Trek to Ponmudi

A trek to ponmudi.

Peak Name - Ponmudi

Height - 3002 ft

Location - 61 kms from Trivandrum, Kerala

Hike level - Easy to Medium Uphill trek

Starting Point - Kallar

End Point - Ponmudi

Duration - 1 day trek

Best time to do Ponmudi: November to March

I went for a rain walk to this picturesque hill station on the occasion of World Environment Day and the trek was organized by the Kerala Forest Department in association with WWF India. Ponmudi is a hill-station located at a distance of 61 km from Trivandrum. Driving my bike all the way from Trivandrum along the route Nedumangad-Anad-Vithura to Kallar is not less than an adventure itself as the roads of the state are too narrow and I never had an experience of driving on these :)

I reached Kallar around 07.30 hrs and the walk was flagged off around 08.00 hrs. Kallar is named after the Kallar River and it is a famous bird watching spot. There are this famous Meenamutty waterfalls and it is said that there is a trek route via this river too. But as it is a difficult one and the Forest Dept officials were too concerned about our safety they took chose the road circuit. There were about 35 people from almost all the age groups, which is a good sign!

Ponmudi is situated at a height of about 3000 ft and the road from Kallar to Ponmudi comprises of 22 hairpin bends, perhaps one of the highest numbers when compared with the rest of the hill stations of Kerala. The foothills of Ponmudi are of rubber plantations while the uphills are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. The adjacent landscape is covered with a thick blanket of forests.

Though the first leg on the total distance of 15 km is a bit tiring because of the hot sun and humid climate, the breath-taking views of the cloud-kissed mountains, hills covered with lush green tea plantations, clean roads, and fresh air kept me walking towards our resting point which is the PWD guest house. We were provided some snacks and tea to refresh ourselves and continue with the rest of the trek.

Though this is a road trek mostly, I got ample chances to try some off-road routes too and they are worth trying. Some are just climbing the roadside steeps to cut off few hundred meters walk while few others are through the tea estates :) Nevertheless, they are good routes too and there is no harm in trying those as they are perfectly safe. There is a temple here dedicated to Sree Karuppaswamy who is a friend of Lord Ayyappa which is frequently visited by the locals.

The second leg of the trek was pretty fantastic as it started to drizzle and the climate suddenly changed making the uphill trek more easy for us. I reached our final destination - the KTDC Guest House which is located on top of the hill at about 13.00 hrs. Having had our lunch there, we gathered for experience sharing and came back to Kallar after walking the downhill for some time and later catching a KSRTC bus which dropped us at Kallar.

All this trek is worth as it gave me an exposure to the beauty of Western Ghats and got me close to some WWF India members. I would definitely recommend this trek for the beginners as this will give both the experiences of uphill and downhill treks as well as the on and off route hiking. A well spent weekend! ;-)

The enchanting road that leads to Ponmudi

 alt=

“Sometimes the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn’t mean to take.” – Angela N. Blount

Whenever we head to the state capital, a trip to Ponmudi is something we always look forward to. When the news came out that Ponmudi was once again open to the public after a pandemic break, we had already started making plans. We didn’t have to think twice when we heard that Amir’s PG Entrance test was going to be held at Thiruvananthapuram. This was destined. We only had Ponmudi in mind when we started the journey. If you thought driving all the way from Kozhikode to Thiruvanthapuram just to visit Ponmudi sounds high handed, maybe you should try a drive on the Ponmudi road during the wee hours of the morning. The sheer beauty of the landscape can take your breath away. Ponmudi we would say is highly addictive.

ponmudi bike trip

The best way to travel to Ponmudi is to take a KSTRC bus. There is a special joy in sitting by the window of the bus with a light drizzle caressing your face. The bus service starts at 5 am. Morning and evening also bus services are available. And it's also recommended to take a ride back home the same way too.

