As a cruise ship passenger, you'll be arriving at the Ann E. Abramson Marine Facility, or the Frederiksted Pier as the locals call it. Located in the heart of Frederiksted, is the only cruise ship port on St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.  ​ The pier is a popular destination for scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, and much more.  However, access to the pier is restricted when there is a cruise ship in port, and only ship passengers and crew are allowed onto the pier. Snorkeling, scuba diving, and swimming around the pier are not allowed when there is a ship docked both for the public's safety and for the security of the ship.

As you disembark, you'll find shopping, restaurants, tour operators and attractions within walking distance. You'll also find ground transportation and tours are available from the pier to historical sites, beaches, and other excursions. We recommend you book your transportation and tours in advance as many fill up when a cruise ship is in port.

St. Croix is known for our world class scuba diving, but here you can also enjoy sailing, snorkeling, sport fishing, kayaking, and lots of different water sports. Plus, no visit to St. Croix is complete without a trip to Buck Island! On land, everything from golf to horseback riding can be found here on St. Croix. St. Croix is the largest of the three US Virgin Islands and as a US Territory, the official language is English, and the currency used is the US dollar. The locals on St. Croix are called Crucians, sometimes spelled ‘Cruzan’. Crucians are very friendly, but are reserved people. Behavior that is loud and boisterous is often times frowned upon. A smile and a greeting such as ‘good evening’ will surely help you fit in. 

The US Virgin Islands are part of the Antilles chain which separates the Caribbean and Atlantic. St. Croix is 28 miles long and 7 miles wide. This intriguing jewel lies 17°45′ North latitude and 64°45′ West longitude and is considered to be one of the most beautiful resort areas in the Caribbean. Beaches In St Croix : Twin City

Frederiksted beach :.

Frederiksted Beach is next to the old fort (so much so it’s occasionally called Fort Frederik Beach) and the town’s pier. The surroundings make it a wonderful place to swim near the urban region.

Resting on the coast, under a shady tree, you can listen to Caribbean music from regional restaurants and bars. You are never far from a tasty local meal or a chilling drink.

Like multiple seasides here, the beach is steeply shelving, with a rocky base in some areas. Beach shoes are a great idea to support you in stepping in or out of the water.

Under the tranquil water, swimmers or snorkelers will see plenty of life, including beautiful seahorses, angelfish, or possibly an octopus. You may also be fortunate to discover some sea glass or “Chaney”.

Visiting the beach is certainly among the most lovely things to do in St. Croix. You will also see artists selling jewelry created from up cycled elements in the garden opposite the coast.

Rainbow Beach : Best Beaches In St Croix

It’s a traditional Caribbean beach found nearly 2 km away from the Frederiksted Pier on St. Croix’s West End. This end of the island is more relaxed and picturesque, making for excellent conditions to relish any beach.

Rainbow Beach is all about unwinding around in a sun lounger, maybe satisfying in a snorkeling spot. If you desire to burn a few calories, there’s also volleyball and paddle boarding.

The focus of the coast is Rhythms beach restaurant/bar, where you can relish a tropical beverage and hear music—sometimes live. You will encounter other tourists and a few locals over a pina colada, a fish taco, or a grouper sandwich.

You can lease everything you may require here, from snorkels to loungers. Bring water shoes, as a few sharp rocks are on the seafloor, particularly toward both ends.

Those rocks offer the fish lots of hiding places, but it’s delightful to find them. The seaside is narrow but has deep sand and a beautiful vista out over the blue Caribbean water, setting it as one of the finest St. Croix beaches for photographers.

Being just about a mile from Frederiksted beach, arriving on foot or by taxi is quick. That makes it extremely famous and more pleasurable on Sundays when shops are shut, but it’s much more peaceful during the week.

Sandy Point Beach

Another coast in a covered location, this West End spectacle is a portion of Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge. The beach is located 7 km away from the cruise port.

With no facilities and shade, it’s an unspoiled natural treasure that draws fewer tourists than other shores nearby.

Adding to its upscale feel, the coast shuts entirely from April through August, the prime nesting period for the threatened leatherback turtle. A saltwater lagoon dotted with mangrove trees is also a portion of the refuge as a shelter for over a hundred bird species.

