Russell Howard Teases His High-Octane US Tour: ‘A Big, Fat, Funny Show’ (Exclusive Video)

The U.K. stand-up comedian’s “Russell Howard Live 2023” kicks off Oct. 4 in  Durham, North Carolina

Standup comedian Russell Howard, beloved in his native U.K. for Sky’s long-running “The Russell Howard Hour” and known to global audiences for Netflix specials “Lubricant” (2021) and “Recalibrate” (2017), is once again taking his live show through the States.

“The unadulterated giddiness of U.S. audiences” is what he’s most looking forward to about the 15-stop U.S. leg, kicking off Oct. 4 in Durham, North Carolina.

“As much as I love performing stand-up in the U.K., it’s like Mordor in comparison,” he told TheWrap ahead of the exclusive premiere of the “Russell Howard Live 2023” trailer, seen above. “In the U.K., you’ll get a standing ovation at the end of the show, whereas in America you get one at the beginning as well!”

As for which stop he’s most looking forward to, Howard has his eye on the Oct. 12 stop at New York City’s historic Town Hall: “I love New York. It’s disgusting, dirty, and loud but you open a door and suddenly you find yourself somewhere incredible. It’s like an advent calendar covered in sh-t.”

Russell Howard at The Palladium

The outing marks his first time coming back to the U.S. since his pre-COVID run of “Respite,” which sold over 300,000 tickets and marked his biggest world tour to date. It was later filmed for Netflix’s “Lubricant.”

Of the upcoming stops, he promised a “big, fat, funny show with loads of jokes and stories,” and teased that the set will change as the tour goes on.

“I’ve just done 125 shows in the U.K. to over 250,000 people — so I’ve got to change it up for my own sanity,” he said.

Can we expect some riffs on today’s political landscape? Count it as likely.

“I find it fascinating with all the talent and ingenuity bursting from America, that the election will ultimately come down to two old men,” he joked of the ongoing 2024 presidential election, indicating that the world is watching. “You get more options in a Starbucks than the ballot box. Neither Trump nor Biden fill you with hope. It’s the same in the U.K. Politics is proof that the cream can rise to the top — but turds can float there, too.”

Watch Howard’s U.S. tour trailer in the exclusive premiere above, and catch him live when he comes to a city near you .

Russell Howard

russell howard us tour 2022

The following description comes from the event organizer.

Following becoming the first international comedian to perform in New Zealand and Australia since the global lockdown with sold-out postponed legs during his biggest world tour to date, Respite, British stand-up Russell Howard (BBC’s Russell Howard's Good News, Sky’s The Russell Howard Hour, Netflix’s Recalibrate) announces rescheduled USA and Canada dates for Spring 2022. Starting with a sold-out and critically acclaimed UK arena run in Autumn 2019, the suspended tour (due to the coronavirus) will, in total, take Russell to 71 cities across 24 countries in 5 continents.

Russell returned to present his satirical take on global news, politics and stories dominating the cultural zeitgeist with the fourth season of The Russell Howard Hour airing on Sky in the UK in Autumn 2020. The critically acclaimed and highly topical show has amassed over 400 million views on social media with multiple segments going viral online, with a further two seasons commissioned. The show features in-depth interviews, with an array of fascinating previous guests including Ed Sheeran, Matthew McConaughey, Naomi Klein, Jim Carrey, Brian Cox, Dizzee Rascal and Elizabeth Banks. Every episode is available to watch globally via Russell Howard’s YouTube Channel which has over one million subscribers.

Russell’s 2017 sell-out international tour, Round the World, saw him break the record for the biggest English speaking stand-up show in China and play a record-breaking 10 night run at the Royal Albert Hall, overtaking 8 in a row jointly held by Frank Sinatra and Barry Manilow. The tour culminated with the global release of Netflix Special Recalibrate.

What The Press Have Said About Russell’s previous stand-up show, Respite :

“In Respite he takes stock of the current chaos and concludes that we need more fun…. Howard says laughter brings people together. It certainly did last night.” ★★★★  Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard

“comedy A-lister…With smart, satisfying and well-rationed callbacks, Howard builds his giddy anecdotes into a tsunami of feelgood humour, drenching the sizeable crowd in positivity. No wonder they were moved to rise to their feet.” ★★★★½ Steve Bennett, Chortle

“Howard’s riffs on life in 2021 that is the best material…Respite is, at times, Howard’s philosophy on life. Sort of like a self-help book for a flawed world slowly coming out of hibernation that would be a whole lot better – and sillier – if we followed his advice….has achieved global success… You would have to be pretty joyless yourself not to have fun at a Russell Howard gig. He will now take these life lessons around the world, offering togetherness, hope and a lot of silliness” ★★★★ Martin Booth, The Telegraph

“Howard masterfully builds a show that is hilarious and convincing in equal manner”

★★★★  Owen Richards, The i

“In 2021, what does gratitude sound like? Having witnessed it firsthand, I’d say it’s the sound of a 2000-seat auditorium lit up with laughter…Howard is one of the world’s biggest comedy stars. His flow is punchy and unstoppable” Maggie Wicks, The New Zealand Herald

“Russell Howard is at the top of his game, his elegantly crafted observational stand-up using cunningly spun callbacks and physical comedy to flirt with controversy, domesticity, politics, sex, and Calippo ice lollies” Stephen Armstrong, The Sunday Times

“It’s safe to say this show went down a storm” ★★★★★  Tabitha James, Young Perspective

