Sindhudurg in Konkan

Sindhudurg is one of the least populated districts in Maharashtra. That makes it less crowded and a go-for lace for tourists. Back in the 16th century, India had faced continuous attracts from British and Portuguese. It was Great Maratha warrior Chatrapadhi Sivaji who selected this place for his fort to eliminate the enemies of European and Siddi conquerors. Since these areas lie in the coastal area you can find numerous forts around here. This Sindhudurg fort has around 52 bastions. It is so well made that it is almost impossible to locate the entrance for this fort by outsiders. There is a short boat ride that takes you to the fort every day. Ganpatipule beaches, temples, & forts.

Ganpatipule is a small coastal town 20 km north of Ratnagiri. With a name, pregnant with a legend, this is a small town that disconnects you from your mundane life and lets you soak in the abundant nature. You can choose between beaches, cliffs, dense foliage, and roads that pass through a thousand shades of greenery.

Panorama of Ganpatipule

Let me share what we enjoyed there:

Beaches @ Ganpatipule

If you are located on the Konkan coast, you can never be far from a beach.

Malgund Beach

Malgund Beach near Ganpatipule

We landed in Ganpatipule late evening after a long drive across the Konkan coast . Even then, the sound of sea waves did not allow us to stay indoors. We stepped out for a stroll on the beach. Here for the first time, I realized that each beach has its own language. Birds like Kingfishers flew around looking for food. Some fishing boats were resting on the beach. After Goa beaches, this beach looked deserted – of course, we were a bit away from the main town at Malgund.

It was when we were driving back from Jaigad Fort that we saw the lovely Malgund beach and the cliffs surrounding it.

Ganpatipule Beach

Ganpatipule beach - in front of Ganpati temple

The next day we had the opportunity to visit the town and see the small but crowded beach right in front of the Ganpati temple. It was like a commercial beach with street food stalls lining the beach, locals and tourists occupying all the benches, and with people playing with the sea waves. The beach is not too wide and on a high tide day, the waves would be very close to the temple walls.

Rivers heading to the sea

Rivers merging into the Arabian Sea with fishing boats

Here and there you meet small rivers and streams, full of water, heading toward the sea. In the morning we saw so many fishing boats parked on the banks of one such river. It was a lovely scene to soak, standing on the bridge over a river. Sea was visible on the horizon and the stream was full of boats merged with it. By the time we returned in the evening, the river had swollen and there was no sign of the banks we saw in the morning. The colorful boats added their glamor to the muddy rain waters.

Jaigad Fort

Jaigad Fort Entrance

Just about 15 km or so north of the town is one of the many forts of Shivaji in Maharashtra. Jaigad Fort is located on top of a cliff that gives a strategic view of the sea. Anyone approaching the land can be seen from quite some distance and I assume dealt with. Before I could stand and admire the unusual architecture of Jaigad Fort, I admired the perfect location. I also wondered about the potential threats that came from the sea route for which so many forts had to be built along the western coast of India.

Lone tree in compound of Jaigad Fort

Abandoned fort

Jaigad Fort is in an abandoned state of existence. There is a mandatory ASI board that warns against any damage to the fort, but it itself is in need of some protection. We entered the gate through a high gate passing through the chambers meant for gatekeepers. We landed on the ground surrounded by a fort wall. The size of this fort is not too big. Many big and small structures were scattered on the ground as ruins. The monsoons had left their yearly mark of moss.

Inside Jaigad Fort

A lonely tree stood there like a watchman keeping an eye. In the center, a well-like structure caught my eye. – not because it was any better, but because the colorful young leaves created an interesting pattern on its brown walls. A structure in the middle that might have been a palace or a storehouse was standing – as if to fall a bit each day.

Brown walls and Green leaves inside Jaigard Fort

We climbed the walls of the Jaigad fort using the steep slippery stairs. Walking carefully on the walls with raindrops falling on my head, I reached a bastion that was partially covered. The view from its open windows was breathtaking. The coast in front was a series of hills neatly placed into the sea.

