All you need to know about Religious Travel

What should i wear when visiting a religious place.

Every religion has different requirements on what to wear when visiting a sacred site, so it's always best to ask your travel guide about the appropriate dress. However, a good general rule is to always dress modestly. Both men and women should wear long skirts or trousers covering the knees and tops covering the shoulders and chest. Some Islamic and Jewish religious sites, such as mosques, will require you to cover your hair, while Buddhist temples require you to take off your shoes.

What is the best time to visit the Holy Land?

Israel, also known as the Holy Land, is at its best in spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October) when the temperatures are pleasantly warm, averaging around 26°C. Summer (June to August) heats up to an average of 32°C during the day, perfect for hitting the beach in Tel Aviv. The winter months (November to March) are cold and rainy, averaging around 15°C, and Jerusalem even sees occasional snowfall.

What is the most visited religious place in the world?

The Hindu Venkateswara Temple in India is said to be the most-visited religious place in the world, with around 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims visiting the temple every day. The renowned Sensoji Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo, is another big contender, with around 30 million visitors every year.

Why is religious tourism important?

Religious tourism is one of the oldest and most special forms of travel, as pilgrims have travelled to pay homage to sacred places and icons for millennia. Religious tourism is now more important than ever as it helps to protect and conserve ancient holy sites, cultural treasures and spiritual traditions.

Why Choose Us ?

Pilgrimage Tours’ president has been in the pilgrimage business since 1997 and has carefully studied the characteristics of many of the companies who provide the same services that we do. That’s why you need to read the…

Five things that you must know before you select a tour operator.

Some of the ugliest surprises that pilgrims get are hidden costs. It can be painful, to say the least, to find fees and taxes that no one ever mentioned add up to hundreds of dollars. Our price is always All-Inclusive. This means there is no additional surprise billing of your pilgrims for items such as airport taxes and gratuities. Pilgrimage Tours includes these expenses in its price. Ask about our no-guesswork, no-hassle tipping policy. Your tour price also includes first class hotels, deluxe motor coach with experienced driver and tour director, breakfast buffet and dinner daily, all admission/entrance fees, daily scheduling of Mass and much more.

Some tour operators set up trips that are next to impossible. We listen to our pastors and pilgrims who tell us about past pilgrimages they’ve taken. We’ve heard about elderly folks who had to hand carry luggage on cobblestone streets in Europe or for unreasonable distances through massive train stations. Sometimes, they simply couldn’t do it and others had to shuttle back and forth helping them in a race to not miss the next train. They tell us nightmare scenarios of 12 or more hour days, and then getting up the very next morning at 5:00 AM in order to make the next brutal day work. Oh yes, itineraries like that look amazing in a brochure, but I doubt that you’d want to be the traveler who endures a tour from you know where , would you? Our itineraries are tested.  Impossible days don’t happen.  We dumped grueling itineraries years ago and we’ll warn overzealous tour hosts if a custom itinerary is, let’s say, a bit too ambitious.  At the same time, we will give you everything that makes a pilgrimage great.  Just check out our tours.  You’ll be thrilled with what you see.

Have you tried to reach a real person at a pilgrimage tour operator, and even though you needed to leave a message, no one returned your call for days?  How would you feel if you called with a problem or question and no one EVER returned your call?  It happens! Pilgrimage Tours personalized customer service takes the pressure off your shoulders with its expertise and knowledgeable staff that is always available to answer your questions. When your people call, they reach a live person and not a voice mail system with its endless loops and maze of directories, guaranteed.  If you have to leave a message, we call back. We’re dedicated to serving our pilgrims.

There are literally hundreds of companies offering pilgrimage tours as part of their business.  Of the many pilgrimage tour operators, you will find a significant number who either: 1) Are not catholic owned and operated 2) Have pilgrimages as a sideline business 3) Have little background and are not truly knowledgeable about pilgrimages Pilgrimage Tours is a dedicated pilgrimage company.  We do no other type of business whatsoever and have been in the pilgrimage business since 1997.  We are 100% catholic owned and operated.  If you’re a pastor leading a pilgrimage, wouldn’t you like to tell your parishioners these things about your tour operator?

