Pentatonix Fan Report: Ratings and Reviews

1 reviews (ø 5.0), dream come true.

It was a dream come true seeing my music heroes! Seeing them live singing my favourite songs and then participating in the audience with Scott, Kevin and Matt was an absolute blast! I hope they saw me - I was wearing a Keith Haring oversized t shirt in the seating area. They were all stunning 🤩! Ellie Green their warm up act was fun and quirky too. I’m attracted to fun and quirky. 🤭 Parking was irrelevant on this occasion since we used public transport. We just had drinks at the event, which was ok. Security people were actually fun, helpful and courteous. Really appreciated them.

About Pentatonix

As one of the most innovative, inventive, and inimitable vocal groups of all time, Pentatonix reimagine, reinvigorate, and redefine a cappella. Since emerging in 2011, the three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning and Daytime EMMY® Award-nominated vocal quintet—Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee—have reached unprecedented heights, toppling charts, selling 10 million albums worldwide, generating billions of streams, and performing everywhere from The White House and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to The Hollywood Bowl. Their catalog boasts back-to-back #1 albums on the Billboard 200, namely the gold-certified Pentatonix [2015] and platinum-certified A Pentatonix Christmas [2016]. Internationally, these albums performed equally as well with five albums being certified gold, platinum, or double platinum in Canada and ranking in the top 40 albums six times in New Zealand. Their single, “Hallelujah” also reached international acclaim as a platinum-certified single in Canada and gold-certified in Germany and Switzerland. They notably made history as “the first a cappella act to win ‘Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella’ at the GRAMMY ® Awards” in 2015 and 2016. A year later, they earned another GRAMMY® Award in the category “Best Country Duo/Group Performance” for their duet with Dolly Parton on her song “Jolene.”  Along the way, the collective also graced the stage of The Kennedy Center Honors for Tom Hanks, covering “That Thing You Do” as President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama watched from the crowd. Plus, they have collaborated with Kelly Clarkson, Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus, and Lindsey Stirling, to name a few. Beyond standout awards show and late-night television appearances, Pentatonix leapt onto the big screen with a cameo in the blockbuster Pitch Perfect 2 . Not to mention, they have supported organizations such as Make A Wish, Do it for the Love Foundation, and more. Following 2021’s Evergreen , which tallied over 100 million streams, they launched one of their biggest tours to date, Pentatonix: The Evergreen Christmas Tour . In 2022, it was announced that the group will be receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They are back to close out the year with more original music and touring.

GRAMMY-winning vocal group Pentatonix announced their plans for a full return to their pop a cappella thrones with a new album, PTX Presents: Top Pop Vol. 1 , duo out April 13. At the risk of overloading their devoted fans with joy, the group also announced a sprawling 39-date North American Tour kicking off June 12 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

After winning back-to-back-to-back GRAMMY Awards at the 57th , 58th , and 59th GRAMMY Awards , Pentatonix eased off the gas pedal long enough for Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying to pursue their pop-duo side project, Superfruit and Kristin Maldonado to prepare for her Broadway debut . In late 2017, Pentatonix returned, introducing a new face in the group with Matt Sallee taking over bass duties for a holiday tour and single release .

Meet 5 GRAMMY Nominees Who Started At GRAMMY U: From Boygenius Engineer Sarah Tudzin To Pentatonix’s Scott Hoying

For nearly 20 years, emerging music industry creatives have cycled through GRAMMY U, the Recording Academy’s program for young people aspiring to work in the music industry. Below, meet the five GRAMMY U alumni who are nominated at the 2024 GRAMMYs.

Cathryn Flores co-authored this article.

Since 2006, GRAMMY U has been dedicated to nurturing the next generation of music professionals by connecting aspiring members with the industry's brightest and most talented minds. With its recent membership expansion , GRAMMY U continues to grow and establish a diverse community of students and young professionals.

GRAMMY U members have the unique opportunity to collaborate with GRAMMY nominees and professionals across various sectors of the music industry, including affiliates of the Recording Academy’s Producers & Engineers Wing and Songwriters & Composers Wing . Annual programming includes the Mentorship Program , GRAMMY U Fall Summit , activations at GRAMMY Week , and the GRAMMY U Conference as well as dozens of local programs nationwide.

During their time at GRAMMY U, members get the chance to connect with their peers and receive hands-on experience. A significant number of program alumni continue their journey in the music industry as voting members of the Recording Academy, featured panelists at future GRAMMY U events, and mentors.

Many alumni go on to become GRAMMY nominees and winners themselves — and the 2024 GRAMMYs highlight their successes. At Music's Biggest Night, former GRAMMY U Members Sarah Tudzin, who engineered for boygenius , and Pentatonix co-founder Scott Hoying are nominated at the 66th GRAMMY Awards .

From songwriters to producers, read on to learn about the five current and former GRAMMY U members who are nominated for the 66th GRAMMY Awards.

Scott Hoying

Nominated work: Pentatonix - Holidays Around The World (Best Traditional Pop Album)

Pentatonix co-founder Scott Hoying is in the running for Best Pop Traditional Vocal Album for Holidays Around The World . Hoying previously took home a golden gramophone with his hit a capella group at the 2017 GRAMMYs for Best Country Duo/Group Performance with Dolly Parton for "Jolene."

