River Nile Cruises

Discover the ancient mysteries of Luxor, Egypt and the River Nile with Barrhead Travel

Generally considered to be the longest river in the world, the River Nile is formed from the confluence of the White Nile and the Blue Nile at Khartoum, and flows north through the vast expanse of the Sahara desert to its mouth in the Mediterranean Sea.

The River Nile plays a historically significant role in many ancient civilisations, and is a fascinating tourist destination for adventurous and inquisitive travellers. Almost all of the cultural treasures and ancient settlements of Egypt can be found along the banks of the Nile, and river cruises offer a relaxing way to discover the many sights and sounds of this mysterious land.

Many Nile cruises will take you on tours of the historic sites of Abu Simbel and Kom Ombo, the Aswan High Dam, the Temple of Karnak and the Valley of the Kings, as well as offering you time to explore the bustling souks and markets of Luxor. Tours to the Egyptian capital of Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza are often also available, as are extended hotel stays in Egypt's beautiful resorts.

Virtual Nile Cruise

Welcome to the #virtualnilecruise! These pages are intended as a quick-reference atlas of archaeological sites in Egypt providing photos and short descriptions, key facts, notes on, and links to, further reading etc. This is an expanded version of a series of posts to social media from 2020 when the world was in lockdown and travel to Egypt from the UK was impossible (for more on the background see here ).

nile cruise khartoum

To ‘visit’ any of these sites please follow the links below, or see them on a map in Google Earth here. All photographs are my own unless otherwise stated. To reproduce any of them please contact me.

A note on names : ancient sites in Egypt are often known by more than one name – typically by a modern Arabic name, an ancient Greek one, and sometimes one used only or mainly in Egyptology. In the lists below I have used what seem to me to be the most commonly used names, but I have added alternatives where that has seemed helpful.

A note on further reading : I have not attempted to provide any bibliography for the sites except for those about which there is a really excellent resource online. The ‘bible’ of Egyptian archaeology remains The Topographical Bibliography of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic Texts, Reliefs and Paintings more commonly known as the ‘TopBib’ or ‘Porter and Moss’ after its original editors. The topographical volumes (I-VII) are no longer up-to-dates for sites at which any work has been undertaken in recent years, but they provide excellent maps and plans of all the major monuments which are still very reliable. All seven volumes are now freely available as PDFs via the website of the Griffith Institute ( here ). Another quick and easy reference guide I would recommend is Bard, K (Ed.), Encyclopedia of the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt which is available as a very handy e-book (e.g. here ).

SITE ENTRIES

The sites below are arranged according to the order I adopted for my daily ‘virtual Nile cruise’ posts during the lockdowns. As a Nile cruise would typically start in Cairo, that’s where the list begins. We then go south as far as Aswan where such cruises typically end. I then added sites further up the Nile into Sudan as far as Khartoum, and then, a few months later, extended the virtual exploration to an itinerary taking in the Nile Delta, and the loop of oases in the Western Desert. An alternative list which fits with the arrangement of sites in Porter and Moss a little better is here.

Nile cruising on the ship that inspired Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile

Author: Ulrike Lemmin-Woolfrey

Published on: 17 February 2022

Updated on: 11 May 2022

Nile cruise holidays have long been a popular option for those keen to explore multiple Egypt hotspots. With the new Death on the Nile film now out, what's a Nile river cruise like?

For years I had been wanting to cruise down the Nile. Not with hundreds of other passengers on a glass-encased, modern ship, but in style and with as few fellow passengers as possible.

It was reading an interview with celebrity interior designer Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen, who cruised down the Nile with his wife for their 30th wedding anniversary, that showed me the way. I finally had the name of a ship that might just tick all the right boxes: the SS Sudan.

Researching the SS Sudan further revived memories of the book Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie, the subsequent 1978 film version with Peter Ustinov as detective Hercule Poirot, and the 2004 TV version with David Suchet, all of which I loved.

A new film version of Death on the Nile has hit the cinema screens this month starring Kenneth Branagh as Poirot, catering to a hungry audience who love a bit of sleuthing with a setting that is exotic as well as stylish.

The books and three films have one thing in common: the Steamship Sudan. This is the ship on which Agatha Christie sailed in 1933 and started on her book, while the three movies were filmed onboard the SS Sudan, called SS Karnak in the book, and even if the films took a few directorial liberties, it is easily recognisable.

