A must for car lovers, see Japan's cutting-edge manufacturing in action

Get an up-close look at the latest in car technology during a 90-minute tour of Nissan's Oppama plant, one of the country's largest plants. Electric and e-POWER-equipped vehicles are built at this sprawling facility.

Quick Facts

The tours are only available in Japanese, so interpreters are needed

The tours are usually held twice a day in the morning and afternoon for individual and group visitors

The tour involves walking alongside the production line for about 20 minutes

Depending on participant numbers, you may be grouped with other visitors

How to Get There

Oppama Station is about a 25-minute train ride from Yokohama Station on the Keihin Kyuko Line. Getting from Oppama Station to the plant requires a 20-minute walk.

nissan factory tour price

Size and technology

A 5-minute video presentation kicks off the tour. You will be given a brief but interesting introduction to the plant and its activities, including its size, more than 1.7 million square meters; its number of employees, more than 3,000; and its methods of manufacturing, which use the latest technology and delivery systems to avoid wasting materials and time. It takes around 24 hours to build a car from start to finish.

Ready for the world

The tour includes a trip to the wharf area, where cars are loaded on ships for delivery to other ports in Japan and overseas. If you are lucky, you will see the professional drivers load the cars on the ships at a pace of 100 cars an hour, parking them only 10 centimeters apart.

Robot choreography

The visit to the assembly line is the highlight of the tour. The Oppama Plant became the first in Japan to use robots on the production line when it introduced welding robots in 1970. The robots are still an amazing sight to see as they twist and rotate with the precision and grace of an automated ballet.

Nissan team knows that much of our best work is done outside of our plants. Whether it is volunteering at a local school or building a new family home, we’re proud to support the wellbeing of our families, friends and neighbors.

Nissan assembles some of the most legendary products in the industry.

The process starts in our three manufacturing facilities in Smyrna and Decherd, Tennessee, and in Canton, Mississippi. Nissan's cutting-edge electric vehicle technology drives the future of automotive innovation at our Nissan manufacturing plants.

Steel to Wheels

Before a vehicle goes on the assembly line, the New Model Team uses 3D technology (think airline pilot in a flight simulator) and virtual reality tools to evaluate the ergonomics and placement of auto parts during manufacturing. The goal is to use tech to make sure vehicles can be assembled safely and consistently.

From stamping to final inspection, it takes an average of 20 hours to build* one vehicle.

White Nissan Titan in production at factory

A flat sheet of metal is placed into one of our stamping presses, applying up to 5,400 tons of pressure to shape each part of the chassis. In the next phase, the dies are used as giant cookie cutters to press the forms into three-dimensional shapes that together create the interior and exterior frame of the vehicle.

Nissan plant professionals shaping metal parts

Our vehicles begin to take shape when thousands of robots electrically weld the parts from stamping together to create the familiar envelope and enclosure. At this point, the full vehicle – known as the body in white – is fully visible and prepped for paint.

Nissan worker buffing and polishing car exterior

Each body in white is a masterpiece, waiting to be painted. Moving on a continuous conveyor, it’s dipped into an anti-corrosive bath to protect it from future rust, and then sealed to keep water out. Spark-proof robots evenly apply the color using a three-step process: base coat, main color and gloss coat. Camera systems review every square inch of a vehicle in a few seconds to help it shine bright like a diamond.

Trim & Chassis

This is where the vehicle comes to life. Hundreds of skilled technicians equip the vehicle with the dash, steering wheel, seats, electrical components, engine, wheels, tires and more. To complete its outfit, the doors, hood and rear hatch – which have all followed the chassis on a separate conveyor belt – are put on by technicians.

Seasoned Nissan assembly line specialist

Once a vehicle comes off the line for the first time, many inspection points are assessed for safety, reliability and dependability for overall customer satisfaction. And finally, the full outfit is driven on the runway—tested on a one-mile track before making its way to a local dealer.

Nissan knows the communities where we live and work are vital to the well-being of our team members.

Nissan’s investments in our team members have rippling impacts across organizations and neighborhoods. Through the Nissan Foundation and Nissan Neighbors , we support local non-profits as they fulfill their missions to serve others and promote greater understanding.

Free Nissan plant tour offers start-to-finish look at car manufacturing

nissan factory tour price

If you enjoy getting an inside look at how things are made, you are in luck — especially if you like cars.