As well as watching for birds or potentially swimming with rays and turtles, you can enjoy the most extended coast in the US Virgin Islands, over 2 miles from end to end.

Sandy Point, which may appear familiar from appearances in movies, and advertising, is a photographer’s desire. Walkers will also enjoy strolling among its white sands, green mangroves, blue ocean, and bird-packed lagoon.

If you desire to sunbathe, carry some shade, such as a parasol or a large hat. Wearing reef-safe sunscreen will also aid you in doing your part in nature protection.

Cane Bay Beach

Cane Bay, found just 11 km from the Frederiksted pier, has wide appeal among the most famous beachfront along the north coast of St. Croix. It’s home to excellent snorkeling and diving, with a wide option of amenities that contains multiple fine bars or restaurants.

The first stop for any traveler must be the Cane Bay Dive Shop to get a copy of their amazing snorkel map of the island. If you are a skilled diver, you will also need to explore the renowned 13,000-ft “wall” just offshore.

Novices should try a lesson; snorkelers can lease sticks and gear to the shallower water.

Either way, you should witness abundant ocean life, including moray eels, squid, turtles, wrasses, and even seahorses. There are also multiple picture options among the soft and hard corals offshore.

The sand here is ideal for a little deep sunbathing. You can rent umbrellas or sun loungers, join a game of beach volleyball, sit under a shady palm, or dance to the melody in one of the bars.

The seaside is the endpoint for the yearly Mardi Croix parade, the regional variation of Mardi Gras. It’s two fun days, and Crucian food highlights the island calendar.

Turtle Beach

Frequently making lists of the earth’s greatest beaches, Turtle Beach on Buck Island, found over 50 km away from the cruise port, is easily one of the finest beachfront in St. Croix. To get to the island, you must join a trip boat or rent a kayak, both beautiful experiences.

Around one-and-a-half miles off the northeast shore of St. Croix, Buck Island is among the only three US Underwater National Monuments.

President Kennedy first documented it in 1961 as “among the best aquatic gardens in the Caribbean Sea”, later highly developed by President Clinton.

This remote site is now a haven for snorkelers, who paddle in turquoise waters over coral and white sand. Home to a few of the most excellent snorkeling in the Caribbean, you will witness lots of colorful fish, lazily swimming turtles, and gliding rays.

An aquatic trail signposts a few of the natural marvels you witness nearby. It’s within a clear, fish-packed lagoon covered by a coral barrier reef.

True to its name, Turtle Beach is a nesting spot for hawksbill, leatherback, and green sea turtles. Rest on its white sands, searching for the terns and pelicans that also nest nearby.

The coast is part of the covered region, so be cautious not to disturb shells, rocks, and coral. The same applies to the nature track on the island, which is well-known to hikers.

Pleasingly uncommercial and ripe for independent exploration – an expert guide to St Croix

T he largest of the main US Virgin Islands, St Croix (it rhymes with Troy) has interesting sights relating to its Danish colonial history, as well as some good beaches and excellent diving/snorkelling. The island is a gentle-paced place that is far less commercialised than some other Caribbean ports of call, and compared with its little US Virgin Islands sister St Thomas, it gets a tiny fraction of the number of cruise ship visits. 

Cruise port location 

Cruise ships dock by a single pier off Frederiksted, St Croix's second-largest town, near the western end of the island. The pier can accommodate two cruise ships, but on any given day it's rare for more than one ship to be docked.

Can I walk to any places of interest?

It's less than 10 minutes' walk along the pier to the centre of the sleepy little town of Frederiksted, and you can reach the nearest beaches on foot. Free shuttles are also laid on to run passengers from their ship to the landside end of the pier. 

Getting around

St Croix is 23 miles long and up to eight miles wide. To venture beyond Frederiksted, sign up up for a cruise-ship tour or use a taxi or a shuttle minibus to explore. Taxis and shuttles buses will be waiting for custom at the end of the cruise-ship pier. From Frederiksted to the island's capital Christiansted takes about 30 minutes and costs US$16 (£13) return per person in a shared shuttle, while a taxi for two passengers costs US$24 (£20) one way. A three-hour private taxi tour of the island should cost around US$100 (£82) for up to four passengers.