"Being able to collaborate with so many incredible artists around the world was a fascinating process and was so fulfilling. This was truly an experience where we got to feel the universal language of music first-hand," Hoying says. "It is one of our favorite albums, and to see it recognized and honored in such an iconic way from our peers in the music industry is a dream."

Hoying joined GRAMMY U while he was a music major at the University of Southern California.

"The second I was eligible to be a GRAMMY U member, I signed up immediately. I remember feeling so excited to be a part of the GRAMMY foundation," Hoying recalls. "Signing up for GRAMMY U felt like the first step towards manifesting that vision board.

"Fast-forward 10 years, three GRAMMYs and five nominations [later], it feels surreal. I just feel like the luckiest person in the world and we are so honored," he says.

Sarah Tudzin

Nominated work: boygenius - the record (Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical)

Sarah Tudzin joined GRAMMY U in college to learn more about the GRAMMY process at a professional level. Since, her band illuminati hotties has opened for acts such as Death Cab For Cutie and Carly Rae Jepsen . This year, she secured her GRAMMY-nominated status as a producer and engineer for her work on boygenius ' hit debut album the record, which is nominated for Album Of The Year and Best Alternative Music Album.

Tudzin didn’t know what to expect when boygenius called her into the studio session, but found comfort in the fact that its members are both her friends and her heroes. The musician sees her nomination as a measure of huge accomplishment, but also says that this is only the beginning of it all.

"To be a witness to boygenius' meteoric rise is such an honor and I feel deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to work with them and with number one production wizard, Catherine Marks ," Tudzin says. "I spent so many years cutting my teeth as an assistant and engineer and I'm so proud to have a credit of this caliber."

Elyse Victoria Johnson

Nominated work: Stanley Brown feat. Hezekiah Walker, Kierra Sheard & Karen Clark Sheard - "God Is Good" (Best Gospel Performance/Song)

Current GRAMMY U member and first-time GRAMMY nominee Elyse Victoria Johnson is nominated in the category of Best Gospel Performance/Song for her songwriting contributions to Stanley Brown ’s "God Is Good." Elyse’s background as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist led her to pursue a music industry major at the State University of New York College at Oneonta, where she also served as a GRAMMY U Ambassador.

" It was a great experience serving as an advocate for the GRAMMY U program to increase student membership on my college campus," the 22 year old says. "Now, in 2023. I am a GRAMMY-nominated songwriter. Every experience has played a part in where I am today."

"God is Good" is an uplifting anthem that radiates a message of positivity in difficult times.

"‘God Is Good’ comes from the popular call & response saying, ‘God is good all the time & all the time, God is good.’ It’s such a fun, inspirational, uplifting bop!" she shares. "This reflects my progression as a songwriter/artist because it gave me the opportunity to grow as a creative… I am constantly learning and growing, and there’s never a time where I am not a student!"

Whitney Wolanin

Nominated work: Tyler Childers - "In Your Love" (Best Music Video)

As a GRAMMY U member at Vanderbilt University, Whitney Wolanin had no idea she would be working in film after college. A musician herself, Wolanin transitioned to producing and directing everything from commercials to music videos. Wolanin expressed her gratitude for getting to tell stories in different audio and visual mediums.

Wolanin worked as the line producer and a general producer on Tyler Childers' video for "In Your Love," which is nominated for Best Music Video. The song itself is also nominated for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance.

Wolanin believes that finding a strong team is crucial to keep everything running smoothly.

"Producing ‘In Your Love’ felt really important, both in terms of story and its broader implications to society," Wolanin says. "This specific love story is just so beautiful and needs to be told in country music. It felt special from the get-go and I hope it makes everyone cry, just like it does for me each time I watch it. "

Nominated work: AleMor - Beautiful Humans, Vol. 1 (Best Latin Pop Album)

Manu Beker’s musical journey has gone full circle with the Recording Academy. In 2022, he won GRAMMY U's Masterclass Contest with his song "Cliché" and met his future collaborator, AleMor , on that same day.

Beker contributed to AleMor’s Beautiful Humans Vol. 1 ., which is nominated for Best Latin Pop Album at the 66th GRAMMY Awards. Beker hopes his work shows that Latin music can take form in any sub-genre and should not be constrained to a singular style.

"A lot of people pigeonhole music in Spanish and think it has to sound like a cliché… that it has to sound folky or like salsa/cumbia," Beker says. "But I'm hoping more people will listen to albums like [ Beautiful Humans Vol. 1 ] and realize that Latin music is as varied and diverse as any other genre."

Beker recognizes the importance of constantly adapting within the industry and creating impactful connections with the artists he works with. He described the entire GRAMMY U experience with AleMor as surreal and hopes to continue making contributions within the Latin music community.

Wicked Broadway Show

20 Years Of 'Wicked': On This Day, The Culture-Shifting, GRAMMY-Winning Musical Premiered

Twenty years after its premiere on Broadway, the deliciously corrupted musical 'Wicked' is still going strong.

Twenty years ago, the Broadway-shaking musical 'Wicked' opened its doors in New York City — and the theatre world was never the same.

Based on Gregory Maguire's book Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West — itself influenced by L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz — the musical debuted on Broadway on Oct. 30, 2003, six months after it premiered in San Francisco, California on May 28. Two years later, the musical was honored by the world's leading society of music people; it won the golden gramophone for Best Musical Theatre Album at the 2005 GRAMMYs. Fifteen years and numberless inspired performances after its premiere, Ariana Grande , Ledisi and Adam Lambert as well as GRAMMY winners Pentatonix performed with original cast members Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth to celebrate 'Wicked,' in a performance dubbed the "Wicked 15 Anniversary Concert."