Ponmudi beckons travellers for a refreshing trip

Ponmudi - Kerala’s golden peak | Weekend destination from Thiruvananthapuram

Ponmudi - Kerala’s golden peak | Weekend destination from Thiruvananthapuram

Since we didn’t want to miss the morning sights, we took the first bus to Ponmudi. Thankfully we managed to get a window seat. And since our last trip got distracted by the rain, we remembered to carry an umbrella with us.

As the bus moved through the charming greenery, it was wonderful to spot a row of cyclists on the road. It’s always great to see the younger lot showing interest in such healthy activities. This cycle culture is also a great support for the environment. Raju Raphael had written that the rising fuel prices were the reason why people in Amsterdam resorted to cycles for commuting. In the current circumstances, one can’t rule out the possibility of our country taking that route.

The picturesque and pristine sights of village life was in full view during the ride—farmers plowing the fields, women sweeping the front yard, milkman readying with their daily quota of fresh milk, elderly people sipping tea from paper cups, people taking their cows for grazing, sleepy-eyed children peeping from the windows. Earlier during such travels, we used to come across many beautiful smiles on the way. It is often said that it’s a smile that helps to narrow the boundaries between two individuals. And with masks, it looks like we need to read the smiles through the eyes.

ponmudi bike trip

After two hours of beautiful scenery, the bus entered the Ponmudi hairpin bend. What followed was charming images of nature in its full glory. Fenced by mountainous terrain and greenery, it’s difficult to take your eyes off the scenery around us. But it wasn’t amusing to be interrupted by the hooting and howling of some of our co-passengers. Such a scenery requires peace and quiet. We took heart in the fact that maybe the etiquette of travel hadn’t reached these people.

As we started our way up, the scenery also started changing. We weren’t exactly alien to the changing climate of Ponmudi. You will be surrounded by mist and a cool breeze as the ride progresses. Even during the peak of summer in the capital, Ponmudi remained cool and breezy. So much so that one gets the feeling that maybe Ponmudi is on some other planet altogether. When we alighted from the bus it was so foggy that we couldn’t see each other. Since we hadn’t carried jackets or woolies with us, we could thoroughly enjoy the Ponmudi weather. Though we found the cold a bit unbearable soon we got used to it.

Mist covered Ponmudi We took our own sweet time to enjoy the scenic beauty of Ponmudi. There were tiny dewdrops jiggling over the leaves. We could see several stunning varieties of flowers scattered around us. Birds were crooning away. What really stuck amidst all this was a charming little butterfly hovering around, lost in the charm of the foggy landscape. Just for a minute, we felt envious of it. So carefree and happy, blending into the beauty of nature with abandon.

By evening we bid adieu to Ponmudi and got into the bus. Though it was very chilly during the afternoon, we could see the sun peeping in between. By then the visitors had started pouring in. Just when the mist seems to have gone into hiding, the mountains stood up and showed their magnificence and it was a splendid sight. During this occasion, we thought of the effect of climate change. Praying fervently that Ponmudi remains unscathed of such disasters we started our way back home.

Some of the beautiful tourist spots in Ponmudi Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary: A charming place on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, this wildlife sanctuary is blessed with an abundance of evergreen forests, hills, valleys, and freshwater swamps. Spread over an area of around 75 sq Km, this sanctuary shelters a variety of animals including sambar deer, elephants, and lions. Several endemic bird species including White-bellied Treepie, Malabar Grey Hornbill, and Small Sunbird can also, be found here.

Koyikkal Palace : Situated in Nedumangad village, around 18 km away from Thiruvananthapuram, the Koyikkal Palace was built for Umayamma, the queen of Venad royal family. Currently, the palace is known for its folklore museum and Numismatics Museum which is set up by the State Archaeological Department. A visit to this museum will introduce you to the fascinating art of Kerala which is stored here in the form of folk arts, household utensils, and musical instruments. The museum also houses a rare article called “Chandravalayam” which has become a major attraction for tourists. Vacationers, in large number, visit this place to watch its coin collection which has coins from different periods.