Walls & Bastions of Jaigad Fort

Invisible fort

The bay-like formation kept the fort invisible to the seafarer but gives an unobstructed view of the sea from the bastions. At another angle, I could see the interplay of earth and water complemented by the clouds in the sky. Now, of course, there is a large industrial setup that you get to see from here. I only wish the place was maintained a bit for visitors to enjoy these vistas.

View from bastion of Jaigad Fort

A small Ganesha temple stands in the middle with a typical Maharashtrian-style Dweepstambh in front. The temple is the only living part of this fort that otherwise stands neglected. There was no security guard, no visitors and it sounded like one of those abandoned places where people meet away from prying eyes.

Temples in and around Ganpatipule

Ganpati is the leading deity of this region, though the temples dedicated to Shiva can also be seen.

Lambodara Temple, Ganpatipule

Lambodara Temple - Ganpatipule

This is the Ganesh temple that gives the town its name. Standing bang on the Ganpatipule beach this is a simple yet aesthetic temple. The Ganesha here is in the form of Lambodara – or the one with a big belly. You can only see his belly-shaped stone image, the rest of the body is hidden.

Side view of Ganpati temple at Ganpatipule

Pule means sand and since the Ganpati was found in the sand, the town got its name Ganpatipule. It is believed that there are 8 Ganpatis guarding the 8 directions. This Ganpati is guarding the western direction.

Modak - must eat dish of Ganpatipule

You must try the Modak that you get around the temple here.

Karhateshwara Temple, Nandiwade

Karhateshwara Temple near Jaigad Fort

This small temple dedicated to Shiva sits on a cliff where the waves come and hit hard. They strike the rocks on the edge, they sprinkle themselves on these rocks before returning to be a part of the sea. It is a phenomenon that you can sit and watch for hours.

Ancient Shiva temple - Karhateshwara

The temple structure indicates and the people there confirm that Karhateshwara temple is an ancient temple. It is a small one-room temple with a Shivalinga that is supposed to be Swayambhu. The story that the priest told us goes like this – the Shivalinga came to the shore as the waves would bring it here. The local fishermen would throw it back into the sea, but it would come back every time – sometime in the fishing net and sometimes with the waves. Finally, fishermen left it on the cliff and the local cows started visiting it and bathing it with their milk.

This is when the villagers got the message and they built the temple around the Shivalinga. Not a new story but you can always interpret it as the story of faith.

Deepstambh of Karhateshwara Temple

I was intrigued by the ancient-looking Deepstambha that stood almost like a lighthouse on the edge of a cliff. I wondered if all the lamps were lit, it can be the lighthouse for ships in the Arabian Sea.

Shri Jaya Vinayaka Mandir

Jaya Vinayaka Temple near Jaigad Fort

Jaya Vinayak is a new temple built by Jindal who runs a coal-based thermal power plant in the vicinity. This is a lovely temple. I almost felt like I am walking in some old temple during its heydays. Manicured lawns, ponds full of lotus flowers, and absolutely clean premises.

Jaya Vinayaka Temple

Dedicated to the popular deity of the region, Jaya Vinayaka temple has a large image of Ganesha and his vehicle rat in a standing position. The reliefs of the Shiva family are carved on the outer walls of the temple. The geometry of its design tells you the architect’s understanding of cosmic principles. It was a delight to walk around this temple. It would not be too much to say that I want all temples in India to have the same level of cleanliness and maintenance.

Lakshmi Keshav Temple, Kolisare

We drove to Kolisare and I could not see any temple. Our driver then pointed out a small temple hidden in the trees below. We could hear a stream passing by. We trekked down to the temple and were pleased to see a group of temples.

Ancient idol of Lakshmi Keshav

The Lakshmi Keshav has an ancient image in stone. For the first time in India, I saw a board outside the temple explaining the idol. It pointed out the four signs of Vishnu – Shankh or Conch, Chakra or Wheel, Gada or Mace, and Padam or flower. It pointed to the Lakshmi carved on one side of the main Vishnu idol giving the temple its name – Lakshmi-Keshav. On the other side is carved Bishnu’s Vahan or vehicle Garuda.

I spoke to the priest and he said the idol belongs to a temple in Kolhapur . During various attacks on Kolhapur, the idol was moved to its current location. In fact like most stories, the idol chose to be here next to this river. It has been here for the last 400 or so years as per the priest and the idol is way older than that.