Also back in 2018, the play about the green witch named Elphaba also garnered a special called A Very Wicked Halloween , starring the aforementioned musical luminaries.

"The themes of the show, the love and friendship aspects," "Wicked" star Kristin Chenoweth told the San Francisco Chronicle at the time. "We can look at these two characters looking forward to seeing everything."

For Mitch Grassi from Pentatonix, it was a full-circle moment for him to perform in the special. "It's a full circle moment, we grew up with this show and the [album] kind of shaped us as performers," Grassi told Playbill .

** 'Wicked' is still on Broadway — and is about to be on the silver screen! On Nov. 27, 2024, Cynthia Erivo and Grande will star in Wicked: Part One , a film adaptation of the play. (The sequel, Part Two , is scheduled to release on Nov. 26, 2025.) **

And on the stage proper, the team behind 'Wicked' is plotting a special anniversary show at the Gershwin Theatre — and on Oct. 30, the anniversary proper, the Empire State Building will light up green in commemoration of the show.

On Halloween, the New York Public Library will hold a free panel discussion about the musical, featuring panelists in book writer Winnie Holzman, producer David Stone and composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz.

And after spooky season concludes, traveling iterations of the show will continue to roll on throughout the world — with a home base in London providing the (slightly altered) experience for Wicked fans in the United Kingdom.

Whether or not you're able to catch the film, these celebration shows, or just a good old performance, keep a little wickedness in your heart in tribute this Halloween!

GRAMMY Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Honors Hip-Hop's Greats While Accepting Best Rap Album GRAMMY For 'To Pimp a Butterfly' In 2016

Upon winning the GRAMMY for Best Rap Album for 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' Kendrick Lamar thanked those that helped him get to the stage, and the artists that blazed the trail for him.

Updated Friday Oct. 13, 2023 to include info about Kendrick Lamar's most recent GRAMMY wins, as of the 2023 GRAMMYs.

A GRAMMY veteran these days, Kendrick Lamar has won 17 GRAMMYs and has received 47 GRAMMY nominations overall. A sizable chunk of his trophies came from the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards in 2016, when he walked away with five — including his first-ever win in the Best Rap Album category.

This installment of GRAMMY Rewind turns back the clock to 2016, revisiting Lamar's acceptance speech upon winning Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly . Though Lamar was alone on stage, he made it clear that he wouldn't be at the top of his game without the help of a broad support system.

"First off, all glory to God, that's for sure," he said, kicking off a speech that went on to thank his parents, who he described as his "those who gave me the responsibility of knowing, of accepting the good with the bad."

Looking for more GRAMMYs news? The 2024 GRAMMY nominations are here!

He also extended his love and gratitude to his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and shouted out his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. Lamar specifically praised Top Dawg's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, for finding and developing raw talent that might not otherwise get the chance to pursue their musical dreams.

"We'd never forget that: Taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage, to be the best that they can be," Lamar — a Compton native himself — continued, leading into an impassioned conclusion spotlighting some of the cornerstone rap albums that came before To Pimp a Butterfly .

"Hip-hop. Ice Cube . This is for hip-hop," he said. "This is for Snoop Dogg , Doggystyle . This is for Illmatic , this is for Nas . We will live forever. Believe that."

To Pimp a Butterfly singles "Alright" and "These Walls" earned Lamar three more GRAMMYs that night, the former winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and the latter taking Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the song features Bilal , Anna Wise and Thundercat ). He also won Best Music Video for the remix of Taylor Swift 's "Bad Blood."

Lamar has since won Best Rap Album two more times, taking home the golden gramophone in 2018 for his blockbuster LP DAMN ., and in 2023 for his bold fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers .

Watch Lamar's full acceptance speech above, and check back at GRAMMY.com every Friday for more GRAMMY Rewind episodes.

Girl Groups Timeline Hero

The Evolution Of The Girl Group: How TLC, BLACKPINK, The Shirelles & More Have Elevated Female Expression

From the Supremes to the Spice Girls, take a deep dive into the history of girl groups — and how their songs, performance and vocal power changed pop culture.

For more than eight decades, girl groups have harmonized their way into the collective consciousness, bringing female empowerment to the forefront — and changing culture along the way.

Of course, girl groups have come in many forms: there's the family-friendly Andrew Sisters, the funk rock-infused Labelle, and the R&B-leaning Destiny's Child . As the construct of the girl group has evolved, so has their cultural impact — while acts like the Supremes helped push popular music in a more diverse direction in America, J-Pop and K-Pop groups have helped girl groups be viewed through a global lens in recent years.

What has tied all of these groups together is their infectious and inspirational records, which have encouraged women to express themselves and feel empowered in doing so. Groups like the Spice Girls and the Shangri-Las, for instance, have helped women express all sides of themselves, reminding the world that there is joy and beauty in contrast.

As Women's History Month nears its end, GRAMMY.com celebrates all of the powerful women who have been part of the girl group evolution. (To narrow the field, we characterize a girl group as acts with a minimum of three members and a focus on vocal performance; hence why you won't see bands like the Go-Gos or the Chicks on this list.)

Below, take a look at how girl groups have changed in both construct and impact for nearly 90 years — and counting — and listen to GRAMMY.com's official Girl Groups playlist on Amazon Music ,  Spotify ,  Apple Music , and Pandora .