Agasthyakoodam : Apart from being a popular pilgrimage site, Agasthyakoodam is also a trekker’s paradise. A forested peak perched at an altitude of 6128 feet, it is regarded as the second highest peak of Kerala. It is a 28 km long trek that can be completed in 2 days. The trekking expedition kickstarts from Bonacaud, a place situated around 30 Km away from Ponmudi. The forest area of this trek is rich in medicinal herbs with around 2000 medicinal plants on its land and is situated in close proximity to Kottoor. Agasthyakoodam forests are also widely known for their rich wildlife and sprawling grasslands.

ponmudi bike trip

Varayattumotta : Regarded as the tallest peak in Ponmudi mountain ranges, Varayattumotta is popular as home to Nilgiri Tahr (mountain goat). In Malayalam, Nilgiri Tahar is called as Varayaadu and this is how the mountain got its name. This mountain peak stands tall at an altitude of 1100 meters and can be easily reached from Ponmudi or Mankayam check post. This mountain ridge is quite steep and hence very few trekkers opt for trekking through this route. Even if you choose to trek this treacherous trail, you will be accompanied by a forest guide. Most of the trekkers climb the mountain hill and get on their way back to Ponmudi. For all the adventure seekers, this is one of the most sought-after places to visit in Ponmudi.

Traveller Tips

  • Make sure you carry valid ID proofs with you. You might need them to gain access to some of the attractions in and around Ponmudi. Even if you don’t, I would personally suggest for you to keep the proper documentations with you while you are travelling.
  • Pack accordingly to the season which you have chosen to visit. Always choose comfortable clothes so that you will be left free to explore the beautiful landscapes of Ponmudi Hills.
  • Don’t forget to bring on your adventure spirit. There is plenty of indulging in Ponmudi. Chart out a plan with your tourist agency complete with trekking, hiking, paragliding, parasailing and rock-climbing.
  • Now, this I don’t think I need to specially mention to you but this is a reminder just in case you forget amidst the hustle and bustle of packing. I assure you that you will have a lot of moments to capture so do make sure that you have your camera with you.
  • You must carry a first-aid kit with you especially if you are travelling with your family. Kids often have the tendency to fall down and hurt themselves. Trust me; you will need the bandages to cover it up.
  • Carry handy medicines, especially if you are on prescribed drugs or medication. This is especially important if you have elderly people or children accompanying you.

Things to Do

  • Is there any limit to the things one can do in a hill station like Ponmudi? You can spend hours just gazing at the picturesque landscapes.
  • The Kallar River offers you wonderful opportunities for canoeing and rafting. Even if you are not into adventure sports, just take a dip. The soothing waters of Kallar are just like a Jacuzzi, set amidst lush valleys and misty hill tops. The perfect water massage for those nerves!
  • Trekking is a favourite sport for those who visit here and it is ideal for both novice as well as experienced trekkers.
  • The Ponmudi Hills offer the perfect vantage point for paragliding especially for novice gliders. It is comparatively safer than other peak points in the Ghat region.
  • The hill station packs a mean punch of adrenaline rush. You can go for a simple trekking expedition or go for paragliding or parasailing and even try out some rock climbing. There is always a first for everything and what best place to try this out than Ponmudi Hills?
  • How wonderful would it be to plan a picnic amidst gushing waterfalls in the distance and lush green valleys adorned with a velvet blanket of mist? You can even do this alone if you think it is time for some soul searching and contemplation. There is nothing like your comfort food and wider horizons that can change you.
  • You can also plan the picnic for your loved ones, especially if you have children with you. It would be a welcoming and refreshing change.