How many times have we had pilgrims or pastors come to us wanting a tour that will go because they worked with a tour operator who cancelled them?  We don’t keep count, but it happens all too often in this travel niche. Other so-called pilgrimage companies plan many tours over many dates, attempting to sell into those tours from far and wide. Many times these tours get cancelled due to low registration totals and a lack of support.  Pilgrims are left disappointed, inconvenienced and sit waiting on refunds for months on end. Pilgrimage Tours  does not cancel tours. Our groups go!! Our tours are hosted by a member of the clergy who is actively building a group organized within a religious community. This method has always proven to be successful.

Pilgrimage Tours is 100% Catholic owned! Integrity, Quality, Spirituality.

Join a Catholic Pilgrimage

pilgrim tour operators

As one of the largest and most experienced Catholic tour operators in the world, we have two primary ways in which individuals can join a Catholic Pilgrimage or Italian Cultural Heritage tour. In many cases, pilgrimages are sponsored by the priest of a parish or by parish groups in a city and all of the travelers will belong to the specific parish or parishes involved. However, some tours openly welcome other members to join their group.

What to Expect on a Unitours Pilgrimage

Whether you plan on attending a pilgrimage organized by your parish or joining another group’s tour, you can learn more by watching the following videos.

“Everything is worked out and I was able to go and it was a delightful trip.” The faithful have always felt a need to travel to the places that are holy to them, to see the sites, to touch the stones, to smell the smells, to pray the prayers, to visit the places and events which have helped formed the faith we hold as sacred. For over 50 years Unitours has provided Catholics with the quality prices and the spiritual dimension they have always deserved. “With Unitours it is so detailed that I didn’t have to worry about anything, except the pilgrims and what’s happening with them.” Whether you are seeking to answer faith or academic questions to grow deeper in your faith, to do penance or to pray with other Catholics, Unitours has created the perfect pilgrimage to help make the scriptures and church traditions come alive for you. We make all the arrangements, round trip areas arranged from your home city, we choose centrally located quality hotels that will fit your budget. Unitours provides fully escorted travel in deluxe air conditioned motor coaches, for one low price, Unitours provides you with a journey you will never forget. “A lot of them did not know each other, but by the time we finished the pilgrimage, they were like family, you know they were church, we have been praying together, we’ve been laughing together, crying together, we’ve been having supper together, breakfast together, looking out for one another, helping one another, some of the younger ones would help the older ones and it just becomes so cohesive group, it is really a church happening.” Take advantage of Unitours organized group pilgrimages designed specifically for the catholic pilgrim, including a knowledgeable local guide, a gifted catholic priest spiritual leader, daily liturgy and visits to significant sites, with all the amenities modern American travelers have come to expect. For over 50 years Unitours has arranged pilgrimages that fit a group spiritual and temporal needs as well as their budget. We offer the destination and tours you want including the holy land, Jordan, Egypt, Italy, Fatima, Lourdes and many more. “Even when I visit and I have visited Italy 6 to 7 times, it’s never the same experience, because I think the people around us make a difference and there are things that we can pick up, that we may have missed before, there is just so much that we can take in.” To learn more about any of our programs, go to our pilgrim traveler’s website and search for the pilgrimage destination and dates that will work for you or call us at 1-800-777-7432 or visit Unitours.com.