Other Things The Press Said About The Russell Howard Hour:

★★★★ The Mail On Sunday  ★★★★  Heat Magazine  ★★★★  The Daily Star  ★★★★  TV Times  ★★★★  The Daily Express  ★★★★  Star Magazine

“Russell Howard has found his place with this satirical vehicle” Victoria Segal, The Sunday Times

“the star doesn’t shy away from the biggest news stories of the week…hilarious” Louis Staples, The Independent

“sardonic but ultimately affirmative and optimistic take on global news and politics. What sets Howard apart from other TV satirists is his faith in human nature.” Ed Power, The i

“carved a niche on stage and screen of going behind the headlines in a way that is funny, relatable and often edgier than he is given credit for… hugely popular satirical show” Serena Kutchinsky, The Evening Standard

“ Apparently ageless, hugely physical with his performances and relentlessly funny, he has been a mainstay of the schedules for more than a decade” Iman Amrani, The Guardian

“Altogether more politicised and hard-hitting….It was a treat to find Howard showing so much bite… it’s not often you get such spiky satire on Sky1…Howard and his Hour should be applauded.” Michael Hogan, The Daily Telegraph

“Howard’s routines provide a more pointed critique of government incompetence and malfeasance than you might expect…his interview segments offer extended chats with an eclectic range of guests beyond the same old roster of celebrities” Jack Seale, Radio Times

“Underestimate Russell Howard at your peril…behind that smile is a performer with real teeth ready to tear into current affairs and the many failings of our lords and masters” Mark Wareham, The Mail On Sunday

“There is no denying the popularity of Russell. As his topical comedy returns for its fourth series, the numbers it can boast are staggering- it’s had over 500 million views on social media and has covered topics as varied as the porn industry and Ku Klux Klan” Eleanor Relf, The Sun

“a big hit for Sky” Forbes

“His topical chat show has been a hit, securing fascinating celebs like Louis Theroux, Jon Ronson and Naomi Klein for extended chats” Graeme Virtue, The Guardian

“Russell Howard gets set to nail our messed-up world once again with another series of sharp comedic insights from the week’s biggest stories” Emily Baker, The i

“The Russell Howard Hour, a weekly comedy series on Sky 1 in which Howard brings his characteristic wit and observational humor to the stories dominating the cultural zeitgeist.” Dane Rivera , UPROXX (USA)

“a refreshing antidote to the default world-weary cynicism of so many of his comedy peers.” Sharon Lougher, Metro

“Russell Howard has truly gone global…Though he may be known for his cheeky, happy-go-lucky demeanour, Howard has never been one to shy away from the bigger issues…Whether it’s highlighting child hunger, unashamed praise for the police, or taking aim at Trumps’ views on transgender people in the military, the varying topics are all things Howard has a strong opinion on.” Alex Nelson, The i

“no one can seriously deny him his place at comedy’s top table…the way in which Howard views the world has changed. He is more reflective, less flippant, than he used to be” Rupert Hawksley, The Daily Telegraph

EXCLUSIVE : British comedian Russell Howard is returning to Netflix with a stand-up comedy special and a documentary.

Howard will launch stand-up special Lubricant and Until the Wheels Come Off , a companion documentary, on the streamer on December 14. It is thought that it marks the first stand-up special to be launched in unison with a doc.

Howard, who is behind Sky’s The Russell Howard Hour and BBC’s Russell Howard’s Good News , was about to prepare for the biggest world tour of his career in 2019. He had just gotten married, was turning 40 and was celebrating his 20th year in comedy. For the first time in his career, he was allowing cameras to follow his life, whilst also navigating huge changes in his personal life. Then bats got involved.

As Russell’s wife resumed duties on the NHS front line, he was sent to his parents to lockdown in his childhood bedroom. What followed was 18 months of the strangest gigs of his career – the starting, the stopping, the tents, the stadiums, and even travelling across the world to New Zealand, culminating with taping his latest stand-up special, Lubricant in London, while Until the Wheels Come Off maps his attempts to keep performing throughout the pandemic

The two-parter is produced by Avalon, the producer behind HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver . Lubricant is exec produced by Howard, Jon Thoday, James Taylor and Richard Allen-Turner, while Until The Wheels Come Off is exec produced by Jon Thoday, James Taylor and Richard Allen-Turner.

Howard, who previously released his last stand-up special Recalibrate via Netflix in 2017, will tour across North America and Europe in 2022, taking him to 79 cities across 24 countries in 5 continents.

Howard Jones, ABC and Haircut 100 Team Up for New Wave Extravaganza North American Tour

Howard Jones

A new wave one-stop shop will tour North America this summer when Howard Jones and ABC will be hitting stages across North America with special guest Haircut 100. The full itinerary appears below.

“I’m very excited to be hitting the road with my friends ABC and Haircut 100,” Jones enthused. “Our audiences can look forward to some seriously top tunes night after night!  Bring your celebratory selves to the party.”

Popular on Variety

Of course, the evening will play out like an evening filled with hits from the early days of MTV, when the so-called “Second British Invasion” dominated the channel. Jones’ hits “New Song” and “What Is Love,” and “Things Can Only Get Better” probably segued into or out of ABC’s “Look of Love,” “Poison Arrow” and “Be Near Me” and Haircut 100’s “Love Plus One” and “Fantastic Day.”

All three acts have gone on to other successes, but this tour brings together the songs and sounds that first brought them to fame.