Availability of Guides

A golden feather in the hat of Kerala’s tourism, Ponmudi hills is a preferred tourist destination in Trivandrum. So, it does not come as a surprise that there is no shortage of tour guides. I would personally suggest for you to plan your trip with a tour agency especially if you are travelling with your family. This would ensure that you are safe and secure; all the while making the most out of your trip. Then it is the responsibility of the tour agency to put you in the hands of an expert guide. Or you can go rogue and just head to this petite little hill station. But if you want to plan the trip by yourself then you can head out straight and if you want you can avail a local guide from there, which you will find in plenty. But I would advise you to hire your guide from the official tourism office at Trivandrum, so that you will be making the right choice and can eliminate the risk of inconveniences.

Best Time to Visit

Kerala is one of those rare places where you can pay a visit any time of the year. This year-round destination packs a truck load of fun, no matter what the season. Here are how the seasons go. The months from March to May are generally the summer season in Kerala and the temperature is as high as 35 degree Celsius. The monsoon in Kerala falls in two phases. The first monsoon season will be from June and lasts up to August. The second phase of monsoon falls from October to November. The winter begins in December and extends till the month of February. However recent climatic events have changed the weather conditions. So, you better, check the climate beforehand. So, as you have guessed the best time to visit Ponmudi Hills is after the onset of winters and also in the summers. This is a great escape from the heat waves in Trivandrum. Just avoid the monsoons, because these destructs your chances of exploration and other adventure activities. So, I would suggest the winters as your best bet to visit Ponmudi when the climate is fairly pleasant and welcoming. The winters in Ponmudi also gives you the best opportunity to enjoy the mist.

How to Reach

Quite unfortunately there are no direct trains to Ponmudi Hills and being a hill station this does not come as a surprise. The nearest airport to Ponmudi hills is located approximately 50 kms away. The Trivandrum International Airport is well connected with domestic and international flights from all over the world. The half an hour distance between Ponmudi Hills and Trivandrum International Airport can be easily covered if you avail the services of local transportation. If you need some privacy and want to travel at your own convenience then I suggest that you book a cab. The nearest railway station to Ponmudi is Trivandrum Central Railway Station, which is also approximated at a distance of 55kms away from Ponmudi Hills.

Category - Hill Stations

Ponmudi's idyllic hills, on the fringes of Thiruvananthapuram city in Kerala, served as the backdrop to India’s first-ever mountain bike competition, the Asian Mountain Bike Championship 2023. This event, hosted in the month of October, was a gateway to the 2024 Olympics in Paris and saw the active participation of close to 20 national teams from worldwide locations. The steep and hilly terrain of Ponmudi presented a tough challenge for the riders, and offered them an opportunity to showcase their endurance.

This scenic route along the embankment of the Moskva River will take you away from the city’s infamous traffic. Start at Nagatinskaya Embankment, one of the most beautiful in the capital due to the fascinating architecture dotted along it.

Cycle onto Novospassky Bridge and cross onto the other side of the embankment before riding over to Ustinsky Bridge. Jump off your bike and take the stairs down.

Once on level ground, pedal past two of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks - Red Square and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior - then on to Luzhniki.

Follow signs to the Novodevichya and Savvinskaya Embankments.

Ride in the direction of Smolenskaya and Krasnopresnenskaya Metro stations and you’ll eventually reach the Moscow International Business Center (Moscow City) and its stunning array of skyscrapers.

The complex includes more than 500 permanent structures and 49 of them are objects of cultural heritage. Cycle through the park before arriving at the Moscow Botanical Garden of Academy of Sciences, right next to VDNKh. Then follow signs to the Rock Garden, also referred as the Moscow’s “stone jungle.”

Ostankino Park is the next stop and it’s known for its wide avenues, ponds, and lush greenery. Cycle a little further and you’ll come to some beautiful examples of 17th and 18th century architecture. Pass by both the Berezhkovskaya and Vorobyevskaya Embankments and take a break on the observation deck at Sparrow Hills. From here you can see all of the Seven Sisters skyscrapers. Next, ride on down to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then to Arbat Street, which will lead you to an unforgettable view of the Kremlin and Red Square.