“Hi I am Bob Faucett, vice president of Unitours. We are so delighted that you are considering joining us and one of our Catholic Pilgrimages to Europe and the Middle East. Back in 1977, when I made my own first pilgrimage, I had a myriad of questions about the company, about what to expect, those types of things. We’ve made this video in the hopes that we can answer some of the same questions that you might have about Europe. First let me tell you a little bit about Unitours. We’re established in 1957, we are specialist in international group travel. We are not conventional travel agent; all we do is specialize groups overseas and our bread and butter what we do most is Catholic Pilgrimages . We are members of ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents), we are members of the local Better Business Bureau in Westchester County in New York, where head quarters is located. We are founding members of United States Tour Operators Association and we are still affiliate members today. The focus on Unitours type of services, we provide a high quality tour, we don’t like the idea of bargain basement kinds of tour, it’s just not the type of thing we do, our word & our reputation have made us so well known in the business, our attention to detail, we like to cross every T and dot every I, we have a great system put together to make sure that we communicate with everybody involved in the pilgrimage and we do that extremely well. We would like to run balanced itineraries, meaning itineraries that have a balance of the spiritual as well as the secular sites. When you are in a city like Paris or Rome, surely we want to see the spiritual site associated, but you also want to see the secular sites the Eiffel tower or the Coliseum or places like that as well, so we may try to have balance itineraries, we just try to have fun on pilgrimages as well, we think that the pilgrimages can be run on a balance basis. We have professional knowledgeable tour managers. These are people who escort your group, they meet you at the airport, they travel with you every day, they sleep in the same hotel as you at night, they take care of your group and they take you back to the airport at the end, these are people I can almost guarantee that you going to fall in love with after your 10 days or 15 days with them, they are wonderful, wonderful people that have worked with us for years." We have a professional knowledgeable staff at our headquarters in Port Chester, New York, people who attend to the invoicing and to itineraries and can answer any questions that you might have as well. Why do people go on pilgrimages? Ton of reasons that people go on various pilgrimages, but I think that main thing that people go on is to build their own faith, it’s a faith journey and they want to make a pilgrimage to build it on their own faith, they might go on a pilgrimage to study scriptures, certainly if you are going to the holy land, it is the best place in the world to study scriptures, because the scriptures just come live over there, but you might want to study some church history, some of the background of saints that have gone before us and who are important in our faith journey as well, so that’s another reason that we go on. Some people go on pilgrimages for healing, it might be a spiritual healing, it might be a physical healing, one of the beauties of being in the business that we are in is that we have seen many, many healing take place at various sites that we take pilgrimage throughout the year. A Lot of our organizers are priest who run pilgrimages, they go with the idea of helping to build community. It is one of the things I love to say, love to see is that when a pilgrimage takes place, church happens. You experience a faith experience that you share with other people who are travelling with you and it’s just organic, it just happens. You make new friends, you might also go to safely see the world with people that you know, you love, you respect and you feel safe travelling with. What do you expect on a Unitours pilgrimage? On a Unitours pilgrimage you can expect that you are going to travel in schedule air, you’re not going to be on charter flights or any that kind of thing, we use carriers that know us, that we know as well. You’re going to have quality centrally located hotels, these are places that will meet American standards, places that we know, that we have travel to, that we have sent other pilgrims to and that we are comfortable sending American travelers to them as well. You are going to have that tour manager as I mentioned before who is going to live with your group and escort your group be on the bus every single day with you, you’re going to have modern air conditioned motor coaches that will be available everyday that you’ll travel on. You’re going to have local guides in some cities and countries, especially in Europe, we engage local guides who come on, who are experts in their particular cities, this is certainly true in some of the larger cities. These local guides also know us and we know them and they travel with Unitours Catholic Pilgrimages group as well, these are people who are also available, they are included as well. You are going to have a buffet breakfast at your hotel every day; usually you’re going to have a hot component with it as well. Mostly your dinners are going to be included that are dinner at your hotels. Look at your brochure it makes it crystal clear, whether your meals each day are included or whether they are on your own, we like to have this clear, but mostly of your dinners are going to be included at your hotel in the evening. Most of our groups have mass scheduled each day and we schedule