Films to inspire your African Safari

My earliest memory of opening up a National Geographic magazine was seeing elephants, lion, zebras, rhinos and other animals in Africa along with tribes and cultures so distant to mine.

Going on safari has been a dream to have a unique experience of seeing this wildlife adventure, experiencing different cultures and spectacular scenery!

Until my first trip to Africa, I explored through these safari films featuring the breathtaking landscapes, historical events of locals and human interactions with wildlife and the stars of the savannah featuring conservation programs and struggles to preserve them.

Out of Africa Movie

Out of Africa (1985)

  • Available on Amazon

The movie, Out of Africa , inspired many a traveler to take a trip to Africa and specifically Kenya. The movie features breathtaking scenery of Kenya including the areas around Nairobi and the Maasai Mara.

The movie, based on the book by Karen Blixen , is a memoir of her life in the early 1900’s in Kenya, then known as British East Africa to colonists. Meryl Streep and Robert Redford play the lead characters for this romance, though I believe the true romance of the film is Karen falling in love with the land and people of Kenya.

Karen writes and reveals in the movie her own personal experience as a woman in this time period running a coffee plantation in spite of her absent husband and interactions with locals many of which were part of the infamous Happy Valley Set of the Kenya Colony in the 1920’s. The story touches on events of the time including colonialism, World War I, shooting safaris and her interactions with the local Kikuyu tribe. A distance time.

On a trip to Kenya, you can visit her home and conversations with the locals will reveal that the love went both ways. Karen introduced Kenya to many in the world both through her 1937 book and the subsequent 1985 Academy Award winning film.

Gorillas in the Mist Movie

Gorillas in the Mist (1988)

Gorillas in the Mist is another true story based on the life of Dian Fossey. The story tells the tale of the naturalist, played by Sigourney Weaver, and her relationship with the group of primates she studies in the Congo.

Studying them at close quarters, Fossey develops a means of communicating with the gorillas, and in so doing becomes obsessed with the beasts’ well-being. Appalled by the poaching of the gorillas for their skins, Fossey complains to the Ugandan government, which dismisses her by explaining that poaching is the only means by which some of the Ugandan natives can themselves survive.

With the threat of poachers hovering in the background and strife all around in Rwanda, there’s high drama as well as some magnificent footage of real gorillas in their natural habitat.

BBC Africa

BBC Africa (2013)

The BBC created this incredible six-part mini series, BBC Africa , on Africa’s wild places and wildlife.

Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, he takes us on an awe-inspiring journey through on of the most diverse places on earth including the Kalahari desert, the Sahara Desert, the savannah of East Africa, and jungles of the Congo as well as diverse wildlife including black rhinos, mountain gorillas, and much more of Africa’s amazing wildlife.

The Last Lions Movie

The Last Lions (2012)

From the lush wetlands of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, this documentary focuses on one lioness, named Ma di Tau (“Mother of Lions”), as she tries to protect her cubs against the many threats they face in the wild including poaching.

The Last Lions is a documentary film about the heartbreaking decline of the lion population in Africa. Fifty years ago there were close to 500 million lions in Africa. Today there are around 20,000.

Lions, unlike elephants which are far more numerous, have virtually no protection under government mandate or through international accords. The safari eco-tourist industry brings in over 200 billion dollars per year with lions being a top “must-see” and yet little is done to protect the lions. In addition, big cats are at the very top of the food chain and their elimination would wreak havoc on all species below them in ecosystem collapse.

The documentary was made in collaboration between National Geographic and their Explorers-in-Residence, Dereck and Beverly Joubert, who are filmmakers from Botswana. The film is narrated by Jeremy Irons.

The Ivory Game

The Ivory Game

  • Available on Netflix

It takes 2 seconds seeing a parade of elephants in the wild to be enthralled by these highly intelligent and emotional beasts. The interactions between the young bulls and then groups of mothers and their calves show the complexity of their family relationships.

The movie, Ivory Game , is a documentary revealing the Ivory Trade industry endangering the elephants. The filmmakers show all side of this Ivory industry from the insatiable Chinese market and the local poachers to the wildlife conversationalists and government programs to save the elephants.

I watched this movie on the night before I went on a week long safari in Tanzania where the documentary is partially filmed. As a tourist, I just in awe of seeing these animals, but the documentary provided the rich context of ecosystems in Africa where local poachers living in poverty are enticed to sell off the expensive ivory by dealers and also local people are losing crops when the elephants migrate.

The filmmakers looks at all sides working on solutions to save both the elephants and locals interests while stopping the Ivory Trade.

Born Free Movie

Born Free (1966)

Born Free  is a 1966 British drama film starring Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers as Joy and George Adamson, a real-life couple who raised Elsa the Lioness, an orphaned lion cub, to adulthood, and released her into the wilderness of Kenya.

At a national park in Kenya, English game warden George Adamson (Bill Travers) and his wife, Joy (Virginia McKenna), care for three orphaned lion cubs. The lion cubs parents were killed after attacking villagers.

After the two larger lions are shipped off to a zoo in the Netherlands, the smallest of the three, Elsa, stays with the couple. When Elsa is blamed for causing an elephant stampede in the nearby village, head warden John Kendall (Geoffrey Keen) demands the young lion either be trained to survive in the wilds of the Serengeti or be sent to a zoo.

The making of the film was a life-changing experience for actors Virginia McKenna and her husband Bill Travers, who became animal rights activists and were instrumental in creating the  Born Free Foundation .

To Walk with Lions Movie

To Walk with Lions (1999)

To Walk with Lions  is a 1999 film directed by Carl Schultz and starring Richard Harris as George Adamson.

It follows the later years of wild game preserver/naturalist Adamson whose life was transformed into an animal activist after his experience saving a lion cub shown in the movie Born Free .

After his marriage to Joy Adamson ended, Adamson spent the latter part of his life protecting the lions and other wildlife in the Kora National Reserve, Kenya. His program helps ease zoo-bred lions into their natural habitat. The fact-based film focuses on his struggle against poachers and government corruption blocking his quest for wildlife preservation.

The Ghost & the Darkness Movie

The Ghost and the Darkness (1996)

Set in 1898 and starring Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas, The Ghost and the Darkness is based on the true story of two lions in East Africa that killed dozens of people working on a railroad.

Sir Robert Beaumont (Tom Wilkinson) is behind schedule on a railroad in Africa. Enlisting noted engineer John Henry Patterson (Val Kilmer) to right the ship, Beaumont expects results. Everything seems great until the crew discovers the mutilated corpse of the project’s foreman (Henry Cele), seemingly killed by a lion. After several more attacks, Patterson calls in famed hunter Charles Remington (Michael Douglas), who has finally met his match in the bloodthirsty lions.