Then head to New Arbat Avenue and take a rest at Patriarch Ponds. Visit the Bulgakov Museum and take a look at the Moscow Satire Theater and Mossovet Theater. Continue biking towards Sadovo-Trimfalnyy Square and follow the signs to Moscow’s Hermitage Garden. Here you can enjoy a cool beer in the shade.

Chistyye Prudy to Sokolniki Park - 7km

Ustyinsky  Square -  Chistyye  Prudy - Sretensky Boulevard - Sovremennik Theater - Komsomolskaya Square - Sokolniki Park

Stepan Zharky

This route starts off at the Ustinsky Bridge that stretches over Moskva River. After enjoying the beautiful views bike northeast to Yauzsky Boulevard, continue onto Pokrovsky Boulevard, and then cycle to Chistoprudny Boulevard. Your first stop will be Chistyye Prudy – a park in the city center surrounding a charming pond and pavilion. There are a number of sculptures and monuments here that have been glorified countless times in both literary and musical works.

Once you’ve had your fill of Moscow’s “green island,” pedal in the direction of Turgenevskaya Metro - you’ll end up at Academician Sakharov Avenue. Then continue to Komsomolskaya Metro followed by Rusakovskaya Street. Turn left and follow signs to one of the city’s most bike-friendly parks: Sokolniki.

Moscow Bike Tours - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

The cycling revolution in Paris continues: Bicycle use now exceeds car use

A study indicates that 11.2% of trips in the french capital are made on two wheels, compared to 4.3% in four-wheel vehicles.

Ciclismo Paris

It’s rush hour on Rue de Rivoli, one of the main arteries of the French capital. The bicycles pass one after another in quick succession, ringing their bell when a pedestrian crosses without looking. Five years ago, it was cars that monopolized this three-kilometer axis that runs in front of Paris City Hall and the Louvre Museum . Not anymore. Two-wheel transportation has prevailed, favored by a paradigm shift in urban mobility. The cycling revolution, promoted by local authorities, is beginning to bear fruit: according to a recent study by the Paris Région Institute, a public agency, bicycles already surpass cars as a means of transportation in the interior of Paris, accounting for 11.2% of trips compared to 4.3%. A similar trend is seen in trips between the suburbs and the city center: 14% are made by bicycle and 11.8% by car.

Rue de Rivoli, with its two-way cycle lanes and its dedicated lane for buses and taxis, is perhaps one of the most emblematic examples of the change that the city has experienced in recent years. But it’s not the only one. The perpendicular Boulevard de Sébastopol has become the route most frequented by cyclists, with figures that usually exceed 10,000 daily trips, according to the count kept by the association Paris en Selle.

When it is sunny, the density can be so high that traffic jams sometimes occur, and the narrowness of the lane causes friction between bikes, creating moments of tension. City officials led by Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a Socialist, have tried to remedy this situation by building other bike lanes on parallel streets.

From north to south and east to west, the map of the capital has been filled with infrastructure that gives the bicycle a privileged place. Paris has more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) of facilities adapted for cyclists, including more than 300 km (186 m) of bike lanes and 52 km (32 m) of provisional lanes, according to the latest available municipal data, from 2021. The rest are lanes shared with cars or lanes only marked with paint on the ground.

By 2026, local officials want the entire city to be suitable for two-wheel transportation. To this end, it has set aside $250 million, $100 million more than in Hidalgo’s first term. This summer’s Olympic Games will serve as an accelerator of this new “bike plan,” with routes that will allow access to the Olympic venues.

But there is still some way to go. The Paris en Selle association warns that only 27% of the “bike plan” has been carried out despite the fact that 62% of Hidalgo’s second term in office has already elapsed. The Deputy Mayor of Paris for Transportation, David Belliard, acknowledges that there are delays, but does not lose hope. Progress is noticeable.

In some thoroughfares, the number of bikes already surpasses vehicles. Between 2022 and 2023, the use of bike lanes doubled at peak times, according to data collected by the capital’s 128 counters. The goal is to create a network of cycling paths that run along the busiest metro lines, to unclog public transit and offer an equally fast and safe alternative for commuters.