a private mass so that the priest who is the spiritual leader of your group will be the celebrant to share that mass with you and your fellow pilgrims and we make all those arrangement to make sure that you’re there as well. What are the cost elements that go into the pilgrimage, how does it work? One thing, the price of your tour is going to include your air fare, usually from your home city you need to look at the brochure to see exactly where that tour originates, the air is included, the hotels are included, as I mentioned before, your meals that are specified on the brochure, they are included as well, the motor coach, the entrance fees that to get in, we don’t have you having to pay to get in to the various sites, that all will be taken care for you and usually you get on a faster basis, because we have a group reservation in many of the places. One of the elements that may or may not be included in the price of your tour is the ever changing air taxes and fuel surcharges that airlines are imposing today, on some tours our host would have us include them in the price, other ones they exclude them and they would be added to your final bill, the brochure would make it crystal clear whether that’s included in your price or not. It is also a moving target according to the price of oil and whether the fuel surcharges goes up and down, that’s a moving target. What is not included as well is usually tips to the tour managers, the guides, the step on guides, the drivers, the bus driver, your dining room staff, those are not included, but typically we are going to invoice those for you and we will give those funds to your tour leaders who will disperse them as you travel, so that you not having to pass the hat and dig into your pocket every time somebody steps onto your bus or not. The one thing that is optional is your travel insurance, it’s up to you whether you buy that or not, we will add it to the invoice, of your final invoice, but it’s up to you, you can either accept it and pay that invoice or you can just cross it off, the invoice and pay the lesser amount, it’s totally up to you and its optional. People also often ask about the physical elements of the pilgrimages. Probably the most common questions we get is, how much walking is involved. The answer is, yes there is walking, we are delighted that some of the shrines are at places where we can drive the motor coach up to the front door, you get off the coach and your are instantly into the shrine and that’s a nice experience. But that’s not always the case, sometimes the shrine is a bit of aways from where we are allowed to park, this is happening in some of the European cities, where they are trying to eliminate some of the congestion around some of the sites, I’m thinking particularly of St. Peters, now we can take you to St. Peters, but we have to drop you off about 3 quarters of a mile at a bus parking lot in order for you to hike the rest of the way to St. Peters. Now if you have a walking problem, your tour manager might suggest to you, listen why not a couple of you share a cab, go down to St. Peters and then meet us when we arrive, it’s up to you, but we will try to work with you. There may be some sites that you don’t see that are simply too strenuous, but our tour manager will try to know your abilities and might make a recommendations to you, so we’re sensitive to it, but you should be mindful that if you have a disability, it could be an issue. One of the things is that we get questions is about wheel chairs, wheel chaired bound people are more than welcome on our trip. We have two rules for it, one is that you bring your own foldable wheel chair, bring it on the trip, because it is difficult to rent them, if you are going to from country to country, it is difficult to rent them period. So bring your own wheel chair and other thing we insist on is that you bring a companion who is going to be responsible for your care while you travel, that person needs to be someone who is going to push your wheel chair when you are touring and also who is going to take your wheel chair and put it underneath the coach and take it out from underneath the coach. It’s simply in the matter that the tour manager and the driver might be looking after up to50 other people; they don’t have the ability to give you the attention that you’re going to need. So those who are wheelchair bound you do need to bring a companion who is going to take care of you. We hope that this information has been helpful to you. We hope it answers many of your questions, we’re sure you don’t. If there are other questions you might have, you are invited to ask your host, if you are looking at a particular pilgrimage ask your tour host, whoever is running that tour, if there’s a travel agent involved ask the travel agent, we try to answer as many questions as we can. You need to call our offices at Port Chester, New York at the number on the screen right now. You are welcome to do that, our staff would be happy to answer your other questions. If you are looking for a pilgrimage and you are not sure about which pilgrimage you’re going to go on, you can go to the website of Unitours which you get it on the screen over here, go there and go to the section for individual travelers and then click on search and you’ll be able to see the pilgrimages that we have, that are upcoming, that have invited other people to join and you might be able to join that pilgrimage as well. We thank you for watching, we hope this was helpful to you and we hope that whenever you make your next pilgrimage that will be the tremendous experience for you and be a life changing one for you as well. Thank you for watching.