Girl group timeline subhed 1930s/40s

Though women have no doubt sung together since the beginning of time, the formal concept of the girl group came sometime in the '20s or '30s, with the rise in popularity of tightly harmonizing family acts like the Boswell Sisters and the Hamilton Sisters (the latter of whom would become Three X Sisters). The groups really started to see a rise in popularity around the beginning of WWII — perhaps because the entrance of more women into the workforce opened peoples' minds to the idea of the pop girl group, or perhaps because the soldiers overseas sought comfort and mild excitement via the groups' smooth sounds and attractive looks.

The Andrews Sisters, who officially formed in 1937 as a Boswell Sisters tribute act, would become the most popular of the sister acts, riding tracks like "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," "Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me) " and "Beer Barrel Polka (Roll Out The Barrel)" straight to the top of the charts. They're considered one of the most successful girl groups of all time, selling an estimated 80 million records and counting. Other girl groups followed the Andrews' act, including the Dinning Sisters, who released " They Just Chopped Down The Old Apple Tree " as an answer to their rivals' hit.

Girl group timeline subhed 1950s

The Andrews Sisters continued to be popular well into the '50s, inspiring similar close harmony acts like the Chordettes, who found success with tracks like "Mr. Sandman" and "Lollipop," and the Lennon Sisters, who became a mainstay on "The Lawrence Welk Show."

Around the middle of the decade, girl groups started pulling a bit more from the doo-wop movement, with songs like the Bobbettes "Mr Lee" helping pave the way for a wave of all-Black girl groups to come. The Chantels — who had come up together singing in a choir — quickly followed with "Maybe," which solidified the genre's style with a blend of rock, pop, doo-wop that would act as a sonic template for years to come.

Girl group timeline subhed 1960s

In 1961, the Shirelles found quick success with tracks like "Tonight's The Night" and "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," which became the first girl group cut to go to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. The group would have five more hit singles throughout the decade, and inspired acts like the Marvelettes, whose "Please Mr. Postman" would become the first No. 1 single for Motown Records.

Keen to seize on that success, Motown invested heavily in creating more girl groups, crafting trios and quartets out of various singers that they might have previously eyed for solo work or even passed on signing. That kind of business-minded molding is what yielded Martha and the Vandellas, the Velvelettes, and a little act called the Supremes, who would go on to become the most successful American vocal group of all time, according to CNN . The success of the Motown acts — the majority of whom were all Black — was also a sign of American culture's increasing acceptance of the integration of popular music.

Having seen the success that Motown had in consciously crafting its girl groups, other producers and small, independent labels sought to capture some of that lightning in a bottle for themselves. The Philles label cashed in on the sound of the Crystals and the Ronettes, while Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller signed the Shangri-Las and the Dixie Cups to their Red Bird label. Tracks like the Shangri-Las' "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" offered a surprisingly real perspective on teen girl crushes, while   "Leader Of The Pack" helped bring female perspective to a subgenre of songs about macabre teenage tragedies previously dominated by all-male acts like Jan And Dean and Wayne Cochran And The C.C. Riders.

Girl group timeline subhed 1970s

First formed in the '60s as Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, Labelle pushed the genre out of the sock hop and into the nightclub, becoming one of the premiere girl groups of the '70s. Their funky, rock-infused singles were unlike anything girl group aficionados had heard before, and in 1974, the group captured America's heart with "Lady Marmalade," a slightly suggestive song that broke out of the discos and into the collective consciousness. Other acts originally formed in the '60s found similar success, like the Three Degrees, who had a number of hits, including the sunny and soothing "When Will I See You Again."

Sister Sledge also capitalized on the disco boom, crafting lasting hits like "We Are Family" and "He's The Greatest Dancer." The Pointer Sisters went through a rainbow of genres, including R&B (1973's funky "Yes We Can Can" ) and country (1974's "Fairytale," which won a GRAMMY for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal in 1975), before finding their biggest success at the beginning of the next decade with tracks like the sultry "Slow Hand" and the more frantic "I'm So Excited."

Girl group timeline subhed 1980s

Girl groups went through a bit of a lull in the '80s, as the culture trended toward hair metal and hip-hop. Some acts still managed to break through, capturing listeners' hearts with dance-friendly cuts imbued with Latin freestyle flair. Full of synths and syncopated percussion, freestyle burst out of clubs and parties in New York and Philadelphia, finding a particular hold amongst Hispanic and Italian-American audiences.

Miami's Exposé was one of the decade's biggest freestyle acts, blending girl group harmonies with synthetic sounds for hits like "Point Of No Return" and "Seasons Change." Two New York groups, Sweet Sensation and The Cover Girls, had freestyle success that bridged the '80s and '90s. Sweet Sensation's "Never Let You Go" tore up the dance charts, and while the Cover Girls' "Show Me" and "Because Of You" weren't quite as popular, they still hold a special place in the hearts of freestyle fans.

Girl group timeline subhed 1990s

Girl groups roared back in a big way in the '90s, thanks in part to the emergency of new jack swing and a renewed interest in R&B's smooth vocal stylings. En Vogue was one of the first groups to go big in the '90s, with debut single "Hold On" first hitting the Billboard charts in 1990. Their biggest tracks came later in the decade, with the powerful "Free Your Mind" and "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" showcasing the quartet's vocal range and character.