The enormous Smyrna Nissan plant offers a free guided tour  with a start-to-finish look at how cars are assembled.

A group of friends and I toured the 6-million-square-foot plant last month, and all of us (none of whom professed to know anything about cars or manufacturing) marveled at the size of the plant, the technology used and the volume of vehicles this facility turns out.

The precision is remarkable. When they're building a machine as complex as an automobile in a plant the size of 114 football fields, you have to wonder how the right parts arrive in the right location at the right time — over and over again.

With the technology, sophisticated robotics and hardworking employees, a finished car rolls off the line every 30 seconds.

Nissan tour experience

You can reserve a tour at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. After arriving for our Thursday afternoon visit, we were ushered into a spacious room to view a 10-minute film with history and an overview of the 36-year-old plant that can produce a mind-boggling 640,000 Nissan vehicles a year.

We then boarded a tram with about 50 others. We were instructed to put on headphones and safety glasses for the tour, which takes you through almost all of the steps of the car manufacturing process. There are unobstructed views of the assembly work on both sides of the aisles, as well as overhead, where tracks move partially finished vehicles from one line to another.

As you proceed through the plant, you see the various steps that take a big block of steel to a shiny, ready-to-drive vehicle in just 24 hours. The five steps are stamping, body assembly, painting, trimming and pre-delivery.

The stamping area, where the process starts with 20-ton rolls of steel getting stamped into the frames and various car parts, is the loudest part of the tour. It was interesting, but we strained to hear our guide's commentary about how the pieces are stamped to the width of half a penny and then stacked and transported to holding areas until needed on the various lines.

The painting line was fascinating, with surreal-looking robotic arms capable of painting a vehicle one color, and the next one a different color. We all wrongly assumed the paint line would apply one color one day and another the next, instead of the robots being able to switch up to any of the 13 color choices along the way.

You can literally see sparks fly in the body shop areas where more robots are welding parts together. There could be 3,000 welds per vehicle.

The trim and chassis area is where the vehicle really comes to life, with seats, steering wheel, infotainment system, doors, tires and more being installed.

The final step, where each car goes through a lengthy regimen of tests, including an actual test drive, was heartening.

"We will not release any vehicle until it has passed all the tests, including the rough road test," said Nissan Communications Manager Lloryn Love-Carter.

The Nissan workers are friendly, waving and smiling at their tram traveling visitors. We definitely felt welcome.

Fun facts

Our guide, Barbara Handler, said the 8,000 Smyrna plant employees work three Monday through Friday shifts.

The Smyrna plant is the highest volume vehicle assembly plant in North America. The plant is capable of producing 2,500 vehicles a day at peak production.

The plant has an estimated 700 technician-supported robots doing jobs including painting and welding.

Models produced in the plant include Altima, Maxima, Pathfinder, Leaf, Rogue and Infinity QX60. The Rogue is the best-selling Nissan vehicle.

The plant has produced 13 million cars and SUVs since it opened in June 1983.

There is an average annual payroll of more than $290 million.

The plant is on 884 acres.

The total investment in the plant over its 36 years is $6.8 billion.

Scheduling a visit

Nissan plant tours are offered at no charge at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Nissan officials recommend requesting a tour at least four weeks in advance.

To request a tour, call 615-459-1444 or email [email protected] .

Once your tour is booked, you will get an email confirmation with parking instructions, a parking pass and other details.

You must be at least 10 years old to take the tour, which lasts an hour to an hour and a half.

No cellphones, cameras or recording devices are allowed. You cannot wear open-toe shoes.

There is plenty of free parking.

There is a gift shop where you can shop before or after the tour.

ABOUT TOCHIGI PLANT

FEATURES OF TOCHIGI PLANT

Nissan intelligent factory -first of its kind in japan.

This is the first time that innovative production technologies have been deployed to support manufacturing the next generation of cars, focusing on "technologies for building cars of the future," "robots nurtured by master craftsmen," "symbiosis between humans and robots," and "zero-emission production systems," to build sustainable cars that are friendly to both people and the environment. As one of our carbon neutral initiatives, we have reduced the energy consumption required for production, and in the painting process, we have reduced CO2 emissions by 25%.