What to see and do

St Croix  has two small and pretty towns – Frederiksted and Christiansted – to wander around, several other historic sights, plus easily accessible beaches for cruise-ship visitors and good diving and snorkelling. Sightseeing and beach visits can easily be done independently, using shuttle buses and taxis for transport. For activities you may want to book a tour with a cruise line. Celebrity Cruises , which has the most Caribbean itineraries featuring St Croix, offers kayaking, cycling, diving and snorkelling adventures, as well as island tours and guided walks around Frederiksted and Christiansted.  

What can I do in four hours or less?

You could spend a pleasant hour having a nose around Frederiksted, strolling along its attractive waterfront street, which is lined with brightly-coloured, brick and clapboarded buildings with gingerbread fretwork, and exploring quaint, russet-coloured Fort Frederik, which dates from 1752. There's a decent town beach just north of the fort, about five minutes' walk from the cruise ship pier. A quieter, long and sandy foreshore extends south of the town past The Fred , an attractive boutique hotel 10 minutes' walk from the pier, which offers affordable day passes. Soft-sand Rainbow Beach, 1.25 miles north of Frederiksted, is very lively on cruise-ship days, with sun-loungers and watersports galore, and food, drink and sometimes live music at the casual beachside bar/restaurant Rhythms at Rainbow Beach . 

Three rewarding sights are 10-15 minutes' drive from Frederiksted, close enough to each other to do as a mini tour in a morning. You can get a feel for St Croix's sugar plantation heritage at the Estate Whim Museum , an atmospheric, 12-acre site, which includes a coral-stone great house surrounded by a dry moat to keep it cool. The lovingly-maintained St George Village Botanical Garden  is scenically set around the ruins of an old sugar plantation, while the Cruzan Rum Distillery , established in 1760, lays on informative tours explaining the fermentation, ageing and barrelling processes, and tastings. 

Another option for a half-day outing is to whizz through the flat, mostly agricultural countryside, past the island's large oil refinery, to St Croix's historic capital Christiansted. Its clutch of yellow buildings dating from St Croix's Danish colonial rule in the 1700s and 1800s are looked after by the US National Park Service as the Christiansted National Historic Site , and include a quaint waterfront fort, Lutheran church and customs house. Hurricane Maria damaged some of the buildings in 2017, but they are still a striking ensemble. 

What can I do in eight hours or less?

Book a taxi for the day and you could take in Frederiksted and its nearby sights in the morning, have lunch and then a wander in Christiansted, drive back towards Frederiksted via St Croix's small and hilly rainforested area, and squeeze in a beach stop near Frederiksted before returning to your ship. 

Or you could book a cruise-ship excursion with the likes of Celebrity Cruises to Buck Island , a national monument off St Croix's north-east coast with a pristine coral reef. You'll take a coach transfer across to Christiansted, then a fast boat ride across to Buck Island's beach, from where you'll sail out over the reef for superb snorkelling.  

If you're a keen and competent diver, you could spend the day up at Cane Bay. A half-hour drive from Frederiksted, it's known for a spectacular drop-off wall not far out from the beach. Contact Cane Bay's Sweet Bottom Dive Center  for advice and equipment rental. 

Eat and drink

Frederiksted has a handful of appealing, independent cafés and bars along waterfront Strand Street, just down from the cruise ship pier. In Christiansted a string of casual restaurants and bars lines the boardwalk overlooking the pretty, boat-dotted bay, with American/Caribbean food on offer (burgers, chicken wings, fish tacos, lobster), and island-brewed beer and rum. 

Don’t leave the island without…

Jewellery shops sell distinctive Crucian hook bracelets, with horseshoe-shaped clasps. Wear one with the hook pointing outwards and it means you're available, pointing inwards (towards your heart) you're taken. A bottle of Cruzan rum, perhaps banana or guava flavoured, is a cheaper souvenir. 

Need to know

Flight time.

There are no direct flights from the UK to St Croix (or any of the US Virgin islands). The most straightforward option – doable in a day, flight schedules permitting – is to fly to Miami, and take a connecting flight on to St Croix from there. 

