We used Judy at Premier Tours & Travel to book our Alaskan Cruise in June. She listened to what we were really interested in doing and came up with a detailed plan that was so spot on, they might as well call it the Jenny & Craig package from here on out. She arranged for our flights, a hotel stay in Seattle and left us detailed instructions on what to do when we got to the boat. There were absolutely no surprises - only an incredible trip that was so insanely beautiful, we were gasping the entire time. I even think she somehow coordinated the pod of humpback whales that visited us while were were out on our balcony and again during dinner outside of our window. It was truly a trip we will never forget. Thank you so much, Judy and Premier!

Maria does an outstanding job for her clients. She has arranged travel for us to Peru and the Gallapagos with friends. It went beautifully well. Every important detail was planned to our wishes. Just a few weeks ago we took our family to Italy for two weeks. Her work to get 10 of us transported, guided as we chose and staying in perfect places was really above and beyond all expectations. Our grandkids will always be thankful for her work. We are extremely thankful for her work rescuing us from the issue of a missing driver from Venice to Milan beginning at 2:30 a.m. her time. Who else would be such a superwoman?

For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

With trips on every continent, Exodus Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Best Adventure Group Travel: World Expeditions

Groups of hikers walking and camping around the mountains of Kilimanjaro with World Expeditions

World Expeditions has been taking adventurous travelers to remote locations all over the world ever since its first group trek through Nepal in 1975. Today, World Expeditions offers active itineraries on every continent. Intrepid travelers can opt for trips themed around mountaineering, rafting, cycling, hiking, and more.

World Expeditions aims to leave communities and places where they operate tours better than they found them. jet lag the game

The “ Jet Lag: The Game ” creators Sam Denby, Ben Doyle and Adam Chase have set their next reality travel competition series, “ The Getaway ,” to debut this summer on indie streamer Nebula .

The show, which unlike “Jet Lag” (where episodes drop later on YouTube) will be available exclusively on Nebula, follows six creators on a road trip through the American West as they compete in a game of social strategy and deception.

Production on the series kicks off April 8.

Though it’s from the same team that makes “Jet Lag: The Game,” “The Getaway” is a separate project from that travel competition series, which just concluded its Switzerland-set ninth season. Season 10 of “Jet Lag,” which will take place in Australia, is already in the works.

Denby, who is also chief content officer at Nebula, will executive produce “The Getaway” alongside Nebula CEO Dave Wiskus and vice president of production Trenton Waterson. Denby will direct, with Doyle and Chase heavily involved in production. Valentina Vee is serving as DP.

“The Getaway” is among several originals recently picked up as part of Nebula’s 2024 programming slate.

“’The Jet Lag’ team told us they had an idea, so we greenlit it,” Wiskus said.

“We’ve been working on this show for the better part of a year so it’s extremely rewarding to see it coming together,” Denby added. “We’ve taken everything we’ve learned from producing ‘Jet Lag’ to the next level to create an exciting new spin on a travel competition series that viewers won’t want to miss.”

Destination X

Adventure travel series Destination X has been officially picked up to series by NBC .

The show is expected to air on the network in 2025 and the U.S. version of the Belgian format will be produced by production company Twofour , which is also making a separate British version for the BBC.

The BBC greenlit its own version last year with Twofour producing.

It is a similar model employed on breakout mystery format The Traitors.

Destination X sees a group of contestants go on the road trip of a lifetime but they have no idea of their location. In order to win, they must figure out their mystery locations. Once they’re on the blacked-out Destination X bus, the journey turns into a real-life game board, with challenges designed to offer clues as to their location, along with a few misdirects to keep them guessing.

At the end of each episode, the contestant who places an X on a map furthest from the actual location packs their bags. The first participant to reach Destination X will be crowned the winner.

Twofour, which is owned by British broadcaster ITV, is behind series such as Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveller . It will co-produce the NBC version with Universal Television Alternative Studio. Production will begin later this year.

Caroline Davies, Andy Cadman, Dan Adamson and David Clews will exec produce the NBC version.

“ Destination X is one of the most unique and innovative formats we’ve seen in a long time, and it’s so big we partnered with the BBC again to shoot two shows at once,” said Corie Henson, EVP, Unscripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “This show is an epic international travel adventure combined with the ultimate guessing game. Even if you’ve never been on a plane, you can play along.”