Don’t let this movie put you off safaris. This true story will highlight the struggles in Africa between local populations, development and wildlife that has been a part of their story for over a hundred years.

The Lion King Movie

The Lion King (1994)

When you think of safaris and big game, it’s hard not to immediately imagine the Circle of Life scene from the beginning of Disney’s epic African adventure,  The Lion King . It might be animation and talking lions rather than real life nature scenes, but adults and kids alike can’t fail to be inspired to take a safari holiday after watching Simba on screen.

The Disney imagineers definitely did their homework. On safari, you will find many of the names of the animals are Swahili and the characteristics of the animals is spot on. I especially saw it in cranky old bachelor lions and the Pummba.

The Legends of Tarzan Movie

The Legend of Tarzan (2016)

Everyone’s favorite jungle hero has been the subject of many films over the Hollywood years.

In The Legend of Tarzan , it’s been nearly a decade since Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård), also known as John Clayton III, left Africa to live in Victorian England with his wife Jane.

Danger lurks on the horizon as Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz), a treacherous envoy for King Leopold, devises a scheme that lures the couple to the Congo.

Rom plans to capture Tarzan and deliver him to an old enemy in exchange for diamonds. When Jane becomes a pawn in his devious plot, Tarzan must return to the jungle to save the woman he loves.

Other Disney Animated versions

  • Tarzan (2014)
  • The Jungle Book (2016)
  • The Jungle Book (1967)

I will always be partial to The Jungle Book (1967) for the music.  You can’t help but hum “The Bare Necessities”  or “I wanna be like you” after hearing it.

Road to Zanzibar Movie

Road to Zanzibar (1941)

Road to Zanzibar is a trip back to old Hollywood.

After the success of contemporary films in the safari genre, Bob Hope parodies African adventures with this farce.

The movie is classic Hollywood with ridiculous scenarios including love triangles, races through the jungle, swimming with leopards and plenty of jewels, the fast-paced comedy is a fun trip.

The African Queen Movie

The African Queen (1952)

Another one from old Hollywood, Th e African Queen focuses on life in Africa during World War II.

After religious spinster’s (Katharine Hepburn) missionary brother is killed in WWI Africa, dissolute steamer captain (Humphrey Bogart) offers her safe passage. She’s not satisfied so she persuades him to destroy a German gunboat. The two spend most of their time fighting with each other rather than the Germans. In true Hollywood fashion, time alone on the river leads to love.

The movie, shot in Uganda and the Congo, was one of the first movies to use real locations and backgrounds.

White Hunter Black Heart Movie

White Hunter Black Heart (1990)

Clint Eastwood’s film is based loosely on the experiences of writer Peter Viertel and director John Huston on the set of The African Queen .

Love trumps in the 1950s classic The Africa Queen, but White Hunter Black Heart is much darker and explores the morality of hunting wild animals.

Hard-living, macho movie director John Wilson (Clint Eastwood) arrives in 1950s Zimbabwe to prepare for his next film. Accompanied by screenwriter Pete Verrill (Jeff Fahey), Wilson becomes far more interested in shooting an elephant than getting ready for the shoot.

Determined, Wilson moves production to a village where a native hunter helps him in his quest. Obsessed with this goal even as filming grows ever more chaotic, the director begins to question the ethics and origins of his fixation.

King Solomon's Mines Movie

King Solomon’s Mines (1950)

King Solomon’s Mines , based on H. Rider Haggard’s novel is about a rescue party that sets out to find an explorer who has disappeared on an African treasure hunt.

The search leads the party across the continent and through the terrors of jungle, swamp, and desert.

Their ultimate destination is the fabled lost mine of Solomon, a source of unimaginable wealth and deadly danger.

There is also a 1985 version of King Solomon’s Mines starring Richard Chamberlain and Sharon Stone, which has a more Indiana Jones feel.

Mogambo Movie

Mogambo (1953)

In M ogambo , Victor Marswell (Clark Gable) is a big-game hunter in Kenya. After Eloise Kelly (Ava Gardner) is stood up by a friend there, she falls in with Marswell.

Shortly thereafter, the Nordleys (Grace Kelly, Donald Sinden) arrive for a gorilla safari. Mrs. Nordley, disillusioned with her husband, takes a liking to Marswell, and the two have a brief affair. Kelly grows jealous, and the two women engage in a battle of wills over the hunter, while Mr. Nordley remains oblivious to it all.

This is an old classic Hollywood triangle filmed in Kenya and Uganda. The music featured in the film was mostly performed by local native tribes.

Hatari Movie

Hatari! (1962)

Hatari , meaning “Danger” in Swahili , stars the legendary John Wayne takes the cowboy from the Old West to the African landscape. Filmed in Tanzania in the Ngorongoro Crater, this old Hollywood film is about a group of who traps animals for zoos. While not an activity I endorse today, this was the historical reality at the time.

A female wildlife photographer joins the group to document and finds herself the mother of baby elephants she tries to save.

The movie features the amazing scenery and wildlife of Tanzania and I recognized many of the places still from my recent safari.

The Naked Prey Movie

The Naked Prey (1966)

The Naked Prey is set in the South African veld. This eerie movie starring Cornel Wilde is a dark tale that switched the traditional roles of a hunting safari.

The guide leads a troop of hunters through a tribe’s colony to start the hunt, but when the group offends the locals, he finds himself in the role of the animals – naked and being chased through the landscape by warriors from the tribe.

Young Indiana Jones Chronicales

Young Indiana Jones Chronicles: Passion for Life

The Young Indiana Jones is a TV series, created by Steven Spielberg, featuring a 10 and later 17-year-old Indiana Jones on his adventures in his early year.  The set includes 3 seasons and 24 episodes

The “Passion for Life” episode focuses on a 10-year-old Indiana Jones as he goes on safari with his parent in British East Africa in September 1910.

Young Jones befriends a Massai boy named Meto who helps him in his search for the rare Fringe-Eared Oryx for former US President Teddy Roosevelt.

The scenery is spectacular and in typical Indiana Jones style, an adventure ensues as Indy finds himself in the middle of it all.   The episode is one hour, but the DVD set also has a complimentary disc with documentaries exploring the themes in each episode with historical clips and commentary.

19 Inspirational Safari Movies

Watch a classic safari movie before you go.

