White Beach is a popular tourist destination in Puerto Galera and many visitors come here every year.

As the name suggests, it is a long stretch of white sand and crystal blue water that is great for swimming and other water sports like jet skiing, kayaking, and banana boat rides.

It has many resorts and accommodations that will fit your budget - from luxurious 5-star hotels to mid-range resorts up to simple budget accommodations that will give you value for money.

You will also find a multitude of bars, shops, and restaurants near the shoreline, so it can get pretty crowded especially during the months of April to June, where many Filipino schoolchildren go on summer vacation and travel here with their families.

Talipanan Beach is a secluded spot with powdery white sands and calm waters that make it the perfect place to stay for a quiet, relaxing time.

Talipanan beach in Puerto Galera

You may also visit Talipanan Falls, which will take you about 30 minutes of trekking. While on the way, you might be interested in visiting Mangyan Village, where you can buy cultural products and souvenirs to take home with you.

puerto galera tamaraw falls

If you’re the type of person who prefers hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the island, look no further than Tamaraw Falls.

This twin waterfall is about 3 stories high and runs beneath a bridge and then flows towards two man-made swimming pools, where you can take a refreshing dip.

Tamaraw Falls is said to have the cleanest body of water in the province, so don’t forget your swimming gear to really enjoy the experience.

There are nipa huts around where you can have a barbecue or eat your packed lunch against a refreshing, nature-filled backdrop.

There are small stores that sell refreshments and beverages as well as snacks for those who did not bring their own.

Island or beach hopping destinations typically cover pocket beaches that include San Antonio Island (also known as Medio Island), Haligi beach and Sandbar Island (located in Boquete or Paniquian Island) and Bayanan beach.

San Antonio or Medio Island is well known for a stretch of white sand that the locals call Long Beach.

Island Hopping in Puerto Galera

You can also visit the underwater cave and go snorkeling at Coral Garden to swim with colorful fishes and see large coral plates.

You can also see giant clams in their natural habitat. When the waves are not too strong, you can also go visit an underwater cave in Long Beach, where you can swim in shallow crystal clear water and enjoy the beautiful rock formations.

Haligi beach in Boquete or Paniquian Island is another quiet island located on Muelle Bay where you can relax and enjoy the calm crystal blue water.

Swim with the fishes and go snorkeling to have a closer look at the marine life there.

If you head south of the island you will find Sandbar Island, a small strip of land connecting Boquete Island to the mainland of Mindoro island. It is also sometimes called Elizabeth’s Hideaway.

Further west is Bayanan beach, which features a concave-shaped shoreline that gives it calm blue waters, creating the perfect conditions for leisurely swimming and snorkeling. It is located just beside the White Beach.

Aninuan Falls is located at the foot of Mt. Malasimbo, and there is an entrance fee.

Talipanan Falls in Puerto Galera

Different Puerto Galera activities can be enjoyed here for a fee, which includes a water park, jet skiing, kayaking, snorkeling, banana boat ride, and others.

Another must-see natural wonder you should include in your list of Puerto Galera activities is a trip to the lesser-known but equally enchanting Tukuran Falls.

It features charming rock formations and refreshing clear water that you can’t resist but dive into!

When you swim underneath the falls and the water from above hits your shoulders, it’s like having a free back massage from Mother Nature.

One of the most unforgettable and unique experiences you should try here is the carabao (water buffalo) ride where a carabao pulls a wagon enough to fit 6 people.

This will take you through the shallow river while you feast your eyes on the lush tropical paradise on your way to the falls.

Sabang Beach is one of the first areas in Puerto Galera to transform into a major tourist attraction and is well-known to foreigners.

The Big La Laguna Beach and Small La Laguna Beach can be found in Sabang. Sabang Beach is more well-known for its diving sites, lively nightlife, and numerous shopping options.

If you’re looking for another tried and tested alcoholic drink aside from a bottle of local fave San Miguel Pale Pilsen, try the one that made White Beach famous - the Mindoro Sling.

