What Our Guests Are Saying

We enjoyed greatly our tour today.

Our tour guide, Phoenix, was very knowledgeable, had a good wit, and shared many, many nuggets of information that made the trip interesting and full of energy. Even when we asked about other points of interest we thought he might know about he was able provide name and an interesting nugget about it. He met children’s interests as well as adults. Will definitely tell others about your service and have them look for Phoenix. Thank you all.

...Money well spent and made our trip

Today, we did the last tour of the day with Scribe as our tour guide and he was phenomenal! He was knowledgeable, extremely affable and made us feel like family. My husband said it was money well spent and made our trip! Such an asset to your company! Thanks for your service today, Scribe.

...I cannot wait to visit Boston again soon

Your driver, Maureen, was by far the most memorable part of our trip. Her enthusiasm and energy lit up the entire trolley. She’s is passionate about her home town, packed full of tons and tons of information, and lovely to make the entire experience a GREAT one. My friends and I cannot wait to visit Boston again soon, and are hoping to have Maureen as our trolley driver. Thank you for a great traveling experience…

I learned more about Boston on that tour than in the seven years I lived there

My husband and I were in Boston after 25 years. We decided last minute to take one of your trolley tours. We had such a wonderful time! I learned more about Boston on that tour than in the seven years I lived there. Our guide Hugo was the BEST! He kept us laughing the whole time…

Without OTT, my aging parents would have struggled to see Boston

I’m grateful for the hop on/off tours; without them my aging parents would have struggled to see Boston; and they loved hearing the history. Perfect segue: We had several different guides… Book was far/away our favorite. Good storyteller, quick wit, quite helpful. Interesting guy… But seriously, really enjoyed his tour.

...An unforgettable experience

My girlfriend and I wanted to say how great Billy Ketch was. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable about your great city, his sense of humor and personality made this an unforgettable experience.

...No comparison to yours

I am an International Tour Director from Britain. I have just gotten my schedule and will be giving the heads up for the Old Town Trolley Tours which I hope all my pax will be taking while on their stay in Boston. I was given passes to go onto the other trolleys and NO COMPARISON to yours. Everyone is great and I have gotten to know most of the drivers from years past. They are the best and have the best tour…

...Truly fascinated with Billy’s knowledge

My friends, husband and I were on the Trolley with Billy last week and had the BEST tour! Having been an American History teacher for 30 years, I was truly fascinated with Billy’s knowledge and experience with the tour! Even my friends who are not especially interested in History, thought that Billy was the greatest tour guide they had ever had.

Thanks for an awesome visit

This was a great way to see the city. The two tour guides were both friendly and EXTREMELY knowledgeable. I would recommend this tour to anybody visiting Boston. I even dazzled my friends later in the week with all that I knew of the city. Thanks for an awesome visit!!!

...The best part of our trip to Boston

Just did a Tour with JD last weekend. He was awesome…… the tour was the best part of our trip to Boston. Not sure if you have a survey….. just wanted you to know he got an A+++ Thank you!

What is the best way to see Beacon Hill? + -

Boston’s most picturesque neighborhood is Beacon Hill, an area that boasts stunning architecture, cobblestone streets, and charming boutiques. For those who want to make the most of their time and see Beacon Hill from a unique perspective, hopping on the Old Town Trolley is the way to go.

The first stop of the Old Town Trolley in Beacon Hill is at the Massachusetts State House. From this towering location, visitors can take in the stunning panoramic views of the city and the Charles River. The tour guide will provide visitors with fascinating facts about the State House’s history, including the famous codfish atop its dome, the symbol of Boston’s fishing industry.

The trolley then takes visitors through the heart of Beacon Hill’s residential area, a place filled with old brick houses, antique gas lamps, and postcard-perfect scenery. The highlight of this tour is undoubtedly the stop at the Old North Church, known as the church that started the U.S. Revolution.

Continuing down Beacon Hill, the trolley stops at the legendary Cheers bar, also known as the set of the hit TV show, “Cheers.” Visitors can sit at the same bar where Norman and Cliff once did, take photos, and enjoy the historic décor.

Boston’s Beacon Hill is a hidden treasure of American history, and the Old Town Trolley is the perfect way to experience it. From the State House’s panoramic views to the blue skies to stopping at a bar where everyone knows your name, this tour offers visitors a unique way to see the city’s hidden treasures while learning about Boston’s vibrant past.