Frequently Ask Questions

Pilgrimages from outside our parish: our parish priest(s) do not lead or offer pilgrimages so do you offer “open” or “public” pilgrimages that we can join.

Since we have a pilgrimage group leaving for somewhere almost daily, we are sure you can find a pilgrimage that is scheduled to the destination you are interested in. The best way to facilitate this is to visit the link below and search for both the destinations you are seeking, as well as the convenient departure locations across the US. https://unitours.com/travel_catholic.aspx

Wheelchairs: I am wheelchair bound. Can I still go on a pilgrimage?

Everyone is welcome on a Unitours pilgrimage! You must bring your own wheelchair since renting them in your destination country is not as easy and convenient as it is in the US and hotels do not have wheelchairs to “borrow” outside of their facility. We insist that you travel with a companion who you trust can push your chair and assist in getting you on and off the motor coach, as well as navigating the venues you will be visiting. Since Europe and the middle east do not have legislation like ADA, there may be venues that are simply not wheelchair accessible so your Tour Manager will advise when that is the case, and you will be advised if there are options available at that particular venue.

Clothing: I know we are visiting many churches and shrines while on pilgrimage, so what kind of clothing is appropriate?

Daytime attire is casual and comfortable. Wear clothing that can be layered so that you can adjust throughout the day. Sneakers or comfortable soft-sole walking shoes are highly recommended as well. No shorts above the knee, sleeveless shirts, spaghetti strap tops or revealing clothing will be permitted when visiting most of the religious sites. We suggest ladies carry a scarf to throw over their shoulders if they are wearing sleeveless tops. Evening attire is casual if there are any activities planned after dinner.

Weather: What kind of weather can I expect on my pilgrimage?

You may visit www.weather.com for information on specific cities being visited while on your pilgrimage. However, weather is as unpredictable internationally as in the US, so it is best to dress in layers that can be adjusted as the temperature lowers or rises. Plan to carry a small bag or backpack for that extra jacket, windbreaker, or sweater, as well as a bottle of water to stay hydrated. See additional information under Clothing .

Travelers Insurance: Do I really need travelers’ insurance? What does it cover?

Travelers insurance is an option to consider. We do highly recommend its purchase, as it provides peace of mind, that should a problem arise, your investment in your tour is protected. Insurance helps alleviate that uncertainty by planning for those uncertainties if they were ever to materialize. Please feel free to visit https://atc.tripassure.com/main/?welcome=UNIT0010NY%241 for a listing of the cost and benefits of travelers insurance.

Medication: I take prescription medication, what is the best way to travel with it?

You should travel with your medication in your carry-on. You should also bring the prescription orders, with copies in your checked baggage in case you need to refill while abroad.

Passport Safety: What is the safest way to travel with my passport?

We recommend you make a photocopy of your passport and carry it with you, storing it separately from the original and taking a picture of the Information Section with your photo and saving that on your mobile phone as well. Note that your passport must be valid at least six months after the last day of your trip or you will not be permitted to board your initial flight.

Foreign Currency: What is the local currency of the country I am visiting and how much should I bring with me while on pilgrimage?

In your final travel documents, the currency of the country or countries you are visiting will be clearly stated. It is best to avoid bringing large sums of cash, so we suggest bringing a major credit card and/or ATM/Debit card. ATM machines are found in all major international cities in today’s global economy. Have available customer service numbers for all credit card/debit cards you are taking with you, written down ahead of time. NOTE: Cash advances on credit cards require a PIN code. Set up the codes with customer service of your debit card provider prior to travel as well. It is best to let your bank and credit card companies know when you are traveling abroad and inquire about any international fees that may be applied.

Also worth noting:

Traveler checks are NOT recommended as they are not easily exchanged, and it is never recommended revealing substantial amounts of money when making purchases overseas. Lastly, we recommend not packing any valuables in your checked luggage, in the event it is misrouted or damaged in transit.

Airline Accommodations: What kind of flight arrangements can I expect, and do I have the option to upgrade my seat or use airline miles I have accumulated over the years?

We use only reputable, quality international airlines, and convenient flight schedules as possible from the departure city. Our staff will work with you on any seat upgrades you may inquire about, and they will also try to assist in deviations from the planned flight schedule.

Traveling with electronics: Are there special rules regarding traveling with electronic devices?

Yes, it is important to note that all powerless devices will not be permitted onboard the aircraft in your carry-on. Therefore, make sure all your electronics; cell phones, laptops, tablets, music players and any other electronics you travel with are fully charged ahead of time if you intend to carry them onboard. You will need to carry with you an electrical converter to charge your devices as below, to charge your devices abroad.

Electrical Appliances: Can I use a hair dryer or curling iron on pilgrimage?

Yes, however, most hotels have hair dryers available It is important to note that the voltage is 220 volts AC in Europe and the middle East, making adapters or converters necessary for electrical items meant to work on 110 volts. Small kits are usually available at local drug stores or on-line.

Phone use out of the US: How hard is it to use my mobile phone outside of the US?

Most major U.S. cell phone carriers offer you the option of choosing a plan that allows you to make international calls while travelling abroad. Make those arrangements prior to your departure to avoid communication issues or excessive international roaming charges which may be applied if you use your phone without an international calling plan.

Hotel Accommodations: What class of hotel can I expect on my pilgrimage?