Getting excited about an upcoming African safari holiday? Hollywood has a long history of creative safari movies about all things Africa and wildlife – dating back to 1932’s “Congorilla” documentary of jungle and savannah wildlife activity in Belgian Congo (now D.R. Congo).

The genre has evolved over the decades, meaning there is now a good choice of films available to bring the magic of the safari experience into your living room. Check out our list below of the most inspirational safari movies to watch before you go – the first section of the list features traditional movies, and the latter section focusses on documentary safari movies. All are highly recommended and well worth viewing!

Out of Africa

A Hollywood classic, Out of Africa is one of those rare films that you can’t fail to fall in love with. Whether you’re watching it for the dazzling scenery of the Kenyan landscapes or the drama and romance, Meryl Streep and Robert Redford make for compelling viewing in this tale of Africa, war, and wildlife.

[amazon box=”0783240171″ template=”vertical”]

Gorillas in the Mist

Like Out of Africa , the movie is based on a true story, but here the similarities end. Instead of a romantic interest, Gorillas in the Mist tells the tale of naturalist Sigourney Weaver’s touching relationship with the group of primates she studies in the Rwandan jungle . With the threat of poachers hovering in the background and strife all around in Rwanda, there’s high drama as well as some magnificent footage of real gorillas in their natural habitat.

The Lion King

When you think of safaris and big game, it’s hard not to immediately imagine the Circle of Life scene from the beginning of Disney’s epic African adventure, The Lion King. The African Queen

An old fashioned tale of action, romance, and daring exploits in the wilds of the jungle, The African Queen is a fantastic romp with two of the era’s best-loved actors – Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. Shot in Uganda and the Congo, it was one of the first movies to use real locations and backgrounds which adds an unparalleled realism to the story.

[amazon box=”B06XC4QVNJ” template=”vertical”]

White Hunter Black Heart

Clint Eastwood’s film is based loosely on the experiences of writer Peter Viertel and director John Huston on the set of The Africa Queen. When filmmaker John Wilson becomes obsessed with the safari and elephants, disaster begins to stir. White Hunter Black Heart is a must watch!

[amazon box=”B003AWRMCY” template=”vertical”]

This interesting film starring the legendary John Wayne removes the cowboy from his favourite setting and transports him to a vast African landscape. Filmed in Tanzania , it’s a dramatic story about a group of hunters, a female wildlife photographer and the race to save a group of baby elephants from a terrible fate – life in a zoo. With exhilarating wildlife chases and magnificent Mount Meru providing a dramatic backdrop, Hatari! is a thrilling romp of a safari movie.

[amazon box=”B072ZLG4RV” template=”vertical”]

Road to Zanzibar

[amazon box=”B07FMQ2H51″ template=”vertical”]

Everyone’s favourite African jungle hero has been the subject of many films over the Hollywood years, but in 1999 Disney gave him a 3D makeover and plenty of animated jungle action before the happy ending with Jane. Featuring a paranoid elephant and a smart-mouthed gorilla, Tarzan   is a family film that brings the jungle to life with sweeping scenes.

[amazon box=”B000AAF1TU” template=”vertical”]

Married couple George Adamson and Joy Adamson live in northern Kenya for George’s work as a senior game warden. After George’s team have to kill a man-eating lion and its lioness, their three young female cubs being orphaned. Although difficult to begin with, George and Joy wean and take care of the three cubs, who they adopt as pets. Born Free is a classic film about safari life in Africa, heartwarming, and with stunning human – big cat interaction.

[amazon box=”B07DL5XJXC” template=”vertical”]

To Walk With Lions

To Walk With Lions follows the later years of the life of George Adamson who was featured saving a lion cub in the safari movie Born Free . His life was transformed with this action, and he went on to become a lifelong animal activist. Well worth a watch in tandem with Born Free .

Something of an amusingly naff found footage film set in the South African bush. In a wild corner of the country, a young Zulu girl teams up with an American tourist group on safari. The group enters an uncharted area where they are forced to face the untamed wild.

[amazon box=”B00JFOV6FK” template=”vertical”]

Documentary Safari Movies:

The six-part mini-series, narrated by David Attenborough, takes an in-depth look at various African habitats and the wildlife that inhabit them. [amazon box=”B00AK7806E” template=”vertical”]

The Last Lions

This is a feature-length National Geographic documentary filmed in Botswana’s Okavango Delta region  and narrated by Jeremy Irons. It focusses on one lioness raising her cubs and protecting them against the many threats they face, including poaching. Whilst the film is about this one mother, it deals more broadly with the decline of the African lion from a population of many millions in the 20th century to just 20,000 today.

[amazon box=”B005Z2D88O” template=”vertical”]

The Ivory Game

This 2016 documentary examines the global ivory trade and the various actors sustaining and fighting it, examine the actions of governments, environmental preservationists, poachers, and ivory merchants. The film takes viewers from the elephant’s home ranges in Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia to China, Hong Kong, and Vietnam where ivory is seen as a status symbol, and demand is rife. As with so many other movies on this list, it’s one that’s well worth watching if you hope to see elephants on your next safari.

19 Inspirational Safari Movies To Watch Before You Go 3

My candidate for the single best safari film of all time is King Solomon’s Mines, the one with Debra Kerr and Stewart Granger (it made him an international star). It was the third of five filmings of H. Rider Haggard’s novel.

It had the most authentic tribesmen, and its iconic drum music was recycled in countless safari “B” movies as well as in John Ford’s Mogambo, another good African movie.

I’m going to have to check that one out David, thanks for the recommendation!

Richard Dacier owns a tour agency specialized on organizing safaris for European tourists eager to confront the African wild life. Actually, he took the job after his father and never went into the savanna by himself. As he owes big money to some mobster, he is compelled to convey a fake tourist, with a suspicious suitcase, toward Mozambic. To avoid suspicion from the authorities, he is supposed to tour a group of tourists as usual. The only problem - he is completely unexperienced as a guide!

Safari is a 2013 adventure drama movie that follows the journey of six friends who take a trip to a remote African wilderness for a once-in-a-lifetime safari adventure. The group consists of Ryan (Rocky Myers), a brash and wealthy young man eager to prove himself; his girlfriend, Rachel (Kim Argetsinger), a kind and thoughtful veterinary student; Rachel's best friend and fellow student, Elizabeth (Chloe Kirby); Elizabeth's boyfriend, Peter (Trey C. Mitchell), a mellow and laid-back musician; and two guides, Mose (P.J. King) and Rafiki (Rae Latt), who are assigned to take them on the tour.