While there is crime on St Croix, it is a relatively safe Caribbean island. If sensible – don't flaunt wealth, avoid isolated beaches – chances are you'll be fine exploring independently. 

Best time to go

Most cruise ship visits to St Croix take place in the winter months (November-March), when the weather is at its best. The summer and early autumn are hotter, more humid and wetter, with August-October the peak Caribbean hurricane season. 

On Sundays some restaurants, bars and shops are closed, but most will be open if a cruise ship is visiting.

Where You Dock in St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

All cruise ships dock in Fredericksted. With only one cruise ship allowed to dock at a time, the small town keeps cruising an intimate affair. The single dock will have you enter the smaller of the island’s two largest towns.

At the end of the pier you will be welcomed by vendors displaying souvenirs, jewelry, and t-shirts. Within the town of Fredericksted you will find several historic buildings, including the fort, and several shops. The newly renovated port welcomes you with gardens and wonderful beaches.

The two major towns on St. Croix are Fredericksted where ships dock, and Christiansted, which is the primary tourist attraction you will find colorful 19th century architecture along cobbled paths, unique shopping, and two ports. Point Udall is the eastern most point of the 26-mile-long island, as well as the United Stated and is worth the trip.

Getting Around St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

Buses : Vitran is the public bus system and runs from Fredericksted to Christiansted and back about every 2 hours making sure to stop near all major shopping and some tourism areas along the way. It is $1.00 per trip, or $0.55 for senior citizens. However, the bus system timing is not very reliable if you are on a tight schedule.

Taxi Service: You will find taxis throughout Fredericksted, Christiansted, the airport, and most dock and tourism areas. Taxi rates are predetermined destination rates, however it is a good idea to discuss the rate with your driver prior to getting in the taxi. In addition to registered taxis that can be identified with their permit, “gypsy” taxis exist which determine their own fares and are not guaranteed by the island. Fares may be more negotiable with gypsy services, although you are at your own risk when it comes to dealing with these drivers.

Car Rental: If you are planning on spending several days on the island, or even a full day of sightseeing it is recommended you rent a car. Car rentals are available in both major towns and at the airport.

Shopping In St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

Both towns offer good shopping options, however, Christiansted is the primary shopping area for tourists. The town offers a wide variety of unique shops, of Crucian jewelry, souvenirs, luxury and typical island shopping.

Most mainstream big box stores and fast food restaurants are found within the inner part of the city, allowing for independent stores to occupy the main towns. The shopping experience on the island is highlighted by the 18th and 19th century buildings and stone streets you walk along. Nearly every part of each town is like walking through a museum.

Dining In St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

While there is a degree of diversity on the island your food options are limited to typical island meals with accents of spices, seafood, chicken and pork. You can also find pizza places, and typical American restaurants with burgers and salads.

There is a wide variety of venue types from food trucks which offer some great tasting foods, to casual and fine dining. Most restaurants on the island are unique and independently owned local restaurants, with very few mainstream restaurants. Many of the nicer resorts such as Carambola and Buccaneer offer fine dining choices with beautiful views of the Caribbean and beaches.

 Rum Runners Steak and Seafood: Listed as one of the perennial favorites on the island. This waterfront restaurant offers Caribbean and Continental cuisine.

 The Bombay Club: A local favorite for years. The Bombay Club serves a great assortment of local, continental, and Mediterranean cuisines.

 Bon Bagay Sailing: Cuisine developed by the islands best chefs who cook on a rotating schedule while diners enjoy the views and sunsets of the island from off-shore.

 Buccaneer Restaurants: The Buccaneer hotel offers several restaurants from casual to fine dining, as well as a beach bar. Enjoy the sand, sun, and great dining.

Things To Do in St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands

The draw to St. Croix is in the island’s beauty and outdoor activities, as well as its historical value to the Caribbean. On the western side of the island is the rainforest and mountainous region where you can enjoy horseback riding, trail walking, or enjoy the beaches and surfing.

Mixed within this side of the island are unique attractions such as the beer-drinking pigs and Crucian Rum Distillery. As you make your way toward the central and far side of the island the land becomes rolling and arid, nearly desert-like, finally ending at Point Udall, which has a magnificent view of the sea.