We typically use clean high-quality, 4-star hotels, centrally located to the sites we will visit and that our local planners are familiar with and have visited. A few religious destinations do not have 4-star hotels and in this case, we use the best three-star hotels available.

Meals: What kind of Breakfast and Dinner can I expect and how are lunches normally managed?

If possible, the hotels provide American style breakfast with both hot and cold options, usually buffet style. Dinner is managed the same way, with dinner menus that offer you options, or at a preselected quality restaurant nearby. Lunches are typically taken along the route and are paid out of pocket by each pilgrim as it has been our experience that most will eat lighter during the day and do not want to waste time sitting down at lunchtime for a big meal.

The Itinerary: Will we only be visiting churches and shrines the whole time or will we also get to see the local cultural sites as well?

We pride ourselves on our ability to blend the spiritual with the cultural on all our pilgrimages. In some areas, we even include a visit to a winery, brewery or specialty shop if requested by your host.

Tour Manager: Will there be someone from Unitours with our group while we are traveling outside the US, or will we have to rely on local guides at each stop?

We provide a Tour Manager on all our standard pilgrimages. This person greets you at the airport after you claim your luggage and will be with you every step of the way throughout your pilgrimage journey. They stay at the same hotels, and ensure you are well cared for. In addition, you will enjoy certified local guides for sightseeing in many cities.

Coach bus amenities: Will our tour bus have air conditioning, WiFi, and ports to charge our phones? Do they have toilets onboard?

We use only top-quality modern coach buses so you can expect W-Fi on them as well as air conditioning. Some may offer a small restroom, but your driver and Tour Manager will remind you of good clean restroom facilities at each stop and the bus will stop at intervals during any longer routes when possible.

Entrance Fees: Do any of the places we visit charge a fee to enter, and what can we expect to pay?

We prearrange the entire itinerary, including the stops which require an entry fee and that is taken care of ahead of your visit so that you do not have to worry. Your Tour Manager will already be familiar with those venues and will have made those arrangements.

Tips: How much should I plan to bring to cover the tips I can expect on my pilgrimage?

Thankfully, we take care of that ahead of time so that you can relax and enjoy your pilgrimage. We clearly state the expected tip amount for the itinerary we have planned and pre-collect that ahead of your departure. It is calculated on the local tip rates and is all inclusive, with the Tour Manager and coach bus driver as well.

Public Restrooms : Should I expect to pay to use public restrooms on my pilgrimage?

Most countries in Europe and the Middle-East (Mexico included) charge a small free to use the public restrooms. It is usually a very small cost (less than 25 cents US) but is the norm in these areas.

Walking : Is there a lot of walking and if so, do I have the option to not participate in all the activities?

Yes, a pilgrimage involves walking from wherever the bus is allowed to drop the group off to the venue. Once at the venue, the Tour Manager will typically guide you through the buildings and adjacent areas so there is a reasonable amount of walking at each venue. The Tour Manager will describe the amount and effort to be expected and in most cases, if there are some who can not physically participate, they will be allowed to relax nearby or in the motor coach.

Kokoda Track in 'worst condition' in more than 30 years amid falling tourist numbers

A view of mountains under clouds, with bananas trees and other green vegetation in front.

Charlie Lynn led trekkers across the rugged Kokoda Track for three decades — guiding Australians as they paid tribute to soldiers who fought and died there in World War II.

But after his 101st trip last year, he decided enough was enough.

The mountainous 96-kilometre trail — a place of pilgrimage for tourists commemorating one of Australia's pivotal military victories — has fallen too far into disrepair, according to Mr Lynn.

"It's in the worst condition it's ever been in, in the 32 years that I've trekked across it," he said.

He described parts around Brown River, far inland on the track, as "death traps".

"You would hardly call it a track. It's about 10 metres above the river and if anybody has a misstep with their pack on … you will never find them again," he said.

Mr Lynn, the son of a WWII veteran, led one of the first Australian tourist groups across the famous track on the 50th anniversary of the battle in 1992.

A group of people climb a small hill in a line, under banana trees.

Since then, it's become an important source of income for villagers along the trail, bringing in 50 million kina ($20.4 million) annually to PNG's economy.