The trip starts off on a high note as the group marvels at the stunning landscapes and exotic wildlife. They are accompanied by Mose and Rafiki, who share their knowledge about the African animals and their habits. However, as their journey takes them deeper into the jungle, things start to take a dangerous turn. One of the group members is bitten by a venomous snake, and they must race against time to reach a hospital to save his life.

The safari takes another unexpected turn when the group unwittingly enters the territory of a local poacher, who is determined to capture a rare and endangered animal for profit. The poacher and his accomplices start to follow the group, leading to a tense cat-and-mouse game in the wilderness.

As the adventure unfolds, the group must confront their deepest fears and personal demons. For Ryan, the trip is a chance to prove himself as a man and earn the respect of his girlfriend's father. Rachel, on the other hand, is struggling with the expectations of being a veterinarian and her role as a supportive girlfriend. Elizabeth is grappling with the consequences of her rocky relationship with Peter and her own identity crisis. And Peter is struggling to find his passion and purpose in life.

The movie is a great exploration of the characters' inner lives as they face challenges and obstacles in the wild. The breathtaking vistas of the African wilderness, combined with the talented cast's performances, transport the audience to a world that is both beautiful and perilous. Safari is a thrilling, heartfelt, and emotional journey that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Safari is a 2013 thriller with a runtime of 1 hour and 18 minutes. It has received mostly poor reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 4.3.

Great idea. Great setting. So its a real shame that the drama, horror and dialogue are ridiculous and cliché. Had the script been worked on rather than just relying on found footage tropes, I may have heard of this film before yesterday.

Ruslan Mavrodinov

Review by Ruslan Mavrodinov ★½

Dumb, absurd and poorly acted, Safari earns a bonus point for its somewhat original premise and the sense of desperation it evokes (even managing to squeeze a lazy pro-environmental message in its brief running time amidst all the gore, chaos and annoying characters), but ultimately works better as a safari-travelogue-gone-wrong than as a passable found-footage thriller.

Ben Grimm

Review by Ben Grimm ★★½

In this found footage movie from South Africa, American couples go on a safari and are recording the experience when they get separated and lost in the middle of nowhere. They find a local girl and try to navigate the African wilderness in order to get home.

I’m a found footage fan and was hoping that a non paranormal, non extraterrestrial found footage movie would seem more ... real. All the normal found footage tropes are here. Questions of why they are still recording when the shit goes down as well as how does someone have that much battery life. I guess it was more realistic. It was just that I hated all the characters and did not want to spend time with them. In the end I’d give it an average 2.5/5.

I love found footage movies. They are such a guilty pleasure for me. Though with this film, I have never wanted characters to die so much as I did in the first 15 minutes. Not that anyone who sees this would be stupid enough to try, but you don't pet animals you see in the bush. (I just feel the need to throw that in just in case). Typical shaky cam, but there were many moments in this where you wonder why the hell they are still filming. Long story short, I don't recommend this movie.

I found myself really enjoying this one. It was an interesting departure from paranormal and serial killer found footage films. Sure, the acting was stilted and the dialogue cliched, but it was an ultimately easy watch.

Not a textbook definition of a good film, but I liked the setting a lot and was well paced for what it is. Probably wouldn't watch it again if given the choice, but I wasn't bored with it which is a step up to some of the crapfest films i've subjected myself to.

Russell

Review by Russell ★★★

A 3 star rating has never weighed so heavy on me. Safari is not a good film and almost a textbook example of a production misunderstanding their in-world-camera narrative. For example Safari is bookended by non in-world-camera footage, which will instantly lose 80% of the voyeurs on any streaming service. The story is so heavily scripted that the pursuit of verisimilitude is non-existent. Then consider that our characters are threatened mainly by the presence of wild animals who aren't actually there. Which could have been a major disaster if it weren't for some effective editing.

I think what I'm trying to say is, there is value here. Also, when Safari fails cinematically it succeeds in comedically.

sexy young people go on a safari, disaster unfolds.

definitely feels like a wypipo genre film (sigh - it's my twitter addiction that made me know what that means). i think we're meant to cheer for them getting eaten because they're white and good looking & rich.

deserves a bit of credit for being a ff movie that tries something a bit different, but the execution...ugh, it's pretty lackluster, imo. animal attacks depicted by lots of shaking of cameras & things getting waved in from of the lens. it's pretty dull stuff.

MessAnderson

Review by MessAnderson ★

The two shitty boyfriends were the biggest animals imo. Almost can't blame the director for the hamfisted white savior narrative, it's in Afrikaners' DNA to do shit like that. When the one guide tries impressing the tourist group by saying the hotel was made in "the gentle African style," I laughed, like even when you're pandering to the cast of Dollar Tree OC that just doesn't sound like something any human being would say. Thought it was gonna go for a delightfully wicked ending but it pusses out at the last second. Gotta admit though, pretty interesting concept for a found footage horror, wish it was more Roar meets Blair Witch instead of another cast of unforgivably stupid people wandering around a petting zoo in Hell.

Catsby_Corbin

Review by Catsby_Corbin ★½

A group consisting of the stupidest people to have ever lived go on Safari in Africa and end up getting killed by both the local wildlife and their own ineptitude. Bonus points for featuring the classic "doomed proposal" horror movie trope.

Also, gotta love the part where the young attractive couple tell the traumatized African girl that she's so much cuter when she smiles lol

Beautiful location though!

SlashinFinalBoy 🎃👻🔪🩸

Review by SlashinFinalBoy 🎃👻🔪🩸 ★★

This was comedy gold. I laughed my butt off. Some of the characters were annoying, especially Nick. I also could have done without the opening and closing segments. The acting is subpar at times.

On a positive note the story is well paced and the wild animals are used effectively. The two leads are also likable and make up for the other lame characters. The setting is also unique to the found footage genre.

Now that I think about it, it's pretty much just The Blair Witch Project but taking place on a Safari in South Africa.

Oh and self-entitled Americans are why they end up in this situation.

I t’s almost the start of a new month, so it's time to take a look at all the new movies and TV shows set to arrive on Netflix in May 2024.

The biggest new edition is the return of the romantic period drama “Bridgerton." The hugely popular Netflix original series is back with the first part of its third season on May 16, and will no doubt lead to us all speaking with a posh English accent for days after bingeing. Other top TV show picks this month include true crime-inspired thriller “Bodkin” and new episodes of the glossy reality show “Selling the OC.”