“The entire Twofour team couldn’t be more proud to have won the tender to produce this incredible adventure format, particularly given the pedigree of the other companies in the process,” said Dan Adamson, Twofour MD. “Our editorial ambition for this project is fortunately matched by our best-in-class production team, who constantly make the impossible possible. We are excited to be on this journey with our talented producing partners at UTAS and grateful to the brilliant commissioning teams at both NBCU and the BBC for the hard work and creativity they have already put into the process.”

Has remote work changed how people travel in the US?

Press contact :.

Previous image Next image

The prevalence of remote work since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has significantly changed urban transportation patterns in the U.S., according to new study led by MIT researchers.

The research finds significant variation between the effects of remote work on vehicle miles driven and on mass-transit ridership across the U.S.

“A 1 percent decrease in onsite workers leads to a roughly 1 percent reduction in [automobile] vehicle miles driven, but a 2.3 percent reduction in mass transit ridership,” says Yunhan Zheng SM ’21, PhD ’24, an MIT postdoc who is co-author of a the study.

“This is one of the first studies that identifies the causal effect of remote work on vehicle miles traveled and transit ridership across the U.S.,” adds Jinhua Zhao, an MIT professor and another co-author of the paper.

By accounting for many of the nuances of the issue, across the lower 48 states and the District of Columbia as well as 217 metropolitan areas, the scholars believe they have arrived at a robust conclusion demonstrating the effects of working from home on larger mobility patterns.

The paper, “ Impacts of remote work on vehicle miles traveled and transit ridership in the USA ,” appears today in the journal Nature Cities . The authors are Zheng, a doctoral graduate of MIT’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and a postdoc at the Singapore–MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART); Shenhao Wang PhD ’20, an assistant professor at the University of Florida; Lun Liu, an assistant professor at Peking University; Jim Aloisi, a lecturer in MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP); and Zhao, the Professor of Cities and Transportation, founder of the MIT Mobility Initiative, and director of MIT’s JTL Urban Mobility Lab and Transit Lab.

The researchers gathered data on the prevalence of remote work from multiple sources, including Google location data, travel data from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration and the National Transit Database, and the monthly U.S. Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes (run jointly by Stanford University, the University of Chicago, ITAM, and MIT).

The study reveals significant variation among U.S. states when it comes to how much the rise of remote work has affected mileage driven.

“The impact of a 1 percent change in remote work on the reduction of vehicle miles traveled in New York state is only about one-quarter of that in Texas,” Zheng observes. “There is real variation there.”

At the same time, remote work has had the biggest effect on mass-transit revenues in places with widely used systems, with New York City, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, and Philadelphia making up the top five hardest-hit metro areas.

The overall effect is surprisingly consistent over time, from early 2020 through late 2022.

“In terms of the temporal variation, we found that the effect is quite consistent across our whole study period,” Zheng says. “It’s not just significant in the early stage of the pandemic, when remote work was a necessity for many. The magnitude remains consistent into the later period, when many people have the flexibility to choose where they want to work. We think this may have long-term implications.”

Additionally, the study estimates the impact that still larger numbers of remote workers could have on the environment and mass transit.

“On a national basis, we estimate that a 10 percent decrease in the number of onsite workers compared to prepandemic levels will reduce the annual total vehicle-related CO2 emissions by 191.8 million metric tons,” Wang says.

The study also projects that across the 217 metropolitan areas in the study, a 10 percent decrease in the number of onsite workers, compared to prepandemic levels, would lead to an annual loss of 2.4 billion transit trips and $3.7 billion in fare revenue — equal to roughly 27 percent of the annual transit ridership and fare revenue in 2019.

“The substantial influence of remote work on transit ridership highlights the need for transit agencies to adapt their services accordingly, investing in services tailored to noncommuting trips and implementing more flexible schedules to better accommodate the new demand patterns,” Zhao says.

The research received support from the MIT Energy Initiative; the Barr Foundation; the National Research Foundation, Prime Minister’s Office, Singapore under its Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise program; the Research Opportunity Seed Fund 2023 from the University of Florida; and the Beijing Social Science Foundation.

The spokesperson also shared with T+L that guests impacted by the cancellations will receive a full refund and a 10% percent discount in the form of a Future Cruise Credit towards any sailing through Dec. 31, 2025. "In addition, we understand the inconvenience and frustration this disruption may cause affected guests, so we have shared alternative sailings similar to their original booking," the spokesperson added, encouraging impacted guests to head to contact the company at 1-800-327-7030 for more information.