It’s a cherry red cocktail of rum, grenadine syrup, sprite and fruit juices that can pack quite a punch, so be careful not to drink too much of it if you don’t want a hangover the next day.

You can order this at almost any bar along the beach, but the pitcher at Mikko’s Bar is said to be one of the best ones to try.

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL GUIDE with Budget Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

If one would condense my growth as a beach chaser into the life span of a butterfly, Puerto Galera would be somewhere in the caterpillar stage. Back when I was not yet capable of flying, when Boracay, Palawan and the Maldives filled my flights of fancy, I had my eyes on places that was a little bit more realistic. First, I wanted to just hit the beach, a nearby beach, any beach. Then, I wanted to go farther, ride a boat, and set foot in an island. I always had a destination in mind — Puerto Galera.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING PUERTO GALERA

Even before the colonial era, Puerto Galera has always been a busy port area because it is a good natural shelter for ships and boats. In 1570, the Spaniards arrived in Batangas and later crossed the Verde Island Passage to this coastal settlement. They named it Puerto Galera or Port of Galleons.

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

Today, Puerto Galera is a first class municipality in Oriental Mindoro, about 130 km south of Manila. Although occupying the northernmost tip of another island (Mindoro Island), it can be easily reached from Luzon. This accessibility from the capital and CALABARZON, the country’s most populous region, made it one of the most popular beach destination for decades.

Puerto Galera faces the Verde Island Passage, which is described by a 2007 Smithsonian Institute study as the “center of the center” of the world’s marine biodiversity citing the high concentration of marine species. In 1973, it was declared a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve.

Here are more useful bits about Puerto Galera.

  • Location: Oriental Mindoro, Philippines.
  • Languages: Iraya and Tagalog. But most residents, especially tourism workers, can communicate in English too.
  • Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 is around USD 1.90, EUR 1.69, SGD 2.57 (as of May 2019).
  • Modes of payment: CASH, primarily. Some establishments accept credit cards, but bring cash to be safe.

WHERE TO STAY IN PUERTO GALERA

Puerto Galera’s jagged coastline is hemmed by over a dozen fair-sand-filled coves. Of all these beaches, these three are the most ideal places to stay for tourists:

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

  • White Beach. Puerto Galera’s most popular beach. This is Galera’s answer to Boracay’s White Beach. (And yep, they bear the same name.) This is where most of the tourism action happens. You’ll find a wide array of lodging and dining options here. Nightlife is also here.
  • Aninuan Beach. Located just next to White Beach but this is much more tamed and quiet. This is a good place to stay if you’re after a more relaxing stay but want easy access to White Beach.
  • Sabang Beach. A little bit detached from the first two coves, but it also harbors lots of accommodations. This is a great base for divers because of the number of dive resorts.

How to get to puerto galera.

The cheapest and most usual way to reach Puerto Galera from Manila is via Batangas. From Batangas Pier, you will need to catch a ferry to either of the two ports in Puerto Galera. Balatero Port is closer to White Beach and Aninuan Beach, while Muelle Port is closer to Sabang.

  • Head to a JAM Liner bus terminal. There’s one in Cubao and another in LRT Buendia area.
  • Catch a bus bound for Batangas Pier. Some buses pass through and make several stops in Sto. Tomas and Tanauan. If you want a quick journey, board a bus with the CALABARZON sign. This means that the bus will be taking the STAR Tollway, which bypasses most towns and cities between SLEX and Batangas City. Travel time is 2-3 hours. Fare is P197 if you’re coming from Buendia or P207 from Cubao. See bus schedule in the next section below.
  • Get off at Batangas Pier. You can also tell the conductor that you plan to go to Puerto Galera so he knows where to drop you off.
  • Upon arrival at Batangas Pier, head straight to the ticket counters. You may be approached by touts saying that there are no public ferries to Puerto Galera that day. DON’T BELIEVE THEM. They’re just trying to get you to charter an expensive private boat. Walk straight to the ticketing counters.
  • Purchase tickets to Puerto Galera. You may choose a roro or a fastcraft. You can find the schedule as of April 2019 here . Fare: P300.
  • Pay the Batangas Pier terminal fee. P30 per person.
  • Board your booked ferry. Travel time: 55-100 minutes, depending on the type of vessel.
  • At Balatero or Muelle Port, pay the environmental fee. P50 per person. Balatero Pier also collects an additional P20 terminal fee.
  • Ride a tricycle to your resort. If your resort is within short distance, fare is P200 per trip or P50 per person (if you’re a group).