If you’re in the mood for a movie, Netflix has plenty to offer. There’s a rom-com pairing Brooke Shields with Miranda Cosgrove as a mother-daughter duo, and “Unfrosted” which is a ridiculous-looking spoof from Jerry Seinfeld about the creation of the humble Pop-Tart — yes, this is a real movie debuting on the streaming service this month and not an out-of-season April Fools joke.

It’s set to be a busy month for new arrivals on Netflix and to make sure you don’t miss anything we’ve got a full guide below. There’s also a list of what’s leaving in May so you have a final chance to watch before they’re gone for good (or at least, gone for now).

New on Netflix in May 2024: Top picks

'a man in full'.

Based on the best-selling novel by Tom Wolfe, “A Man in Full” sees Jeff Daniels play a real estate mogul named Charlie Croker who faces sudden bankruptcy and must defend his crumbling empire from politicians and businessmen looking to capitalize now they smell blood in the water. Croker is a crude and rude tycoon who doesn’t plan to fall from grace without a fight and is ready to deploy every dirty trick to protect what he has built. The limited series will also star Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, Tom Pelphrey and William Jackson Harper. This six-episode drama comes from Dave E. Kelley who also created “Big Little Lies” for HBO and “The Lincoln Lawyer“ for Netflix.

'Selling the OC' season 3

“Selling the OC” is back for its third season with the agents of The Oppenheim Group’s Orange County office ready to compete for the top listing in the cut-throat world of luxury real estate all over again. Of course, these brokers won’t just be attempting to sell multi-million dollar houses in sun-soaked California, expect more office drama as these workers definitely don’t leave their personal lives at the door. This spin-off from “Selling Sunset” has become just as popular as its parent series, and the return of “Selling the OC” is sure to be the month’s highlight for many Netflix subscribers. If you want even more reality TV set in the world of real estate, be sure to check out “Buying London” which is also set to land on Netflix in May (date TBC).

'Unfrosted'

When I first heard about “Unfrosted,” I assumed it was a gag rather than a real movie, but nope, this comedy about the race to win the breakfast war between Kellogg’s and Post in the 1960s is totally legit. Directed, co-written by and starring Jerry Seinfeld, “Unfrosted” is a hilarious spoof of movies like “Blackberry” and “Air”. It chronicles the creation of the Pop-Tart, a "revolutionary" toaster pastry that is still enjoyed by families across the world to this day. Seinfeld has assembled a comedy super cast for this ridiculously silly flick with plenty of very funny people joining him including Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, Peter Dinklage, Bill Burr, Dan Levy, James Marsden and Max Greenfield.

'Bodkin'

Inspired by our society's current true crime obsession, but based on an original idea rather than a true story, “Bodkin” sees a group of podcasters travel to a seemingly idyllic town in the gorgeous Irish countryside to investigate a string of strange disappearances that occurred decades previously. Once the true crime investigators arrive on the scene they quickly realize there’s something more sinister hiding beneath the surface and are drawn into a twisting mystery. A dark thriller, with comedic elements (Though creator Jez Scharf is keen to stress it’s “not a comedy”), Bodkin stars Will Forte, Siobhán Cullen, and Robyn Cara.

Stream on Netflix from May 9

'Mother of the Bride'

From Mark Waters, the director of “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday”, comes a new romantic comedy starring Brooke Shields and Miranda Cosgrove alongside Benjamin Bratt and Chad Michael Murray. In this glossy flick, Lana (Shields) is stunned when her daughter Emma (Cosgrove) returns from a trip aboard with the news she’s getting married, in Thailand, in a month. If the shock engagement wasn’t enough to process, Lana is even more blind-sighted when she learns that Emma’s fiancé is the son of the man who broke her heart years earlier. Traveling to the destination wedding, what follows is several awkward encounters and maybe even a second chance at finding love. “Mother of the Bride” looks very cliché but also great fun.

‘Bridgerton’ season 3 (part 1)

For fans of Netflix’s hugely popular period drama, the wait is almost over, it’s time to break out your best fine China afternoon tea set as “Bridgerton” is (nearly) back after a hiatus of more than two years. “Bridgerton” season 3 will be released in two parts, with the first four episodes arriving in May, and the second half of the third season dropping in June. There will be plenty of juicy drama this season encompassing the entire cast but the big focus will be on Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgeton (Luke Newtown), and there’s more than friendship brewing between this wallflower and the dashing world traveler. If you’ve yet to sample the delights of “Bridgerton” now is a good time to get caught up before May 16.

Stream on Netflix from May 16

Move over “Rebel Moon” there’s a new blockbuster science-fiction epic in town and it’s called “Atlas”. This action movie stars Jennifer Lopez as Atlas Shepherd, a brilliant but unsociable data analyst with a deep distrust of artificial intelligence. She signs up to join a mission to the stars to capture a rebellious robot that is linked to her mysterious past. But when the mission takes a turn, Atlas is forced to trust AI to help her save all of humanity. Expect a fast-paced plot, and some timely themes, as well as a satisfying message about the importance of trusting others and letting your guard down. I'm not totally sold yet but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that “Atlas” is a little better received by critics than Zack Snyder’s aforementioned sci-fi flop.

Available : May 3 | Directed By : Jerry Seinfeld

Cast : Jerry Seinfeld, Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, James Marsden

A celebrated stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer, Jerry Seinfeld has been the face of one of the most iconic sitcoms on TV, and now, for the first time, he stars in his own live-action film. Unfrosted marks the feature directorial debut from Seinfeld, which he co-produces and co-writes with Spike Feresten , Barry Marder , and Andy Robin , the same team that gave us Bee Movie . A story about rival cereal brands , something you can expect only from a comedy star like Seinfeld, Unfrosted follows the competition between Kellogg’s and Post Cereal that resulted in Pop-Tarts. In 1963, Michigan, the two sworn rival brands race to create a breakfast pastry that would revolutionize breakfast foods, told in a hilarious “tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen.” Although it is said to be loosely based on the true story of the invention of the famous toaster pastries, most of the film is fictional, with some real elements. Unfrosted was born out of a joke that Seinfeld told on his Netflix special, 23 Hours to Kill, and as fans would know, brand jokes have been some of his favorite and popular sketches . The period comedy boasts a massive ensemble of comedians and actors, including Christian Slater , Hugh Grant, Bill Burr, Thomas Lennon , Jack McBrayer , Peter Dinklage , and Cedric the Entertainer .

Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story

Michigan 1963, business rivals Kellogg's and Post compete to create a cake that could change breakfast forever.