Saga announces new river cruise ship for 2025

American cruise lines to sail out of washington dc, riverside luxury cruises to launch third ship in march, tui river cruises announces first new-build ship, riviera travel ‘determined to deliver’ on new sustainability plan, edwina lonsdale on why river cruises rock, uniworld announces new ‘bucket-list’ itineraries, how to choose your excursions on an avalon waterways' river cruise, a-rosa becomes first river cruise line to offer swimming lessons, amawaterways to operate two ships on magdalena river.

Today, the ship still encompasses the glamour of travel in the 1930s, with wood-panelled cabins opening onto a wide teak veranda, fluttering white canvas shades, gleaming brass instruments, comfortable wicker chairs, and a ratio of 63 crew to roughly 45 passengers.

The SS Sudan is one of two steamships that Thomas Cook used to ferry rich travellers between Luxor and Aswan in the early 1900s, when archaeologists making spectacular discoveries of ancient Egyptian treasures along the Nile, drew wealthy tourists to Egypt on the so-called Grand Tour, which was en vogue then.

With the Old Winter Palace Hotel in Luxor and the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan and the SS Sudan in between, luxury could be assured at every step, forgoing most of the climatic and logistic hardships that tourists potentially faced in Egypt in those days.

After a few gentle restorations and modernisations over the years, the SS Sudan remains the only true and original paddle steamer on the Nile and keeps up the old-world glamour of travel along its trips up and down the Nile.

Embarking on the SS Sudan, now owned by a French travel company, I caught a first glimpse of my fellow passengers. I was joined by passengers from France, Switzerland, the UK and Spain.

There were few enough guests to allow the feeling of exclusivity, but enough to make the journey interesting. A six-day, five-night trip lay ahead, with scheduled excursions, meals on board, even a screening of the Death on the Nile movie on the itinerary, in the very bar used as a murder scene in the film.

The five suites and 18 cabins on the ship are all on one level, above the restaurant and bar, and below the sundeck, with the superior suites at the bow and stern. The cabins are comfortable, with either double or twin beds, armchairs, a minibar, wardrobes, and ensuite bathrooms.

- READ MORE: Top 10 UNESCO World Heritage sights to visit by cruise -

Outside of each cabin there are a table and wicker chairs, but the best views are had from the sundeck, where wide armchairs and sun loungers invite you to relax and just watch the life on the banks of the Nile go by.

Each day offers an excursion, ranging from Qena, a little downriver from Luxor and home to the temples of Abydos and Dendera, to a return to Luxor for the night and a visit to the Valley of the Kings, Queens, Nobles, and Artisans the next morning.

Further stops upriver are Edfu and the temple of Kom Ombo, and Aswan, with a visit to the fantastic island temple of Philae. And while each day offers an excursion, so does each day bring a few hours of daylight sailing, allowing passengers to not only enjoy time on the ship and the views along the river but also see the spectacular sunsets on the west bank of the Nile.

The excursions to the ancient Egyptian temples are simply awesome, in the literal sense: Stunning, historic, larger-than-life reminders of a mighty civilisation. And, with a guide catering to each of the small groups brought together by their preferred language staying on board throughout the journey and leading all the visits with your group, you learn an incredible amount.

But, despite the wonders of ancient Egypt’s being the reason for all of us being onboard, at times I felt quite ‘templed out’, to coin a phrase. Those peaceful hours of sailing offered a much-needed respite from an onslaught of mind-boggling information and breath-taking sights every day.

- READ MORE: Best river cruises for families in 2022 -

It was the SS Sudan itself with its working steam chimney and the ever-turning paddle wheel, the attention of the staff, the wonderful meals on board, and the afternoon tea with freshly baked sweet delights that made sitting on the decks during sailing such a treat.

The books I had brought along, which I had envisaged myself reading sitting on the wicker chair outside my cabin, remained unopened, instead, I drank in the sights along the Nile and the life going on alongside it.

I lost count how many children I waved to, how many donkeys and water buffalos I saw, how many egrets floated past standing on tiny swimming grass islands, and how many times I simply did not bother taking the camera down, but just kept on clicking.

We passed other cruise ships, with people splashing in the onboard pool, or even dancing in the onboard club. The SS Sudan did not have any of these amenities, and yet, dare I say it? I felt sorry for those passengers on the glass-encased, character-less ships.