In February 2024, NCL also announced it would no longer dock in Venice, Italy, due to restrictions of the waterways.  “While we have made every effort possible to maintain these calls to Venice, the tender operation and overall experience this provides our guests has fallen short of the standard we aim to deliver,” a spokesperson from NCL told T+L at the time.  Despite the cancellations, the cruise industry continues to rebound since COVID-19 closures. The industry is expected to grow to 130 million global passengers in 2026, which is up from 73 million global passengers in 2022, according to a 2023 report from the Cruise Lines International Association.

Premier Inn guests who faced ‘spider army’ fail to claim good night refund

Couple among those who say they have struggled to redeem on hotel chain’s ‘guarantee’ promising decent sleep

P remier Inn’s adverts say that a good night’s sleep is “guaranteed”, but a couple have claimed that any hope of that went out of the window when a “small army” of spiders began marching across the ceiling of their hotel room.

Jonathan Rees, who filmed what he claimed was an “epic gathering” of arachnids, is one of a number of readers who have contacted the Guardian after they attempted to claim on Premier Inn’s “Good Night Guarantee” but failed to get their money back.

Britain’s biggest hotel chain is famous for the promise, which was launched more than 20 years ago and has in the past been promoted with ads featuring the actor and comedian Sir Lenny Henry.

It says: “We’re so confident you’ll have a great night’s sleep that if you don’t, we’ll give you your money back*.”

However, that asterisk is important: it would seem that many people who claim on the guarantee are falling foul of the exclusions contained in the terms and conditions (T&Cs).

Jonathan Rees and his wife, Yunis

It appears one of the main reasons why people have their claims rejected is that they decided to lie there hoping that the alleged problem, be it a noisy extractor fan or drunk people in the corridors, would go away rather than going down to reception to demand it be sorted out.

Premier Inn said all three cases flagged by the Guardian “fall outside the terms of our Good Night Guarantee”. However, it declined to share any data on the pledge – for example, how many people claim on it, or what proportion get their money back.

Rees and his wife, Yunis, who live in Swansea, spent £208 on a two-night stay at a Premier Inn outside Cardiff. He said that “only after settling down on a comfy and perfectly clean pillow” did he notice a cluster of spiders making their way across the ceiling.

“Only the video does it justice,” he said. “My wife has a phobia of spiders, but there was no way to hide this from her. We were given a new, properly cleaned room, but my wife couldn’t sleep for the two-night duration.” In an email to Premier Inn, Rees said it was a “traumatising event to see a small army of spiders crawling across the ceiling”.

A Premier Inn spokesperson said the couple were immediately transferred to a new room after notifying reception of “the issue”, adding: “Guest relations declined a refund on the basis that the problem was reported and resolved immediately, and the guest opted to continue their stay.”

Another customer, Paul Howell (not his real name), had a three-night stay at Premier Inn’s London Euston hotel “at an eye-watering £228 a night”. He said that on arrival the room was very hot, and that the temperature reached 28C, resulting in him sleeping for “around three or four hours a night”.

He attempted to claim on the guarantee but received a reply, saying that particular hotel “does not offer air conditioning as a facility. Therefore, this falls under our exclusions.”

The company told the Guardian: “Our T&Cs do specify that claims are rejected when the complaint arises due to the lack of a facility that we do not offer – for example, when A/C is not provided.” It added that as a goodwill gesture, unconnected to the guarantee, one-third of Howell’s accommodation costs were refunded.

after newsletter promotion

A third customer claimed her night was ruined by a noisy extractor fan. Alison, who declined to give her surname, said she booked a stay at a Premier Inn in Nottingham at a cost of £257 for two nights.

She settled down to sleep but soon realised an extractor was still running somewhere. “It was low-level but loud enough to be irritating. I lay awake feeling upset ... I tried to grab sleep by covering my ears, still hoping it would go.”

She said that next morning she told reception about the annoying noise and her lack of sleep.

Alison was later told that the Premier Inn would not be able to offer a refund. A spokesperson told the Guardian: “This was reported the next morning, while the apparent disruption occurred throughout the night. T&Cs do specify that any internal noise must be reported within a reasonable period of time that allows the team the opportunity to rectify the issue.”

This exclusion relating to internal noise appears to have caused a number of claims to be rejected. Internet forums on websites such as MoneySavingExpert feature a number of alleged cases similar to Alison’s. In a post on Mumsnet in 2022, one person wrote: “They only guarantee a good night’s sleep if you’re willing to report issues to them in the middle of the night.” Another from that year said: “If you are disturbed by internal hotel noise, you have to report it to reception at the exact time during the night if it is ‘safe’ to do so.”