Common activities for tourists:

 Cruzan Rum Distillery: Tour the factory, and learn about the 350 year old history of Cruzan rum and its impact on the world. Of course, you get a little taste of many of the rum flavors available.

 Estate Little Princess: Used as a sugar plantation in the 1730’s, Estate Little Princess is now a nature conservancy. Stroll through historic buildings and nature trails, some of which lead to a secluded beach where you can enjoy the view while enjoying a picnic lunch.

 Whim Plantation: One of 300 plantations that use to dot the island, many of Whim’s original buildings have been completely restored. Tours of the Great House are offered, representing some of the best representations of 18th-century Danish plantation life. Explore the grounds and buildings that are sprawled across the 12-acre museum.

 Estate Mount Washington: Lost until 1984 when the owner found the prior sugar plantation buried in the woods of his property, Estate Mount Washington had now been restored to its original charm. The plantation Great House is considered one of the best historical renovations on the island.

 Heritage Trail: Self-guided trail that encompasses the entire island, touching on nearly 200 historic sites.

 Point Udall: Easternmost point of the island and the United States. A new monument was built at the site in 2000 and the point has been host to several ceremonies, wedding proposals, and is a great place to relax and enjoy the wonder of the crashing waves along the island.

 Rainforest: The rain forest is a display of the island’s unique and diverse habitats. Enjoy walking or horseback riding along the trails.

 Fredericksted and Christiansted forts: Both towns’ forts stand as a representation of their past as each overlooks the Caribbean the same way they did when they stood to protect the island in past centuries. The forts provide tours and freedom to explore on your own.

 Historic Downtowns: Dating back to the 1600’s you can walk along streets that once fed much of the Caribbean, America, and Europe with its rum. The towns were once bustling with the sugar cane industry and were well known to merchants, sailors, farmers, and pirates. Many of the original buildings still exist and are in use today.

 SCUBA, Snorkeling and Buck Island: St. Croix can boast some of the world’s greatest underwater coral reefs and views. SCUBA and snorkeling are popular attractions, as are exploring sunken ships in the harbors and further out. Buck Island and its reef are a U.S. National Park and the west end beach was named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world by National Geographic.

 Reef Golf Course: 9-hole golf course and driving range. Reef Golf Course is nestled in Teague Bay and also offers tennis, a stunning beach, and one of the island’s finest beachside restaurants.

 Carambola Golf Club: A world-class golf course nestled in the lush hills of St. Croix. This par-72 course has been awarded a gold medal by GOLF Magazine and given a 4-star rating by Golf Digest.

 Buccaneer Golf Club: Par-70 rolling course designed by PGA Pro Bob Joyce offers one of the most scenic courses in the Caribbean. 13, of the 18 holes are popular destinations for golfers and photographers alike.

St. Croix has dozens of powdery sand beaches lining its shores and all of them are available to the public. While most are free, be mindful of some beaches which do have fees for resorts, or restrictions due to sea turtle nesting. While there are too many to list, here are a few favorites:

 Jack and Isaac’s Beach: Remote and picturesque, these two beaches are hidden gems on St. Croix. Known for years to only locals, tour guides have now begun to bring tourists to enjoy one of the pettiest views on the island.

 Buck Island’s Turtle Beach: Buck Island is a small island off the coast of St. Croix. Turtle Beach has been acknowledged as one of the best beaches in the world, and also a haven for sea turtles.

 Cane Bay: A great family beach, with plenty of activities. It rests on a small inlet that allows for calm and warm waters to relax and enjoy.

 Rainbow Beach: Stunning turquoise water and white powdery sand. It’s an A-list beach on a great part of the island known for its beaches.

 Tamarind Reef, The Buccaneer, Carambola, and Beach on the Cay: These are all the quintessential beaches you’ve come to know from the movies. Umbrellas, lounge chairs, and beach bars only highlight the well-stocked beach toys such as snorkeling gear, and windsurfing outfits.

General Information about St. Croix 

St. Croix is the largest of the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean with a population of about 50,000 people. 