Being on the SS Sudan was a little like being in a time-warp, having been transported back to the grand old days of travel, with comfort, style and an unobtrusive luxury that made me prefer sitting on the sundeck with a gin and tonic in hand, watching the green banks dotted with fishermen and playing children, houses with women hanging the washing on the line, small farms and some larger communities go by, and feeling utterly at ease.

The Wi-Fi onboard was too patchy to be of any use, keeping me in a cocoon away from the world outside. Which, after a twitchy few hours initially, eventually added to the appeal.

- READ MORE: How to pick a river cruise cabin -

One night, we all were invited into the bar and watched David Suchet’s Poirot solve the devilish murders that Agatha Christie had conceived on this very ship, probably on this very stretch of the Nile.

The ship’s manager proudly told us he had been given a cameo role in the new 2022 Kenneth Branagh version when they filmed on board, and I simply cannot wait to see the film and relive my cruise on the Nile.

They say time travel is not possible, but sailing on the last steamship on the Nile, surrounded by history that is quite overwhelming at times, watching a day-to-day life barely changed for hundreds of years taking place alongside an ancient river, I dare say it is absolutely possible. Even if just for six days.

At 6650 km (4130 miles), the Nile is the longest river in the world and passes through 11 countries – Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan and Egypt. There are two major tributaries, the White Nile and the Blue Nile. The former rises around Lake Victoria in central Africa but its actual source is still disputed as the lake has feeder rivers. The Blue Nile’s source is Lake Tana in Ethiopia and the two rivers meet near Khartoum in Sudan.

The Nile is an important water source for much of its length. In many places it floods – becoming a natural source of irrigation – though, since the building of the Aswan Dam in 1970, this is no longer the case in Egypt. It passes through many lakes – Kyoga and Albert in Uganda, Lake Nasser in Sudan and Egypt – and flows over a number of cataracts. In Egypt it splits into the branches that form the Nile Delta that feed the Mediterranean. The river is, of course, most famous for its role in the cities and sites of great antiquity within Egypt. Its flooding made a great contribution to the development of agriculture and civilisation in the region as the river overflowed its banks and brought rich silt making the land fertile. Most cruises travel the river between Luxor and Aswan in an area filled with such extraordinary sites as the temples of the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, the desert city of Akhenaten, the tombs of Beni Hassan and Tutankhamun. There can be few places where 5000 years of history unrolls before your eyes within a landscape that still looks as it would in biblical times.

Top 10 Things To Do in Khartoum, Sudan

Camels are a big part of Sudanese culture

Sudan is often a place overlooked by travellers, but this East African country has some impressive credentials and is definitely worth going off the beaten track for. Incredibly it has 220 extant pyramids, making it the country with the most in the world. But for those looking to experience something different, head to the metropolitan city of Khartoum.

Be at the confluence of the nile.

A boat trip to the confluence of the majestic Blue and White Niles is an absolute must when visiting Khartoum. The Blue Nile begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia and flows into Sudan, while the White Nile is longer and runs through central Africa. Separated by its distinct colours, you will get an epic view of the river as well as the city while out there. Haggle for a boat (they can be hired on Nile Street next to Tuti Bridge), grab some soft drinks and snacks from nearby vendors, jump in and jet off!

To make the most out of your experience, take two empty water bottles with you before setting off, and when you reach the confluence, carefully fill the bottles with water from each river. You’ll understand why they’re called the Blue and White Niles.

The Nile at Khartoum is the confluence of the White and Blue Nile rivers

Have shisha on the beach

Tuti Island is a large agricultural island in the centre of the Nile, and its busy cafés provide visitors with lots of ways to have fun. Take a taxi or use public transport to get to the southeastern tip of the island for beautiful views of the Blue Nile and downtown Khartoum. Once there, enjoy the short stroll down to the water’s edge where you’ll be welcomed by numerous tea ladies who provide food, drinks and shisha. Choose between the many colourful chairs, have a seat and relax while enjoying the tranquil surroundings. If it gets too relaxed for you, horse rides are available for those who can summon the stamina.

Having shisha on the beach while visiting Tuti Island is a great way to unwind and take in the laid-back atmosphere

Pay your respects to the revolution’s martyrs

Between 2018 and 2019, Sudan staged a country-wide revolution and eventually ousted its longtime president, Omar al-Bashir. However, the peaceful protests led by women and youth were met with extreme violence, and many of the participants were wounded, abused and killed. The collective outpouring of grief at the mistreatment of innocent civilians resulted in numerous artworks that were created around the city, particularly around the military headquarters in Khartoum. Learn about the nation and its hardships and victories through art and admire the many murals and paintings, including portraits of those who fought for change and lost their lives. Sudanese artists suffered greatly under the Bashir regime, so this is a way to appreciate the talent and resilience of the artists.

