The Enchanting Charm of London at Night

night tour in london

If you’re wondering what makes a night tour in London so special, read on.

London… by day, it’s a bustling metropolis teeming with life, history, and endless things to do.

But when the sun goes down, the city transforms, revealing a completely different, pretty magical side.

🌙 The Transformation from Day to Night

First off, as dusk falls, the London cityscape undergoes a breathtaking transformation.

The stout, formal structures of the day are bathed in a soft glow, their sharp edges softened.

The sparkling lights from buildings, bridges, and lampposts reflect off the River Thames, creating a mesmerising mirage against the city’s dynamic backdrop…i.e. a great backdrop for some London evening exploration.

🌙 Architectural Marvels in a New Light

Famous landmarks like the Tower of London , Buckingham Palace , and the Houses of Parliament take on a different character when illuminated at night.

The gothic architecture of structures like Westminster Abbey becomes even more hauntingly beautiful.

The London Eye , with its glowing ferris wheel, also offers a brilliant view of the city.

🌙 The Nightlife and Cultural Vibes

While many cities go to sleep when it’s dark, countless parts of London come alive.

The West End, for instance, lights up with theater marquees, enticing visitors into a world of drama, comedy, and musicals.

Pubs and bars, each with their own unique character, beckon locals and tourists alike, offering cosy corners to discuss the day’s adventures or just to watch the world go by.

🌙 What to Look For?

The Skyline: Whether from a high vantage point or from the banks of the Thames, the London skyline is a sight to behold.

The ancient structures woven in beside modern skyscrapers, all illuminated, make an extraordinary impression.

Historical Shadows: Keep an eye out for the statues and monuments around the city.

At night, they cast long, dramatic shadows, adding a lovely layer of depth and intrigue.

Local Hotspots : Every London borough has its nighttime favorites.

From food stalls in Camden Market to the jazz bars in Soho , there’s always a local secret waiting to be discovered.

In essence, London at night is an experience, a blend of its rich history with the pulsating energy of a modern city.

Prepping for Your Magical London at Night Tour

night tour in london

Diving into the alluring world of London post-sunset is an adventure in itself.

But, as with any adventure, a little prepping can go a long way to make it even better.

Here’s your guide on how to prepare for your unforgettable night tour in London.

➡️ Dress for the Weather

London’s weather, much like its history, can be a bit unpredictable.

Layers, Layers, Layers: Even in summer, evening temperatures can dip, so it’s a good idea to have a light jacket or sweater at hand.

Stay Dry: Umbrellas or raincoats can be handy since London is famous for its sudden showers.

Many night tours in London will continue rain or shine, so be ready to embrace London’s moody weather.

➡️ Comfortable Footwear is Key

While buses or boats might whisk you to various landmarks, there will likely be quite a bit of walking involved either on the tour itself or navigating the tube to get there.

Opt for Comfort : Think comfort over style. Sturdy sneakers or walking shoes are your best bet (Trust me, your feet will thank you after the tour).

➡️ Stay Charged

To capture your London night’s memories, ensure your phone and camera are fully charged, and consider carrying a power bank for longer tours.

P.S. – Space: Clear out storage on your device to make space for new photos and videos.

➡️ Safety First

London is generally safe, but as in any major city, it’s always wise to stay alert. Make sure to secure your belongings during your tour and wear them in front of you, especially in crowded spots.

➡️ Engage with Your Night Tour

To make the most out of your night tour in London be sure to engage with your guide before the tour starts and share any particular interests or questions you might have.

London guides often customise bits of their narrative based on the group’s curiosity!

➡️ Book in Advance

Some of the most popular night tours, especially the ‘Likely To Sell Out’ ones, require advance booking.

Thames cruise with dinner

The Thames River weaves its way through the city of London past iconic landmarks and historic sites. What better way to enjoy the lights of London at night than on a Thames river cruise . Spot St Paul’s Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament along with many other favourite London sights as you relax over a 5 course meal. Landmarks like the London Eye often have special light installations that look amazing from the river. Some tours take you as far as Greenwich > Click here for Thames dinner cruise info

When you think of London, proper British pubs immediately spring to mind right? Sadly pub culture is on the decline in favour of European style bars but there are still plenty to visit on your London trip.

