Trophée Hassan II de Golf

Welcome letter from PGA TOUR Champions President Miller Brady: - 2024 Edition -

On behalf of PGA TOUR Champions, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 48 th Hassan II Trophy Tournament. The 2023 season saw our Tour return to Morocco for the first time since 2020 and the first appearance of PGA TOUR Champions at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Morocco’s capital city of Rabat.

Last year’s Hassan II Trophy saw Stephen Ames earn a five-shot victory, kickstarting a season in which he won four times and finished a career-best sixth in the Charles Schwab Cup Standings.

PGA TOUR Champions is proud to partner with the Royal Moroccan Golf Federation (RMGF) and the Hassan II Golf Trophy Association (ATH) which serve as world-class hosts for this one-of-a-kind event.

It is my honor to thank His Majesty King Mohammed VI for His Royal Patronage and His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid , President of the Royal Moroccan Federation and the Hassan II Golf Trophy Association for being a longtime supporter of golf on our tour.

We are excited to welcome a field of legendary players, including World Golf Hall of Fame members and major champions, to this event.

We are elated to be joining the LET as they compete for the Lalla Meryem Cup, a tournament which has been played annually since 1993 and was added to their tournament schedule in 2010.

The 2024 season on PGA TOUR Champions features a total of 28 events to be staged across 19 states in the Unites States and three international countries (Morocco, Scotland, Canada).  In addition to great competition, PGA TOUR Champions events are important vehicles for charitable giving, and we look forward to continuing that important tradition throughout 2024.

We appreciate the media and Royal Golf Dar Es Salam staff for their dedication to making this tournament a huge success.

Enjoy a great week!

Miller Brady

President, PGA TOUR Champions

Stephen ames goes wire-to-wire in morocco for third pga tour champions win at trophy hassan ii, share this article.

Stephen Ames’ game was sharp, but the trophy he’s bringing home is even sharper.

Ames ran away with the Trophy Hassan II at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat, Morocco, for his third PGA Tour Champions victory. He went wire-to-wire, carding an even-par final round to finish at 9 under for the tournament.

His final round consisted of 18 pars. His reward? A giant knife.

“This is up there with all the good events, great events that we have on our tour right now,” Ames said. “The beauty about this event is the fact that it’s in another country, which I’m used to traveling and playing the world. For me, I enjoy coming here because of the cuisine, of the food. I enjoy it very much. This is very much up my alley when I came here.”

Mark Hensby got as close as one shot behind Ames, but a pair of double bogeys let Ames cruise to victory. Hensby finished second, his highest finish in 11 career starts on the PGA Tour Champions.

The tour’s next event is in Naples, Florida, at Tiburon Golf Club for the Chubb Classic.

PGA Tour Champions 2023 schedule features return to Coachella Valley and Morocco — and a record $66 million in prize money

Bigger and better.

That’s the theme of the 2023 PGA Tour Champions schedule, which features the return of an overseas stop and as well as the first event in Coachella Valley since 1993.

The headliner, though, is another record amount of prize money as there will be $66 million up for grabs in 2023 at 28 events — 25 during the regular season and three tournaments that make up the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs. That’s up $4 million from the 2022 season.

“Thanks to the strength of our tournament and title sponsors, the future and stability of PGA Tour Champions has never been more secure,” PGA Tour Champions president Miller Brady said in a statement. “We are thrilled to have the highest purses in PGA Tour Champions history and to be able to bring the game of golf to the many wonderful venues on this Tour.”

In all, the 2023 slate will see tournaments in 20 states and three countries.

There is one new tournament on the schedule in 2023, the Galleri Classic, which will be held in Rancho Mirage, California, at the historic Mission Hills Country Club. In 2022, Mission Hills hosted an LPGA major for the last time.

Now the southern California desert will sub in the Champions tour, which was last in the area in 1993 when the Gulfstream Aerospace Invitational — won by Raymond Floyd — was played for the final time at Indian Wells Golf Resort.

There will be five majors once again. The first two are back-to-back events (with a week off in between) on the schedule in May. The remaining three are also consecutive events on the schedule but they will also have a week off in between.