Immerse yourself in history at the Sudan National Museum

Khartoum has a fantastic roster of museums to choose from like the Republican Palace Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. But the main must-visit institution is the Sudan National Museum. Its courtyard alone is home to four ancient Egyptian-era temples, built by some of Egypt’s most famous pharaohs, including New Kingdom rulers Hatshepsut and Ramses II. Stop by and marvel at their crisp hieroglyphic inscriptions. Learn about ancient Sudan and come face-to-face with monumental remains from the country’s Kushite era that took place in Nubia, between Sudan and Egypt. Also on display are large-scale colourful murals from some of Sudan’s medieval churches and cathedrals. If you’re particularly into archaeology, consider spending a few hours here and take breaks by visiting the cafés across the road.

Buhen was once a settlement in ancient Egypt, and today the temple can be found inside the National Museum Of Sudan in Khartoum

Go to church

Even if you are not a frequent churchgoer at home, you might consider visiting one in Sudan. The majority of Sudanese are Muslims, but there is also an enduring Christian community here, despite having faced years of persecution. To see a different side of the country that many people miss, pay a visit to one of Khartoum’s church services. St Matthew’s Cathedral – an architecturally impressive Roman Catholic church in downtown Khartoum – is a good place to start. With services that run on Sundays, a visit will not only give you a rare glimpse into Sudanese Christianity but also offer a moment of tranquillity away from the bustling streets of Khartoum.

St Matthew’s Cathedral is situated close to the Blue Nile in Khartoum

Feel the pulse at the University of Khartoum

The University of Khartoum makes it to this list for good reason. Most importantly this is because many students took part – and were killed – in the 2018-19 revolution. Memorials, posters and graffiti scattered around the campus sadly testify to this and demonstrate how students have often generated the pulse of revolutionary activity. Constructed in the early 20th century, the building itself is a working relic of Britain’s colonization of Sudan and is reminiscent of college buildings in Oxford and Cambridge.

Many of the people who took part in the 2018-2019 revolution in Sudan were students from Khartoum University

See some skills at Nuba wrestling

Khartoum is a cosmopolitan city and home to many people from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The Nuba from South Kordofan state is one of these groups, and each Saturday and Wednesday they convene wrestling matches in Haj Yusuf in Khartoum North. Watch the fighters as they are split into two groups, where the winner of each round chooses who to face in the next. The competitors are extremely skilled and quite famous, with many dedicated fans sitting in the audience. As you watch the sport, you’ll also be able to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, banter and sometimes musical performances in the small and intimate arena.

Make sure you arrive at 3.30pm – it’s 40 minutes away from central Khartoum – and stay until sunset to soak up all the buzz.

Nuba wrestling is a popular sport in Sudan, and you can attend a match every week

Get in touch with spiritual Sufi traditions

There is a strong Islamic Sufi tradition in Sudan, and many people belong to one of the Sufi ‘orders’. Sufis tend to emphasise the oneness of the universe and existence, and they gather to perform collective devotions (zikr) in which short phrases or prayers are repeatedly recited. If you’re thinking of whirling dervishes then you’re on the right lines, but to truly understand Sudanese Sufism you should go to Hamad al-Nil cemetery in Omdurman. Each Friday at 4pm, devotees meet for worship, where they sing and chant poems, and dance and move together in the colourful space for several hours. Everyone is friendly and open-minded, so feel free to wander around and ask questions while experiencing authentic traditions.

Hamad al-Nil Tomb, Omdurman, in northern Sudan

Admire the herds at the camel market

Camels are a big part of Sudanese culture and it’s worth travelling a bit farther northwest to see them in Umbada. As in much of North Africa, camels are used for trade, transport, racing and also meat. The camels in Umbada have been bred in White Nile state and Kordofan, and have been brought to the market to be sold to local merchants and buyers from the Gulf. Visit the market early in the morning to cruise around and see the biggest display of camels. The knowledgeable traders will happily chat with you and tell you all about their herds. Tea and coffee are on offer as always, or, if you’re feeling brave, you can try some fresh camel milk.