But amid a decline in visitor numbers and concerns about the management of the Kokoda Track, PNG's tourism authority is seeking oversight of the agency tasked with managing tourist operations on the trail.

Trail has become 'the wild west'

The Battle of Kokoda is among the most celebrated Australian victories of WWII, when Australian soldiers and Papua New Guinean villagers repelled the Japanese advance on Port Moresby along the mountain trail.

It forged an enduring bond between Australia and Papua New Guinea, which is now symbolised by the track — something that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will mark as he walks part of it on Anzac Day after arriving in PNG on Monday.

You few an illustrated map of the Kokoda trail from Port Moresby in south-eastern Papua New Guinea.

At its tourism peak in 2008, about 5,600 trekkers crossed the Kokoda Track.

Since then, Mr Lynn says, numbers have dropped 46 per cent, and some believe the trail is not fulfilling its tourism potential.

Mr Lynn said the experience for tourists had suffered as management of the trail had declined.

"There's not one decent toilet across the trail for them," he said.

"What you'll have is two or three groups of 50-60 arriving at a campsite that only has capacity for 25 and they'll be having heated arguments for who stays there that night.

"It's become the wild west."

Another trekking operator, Mick O'Malley, isn't as critical and says he has seen improvements.

"We are head and shoulders above where we used to be when I first started trekking," he said.

"I agree … it would be great to have amazing toilets but, by the same token, toilets in Australia aren't run by the government. It's private enterprise.

"It's not the government's responsibility to make sure toilets and guest houses are clean and up to standard."

Researchers Kyline Koroka and Shahar Shalom Yadin, who published a paper on the Kokoda Track in the Journal of South Pacific Law, are calling for authorities and tourism operators to consult more with local communities that host the trail.

A 'semitrailer in a sedan car park'

The Kokoda Track Authority (KTA), established about 20 years ago, oversees tourism operations on the trail and sits under PNG's Department of Provincial and Local-level Government Affairs (DPLGA).

However, deputy chairman of the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority, Andy Abel, said it was put in the hands of the wrong department.

"It should have been parked within the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority because Kokoda Trail trekking … is a tourism asset," he said.

"It's like parking a semitrailer in a sedan car park.

"When I realised how the tourism authority was spending millions of kina promoting the trail in Australia, but we had no control over it, I made it my business to correct it."

a black and white photograph of young men in uniform with rifles over their shoulders walking in the muddy rainforest

Mr Abel is spearheading a push to shift the management rights of the Kokoda Track Authority from the DPLGA to the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority.

He expects it to be approved within three months.

"I've met with the minister for tourism, I've met with the governor, I've met with the prime minister … so it's now just a matter of time, and not when, for that National Executive Council submission to go before cabinet and that transfer to take place."

The ABC approached the Kokoda Track Authority for comment.

KTA chief executive Julius Wargirai has previously defended the agency, saying it is working to improve transparency and grow the benefits of the track for local people.

He has also said the KTA had limited power to increase the benefits for people living on the track.

A group of trekkers arrive in a mountainous village, surrounded by trees.

In the meantime, there are plans to encourage more tourists back to PNG by funding improvements to the Kokoda Track and building more WWII attractions in Port Moresby.

Mr Abel and Port Moresby Governor Powes Parkop have signed a memorandum of understanding with Canada Bay Council in Sydney and not-for-profit organisation Network Kokoda to make the improvements.

Mr Parkop said under the plan, historic sites such as Paga Hill, Wardstrip and Sabama would undergo development for new memorials.

He said he would like memorial sites built in the Central and Oro provinces as well.

"The plan from our city is to also encourage tourism in the area of war pilgrimage," he said.

Mr Parkop said the National Capital District government (Port Moresby) would work with Network Kokoda and memorial designers to come up with ideas for installations.

One idea included placing WWII aircraft at Wards Airstrip, which was used by heavy bombers and transport planes during the conflict.

And Mr Parkop wants to extend the tourism market beyond Australia.

"There is a very big gap in the market," he said

"I think the potential for us to get more numbers here than Gallipoli is there, but the government hasn't really developed and harnessed this potential to create the facilities.

"And of course, the other market is the Japanese and USA. We want to invite them too so they can tell their story and their version of things, so they can pay respect to lost loved ones."

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