MANILA TO BATANGAS BUS SCHEDULE

Here’s the schedule of Jam Liner buses as of May 2019.

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

BATANGAS PIER TO PUERTO GALERA SCHEDULE

You can board a roro, a semi-fastcraft, or a fastcraft to Muelle Port or Balatero Port.

There used to be outrigger boats that carry passengers straight to White Beach or Sabang Beach. But during our last trip to Puerto Galera, we didn’t see any outrigger boats to Puerto Galera. The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) had plans of phasing out wooden-hulled boats last year, but I’m not sure if they have implemented this already.

For the schedule of authorized ferries, you may refer to this: BATANGAS-PUERTO GALERA TIMETABLE .

HOW TO GET AROUND PUERTO GALERA

By tricycle.

The jeepney is the cheapest mode of transportation in Puerto Galera. However, as in any other place in the country, jeepneys follow a fixed route and tentative schedules. If you want better control of your time, the tricycle is better.

For short distances, most tricycle drivers charge P150-200 per ride (good for 3 pax). If you’re a group, that’s fine, but it’s a pain on the pockets if you’re traveling solo. A friend said that this is the tourist rate and that it is much lower for locals. I don’t know what the local rate is. However, for budgeting purposes, you can assume that it’s P200 per trip so you won’t go under.

You can also charter a tricycle to take you on a tour and see inland attractions like Tamaraw Falls, Virgin Beach, Mangyan Village, Infinity Farm and others for P800 (good for 3 pax).

By Motorcycle

If you have a driver’s license and you know how to drive a motorcycle, you can rent one and explore the town freely on your own. Rates vary depending on the type of motorcycle and the shop, but the standard rate is P400 per day.

If you choose to travel on two wheels, take extra care. Always wear a helmet even if many of the locals you see don’t.

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

To get to some islands and other coves, chartering a boat is the way to go. Here are the boat rates for trips from Muelle Port as of May 2019. A boat can usually accommodate up to 6 pax.

  • Sandbar: P200 one-way, P400 round trip
  • Buri Beach: P200 one-way, P400 round trip

Here is the new ferry schedule. https://i.imgur.com/KAF0EUl.jpg Buy a round trip ferry ticket in Batangas to avoid a fully booked ferry on your return trip to Batangas. Returning on a Sunday without reserving a ticket can leave you stranded with no options from Muelle or Balatero. You will have to go to Calapan to return to Batangas.

17 Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Puerto Galera

Table of Contents

P uerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro is a highly recommended place to visit for a vacation, both with a group of people or alone. It’s located in the north-westernmost part of Oriental Mindoro, and its coves are famous for protecting boats and ships from seasonal typhoons. Puerto Galera means “The Port of Galleons,” named so by the first Spanish settlers because of its port’s convenient location to shelter ships or galleons from bad weather.

Best Things to Do in Puerto Galer

Puerto Galera is now known for its beautiful white pockets of beaches and rich coral and marine life and is visited by locals and foreign travelers to experience its natural attractions. Thinking of visiting this hidden paradise? Here are some of the best things to do in Puerto Galera.

Have Fun at White Beach

White Beach is undisputedly the most popular beach and location in Puerto Galera. White Beach has stunning white sand, cerulean waters, rich marine life, and coral reefs off its coast, per the beach’s name.

Enjoy the sand and water during the day while partying all night at the beachside establishments. Most of the popular resorts and restaurants are located at White Beach. It’s also a popular spot for locals to hold music festivals and concerts, and because of its unspoiled marine life, its waters are also an excellent spot for snorkeling and diving.