Two groups from Atlanta also came to prominence around the same time as En Vogue. First was the street-savvy quartet Xscape, who harnessed the sounds of 1993 with tracks like "Just Kickin' It."

TLC had a more dynamic arc, first bursting into the collective consciousness with the new jack swing-infused "Ooooooohh… On The TLC Tip," which featured three top 10 singles, including "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg." The group's baggy pants and hip-hop aesthetic pushed girl group boundaries, in part because its members actually acknowledged their sexual desires, as well as the need for everyone to have safe sex. Later in the decade, TLC would rise to even higher heights with tracks like "Waterfalls" and the GRAMMY-winning "No Scrubs," the latter of which was actually co-written by two members of Xscape.

Destiny's Child initially emerged from Houston in the late '90s as a quartet, though they'd later lose some members and gain new ones, ending up as a trio. While it was hard to ignore the sheer star power of Beyonce , the threesome did generally function as a group, producing a string of danceable earworms, including "No, No, No," and "Bills, Bills, Bills." By the time they disbanded in 2006, Destiny's Child sold tens of millions of records and earned three GRAMMY Awards (and a total of nine nominations).

Out west, Wilson Phillips ' Chyna Phillips, Wendy Wilson and Carnie Wilson were channeling the sounds of their respective parents, who had been members of the Beach Boys and the Mamas & The Papas . Their songs featured  vocal harmonies and were largely about emotional longing, pushing back against the dance and funk that ruled much of the radio dial throughout the '90s.

Girl groups were also gaining major traction in the U.K during the '90s, spurred by a boy band boom in the country around the same time. Two groups — All Saints and the Spice Girls — were actually assembled by managers, something that didn't help allay naysayers' concern that much of pop music at the time was wholly manufactured. (Another U.K. mainstay, Ireland's B*Witched, came together organically.)

Regardless, both All Saints and the Spice Girls found commercial success, with the latter becoming absolutely massive not just because of catchy pop romps like "Wannabe," but because of the quintet's singular personas and the strength of their "girl power" messaging. The Spice Girls even starred in their own movie, "Spice World," which came out at the height of Spice-mania in 1997 and drew instant comparisons to the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night."

Girl group timeline subhed 2000s

Girl groups continued to reign in the early part of the 2000s. A number of 2000s girl groups formed on television as part of reality programming, with U.K. sensation Girls Aloud forming on the ITV show "Popstars: The Rivals" and Danity Kane both forming and developing over three seasons of Sean Puffy Combs ' "Making The Band." TV acted as a great launching pad for these pop acts, as fans were often emotionally invested in the group's success from watching the show so when a new single dropped, they were quick to get on board.

Girls Aloud and Danity Kane — as well as their peers, like Dream, 3LW, and Blacque — made pop music that was sexy, confident, and larger than life, with expensive-looking music videos to match. The songs also often crossed over from pop to urban radio.

Another of the most successful (and sexiest) girl groups of the 2000s also formed in a fairly roundabout way. The Pussycat Dolls found success with tracks like "Don't Cha" and "Buttons," but the actual origin of the Pussycat Dolls name and brand came almost 15 years earlier when an L.A. based choreographer named Robin Antin launched a burlesque troupe. After her club events and dancers became more and more popular (even posing for Playboy ), she was urged by Interscope Records' Jimmy Iovine to attach the name to a pop group.

Antin recruited five singers who could hold a tune and looked the part, including Nicole Scherzinger — who initially got her start in Eden's Crush, another group formed on a TV show, the U.S. iteration of "Popstars" — and the Pussycat Dolls quickly strutted onto radio dials and Billboard charts with their catchy multi-tracked (and often risqué) hits.

Girl groups were also getting huge around the globe in the '00s, with Spain's Las Ketchup producing the insanely catchy pop ditty conveniently named "The Ketchup Song," Sweden's Play crossed over to commercial success in the American market, and the U.K.'s Atomic Kitten formed purely as a songwriting vehicle for Orchestral Maneuvers In the Dark's Andy McCluskey and Stuart Kershaw. Members of the latter would come and go throughout its career, but songs like "Whole Again" (which was also recorded by Play) have stood the test of time.

Though modern K-pop culture had begun in South Korea in the late '90s, it started to really pick up steam in the '00s, with both boy bands and girl groups benefiting from the surging Hallyu or Korean wave. One of those, Wonder Girls, found quick success in the late '00s with genre-spanning tracks like "Tell Me" and "Nobody," thanks in part to the pop act's ability to perform English versions of their songs while on tour with the Jonas Brothers.

Girl group timeline subhed 2010s

Two of the 2010s biggest girl groups also came from televised reality competition shows. Little Mix, a quartet, was formed on the U.K.'s "The X Factor" and came to redefine the girl group era in Britain, selling more than 60 million records and topping the charts with high octane singles like "Cannonball" and "Shout Out To My Ex."

Stateside, Fifth Harmony was birthed on "The X Factor," where all five members had competed individually the season before but failed to advance. But after producers brought them back to compete as a group, Fifth Harmony was born, with viewers picking the name and ultimately helping them take third place in the competition.

The quintet emerged from the show signed to judge Simon Cowell's record label, Syco, and like so many great girl groups before it, embarked on a tour of malls and talk shows before eventually releasing a pop record tinged with both hip-hop and R&B. Fans latched on to songs like "I'm In Love With A Monster" and "Work From Home," the trap-laced monster hit that has garnered billions of hits on YouTube since its release.