May 11-14: Regions Tradition, Greystone Golf & Country Club, Birmingham, Alabama

May 25-28: KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, Fields Ranch East, Frisco, Texas

June 29-July 2: U.S. Senior Open Championship, SentryWorld, Stevens Point, Wisconsin

July 13-16: Kaulig Companies Championship, Firestone Country Club, Akron, Ohio

July 24-30, The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex, Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, Bridgend, Wales

The playoff events will be:

Oct. 19-22: Dominion Energy Charity Classic, The Country Club of Virginia, Richmond, Virginia

Nov. 2-5: TimberTech Championship, The Old Course at Broken Sound Club, Boca Raton, Florida

Nov. 9-12: Charles Schwab Cup Championship, Phoenix Country Club, Phoenix

Each event in 2023 will be televised by Golf Channel, with NBC picking up weekend coverage of three majors: KitchenAid Senior PGA, the U.S. Senior Open and the Senior Open.

Angel Cabrera set to make PGA Tour Champions return in Morocco after serving jail time

Angel Cabrera , who won the 2007 U.S. Open and the 2009 Masters, will return to the PGA Tour Champions this week in Morocco, per Doug Ferguson of The Associated Press .

Cabrera has not played on the PGA Tour Champions since September 2020, when he withdrew from the PURE Insurance Championship.

A few months after that, Brazilian authorities arrested Cabrera on assault charges involving former romantic partners , according to The New York Post .

He was then extradited to Argentina and served another two years in prison. Argentinian authorities released Cabrera in August 2023 .

Then, in December 2023, the PGA Tour cleared Cabrera to compete in tour-sanctioned events, thus paving the way for the 54-year-old Argentine to return to the PGA Tour Champions.

Now, Cabrera will tee it up in Morocco, where the Trophy Hassan II marks the third PGA Tour Champions event of the season.

This tournament, hosted by Moroccan Prince Moulay Rachid, is named after King Hassan II, who served as the King of Morocco from 1961 until his death in 1999.

Originally founded in 1971, this event bodes an impressive list of champions, as Lee Trevino, Roger Maltbie, Payne Stewart , Collin Montgomerie, and Padraig Harrington have all triumphed.

From 2010 to 2019, the Trophy Hassan II was an official event on the European Tour, but COVID-19 upended this tournament from 2020 to 2022.

Then, tournament organizers and tour brass decided to sanction this as an official event on the PGA Tour Champions, with the 2023 iteration being the first of its kind.

Stephen Ames, who won last week’s rain-shortened Chubb Classic , won in Morocco last year by five shots over Mark Hensby of Australia.

Aussies on Tour: Green to make Champions Tour debut in Morocco

pga tour champions morocco 2023

It’s the tour he’s had his eye on for more than two years but Richard Green probably didn’t expect to make his Champions Tour debut in Morocco.

The exotic locale in North Africa hosts not only the Champions Tour’s second event of the year this week but also the Ladies European Tour’s Lalla Meryem Cup will be played on the Blue Course at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.

A long-time member of the DP World Tour, Green is no stranger to playing in foreign countries and will have the familiar face of countryman Rod Pampling for the first two rounds to assist in his transition to the US senior ranks.

Medalist at qualifying school in December and 10 days out from his 52nd birthday, Green told PGATOUR.com’s Bob McLellan that it marks the realisation of a career-long dream.

“Throughout my whole career on the European Tour my goals in my life were always to come and play in the US at some point,” said Green, who at his peak was ranked as high as 29th in the world.

“I had opportunities through the mid-2000s through having a top 50 world ranking and playing eligible events through that criteria but never got a PGA TOUR card. I left that goal on the table if you like.

“Wanting to fulfill that goal, the opportunity when I turned 50 presented itself to come play on PGA TOUR Champions.

“I was full steam ahead for that. I think that drive to get that position is what helped me be successful in the qualifying.”

Of the past 10 medalists at PGA TOUR Champions Q-School, four have gone on to win on the Champions Tour. Green is looking forward to testing his game against the best competition the world has to offer.