Island Hopping

Island Hopping in Puerto Galera

Definitely one of the best activities in Puerto Galera. Many local travel agencies and tour operators offer island hopping tours in town, especially if you’re in White Beach. They’ll usually take you to less crowded beaches on secluded islands nearby. This usually includes Haligi Beach, Bayanan Beach, Sandbar Island, and Coral Garden, each with a unique experience.

Travelers will get a taste of the best unspoiled white sand beaches and snorkeling sights in the region. If you want to see more, you can make additional payments to your guide to take you to nearby locations not included in the island hopping tour package.

Visit the Iraya Mangyan Village

Mangyan Iraya Tribe weaving Nito Plates

Puerto Galera is home to the local tribe called Iraya Mangyan, the indigenous group that originally lived on the coasts but withdrew into the mountains when the Spaniards arrived. Today, they live peacefully at the Iraya Mangyan Village at the foot of Mt. Malasimbo, nine km away from the center of town.

People can come and visit this unique village and admire the Iraya Mangyan’s culture. Buy crafts and souvenirs intricately made by the villagers from local nito vines to support local artisans.

Experience Eco-Adventure at Puerto Galera Adventure and Recreational Ecopark

View from Puerto Galera Adventure and Recreational Ecopark

While visiting the Iraya Mangyan Village, head further up Mt. Malasimbo to partake in a fun eco-adventure experience at Puerta Galera Adventure and Recreational Ecopark. The recreational eco-park is just on top of the hills of Mt. Malasimbo, giving a great view of the mountain’s rainforest, Puerto Galera, and the gorgeous coastline beyond.

Of course, visitors can partake in recreational activities such as cargo net climb, hanging bridge, and a 600-meter cable zipline.

Peek at the Underwater Cave in Puerto Galera

Puerto Galera Underwater Cave

One of Puerto Galera’s highlights is its underwater attractions, specifically the underwater cave at San Antonio Island in Coral Garden. Travelers can access this beautiful natural attraction by commissioning fishermen to take them to the island or joining an island-hopping tour with a stop on San Antonio Island.

Tourists can get a chance to see giant clams and vast plates of corals and swim in the underwater cave’s emerald pool.

Admire the Sunset

Sunset in Puerto Galera

Sunsets at Puerto Galera are probably some of the best in the world. Beachgoers will get a treat every sunset as the sun goes over the horizon and seemingly disappears under the sea. Travelers will practically get this gorgeous view of the sunset from any point on the island.

Relax at Encenada Beach Resort

Encenada Resort

If you want to spend a few days in a quiet place by the beach, the Encenada Beach Resort is the ideal resort in Puerto Galera. The resort is beachside with plenty of rooms and cottages with a full view of the white sand and waters.

The resort is decorated with rustic local furnishing made of local materials and an in-house restaurant. Relax on their private beach or get a boat ride to a nearby snorkeling sight.

Visit Tamaraw Falls

Tamaraw Falls comprises twin waterfalls three stories high that are said to be the province’s cleanest waters. It’s a 30-minute ride from the town center near the West Nautical Highway. Visitors must briefly hike up a paved zigzag path to reach the waterfall. The Tamaraw Falls flows directly to two manmade pools where visitors can take a refreshing dip after their short hike.

Find Souvenirs at Muelle Port

Muelle Port is one of the four ports in Puerta Galera and is the busiest, as it serves as the main port for ferries coming in and out of the municipality. With thousands of visitors coming in and out of Mueller Port daily, locals established several shops selling their local crafts and wares, with unique shops selling unique trinkets. Visitors can find unique souvenirs to bring to their loved ones.

Take a Sip of Mindoro Sling

Mindoro Sling photo by Cesar Sangalang via Flickr CC

As the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” so while in Puerto Galera, take a sip of the famous cocktail Mindoro Sling, named after the island. This local cocktail was invented on the island and quickly became famous for its sweet, fruity taste to the locals. This alcoholic drink is popularized at a local bar called Mikko’s Bar to the point where most establishments have it on their menu.