Christopher Columbus landed here on November 14, 1493 and called the island Santa Cruz.  His crew was immediately attacked by the locals.  The Spanish never colonized the Islands, but by 1590 the island was uninhabited.  It was eventually settled in 1625 by mostly Dutch and English settlers.  Over the years, the island has changed hands several times until it was sold to the US by Denmark in 1916.  The inhabitants (“Crucians” or "Cruzans") became US citizens in 1927.

What to see and to do?

We arrived on a cruise (please see Rudy's Cruise Guide ) for a day and our plan was to see some sights and then visit a beach for sunbathing and snorkeling.  The following is a short list of the destinations we were considering and the reasons why we decided on what we did:

Short list of cities: Frederiksted and Christiansted

The cruise ship dock is in Frederiksted, which is a small town with few interesting points.  Christiansted, which is a 45min car ride away, is a bigger city which many more attractions.

As this was our first stop on the cruise and we just came from cold and snowy Pittsburgh, we decided to do a walking tour of Frederiksted and spend the rest of the day on a beach.

Short list of beaches for sunbathing and snorkeling: Cane Bay, Rainbow Beach, and Buck Island

We decided for Rainbow Beach as it is close to Frederiksted and would allow us to spend the most time on the beach.  Cane Bay is said to be more beautiful and have better snorkeling, but the waves and currents there are less predictable.  Buck Island was a close second, but the high cost and time to get there and back did not appeal to us.

The Holy Trinity Lutheran Church , built in 1840′s, is the oldest church in Frederiksted.  The original staircase leading up to the church is in disrepair as a newer side entrance with fewer steps is now the main entrance to the church.

Fort Frederik was named for the Danish monarch Frederik V.  Construction of the fort started in 1752 and finished in 1760.  Besides its military use Fort Frederik was used as a police station and jail, court, fire department, public library and a telephone exchange.  

The fort has a museum that you can visit for a small admission fee.

Just outside the fort, in Buddhoe Park , is the statue of Moses “Buddhoe” Gottlieb.

On July 3, 1848 the freed slave Moses Gottlieb also known as “General Buddhoe” led an uprising and Governor Gen. Peter von Scholten, fearing that they would burn the town to the ground, declared all the slaves in the Danish West Indies free.  This event makes St. Croix one of the first islands where slaves received emancipation and thus Frederiksted is sometimes called “Freedom City”.

Getting off the pier, you see the Oscar E. Henry Customs House in front of you and the red painted Fort Frederik to your left.

A few feet away and in front of the Oscar E. Henry Customs House across the street is the Freedom Fountain .  It was installed in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the emancipation of the slaves in St. Croix.

In October 1878, the “1878 St. Croix Labor Riot”, locally also known as “Fireburn”, broke out and many buildings, but not the churches, were burned to the ground. 

St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church was built in 1846 from limestone, coral, and molasses as other building materials were in short supply.  The outside of the church is original while the inside has been restored.

Rainbow Beach

Rainbow Beach is 1 ¼ miles (2km) walk or taxi ride away from the cruise ship pier.  We could even see our cruise ship from the beach.

The beach is a nice white sand beach with turquoise water.  Even though it is not very wide and deep, it did not feel crowded when we were there.  Rainbow beach can be directly accessed from Highway 63 and it even has a restaurant on site.

The water was clear and snorkeling was best close to the rocks south the restaurant.

Tourists tend to flock to the more famous St. Thomas, but there’s plenty to see and do in St. Croix for all types of travelers on a Caribbean cruise .

Beaches are abundant across the island; Butler Bay, Dorsch Beach, and Frederiksted Beach are perfect for relaxed sunbathing and family fun. Top sights & attractions for cruises to st. croix, frederiksted.

On your cruise to St. Croix, it’s likely you’ll dock in Frederiksted, which is on the west side of the island. While in Frederiksted, check out the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, or the historic Fort Frederik, built in the 18th century to protect the area’s exports from pirates. Walk along Frederiksted Beach or explore the historic district to spot Danish-influenced architecture.

On the north shore of St. Croix is the town of Christiansted, where Danish-colonial sites and romantic waterfront restaurants are just a normal part of daily life. Christiansted is only a half hour drive or taxi ride from Frederiksted. Take a tour of Fort Christiansvaern, an 18th century historic landmark used to ward off pirate attacks on the town. Then, go shopping along Gallows Bay, a commercial district with plenty of small boutiques.