The K-pop wave also continued in the 2010s, with groups like Girls Generation and Twice , both of whom broke the mold of a traditional girl group by having eight and nine members, respectively. At the same time, a J-Pop act, AKB48, rose to popularity, with a structure girl groups hadn't seen before — it has 80 members in total, with the group being divided into different "teams" that members are elected into by rabid fans.  All three acts were literally and figuratively massive, selling tens of millions of highly produced bubblegum pop LPs and larger than life dance singles.

The success of K-pop girl groups shot to a new level when BLACKPINK entered the scene in 2016, forming after its members joined a girl group academy and underwent what amounts to girl group boot camp. The result is a fine-tuned musical machine that's produced pop hit after pop hit — including " Boombayah " and " DDU DU DDU DU " — as well as music videos that have been viewed billions of times online.

Spurred by the devotion of their fans (known as the BLINKs), BLACKPINK has also managed to rack up an impressive roster of accolades. They were the first Asian act to headline Coachella, the first female K-Pop artists on the cover of Billboard , and have amassed the most subscribers of any musical act on YouTube . But they're not the only female K-Pop act helping girl groups stay alive: Groups like Mamamoo and Red Velvet released hit after hit in the 2010s, and 2NE1 captured hearts everywhere with tracks like " Lonely " and " I Am The Best ." In 2012, 2NE1 set out on what many consider to be the first world tour by a K-pop girl group, visiting 11 cities in seven countries.

Girl group timeline subhed 2020s

A British girl group whose members pull from their individual cultures to create a unique, hip-hop influenced sound, Flo was also influenced by artists like Ciara and Amy Winehouse . Though they've only been together for a few years, their unique retro sound became almost instantly popular in the UK, with debut single " Cardboard Box " racking up almost a million views on YouTube within days of its release in early 2022. Other hit singles, like "Immature" and "Summertime" have followed.

Another thoroughly modern girl group, Boys World, was formed after managers found videos of five different women singing online and then contacted them to see if they wanted to team up. They said yes, launched a TikTok account , and moved into a house together in Los Angeles. Their thoroughly online approach to becoming a girl group has captivated audiences, along with their empowering anthems.

The K-Pop wave has continued to surge as well, with BLACKPINK headlining Coachella in 2023 and the quickly rising NewJeans earning the distinction of being the very first female Korean act to play Lollapalooza later this summer. Like so many girl groups before them, both acts continue to break boundaries and impact the culture at large, proving that the genre is as vital as ever.

While they may not be as abundant as in decades past, the girl group movement certainly hasn't shuttered. And with a diverse array of women still captivating audiences around the globe, girl groups will likely continue to spice up your life for years to come.

Pentatonix is an American a cappella pop/soul group from Arlington, Texas consisting of Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstie Maldonado, Avi Kapian and Kevin Olusola.

Pentatonix was formed when Martin High School friends, Kirsten “Kirstie” Maldonado, Mitch Grassi and Scott Hoying came together to enter a contest to meet the cast of the television show, “Glee.” Together they arranged a version of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” and even though they did not win the competition, they gained attention both locally and globally when they posted their version of the song on youtube.

After graduating from high school, the three members parted ways for separate colleges. While attending classes a University of Southern California, Hoying joined an a capella group called SoCal Vocals. It was during his time in this group that he heard about a television singing competition called “The Sing-Off.” This inspired Hoying to persuade Maldonado and Grassi to join together once again and enter the competition; however, the rules required a minimum of four people. This led to Hoying recruiting Kaplan, who had a highly recognized bass voice, to join the group as well. Eventually they also added Olusola, who had garnered attention through his youtube video of him simultaneously playing the cello and beatboxing. The group met the day before the competition and successfully auditioned for the show, eventually taking away the title.

After winning season three of the show, they were signed to Sony-owned Madison Gates Records. During the recording process, the group would post up some of the cover songs to their youtube account, some of which went on to go viral. By January 2012 they released their first EP entitled “PTX, Volume 1,” which sold 20,000 copies in its first week. They followed up with a Christmas album later that same year, and they made many television appearances to promote both albums, and went on tour for most of early 2013. They released a second EP while on tour, all while simultaneously posting more videos of their cover songs on youtube. The release of their third studio album, “PTX Vol. III,” which was released in fall 2014, debuted at Number 5 on the Billboard Top 200 album charts.

Live reviews

I saw them in Syracuse, NY only about two hours from my town. I had the VIP Meet and Greet and I was so excited that I was literally shaking. The opportunity to talk with and take selfie's individually with each of the band members was amazing. They sang a song for us off mic such amazing a cappella and it was so wonderful!! We had an opportunity to have each of them sign one item. I had downloaded a candid picture from a Facebook post printed it out and had them sign it. What made this even more special was Matt telling me that that was a picture taken at their first gig when he joined the band.

We got a chance to have a picture taken with all 5 of them. I have not gotten access to it yet but that too was amazing. Then they did a sound check on stage with all of us in the pit area, followed by a Q&A session. I had the best time. Then the whole concert was amazing! I would so recommend seeing them live, and if you can save up and do one of the VIPs please do. I saw them once before in Pennsylvania for Avi's next to last show in the pouring rain after a 6 Hour drive. Obviously I loved it enough to go again.

Hugs to the band! This was AMAZING!