Pubs to visit in London

Cosy, warm pubs with patrons sipping their ale is one of those iconic experiences you must have when you visit London. There are around 7,000 pubs in London and many of them have a long and fascinating past. These are the best establishments to visit in my opinion.

One of the oldest pubs in the city  is Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese . Here you can drink in the same venue as Charles Dickens and Samuel Johnson once did. How British right? Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese – you can’t make this up – isn’t it a fabulous name?

Another favourite near Borough Market and London Bridge is the George Inn – the last galleried inn in London. Dickens was here too and the pub was even mentioned in his book Little Dorritt . This site has a great list of pubs by area in London so you can find one near where you are staying.

Guided pub tour

Take a guided pub tour earlier in the day and find out the history behind the famous watering holes. Soho is a great area to do this thanks to the rich music history of the area. You can drink in the same watering holes as the Beatles and David Bowie and hear stories about how they rose to fame. As most pub tours start in the afternoon you can return to your favorites later in the evening and really soak up the atmosphere > Click for more info

If you’re more interested in literary London, you can follow in the footsteps of Dickens and join an historic London pub tour starting at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Pubs start to get busy around 5pm as the working day finishes. They stay open until 11pm. If you are travelling as a family I’d probably avoid this activity after dark unless you find a pub that specifically welcomes children.

London bars

There are countless bars in London, from the divey to the downright swanky.I choose bars that offer a more upscale experience and an ambience where you can talk. Here are a few picks for heading out on the town.

  • Bar Termini – classic Italian style in Soho – make mine an Aperol Spritz
  • Pennethorne’s – elegant Somerset house bar with amazing cocktails
  • The Connaught Bar – a posh stop where martinis are made to order from a trolley wheeled to your table

Some more suggestions here . If you like your bars noisy and crowded, head to Shoreditch or Camden where you find revellers spilling onto the streets.

There’s something about a city at night that gets your spine tingling. I love the sparkling lights and night time reflections. Some favourite night time activities in London include taking in the views of the city. Go to these places at dusk and watch London as the sun sets and its pretty lights light up the sky.

With views over the Houses of Parliament and down the Thames, the 30 minute rotation of the London Eye is simply breathtaking.Time your ride perfectly for dusk and you will enjoy one of the most memorable experiences of your trip to London.

This site tells you when dusk falls in London. The last hour of rides will give you the full night time experiences – more info on opening times . For a truly special occasion or even just because you’re in London you can even sip champagne as you take in the views.

Top tip – Book skip the line tickets for the London Eye so you don’t waste time waiting >> Click here to prebook London Eye tickets

One of London’s best free attractions, the Sky Garden offers sweeping views of the city from its 34th and 37th stories.Known to Londoners as the walkie-talkie building due to its shape, the sky scraper soars over Leadenhall Street and looks to the south over the river.

You can see the London Eye lit up from there and many other famous landmarks along the Thames. If you are hungry or like dinner with a view there are three restaurants on site. I like to enjoy a sip of champagne at the bar.

Dining with a view is one of my favourite activities and you can’t beat the glamorous atmosphere at    The Shard  where you eat with the whole of London twinkling below your feet. Favourite restaurants at the Shard include Aqua Shard and Hutong. Both are quite luxurious with incredible menus. You will need to book well in advance for all the restaurants in this iconic building.

Or, you can just take in the view. The View from the Shard is open late all year round and has some of the best vistas in London. You get some of the best views of the Tower of London from that vantage point and it’s best to book your tickets in advance >> click here for the Shard info and ticket prices

Portrait Restaurant – National Portrait Gallery

For views that are a little more out of Mary Poppins or Peter Pan, we love Portrait , the National Portrait Gallery’s rooftop restaurant. Here you dine and look out across Trafalgar Square and over the rooftops of London to the Houses of Parliament – read my full review . Please note the Gallery is currently closed for renovations until 2023.