Sandy Point Wildlife Refuge

See endangered species up close at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, just 15 or so minutes away from Frederiksted by car. The leatherback sea turtle is one of the species the refuge protects, as these turtles nest in the Virgin Islands year after year. Many visitors call this refuge a must-see while they were in St. Croix.

Buck Island Reef National Monument

The underwater trail at Buck Island Reef is practically famous among divers, who scuba the clear waters for stunning views of the coral reefs below. Visitors can also walk the nature trails and take in what it’s like to visit this uninhabited island. If you’re coming from Frederiksted, Buck Island is less than an hour’s drive, but access to the island is only available through boat or tour.

Rainbow Beach

On your cruise to St. Croix, enjoy one of the restaurants or bars along Rainbow Beach north of Frederiksted for a lively afternoon. Swimming and snorkeling are two big activities here, and families come to Rainbow Beach on Sundays for family fun and watersports. The small size of the beach makes it cozy, and yet it still attracts plenty of activity whether you’re paddleboarding on the water or ordering a drink from Rhythms, the go-to bar on the beach.

Culture & History of the St. Croix Cruise Port

A cruise to St. Croix will immerse you in the history of this underrated island. The natives to this area were the Arawak, then the area changed hands to the Carib tribes, The island was visited by Christopher Columbus in 1493, and later, the French occupied the island from 1650 to 1733. Shortly after, the French sold the island to the Danish West Indies Company. Period this period, the sugar and rum trades boomed as a result of slave labor, and cotton and molasses were major exports of the island as well. Danish influence is obvious in St. Croix, and a huge part of their history. In 1917, the Danish West Indies Company sold St. Croix and St. Thomas to the United States.

Today, St. Croix is not only a haven for adventure seekers and ecotourism, but a place with abundant natural beauty, protected wildlife preserves, and is known for plentiful opportunities for diving and snorkeling. In December, the Crucian Christmas Festival is celebrated in Frederiksted and Christiansted, a month-long tradition complete with costumes, food, and parades for both children and adults.

St. Croix Port Facilities & Location

St. Croix’s cruise port is unique because it isn’t as built up as St. Thomas or other parts of the U.S. Virgin Islands. There are a few shops and even fewer distractions at the cruise port, meaning you have to use your stop on a St. Croix cruise wisely and head into parts of Frederiksted right away. Your ship will either dock on the west side of the island at Frederiksted, or further east at Christiansted, a little over 30 minutes away by car.

Transportation in St. Croix

Bus, bicycle, motorbike, and walking are all options for getting around St. Croix. Taking a bus is trickier than getting around in other ways, as the Vitran Public Bus system can run erratically sometimes. There is no bus service on Sundays. You can also rent a car and drive yourself, or take a taxi from the cruise port in Frederiksted to various destinations around the island. Taxi tours are also popular in this area, but you won’t find ride-sharing services on the island. You’ll be able to hail a taxi from the cruise port, where drivers frequently wait.

Shopping Near the St. Croix Cruise Port

Shopping in St. Croix is a little simpler than the bigger name shops on St. Thomas. There are duty-free stores selling local rum and souvenirs in Frederiksted by the cruise port, and more shopping—like boutiques, clothing, and local markets—in the town center. Many shops are closed on Sundays for religious observation.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of the U.S. Virgin Islands is the U.S. dollar (USD). Tipping is much like traveling in other parts of the U.S—leave 15-20% for restaurants and bars, 10-15% for taxis, and leave a dollar or two per bag for bellhops. Don’t forget to tip your tour operators at least 15% of their fee. If you head to one of the flea or farmer’s markets, haggling with vendors is pretty common. Credit cards are commonly accepted, and ATMs are scattered throughout the city too.

Keeping Up With The Joneses

Day 6 of our Royal Caribbean Cruise on Adventure of the Seas took us to the Frederiksted Pier in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands .

We started our day with a quick breakfast at Windjammer, swung by Cafe Promenade for lattes and then grabbed towels on our way off the ship. Skipping passed the shops we headed for the taxi area and took a van for $5/per person to Rainbow Beach. The driver who dropped us off did not charge for the kids but he did give us a heads up that other drivers typically do. When we got picked up from Rainbow Beach to head back, we had a different driver who said it would be $20 for the 4 of us. We recognized this driver from earlier in the day; he happened to be talking with our other driver at the port when we got off the ship so we politely mentioned that his buddy who dropped us off did not charge for the kids and he kindly honored that (doesn’t hurt to ask). I know some people walked since Rainbow Beach is only about one mile from the pier. *Remember to take cash for taxis and tips.

Rainbow Beach

You get dropped off at Rainbow Beach right in front of Rhythms . There are lounge chairs and umbrellas you can rent conveniently located next to Rhythms so food, drinks, the bathroom and West End Water Sports are all close by. It’s a la carte style pricing and there is a sign that lists the costs at the entrance. To give you an idea, our two loungers with an umbrella was $40. If you want to skip the cost for loungers, you can walk farther down the beach, around the corner and put towels down for the day.

Potential Cons:

The water here was rougher than Columbus Cove in Labadee, Haiti and Magens Bay in St Thomas and it was much rockier. Getting into the water was challenging for some of the older folks because the beach dropped off a little right where the waves were crashing which made it a struggle to step down to get in and step up to get out because they were getting knocked off balance at the same time. We were glad that we all wore our sneaker water shoes because we definitely saw people hurting their feet stepping on rocks/shells or stubbing their toes on the rocks.

Our kids were actually excited that the water was rougher. The other beaches were calm and flat; Rainbow Beach had waves. They loved being able to float on top of the waves and let the waves push them into shore. St. Croix’s water was clearer and the best out of the ports we visited for snorkeling. We brought our snorkels with us, snorkeled right off the beach and saw some neat fish. A few people nearby said they saw an octopus hugging a rock, sting rays and turtles. Noah and Leah spent most of the day playing with some of the kiddos they met at Adventure Ocean while Frank and I relaxed in our hammock style rafts or on the loungers.

Lunch at Rhythms

We enjoyed our lunch at Rhythms! It was the perfect spot to sit in the shade and take in the beautiful view because the water is just gorgeous. The kids liked their wings and our smash burgers were good. Menu & Pricing for Rhythms

Jet Skis from West End Water Sports

Noah has been begging to do jet skis so we rented two of those for 30 minutes for $75/each from West End Water Sports . 30 minutes was plenty of time so I am glad we did not opt for the full hour. Noah loved it and kept yelling for Frank to go faster. Leah was nervous about falling off but was fine once we got going. *If you are planning to do jet skis, be sure to reserve a time slot and pay as soon as they open. Once the first group got out on the jet skis, a lot of people started to sign up and they quickly filled their time slots for the day.

If go back to St Croix, we will absolutely book the Snorkeling Excursion on Buck Island through Big Beards. We had no idea how clear the water would be and after just snorkeling at the beach, we would LOVE to see what’s really out there! There were a few people on the Ship who we heard raving about this excursion.

• Snorkel Sets – We all liked snorkeling here because of how clear the water was – Adult Snorkel Set – Kid Snorkel Set
• Hammock style floats  and  electric air pump
• Sunscreen – We use  Hawaiian Tropic Lotion  and  Coola Face Sunscreen  for us and then  Alba Spray Sunscreen  and a  Neutrogena Face Stick  for the kids because it goes on clear and does not need rubbed in. Also high recommend  O’Keefe’s Lip Repair  35 SPF for a lip sunscreen.

Arriving By Cruise Ship

The Ann E. Abramson Pier is named in honor of the Virgin Islands Public Works Commissioner who was responsible for much of the rejuvenation of the Frederiksted area. This is the pier where most of the large cruise ships dock, as well as military ships, submarines, and other naval vessels. From time to time, tall-ships especially from Denmark, can be seen here.

The dock itself has been a favorite diving place especially for viewing bright coral, sponges, and a multitude of fish life. A night dive should reveal the sea-horses unique to this pier. Visitors arriving at the pier often walk through the small town of Frederiksted and walk to the nearby beaches and beach club