However, in both cases, reader polls on Mumsnet suggested most voters thought these two customers were being “unreasonable”. Premier Inn said it could not comment on these cases without more information.

Premier Inn also said the guarantee did not apply if your sleep was affected by circumstances beyond the company’s “reasonable control”, such as extreme weather, fire alarms going off and “third-party building works”.

White House says Kamala Harris will travel to Arizona after state Supreme Court abortion ban ruling

Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Arizona on Friday, the White House announced Tuesday, shortly after the state Supreme Court upheld a near-total abortion ban .

Harris will travel to Tucson, the White House said in an advisory, "to continue her leadership in the fight for reproductive freedoms." It noted that it will be the vice president's second trip to Arizona this year and her fifth time since being sworn in.

"Last month, the Vice President visited Phoenix, AZ to highlight how extremists in states across the country have proposed and enacted abortion bans that threaten women’s health, force them to travel out of state to receive care, and criminalize doctors," the White House said.

The White House said that the trip was part of Harris' nationwide "Fight for Reproductive Freedoms" tour "that included stops in Wisconsin, California, Georgia, Michigan, Arizona, and Minnesota."

Vice President Kamala Harris at Planned Parenthood

Since the Supreme Court's ruling overturning Roe v. Wade, Harris has held more than 80 events on reproductive rights in 20 states, the White House added.

The announcement about her upcoming trip came just about an hour after the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that a 160-year-old near-total abortion ban still on the books in the state could be enforced. Under the law from 1864, anyone who performs the procedure or helps a woman access that care could face felony charges and up to two to five years in prison. The  law  — which was codified in 1901, and again in 1913 — includes an exception to save the woman’s life.

President Joe Biden, Harris and Democrats in general are hoping that existing abortion bans and threats to expand them nationwide will help them win their races in this November's general election.

  • Annual 15,000 point bonus
  • 8x on qualifying gas purchases
  • 5x on marketing and select utilities
  • No statement credits
  • No travel-related insurance

Why we chose it: The Wyndham Rewards Earner® Business Card provides high rewards on both hotel purchases and business-related expenses for a modest annual fee, on top of a generous annual bonus that could be redeemed for up to two free nights.

This Wyndham card gives you 8x points at Wyndham, in addition to 12x points as a Diamond level member (automatic upon card approval) — this translates to 20x points per dollar when making eligible purchases at qualifying Wyndham properties.

Making it even more convenient for cross country trips, Wyndham has the most properties in the U.S. of any hotel chain, and includes budget hotels such as Days Inn and Howard Johnson.

As far as business rewards go, you can earn 5x points on marketing and advertising, including most digital platforms like Google Ads and Facebooks, and on utilities, such as phones and electrical service.

Although it doesn’t offer an annual free night, the card does offer 15,000 bonus points each anniversary year. That can be redeemed for up to two nights, depending on the room cost (Wyndham rooms start at 7,500 points). Cardholders also get a 10% discount when redeeming points for go free® nights, a program that offers nights at a fixed points value, which could be 7,500, 15,000 or 30,000 depending on the hotel.

Unfortunately, there are no insurance policies other than cell phone protection and the standard fraud liability protection, which is this card’s biggest drawback. If you plan on traveling by plane a lot, consider other of our picks for a more comprehensive insurance package.

Best Hotel Credit Cards Guide

How do hotel credit cards work, how to choose the best hotel credit card, how to maximize the value of your hotel credit card, how to redeem your hotel credit card rewards, latest news on hotel credit cards.

A hotel credit card is a co-branded card issued by a hotel line and a financial institution such as Chase Bank or American Express®. These cards usually provide high reward rates for booking stays, buying tickets for shows or merchandise at all the hotels under the brand’s umbrella. These rewards are in addition to the ones you’ll get as a loyalty member, as these cards will automatically grant you member status with the brand.

Overall, hotel credit cards work just like regular credit cards, meaning you’ll have a credit line for an established amount that you can use, and you have to make at least a minimum payment each billing cycle.

Reward structures are similar to regular credit cards too, you earn a certain amount of points, statement credits or other miscellaneous benefits depending on how much you spend and where.

Here are some of the difference on how rewards work:

  • Hotel credit cards offer more points than average credit cards do when you make eligible purchases at participating hotels, including at restaurants within hotel premises, gift shops and more.
  • Points are added to the ones you get as an elite status member of the hotel brand, a status that also comes automatically with card enrollment. This increases the points earned significantly.
  • Unfortunately, points tend to be limited to the particular brand instead of the issuer’s. For example, points earned through the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card, which is issued by Chase, can’t be used in the Chase Ultimate Rewards® portal.
  • Points have drastically more value when redeemed for hotel purchases such as hotel stays or room upgrades when compared to statement credits or gift cards, for example.