Visit Tukuran Falls

Tukuran Falls

Tukuran Falls is called the “Hidden Paradise” by locals because of its location in the Calsapa village, 45 minutes south of Puerto Galera. Travelers need to hire a vehicle to reach the fall’s trailhead. From there, travelers must pay for a guide to take them through the 30-minute trail to the falls.

Local carabao owners can be hired by a small group of people. The adventure is all worth it as the beautiful cascades of the falls through emerald swimming holes are quite the sight and great for taking a dip.

Discover Talipanan Beach

Talipanan Beach Puerto Galera photo via FB Page

One of the best lesser-known attractions, Talipanan Beach, is a beautiful stretch of powdery white sand beach with calm turquoise waters without the crowds. The beach is near the Iraya Mangyan Village, where interested visitors can hire a guide to take them directly to Talipanan Beach for a side trip. It’s the perfect place to truly relax and unwind. As a side trip within a side trip, visit the nearby Talipanan Falls.

Go to Aninuan Beach

Aninuan Beach by Andy Maluche via Flickr CC

Aninuan Beach is an excellent alternative to the more famous White Beach. The white sands and amazing cerulean waters are still there but with fewer crowds and tourists.

Plus, it’s just minutes away from White Breach via vehicle. Aninuan Beach is a top-rated beach for couples, families, and teenagers to relax because of its more romantic atmosphere. It’s also quite close to Talipanan and serves as a getaway.

Relax at Haligi Beach

People can reach Haligi Beach through island hopping tours, as mentioned above. The beautiful white sand beach is on Boquete or Paniquian Island, just off Muelle Bay. Visitors will instantly feel relaxed on the quiet beach or swim in its calm blue waters. They can even snorkel and interact with the rich marine life off its shore.

Get a Henna Tattoo

Get a Henna Tattoo

Plenty of shops along the beaches of Puerto Galera offer henna tattoo commissions, especially on the more popular spots like White Beach. Prices depend on how big and intricate the designs are, but people can haggle and negotiate to get their body art done by these talented artists.

Get a Massage by the Beach

Massage by the Beach photo via FB Page

Lastly, one of the best things to do on a tropical and paradise-like island is to get a massage by the beach. It’s the ultimate form of relaxation with a fantastic backdrop of calm blue waters. Many resorts and even beachside shops offer different kinds of massage to visitors, and it’s a highly recommended thing to do on this list.

6 Tourist Spots for Your PUERTO GALERA ITINERARY

puerto galera oriental mindoro tourist spot

Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro is a famous beach destination because of its accessibility from Metro Manila and nearby cities. You don’t have to book a flight to reach it. You can go on a whim or leave just before the weekend and have more than enough time to make it back to work by Monday. It also attracts party-goers looking for a good time by the beach. You can easily reach Puerto Galera by bus and boat.

Puerto Galera means “port of galleons”. It got this moniker because it was a safe destination for ships to dock when the Spaniards established one of the oldest settlements by missionaries in the region. This destination has plenty to offer tourists looking for fun things to do and places to visit. Here are some to consider adding to your itinerary.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

You will find sunbathers and swimmers, and beachgoers doing all sorts of activities. Rent equipment such as a banana boat, jet ski, and others to enjoy the day. The beach comes alive at night with party-goers going to the bars, grills, and restaurants lining the shore.

Best time to visit Puerto Galera is during the summer season and off-shoulder season.  Summer season is from April to May. And the off-shoulder season before the summer, around late January to March is also a good time to visit because it’s not yet crowded especially if you’re going on a weekday.

GETTING AROUND PUERTO GALERA

PUERTO GALERA ITINERARY BY TOUR PACKAGE

Jeepneys roam the roads of Puerto Galera, and they can take you to nearby towns. However, schedule may be intermittent and usually the jeep is full. I haven’t tried exploring Puerto Galera by jeepney yet, so I can’t say much about it. But it is possible to do DIY tour of Puerto Galera.