If you need a pick me up and want original sound and lyrics then go see Pentatonix live in concert. They are so awesome and amazingly good. I cannot believe how many original songs can come out of one group. They sing from their heart and you can honestly tell. Being as there is only one female in the group, it is easy to hear how angelic her voice really is. The other guys are amazing as well. The harmonies fit together so well. Pentatonix is just a down to earth group that is not looking to go over the top. Their concert stage is nothing more than the average stage.

They can capture the attention of a crowd on the first note that they sing. I remember standing there and hearing that first note and being like WOW! Such big voices and beautiful melodies. I get chills just thinking about the music they make. I enjoy all of their music and especially like when they sing covers of other artists. I m so glad that I decided to see them that day because it gave e a whole new experience and it was well worth the money. I definitely think everyone needs to see Pentatonix because they are very original and will not let you down.

Pentatonix is the collective name of the Texan acapella musicians who rose to prominence after their victory on the third season of The Sing-Off. The platform not only won them a huge prize fund, but also global recognition and a readymade fanbase. Their upbeat, jovial personalities and pop based songs could make even the most cynical person smile and tap their feet as their personality and music is simply infectious.

Although they are exclusively a cover band, the group still has chance to showcase their specific vocal abilities due to the range of tracks covered. Tonight they include classic songs such as 'Hit The Road Jack' and juxtapose this with a Lorde mash up of 'Team' and 'Royals'. This shows versatility and skill and really demonstrates how the five musicians all work together onstage, reacting and listening to each other. The highlight is a note perfect rendition of 'We Are Young' by Fun which sounds textured, dramatic and solid despite being made up entirely of acapella vocal notes. It is a type of singing that is lesser known nowadays yet Pentatonix seem intent on bringing it back.

After missing out on tickets last year (Trix/Antwerp) I was able to book tickets this time.

I've been a fan ever since I saw them on The Sing Off and last night I finally got to see them live.

My daughter had been nagging to tag along, and although it was a school night and she's not allowed to go out, I thought Pentatonix was the perfect exception.

What an experience, the songs we've been singing along with in the car for so long, finally we heard them live! And what a show! I just loved loved loved it and my daughter is an ever bigger fan than before last night.

Eventhough they're not that well known over here (yet), the venue was pretty packed and everyone was singing along and screaming. What a night.

I hope they'll come back next year, we'll certainly buy tickets again.

Pentatonix were amazing. It was great how they included the ordinance in their performance by choosing people to go on stage with them, it's a shame I wasn't picked but hey, at least someone else had the chance to. The only problem I had with it was that I knew nothing about a meet and greet and I would of loved to meet them which is a real shame. They were amazing live, sounded just like they do on the CD. I also like how they included other things other than A Capella like Kevin beat boxing with his Chello. My favorate bit was when they all put their microphones down and sang without them. It made me feel closer to them in some wierd way. Overall AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING. Definatley worth going. ❤️

Disclaimer: I'm probably biased because Pentatonix is my FAVORITE group ever! But, with that being said, the show was fantastic. We did the VIP with Meet & Greet and Sound Check before the show and it was such an experience. The members of Pentatonix are so humble and down to Earth, and they were so sweet to my 7 year old who was very nervous about meeting her idols. THe show itself was beyond amazing. Their voices are like nothing else, and their is no speaker in the world that can substitute hearing Avi's bass voice live. Of course, they were all on point and their energy was impressive. ANd, being the day before Halloween, they were all dressed in costumes, which just added to the fun :)

Absolutely amazing show. Production was great from the sound to the lights. Would recommend everyone to experience this show. For new and old fans alike this is a truly memorable event that cannot be forgotten. For a longtime fan like myself I was very pleased with the setlist and openers for the show. The combination of Rachel Platten and a capella band Citizen queen made the overall vibe of the show very happy and inspiring. To sum it up, do yourself a favor and attend this concert and let it blow your mind with how great it is.

When I got to the concert I thought it would be like the other concerts but what I didn't know was that they were going to sing a few songs from their 4th album and I can't wait for it to come out. This concert was different, in a good way. They changed the songs up a little and they just make everything better and all the nice things they say on stage, especially having the honor of them saying that we were all like Beyonce. They are just so amazing that I have no words to describe how amazing they are.

As the air gets chillier and our clothes get cozier, we’re approaching a very important season: Pentatonix Season, of course! Our favorite acapella superstars make every holiday season so special for us with new music, festive content, and their annual Christmas tours. This year’s extravaganza is called A Christmas Spectacular! and we’re blown away by what we’ve seen so far!

The holidays have taken on a new meaning for all of us over the past couple of years. We cherish this time of year more than ever. However, we wanted to spread this message as far as possible. That’s why we decided to bridge the gap between cultures and genres in a way we never have before. Now, we can’t wait to see all of you on the road. Scott Hoying

Pentatonix always know how to put on a show like no other, and A Christmas Spectacular! is no exception. Whether you have tickets and wanna be prepared to sing along, or if you wanna just live vicariously through fan videos, we’ve gotchu! Here’s our rundown of the setlist and what to expect.

‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’

The show kicks off with a bang thanks to the intense ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen,’ which shows off Pentatonix’s strong group dynamic and how well they complement each other’s talents. We won’t rest until they get the recognition they deserve!

‘12 Days Of Christmas’

Would a Pentatonix Christmas show really be complete without ’12 Days of Christmas?’ We think not! If we could, we’d do nothing but listen to PTX’s take on this song for 12 days straight. You’re welcome to join us if you’d like.