Hotel benefits

Some offer other such as a free night every year, free breakfast, special discounts, priority booking, early check-in and much more depending on the hotel and the type of card. These, of course, will depend largely on the type of annual fee the card charges.

There are roughly four tiers of annual fees when it comes to cards. These are, typically, no annual fee cards, budget or low cost ($50-$99), mid-range ($150-$300) and luxury or premium ($350+).

Pros and cons of hotel credit cards

Hotel credit cards are packed with perks, but whether a card is worth it for you will depend on many factors. Here are some pros and cons to consider:

  • Rewards at the hotel are very high and are added to rewards earned as a member
  • Many cards offer at least one free night annually
  • Hotel-related perks such as early check-in, free breakfast and room discounts
  • Usually offer travel benefits like rewards for buying tickets, travel-related insurance and more
  • Many of the major hotel brands have large networks of hotels for different budgets and locations
  • High reward rates are typically limited to purchases within the hotel brand, not everyday spending
  • Flight-related perks aren't as abundant as with more general travel cards
  • Points tend to be much less valuable when redeemed outside of the hotel

Hotel credit cards vs. travel credit cards

While travel credit cards could encompass hotel, airline and general travel-focused cards, travel cards — such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card — usually reward you for a variety of travel-related expenses, for example, airline tickets and rentals, such as the. Hotel credit cards, on the other hand, are specifically designed to give you higher rewards and specific perks when you make purchases within their hotel line.

Travel cards

  • Usually offer much higher rewards for travel purchases, including airfare and rental cars
  • Can offer high rewards in hotels regardless of brand
  • More versatility and options when transferring reward points
  • Offer a wider variety of insurance policies, such as rental insurance and baggage protection
  • Tend to have more bonus categories than branded hotel cards

Hotel cards

  • Points earned at hotels surpass those of travel cards, which, at the most, grant 10x points, while hotel cards offer up to 14x, on top of points acquired through membership, totaling well past 20x points per dollar
  • Have hotel-specific perks such as free stays, free Wi-Fi and free breakfast
  • Bumps up your member status at the hotel chain, which in turn increases the amount of perks
  • Points can be worth a lot more during specific times of the year or in specific hotels within the brand, depending on time, location and any deals available

Not all hotels are made equal, and neither are their credit cards or membership rewards programs. When choosing a hotel credit card, it’s important to take into account not just the card itself, but the hotels it works with.

1. Compare credit card basics

As with any other credit card, you should compare features like the annual fee, APR, the issuer and a baseline of the rewards offered.

As mentioned above, there are different tiers, according to the annual fee. Once you’ve decided how much you’re willing to pay, you can start to compare rewards, benefits, insurance and the hotel network. Once you’re comparing within each category, you’ll more easily find standouts that deliver far more benefits than their direct competitors.

2. Think about how often you travel

If you travel once or twice a year to visit family, you might enjoy the occasional free night, but a co-branded hotel card won’t be the best option for you. Instead, you can take a look at our best travel credit cards . With these cards, there are more travel rewards and benefits like higher points for ticket purchases, flight cancellation insurance and the such, along with higher rewards on everyday purchases.

However, if you travel often for work or you vacation a few times a year, you’ll probably really take advantage of all the benefits that come with a hotel credit card.

As you accrue points, you’ll go up in member status, get more free nights, and enjoy amenities like free Wi-Fi, discounts and priority booking. This could make your trips more comfortable and a lot cheaper.

3. Analyze rewards and perks

Once you have a list of the cards you’re strongly considering, you can start comparing their rewards. Remember, however, that points systems can vary greatly due to issuer, hotel brand and the actual hotel you try to redeem them at.

With this in mind, look at the versatility each hotel brand has. If their network is large enough and their affiliates cover a wider spectrum of budgets and locations, you can at least get an idea of how many options you’ll have when redeeming.

Consider the everyday spending categories the card rewards you for as well. If your goal is to amass enough points to get free nights or large discounts, you may benefit from high reward rates in categories such as gas, dining and grocery shopping. While some cards could look a lot more tempting than others due to that reward rate at the hotels, others could actually deliver more value through regular spending throughout the year.

4. Consider which hotel brand appeals to you the most

One of the main issues with hotel credit cards is that they’re made for a specific hotel chain. While they can be used for any type of purchase (including rival hotels), the highest reward rates and perks are limited to that brand.