  BY TRICYCLE TOUR

This is the most popular option for travelers on a budget. It’s hassle-free compared to doing DIY tour of Puerto Galera. You just talk to a tricycle driver and rent the tricycle (with driver) to tour you around Puerto Galera. They have the usual tourist spots on the Puerto Galera itinerary, check more details under the Puerto Galera Land Tour option 2 below.

  BY TOUR PACKAGE

Another hassle-free option to tour Puerto Galera is by tour package. They usually use van or multicabs for the land tour. See more details under Puerto Galera Land Tour Option 3.

If you opt to book a tour package for a hassle-free trip in Puerto Galera, you may contact Sir Noli of NDM Travel Connections, the tour operator who arranged our recent island hopping, snorkeling tour, and land tour.

4.PUERTO GALERA DIVING

PUERTO GALERA DIVING

Puerto Galera is dubbed as the Diving Capital of the Philippines. Though I haven’t really tried diving yet in Puerto Galera, I can tell from our snorkeling trip with the abundance of its marine life even in shallow waters that this must be a diver’s paradise. Dive resorts abound in Sabang Beach in Puerto Galera. If you’re traveling there to primarily dive, Sabang is the place to go.

You can learn to dive in Puerto Galera. There’s a lot of dive resorts in Sabang that offer dive courses, you can book in advance through the link below. And you can also do fun dives in Puerto Galera.

5.PUERTO GALERA WATER ACTIVITIES (WHITE BEACH)

White Beach in Puerto Galera is oozing with water activities that will keep you entertained by day. To give you an idea, here’s a list of the usual water activities in Puerto Galera prices/rates:

6.PUERTO GALERA NIGHT LIFE

PUERTO GALERA NIGHT LIFE

Puerto Galera is known for its nightlife particularly in White Beach and Sabang. As for the bars in White Beach, it’s more family-oriented compared to Sabang, which is more focused on the girly bar scene. The main strip of White Beach is lined up with bars, restaurants, souvenir shops, and tattoo shops. Haven’t really tried the night life in Puerto Galera because last time we were there, I was so tired from our tour, I slept. LOL When I got the notification that the Mayor already dropped by our hotel to fetch us for the night life experience in Puerto Galera, it was too late. They left already, and I thought the bar was far, didn’t realize it was a mere 5 minute walk from our hotel. So, no, I haven’t tried the famous Mindoro Sling yet, even though it was already my 2 nd time in Puerto Galera. Mindoro Sling is a popular cocktail drink in Puerto Galera that is made of Rhum, mango juice, orange juice, Sprite, and grenadine syrup and served with apple slices. You can order this from most bars in Puerto Galera. There are also bars near Muelle Bay and around the Población.

  PUERTO GALERA SIDE TRIPS

Aside from the popular tourist spots in Puerto Galera, there are also other equally charming tourist attractions in other areas of Oriental Mindoro. Some can be done as a day tour from Puerto Galera or Calapan. Here are some places we visited while we were in Oriental Mindoro:

1.INFINITY FARM

Just 1.5 hours away from Puerto galera, Infinity Farm Resort is a nature resort in Baco, Oriental Mindoro, one of my favorite stops during our Oriental Mindoro trip. I was stunned by its emerald green; cascading waterfall flowing to natural  swimming pools that is surrounded by towering trees and greeneries flowing. Good place to just swim and relax.

PUERTO GALERA TRAVEL REMINDERS

  • Stack up cash (Philippine currency) before heading to Puerto Galera, there are ATMs in town.  Almost everything is on cash basis here.
  • As in most beaches, sea urchins are present in snorkeling sites, so wear aqua shoes or full-foot fins    when snorkeling and please do not step on corals.
  • Bring a dry bag to protect your cameras and waterproof pouch for your phone. Or much better if you just bring an underwater camera or action camera for snorkeling and other water sports.
  • If you are traveling solo to Puerto Galera and you want to do the island-hopping tour but you don’t want to spend that much for the boat, try to schedule your trip on a weekend and approach other travelers (preferably those in groups) to join their island hopping and just share the expenses.