Which are the must-visit attractions in Boston? + -

Here are some of the must-see attractions that you can explore on the Old Town Trolley Tour:

1. The Freedom Trail: This iconic 2.5-mile-long trail takes you through 16 significant historical sites that were crucial to the American Revolution. You’ll see the Massachusetts State House, Paul Revere’s House, Old North Church, the USS Constitution Museum, and more. The Freedom Trail is a fascinating way to learn about the city’s rich history.

2. Acorn Street: Located in Beacon Hill, this street is a throwback to Colonial times with its cobblestone streets, gas lamps, and impeccably preserved 19th-century homes. Its houses are some of the oldest in Boston, and their exteriors have remained mostly unchanged for over a century. Acorn Street’s timeless look and feel, mixed with its New England charm, has made it a favorite among filmmakers.

3. Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum: The Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum is an interactive, high-tech, floating museum. Unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before, this unique museum sits on a barge in the water and includes tours on restored tea ships and a stunning, interactive documentary that immerses you into the events that led up to the American Revolution.

4. Quincy Market: This colorful marketplace is a shopper’s paradise, with more than 100 vendors selling everything from souvenirs to food. You can indulge in some classic Boston dishes such as clam chowder or a lobster roll.

5. Bunker Hill Monument: This 221-foot granite obelisk commemorates the Battle of Bunker Hill, which was a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. You can climb to the top for a stunning view of the city.

Can you tour Boston at night? + -

My fiance and I used the Trolley when visiting Boston this past summer. We had a 1-day ticket and were able to see A LOT. If you want to do everything on the tour, you really need the two day pass. We skipped some things because we were short on time and we also didn't have another day before moving to the next leg of our New England trip. My one frustration with the trolleys is that you can get unlucky and get denied if a trolley is full. I could see situations arising on busy days where you could be stuck waiting a long time at a stop, which would be frustrating. We were never turned away because we were pretty aggressive when the trolleys pulled up (people bunch up more than wait in a line). The drivers have many fun facts to share, and some really, really cheesy jokes to compliment them. Makes for a very enjoyable time!

Photo of Scott N.

While it does let you hop on and off reliably that's about the only benefit. We did it on a whim and the 'guide' just rambles and isn't interesting. Not like the ones in London at all

Photo of Melissa F.

Totally not worth the money. I've used old town trolley in three different cities so I was shocked that the Boston experience was so subpar compared to its counterparts. When we first boarded at stop 1 we were told it would be 15 minutes until we departed. We waited about 35 minutes for the tour to start. We were told that a trolley would be available at each stop every 20 minutes. We got off at the Boston Tea Party stop (14) and when we went back to the stop we waited 47 minutes for a trolley to pick us up. At another stop we had to wait almost 30 minutes for a pickup. There's no way to see everything with the huge gaps of time between pickups. Also they advertise 18 stops. What they don't tell you is the last 4 stops are just hotel stops on a different line. Also there was a big gap of knowledge/entertainment between the drivers. Two we had were good, the third was not. We ended up just paying for an Uber so we could see a few more things. When we called customer service, they basically just put us on hold until we gave up and hung up. If you have two or more people you'd be better off just paying for a Uber. It will be cheaper and you'll get to see more. Totally felt ripped off and our day was wasted waiting around. We missed a bunch of places we wanted to see.

Christmas trolley tour The tour guides and hosts were incredible and very knowledgeable! They helped accommodate our large group's seating arrangement. No complaints there! The trolley ride itself was nothing to shout about. It was a rainy day so I'll give the tour the benefit of the doubt that it may be better on a clear day, but the windows were completely fogged up and we couldn't see out. Everyone was constantly trying to use something to wipe the condensation off. There wasn't much to the tour - it was interesting to learn about the history of the Boston Commons Christmas tree, but otherwise, we weren't too impressed by the Christmas lights. The tour consisted of: - Boston Commons (got off the trolley to see the tree) + some storytelling - Charles street - Newbury Street while talking about Christmas shopping (I thought driving down Commonwealth would have been better with all the trees lit up!) - Driving past the Snowport festival The ticket expected a 90-minute tour but we concluded in about an hour. The "gift" that's included in the tour were candy canes offered at the end of the tour. Again, the guides were great! Loved their commitment and characters. Otherwise, I wouldn't spend the money. I'm sure the normal tour around Boston is much more detailed and exciting!

Photo of Ann P.

There were not nearly enough trolleys. We waited 45 mins for a trolly to come. At other stops, people would get on who had likewise waited 45 mins. It was too bad because you could already see that people were upset and were not going to enjoy the experience. One stop had about 4 kids getting on with the mom and the mom was upset about waiting. It's hard waiting with kids that long especially when it's supposed to take 20 mins. People called the trolley company (including myself when we were waiting) and it did no good. I didn't "hop on and off" because I knew another trolley wouldn't be coming. By comparison, you couldn't go 5-10 mins without seeing the duck tour trolleys. Likely a better option to avoid long waits.