Visiting a camel market in Sudan is a unique experience, as camels are a big part of Sudanese culture

Eat at someone’s house

Everyone who’s been to Sudan will tell you that the Sudanese are some of the most hospitable people you’ll ever meet. One of the primary ways they demonstrate their appreciation for visitors is with food, so if you get asked to go to someone’s house (which you will), say, “Yes!” Expect to be served beans, lentils, bread, falafel, okra (with some spicy chilli on the side), followed by fruit, sticky pastries and sugary tea. Home visits are particularly important if you’re not venturing outside Khartoum, as they may be the best opportunity to get to know local people.

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Agatha Christie Nile Cruise Tour – All Aboard the Steam Ship Sudan Used in Death on the Nile!

By: Author Sophie Pearce

Did you know that you can follow in Agatha Christie’s footsteps by stepping aboard the Steam Ship Sudan in Egypt?

The oldest steamboat still running on the Nile today. You really can take your very own Agatha Christie Nile Cruise!

The queen of crime herself stepped aboard the Steam Ship Sudan to sail down the Nile. She travelled throughout Egypt in 1937. This cruise, and the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan , inspired her to write her famous novel ‘Death on the Nile’ .

Decades later, it has been the star attraction and filming location for scenes in modern film and TV adaptations. Most famously,  Death on the Nile  in 2004 starring David Suchet

During my Nile cruise aboard the MS Mayfair from Aswan to Luxor , I spotted the SS Sudan pulling into Kom Ombo port. I instantly recognised it and was dying to take a look around. My tour guide, Eid, used to work on board the ship and knew it well.

He also knew the manager of the Steam Ship Sudan and managed to score me a free tour! A.K.A I got to snoop around the ship for a few hours. I was over the moon with excitement!

It felt surreal to wander around the filming location of a movie I have been watching for years. Here’s a tour of Agatha Christie’s Nile Cruise, the boat used in Death on the Nile.

agatha christie nile cruise steam ship sudan death on the nile

Agatha Christie Nile Cruise: The history of Steam Ship Sudan

The Steam Ship Sudan, or SS Sudan, is an old steamer Nile cruise ship that was built for King Fouad in 1885.

A few years before this, the legendary entrepreneur Thomas Cook acquires a permit for tourist Nile sailing. He then accepts eager tourists aboard his first Nile Cruise for Egyptian tourism in 1876. As well as Nile cruises, Cook also built the Old Winter Palace in Luxor and the Old Cataract in Aswan.

In 1911, he acquires the Steam Ship Sudan and Arabia  to advertise faster cruise ships. These boats cut down the tour from Cairo to just 20 days and so more tourists were eager to step aboard.

By 1935, the Steam Ship had reached a golden age of tourism and in 1937, Agatha Christie steps onboard.

No one ever knows whether Agatha Christie intended to stay so long in Egypt. But, what we do know is that she remained here for most of that year. The SS Sudan and the Old Cataract were her muses for writing Death on the Nile.

In World War II, Egyptian tourism came to a halt. This also meant that the Steam Ship Sudan was abandoned and locked away for over 50 years.

In 2000, directors of  Voyageurs du Monde   bought the steamer and revived the SS Sudan to its former glory. It set sail once more in 2006 and has welcomed tourists on board ever since.

What films and shows have been filmed onboard the Steam Ship Sudan?

The famous ‘Karnak’ steamer which Agatha Christie wrote about in her novel, was based on the Steam Ship Sudan after her own cruise.

I always thought that the 1978 version of Death on the Nile was filmed onboard the Steam Ship Sudan. But, I later found out that four weeks of filming took place aboard the SS Memnon. This ship is still running as part of Seti Cruises, but only for private functions.

The SS Sudan at the time was still locked away. But, I’m sure if it was available they would have used it for the movie.

The 2004 version of Death on the Nile , starring David Suchet, was filmed on board this very ship.

There is also a new adaptation with Sir Kenneth Branagh due to be released soon and I wonder if the SS Sudan will be a filming location too!

Welcome aboard the Steam Ship Sudan

As soon as I waited on the dock at Luxor and saw the SS Sudan pull in, I felt butterflies. Seeing this ship in person and knowing I was going to come aboard was a strange feeling.

The fact that Agatha Christie would have been on this boat made me have a serious fan girl moment!

I walked down the steps and the gangplank was lifted, allowing me to come aboard and I was shown to the bar. It was a hot day in Luxor, so I was thankful for the cooling temperature of the drawing-room.