With so many London galleries and museums to explore, why not take advantage of late openings and visit them when they are not as crowded – after dark. Many of these venues are open late on Thursdays, Fridays and even Saturdays – here’s a quick list for you to plan your time.I always recommend checking their websites for special opening times during your visit.

Thursday late night openings

  • The National Portrait Gallery closes at 9pm
  • The Barbican Art Gallery is open until 10pm

Friday late night openings

  • The British Museum stays open until 8:30pm
  • The National Gallery – 9pm | National Portrait Gallery until 9pm
  • The Tate Modern – 10pm

  • Victoria & Albert Museum shuts at 10pm

Saturday late night openings

  • Tate Modern is open until 10pm

For several hundred years Soho has been the centre of London nightlife.Though now the area is gentrified and home to fashionable restaurants, bars and clubs, this area was once home to music halls, grungey pubs and the heart of the red light district.

Soho also has a more recent colourful past as the place where rock and roll legends such as David Bowie and the Sex Pistols played and got their lucky breaks. Venues such as The Marquee Club and Ronnie Scott’s have played a huge part in the British music scene. They have hosted bands from the Beatles to Oasis. So pay your respects to your rock heroes as you wander Soho.

Simply take a stroll around the streets of Soho and Covent Garden at night. It’s great for people watching and checking out the light installations. The light show above pays tribute to the area’s fashion legacy.

Make sure to stop by Covent Garden and Leicester Square where you always find some of the world’s most talented street performers. And if you are interested in checking the local pub scene, this Soho pub tour comes highly recommended.

Note – you must book well in advance to secure a table at these popular restaurants. I recommend using the  Open Table app to book many London restaurants online

  • Spring – elegant produce driven menu in stunning Somerset House – a former palace

Walk alongside the River Thames from Borough Market to the London Eye.Along the way you pass the Tate Modern, Globe Theatre Millennium Bridge and National Theatre. It’s an area buzzing with people, restaurants and seasonal activities.

On the other side of the river, landmarks such as the Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral, Somerset House, and the modern buildings of the city are beautifully lit. This is one of the best places to take night photos of London.

If you head east along the South Bank, it’s a shorter walk taking in beautiful views of the Tower of London with The Shard soaring overhead. The South Bank is a favourite place to visit in London at night thanks to the unique atmosphere and iconic landmarks.

For the most part, London is a very safe place to venture out at night, especially if you are sticking to the main tourist areas. Due to recent events, London has considerable police presence on the streets. The city also has a huge number of CCTV cameras acting as a deterrent for criminal behaviour. Having said that, it’s always advisable to take precautions when travelling in one of the biggest cities in the world.

Use these tips for staying safe in London after dark.

  • Plan your journey – make sure you are aware of the best routes to get to and from your destination
  • Stick to major roads and streets in well lit areas
  • Keep valuables such as cameras, purses, phones, jewellery and wallets hidden and well secured
  • Make sure you are accompanied when using an ATM – try to use them in daylight hours
  • Avoid walking alone or using headphones
  • Hail a black cab if you are lost – you can use the MyTaxi or  Gett  apps for licensed black cabs
  • The emergency number in the UK is 999

Thanks to the night tube and night buses, public transport in central London runs 24 x 7 and is safe and convenient. Timetables vary so check the Transport for London website for latest information.Since Uber lost their licence in London, I use black cabs at night if I am not near a tube station. Download the FreeNow or Gett  apps to hail licensed black cabs.

London after dark is as fun as in the day time. My favourite thing to do in London at night is sip a cocktail at Aqua Shard high above the twinkling city lights and Tower of London. For more ideas and things to do if you’re visiting London for a few days, check out our best ever London itinerary .

Remember, darkness falls quickly in London during wintertime  – as early as 4pm! – so it’s a good idea to plan some of these night time activities if you are visiting from November to March.

Seven of the Best: Top London Night Tours

Kenny Dunn

London by day is a renowned and remarkable world class city, and by night it shows off an alternate colour and vibrancy.  The illuminated grandeur of London’s landmarks as night descends shows the capital, if you’ll forgive the pun, in a whole new light.