Photo of Tricia M.

Heads up they want you to be pretty quiet/whisper while onboard and silence all cellphones. The waits can be quite long, we were told 10 minutes but it is easily 30 minute waits for a trolley to come thru. They give a bit of history, but if you get on at stop 10 and want to go to stop 2, they make you get off and go stand in another line. We were not informed of this during booking, so super annoying. We had 4 different drivers throughout the day, most were pretty decent, but some were just a mess.

This was our first hop on-hop off tour in Boston. We did find out that this group has multiple buses and they run about every 15min apart. I also found out this is a well established group and the guides are knowledgable about the history as well as providing directions to other sights nearby. Look at it this way, if you know what you want to see in Boston then this can likely get you there (or nearby). You hop off and take your time and then hop on to head back to your starting point or another destination. All along the way hearing about other sights and historical events. On the inside the buses are terraced so basically everyone has a decent view. They're open air which can be good or bad. No drinking or smoking. Watch for the stairs entering or leaving. All in all worth the ticket price. We got a one day pass. Multiple day passes and other bundles are also available. Urban Cowgill Aug 2023

We took this tour on 10/24/23. Our tour guide and bus driver, Crafty was the best ever! His knowledge of Boston was amazing but his sense of humor is why I am leaving a 5 star review. I highly recommend anyone in the Boston area to take this tour and ask for Crafty, you won't be disappointed.

We scheduled the night before, with no notifications on the website that most pickups stops are closed for a parade. We called to get to find out what was going on, and no refund was offered. We were told to go to the website for a refund. there is no way to do it on the website, so we sent an email. Update: they did email back, waiting to see what happens.

Only stop that had this. Stop 9 nothing.

I took the 7:30 pm tour because it came with my hotel stay and it was a nice, relaxed way to see the city. On this tour, there is no stopping, you just ride for 90 minutes. It was July and hot and so it was nice to be able to relax and cool off. Our guide Crafty was a lot of fun and recommended that we roll up the plastic window shades and he was definitely right about being able to see better. This was my second trip to Boston and I still saw some things I hadn't seen before. I gave this five stars not because it is a must do, but if you like these kind of bus tours, it is a good one. Just the right amount of info to fun. I wish I had done this on my first night bc there were some spots I was interested in learning more about. I also like that it gave me something to do at night bc my friends left a couple of days before me and sometimes evenings are a bit boring when you're on your own. Tip - sit on the right side of the bus (opposite of driver) in the middle of the bus.

Brilliantly entertaining afternoon with CRAFTY

Fantastic way to see beautiful Boston. Our driver Crafty was so entertaining we didn't even `hop off` !! All in all a brilliant few hours, well worth doing.

We happen to agree, Crafty is amazing. We're so happy you had such a wonderful time, and we hope you'll visit us again when you're in one of our destination cities. Thank you for sharing your experience!

We were sold the Trolley by a broker which means we paid too much. Book online. However, the experience itself was awesome. We had a driver named Townie who was absolutely hilarious even when he was bustin your chops. It made the experience so much better. We also had a driver on his 2nd day named King. He was also very very informative and funny. If you're waiting around noon you may have a bit longer wait than you may have wanted due to shift change. This is a great way to see Boston. Very satisfied.

We're so happy to hear you had a great time! Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience. I'm sure our team also loves seeing their names on here. We hope you'll come back for more next time you're in one of our other destinations.

THIS IS THE TROLLEY COMPANY TO USE!!! This is a great company. The buses are clean comfortable. The drivers are very well informed and they are very personable and friendly. We had the pleasure of having a driver by the name of a miss Jackson. She was fabulous. She knew so much history, she made the city of Boston come alive. The entire tour that we spent with her was very interesting. I felt like I got to know Boston very well because of her we chose to ride the tour completely around their 14 stops. All of the stops are close to landmarks that you will want to go to …for example you stop right in front of cheers Other companies do not do this. I felt safe. I would recommend this company to anyone visiting the Boston area. There is real value to this company.

Wow, thank you for that wonderful review! We're glad to know we made it worthwhile. Our guides work hard to make their presentations interesting, and we love sharing these comments with them. We hope to see you again!