“I don’t relate to the guys on the PGA TOUR or European Tour anymore,” said Green, who won the 1997 Dubai Desert Classic in a playoff over Greg Norman and Ian Woosnam.

“I relate to the guys on the Champions Tour. Over the course of my career, I was playing against some of the guys, like Padraig Harrington, or when I played in the majors in the US against all the guys on the Champions Tour now.

“For me, I’m playing with the best in the world. To be in contention with all of these guys and compete on the same level, it’s going to be a real test. I’ll get a lot out of performing well in that arena.”

Looking forward to this week's event on the @asiantourgolf . There is plenty of Aussie Talent on show and a fantastic Course which is in superb condition. Will be playing with My Olympic team mate @Marcusfraser this week 7.20 10th tee. Gr8 game with @mattjonesgolf today. #GolfLife pic.twitter.com/4ZEqcKGbdh — Scott Hend (@hendygolf) February 7, 2023

It is another jam-packed week for Aussies abroad with 12 to contest the Asian Tour’s International Series Oman and Anthony Quayle, Aaron Pike, Louis Dobbelaar and Dimi Papadatos taking the opportunity to join Blake Windred at the Singapore Classic on the DP World Tour.

On the back of consecutive top-three finishes in Dubai and Saudi Arabia Lucas Herbert returns to the PGA TOUR for the first time in 2023 to tee it up at the $US20 million WM Phoenix Open.

It is the 27-year-old’s second visit to TPC Scottsdale having missed the cut last year.

Morocco Champions Winners and History

Morocco Champions Winners and History

A PGA TOUR Champions event, the Morocco Champions was first held in 2020. It is the first (and thus far only) PGA TOUR sanctioned stroke play event on the continent of Africa.

Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the 2021 event, scheduled for January 30 through February 1 has been cancelled. The next playing will be 2022.

As with most PGA TOUR Champions events, The Morocco Champions is a three round competition.

Morocco Champions is played at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Samanah Golf Club, which is located just fifteen minutes from downtown Marrakech, in the shadow of the Atlas Mountains.

The Morocco Champions tournament was brought to Morocco by the Association Trophee Hassan II, and is chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid.

The Association’s — and the government’s — goal is to draw attention to Morocco as a world-class golf destination. At this point, Morocco, which is about the size of California, has fifty golf courses. There are fourteen in the Marrakech area alone.

Association Trophee Hassan II also manages the European Tour’s Hassan II Golf Trophy and the Ladies European Tour’s Lalla Meryem Cup, both of which are held at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam (I have played there. You can see my Royal Golf Dar Es Salam review at the link.)

The GolfBlogger visited Morocco to play golf and take in the amazing culture back in 2016. You can read about my Morocco golf trip at the link. Morocco is a phenomenal place to visit. I would go back in a heartbeat.

An historical note or two:

The Kingdom of Morocco recognized US Independence on December 20, 1777 while the Revolutionary War still was in doubt. The Kingdom of France had recognized the US just three days earlier.

However, the Kingdom of France no longer exists, having disappeared in the horrors of French Revolution a few years later. On the other hand, the Alaouite dynasty still rules Morocco.

So, in a sense, that makes Morocco the United States’ oldest friend. A Treaty of Friendship was signed with Morocco in 1786 and ratified in 1787. The treaty, which was renegotiated in 1836, is still in effect, making it the longest unbroken treaty in US history. In 1821, the Sultan gave a building in Tangier to the United States for its embassy as a gift. That building now is a museum and is the only US National Historic Landmark located outside the United States.

But enough of the history lesson.

A list of Morocco Champions Winners follows.

Who won the Masters in 2023? Jon Rahm became champion before LIV Golf defection

pga tour champions morocco 2023

Only three golfers have won back-to-back Masters tournaments at Augusta: Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, and Tiger Woods. Jon Rahm is hoping to become the fourth.

The 2023 Masters winner will be in the field in 2024 as he looks to do something that hasn't been done since 2002, when a Tiger Woods in the midst of his first prime won golf's first major of the season for the second time in a row. Rahm, who shot a 12-under 276 for the weekend, beat out Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka (8-under 280) for his first green jacket.