This latest youth fantasy film comes from the highly acclaimed animation studio Studio Colorido (and Twin Engine), which gave us anime films like Penguin Highway , A Whisker Away , and Drifting Home . Per Netflix’s official logline, My Oni Girl follows “Hiiragi Yatsuse, a first-year high school student who struggles to make friends despite his efforts to please others. His life takes an unexpected turn when one summer day, he meets Tsumugi, an oni (demon) girl on a quest to find her mother in the human world. Snow mysteriously begins to fall… and their adventure begins.” The film hails from Studio Ghibli alum Tomokata Shibayama , the animation artist involved in the award-winning and iconic production of Spirited Away so that you can expect an equally enchanting and visually stimulating film with My Oni Girl. The film is penned by Yuko Kakihara ( Chihayafuru ), with renowned animator Masafumi Yokota ( The Wind Rises ) leading the character design. It is a happy coincidence that our "What makes a good sex scene?" episode came out in the same week as Challengers, a film about a romance triangle in the tennis world starring Josh O'Connor, Zendaya and (not pictured) Mike Faist.

What makes a good sex scene? It can be easier spot bad sex, but Aisha Harris, Christina Tucker, Ronald Young, Jr. and I tried to focus on the good this week on Pop Culture Happy Hour. You can listen to our full conversation here. (We didn't originally plan for this episode to run the same week as our episode about Challengers , which is out in theaters now, but it's a happy coincidence, since that film has gotten a lot of attention — probably too much, relative to its other merits — for the sex scenes involving its three leads. It's really very good .)

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'Challengers'

Movie Reviews

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'challengers'.

It's often very obvious when a sex scene is bad, just like when a sex scene in a book is bad. It can get so uncomfortable to watch that you have to leave the room (and not in a way that feels true to the story). One of my personal tells for a bad sex scene is when all I can think about is how hard the actors are trying to persuade me that the characters are having a good time. For example, there has been much good discussion in recent years about Showgirls being a more interesting and competent project than it originally got credit for, but in that one pool scene (if you know it, you know it), all I can see is the effort.

Lauren Bacall And The 'Sex? What Sex?' Kind Of Movie Sex

Lauren Bacall And The 'Sex? What Sex?' Kind Of Movie Sex

It's not always as clear which scenes are good . That's partly because they serve so many different functions, all of which look different, and all of which can be effective. Furthermore, you don't want to confuse whether a sex scene is used well in a film with whether it's hot to you personally, despite the fact that there is overlap between those considerations.

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

Here's what I mean: When Aisha talks about the sequence near the beginning of Magic Mike's Last Dance , it's not irrelevant that the scene is, to her (and to me), hot. But it also makes sense in the context of the film and the franchise, partly because of the way it sets up the power dynamic between Mike (Channing Tatum) and Max (Salma Hayek Pinault). Mike is older now, he knows more, and the way he approaches a lap dance is actually different than in earlier movies.

And not all good sex scenes are hot in the same ways. The one I mentioned in the episode, from the romantic drama Love & Basketball , is sexy, yes. But it's also a scene between young adults (the talented basketball players Monica and Quincy, played by Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps), and as such, it incorporates a tentativeness that's not present in Magic Mike's Last Dance , to say the least. As Ronald pointed out during our discussion, that sex scene is quite different from one that takes place later in Monica and Quincy's relationship, when they're older and know each other better. That certainly feels true to real life, but it's not always reflected in Hollywood films, where I would tentatively estimate that 90% of on-screen sex is more idealized and thus less intimate than real-life sex, in part because it isn't allowed to change over the course of a relationship.

'Like it or not, we live in Oppenheimer's world,' says director Christopher Nolan

Movie Interviews

'like it or not, we live in oppenheimer's world,' says director christopher nolan.

Even further from the hotness of the lap dance scene is Ronald's pick: the imagination of Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt) running wild in Oppenheimer. While her husband (Cillian Murphy) is being interrogated, she pictures him having sex with his mistress, Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). It goes by quickly enough that it might seem like a Christopher Nolan flourish for flourish's sake, but it serves the purpose of letting you feel her pain over her husband's affair. Her relationship with Robert doesn't look especially romantic in the film, let alone sexually charged; she finds herself consumed by the idea that he was having hot sex with this other woman, and she locks eyes with her vision of a naked Tatlock and finds herself tormented. It's not really the intent of the scene to titillate the audience, just to give specificity to the shape of Kitty's preoccupation with the affair.

What makes a good sex scene?

What makes a good sex scene?

Christina raised another really important point, which is that sex scenes also collide with viewers at very specific moments. Her example from Bound , and the scenes between Violet (Jennifer Tilly) and Corky (Gina Gershon), touches on (among other things) her own history. It's an underappreciated aspect of the sex-in-movies discourse: representation matters in these scenes as much as anywhere else. I always wish I saw more sex scenes in movies that featured a broader variety of body types; it's still really rare to see ones that feature anybody who is even average sized. This is one of the reasons I'm curious about the upcoming season of Bridgerton , which places its focus on the gorgeous and curvaceous Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).

Looking for 'nomance': Study finds teens want less sex in their TV and movies

Good sex scenes are like any other kind of good filmmaking, honestly: it comes down to execution with purpose and care, done relative to whatever the function of the scene might be.

Whether that's spiciness or conflict or relationship growth or (as in the case of Bound ) setting up a steamy neo-noir story that wouldn't be the same if it weren't hot as heck, form follows function, ideally.

The 7 best things to stream this weekend, from a new Netflix show about teen ghosts to a Bon Jovi docuseries

  • Check out new shows like "Dead Boy Detectives" this weekend.
  • The finale of FX's "Shōgun" and a Bon Jovi docuseries are streaming now too.
  • There's also a new season of "MILF Manor" for reality fans.

Insider Today

Remember that controversial reality show last year where eight older women were looking for love among a pool of eight much younger men who just so happened to be the sons of those women? Well, it's back for a second season and somehow even messier than before.

On the opposite end of the reality spectrum is "We're Here," a heartwarming HBO reality show about the transformative power of drag.

There are also several new documentaries out this weekend, including one about Bon Jovi and another about a Chilean doomsday cult.

Here's a complete rundown of all the best movies, shows, and documentaries to stream this weekend, broken down by what kind of entertainment you're looking for.

FX's epic historical drama 'Shōgun' aired its finale this week

FX hasn't addressed whether "Shōgun" will get a second season , though it's unlikely given that the source material — James Clavell's 1975 novel of the same name — was used in its entirety for the first season.

But whether it continues or not, the series, set in Edo-era Japan, is an absolute triumph and well worth a watch. With 99% on Rotten Tomatoes , it's shaping up to be one of the best-reviewed new shows of 2024 .