Prachin Konkan Museum

Dioramas at Prachin Konkan Museum, Ganpatipule

From the time we started driving towards the town, we could see the huge boards promoting Prachin Konkan Museum. I was impressed, to say the least. Never in my life have I seen a museum, that too, a museum in such a small town being promoted so well. I had kept a couple of hours aside for the museum visit. We walked to the ticket counter. There was more to be impressed with when I was told that a guide would take us around the museum. The lady started by talking like a recorded machine, I understood she was probably doing this many times a day.

Barber being depicted at Prachin Konkan Museum, Ganpatipule

However, as we started walking around, disappointment started setting in. There were life-size dioramas showing the rural life of a Konkani village. We had seen something very similar at the Bigfoot Museum in Goa . I do not want to see badly made caricatures of professionals. I want to see real things, really old things.

In the end, there was a collection of seashells where another guide told a bit about shells with repeated warnings to not take pictures. There was nothing so spectacular that a picture would have done some damage. They did have a decent collection of shells to buy and we did pick up some.

Overall, the place was a pleasant surprise with a laid-back life and abundant nature.

Exploring a destination...

The joy of travel comes in exploring new things. Planting your feet somewhere you’ve never been before brings with it the rush of discovery and the joy of pushing back on the boundaries of your world.

But when one does arrive at that fresh frontier, there are ways better than others to begin your journey of discovery. Follow these steps and see the world with a new light.

• Discover a new city through a food tour. Food tour’s are the easiest way to take a tour, learn about the local delicacies, and the best of all, get great tips that aren’t just “local” tips for tourists, but sometimes, lessons for a lifetime too

• Use Public Transportation. When you are in a new city, you can possibly see places and people that you wouldn’t normally see when simply walking to the places that checks your list. Some buses or rails take you to parts of the city you wouldn’t get to see otherwise. Whilst using public transportation, just ensure that you are following the local norms and do remember to watch the locals!

• Find a local festival. Go beyond what other tourists might do while visiting a place. Look for the unique things you would want to do. Use social media or the local tourism website to find out what’s going on locally. You may have to move out of the center of the city to do some of the less popular but more unique things, so just keep that in mind!

5 Things To Know About Kunkeshwar Beach

Konkan Beaches / by Mrunal & Jiten / 1 Comment

Last Updated on October 5, 2021 by Mrunal & Jiten

Kunkeshwar Beach was recommended to me by my best friend who lives in Chennai. He is a frequent visitor of the Konkan coast during his weekends as his cousins live there.

He had visited the place before and asked me to try it out once. Since he had the guidance of the locals, he was able to give me the list of all the places I should explore in and near that particular Beach.

And, I followed the route judiciously so that I do not miss the small gems that are not covered by most Tourist operators.

  • Konkan is very popular with tourists across India and abroad.
  • Konkan is the place to be during holidays, what with nature bounties like green valleys; mostly calm sea; serene beaches, Sparkling springs, mountains; Coastal fruit  – Alphonso mangoes, Jackfruit, tender coconut.
  • Other attractions such as  amazing seafood; proximity to big cities like Mumbai, Goa; water sports – banana boat rides, surfing, scuba diving ; camping; temples; crowd-free environs and heritage tourism

A trip to Kunkeshwar will reflect all features of Konkan and more… One gets this feeling soon as we land in this area.

Why Kunkeshwar

Table of Contents

So, off I went with my wife and daughter to this amazing location on a long weekend.

My daughter liked the trip more than everybody else, especially watching the glowing surf in one of the nearby beaches and eating luscious mangoes!

More about glowing beaches later.

Why this beach you may ask when one can go anywhere in Konkan?

Because of most amazing beaches in and around the area, historical forts, and religious temples and more than you can cover 2 – 3 days.

It is an unexplored region; crowds are less and you can move around freely.

Kunkeshwar is a small Village ashore the Arabian Sea. It is just16kms away from the City of Devgad. Its name is derived from the name of Lord Shiva, to whom the local temple is dedicated.

The temple is crowded to the hilt during Shivratri. This temple was built by a sailor who was saved by a light on the shore here according to locals.