This year, it won't get any easier. Rahm will find himself up against Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, and many more of golf's best as he looks for his third career major win.

Rahm, who went on to join LIV Golf later in 2023 despite previously pledging himself to the PGA Tour, is suspended from the PGA Tour for his defection to the controversial league. However, he is able to play at Augusta thanks to The Masters' eligibility rules.

Here's what to know about the defending champion at Augusta.

Who won the Masters in 2023?

Spanish golfer Jon Rahm is the defending Masters champion, making him the second non-USA-born golfer in three years to don the green jacket (2021 winner Hideki Matsuyama was born in Ehime prefecture in Japan).

Rahm held off LIV golfers Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson to win his first Masters, capping off an utterly torrid start to his season. Koepka entered the final round with the lead while Mickelson came in 10 strokes off pace, putting Rahm in the Goldilocks position to pull off a Sunday victory.

He shot 3-under 69 in the final round whereas Koepka shot 3-over 75, giving Rahm a four-stroke victory. Mickelson, meanwhile, shot 7-under 65 on Sunday to work his way into a tie for second on the leaderboard.

“Hard to put it into words," Rahm said after his win, per Golf Digest . "Obviously we all dream of things like this as players, and you try to visualize what it's going to be like and what it's going to feel like. And when I hit that third shot on the green [at the 18th], and I could tell it was close by the crowd's reaction, just the wave of emotion of so many things just overtook me. Never thought I was going to cry by winning a golf tournament, but I got very close on that 18th hole."

Jon Rahm's Masters scorecard in 2023

Rahm had a phenomenal first two days at Augusta before a lackluster third round threatened his position atop the leaderboard.

After entering the final day two strokes back of leader Brooks Koepka, Koepka's struggles on Sunday opened the door for Rahm, who ultimately won the day and the tournament. Par at Augusta National is 72 for the day, and 288 for the weekend.

  • Round 1: 7-under 65
  • Round 2: 3-under 69
  • Round 3: 1-over 73
  • Round 4: 3-under 69
  • Total: 12-under 276

Is Jon Rahm playing in 2024 Masters?

Despite not playing on PGA Tour, Rahm will be participating in the 2024 Masters.

Rahm defected to LIV Golf in December 2023, which led to his immediate suspension from PGA Tour events. The Masters, however, operates as an independent body, and has its own suite of rules for eligibility. One of those rules is automatic tournament participation for life thanks to his 2023 victory.

Rahm isn't the only golfer from LIV who is eligible. Other LIV golfers who will be in field include Koepka, Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Smith, and Mickelson, among others.

Why did Jon Rahm join LIV Golf?

Rahm, who decried LIV Golf upon the breakout league's inception, joined the Saudi-backed league on Dec. 7, 2023.

"To be honest, part of the (LIV) format is not really appealing to me," Rahm said in 2022, per NBC Sports . "Shotgun three days to me is not a golf tournament, no cut. It’s that simple. I want to play against the best in the world in a format that’s been going on for hundreds of years. That’s what I want to see."

Upon joining LIV, Rahm has performed an about-face.

“I’d say there was two instances," Rahm said of his change of heart on GOLF.com's "Breakthrough." "I think dynamics started to change and there was a lot of division at that time. And yes, for me to want to change, there had to be reasons beyond the money, right? So when I said that I fully meant it and it was true. Now, when they slap you with a large amount of money in your face, your feelings do change. I try not to be a materialistic person, but I do owe it to my family as well to set them up for success the best I can, and having kids I think changed that quite a bit. So the money is a part of it; I’m not going to lie. But again, when I said that I wasn’t fully aware of what I was saying because you don’t really understand.”

In summation, the move largely came down to money.

Jon Rahm Masters menu

One of the revered traditions of the Masters is the Champion's Dinner, in which winners of the famed event gather to eat a menu curated by the previous year's victor.

Rahm's Champions Dinner menu was released in March, and it pays homage to his home country of Spain. Options on the menu include, per Golf.com:

Truly a dinner befitting a champion.