The new season of 'MILF Manor' is a must for fans of ultra-messy reality TV

Like I said above, it's moms dating sons (no, not their own sons).

TLC also teased an added twist in the new season that promises to make this outing even more deranged than the last.

Streaming on: Hulu Live TV

Or, for a more wholesome and heartwarming reality TV watch, check out 'We're Here'

In "We're Here," an uplifting, "Queer Eye"-type of reality show, famous drag queens travel to small-town America where they adopt a "drag daughter" for a makeover.

But it's not just about glam hair, makeup, and outfits — the queens are helping their daughters to be their most authentic selves, confronting bigotry, and helping foster connection in historically closed-minded communities.

True crime fans should tune into 'The Doomsday Cult of Antares de la Luz'

In this new Netflix documentary, former members of a Chilean cult speak out about their experiences — which apparently included human sacrifice.

Or for a fictionalized take on a real murder case, try 'The Asunta Case'

"The Asunta Case" is a drama based on a shocking, real-life murder case in Spain.

In 2013, Rosario Porto and Alfonso Basterra reported their adopted daughter, Asunta, missing. Her body was found by the side of the road hours later, and authorities eventually zeroed in on the parents as the perpetrators of the crime.

If you want a new supernatural YA show to binge, check out 'Dead Boy Detectives'

Neil Gaiman might not care that much about creating a larger "Sandman" universe at Netflix, but we sure do. The latest series based on one of Gaiman's comics, "Dead Boy Detectives," follows two ghosts named Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland, who opt to stay on Earth to investigate crimes with a supernatural bent.

Music fans should check out 'Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story'

The four-part docuseries is a definitive telling of Bon Jovi's 40-year journey . It features intimate access to the band members, decades of personal videos, and never-before-seen photos. The doc kicks off in February 2022, following lead singer Jon Bon Jovi's vocal injury that derailed the band's future.

Disclosure: Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Business Insider's parent company, Axel Springer, is a Netflix board member.

Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney star in the 2023 romantic comedy 'Anyone But You.'

For movie lovers, the beauty of Netflix Netflix is that you can expect a healthy array of intriguing Originals and engrossing outside content in any given month—and that was certainly the case in April. The fourth month of the year might have been the best so far for Netflix subscribers in 2024, as the streaming platform gave us all kinds of wonderful cinematic options, from epic sci-fi operas to box-office-shattering rom-coms to sadly forgotten spy thrillers. There were dozens of great new movies to choose from this past month on Netflix, but ten stood out above the rest.

Which ten were those? Let’s take a look. Below in the first section, you’ll find my picks for the ten best movies to hit Netflix in April 2024. Then at the bottom of this article, I’ve posted a comprehensive list of every single new film that became available this past month. Whether it’s within the ten I recommend or on that larger list, I guarantee a great new movie is just waiting for you on Netflix. Hopefully we can find it today.

The 10 Best New Movies On Netflix In April 2024

Anyone but you (2023).

For the first time in recent memory, a rom-com took the box office by storm in 2023. In Anyone But You , Bea and Ben (played by Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, respectively) seem destined for romantic bliss after their first date. However, a bizarre twist sends their burgeoning passion into a tailspin, only to find themselves posing as a couple at an Australian wedding. Directed by Will Gluck, who mastered the easy breezy rom-com formula with hits like Easy A and Friends with Benefits , this film cleverly weaves Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing into a modern tale of feigned love and genuine laughter. Despite mixed reviews, its December 2023 release captivated audiences worldwide, amassing $216 million and proving that charm can triumph over cliché. If you’re a fan of the classic romantic comedy formula, then you have to put Anyone But You on your watchlist, because this sort of competence in the genre doesn’t come very often.

WhatsApp Brand New iPhone Feature Just Launched That s Much Easier To Use

Earth s new second moon is as big as the statue of liberty and scientists just found its origin, new apple id password reset issue hitting iphone ipad and macbook users, rebel moon: part two: the scargiver (2024).

Whenever Zack Snyder releases a movie, whether it’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , Army of the Dead or Watchmen , it’s followed by controversy—mostly because people think his movies are so bad . But you can count me as one of his fans, and, personally, Rebel Moon: Part Two: The Scargiver represents a high point for anyone who appreciates his captivating aesthetic. The Rebel Moon sequel escalates the battle for Veldt’s freedom as Kora (played by the most underrated actress in the industry, Sofia Boutella) leads her group against the maniacal Admiral Atticus Noble (played with cartoonish delight by Ed Skrein). Set against a sprawling cosmic backdrop, this chapter deepens the rebels' fight to protect their newfound home from the clutches of the tyrannical Imperium. Released just months after the first movie (with a director’s cut coming later this year), Part Two enhances the story with compelling explorations of the characters’ pasts, setting the stage for a monumental clash that seeks to forge a future free from oppression.

Suzume (2023)

In Suzume , a young girl's ordinary life is swept into an extraordinary adventure when she encounters a mysterious young man who is on a quest to close portals that dangerously link the Earth to the sky. Directed by Makoto Shinkai, who brought us recent anime classics like Your Name. and Weathering with You , this visually stunning animated film weaves elements of fantasy, romance and drama into a gripping, heartrending narrative about loss, about resilience, about the ultimate journey towards closure we all must trek. As Suzume, voiced by Nanoka Hara, travels across Japan with her multi-dimension-traveling companion, the scenery transforms into a breathtaking backdrop for their unfolding story, filled with lovable characters and whimsical charm, all the while captivating us with its beauty and gentle exploration of the connections that define us.

For a great explanation of Suzume ’s deeper meaning, check out this thorough breakdown .

Anna (2019)

Every once in a while, a movie that was released to little fanfare can find a second life on Netflix—and that ’s exactly what happened with Anna. In this highly stylized frilm from Luc Besson, who has entertained us for decades with compelling stories like Léon: The Professional , The Fifth Element and Lucy , a strikingly beautiful fashion model harbors a secret life as a deadly government assassin. This 2019 film that didn’t make much of an impact upon release (largely due to poor marketing) takes viewers on a gripping journey through the dual lives of its protagonist, Anna—played with alluring grace by Russian model Sasha Luss. As she navigates the dark corridors of international espionage, the layers of her complex identity unfold in a series of high-stakes missions. Supporting performances by Helen Mirren, Luke Evans and Cillian Murphy add depth to this stylish, action-packed thriller that keeps audiences guessing until the last reveal.