There is an extraordinary allure about London in the dark.  The city’s attractions fill the night with a certain splendour leaving visitors enraptured.  Just because the day is over, it doesn’t mean your sightseeing is.  There are an array of evening tours by bus, boat, and, as us Brits say, by Shanks’ Pony (on foot) .  Each brings something different and fresh to the epic tale of the city.  Here are our pick of the top London night tours:

1. Wheels on the bus

There is a plentiful supply of night bus tours in London.  Each will immerse you in London’s extraordinary attractions.  You can take London night tours by bus with the likes of London by Night and  See London by Night .  Alternatively, discover a spooky side to the city, aboard a Ghost Bus Tour .  Among the highlights of each tour are Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, St Paul’s Cathedral, Parliament Square, Big Ben, the Tower of London, Harrods, Buckingham Palace, and Tower Bridge.

2. All aboard!

Get ready for a big jazz-hand accented ending aboard the London Showboat Dinner Cruise , where you can enjoy a convivial evening of food, wine, and entertainment as you cruise through along the River Thames.  So much of the highlights of London’s skyline are best seen from the river, including Tower Bridge, the Thames Barrier, the O2 Arena, the London Eye, and the Houses of Parliament.  The  River Lights cruise  has a jazz quintet to relax you while you take in London’s most dazzling landmarks.  Ticket prices include a glass of bubbly, canapés, and live entertainment onboard.

3. Dark side of the moon

Explore London’s dark recesses with a meander into the macabre.  There are walking ghost tours of the many haunted corners of London, the murderous sites of the notorious Jack the Ripper in Whitechapel, and the East End streets ruled by the Kray Twins and other legendary London (but thankfully, long gone) criminals.  Among the hearty selection of ghost tours are the  London Ghost Tour  and London Walks , which also runs Jack the Ripper tours.  These are experiences you’ll never forget as you learn about the ghosts and grisly skeletons in London’s cupboards, as well as dark secrets of London’s history.

The streets of Whitechapel look fairly innocent by day, but take a London night tour to learn all about their grisly history. Photo: Sarah Lee

4. The beef on the tower

Besides visiting the Tower of London during the day – taking in the likes of the Crown Jewels – it is also possible to take an evening tour led by one of its legendary Beefeaters, or Yeoman Warders.  The tour takes in some of the more gruesome sights and spooky stories such as the Bloody Tour, Traitors’ Gate, and the Scaffold Site, as well as revealing all the royal gossip and the secrets kept within its ancient walls.  Get there early and you can also combine your trip with the Ceremony of the Keys: the traditional locking up of the Tower of London.  It has taken place on every night, without fail, for at least 700 years, securing the fortress, and the Crown Jewels within it.  The Ceremony of the Keys is free to attend, but is so popular you need to book at least a month in advance to be sure of attending.

5. Shhh…

One of the more unusual London night tours is the Silent Night Tour of artist  Dennis Severs’ House , a residence and living museum in Spitalfields, close to the starting location of the Eating London Food Tours .  The house is both a museum and experience, where you’re able to immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of an 18th-century London family.  For the 45 minutes it takes to tour the house you are requested to maintain a strict silence.

6. Light me up

It’s one thing seeing a museum’s treasures with bright daylight streaming in, but quite another by candlelight.  Well, that’s the principle the Sir John Soane’s museum works to, anyway.  On the first Tuesday of each month you can tour the house of this former architect with only candles providing atmospheric accents.  The museum is open between 6pm-9pm and admits the first 200 people on a first come-first served basis.  It’s a very popular tour of the museum, and more people turn up than can enter the small house.  Get there early!

7. Crawl your way ’round town

Vic Norman may just have the best job in the world.  He is the organiser of a series of London Pub Tours .  Likely the worst part of his job?  Choosing which pubs to include in the seven tour routes he runs across the city.  The tours promise a journey through 1,500 years’ history and visit to up to six of the best pubs in London, all between 7pm and 10pm.  Upcoming tour dates are on the website.