No sooner had I sat down, a kind waiter in full livery and tarboush, served me a refreshing glass of hibiscus tea.

I could see the residents reading from the ship library,  which had copious copies of Death on the Nile to choose. Some of the patrons were playing board games. It was very relaxing.

The lounge and sun deck onboard the SS Sudan

Unfortunately, when I came on board the boat was at full occupancy. So, I couldn’t check out any of the cabins for myself.

But, from seeing the Death on the Nile movie and the Steam Ship Sudan website; they all look vintage boutique!

Some of the rooms have brass and antique gold wicker bed frames, and luxe deco bedding and interiors.

There are 5 suites and 18 cabins onboard the Sudan. You can even stay in the Agatha Christie Suite and a cabin dedicated to her famous detective, Hercule Poirot.

Steam Ship Sudan cabins

As we wound our way up the winding wooden staircase and over the wooden floorboards, it felt surreal. To walk along this steamer which I had seen on TV was just spectacular.

We made our way up to the lounge deck on top of the boat and found a beautiful place to pass the time and watch the world go by.

There were lounge chairs, sunbeds, tables to play chess. It really looked like the ideal place to relax with a drink and see the sights of the Nile.

I could only imagine what it would be like to catch the sunset from here. Ah, I can only dream!

A look inside the SS Sudan engine room

I always love poking my nose in to see the captain’s quarters of a ship. There’s something so interesting about modern sailing.

There’s a chair, navigation equipment and lots of shiny buttons which I didn’t understand (but so tempting to push)! Also, a phone to make calls.

You won’t find the stereotypical ships wheel like in the olden days now, although you can find it outside for show.

agatha christie nile cruise steam ship sudan death on the nile

The engine room was also fascinating. Unlike modern cruise ships, steamships work with an engine that makes a chugging sound. You can watch it spin in the engine room.

My guide told me that it’s quite loud at night, so you can hear it while you sleep. I’m quite a light sleeper myself. But, if I was on this ship I think it would be worth it!

agatha christie nile cruise steam ship sudan death on the nile

How much is the Agatha Christie Nile Cruise?

The Steam Ship Sudan runs two types of cruises. What’s great about these is they stop at more sites than most of the regular Nile Cruises including Dendera and Abydos (which usually cost extra);

  • The Dynastic – a 6 days, 5 night river cruise that runs from Luxor down to Aswan.
  • Eternal River – a 6 days, 5 night cruise from Aswan to Luxor.

Steam Ship Sudan cruise prices

Both cruises have the same rates;

  • From Oct – Apr – 2400 -2700 Euros depending on your cabin.
  • From May – Sept – 1900 – 2200 Euros depending on your cabin.

Special occasions and holidays may cost more.

You can also rent this boat out for special occasions. The captain told me about a murder mystery evening that was held onboard. I think I would die of excitement if I got to attend!

Do you love Agatha Christie?

If you’re gaga about Agatha Christie too and wanted to read more about her travels in Egypt. I have a few posts that I think you might love all about the hotels that she stayed in here on her travels.

You can read about the Old Winter Palace in Luxor and discover all the Agatha Christie secrets you can find within the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan.

All aboard the Steam Ship Sudan

If you’re a fan of the novel or movie  Death on the Nile and the queen of crime herself, then a trip on the Steam Ship Sudan is the perfect choice for you.

Don’t miss out on travelling back in time with the Agatha Christie Nile Cruise and come aboard the Steam Ship Sudan; the oldest ship still actively running on the Nile.

Wonderful blog again. The real question though is which would you recommend - the SS Sudan or MS Mayfair?

Sophie Pearce

Hi Adrian, it really depends on your budget! I found the MS Mayfair perfect and it's a fraction of the cost. But, if money is no object the SS Sudan would be a bucket list splurge! Sophie x

Wednesday 4th of May 2022

Wow what an amazing review! I’m really looking forward to do this! Could you tell me how much would it cost me to do the cruise in the Agatha Christie cabin??

Hi Dan, it will probably depend on the season you go but the Agatha Christie Suite will most likely cost you around 4,000 Euro for the week! It is not cheap! I would contact the SS Sudan team at Original Travel to ask for specific rates. https://www.originaltravel.co.uk/place/steam-ship-sudan-holidays Hope this helps, Sophie x

1984 i motored down to Aswan on a then 100 odd year gaff rig schooner Boston storm built in Boston UK as a pilot cutter....at Luxor we tied up alongside the paddle steamer for a few weeks before making our way down to komombo and Aswan .