City Hunter (2024)

It’s always an ambitious (and dangerous) plight to adapt a classic manga series for the big screen—especially if it’s a live-action adaptation. From Ghost in the Shell to One Piece to Cowboy Bebop , these sorts of ventures are usually released to mixed results. The latest highly anticipated Japanese live-action adaptation from Netflix is pulling its story from City Hunter , in which Ryo Saeba (played by Ryohei Suzuki in the film) navigates the perilous underbelly of modern-day Shinjuku. As a top-tier "sweeper," he, alongside Hideyuki Makimura (Masanobu Ando) and Fumino Kimura (Saeko Nogami), tackle high-stakes criminal puzzles with a blend of charisma and danger. The film promises a thrilling blend of action and humor, appealing to longtime fans and newcomers alike, and expands on the legacy of the beloved manga series, which has captivated audiences for decades.

Freud’s Last Session (2023)

Every once in a while we receive a captivating performance from a cherished actor and Oscar winner...and we never even hear about it. That seems to be the case with Freud’s Last Session , which stars recent Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins as Sigmund Freud, who, alongside Matthew Goode’s C.S. Lewis, delves into profound debates on faith, humanity and personal history amidst the looming shadow of World War II. Directed by Matthew Brown, who brought us other biographical dramas like The Man Who Knew Infinity and London Town , this intellectually stimulating drama captures a historic collision of minds in 1939 England, offering insights into the complexities of belief and the human condition through a series of intense, dialogue-heavy exchanges. The film weaves global events into personal struggles, creating a compelling backdrop for this clash of titans.

King Richard (2021)

It’s crazy to think that the famous slap heard around the world from Will Smith happened...three years ago. That moment has overshadowed by the fact that, on that same evening, Smith won a much-deserved Oscar for his role in King Richard. This biographical drama tells the inspiring story of Richard Williams, an unwavering father who shaped two of the greatest tennis players ever” Venus and Serena Williams. Will Smith delivers a compelling performance as Richard, whose visionary methods and fierce determination defy the odds stacked against his daughters in a sport historically dominated by athletes from vastly different backgrounds. Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, who directed films like Bob Marley: One Love and Joe Bell , this gripping story highlights the power of family, perseverance and believing in the impossible, making it a heartfelt tribute to the man behind the champions.

Strange Way of Life (2023)

Pedro Almodóvar is the kind of director who releases films to what can seem like relatively little fanfare—especially given how fantastic they usually are. The director of great gems like Volver , All About My Mother and The Skin I Love In now brings us Strange Way of Life , which casts Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal as two former hired guns whose paths cross again in the remote town of Bitter Creek. What starts as a nostalgic reunion soon unveils deeper (and by deeper, I mean romantic ) motives, as the duo confronts unresolved issues amidst the desolate desert backdrop. This Almodóvar film adds a poignant chapter to the director’s diverse filmography, exploring themes of friendship, betrayal and the inexorable passage of time through its arresting story and powerful performances.

Scoop (2024)

Great journalism movies feel few and far between these days. Classics like Network and All the President ’s Men were much more common in the 1970s than these days, when winning projects like Spotlight or The Post hit like a breath of fresh air. Netlfix has given us another great story for the genre, however, with Scoop , which dives into the tense preparations behind Prince Andrew's explosive 2019 Newsnight interview. Directed by Philip Martin and featuring Gillian Anderson as journalist Emily Maitlis, the film reveals how interview booker Sam McAlister, portrayed by Billie Piper, navigated palace politics to secure a near-impossible interview. Rufus Sewell plays the embattled prince, whose televised missteps lead to a public retreat. Adapted by Peter Moffat and Geoff Bussetil from true events, the film celebrates the relentless women behind the scenes who shaped one of the decade's biggest news stories, illustrating the power struggle between the media and monarchy.

The Little Things (2021)

It’s not often that you get three Oscar winners playing the three lead parts in a murder-mystery thriller—but that’s exactly what happened when The Little Things hit screens back in 2021. Directed by John Lee Hancock, who gave us intimate character studies like The Blind Side , Saving Mr. Banks and The Founder , this deeply suspenseful detective story plunges viewers into a murky world of crime and redemption. Denzel Washington stars as Deputy Sheriff Joe "Deke" Deacon, whose hunt for a serial killer, played with by maniacal intensity by Jared Leto, leads him into a dark labyrinth of past sins and shaky alliances. Joined by Rami Malek's Detective Jim Baxter, the duo's quest not only challenges their moral compasses but also blurs the lines between right and wrong. This neo-noir crime flick slowly builds tension, culminating in a haunting exploration of obsession and the heavy burdens carried by those who seek justice.

‘Infested’ Review: Bugging Out

An apartment building in Paris is overrun by murderous arachnids and unsubtle allegory in this fleet and efficient debut feature.

  • Share full article

A man in a hoodie crouches outside with a muddied hand out and a spider crawling on top of it.

By Jeannette Catsoulis

There are no fresh ideas in the French creepy-crawler “Infested,” yet this first feature from Sébastien Vanicek scurries forward with such pep and purpose that its shortcomings are easily forgivable. Add a handful of eager young actors, a sociopolitical slam and a claustrophobic location swarming with venomous spiders and you’ll be hunting for the DEET long before the credits roll.

Set in a low-income housing block in a Paris suburb, the action — and there’s plenty of it — is led by Kaleb (Théo Christine), an industrious youth who sells black-market sneakers and fusses over his illegal collection of small critters. His latest acquisition is a spider that, unbeknown to Kaleb, was smuggled from a Middle Eastern desert after rendering one of its captors agonizingly kaput. In less time than it takes to say “arachnophobia,” it will escape, reproduce like a bandit and send its deadly progeny scampering into every unsealed nook and cranny. Woe betide anyone not wearing a hoodie.

On one level, “Infested” is a well-worn, thoroughly efficient creature feature with sleek effects and pell-mell pacing. While not especially scary, the movie gains traction from a script (by Vanicek and Florent Bernard) that finds ways to add a smidgen of back story to its panicked characters. So as the building becomes a giant, web-draped cocoon, the rapid-fire squabbling among Kaleb, his sister (Lisa Nyarko) and his onetime best friend (Finnegan Oldfield) feels entirely authentic. As do the labyrinthine corridors, the constantly failing lighting (props to Alexandre Jamin’s stuttering photography) and Kaleb’s kindhearted concern for his neighbors.

A police lockdown cues social commentary that, while glaringly obvious, is also apt in a movie whose French title translates as “vermin” and whose gun-and-gas-toting authorities may have their own ideas about the term’s definition.

Infested Not Rated. Running time: 1 hour 46 minutes. Watch on Shudder .