The number of people who travel by bicycle has increased exponentially. Vélib, the municipal urban bicycle rental service, has increased its fleet with 3,000 new bikes since March. Edmée Doroszlai, a 62-year-old Parisian, still remembers the first time she started riding on two wheels in the early 1980s. “It was monstrous, almost impossible and very dangerous,” she says from the center of Paris, with her bike at her side.

“There is also a big change in how men behave when they see a woman on a bike,” she adds, alluding to the normalization of its use. The presence of adapted infrastructure, she confirms, has encouraged her to use it more, as have many families who travel on cycle paths with small children.

“We still have to go further,” Belliard insisted in an interview with BFMTV earlier this month. The councilor was reacting to the study by the Paris Région Institute, the regional urban planning and environment agency, which indicated that 11.2% of trips in Paris were made by bike between 2022 and 2023, compared to 4.3% by car. The change in trend is clear. In 2021, two wheels still represented 5.6% of trips, while cars were 9%, according to Belliard.

Notre Dame

In addition to surpassing the car as a means of travel within Paris, the research indicates that residents of the nearest suburbs also prefer to use the bike, with 14% of trips compared to 11.8% for cars. The figures are even better during rush hour, when 18.9% of trips are made by bike and only 6.6% by car. Travel on foot, however, continues to lead mobility within the municipality with 53%, followed by those made on public transit, with 30%. The study was carried out with 3,337 residents of the capital region who agreed to be fitted with a GPS tracker.

The bike gradually gained popularity during the public transist strike that paralyzed the capital in December 2019, in protest of President Emmanuel Macron’s pension reform . But it was also prominent after the Covid confinement in 2020, when the city tested the so-called “coronapistes,” temporary cycling lanes that progressively became permanent. Like Rivoli’s.

Better connections with neighborhoods

“The network is very good,” says Arnaud Faure, 31, co-owner of the Bivouac Cycles bicycle repair shop in Saint Ouen, a banlieue (suburb) in the north of the city. He has been in the French capital for two years and every day he travels 13 km (8 miles) to get to work and again the same to get back home. He says that almost all of his journey is along bike paths. But he cites two drawbacks. On one hand, the lack of safe parking, a determining factor for bicycle use. On the other hand, the fact that “just like in big cities, traffic is dense and can sometimes be dangerous.”

In 12 years, car traffic has decreased by 40% in Paris, according to City Hall. “But these rapid changes in habits have been accompanied by tension” in the streets, the mayor has admitted. “It takes time for everyone to find their place and feel safe,” she added, following road regulations that seek to raise awareness about the shared use of public space. Last summer, posters appeared throughout the city reminding everyone that pedestrians have the priority and that the speed limit for cars is 30 km/h (18 mph).

The city’s plan includes increasing the number of parking spaces for bicycles. The goal is to build more than 130,000 new spots. “Parking at train stations must be developed on a massive scale,” stresses Aymeric Cotard, 29, a member of the association Mieux se déplacer à bicyclette [Better to get around by bike]. One of the large projects that should be completed this year, with 1,200 spaces, is located just behind the Gare du Nord, one of the busiest stations in France. For Cotard, however, it will be insufficient. In the Dutch city of Utrecht, the station has 12,500 spaces for bikes.

The idea is that people who live in the suburbs and take the train daily to work will also use the bicycle once they arrive in Paris. It is one of the main challenges of the coming years, along with facilitating continuous journeys between the capital and its suburbs. “This requires the banlieue cities to do their job and the city of Paris to also improve its entrances, which are inhospitable and unpleasant by bike,” warns Cotard. In addition, it is necessary to provide infrastructure for a flow of cyclists that will be even greater in the future.

The process takes time and has encountered some opposition. But the morphology of the city is changing, adapting to the bike. And, with it, its resilience to the effects of climate change.