Exciting Tour Course

We have prepared an exciting tour course with the aim of making the plant a place where customers want to come again! First ever deployment at a domestic production plant! Starting with a virtual tour of the coating process using projection mapping, we will take you through the latest technologies of the Nissan Intelligent Factory, robots with skills imparted by master craftsmen, and the assembly line of the new EV Nissan ARIYA. At the end of the tour, stuffs will be waiting to send you off with a smile.

Beautification activities around the Plant

We have planted 900 meters of mossy cherry trees around the plant, which can be seen from the new Route 4. In the spring, local residents remark on how beautiful they look.

A nature-friendly plant that can sustain ecosystems

We have created a biotope by reusing wastewater from the factory to support fireflies and heike fireflies. The fireflies zoom around, emitting a faint light that is soothing in early summer.

A plant with bountiful nature

Beetles raised in the rich natural forest of the Tochigi Plant are gifted to local kindergartens, as a summer dividend from the bountiful nature around the plant.

15 We really want to look at it at the last time!

The Guest Hall is now under the facility construction. Just before the construction began, two cute brothers came to visit us saying, "We really want to look at GT-R!"

nissan factory tour price

Particularly the elder brother loves GT-R, and he sat in the driver's seat with great joy! The younger brother who was looking his elder enjoyed feeling like a driver by copying his elder brother. Their very happy smile gave us good healing and relaxation. We would be delighted if they will visit us to attend our Plant Tour for the next time♡ We are looking forward to seeing them again soon.

※Plant Tours are currently conducted (The Guest Hall is closed during the construction period). Please check the outline of tours, and apply through the reservation calendar.

14 At the beginning of the new year

We would like to introduce you a wonderful New Year's greeting card from a student who attended our online Plant Tour. He is good at drawing and we were impressed by his drawing of cool GT-R. Furthermore, his writing is amazing and please take a look.

nissan factory tour price

Happy New Year. About 5 months ago I attended a Nissan Plant Tour as a ○○ elementary school online class and learned. I am very happy that we could enjoy learning. Using Nissan Technology, please manufacture nice cars in the future as well. It was a very nice opportunity for me. Thank you.

As those words made our PA members happy from the beginning of the year, and we have become more motivated. In 2024, we are providing Plant Tours which our customers can enjoy their time here.

12 [For the first time in 10 years...]

The other day, a student who drove a Nissan car visited our Guest Hall. Surprisingly, he said that he attended a plant tour with his family 10 years ago ! We are so happy to hear that he clearly remembered color and model of the minicar he received as a souvenir of the tour. He showed us a picture at that time, and took a commemorative photo in the same way as 10 years ago! All PA members were impressed that the plant tour became a wonderful memory for him and come back after a decade. Why don't you visit our Guest Hall in Tochigi Plant with your memorable photo or to make new memories?

11 [The Environmental Tour was held!]

Nissan is manufacturing sustainable cars that are friendly to both people and the environment. We introduced our environmental initiatives to the students of an elementary school in Kaminokawa-machi where Tochigi Plant is located. They have learned about global warming and electric vehicles and they also experienced “water treatment” by using pet bottles at the Water Quality Management Center! On the site of the Plant there is the biotope where we are raising fireflies using the regenerated water after the treatment and the students observed the killifishes swimming. These students were so excited when they had the model car running test using the electricity created themselves. We are happy that they had fun learning with us.

10 [NISSAN GT-R the model of 2024]

We have exchanged GT-Rs to the model of 2024 in our Guest Hall. Here is the question! Which is the GT-R the new model of 2024?

nissan factory tour price

Did you know the answer? GT-R the model of 2024 is the one on the RIGHT side. The design of GT-R has intended for the performance evolution, and every configuration has its meaning. Please enjoy the change of the design when you compare these two pictures. You can feel free to look around the exhibition and vehicles in the Guest Hall. Please visit our Guest Hall. June 9, 2023

09 Jumping out of Tochigi and visiting Oppama Plant!

Our Plant Attendant Team visited Nissan Oppama Plant. As Plant Attendant, we carry out various activities to provide better guide for our customers. One of the important activities for us is interacting with other Plant Attendants from different plants. In these years, we haven't seen each other face to face as we mainly had online interacting with other members. It has been years since we visited other plants at the last time. ⇩Please look at our smiling faces by the joyous reunion through fun activities with them.