The good news is that hotel chains actually have a lot of different hotels under their name, and some can range from very low cost rooms to fine hotels and luxurious villas in any part of the world. All the big names have thousands of properties across the globe, but all are different, so compare the range of options in terms of prices, locations and variety of properties and amenities. Also, see if you recognize any that you particularly enjoy, or that you already use frequently due to your traveling circumstances.

It’s also a good idea to look at the different perks each brand offers for its elite members. Most hotel credit cards grant a certain level of membership, but the benefits that come with it depend on the hotel’s membership program. Look into the details, whether the program offers free nights, free Wi-Fi, room upgrades or more. The program itself could be a deciding factor in your credit card choice.

Use for everyday expenses

One of the best and easiest ways to accrue points is to use your credit card regularly, not just at the hotel. In some cases, cards earn a lot of points for everyday purchases like groceries, gas and utilities. Also, some cards give large bonuses or other perks when a certain spending threshold is reached.

Use your annual free night

This doesn’t necessarily add to your points, but if the card offers a free night per year (and most do), make sure to not let it go to waste. If you don’t get the chance to travel or vacation, using this perk at the end of the year to relax or take a quick trip somewhere ensures that you truly take advantage of your benefits.

Look for transfer possibilities

While using your card within the hotel’s loyalty program is likely the best option, there are some cases in which transferring to a partner can increase the value of your points. Read the fine print and look for transfer partners in the card’s network to see if there’s a chance to get more for your points whether through converting them into miles or to a credit card issuer’s points system such as Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

Investigate which hotels waive resort fees

Resort fees can increase the standard room prices, sometimes significantly so. Some hotel brands waive these fees if you pay with points. Before choosing a card, look for specific hotels within the brand’s umbrella that do this.

Research prices and overall demand in different seasons

Hotel pricing changes constantly, and the same is true for the amount of points needed to get free nights or room upgrades. Stay on top of these changes to at least have an idea of when and where you can make the most out of your points.

How much is a hotel point worth?

Hotel points vary significantly depending on the card issuer and hotel brand, as well as how, when and where you redeem them.

While you can redeem points for a variety of things, such as gift cards, room upgrades or even retail deals through a hotel’s loyalty program, one of the most common and sought-after perks are free or discounted nights.

Here’s a table showing the approximate range of points needed for a free night in some of the most well-known hotel companies in the world.

Keep in mind, however, that the amount of points needed changes depending on the specific hotel chosen, the style of room, its location and when the points are redeemed as a room’s price can change drastically with the seasons.

Not all chains will have the lowest-cost rooms in the US (or any given country, for that matter) or at the time of booking. As mentioned above, it’s best to research each hotel chain and see what budgets they cover and where before making a final decision.

In most cases, points are automatically transferred from your credit card program to the hotel’s program after each billing cycle, although in some it might take up to 12 weeks for the transfer.

In order to redeem the points, you need to log into your hotel’s loyalty program and look for redemption options, such as hotel rooms, upgrades, gift cards or transfer points to partners such as airlines or even other hotel chains. You can also use your points to get higher membership status.

Best Hotel Credit Cards FAQs

What hotels have their own credit card, why is it important to have a hotel credit card, which card is best for hotel rewards, what rewards and perks can you expect with a hotel credit card, can you use a hotel credit card for everyday purchases, are there any fees associated with using a hotel credit card, how we chose the best hotel credit cards.

Finding the best hotel credit cards meant looking not just into the cards themselves, but into the different hotel chains that co-branded them, among other factors listed below:

Points and overall rewards

We compared the amount of points each card gave for eligible purchases at each hotel chain as well as points awarded for everyday spending categories such as dining or gas, which could make accumulating points much easier.

Hotel-specific perks

Points aren’t the only way to earn with hotel cards. We looked at the perks each card gives you within the hotel or in the process of booking, such as annual free nights, status upgrades, complimentary room upgrades and more. We also compared the perks that each separate hotel offers with the member status the card provides.

When traveling, insurance is a big deal. Hotel cards should have a good amount of coverage, such as trip cancellation and delay insurance, baggage insurance and rental insurance. There’s also other coverages for everyday spending such as extended warranty and purchase protection. We took these insurance policies into account when making our selections.

Welcome offers

Although welcome bonuses and intro offers in general change consistently, and we don’t include them in reviews, we looked at them to get an idea of what and how much each card regularly offers. Customers should be able to start enjoying their new card as soon as possible.