‘Carol Of The Bells’

The harmonies on this song?? Immaculate. The live version of ‘Carol Of The Bells’ makes this track even more engaging and dynamic. It really transports us right to Christmas Eve and brings that holiday magic to life!

‘White Winter Hymnal’

After a little dance break that gives Pentatonix’s voices a well-deserved rest, they’re back and maybe better than ever with a Fleet Foxes cover! The fairytale references and snowy imagery on this song make it an absolute staple for any PTX Christmas playlist.

‘Mary, Did You Know?’

Of all the Christmas songs Pentatonix have released, we really think ‘Mary, Did You Know?’ is one of the best examples of their talent. Between the harmonies, the high notes, and how well Matt and Kevin keep it grounded, it blows us away. Every. Single. Time!

‘Little Drummer Boy’

Everything Pentatonix does deserves a drum roll, especially their rendition of ‘Little Drummer Boy!’ It’s become a staple of their live shows and will definitely go down as one of their most impressive performances.

‘Amazing Grace’

Honestly, we’re not sure what’s more amazing: Grace or how easily Pentatonix can move a crowd with this song. Whichever the answer is, we’ll happily watch every video of this performance we can possibly find!

‘What Christmas Means to Me’

There’s nothing quite like the serotonin we get from Stevie Wonder’s ‘What Christmas Means To Me,’ and that’s amplified when it’s Pentatonix singing it! It’s impossible to be sad while listening to this song, so press play next time you need a boost.

‘Hallelujah’

All we can say is “hallelujah” that Pentatonix’s version of ‘Hallelujah’ exists in this world! Every word, note, and harmony of this performance is absolutely breathtaking, and you can feel how powerful it is within just a few seconds.

‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’

If you told us that Pentatonix were the herald angels from this song, we wouldn’t be surprised. Their voices are just heavenly! They put such a stunning spin on a holiday classic and it wows us every time, without fail.

‘Joy To The World’

We’re sure we speak for all Pentaholics when we say PTX is constantly bringing joy to OUR world! Their version of ‘Joy To The World’ is so cheerful and puts us right into the festive spirit. You just can’t go wrong with it.

‘Feliz Navidad’

Pentatonix’s latest holiday album, Holidays Around the World , celebrates how different cultures celebrate Christmas and more, so we love that they included a taste of the project with ‘Feliz Navidad!’ Pretty much everyone knows this song, so it’s a feel-good singalong moment that’s guaranteed to make you smile.

‘Last Christmas’

‘Last Christmas’ we gave Pentatonix our heart, and we’ll continue to do so every Christmas as long as they’re still making music. If your holiday playlist isn’t at least 80% their songs, you’re doing it wrong! But hey, you can make it right this Christmas.

‘It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year’

In our humble opinion, Pentatonix Christmas tour season is the most wonderful time of the year. We’re blessed with so much content, so many backstage photos, and incredible performances just like this one! They really know how to keep us on our toes.

Kirstin, Mitch, and Scott founded PTX while going to high school together in Arlington, Texas, and we’re heading back to their roots as a trio with their performance of ‘River!’ Their voices flow together as effortlessly as water and we’re so thankful these three found each other to create one of our favorite groups of all time.

Calum Scott Is Lighting Up Our Hearts With ‘Lighthouse’

‘evergreen’ with a girl named tom.

Pentatonix aren’t traveling solo this tour – they’re bringing along the incredible group A Girl Named Tom, who you may have seen on The Voice! This trio is so talented and we love that PTX invite them onstage for a reimagined version of ‘Evergreen’ every night.

‘Star On Top’

Hearing ‘Star On Top’ was like the star on top of the metaphorical Christmas tree that is this tour’s setlist! This song and performance are nothing short of stellar, and PTX really gets to shine during this number.

‘Winter Wonderland’

In the meadow, we can build a snow-bee, and pretend that he is Matt Sallee… just kidding! Maybe. PTX really create an immersive wonderland with every show they put on for us, so ‘Winter Wonderland’ is a natural choice to make the setlist.

‘I Saw Three Ships’

They may have seen three ships, but we saw five of the most talented vocalists of our generation coming together for one incredible performance. The snaps making the rhythm were such a fun detail and made an amazing part of the show even more memorable!

‘Joyful Joyful’

According to fandom’s leading scientists, it’s physically impossible not to feel cheerful while listening to ‘Joyful, Joyful.’ The vibes are just immaculate and really show what light PTX bring to the world! Keep shining like this, besties.

‘Silent Night’

Pentaholics, we have to band together and make sure no night of A Christmas Spectacular! is a ‘Silent Night.’ We need to be cheering for them like we’ve never cheered in our lives! Need proof? Just watch the ‘Silent Night’ performance and get ready for their vocals to take your breath away.

‘Kid On Christmas’

The last song of any Penatonix concert is bound to make us at least a little sad, but we can’t be that upset when we hear ‘Kid on Christmas.’ It makes US feel like we’re a kid on Christmas and PTX just delivered everything we asked Santa for, including that pony we asked for when we were five.

Do you have your tickets to A Christmas Spectacular! yet? If not, grab them right here and let us know what show you’re going to! Let’s chat on Facebook , Instagram , and Twitter , or even Discord if you prefer. And for more PTX content to hold you over until your show, click here .