Whichever way you chose to tour London by night, be sure to wrap up warm if it’s winter, and if you want to see the city lights in all their glory, start later in summer. The long summer evenings push sunset to around 10pm in June.  Tell us your favourite London night tour, or your best evening spent in the city.

Take That at London’s O2 Arena: timings, tickets and everything you need to know

‘This Life On Tour‘ is coming to London for six whole nights – and there are still tickets up for grabs

Amy Houghton

If your idea of a very nice day (or night) out is watching a veteran boyband dust off their choreography, belt out their biggest hits and sport matching all-pink suits, you’re in luck – Take That have officially returned to arenas around the UK .

Following the release of their ninth studio album This Life, Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald (sorry, no Jason or Robbie this time) have kicked off their UK and Ireland tour. Having already stopped by Sheffield, Leeds and Dublin, they’ll be  playing a very generous six nights at the O2 here in London.

Heading to one of Take That’s London shows? From the start times to a potential setlist,  here’s everything you need to know about ‘This Life On Tour’ at the O2.

When are Take That playing London’s O2?

Take That will be putting on shows at the O2 on  Thursday April 25 , Friday April 26, Saturday April 27 , Sunday April 28 , Tuesday April 30  and Wednesday May 1 .

What time do doors open?

Doors will open at 6.30pm each night apart from on April 28, when they’ll open at 6pm.

What time will Take That come on stage?

If it goes anything like the dates played so far, Take That fans can expect the band to take to the stage some time between 8.30pm and 9pm . Expect a slightly earlier start time on April 28, as the curfew and doors are both earlier.

Who is supporting the band?

None other than Olly Murs. He’ll likely appear on stage around 7.25pm.

Has the setlist been confirmed?

A setlist for the London shows hasn’t been officially confirmed but we can get an idea of what it will look like based on a recent show in Leeds. According to Setlist.fm, it went something like this:

  • Keep Your Head Up
  • Days I Hate Myself
  • Everything Changes
  • A Million Love Songs
  • I Found Heaven
  • Forever Love
  • Speak Without Words
  • Get Ready for It
  • March of the Hopeful
  • The Champion
  • Greatest Day
  • Time and Time Again
  • Relight My Fire
  • One More Word
  • Hold Up a Light
  • Back for Good
  • Never Forget
  • Rule the World

Can you still get tickets to see Take That in London?

The Spice Girls: Melanie B, Melanie C, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams And Emma Bunton

Spice Girls reunite at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party

David Beckham shares video of former girl group singing their hit Stop at private club Oswald’s in London, as Mel B hints at a tour

The Spice Girls have reunited for a rare performance featuring all five members – at Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday party, where they danced to their classic hit Stop.

The party was held on Saturday at Oswald’s, a private members’ club in London, with the likes of Tom Cruise, Salma Hayek, Eva Longoria and Gordon Ramsay also attending.

During the party, Beckham – along with fellow Spice Girls Geri Halliwell-Horner, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chisholm and Emma Bunton – sang along to Stop as well as performing the signature choreography from the single off their 1997 sophomore album Spiceworld.

Beckham’s husband, David Beckham , posted a video to Instagram where he gleefully looked on. “I mean come on,” the 48-year-old former footballer captioned the video.

Victoria responded in the comments, writing: “Best night ever! Happy Birthday to me! I love you all so much!”

Brown also hinted at a potential reunion tour. “About last night #tourdatescomingsoon,” she shared, reposting the video to her Instagram story.

Last month, Brown teased in an interview with Today that the Spice Girls were working on something “very good” together – though she did not confirm rumours of a tour at the time.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Spice Girls, who formed in 1994 and officially split six years later in 2000.

They have reunited multiple times over the years – most recently as part of their 2019 Spice World tour, which Beckham did not attend. The last time all five members performed publicly was in 2012 for the closing ceremony of the London Olympics.

In 2023 the Beckhams’ marriage was explored in a four-part Netflix documentary series, which also addressed his rise to fame as a footballer and the extensive press speculation that he allegedly had an affair while playing for Real Madrid in 2003.
