman for the United Nations, said on Wednesday afternoon that no such request had yet been made as a result of the latest earthquake.

Meaghan Tobin contributed reporting.

At least seven people have died and 736 have been injured as a result of the earthquake, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Another 77 people remained trapped in Hualien County, many of them on hiking trails. Search and rescue operations are underway, said the fire department.

Siyi Zhao

Aftershocks of magnitudes between 6.5 and 7 were likely to occur over the next three or four days, said Wu Chien-fu, director of the Taiwanese Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Center, at a news conference.

As of 2 p.m., 711 people had been injured across Taiwan, the fire department said, and 77 people in Hualien County remained trapped. The four who were known to have died were in Hualien.

Victoria Kim

Hualien County is a quiet and scenic tourist destination.

Hualien County on Taiwan’s east coast is a scenic, sleepy tourist area tucked away from the island’s urban centers, with a famous gorge and aquamarine waters. It also happens to sit on several active faults , making it prone to earthquakes.

The county has a population of about 300,000, according to the 2020 census, about a third of whom live in the coastal city of Hualien, the county seat. It is one of the most sparsely populated parts of Taiwan. About three hours by train from the capital, Taipei, the city describes itself as the first place on the island that’s touched by the sun.

Hualien County is home to Taroko National Park, one of Taiwan’s most popular scenic areas. Visitors come to explore the Taroko Gorge, a striated marble canyon carved by the Liwu River, which cuts through mountains that rise steeply from the coast. The city of Hualien is a popular destination as a gateway to the national park.

According to the state-owned Central News Agency, three hikers were trapped on a trail near the entrance to the gorge on Wednesday, after the quake sent rocks falling. Two of them were found dead, the news agency said. Administrators said many roads within the park had been cut off by the earthquake, potentially trapping hikers, according to the report.

Earthquakes have rattled Hualien with some regularity. In 2018, 17 people were killed and hundreds of others injured when a magnitude 6.5 quake struck just before midnight, its epicenter a short distance northeast of the city of Hualien.

Many of the victims in that quake were in a 12-story building that was severely tilted, the first four floors of which were largely crushed, according to news reports from the time. The next year, the area was shaken by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that injured 17 people.

The area has some of the highest concentrations of Taiwan’s aboriginal population, with several of the island’s Indigenous tribes calling the county home .

The county government in Hualien released a list of people that had been hospitalized with injuries, which stood at 118 people as of midday Wednesday.

Across Taiwan, one building fell down entirely, in Changhua County on the west coast, and 15 buildings partially collapsed, Taiwan’s fire department said. Another 67 buildings were damaged. One of the partially collapsed structures was a warehouse in New Taipei City where four people were rescued, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency. Another 12 were rescued at a separate New Taipei City building where the foundation sank into the ground.

Peggy Jiang, who manages The Good Kid, a children’s bookstore down the street from the partially collapsed Uranus Building in Hualien, said it was a good thing they had yet to open when the quake struck. The area is now blocked off by police and rescue vehicles. “Most people in Hualien are used to earthquakes,” she said. “But this one was particularly scary, many people ran in the street immediately afterward.”

Lin Jung, 36, who manages a shop selling sneakers in Hualien, said he had been at home getting ready to take his 16-month-old baby to a medical appointment when the earthquake struck. He said it felt at first like a series of small shocks, then “suddenly it turned to an intense earthquake shaking up and down.” The glass cover of a ceiling lamp fell and shattered. “All I could do was protect my baby.”

The earthquake damaged buildings and a highway in Hualien.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Taiwan on Wednesday damaged many buildings and a major highway in Hualien, a city on the eastern coast, and it knocked out power as it rocked the island.

Across Taiwan, the quake and its aftershocks caused one building to completely collapse and 15 others to partially collapse, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Sixty-seven other buildings sustained damage.

Two tall buildings in Hualien that sustained particularly extensive damage were at the center of the rescue efforts there. Most damage across the city was not life-threatening, said Huang Hsuan-wan, a reporter for a local news site.

Where buildings were reported damaged in Hualien City

“A lot of roads were blocked off. There are a lot of walls toppled over onto cars,” Derik du Plessis, 44, a South African resident of Hualien, said shortly after the earthquake. He described people rushing around the city to check on their houses and pick up their children. One of his friends lost her house, he said.

One of the damaged buildings in Hualien, a 10-story structure called the Uranus Building that housed a mix of homes and shops, was tilted over and appeared to be on the verge of collapse. Many of its residents managed to flee, but some were missing, said Sunny Wang, a journalist based in the city. Rescuers were trying to reach the basement, concerned that people might be trapped there.

Photographs of the initial damage in Hualien showed another building, a five-story structure, leaning to one side, with crushed motorcycles visible at the ground-floor level. Bricks had fallen off another high-rise, leaving cracks and holes in the walls.

The quake also set off at least nine landslides on Suhua Highway in Hualien, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, which said part of the road had collapsed.

Taiwan’s fire department said four people had been killed in the earthquake.

John Yoon

Across Taiwan, 40 flights have been canceled or delayed because of the earthquake, according to Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation Center.

President Tsai Ing-wen visited Taiwan’s national emergency response center this morning, where she was briefed about the response efforts underway by members of the ministries of defense, transportation, economic affairs and agriculture, as well as the fire department.

A look at Taiwan’s strongest earthquakes.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit Taiwan on Wednesday morning was the strongest in 25 years, the island’s Central Weather Administration said.

At least four people died after the quake struck off Taiwan’s east coast, officials said.

Here’s a look back at some of the major earthquakes in modern Taiwanese history:

Taichung, 1935

Taiwan’s deadliest quake registered a magnitude of 7.1 and struck near the island’s west coast in April 1935, killing more than 3,200 people, according to the Central Weather Administration. More than 12,000 others were injured and more than 50,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Tainan, 1941

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake in December 1941, which struck southwestern Taiwan, caused several hundred deaths, the United States Geological Survey said.

Chi-Chi, 1999

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in September 1999. The quake, which struck about 90 miles south-southwest of Taipei, was the second-deadliest in the island’s history, according to the U.S.G.S. and the Central Weather Administration. More than 10,000 people were injured and more than 100,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Yujing, 2016

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake in February 2016 caused a 17-story apartment complex in southwestern Taiwan to collapse, killing at least 114 people . The U.S.G.S. later said that 90 earthquakes of that scale or greater had occurred within 250 kilometers, or 155 miles, of that quake’s location over the previous 100 years.