What they don’t tell you is trolleys don’t run during shift change. So, you stand outside waiting and wondering what’s happening for almost an hour during the middle of the day while they get themselves organized. Also, one of our guides was amazing - one was inaudible. Neither of us could understand anything he said. This same tour in Nashville was amazing - none of these issues. I was very disappointed with it in Boston.

We were sorry to read you are dissatisfied with our tour. We stand behind our efforts with a Satisfaction Guarantee. You can read about it by selecting, "100% Satisfaction Guarantee" on our website, trolley tours dot com. Or, go directly to trolley tours dot com/guarantee. We hope you will try us again in one of our other services in the future.

Basic tour of historic/tourist sites similar to tours we've taken in other cities. Comfortable coach and personable driver/host. One complaint. I called beforehand to ask about picking the tour up at the South Rail Station and was told that there was a tour stop near the station. It may have been near for a younger person, but it was quite a hike for a couple of octogenarians.

Oh no! Seems like you didn't quite have the fantastic 5-star experience we strive to offer our guests. If you'd like to contact us directly at [email protected] we would like to hear how can we improve.

The tour was great, Ms. Beantown was funny and knowledgeable, we hopped off at stop 13 and never made it back to the trolley, we wanted to walk the freedom trail. We also stopped at Cheers for lunch. Overall, great time and tour.

Frequently Asked Questions about Boston Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley Tour

How long does a full tour of boston take if i don't get on and off at all.

The Old Town Trolley Tour is approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes if you ride the tour all the way around without getting off and on.

How many times can I go through the loop?

You may ride the Old Town Trolley Tour as often as you wish. However, you should get off and on as you go and take advantage of the sights. As the day wears on, many attractions will get increasingly busy, so it’s often best to take advantage of the stops as you go. In addition, you will hear essentially the same information presented each time you go on tour, although presented by each driver with his or her style and flair.

Can I bring my stroller on board the trolley?

Yes, the trolley can accommodate strollers, but they must be collapsible and will be stored up front with the conductor. Strollers in the aisleways would constitute a safety hazard.

Are dogs allowed on the Boston Old Town Trolley tours?

Service animals are the only animals that are allowed on board the trolleys. A service animal means a dog, regardless of breed or type, that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of a qualified individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. Animal species other than dogs, emotional support animals, comfort animals, companion animals, and service animals in training are not service animals.

What language are the tours in?

All Boston Old Town Trolley hop-on hop-off tours are in English.

How knowledgeable are the conductors about Boston?

The conductors are great storytellers and entertainers! They all undergo a rigorous six-week training program to ensure that their tour is safe, their information is accurate, and their customer service is outstanding.

Are the tours narrated?

Yes, knowledgeable, expert guides fully narrate the Old Town Trolley. No pre-recordings. However, an Old Town Trolley Tour is more than just a narration, it’s an experience! You’ll hear sound effects and much more.

Are the trolleys enclosed?

The trolleys are open-air vehicles but have plastic “isinglass” windows that can roll up or down depending on the weather conditions.

Does the tour still operate in inclement weather?

Yes, the tours operate rain or shine, hot or cold, year-round. Old Town Trolley uses glass-enclosed heated trolleys specifically for the colder weather. Occasionally, they are forced to close operations for safety reasons due to extreme conditions such as blizzards.

Can I bring my luggage onboard?

Space on the trolleys is limited, but in some cases, it may be acceptable to bring a small suitcase on board. Bear in mind that the trolleys are designed specifically for sightseeing and therefore contain limited storage space (as compared to motor coaches).

  • 6 Coolest Towns in Massachusetts for a Summer Vacation in 2024

No summer vacation is complete without a day at the beach. Luckily, Massachusetts is the perfect destination for a coastal holiday. The big cities of Salem and Boston often get more notice in Massachusetts, however, several small towns within the state promise vacationers a unique and memorable experience.

Let’s explore six of the coolest towns in Massachusetts with historical, natural, and commercial attractions, and quaint atmospheres for an unforgettable 2024 summer vacation.

June or July 2024 is a great time to visit, especially for music lovers. Each year, the town hosts the Rockport Chamber Music Festival. It will be held from June 7 to July 7, 2024, and feature performances by blues, jazz, and indie singers.

For a quiet, rejuvenating outdoor experience, visitors can explore the 500 acres of Kennedy Park. The park offers 15 miles of hiking trails, an observation point, and old carriage roads amidst serene hardwood forests.

Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is an equally pleasant experience. It has 7 miles of hiking trails, and 1300 acres of wetlands, forests, and meadows. Additionally, visitors can go canoeing or bird watching through the Sanctuary.