The beach, on whose shore the temple lies, is itself breathtaking. Our family was awe-struck at the beautiful sunset on day one of our trips. With no crowds whatsoever we had a major part of the beach for ourselves. We enjoyed having the snacks from the vendors selling seafood on the beach.

There are other places near this beach that endeared me and my family to this place. Check out what you can see when you are there…

Devgad fort

This fort is on top of a hill, just at the meeting point of the Arabian Sea and Devgad creek.  Though a small one, it is imposing – made of Blackstone with 3 Bastions. It was built by Kanoji Angre in 1705.

One can access this fort from Customs House at Devgad. Do fill your water bottles below to keep yourself hydrated at the top. And yes, due to its size, most people can explore the whole fort area easily.

Remember to visit the two temples built inside the temple. The Harbor is just below this fort. Get a bird’s eye view of it, the Devgad beach, Lighthouse, and windmills from the top.

Vijaydurg fort

For the record, this is the oldest fort in all of Konkan. Considered impregnable, it was built during the reign of Raja Bhoja II around 1193 – 1200. It was later fortified by the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

This massive impenetrable fort was previously called Gheria as it was surrounded by water on four sides. Now there is a trench road leading to the fort on one side.

It is said that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj personally hoisted his flag only in this fort and Torna Fort. The great ruler won it from Adil Shah and renamed the fort as Vijay Durg (fort of victory).

This fort is said to have held strong for Marathas in later years against attacks of the Portuguese and British.

A wall has been discovered on one side of the fort, lying submerged 3 meters underwater. It is assumed to have been built to break attacking enemy ships, adding to the safety of the fort.

Devgad beach

From Vijaydurg fort move to the placid Devgad beach for swimming and sunbathing.

This beach, lying between two small hills, is accessible for people coming from other locations via the Devgad bus stand.

Devgad harbor on this beach. Step into the lighthouse, located inside, to watch passing ships in the Arabian Sea.

Do not forget to buy the world-famous Alphonso mangoes here.

Tara Mumbai beach

Tara Mumbai beach is located near a small village just Kunkeshwar 4 km away.  People come here to admire the glorious sunset, White Sands, and blue azure waters.

One can catch glimpses of hardworking fishermen lunge their catch from their boats onto the beach.

The lucky visitors are rewarded with sightings for porpoises here.

The specialty of Tara beach is Phosphorescence. The special feature of the beach makes the Sea waves glow during the night. Adjust your trip to watch this nature miracle!

Shiva temple – Kunkeshwar temple

The ancient Kunkeshwar temple is located in the village of the same name, just beside the beach. It has been built around 1100 AD. This temple is also known as Kashi of South. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was as a frequent visitor to this famous temple.

Kunkeshwar Beach

Bridges, greenery and beautiful carvings lead to the main sanctum sanatorium.

There is also a cave on the eastern end of the temple with beautiful carvings of warriors.  One can pay reverence tools of Ganesh Shiva and Nandi here. The important festival celebrated here is Maha Shivaratri.

Vimleshwar Shiva temple

Do not miss this temple!  It is not usually included in every Tourist Itinerary but is worth your spending some time here.

Vimleshwar Shiva Temple is located between Vijaydurg and Devgad. It is an old cave temple with idols of Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha.

Built-in Laterite rock, the intricate architecture, on the inside and outside, is simply out of this world. There are also two huge Elephants figures that are said to guard the entrance.

The main idol of Vimaleshwar (a Shivling) is in the sanctum sanatorium. Not many enter the sanctum due to the presence of numerous bats and darkness surrounding the internal region of the cave.

Alongside this temple is a refreshing, everflowing stream.

These are some places in and near Kunkeshwar Beach to explore and admire!

Each place will be a new experience not unlike before, for this is Konkan Land a marvel of nature, claimed from the sea. Surprises abound; come and see for yourself!

How to reach…

Kunkeshwar beach is easily accessible from other parts of the country.

A new International Airport is coming up at Chipi. Traveling to Konkan is now possible for even foreign travelers.  From Chipi airport you need to just travel 48 km road to reach our destination.

Nearest major railway stations on Konkan Railway are:

  • Kankavli – 49 Kms away