Hi Thomas! Wow, that sounds like such an adventure. I bet travelling to Egypt must have been so different back then! I would have loved to have seen it before all the attractions were overloaded with security checks haha :) Sounds like you made some memories of a lifetime! Thanks for sharing, Sophie x

Tuesday 15th of June 2021

Hey Sophie, thank you very much indeed, that helps! By the way, I just want to say thank you for keeping this blog. I really love the way you write about each place you visit, especially how you cover the small details that other bloggers tend to overlook. I also share your passion for visiting places where authors have left their mark and hotels with history and character. Egypt is on my bucketlist and given that Covid 19 has put a stop to travelling for now, your blog is very much a way for me to live vicariously as well as build up my research for a seamless trip.

Sunday 27th of June 2021

Hi there, ah thank you! I do try to write in detail as I like to plan trips and find those were the questions I Was asking! So I put them in the post as I thought it could be useful :) Oh I hope you can visit Egypt, it really is the most magical place! Fingers crossed for you! Sophie x

The Nile , Arabic النيل, an-Nīl , is Africa 's longest river, and by most definitions the longest in the world.

Its drainage basin contains territory of Tanzania , Uganda , Rwanda , Burundi , the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Kenya , Ethiopia , Eritrea , South Sudan , Republic of the Sudan , and Egypt .

The White Nile springs from Lake Victoria, and the Blue Nile from Lake Tana in Ethiopia.

Most of the Nile flows in arid climate. In the Saharan desert of Egypt and northern Sudan, the Nile provides most of the available water for farming.

Ancient Egypt is one of the world's oldest civilizations, with its monuments being among the most famous human landmarks along the Nile. Upriver and contemporary with Ancient Egypt, Nubia was a neighbouring kingdom, which left behind equally impressive, if much less visited, monuments. Since the Roman conquest of the Nile delta, the river has been dominated by foreign empires for 2000 years; such as the Ottoman Empire and the British Empire . Since 1956, Egypt is independent, and the most populous Arab country.

Khartoum has flights from several airports in the Middle East and Africa. Port Sudan has some flights and has a bus to Khartoum. International trains and buses may also be available, depending on the political situation.

As of 2023, military conflict is ongoing in Sudan, especially Khartoum. There may be ceasefires, but they may or may not be respected. If you want to include Sudan in your journey, you should probably postpone it.

Aswan has an international airport and rail services from the rest of Egypt.

A classic way of sailing down the Egyptian portion of the river is taking a Felucca cruise on the Nile . The itinerary Alexandria to Cape Town by train and bus closely follows the river on its northern section.

The Nile river flowing through Egypt, and Sudan, which has its sources in Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi. The River starts in Luvironza River in Burundi, is 6,671 km long, and has a surface area of a total of 3,350,000 km² (5 times the area of France).

Measurements

The discharge is around 3,1 million litres per second. Its wide between 1 and 23 km. the Nile runs in Egypt around 1,532 km. Around 140 millions people live along the Nile, most of these in Egypt. The Nile carries water all through the year, but the amount of water it carries, varies depending on the season. With the construction of Aswan High Dam, this is now controlled for Egypt's part.

Tributaries

The Nile has a number of tributaries, and in Sudan its name changes at the junction of Bahru l-Ghazal. Before this point it is called Bahru l-Jabal, "Nile the Mountains", after the point Bahru l- Abyad, "White Nile". Bahru l-Abyad is at the junction of Khartoum joined by Bahru l-Azraq, "The Blue Nile", which gets its water from Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Downstream from Khartoum it is joined by the Atbara River, and this is the last of the tributaries.

Dams on the Nile

There are more dams than the one at Aswan, in Sudan the Blue Nile is dammed by Sennar Dam. The White Nile is dammed just before Khartoum. Both are important for local agriculture. The Nile ends in a delta area, that is also its most fertile, in northern Egypt. Due to this, 3,300 km² of new land have come under irrigation.

Nasser lake

Fish has been set out in the lake, and there have been a few modest attempts of land reclamation along the lake's shores. The arrival of the Lake Nasser submerged large areas of Nubian territory in Sudan, for which little indemnity was paid. One of the greatest monuments of Pharaoh Egypt, the temples at Abu Simbel were saved by a UN funded team that worked on location from 1964 until 1968.
